As many of our students are working professionals, all coursework is designed with flexibility in mind. Because the vast majority of the coursework is completely online, you can easily integrate your program into your busy schedule without putting your professional life on hold.

What You Can Learn

Our online meetings and events management program will help you become a leader in your industry. Our courses will help you take those next steps in your career by focusing on a variety of topics, including strategic leadership, stakeholder management, finances, business analytics, change management, and marketing. Students will learn about these topics from dedicated, experienced faculty members, many of whom also teach courses on SDSU’s main campus. Our courses are supplemented by frequent networking opportunities and on-site learning experiences with high-level meetings and events executives.

Why Should You Choose Us?

Connections

All of our students are paired with an experienced mentor at the beginning of the program. This mentor is a high-level leader with extensive experience in the meetings and events industry. Throughout the program, your mentor will help you with your coursework and your professional life by offering advice and guiding you towards success. You’ll gain a meaningful, professional connection with someone who has years of experience to share, and this connection is built to last well beyond your graduation.

Flexibility

We designed our program with today’s professionals in mind. Other than two weeks spent on San Diego State University’s beautiful campus, the entirety of this 21-month program is completely online. This means that you can take your courses and complete your assignments without putting your professional life on hold. Best of all, the coursework is practical, which means that many of the lessons that you learn can be applied to your job the very next day.

Versatility

This leadership degree is applicable to more than 100 hospitality and tourism-related industries and virtually any career path.

Proven Results

Research shows that event managers with a graduate degree make $8,000 more per year than those with a bachelor’s degree (Burning Glass Technologies, 2019). This program incorporates facets that are proven to drive measurable return on investment, including networking with industry leaders, mentorship matching, and a career-changing capstone project.

Be one of the first to earn your master’s degree in meeting and event management. Work on your own schedule, advance your career, and shape the future of meeting and event planning.

Student Research

“MIT Sloan PhD training is a transformative experience. The heart of the process is the student’s transition from being a consumer of knowledge to being a producer of knowledge. This involves learning to ask precise, tractable questions and addressing them with creativity and rigor. Hard work is required, but the reward is the incomparable exhilaration one feels from having solved a puzzle that had bedeviled the sharpest minds in the world!” -Ezra Zuckerman Sivan Alvin J. Siteman (1948) Professor of Entrepreneurship

Event Management (MS)

Program description.

The Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality offers the Master of Science in Event Management (MSEM), one of the first degrees of its kind in the country. Its cutting-edge curriculum, focused on the skills event managers need in this fast-growing, globally expanding industry, prepares students for event planning and management careers across private, public, and nonprofit organizations. This comprehensive program of study affords students the benefits and resources of earning an event management degree at NYU , while establishing themselves in New York City—home to venues such as Madison Square Garden and the Jacob Javits Center, and host to iconic events such as the U.S. Open and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The Master of Science in Event Management is a 36-credit program that includes a core curriculum, which provides the critical business skills required of event professionals, in the areas of finance and accounting, marketing, event production, risk management, and data analytics. The program also includes an internship requirement, affording students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in the event sector prior to graduation. (This component can be waived if the student has a minimum of two years of relevant, full-time work experience or the equivalent in part-time work.)

The program offers elective classes in three tracks—business development, sport event management, and event operations. Students can select courses from across these tracks, allowing them to tailor the program to their own interests and professional goals. A capstone class provides students with the option to choose between a consulting practicum and an individual thesis.

Taught by faculty members who are leading industry professionals, the program is structured to meet the needs of working professionals and full-time students. Typically, students complete the degree within one-and-a-half years of full-time study or in two to three years of part-time study. Learning occurs in the classroom and in the field. Networking opportunities, lecture series, research projects, and internships provide students with valuable pathways to achieve their professional objectives—whether they are just launching their event career or have been working in the industry for years.

Those individuals with relevant work experience may be eligible to waive a core course with departmental approval. Waivers allow students to take alternative courses in their field of interest; they do not reduce the number of credits required to earn the degree.

All applicants to the School of Professional Studies (SPS) are required to submit the  general application requirements , which include:

  • Application Fee
  • College/University Transcripts
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Degree Requirements
  • Recommendations
  • Kira Talent Assessment
  • Degree-Specific Requirements
  • English Language Assessment
  • Pearson Versant English Placement Test
  • International Transcript Evaluation
  • International Student Visa Requirements

See  degree specific application requirements for instructions specific to this program.

Program Requirements

The program requires the completion of 36 credits, comprised of the following:

Students with at least 2 years of relevant full-time work experience, or the equivalent in part-time work, may qualify for a waiver. Waiving the internship requirements allows students to take an additional 1.5 credits in electives.

Students may select classes across three different tracks. Students may also take up to 6 credits in the MS in Tourism Management, MS in Hospitality Industry Studies, or related programs in consultation with their adviser.

Students are required to complete one of the capstone courses. For the Individual Thesis option, departmental approval is needed after submitting a proposal.

Business Development

Sport event management, event operations, sample plan of study, full-time plan of study, part-time plan of study, learning outcomes.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be able to:

  • Analyze the industry; and be able to articulate a nuanced evaluation of its buyers, suppliers, intermediaries, legislative environment and processes.
  • Apply the principles of strategic planning, management and decision-making to common industry processes and challenges.
  • Effectively collect and analyze data, which they will be able to use for critical, evidence based decision making when faced with industry challenges.
  • Evaluate industry principles and trends from a global perspective; by applying concepts to examples and scenarios in different geographical regions, and recognizing global best practice.
  • Apply the business skills expected of contemporary, global event professionals; including finance, sales and marketing, HRM, risk management and business development skills.
  • Articulate their thoughts effectively in a written format, by writing clearly structured and professionally prepared reports, memos, and essays.
  • Present their ideas effectively, by preparing presentations with a professional design and clear structure, and by delivering presentations confidently.
  • Analyze specific and specialized areas of the event industry, by applying concepts from their core curriculum to business development, event operations and/or sport events contexts.

Alumnus Spotlight: Josh Lee (MBA ‘14)

Josh Lee

Balanced is a great word to describe Josh Lee, a 2014 MBA graduate of the Weatherhead School of Management.  He has both the strong technical skills needed to launch products in today’s digital intensive business world and the leadership skills to inspire the teams needed to make it happen.  This is also the reason he chose to get his MBA from Weatherhead.

“The main reason I chose Weatherhead was the school’s reputation for being very heavy in the academics and being a wholistic offering across all the different practices, as well as never downplaying the soft skills to lead and inspire others,” said Lee.

Lee spearheaded major product design projects for such brands as Rite Aid, Fashionphile and Nordstrom rack.  “I love leading product teams and inventing stuff, because it allows me to be a builder of builders, “explained Lee.

Get to Know More About Lee :

What is your favorite memory at Weatherhead?

“Karaoke nights at the Jolly Scholar, ideating/competing with classmates.”

What is something interesting you're working on personally or professionally?

"I design and build electric guitars in my free time. It requires you to be very multidisciplinary and I can often get lost in it."

What advice would you share with current students?

"Some wisdom given to me before attending WSOM was "GAIN/MAINTAIN PERSPECTIVE." Here's some ways that have helped me when I needed it:

  • Go hard - go deep into hobbies and own them. You'll find answers in simple things you love.
  • Be compassionate - caring for others can lead to answers about yourself.
  • Stay vulnerable - be brutally honest/genuine with yourself."
