Everyone’s life is full of memorable moments. Some moments are quite unforgettable. There have been many unforgettable moments in my life. I would like to mention one of them.

The most unforgettable moment in my life is when one day I was travelling from Jammu to Dehli by train. I was in the first class, so only a few passengers were there with me. At a specific station, all of them got off. I was now in the compartment absolutely alone.

After a moment, a clever lady walked into the compartment and sat next to me. She had an ingenious scheme to rob me. She told me she would report to the railway police that I had robbed her if I did not hand over all the money I had to her. I was totally and utterly perplexed when I heard this horrible voice. I made a plan to save myself from that lady’s wicked plan. Therefore, I pretended to be a deaf and a dumb fellow and asked her to write what she wanted to say on a piece of paper. She wrote her request happily on the piece of paper and handed it over to me. I changed my seat to pick up a piece of writing. The railway policeman came and asked what the matter was. As smart as she was, the women burst into admissions, so she said I had robbed her of a thousand rupees. He seemed to believe in her false story at first, but when I gave the piece of writing to the police, she turned pale. She was caught red-handed, so I saved myself from her evil scheme.

Unforgettable Event It was a sunny evening, I felt so sleepy at that moment but there is curriculum class. I decided to take a short nap before attending the class. But unfortunately, I did not awake by the alarm that I had set. When I was wake up, it is already 2. 20 pm. There was only left 10 minutes for me to prepare all the things and rush to volley ball's field. I Just quickly wash my face and simply pick a shirt in my cupboard. Luckily, I still manage to be at volley ball's court on time.

Before starting the practice, the lecture gave us some brief about the technique of playing volley ball. He taught us how to pass, set and serve the ball. After the briefing, we start o

ur practice while our lecture was standing beside with a whistle observe us. Most of us blame about the hot weather but as the practice going on, slowly we started to enjoy the game. We decided to have a competition among our self and the lecture will be the referee to Judge our match. We had choosing 5 people for each team and I was chosen as one of them.

I was so excited as it is my first time having valley ball competition. After waiting for half an hour, it is my turn to play. I and my team members were ready steadily in the court waiting to beat down the opponent. But the luck seems like did not stand on our side, in 20 minutes time, our team had lose 5 marks that is 19-14. I felt a bit nervou

as the game will end soon. After 5 more minutes, we managed to catch up the opponent with the same score, 24-24. Finally, it was match point for the game.

At that moment, all of the supporters were watching the game Tuttle and I did feel the nervous and critical situation. Fortunately, I was given a chance by my team member to give a spike to the opponent. I Jumped as high as possible and gave a critical hit for the last mark! Suddenly, a 'Bismarck sound was breaking up the silent situation. Yeah, I was successful to contribute for the match point but I did not hear any clap for me, what I heard is only laughing from my friends. I Just realized that my pant was broken!

I can felt that my face was reddening and I closed the broken part with my hands. This action makes my friends felt funnier and I could hear more and more laugher. Some of my friends even tried to take off my hand and started Joking on me. I was so embarrassed as there were also some girls at the volley ball's court. As my hand was closing the broken part of the pant, I could not walk normally, I walked like a duck toward the lecture to ask for the permission for going back the hostel to change a new pant. I found that the lecture was also laughed at me and asked me to change a new pant.

Without wasting any time, I ran like a furious duck toward the hostel. After changing a new pant, I was so shy to go down the

volley ball's court for listening on their laughing. I decided for not to going down and sleep on the bed. Even though this embarrassed event had pass for a few months, but I still heard some of my classmate talk about it. Essay About an Unforgettable Event

Chichén Itzá is a large Mayan city famous for a large, pyramid temple built by the Maya civilization. It is located on the Yucatan Peninsula to the east of Merida. The most recognizable structure in Chichén Itzá is the Temple of Kukulkan, also known as El Castillo. The temple has 365 steps, one for each day of the year. Each of the temple’s four sides has 91 steps, and the top platform makes the 365th. Twice a year on the spring and autumn equinoxes, a shadow falls on the pyramid in the shape of a serpent. As the sun sets, this snake descends the steps to eventually join a stone serpent head at the base of the great staircase up the pyramid’s side.

The Mayan’s astronomical skills were so advanced they could even predict solar eclipses, and an impressive and sophisticated observatory structure remains on the site today. Chichén Itzá is named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Visiting Chichén Itzá is a trip to the past. To be there we reflect on how the Maya lived so wisely and mystically in all their surroundings, that the sciences, religion and daily life mixed perfectly.

Observing the Temple of Kukulkan is breathtaking, but what gets more impressive is listening to the story behind it that the tour guides tell. I liked how they explained everything so precisely that you can picture it perfectly. At the end of the explanation, the tour guides also provide us with many interesting conspiracy theories about the fall of the Mayan culture. Since 2007 it is not allowed to climb the steps of the pyramids due to the deterioration it has had. An impressive effect is the echo that is reflected in the upper part of the castle, when several tourists simultaneously applaud in the lower part at the same time, it is indescribable the sensation that you feel when you hear the characteristic sound of a bird in the area and the echo it creates.

The weather in Chichen Itzá depends on the season. I visited Chichen Itzá as part of my trip to Cancun in July of 2018. The weather was hot but there’re plenty of trees and shade around the site, it is also recommendable to wear sun screen and carry an umbrella or a hat. We were also told to carry a raincoat because rain can come at random, which it did in the afternoon. After visiting Chichen Itzá, the tour includes a visit to a nearby village called Valladolid. In Valladolid we got to enjoy delicious Mexican dishes like cochinita pibil and lime soup. We also got to visit a cenote until out of nowhere it started raining.

Visiting Chichen Itzá is a great experience because we get to lean about a different culture and see the incredible pyramids and temples the Mayans built. Although it is a great learning experience, I wouldn’t recommend little children attending due to the hot weather and long walks. A good recommendation is to arrive early to get a good view, because at it gets late it starts to get really crowded with a lot of tourists and the weather is not very hot. Teenagers and adults would most likely benefit from this experience. It is advisable to visit Chichén Itzá with a tour guide because of the great amount of information and history the place has and to make the visit more enjoyable. Along the site, you can encounter a great number of souvenirs sellers which are great if you want to take a reminder of that experience to your friends and family and for yourself.

When arriving at the complex the most impressive thing is the great Pyramid of Kukulkan, a wonder of the world. The faces on the pyramid are perfectly oriented to each cardinal point. The Mayans were undoubtedly a very intelligent civilization; the things they knew at that time were surprising. How they used astronomy and mathematics so efficiently, is amazing to observe. My visit to Chichen Itzá was fascinating. The tour guide’s timing was perfect so that we could get to enjoy the different places we visited. It was an unforgettable day and it was wonderful to learn about the history of this wonderful civilization.

How Schools Can Turn the Solar Eclipse Into an Unforgettable Science Lesson

If the weather cooperates, science students of all ages could be in for quite a show on April 8. The first sign will be a sudden temperature drop. The sky will darken, and winds will shift. A dark shadow will appear on the horizon. Faint waves of light may waft across the ground. A ring of bright light will shine from the outer edges of the otherwise darkened sun. Then the moon will cover the sun completely and, for a few seconds, a thin red layer may appear around its outer rim.

This fantastical display describes a total solar eclipse, which happens in the same place on the planet only an average of once every 366 years, according to experts . It’s also the sort of once-in-a-lifetime occurrence that can get kids super excited about science—a worthwhile goal, especially amid a barrage of reports of disengaged students and sky-high rates of absenteeism .

The impending total solar eclipse raises several questions for educators—from how best to expose students to both its sheer magnificence and its value as a learning tool to, more broadly, how to infuse other ‘real world’ science lessons into the classroom. To get answers to these questions, Education Week reached out to science education guru Dennis Schatz, a senior fellow at the Institute of Learning Innovation, past president of the board of directors for the National Science Teaching Association, and advisor to the Smithsonian Science Education Center.

Schatz advocated for a carnival-like atmosphere to celebrate the coming eclipse; even, as he noted, several school districts will cancel school that day. He also shared his general thoughts on how teachers can generate interest in ‘real-world’ science learning and the obstacles that too often prevent it. Here’s an edited version of the conversation.

What is your overarching philosophy of science education?

A fundamental philosophy of mine is to make science life-long, life-wide, and life-deep.

What do you mean by ‘life-deep’?”

There’s the workforce development focus of this; that is, the demand for STEM professionals. But life-deep also means getting involved and interested in science at a level that’s appropriate for you. You may be an accountant, but you may like to watch the National Geographic Channel or read science books and, if so, that’s an appropriate depth for you.

Where does engagement in science start?

Having been involved in schoolwide reform efforts, I’ve done a lot of work with teachers in the classroom, although I’ve never actually taught in one. Making science more engaging for students is probably the biggest challenge at the elementary school level, because not many elementary school teachers are trained in science. So the real goal, especially at the elementary level, is how to build enthusiasm in teachers so they can then get students excited.

So, what works?

It can start by getting teachers to think about how to use their local environment, or local community, to generate interest in science. For example, in the Northwest, salmon is a big issue [ declining numbers in recent years have been blamed on climate change and human development], so that can be a way to generate interest—either from an environmental perspective or a food perspective. There are a lot of different real-world connections to be made with salmon for people who live in the Northwest.

What about getting students excited to experience the solar eclipse?

Absolutely, the solar eclipse can be awe-inspiring, and it can be fun. I was talking to a teacher recently who said: I don’t want to make it like a fire drill, where you take the students outside, with their glasses, take a look at the eclipse, and go back in. There’s a whole range in how districts are treating the [upcoming] eclipse. It takes two and a half hours, from beginning to end. Watching the eclipse slowly go across the sun is like watching ice melt. So you want to think about ways in which you can make it into a fun experience. Enlightened administrators will encourage building an entire event around it: Think art activities, food, music.

How far in advance would you suggest teachers begin preparing students for the solar eclipse?

It’s about two weeks out, and in the back of my mind, I’m saying: It’s way too late. I guess you could try to cram it all into just one day, but I would recommend spending more time in advance. Ideally, well before the eclipse, teachers will bring some science activities into class that model what’s happening with the phenomenon. There are many other real-life examples to draw from: Every six months, there’s at least one lunar and one solar eclipse somewhere on the Earth.

Will most schools use the eclipse as a learning opportunity?

A huge number of districts are canceling school for a variety of reasons; one is liability. In the Midwest and Northeast, the eclipse happens at the end of the school day, and people are worried about safety issues and higher-than-normal traffic during the point of totality [when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun]. In these cases of school closures, teachers who plan in advance can share information with students about how to experience the eclipse safely , and they can in turn go home and teach their parents.

How do you recommend students experience the eclipse?

I think glasses are overrated. When you look through a pair of glasses, you get this little yellow dot. There are so many indirect ways to view the eclipse. One of my favorites is with a basic kitchen colander . If you stand with your back to the sun and hold the colander so the sun’s light shines through it onto the ground or a wall, inside the colander’s shadow you’ll see many tiny images of the eclipsed sun.

Other tips for good viewing of the eclipse?

You want to find a place in the sun that’s not obscured by shadows, somewhere away from tall buildings. At most schools, this might be a playground area. I recommend going out a couple days ahead of time and finding out where the shadows are going to be, so you can avoid them. And of course, the most important element is clear weather.

When the eclipse is over, how can science teachers maintain students’ excitement about the natural world?

There are so many phenomena to observe and study—certainly in astronomy, from meteor showers to lunar eclipses—and all kinds of weather events, like hurricanes and earthquakes. You have to be sensitized, as a teacher, to think: I’m going to use these events to motivate an interest in science.

What resources do you suggest for teachers who want to stay informed about real-world science lessons?

The NSTA publishes three journals for educators, targeting elementary, middle, and high school students. I also like the New York Times’ science section. There’s also Scientific American magazine, which has moved from being a journal for scientists and now is much more geared for the lay audience.

So, if resources are available, what gets in the way of teaching real-world science lessons?

For teachers, it’s often a matter of figuring out: How do I feel like I have the freedom to move away from what I’m supposed to teach? Things are so standards-driven these days, there’s just no time or ability to deviate. Plus, you’re worrying about how kids are going to do on tests, and so many other things—social-emotional learning, safety. But if you aren’t generating an ongoing interest in the scientific phenomena that you can see and experience, then you’re doing a disservice to students.

After all, that was the most eventful day of my life, which changed the person I was.Everything started on 18th of November when my aunt sent a car to my mother, a beautiful blue Audi, the latest in 2004. It was raining heavily when we received the car. My brother and I were so excited because we planned to coax mom to give the new car to my brother, as she has already had a car and she refused to give hers to my brother. The next day we spoke to my father and he agreed to talk to mom and allowed my brother to have that shining blue car. My brother, my younger sister and I managed to be the most obedient children in the world, we did everything that my mom said, we called her twice or thrice per day to know how she is, we kept pampering her for two and half weeks and finally, in the beginning of September she decided to give him the car but with a condition that he must be home before 12pm. Our life was getting more and more interesting. Each second was fabulous, he taught me how to drive a car, obviously I was a great L (I call it Loser). Everyday he dropped us at school and fetched us after his class, we were somehow boasting to our relatives whenever they saw us with the car, I bragged about him in my class, some of my girlfriends fell in love with him and wanted me to introduce my brother to them. I thought to myself "How money can bring people to you?" I was disgusted to see more girls around me, bugging me for a lift. I didn't need someone to nudge me, to realize that this car has brought friends close but enemies closer. On October 10th, my family and I visited my grandmother for two weeks. She was very happy to see us. She pampered us whenever we visited her. She is very special to us and we love her so much. Her house in the village is one of the biggest; it has a green and flourishing garden, where we spent our spare time with our neighbor's children. One great thing in my grandmother's house is: we all spoke our dialect and for us it's an opportunity to master it. When she heard that my brother has a car, she complained to my mother and asked her to hire him a driver instead. The days ended soon, and we are back to our same routine back in city. Once back to the city, we immediately went back to bed because of the exhausting trip. After few weeks my family and I were planning to celebrate Christmas. We finally ended up celebrating it in our house with the family. I went with my mom to buy some provisions; my dad and my brother went to buy the Christmas tree. That night we decorated the tree as well as the house. On the Christmas day, we had many people, we could barely step through the crowd, and my mother was busy with her siblings. My brother, sister and I were glad to meet our cousins but we were more than glad to have them gone, because we couldn't wait to discover what Santa Clause had brought for us, since mother refused to let us open the gifts early that morning. After seven days, we celebrated the New Year by wishing everyone a blissful year ahead. The following day my brother and I became very close until being his best friend. He introduced me to his girlfriend and I was glad that he did. The next day, 25th of January, a close friend of mom came to visit her, and she dined at home. When she was about to leave, my mom asked my brother to drop her at the nearby taxi stand. He accepted and asked me to accompany him. I entered my room but something pushed me to stay, I was indecisive; as I wore my shoes and took them off, he scolded me because I was taking such a long time, the same day our country was playing a football match versus another African country, the roads were deserted, everybody was watching it, finally I told him, that I am not going. Since my brother left that day around 4pm, he never came back. The night was cold and calm; everyone was at home except him. Suddenly my dad's phone rang, he rushed to my mom's door and whispered. They rushed out, unfortunately all the car were not working, I asked my father 'What is happening?' he told me 'Your brother had an accident.' I felt a chill and everything went black around me. I was fighting back tears and I replied to him 'Hope he didn't get hurt' he said 'He is fine and we are going to find out what had happened'. Without wasting a minute, I prayed to God for him: to protect him and make sure that he was fine. Unmoving, I waited my parents return, they got back around 10pm looking anxious, you could read the end of the world on their face, then my father came to me and held me tightly, he told me to be strong, 'Your brother has left us'. My feeling at that moment was beyond description, I heard screams coming from outside the gate, I thought to myself that it cannot be true, we spoke only a few hours ago and now he is gone, mourners were crying everywhere around the house, our neighbors came, my mom, my poor mom could barely stand, I looked at her and started crying, 'Oh God! Why did he leave us so young?' it kept on running in my mind. He was the only son, my only brother, my life was over. That night was the worst night ever. I was sitting on the table, watching people crying, crawling and rolling on the floor, I couldn't feel anything, I was like a frame on the wall. My five senses just stopped working, and everything was black. I was present but my thoughts were not. I was breathing but my heart was not controlling the process, only God knows how I felt that night. The next day, I went to my younger sister as my elder sister was on her way coming back from Belgium. I cuddled her so tightly and I told her that everything would be fine. Our house was crowded but for me it was empty because I couldn't hear the gentle voice of my brother. My brother was the tallest in the family, he was good looking, kind and admired by everyone. When my elder sister came, the atmosphere got worse than before. She didn't see him since he was 10 years old. We were waiting for my sister and aunt to come from Europe to fix the burial day. His friends, classmates and even people who were unknown by the family came to pay respect. His girlfriend and parents also came over to extend their sympathies but she couldn't come to the burial ceremony because she was not strong enough to attend it. Many people read out the message that they have written to my brother on that day, one of his friends said 'The days when I was desperate, you held me up, I had no money you bought me food, I had nowhere to go you took me to your house. Thank you, you will always remain as my brother. I love you.' We prayed for him in the church, the father gave him his last blessing, and buried him, I felt like half of me was gone, people couldn't believe what had happened .They were shocked and the same goes to my family and I. My grandmother was holding my mom on the way back home, everyone could express their feelings but for mom and dad this sad tragedy was a nightmare, they would have like it to be a true nightmare, so that they could wake up and live the normal and complete life we once had. What is the point of this new car? It came to facilitate our life or to take a part of us? What if I had stopped him from going? Would God have let him alive? The following events are planned for the week ahead throughout the region:

• The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks presents the Southeastern Pennsylvania Orchid Society’s Orchid Show & Sale from Friday through Sunday. Hours are noon to 6 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The event will feature thousands of orchids on display, plus international vendors, free guided tours and lectures, fragrance judging and a flower arranging competition. Tickets cost $15 at the door, good for all three days. Admission is free for children 11 and younger. This action-packed, music-filled production is based on the top-rated animated preschool series “PAW Patrol,” airing on Nickelodeon. Guests will see Ryder and his team of pups embark on a pirate-themed adventure to uncover hidden treasure. Mayor Goodway is getting everything shipshape for a big Pirate Day celebration in Adventure Bay. When Cap’n Turbot falls into a dark and mysterious cavern, it’s PAW Patrol to the rescue. • The Keswick Theatre, Glenside, kicks off the weekend with An Evening With David Sedaris on Thursday at 8 p.m. One of America’s pre-eminent humor writers, Sedaris is the master of satire. His latest book, “Happy-Go-Lucky,” is a collection of 18 semi-autobiographical essays. On Friday at 8 p.m., singer-songwriter Colin Hay brings his solo tour to the Keswick. On Saturday at 3 and 8 p.m., the Keswick presents Let’s Sing Taylor, the ultimate Taylor Swift tribute band. On Sunday at 8 p.m., comedians Darcy & Jer bring their “No Refunds Tour” to the Keswick. • The Broadway series at the Santander Performing Arts Center, Reading, presents the hit musical “Come From Away” on Wednesday, April 10, at 7:30 p.m. This New York Times Critics’ Pick takes you into the heart of the true story of 7,000 passengers and the small town that welcomed them after their flights were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, in the week following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships. Tickets start at $49.50 at santander-arena.com .

• St. John’s Lutheran Church, 355 St. John’s Circle, Phoenixville, will present Principally Harps! on Sunday at 4 p.m. Mindy Cutcher, principal harpist with the Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra of Philadelphia, and Janet Witman, principal harpist with the Kennett Symphony of Chester County, will be performing a varied program of concert harp-duo transcriptions including Polovtsian Dances by Borodin, Debussy’s En Bateau, Disney classic “Under the Sea,” a jazz version of “Pure Imagination,” the beloved hymn Fairest Lord Jesus, and Latin dance music. The artists perform on concert grand harps. Both musicians have over 30 years of professional harp experiences in the Mid Atlantic region, studied under legendary harp teacher Alice Chalifoux, and are graduates of the world’s most prestigious conservatories, Oberlin and The Curtis Institute of Music. There is no charge, although a free-will offering will be received.

• The Celtic folk band House of Hamill kicks off its spring tour at the Sellersville Theater on Thursday at 8 p.m. Also featured on the bill is the Vermont-based Louise Bichan Band. House of Hamill’s music is described as “on the edge of tradition and innovation.” The band includes Rose Baldino (fiddle and vocals), Brian Buchanan (fiddle, vocals and guitar), and Caroline Browning (bass, mandolin and piano). The trio tours nationally, performing at Celtic festivals and established folk venues. The third House of Hamill album, “Folk Hero,” received strong support on Folk-DJ charts, as well as from Celtic music podcasters. Their fourth CD, “Wildfire,” is nearing completion. One of the tracks, “Banks of the Brandywine,” an ode to the folklore surrounding a notorious Brandywine River location, was released as a music video and single on March 1. • Kennett Flash, Kennett Square, presents a Singer Songwriter Showcase on Friday at 7 p.m. featuring Nera, Jillian Dolan, Jac Conner and Elise; a night of metal on Saturday at 7 p.m. featuring Boarzoy, Around the Fur (Deftones tribute) and Mesh; and singer-songwriter Antje Duvekot with special guest Bruce Carroll on Sunday at 7 p.m. Duvekot unveiled her fifth studio album, “New Wild West,” on Sept. 15. • The Newtown Theatre presents Van Halen Nation on Saturday at 8 p.m. and “Purple Piano: A One-Man Tribute to Prince” featuring Marshall Charloff on Sunday at 4 p.m. Van Halen Nation is the ultimate tribute to the David Lee Roth era of Van Halen. Comprised of four of the tri-state area’s top musicians, Van Halen Nation delivers signature David Lee Roth acrobatics and screams, Eddie Van Halen’s groundbreaking guitar playing, and Michael Anthony’s and Alex Van Halen’s thunderous rhythm section. Charloff has spent more than a decade establishing himself as the world’s leading Prince tribute artist. He recorded with Prince on the album “94 East,” on which he plays both keyboards and bass guitar with Prince on lead vocals. “Purple Piano” weaves together the highlights of Prince’s catalog through Charloff’s musicianship and mastery of audience engagement. • Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center, West Chester, presents “Whose Crime Is It Anyway?” on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and a sold-out concert by John Oates of Hall & Oates on Saturday at 8 p.m. Presented by Without a Cue Productions, “Whose Crime Is It Anyway?” is an interactive murder-mystery where the audience must determine not only whodunnit but also who the victim is. This hilarious, fast-paced romp turns improvisational theater on its ear by putting the audience completely in the driver’s seat, and leaving the actors to solve the mystery. • KU Presents!, the Kutztown University performing arts series, will finish this year’s Family Series with an imaginative rendition of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling” by New Orleans-based Lightwire Theater on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Schaeffer Auditorium on campus. Using their signature combination of electroluminescent effects, puppetry, dance and music, the company will create unforgettable images that will thrill audience members of all ages. Founded in 2007 by four professional dancers, Lightwire Theater was a semifinalist on Season 7 of “America’s Got Talent” in 2012 and has toured the United States and traveled all over the world to great acclaim. • With the help of the Hawk Mountain Chapter 31 of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology, the Dreibelbis Farm Historical Society will hold a Native American Spring Celebration at the historic Dreibelbis Farm in Virginville on Sunday at 2 p.m. This outdoor event will feature history and storytelling, Native American flute music, crafts, education and demonstration activities along with displays of ancient Indian artifacts.  Admission is free and open to the public (donations welcomed).  GPS address: 356 Hard Hill Road, Hamburg.

When most people think of the venerable character actor Louis Gossett Jr., who died Friday at 87 , they understandably summon up his Oscar-winning turn in the 1982 drama “An Officer and a Gentleman.” But he accumulated over 200 credits over a screen, stage and television career that spanned more than 60 years, and brought a skill set that included not only drama but also comedy, science fiction, action and horror. Here are a few highlights from his illustrious career and where to stream them.

Gossett had already established himself as an actor of note onstage, and in television guest shots and small but memorable appearances on film (“The Landlord,” “Skin Game”) when he was cast in the ABC mini-series adaptation of Alex Haley’s best seller. He plays the key role of Fiddler, an older enslaved man who becomes a mentor to the central character, Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton). Fiddler allows Gossett to display several of the gifts that would distinguish him throughout his career: an inherent dignity, a no-nonsense toughness and a (seemingly contradictory) warmth and humanity. The mini-series was a cultural sensation , breaking records for television viewership, and Gossett would win an Emmy for his unforgettable work.

Gossett was 45 when he won the Oscar for best supporting actor — the first Black actor to do so — for his magnificent turn in this Richard Gere-fronted romantic drama. The role of Sergeant Foley, the drill instructor who breaks Gere’s hotshot recruit while simultaneously becoming a father figure to the young man, could have been played as a walking, talking cliché. But Gossett, who trained for the role at Camp Pendleton’s school for drill instructors, transcends the tropes of the character, investing Foley with genuine decency and unexpected warmth under his rock-hard exterior. “Mr. Gossett, always a good supporting player, is this time a star,” our critic wrote at the time .

‘Enemy Mine’

Had Gossett landed a role like Foley a decade earlier, he might have spent the 1970s playing an assortment of rich and complicated characters. But the 1980s were not exactly a golden era of studio filmmaking, and he struggled to find projects worthy of his considerable talents, often proving the most (or only) noteworthy element of otherwise marginal action pictures like “Iron Eagle” and “Firewalker.” But he got a genuine chance to act in this futuristic sci-fi adventure from the director Wolfgang Petersen (“Air Force One”). Dennis Quaid is an intergalactic pilot marooned on a distant planet with an alien life form; Gossett is said alien, given the unenviable challenge of acting a leading role through pounds of scaly makeup that renders him all but unrecognizable. Yet he’s up to the task, investing the character with pathos and gravitas, while our knowledge of the actor underneath lends serious symbolic weight to the film’s themes of understanding and commonality between races.

One of the undiscovered gems of the Gossett filmography is this sports-tinged comedy, a bit of a specialty for the director Michael Ritchie, whose credits include “Semi-Tough” and “The Bad News Bears.” James Woods is a fast-talking con man and fight promoter who descends on the Georgia town of the title, known for its high-dollar illegal boxing matches, and makes a big bet: His fighter can take on any 10 opponents in 24 hours and beat them all. Gossett is Honey Roy Palmer, the fighter, and at 48, he seems like anything but a sure bet. But in this “Sting”-style twisty tale, no one and nothing are what they seem. It’s a perfect role for the actor, who plays it with a twinkle in his eye and plenty of tricks up his sleeve, and the result is “ a funny and vulgar fable ” that our critic praised for its “speed and cheerful nerviness.”

Gossett received his final Emmy nomination (for outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or movie) for this adaptation of the wildly influential graphic novel by Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore. Series creator Damon Lindelof freely reframed, reinterpreted and remixed the narrative out of its 1980s origins to address not only the hidden corners of America’s racial history, but also the current moment of activism and protest. Gossett appears in the vital supporting role of Will Reeves, grandfather to the protagonist, Angela Abar (Regina King), whose age and wheelchair use hide a secret past: while a policeman in the late 1930s, he took on the secret identity of Hooded Justice, righting the wrongs his racist police department ignored. It’s a staggering performance, and one that speaks to the power of Gossett’s persona: You don’t doubt for one moment that this man was once a literal superhero.

‘The Color Purple’

Though he has several posthumous projects in postproduction, the final feature film appearance during Gossett’s lifetime was his brief but stinging turn in Blitz Bazawule’s adaptation of the Alice Walker story. He appears as Ol’ Mister, father to Colman Domingo’s Mister, the abusive and domineering husband who keeps the protagonist, Celie, under his thumb. In just a handful of scenes, Gossett’s work as a growling, bitter old man tells us everything we need to know about how and why the younger Mister is the way he is. Gossett shared in the nomination for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and that might be the best way to remember him: as an invaluable piece of so many ensembles, a team player who nevertheless always shined bright.
