There are numerous characteristics of a good essay: original thinking, a tight structure, balanced arguments, and many more .

But one aspect often overlooked is that a good essay should be interesting . It should spark the curiosity of the reader, keep them absorbed, make them want to keep reading and learn more. A boring essay risks losing the reader’s attention; even if the points you make are excellent, a dull writing style or poor handling of a dry subject matter can undermine the positive aspects of the essay. The problem is that many students think that essays should be like this: they think that a dull, dry style is suited to the purposes of academic writing, and don’t consider that the teacher reading their essay wants to find the essay interesting. Academic writing doesn’t have to be – and shouldn’t be – boring. The good news is that there are plenty of things you can do to make your writing more interesting, even though you can only do so much while remaining within the formal confines of academic writing. Let’s look at what they are.

1. Be interested in what you’re writing about

Image shows a woman looking very enthusiastic on a carousel.

If there’s one thing guaranteed to inject interest into your writing, it’s actually being interested in what you’re writing about. Passion for a subject comes across naturally in your writing, typically making it more lively and engaging, and infusing an infectious enthusiasm into your words – in the same way that it’s easy to chat knowledgeably to someone about something you find interesting. This makes it relatively easy to write interestingly about a subject you have a real passion for. However, problems arise when you’re forced to write an essay about subjects for which you lack enthusiasm. It’s difficult to conjure up passion for your least favourite subjects, and that will come across in your writing. There are steps you can take, though: here are some tips on writing about a subject you don’t enjoy.

  • Adjust your mindset : convince yourself that there are no boring subjects. If the subject or essay comes across as boring, blame yourself; if you find yourself feeling negatively about it, try to find the interest in it. Think about how it relates to the real world and how important the subject is. Find interesting snippets of information about it and look at it from a new angle.
  • Think about your reader : consider the fact that not everyone will find the subject as boring as you do. As you write, keep the reader in mind and imagine them to be the world’s biggest fan of this subject.
  • Find the fans : if you find it impossible to get into the mindset of your audience, try Googling the subject to find forums, videos or blog posts in which the subject is discussed by people who do find it interesting. This will help you picture whom you’re writing for, and give you a different perspective on a subject you may not have found inspiring up to now.

2. Include fascinating details

Image shows a rose blooming.

Another factor that can make an essay boring is a dry subject matter. Some subjects or topic areas are naturally dry, and it falls to you to make the essay more interesting through your written style (more on this later) and by trying to find fascinating snippets of information to include that will liven it up a bit and make the information easier to relate to. One way of doing this with a dry subject is to try to make what you’re talking about seem relevant to the real world, as this is easier for the reader to relate to. In a discussion of a seemingly boring piece of legislation, for instance, you could make a comment along the lines of “if it were not for this legislation, none of us would enjoy the freedom to do such and such today”, or “Legislation A ultimately paved the way for Legislation B, which transformed criminal law as we know it.” Make it seem exciting!

3. Emulate the style of writers you find interesting

When you read a lot, you subconsciously start emulating the style of the writers you read. It’s therefore beneficial to read widely, as this exposes you to a range of styles and you can start to take on the characteristics of those you find interesting to read. If you feel engaged with a piece of writing, the writer must be doing something right! As you read, think consciously about what the writer is doing to hold your interest, perhaps underlining or copying out certain phrases, techniques, sentence structures and so on. Then apply their techniques to your own writing.

4. Write in the active voice

Image shows scientists at work in the desert.

It’s the oldest trick in the book, but using the active rather than the passive voice will automatically make your writing more interesting to read. It results in more direct, energetic writing that makes the reader feel more ‘in the moment’. Unfortunately, many students employ the passive voice in the belief that it makes their writing sound more academic or intellectual; in fact, it makes their writing sound boring. Remember, the active voice is when the subject of the sentence “acts”, while the passive voice is when the subject is acted upon. Passive : It was concluded by the scientists that the methods used were… Active : The scientists concluded that the methods used were… The subject in this example is “the scientists” and the “act” they are carrying out is “concluding”. As you can see in this example, the active voice almost always results in neater and more elegant phrasing, which is more concise and enjoyable to read.

5. Borrow some creative writing techniques

There’s clearly a limit to the amount of actual ‘story-telling’ you can do when you’re writing an essay; after all, essays should be objective, factual and balanced, which doesn’t, at first glance, feel very much like story-telling. However, you can apply some of the principles of story-telling to make your writing more interesting. For example, just as the opening sentence or paragraph of a novel is incredibly important in capturing the attention of the reader early on, so the first paragraph of your essay is essential in making your reader want to continue reading it. Start with an attention-grabbing ‘hook’ to draw them in, such as a controversial statement, a tantalising snippet of information or a rhetorical question (more on these below). Here are some more techniques you can adopt from creative writing to improve your essays .

6. Think about your own opinion

Image shows a baby thinking.

Your essay is bound to be boring if all you do is paraphrase what everyone else says about something. A good essay – in humanities subjects, at least – incorporates the writer’s intelligent responses to what others say, and this critical consideration not only shows that you’re thinking at a high academic level, but it automatically adds more interest and originality to your writing. So, think independently and don’t be afraid to demonstrate that you’re doing as much.

7. Cut the waffle

Rambling on and on is boring, and almost guaranteed to lose the interest of your reader. You’re at risk of waffling if you’re not completely clear about what you want to say, or if you haven’t thought carefully about how you’re going to structure your argument. Doing your research properly and writing an essay plan before you start will help prevent this problem. Editing is an important part of the essay-writing process, so once you’ve done a first draft, edit out the waffle. Read through your essay objectively and take out the bits that aren’t relevant to the argument or that labour the point. As well as editing out chunks of text, it’s important to be economical with words – not using ten where five will suffice, and avoiding clunky phrases such as those outlined in this article . During the editing process, tighten up your phrasing by eliminating unnecessary words and reordering any sentences that read badly.

8. Using a thesaurus isn’t always a good thing

Image shows a thesaurus against a yellow background.

You may think that using a thesaurus to find more complicated words will make your writing more interesting, or sound more academic, but using overly high-brow language can have the wrong effect. It alienates the reader and makes you sound pompous, with the result that the essay is more laborious to read and the reader may quickly lose interest. Despite this, many undergraduates admit to deliberately over-complicating their language to make it sound more high-brow. If you want to keep your reader interested, keep your language clear and simple.

9. Avoid repetitive phrasing

Avoid using the same sentence structure again and again: it’s a recipe for dullness! Instead, use a range of syntax that demonstrates your writing capabilities as well as making your writing more interesting. Mix simple, compound and complex sentences to avoid your writing becoming predictable.

10. Use some figurative language

Image shows a hawk screeching.

As we’ve already seen, it’s easy to end up rambling when you’re explaining difficult concepts, – particularly when you don’t clearly understand it yourself. A way of forcing yourself to think clearly about a concept, as well as explaining it more simply and engagingly, is to make use of figurative language. This means explaining something by comparing it with something else, as in an analogy. For example, you might use the analogy of water escaping from a hole in a bucket to explain the exponential decay of a radioactive substance, as the rate of depletion of both depends on how much remains, making it exponential. This gives the reader something familiar to visualise, making it easier for them to understand a new concept (obviously this will not be a new concept for the teacher who set your essay, but they will want to see that you can explain concepts clearly and that you have a thorough grasp of it yourself).

11. Avoid clichés

Clichés are overused words or phrases that make your writing predictable, and therefore less interesting. An example would be “at the end of the day”, but there are many such favourites of student essay-writers. Don’t forget that your teacher will have a stack of essays to read in one sitting; if you use the same tired expressions everyone else uses, your essay will blend in with all the others. Make it stand out by shunning the clichés you know your classmates will be using.

12. Employ rhetorical questions

One of the ways in which ancient orators held the attention of their audiences and increased the dramatic effect of their speeches was by making use of the rhetorical question. What is a rhetorical question? It’s essentially one you ask without expecting your audience to answer – one that you will answer yourself, like the one we asked in the previous sentence. This can be an effective way of introducing a new line of enquiry, or of raising questions that you’re going to address in more detail. A good place to use a rhetorical question is at the end of a paragraph, to lead into the next one, or at the beginning of a new paragraph to introduce a new area for exploration. The rhetorical question, “But is there any evidence to support X’s claim?” could, for instance, begin a paragraph that discusses evidence for an opinion introduced in the previous paragraph. What’s more, as we’ve already seen, you could use a rhetorical question as your ‘hook’ to lure readers in right at the beginning of your essay.

13. Proofread

Finally, you could write the most interesting essay a teacher has ever read, but you’ll undermine your good work if it’s littered with errors, which distract the reader from the actual content and will probably annoy them. Before you submit your essay, proofread it thoroughly to ensure that the grammar is elegant, the punctuation is perfect and the spelling is flawless. Don’t just use a spelling and grammar checker, as these don’t always pick up on all the errors.

Do you want to take your writing to the next level? Our Creative Writing summer school will teach you how to experiment with a number of different writing techniques, plan, edit and proofread your own work and introduce you to new concepts and ideas.

How to make your essay better

Essay writing doesn’t have to be intimidating. With a few tips, you can improve your writing skills for any type of academic essay.

How to Write Better Essays

7 tips on how to make your essay better, how to become a better essay writer.

The best way to sum up how to write better essays is, “Make sure you’re answering the question.”

This sounds obvious, but you would be surprised how many students struggle with this.

From not understanding the prompt to poor research skills to off-topic body paragraphs, it’s easy for an essay to derail.

We’ve got seven tips for writing better essays that will help you avoid common mistakes and craft the best essays possible.

7 tips for imrpoving your essay

Here are our top tips for improving your essay writing skills.

Understand the Prompt or Research Question

The first step in your writing process is to fully understand the essay topic. If your professor gave you a prompt for your academic essay, spend some time analyzing it.

First, take note of whether you’re writing an expository or persuasive essay. The tone, structure, and word choice will differ between essay types.

Pay close attention to the wording of the prompt.

If your teacher wants you to “analyze” the effects of new technology in World War I, but you turn in a descriptive overview of the technology, you are not answering the question.

If they have given you a topic but no prompt, you’ll need to create a guiding question for your research.

Be specific in what you are trying to research, or you’ll end up overwhelmed with a topic that is too big in scope.

“Symbolism in modern literature” is too broad for a term paper, but “How does F. Scott Fitzgerald use symbolism in The Great Gatsby ?” is an achievable topic.

Improve your essay tip

Take Excellent Notes

Once you understand exactly what your essay is about, you can begin the research phase. Create a strong note-taking system.

Write down any idea or quote you might want to use. Cite every note properly to save time on your citations and to avoid accidental plagiarism.

Once you have gathered your research, organize your notes into categories. This will help you plan the structure of your essay.

You’ll likely find that some of your research doesn’t fit into your essay once you start writing. That’s okay—it’s better to have too much information to support your argument than too little.

Write a Strong Thesis Statement

Possibly the most important step in essay writing is to craft a strong thesis statement. A thesis statement is a brief—usually single-sentence—explanation of what your essay is about.

The thesis statement guides the entire essay: every point you make should support your thesis.

A strong thesis is specific and long enough to address the major points of your essay.

In a persuasive or argumentative essay, your thesis should clearly establish the argument you are making.

Make an Outline

Once you have all your research, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. How do you turn the information into a cohesive essay?

Rather than writing an essay with no roadmap, an outline will keep you on track. An outline helps you organize your thoughts, plan your arguments, and sort your research.

A good outline saves you time, too! You can compile the relevant evidence in your notes before writing, so you don’t have to find that specific quote in the middle of essay writing.

An outline will also stop you from reading your finished essay and realizing you went completely off track.

With an outline, you can avoid finding paragraphs that don’t support your thesis right before you submit the essay.

Improve your essay tip

Craft a Great Introduction

An academic essay needs a strong introductory paragraph.

The introduction is the first impression of your essay. It prepares the reader for what’s coming and gets them excited to read your paper.

A good introduction has three things:

  • A hook (e.g. insightful statement, quote, interesting fact)
  • Brief background information about the topic
  • A thesis statement

Using this formula will help you write a strong introduction for your essay.

Have Original Ideas and Interpretations

The best academic writing advice a professor ever gave me was, “You’ve shown me what other people have said about the topic. I want to know what you think about the topic.”

Even a fact-heavy or data-heavy essay needs original ideas and interpretations. For every piece of information you cite, whether you quote or paraphrase it , offer original commentary.

Focus on insights, new interpretations, or even questions that you have. These are all ways to provide original ideas in your essay.

Proofread for Readability

A good essay is a proofread essay.

Readability, or how easy something is to read, has many factors. Spelling and grammar are important, but so is sentence structure, word choice , and other stylistic features.

Academic essays should be readable without being too simple. In general, aim for a readability score that is close to your grade level in school.

There are several ways to check readability scores, including using ProWritingAid’s Readability Report.

Phrases You Can Use To Make Your Essays More Interesting

Only a brilliant essay can guarantee you a good grade. But, there’s quite a lot to be inserted into a paper aside from relevant data and a crafty introduction. A great essay always contains the right phrases and transition words. This makes it properly articulated and persuasive, two characteristics that are essential for quality writing.

To make an essay outstanding and A-grade worthy, you need to learn some great phrases and where to insert them. Now, without further ado, I’m presenting you with the best phrases to use in an essay to make it brilliant.

Explaining and Introducing Something

1. in order to.

In order to make an essay excellent, you need introductory phrases such as this one. This is one of the most popular paragraph starters and is used to introduce some type of an explanation for an argument.

how to make essay more attractive

2. To this end / To that end

If you need another way to say ‘in order to’, this is the perfect alternative. Spice your content up a little. These phrases are used to introduce an idea or an explanation.

3. That is to say/ That is

To introduce further detail to something you’ve said previously, or make your writing more precise – use one of these two phrases. These are used after an idea has been introduced, always at the beginning of a sentence. In most cases, a comma follows this phrase.

4. In other words / To put it another way

When you want to explain something or clarify it further, these are the phrases to use. Once again, these belong to the beginning of the sentence, and are often used as a paragraph starter. They are the perfect addition to essays that explain complex points or give detailed definitions.

Providing Additional Information

5. moreover / furthermore .

Good transition words make an essay look more professional and better researched. Yes, instructors pay attention to such things and the use of transition words can turn a dull essay into one that flows perfectly. Moreover and furthermore are such words. Used at the beginning of sentences, these words allow you to introduce and add extra information to support an idea or point.

how to make essay more attractive

6. What is more

As a longer alternative to moreover and furthermore, you can use this phrase. It has the same effect and it increases the word count. Also, it’s three words in a sentence that make your essay look more appealing to the reader.

7. Similarly / Likewise

These two words are used to talk about something that confirms what you’ve said before. This is often used in persuasive and argumentative essays that require a lot of research to support an idea. If you’re having trouble finding enough data or organizing it, you can always turn to a help service and ask them: make an essay for me on this topic. You’re probably going to find one of these words in such papers.

8. Another key thing to remember / Another key point to remember

If you’re trying to write more words, these two phrases will introduce additional facts, same as the word ‘also’. Plus, they give clarity to a piece of content that’s based on a lot of supportive data.

9. Not only... but also

This is a play with words, type of wording that allows you to add information that’s unexpected and surprising. It’s used to give your writing a more exciting effect.

10. As well as

Whenever you feel like your essay is filled with the same words such as ‘and’ or ‘also’, use this phrase instead. It carries the same meaning, gives your content some versatility, and has a bigger word count.

11. Firstly, secondly

There’s no limit as to how far you can get with this, but too much data can be overwhelming. So, you’ll probably get to secondly and thirdly, maybe even finish with the word ‘finally’. This is another play with words that helps you clarify and organize the data.

12. To say nothing of / Not to mention

For some emphasis and additional information, use these finely tuned phrases. They aren’t so frequently used in essays, so yours will stand out and make you look as an amazing researcher.

Demonstrating Contrast

13. however.

However is a really frequently word used. It’s a transitional word, a word that belongs at the beginning of a sentence, and a tool that allows you to introduce contrast.

14. On the other hand / Having said that

This particular phrase carries the same meaning as ‘however’, so if you’ve used the first before, it’s time to spice things up with this phrase. Use it to introduce a different piece of evidence, an opposing idea or opinion, or a contrasting interpretation of the thing you’ve presented before it.

15. Then again

Do you perhaps want to cast some doubt on the point of view you are against? If you’re trying to make an argument that proves your point is the right point, or persuade someone to take the action you believe is right, this is the way to introduce some doubt.

There are plenty of phrases you can use to enrich your essay, and these are quite a nice way to start. Remember – practice makes perfect. Learn through reading and writing and you’ll master the writing skill in no time!

How to Make an Essay Look Attractive – 8 Important Steps

how to make essay more attractive

Essays are comprehensive pieces of writing about a particular subject. They are separated into official and informal groups.

Students write formal essays on social challenges, environmental concerns, adjusting to changes, technical advancements, how to overcome anxieties, and well-known landmarks and histories.

Informal essays are produced for assignments and school publications and are told as stories.

Language choice, sentence structure, tense, and person are the main differences between formal and informal writing.

An informal essay is conversational as if the writer directly chats with the reader. Still, a good essay should be intriguing and pique the reader’s attention.

Table of Contents

Ways To Make Your Essay Interesting And Attractive

how to make essay more attractive

Given below are some of the best techniques that can make your essay stand out and look attractive—

1. Invest Your Interest In The Topic First

It is extremely crucial that you  choose a topic that excites you and directly gets your attention.

When you are interested in your subject, you are more likely to be inspired to learn more about it and conduct extra research, leading to a more interesting and educational piece of writing.

When you’re required to write an essay about a subject you don’t particularly love or find intriguing, finding a method to relate it to something you do is crucial.

Positivity in all areas might help you learn new things and see things from different angles. Consider the relevance to the real world and the significance of the subject.

You can get a new viewpoint and a better idea of the audience you’re writing for by researching the topic online.

2. Include Details That Draw Images In The Reader’s Mind

how to make essay more attractive

An essay might become monotonous with a dry subject. Therefore, adding interest through your writing style and gathering relevant facts is critical.

For instance, examining how these regulations impact various income groups and using examples from real-world situations, a research paper on tax laws might be made more interesting.

Anecdotes or personal experiences can add interest and relatability to a boring topic.

By emphasizing how the legislation affects people’s lives and society, you may make an otherwise boring topic appear relevant to everyday life.

It is crucial to structure and deliver the material in a way that grabs the audience’s attention and helps them understand the importance of what could otherwise appear insignificant.

3. Create An Outline Before Starting

how to make essay more attractive

The significance of an outline while writing an essay is the key information in this work.

With a fine structure and spreads information and images uniformly throughout the work, your essay can be more interesting and remembered by the reader if it has a clear and logical flow.

Writing a logical essay that others can comprehend is critical, particularly for persuasive essays that aim to influence someone’s behavior.

Social media and reputable essay writing services like custom-writing.co.uk can help you succeed academically by offering premium essays, research papers, and other academic projects.

4. Pay Attention To Your Vocabulary, Grammar And Context

how to make essay more attractive

The two sorts of wrongness while writing an essay—overcomplication and vagueness—are the most crucial facts in this article.

To earn excellent marks, being exact and grammatically correct is crucial. Overcomplicating things and being imprecise are two examples of wrongness.

The essay’s subject has its terminology and body of knowledge that are crucial.

When linked, minor words become insignificant elements of the essay, so people should be aware of what they imply and consider the context in which they are being used.

Effective punctuation is crucial to communicating ideas; precise, complex phrases may make all the difference.

A confident tone of voice reassures the reader that you know what you are talking about and that they are in good hands, which aids in constructing a superior essay.

5. Keep Your Introduction Brief But Catchy

how to make essay more attractive

Since the introduction is the essay’s first section, it must be interesting and informative. It should open with an attention-getter or anecdote that captivates the reader from the first word.

Additionally, it’s crucial to consider your audience’s interests and adjust your introduction accordingly.

It’s also crucial to communicate your ideas and convictions concise yet memorable way, like with a quotation or phrase that sums up the problems and arguments you’ll be discussing throughout your essay.

Additionally, starting your essay with a personal anecdote or story that highlights the topic’s significance and engages the reader emotionally is critical.

6. Use Active Voice

A tried-and-true method for making writing more exciting to read is to use the active voice instead of the passive one.

While passive voice can make your writing boring and indirect, active voice highlights the subject and makes the sentence more direct and interesting.

However, passive voice is sometimes appropriate because the object should be the main point of attention rather than the subject.

It is crucial for students to comprehend how active and passive voice affects their writing and to select the best voice for the situation and goal.

Additionally, using active voice in their writing can help students create clear, concise writing that draws readers in. It is crucial to understand when and how to utilize the active voice in their writing.

7. Consider Taking Help

how to make essay more attractive

When writing an essay and beautifying it, it is important that you first go through some of the works of the finest essayists.

Learning from the best is always a sure shot to success.

Moreover, if you’re stuck or facing writer’s block, you must get help from your teachers, professors, guides, or even friends.

A short discussion on your essay’s topic can help open up new ideas. It will also help you look at the matter from a different perspective.

This is extremely important when you are trying to craft an attractive essay.

You can also order samples from an online essay-writing service. These services are highly affordable and accessible. They provide you with essays crafted by subject experts that are 100% plagiarism free.

You can find some of the best samples here:  https://www.ivoryresearch.com/essay-writing-services/

Write An Excellent Piece!

The rules of storytelling can improve the interest level of an essay.

These include opening with an eye-catching “hook” to pique the reader’s interest, such as a controversial statement, a tease-inducing fact, or a rhetorical question.

Reading extensively is also advantageous since it exposes you to various writing styles and may help you emulate the qualities of those you find appealing.

Consider how the author keeps your attention as you read, and you should underline or copy out specific words, strategies, sentence patterns, etc.

What is an Impressive Essay?

The first question that usually bothers budding writers is what is an impressive essay? The meaning is nothing unknown that only a dictionary can define. Instead, it is an rhetorical analysis essay where you provide a creative style and proper information about your topic.

Now, the important thing is there is no different rule for impressive essay writing. You have to follow the same old format - thesis, hook, introduction, body and conclusion. The challenge is to showcase the uniqueness within this section.

Moreover, most writers only fulfill the essay with an abundance of information and somehow wrap it up in conclusion. That’s not what a reader expects from you! Instead, you have to show what’s your take on the topic is.

When you present an idea with this approach, this proves your authorship and ultimately can impress the one who will read it.

How to Write an Impressive Essay?

If you look at some of the great works like the essays of Samuel Johnson, you will see that the essays are not general text. They reflect the writer's techniques and identity. Famous writers like Johnson followed the traditional format of a well-structured essay yet keeping it conversational.

So, it all boils down to how you present your essay. For that, here is your roadmap -

1. Plan for Each Section of the Essay

Often writers get excited about the topic and start exploring it. However, there is a time limit for everything and that’s you need a schedule to do your task before writing.

Hence, here is a template of time table you can apply when planning for your essay -

2. Prepare the Layout of Discussion

Your essay must have a logical framework, with all of your points coming together to address the question, just like an argument or speech would.

So, select a few key elements that will serve as the focal points of your primary paragraphs.

Given the time limit, three key paragraphs is a fair number for an academic essay. If you agree with the question in its entirety, you can do these steps -

  • Format your points as YES (agreement with the question)
  • Add AND (another "YES" point)
  • Add BUT (disagreement or complication) or YES - BUT - AND if you disagree.

This will make sure that you stay on topic and stay close to the main question throughout your whole argument.

3. Analyze the Question You Put as an Argument

Before you research topic examples , know that you will provide an answer as an essay to the topic. So, your initial step should be to analyze the question because an essay must explicitly respond to it. Make sure you understand the request being made of you.

Hence, do a draft comprising these three sections:

  • Content terms: Key concepts specific to your topic
  • Limiting terms: The scope that your topic will focuses on
  • Directive terms: What you need to do in relation to the content, e.g. discuss, analyze, define, compare, evaluate .

For example, if your topic is - ‘Highlight on the importance of light as a significant element in Gothic Architecture ’,   the areas you can analyze are -

  • Content terms -’Gothic architecture’ is the primary term in the content.
  • Limiting terms - ‘The importance of light. You would stray from the task at hand if you talked about another aspect of Gothic architecture, like spires or arches. This essay question is just supposed to talk about light. Similar to that, it requires you to write on the value of light rather than, for instance, how light enters Gothic churches.
  • Directive term - 'Highlight'. You are expected to explore the various ways that light may be significant for Gothic architecture with a broad perspective during this semester. Using suitable citations, you should introduce and discuss various concepts and viewpoints you have seen in academic literature on this subject.

4. Define Your Thesis Point

You put the thesis statement at the beginning while you are organizing. This entails selecting a side or point of view on the subject under discussion in the question, defining it, and putting out a focused defense.

To give you a better idea, read the below two argument statements:

‘The architectural approach of light in Gothic monuments embodied the role of light in medieval theology’.

‘ In the Gothic monuments of Cologne, the element of light accentuates the authority and ritual centrality of the priest’ .

These kinds of claims describe the argument in an argumentative essay. They lend coherence by offering a unifying theme and point of view that the entire essay is focused on.

5. Use Rationale & Evidence

You must use reasoning and evidence to persuade your audience of your position, which requires citing and analyzing pertinent scholarship. Evidence offers specific details to back up your assertion. It mostly includes references of facts, quotes, statistics, and even instances.

Note that the evidence should be linked to your argument. This is possible with reasoning. You should assess the ever proof and accordingly explain its relevance with your argument rather than listing out data like a grocery list.

Apart from that, institutions like Oxford Scholastica Academy suggest literary techniques like Tricolon, Tautology, Parallelism, Chiasmus, Polysyndeton etc . to strengthen your arguments while reasoning.

6. Write the Three Fundamental Parts

Your essay typer cannot be built without the introduction, body and conclusion. So, gather your findings and write as mentioned below -

  • Introduction

For an impressive essay introduction, present the idea and background in the following order:

  • A broad remark regarding the subject that frames your argument
  • An argument-based thesis statement. You can start sentences out directly by saying, "This essay argues that..."
  • A "road map" for the essay, outlining how you'll present and develop your argument for the reader.

Here is an example -

Question "To what extent can the American Revolution be understood as a revolution ‘from below?? Why did working people become involved and with what aims in mind?"

Historians generally concentrate on the twenty-year period between 1763 and 1783 as the period which constitutes the American Revolution [This sentence sets the general context of the period]. However, when considering the involvement of working people, or people from below, in the revolution it is important to make a distinction between the pre-revolutionary period 1763-1774 and the revolutionary period 1774-1788, marked by the establishment of the continental Congress (1) [This sentence defines the key term from below and gives more context to the argument that follows]. This paper will argue that the nature and aims of the actions of working people are difficult to assess as they change according to each phase [This is the thesis statement]. The pre-revolutionary period was characterized by opposition to Britain's authority. During this period the aims and actions of the working people were more conservative as they responded to grievances related to taxes and scarce land, issues which directly affected them. However, examination of activities such as the organization of crowd action and town meetings, pamphlet writing, formal communications to Britain of American grievances and physical action in the streets, demonstrates that their aims and actions became more revolutionary after 1775 [These sentences give the 'road map' or overview of the content of the essay]

Your thesis is developed and expanded upon throughout the essay's body. In fact, the body accomplishes this by laying out a compelling argument supported by data from pertinent scholarly materials. But note that the essay outline should match the overview you will provide in the body section.

Now, primarily, for an impressive way to start an essay body, organize the paragraphs into two sections. One will be the key idea that supports your case and the one that will provide other data and information.

If you plan for a third paragraph, you can narrow down the idea and raise your concern or opinion.

It's the section where you will basically summarize. Hence, prefer to add nothing. If you are wondering why, well the reader should already get the knowledge from the body of the essay.

What you will do here is restate your major point of contention. Also, you must provide the initial ideas in a gist. But here is a catch - Provide Your New Findings on the Established Idea.

Additionally, you can tell your readers the below things as well -

  • What do your findings mean or what are your conclusion's repercussions?
  • Whether there are more aspects that should be examined but fall outside the purview of the essay?
  • How does your subject relate to the discipline's larger context (or "bigger picture")?

When you follow all the above steps, you will now worry more about how to write an impressive essay? Because, the above steps apply to any topic, word count and article you prefer to write and impress!

Tips for Impressive Essay Writing

For impressive essay writing, there cannot be enough steps. You will often feel the need of something extra or what's lacking in your writing.

While a little self-criticism is good, don’t get carried away as here is the pack of tips that will make your essay worth an A+!

1. Clarity is key when writing

Effective writing in an essay means concise and straightforward. So, if you have written unnecessary adverbs and prepositional phrases, you need to erase those loose filler words. They only add extra words to a statement and make it longer.

2. Pick your words carefully

You can express the same idea in a sentence in a variety of ways using a variety of words. Instead of writing lofty phrases, prefer the known common vocabulary. Readers always prefer simple words for quick grasping. So, always pick the less complicated of two words.

3. Long sentences lack the impact of short sentences

Wordiness makes a story lose its momentum. Moreover, readers prefer short sentences because it gives the content a visual of short length. So, try not to exaggerate too much into a single line. There should only be one notion or thinking per phrase.

4. Create concise paragraphs

Keep your paragraph concise with one topic on each part. Each one should be made up of phrases that explain the same concept. Additionally, it improves the page's layout visually.

5. Use the active voice in majority of the writing

Stick to the ‘Subject-Verb-Object’ sentence structure and use the active voice. Now, passive voice is technically correct but it leads to lengthy, complex phrases. As a result it makes the essay weaker in conveying information.

6. Be conversational and natural in your tone

Your individual voice is the foundation of your writing style. Hence, be comfortable when you communicate. In other words, write like you are talking to your reader. For this, you must make an effort to steer clear of clichés while shaping ideas with your unique thoughts and voice.

7. Study works on renowned authors

Almost every bibliophile loves Mark Twain. What’s the specialty? It's by the tone of the story and the phrases he employs that you can tell that the book is by Mark Twain. The writing of great writers is marked by a distinctive style. Hence, why not get some inspiration and improve your creativity?

8. Give your writing some rest before editing

Avoid editing just after you've completed writing whenever you can. After a little interval, return and review with fresh eyes. You can go from being a writer to an editor by simply taking a short break for a walk or a cup of coffee.

9. Eliminate extraneous words and phrases

It's time to trim the fat when editing. Each word in the phrase must have a purpose, and those that aren't fulfilling your purpose should be erased.

10. Improve your use of commas

One frequently misused punctuation mark is the comma. There are several guidelines for using commas correctly, but if you study them, they'll come naturally to you.

11. Read what you have written aloud

Reading your writing aloud is one of the ideal and preferred ways to spot awkward sentence construction. If you stumble when reading, go back and see if you can clarify the sentence you stumbled over.

12. Keep a list of the errors you commit frequently

Almost everyone struggles with writing an essay that creates a benchmark. So, make a note of your common errors so you can quickly identify and correct them the next time.

13. Learn about your reader before finalizing your essay

Consider the current knowledge of your target reader or audience as you write. How might your writing help to inform and improve their reality in light of what it is? This assessment will give a cross check of how your essay turned out.

14. Call a friend for neutral perspective

Just keep in mind the acronym Twywaltr, which stands for - Take What You Want And Leave The Rest

This will help you filter out the issues in your academic essay and turn it into a perfect writing.

'Science in everyday life'

Science is a part of our everyday life. In its broadest meaning science means 'knowledge'. And, as knowledge, it had entered the life of even the most primitive human beings. They knew, in protein and carbohydrate and containing vitamins. The result is a healthy prolonged life. One can imagine how life must have been in pre-scientific days. Science has also improved clothing and made it more appropriate for climatic and working conditions. Man-made fibers and versatile spinning machines, today enable us to dress in clothes both comfortable and smart without being expensive.

We can't think of our everyday life without science. For instance, the safe from the poisonous berry. They knew some rudimentary ideas about building a hut, sharpening a spear, and fishing in the river. This is what is science which distinguishes man from the animals which rely on their instinct.

Yet, for most people 'science' means a number of abstract subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology and mechanics, to quote a few, which have to be learnt as part of 'education', yet which seem to have little bearing on everyday living. This is all wrong. Our way of life is completely dependent on science and its inventions and discoveries surround us on all sides.

Since the Renaissance science has been in protein and carbohydrate and containing vitamins. The result is a healthy prolonged life. One can imagine how life must have been in pre-scientific days. Science has also improved clothing and made it more appropriate for climatic and working conditions. Man-mo the present. Today, we have many consumer goods from the simple frying-pan to the airplane, from the alarm-clock to the laptop. All these things serve to make life easier and more pleasant. Science gives us safe food, free of harmful germs, in hygienic tins. The result is a healthy prolonged life. One can imagine how life must have been in pre-scientific days. Science has also improved clothing and made it more appropriate for climatic and working conditions.

We can't think of our everyday life without science.

'The world of entertainment'

Entertainment, something that provides amusement or enjoyment, is one of the basic needs of humans. Man has needed and indulged in entertainment. Greek tragedy and comedy, Indian epic dramas, were an important feature of ancient society, staged in impressive open-air theaters. Puppet shows of the East, even today, can draw crowds of village spectators. Singing and dancing have been there since ages. This is how it has been, and will always be in all parts of the world.

'Entertainment' implies non-participation by the audience. A cricket match may be entertainment to the spectators, but it is sport to the players. To be 'entertained', we must be content to look, and to listen.dern entertainment is highly organized business and has great variety. Especially in a big city every conceivable form of entertainment can be had, the greatest of all being cinema and music, especially to young people! There is a glamor and glitter about it all which makes it irresistible. The prominent 'stars', especially, the 'pop' stars, of today become the idols of the adolescents. The stars from Hollywood and Bollywood can be taken as examples.

Beneath the glitter and the glamor, however, lies hardship and disappointment for the majority. The promoters, the managers and the impresarios are never poor men, and the entertainer becomes pathetically dependent on them -- especially when his public image is fading. But despite all this, we still have the professionals and always shall have entertainment. Because the world of entertainment has an eternal, irresistible glamor. 'The show must go on !' How to Write an Essay Introduction | 4 Steps & Examples

Published on February 4, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on July 23, 2023.

A good introduction paragraph is an essential part of any academic essay . It sets up your argument and tells the reader what to expect.

The main goals of an introduction are to:

  • Catch your reader’s attention.
  • Give background on your topic.
  • Present your thesis statement —the central point of your essay.

This introduction example is taken from our interactive essay example on the history of Braille.

The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability. The writing system of raised dots used by visually impaired people was developed by Louis Braille in nineteenth-century France. In a society that did not value disabled people in general, blindness was particularly stigmatized, and lack of access to reading and writing was a significant barrier to social participation. The idea of tactile reading was not entirely new, but existing methods based on sighted systems were difficult to learn and use. As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness. This essay begins by discussing the situation of blind people in nineteenth-century Europe. It then describes the invention of Braille and the gradual process of its acceptance within blind education. Subsequently, it explores the wide-ranging effects of this invention on blind people’s social and cultural lives.

Step 1: hook your reader, step 2: give background information, step 3: present your thesis statement, step 4: map your essay’s structure, step 5: check and revise, more examples of essay introductions, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about the essay introduction.

Your first sentence sets the tone for the whole essay, so spend some time on writing an effective hook.

Avoid long, dense sentences—start with something clear, concise and catchy that will spark your reader’s curiosity.

The hook should lead the reader into your essay, giving a sense of the topic you’re writing about and why it’s interesting. Avoid overly broad claims or plain statements of fact.

Examples: Writing a good hook

Take a look at these examples of weak hooks and learn how to improve them.

  • Braille was an extremely important invention.
  • The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability.

The first sentence is a dry fact; the second sentence is more interesting, making a bold claim about exactly  why the topic is important.

  • The internet is defined as “a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities.”
  • The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education.

Avoid using a dictionary definition as your hook, especially if it’s an obvious term that everyone knows. The improved example here is still broad, but it gives us a much clearer sense of what the essay will be about.

  • Mary Shelley’s  Frankenstein is a famous book from the nineteenth century.
  • Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is often read as a crude cautionary tale about the dangers of scientific advancement.

Instead of just stating a fact that the reader already knows, the improved hook here tells us about the mainstream interpretation of the book, implying that this essay will offer a different interpretation.

Next, give your reader the context they need to understand your topic and argument. Depending on the subject of your essay, this might include:

  • Historical, geographical, or social context
  • An outline of the debate you’re addressing
  • A summary of relevant theories or research about the topic
  • Definitions of key terms

The information here should be broad but clearly focused and relevant to your argument. Don’t give too much detail—you can mention points that you will return to later, but save your evidence and interpretation for the main body of the essay.

How much space you need for background depends on your topic and the scope of your essay. In our Braille example, we take a few sentences to introduce the topic and sketch the social context that the essay will address:

Now it’s time to narrow your focus and show exactly what you want to say about the topic. This is your thesis statement —a sentence or two that sums up your overall argument.

This is the most important part of your introduction. A  good thesis isn’t just a statement of fact, but a claim that requires evidence and explanation.

The goal is to clearly convey your own position in a debate or your central point about a topic.

Particularly in longer essays, it’s helpful to end the introduction by signposting what will be covered in each part. Keep it concise and give your reader a clear sense of the direction your argument will take.

As you research and write, your argument might change focus or direction as you learn more.

For this reason, it’s often a good idea to wait until later in the writing process before you write the introduction paragraph—it can even be the very last thing you write.

When you’ve finished writing the essay body and conclusion , you should return to the introduction and check that it matches the content of the essay.

It’s especially important to make sure your thesis statement accurately represents what you do in the essay. If your argument has gone in a different direction than planned, tweak your thesis statement to match what you actually say.

To polish your writing, you can use something like a paraphrasing tool .

You can use the checklist below to make sure your introduction does everything it’s supposed to.

Checklist: Essay introduction

My first sentence is engaging and relevant.

I have introduced the topic with necessary background information.

I have defined any important terms.

My thesis statement clearly presents my main point or argument.

Everything in the introduction is relevant to the main body of the essay.

You have a strong introduction - now make sure the rest of your essay is just as good.

  • Argumentative
  • Literary analysis

This introduction to an argumentative essay sets up the debate about the internet and education, and then clearly states the position the essay will argue for.

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts is on the rise, and its role in learning is hotly debated. For many teachers who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its critical benefits for students and educators—as a uniquely comprehensive and accessible information source; a means of exposure to and engagement with different perspectives; and a highly flexible learning environment.

This introduction to a short expository essay leads into the topic (the invention of the printing press) and states the main point the essay will explain (the effect of this invention on European society).

In many ways, the invention of the printing press marked the end of the Middle Ages. The medieval period in Europe is often remembered as a time of intellectual and political stagnation. Prior to the Renaissance, the average person had very limited access to books and was unlikely to be literate. The invention of the printing press in the 15th century allowed for much less restricted circulation of information in Europe, paving the way for the Reformation.

This introduction to a literary analysis essay , about Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein , starts by describing a simplistic popular view of the story, and then states how the author will give a more complex analysis of the text’s literary devices.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is often read as a crude cautionary tale. Arguably the first science fiction novel, its plot can be read as a warning about the dangers of scientific advancement unrestrained by ethical considerations. In this reading, and in popular culture representations of the character as a “mad scientist”, Victor Frankenstein represents the callous, arrogant ambition of modern science. However, far from providing a stable image of the character, Shelley uses shifting narrative perspectives to gradually transform our impression of Frankenstein, portraying him in an increasingly negative light as the novel goes on. While he initially appears to be a naive but sympathetic idealist, after the creature’s narrative Frankenstein begins to resemble—even in his own telling—the thoughtlessly cruel figure the creature represents him as.

Your essay introduction should include three main things, in this order:

  • An opening hook to catch the reader’s attention.
  • Relevant background information that the reader needs to know.
  • A thesis statement that presents your main point or argument.

The length of each part depends on the length and complexity of your essay .

The “hook” is the first sentence of your essay introduction . It should lead the reader into your essay, giving a sense of why it’s interesting.

To write a good hook, avoid overly broad statements or long, dense sentences. Try to start with something clear, concise and catchy that will spark your reader’s curiosity.

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . Everything else you write should relate to this key idea.

The thesis statement is essential in any academic essay or research paper for two main reasons:

  • It gives your writing direction and focus.
  • It gives the reader a concise summary of your main point.

Without a clear thesis statement, an essay can end up rambling and unfocused, leaving your reader unsure of exactly what you want to say.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The structure of the body is flexible, but you should always spend some time thinking about how you can organize your essay to best serve your ideas.

Six Effective Ways To Make Your Essay Attractive And Good- GotoAssignmentHelp

how to make essay more attractive

Essays are generally authors own point of view or an argument regarding the subject that he/she is talking about. Essays are distinguished into two categories formal and informal category. Essays written by students on various topics such as social issues, environmental matters, adapting to changes, technology up gradation and its role in our lives, how to overcome fears and deal with stress, famous monuments and their stories etc, are the common topics that school students work on and such topics come under formal essays. Topics like a review of a novel, experiencing joy, a trip to your favorite destination, learning a new skill or activity, your experience in summer camp, competing in a difficult exam, best lived moment etc, are the topics written by students for homework, school magazine, and such topics come under informal essays. Formal and informal essays are written differently.

The major difference between formal and informal essays – Using the type of language or to be the clearer choice of words, sentence framing, tense used and choice of person (first person, second person, third person) play an important role in distinguishing them.

In the case of the informal essay, the choice of words is quite simple. Jargon words are avoided. Everything is mechanically put. The essay is written in the third person and the tense used is according to your content and time period. Stick to one particular tense. Don’t shift tenses because it’s one of the most distracting things for readers to endure. Sentence structure used for writing a formal essay is simple and short -consists of a noun, a verb and naming a word. In the informal essay, the choice of words put to use are fancier and its presented in a story format. It’s written for enjoyment. The sentence structure is more of long, relaxed style, less rigid and the kind of tense put to use is again according to the content and time period. Informal essay is written in conversational style it’s as though the writer is directly speaking to the reader.

These are all the basic points used in distinguishing the format between formal and informal essay.

To make your essay worth reading be it formal or informal there are ways and methods to make them attractive and readable.

A. Collecting Information

To begin with – gather information, read books, online research, analysis of a news piece etc are some ways to gather information or collect facts for your topic. Suppose your teacher prescribes you to go to the library and have a read on your topic, it’s worthwhile because you may find something extra that will give depth, breadth and new perspective to your argument.

B. Make an Outline

Before you start writing it is important to plan how you are going to put forth your argument. This is the most important and yet the most neglected step by students. Poor structure of the sentence, unclear lines of argument, is clear signs for you to practice outlining your essay or planning.

1)  To begin with be sure of what you are going to convey in the beginning. It is always better to give an idea about the essence of your essay to the reader.

2)  Second, re-read whatever you have written. If you think that you have misplaced your ‘main point’ or if you feel some information is missing or some facts need to re-checked – organize whatever you feel can make your essay easy to read. Plan out your thoughts before you put them into a sentence. Put your thoughts in sections and link your ideas together.

3)   Next, fill the skeleton order by order. Decide what will be your conclusion because an abrupt ending is what irritates the reader.

C. Writing Style, Vocabulary, and Context

Your writing style can be anything as pink and flowery or as scientific and direct. However, to get good grades it is imperative for you to be  precise  and style-wise there are two types of wrongness, one is over- complication and vagueness. The subject on which you have written your essay has its own vocabulary and learning that is essential. The small words are small details of the essay when linked gives the entire picture of your essay so you need to know the meaning of those small words. Before you use any word, you need to know what it means and think about the context you are putting them. The meaning of the word with the context you are wanting to portrait should go rightly or else the reader would perceive a different idea of your essay. Use terms that help you contribute the development of essay and nothing of the flow is lost.

D. Punctuation and Good Grammar

Any professor or any teacher would not want to read an essay that is poorly constructed with poor grammar. Employ you sentences with good grammar, punctuation, and syntax. Precise and sophisticated sentences make the world of difference. Effective punctuation is essential to convey your arguments.

E. Tone of Voice

The tone of the voice helps in constructing a better essay. Read through your old essays if they are not absorbing and engaging then you haven’t used the right tone. Essays can be interesting if you establish a confident tone of voice and a confident voice tone assures the reader that you know what you are talking about and that they are in the safe hands.

F. Active Editing and Proofreading

Don’t submit your article without editing it. Check out for some common trouble areas in your final draft. Eliminate unnecessary words. When proofreading the spell checker will not tell the word you used is the right word. Check for commonly confused words and common errors online to help you use the correct word in your essay.

Keeping these points in mind, now, we will discuss the tips that can help you write a compelling essay.

1. Write A Captive Introduction

The first impression is the last impression. One of the most crucial tips for writing essays is to craft the introduction carefully. To make the first impression a lasting one, you have to write it in a catchy way. The reader expects to know what’s in the essay in the first few lines. So, give the reader brief information about everything presented in the essay. It can be done in various ways. The most effective practice to do so is to provide a nice hookup line in the introduction. Write something interesting. A surprising fact, or even a compelling question.

Take a look at the following example. Did you know that over 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water? Imagine what kind of mysteries and unknown wonders the oceans might be holding. Such lines provoke thoughts in the readers’ minds, and they are convinced to keep reading further to know and explore more.

The other tip for writing essays is to provide background information about the topic. For example, As our world is connecting with each passing day, understanding marine ecosystems and their importance to our planet has now become more important. If your topic is about something that is not suitable for this kind of catchy introduction line, you can simply begin with the things that you will be writing . In this essay, I am going to discuss the main factors that are affecting global warming. After writing these captive lines, just go on and discuss the important things that will be discussed in the essay. Read our blog on 7 EASY TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE CONTENT WRITING to have an in-depth understanding of the effective ways to write content.

2. Describe Your Idea with A Unique Perspective

Billions of essays have been published. Chances are there would be millions of them that have almost a similar topic as yours. To make your essay stand out, you have to describe your topic with a unique idea and perspective. Doing so is easy. You just have to think outside the box. You can follow the tips given below that can help you to describe your idea from a unique perspective. Read our blog on 6 ESSAY WRITING TIPS: HOW TO WRITE AN OUTSTANDING AND UNIQUE ESSAY to have an in-depth understanding of effective ways to write a unique essay.

  • Look for unusual angles and ideas through which you can explain your topic. Try to discuss never-explored research and arguments. For example, if your essay topic is about climate change, you should discuss how it impacts the mental health of affected communities. That is because this aspect of climate change is very less discussed.
  • Another tip for writing essays is to try interrelating different ideas to grow the audience’s interest.
  • Argue about the common facts that are believed by the majority of people that might not be worth believing in.

By including these factors while presenting your idea, you can make sure it is unique and can raise people’s interest level in your essay.

3. Keep Your Readers’ Emotions in Mind

One of the most important tips for writing essays is to resonate with the readers. By using everyday examples, you can make people nod at every argument you provide. Real-life or daily-life examples are good ways to connect with readers and engage them emotionally. For example, a kid’s feeling and fears on the first day at school is something everyone has experienced. If you state such things in proper wording, everyone will feel like you’re telling their story. They will get involved emotionally and read your essay with more engagement. Read our blog on 7 EASY TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE CONTENT WRITING to have an in-depth understanding of the effective ways to keep your readers engaged.

4. Write in a Tone That is Suitable for Your Message

Another crucial tip for writing essays is to use a tone that is suitable for your message to deliver your ideas effectively. You cannot write about summer vacation in a formal tone and expect your readers to enjoy it. Here’s an example that will explain this better. Imagine you visited Mount Rushmore and now you are writing about it. I visited Mount Rushmore last week. The monumental faces of the great leaders impressed me a lot. A cool sunny day added more fun to the visit. It was an unforgettable moment for me.

Writing the same passage in this way will make it more fun to read: During my visit to Mount Rushmore the other day, I was captivated by the extreme magnificence of the place. The sculpted faces of the great leaders got me thinking of the experiences that the sculptures might have gone through. The cool sunlight shining on the sculptures just added more beauty to the scene. It was a moment that, not only me but everyone who visits the site, cannot forget.

The scenario goes vice versa, also. You cannot write about a formal topic in a funny tone. This is the thing that you have to master if you want to write compelling essays. You have to find the right tone and words to describe what you are talking about. Of course, this can be done manually by adjusting the words and tone of the essay. But if you find it difficult to do, you can take the help of an online article rewriter tool. These tools are built on NLP technology which is a branch of Artificial Intelligence. These tools can understand the context and generate a better version of the given text with a better choice of words. And the good thing is, this all will be done in just a few seconds. Read our blog on THE MOST RESOURCEFUL CONTENT WRITING TOOLS AVAILABLE ONLINE to have an in-depth understanding of the effective online tools to write compelling articles.

That’s pretty much it. Writing a compelling essay is an art. That is because making the readers understand and agree with your opinion is not easy. Especially when your audience is diverse. By following the tips for writing essays explained above, you can make sure that you have made your essay compelling and can now be effective for your readers.

5 Tips to Making Your Writing More Exciting

5 Tips to making

What makes good writing?

Accuracy. Clarity. Brevity.

Perhaps you enjoy writing or perhaps you find it sort of painful. Regardless, all of us have to write  something  on a daily basis, whether it’s an email, proposal, presentation, article, and just about anything else.

However, the focus shouldn’t be on whether you  want  to write; it should be on your message. If you want your message to resonate, you’ll want to find ways to make your writing more appealing, interesting, and informative. The best way to do this is to pay attention to your word choice.

Here are 5 practical tips you can apply right away.

1. Choose active voice and vivid verbs . Passive voice, or leaving the subject out of the sentence, makes it look like you are trying to avoid responsibility. For example, instead of “the ball was thrown,” write “he threw the ball.” Whenever possible, avoid the “to be” verb (is, are, am, was, were). Instead of saying “he was running the meeting with an iron fist,” say “he ran the meeting with an iron fist.” Instead of “Bill is a great employee,” try “Bill works exceptionally well on a team.”

2.Choose precise words.  All writing is made up of words.  Doh!  you may say,  of course it is . To keep your writing short and to the point, use specific words. For example, rather than “several people,” use “three people.” Did you notice the title of this article? Instead of just saying “Tips to Make Your Writing More Exciting,” we’ve said, “5 Tips ….” Using numbers draws attention and gives the reader a “specific” path to follow.

3.Choose concise phrasing . Instead of “don't have the resources,” use “lack the resources.”  Change “in view of the fact that” to “because.” Rather than “at the conclusion of the meeting,” write “following the meeting.” Shorter phrases make your writing easier to read and more interesting; longer phrases, while technically accurate, muddy up your writing.

4.Choose simple words.  Trying to impress people with big words and complex sentences leads to ineffective writing.  Avoid words like “utilize” rather than “use,” “ascertain” rather than “find out.” Exciting writing is focused and simple.

5.Choose appropriate words.  If you write a technical piece for a publication, client, or colleague, you may choose to use jargon, acronyms, and industry-speak the intended audience naturally understands. When writing a note to a roommate or friend, you may choose to use slang or ultra-casual language. Either way, the reader needs to intuitively understand your point without asking questions or using Wikipedia to figure out what you’re trying to say.

The best way to improve your writing, whether you like to write or not, is to pay attention! While that may sound overly simple, it’s true. Spend time reading and reviewing your work, even if it’s a simple email. Make sure you’ve used clear and concise words, and that you’ve stopped writing when you’ve made your point.

Word choice can showcase your knowledge and education … or make you look juvenile and amateur. As Mark Twain said:  The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.

Better writing equals better communication. Good luck!

12 ways to make yourself look and feel more attractive, according to science

  • If you're feeling down about your appearance, you can make simple changes that have nothing to do with weight loss.
  • Research suggests being kind to others and having sex can boost how you feel about your looks.
  • Experts also suggest embracing humor and fixing your posture can also help with confidence.

Insider Today

Most people will admit that they don't feel 100% at all times. Even the most beautiful and successful people have off days, but if you're feeling bad about yourself more than you feel good, you might need a shift in perspective.

Despite common thinking, feeling more attractive and desirable may have little to do with your outward appearance.

We consulted scientific studies and spoke to relationship and dating experts to find  simple lifestyle changes that you can make to appear more attractive both to yourself and others.

These tips can help you begin to see yourself in a more positive light.

Get your sweat on.

You might dread exercise but it can play a big factor in helping yourself feel more attractive.

We're not just talking about exercise's effect on your body physically — exercise is a great way to take some time to get out your aggression, have some time for yourself, and release endorphins, a chemical that can improve your mood. A 2015 study by the University of Turku found that people who exercised reported an increase in confidence .

"Exercise is a great way to feel more attractive," April Masini , a relationship and etiquette expert, told INSIDER. "Not only are you giving yourself a gift of fitness, but you’re releasing endorphins and balancing work, play and self-care."

Give some compliments.

how to make essay more attractive

Getting some love from others might seem like the easiest way to boost your self image, but actually you might want to practice giving some love first.

Talking up good traits about others will help you seem more appealing in their eyes and make you realize the good things about yourself, too. Researchers at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China suggested in a 2016 study  that men who used metaphors to compliment women were found to be more attractive.

"Learning how to properly compliment may just be the key to a second date," matchmaker Denise Levy told INSIDER. "Making other people feel good about themselves increases your attractiveness. People put effort into getting ready for a date so take the time to compliment the other person and mean it!"

Put a smile on.

It's no secret that smiling makes you seem warm and inviting to other people, which can help how they see you. But it turns out you may even get the same benefits by looking in a mirror and smiling at yourself.

"As social creatures, we are programmed to notice the body language of others and scan for cues of safety and welcome," relationship therapist, educator, and author Shadeen Francis told INSIDER. "Smiling is a universal signal for warmth, approachability, and attractiveness."

"But this also works for yourself; if you smile at yourself in the mirror, you receive very similar neural cues as you would if a familiar friend smiled at you," she said.

Researchers at the University of Cardiff in Wales in 2009 studied how facial expressions  can affect a person's mood and found evidence that suggests people who smile more can actually feel happier.

Give yourself a pep talk.

how to make essay more attractive

It's always nice when someone close to you notices or points out a good quality, but you don't have to wait around for that extra boost.

It may seem silly, but repeating positive affirmations to yourself in the mirror or saying things that you like about yourself will help you validate those traits and value them in yourself.

"Attention is an exercise in intentional focus," Francis said. "Whatever you give attention to will expand in your field of consciousness. Taking time to actively notice positive qualities about yourself, whether external characteristics or internal skills and qualities, helps them become more salient to you. When you spend time acknowledging these traits, you can experience them more fully."

A 2014 study from the University of Illinois  published in the "European Journal of Social Psychology" suggested that people who talked to themselves had higher job success and confidence. Experiments showed that when people talked to themselves — in the same way that they would speak to a friend — it hyped them up. The study also showed that people injected more energy into saying the word "you" when referring to themselves.

Don't self-sabotage.

how to make essay more attractive

A study from the National Institutes of Health found that people who dwelled on negative aspects  about themselves actually had a higher risk of self-doubt and may have a lower-rate of self-satisfaction.

If you find yourself making negative statements about yourself, you need to pay close attention to why. These types of statements can make you feel worse about yourself and take a toll on your self-image.

Psychologist Jodi De Luca  recommends that people identify what is causing them to make these statements and eliminate the cause if they can.

"In particular, pay special attention to what triggers self-sabotaging statements," she told INSIDER. "Is it a particular environment? Person? Situation? Once you identify the triggers of negative self-talk, you have a better chance of catching yourself, turning negative self-statements into positive ones, and even preventing them."

Avoid making judgmental comments.

how to make essay more attractive

Similar to negative self-talk, speaking and thinking poorly of others can decrease your overall confidence, experts say.

When we judge others , it often comes from a place of seeking safety when we can't know everything about someone else, according to Elizabeth Dorrance Hall, an assistant professor of communication at Michigan State University.

But being overly judgmental can increase feelings of anxiety and depression and actually make us feel worse about ourselves overall, according to a February 2019 study in the journal Personality and Individual Differences.

That's why Dorrance Hall suggested getting in the practice of giving people the benefit of the doubt when you feel like hopping into judgment mode.

Assess your relationships with others.

The weight of a toxic person in your life may be preventing you from feeling your best.

A 2015 study in "The Journal of Ethics and Education"  surveyed people who had a relationship in their life that exhibited traits of "estrangement, change, mistaken friendship, and false friendship." The study found that they often didn't realize that others were dragging them down and saw toxic people through "rose-colored glasses," which can take a toll on their mental health.

If there are people who are constantly putting you down, being rude to you, or are just bad influences on your self-esteem, do your best to cut those people out of your life or spend less time with them.

More importantly, prioritize the people who spend their time supporting you and building you up. This can instantly boost your confidence, De Luca said.

Have a sense of humor.

how to make essay more attractive

Laughing and joking can make you more at ease, so if you try and laugh off a small thing that would normally get under your skin, you can take some pressure off of yourself, which can make you see yourself in a positive light.

"This is so important — some people treat every aspect of their life so seriously and this shows in their face and in their personality," Alex Reddle , online dating specialist, told INSIDER. "It is perfectly okay to be imperfect — no one has to be perfect all of the time. It is important not to let others define you and to just be you."

Cracking a joke can help others see you as more attractive, too.

A 2015 study by the University of Kansas found that laughing together can increase attraction in couples. In the study, 51 pairs of people who didn't know each other talked; the more times a man tried to be funny and the more times a woman laughed at his jokes, the more likely she was romantically interested in him.

Additionally, the more the pair laughed together, the higher level of attraction they reported.

Having sex is a great, fun, and pretty easy way to boost your self-image.

People who had casual sex with a supportive partner were found to show an increase in confidence and self-image, according to a 2014 study from the "Journal of Social Psychological and Personality Science."

Plus, the pheromones you release during and after sex can automatically draw people to you , making you more attractive to them too, according to research conducted by San Francisco State University.

Fake it until you make it.

how to make essay more attractive

The easiest way to make yourself feel confident? Act like you already are.

When you challenge yourself to feel good about yourself, it will show and others will take notice.

"The way you enter a room or share a glance are indicators of your confidence working for you or against you," Levy said. "It is all about your smile, body language and even eye contact. When you feel odd or awkward people can pick up on that uneasiness which will equate to whether or not you are perceived as attractive."

Need some inspiration? A 2013 study published  in the "Journal of Experimental Social Psychology"  found that simply recalling a moment when you were confident can increase levels of self-confidence.

Rock some red.

how to make essay more attractive

Having a wardrobe that makes you feel confident is a huge step in driving up how you see yourself, but feeling better about your appearance may be as simple as wearing a different color.

A study from the University of Rochester suggests  that wearing red can automatically make women more attractive to men. They were more likely in the study to ask out a woman wearing a red shirt than one in green.

Jen Thoden, founder of the personal style site  Your Color Style , told INSIDER that red "represents passion, power and sensuality." She recommends rocking red to be taken more seriously and to get a rush of empowerment for yourself.

Stand up straight and tall.

how to make essay more attractive

Having good posture can make you look good, but it can also make you feel good.

One study from the Association of Psychological Science found that sitting up straight can make you feel more confident and powerful. They found that people who strike "power poses" reported  elevations in testosterone, decreases in cortisol (a chemical found when you experience fear), and increased feelings of power.

So, if you're looking for a mood boost and to view yourself in a more positive light, it might be worth keeping your chin up both physically and mentally.

How to Make Yourself More Attractive

Understanding the laws of attraction..

Posted October 3, 2020 | Reviewed by Gary Drevitch

Psychology has studied the laws of attraction for at least half a century, and some of the findings might surprise you. We often think that how attractive we are is just about physical appearance. We assume that we’re either a good-looking person or we aren’t. We assume that we are doomed to be found unattractive if we had the bad luck to strike out in the looks department. Psychological research lends some support to that depressing reality.

Despite some cross-cultural variability, there do seem to be certain physical attributes that are considered attractive around the world. Youth, good health, and symmetry are universally found to be attractive. In women, the hour-glass shape is considered attractively feminine, and in men, the upper torso looking like an inverted triangle is considered attractively masculine. Babies prefer to look at the same faces that adults think are attractive. Psychology has also found that there is a positive bias towards good-looking people. We think the best of them, though it may be unwarranted.

But psychology has also found that attraction is not all about looks. Personalities can be attractive or unattractive. Higher social status is generally more attractive than lower. We are generally more attracted to people who we live in proximity to us and who become familiar to us. We are generally more attracted to people who like us. And we are generally more attracted to people who are similar to us. The good news, then, is that we can compensate for deficiencies in the looks department by improving our personalities, by increasing our social status, by becoming familiar to people we want to like us, by showing our liking in the hopes of reciprocity, and by seeking out people who are more similar than different to us.

What’s an Attractive Personality?

Research has found that we prefer one personality type for casual sexual relations but another type for serious long-term romantic relationships . For more casual relations, we prefer people who are more outgoing , lively, and confident. Narcissists who make good first impressions but become less attractive the better you get to know them often win in this department. But for serious long-term relationships, we want someone who is warm, caring, dependable, trustworthy, and devoted. We might not be so good at winning popularity contests if we are not good-looking or the life of the party. But we can be quite successful in attracting a high-quality long-term partner if we cultivate the side of our personalities that is warm, caring, dependable, trustworthy, and devoted. Intelligence and a good sense of humor also add to the attractiveness of our personalities for either short or long-term relationships.

The Attraction to Resources

Professional success is attractive. Our education , and the more money we make, can make us more attractive. A hardworking, ambitious, and conscientious person is going to be more attractive than a lazy and inconsiderate person. Especially in a long-term relationship, we are attracted to people who can help provide us and our future children with a good life. In a time when dual-income families are the norm, this is just as true for men as for women. It seems that unsuccessful men are especially unattractive to women; this is a frequent reason for women divorcing such men.

How to Grow on Someone

Yes, first impressions count for a lot and tend to bias our later impressions of people. It is important to make a good first impression . Nevertheless, people can grow on each other if they spend enough time around each other and become sufficiently familiar. As someone gets to know the real you even if you didn’t make the best first impression, feelings of attraction can increase over time. That assumes that the real you, that is your real personality, your real social status, your heartfelt appreciation of your partner, and your real similarities are eventually appreciated. That also assumes that the target of your desires can overcome their bias based on first impressions. Some people won’t give you a second look if they don’t feel a strong sexual chemistry based on first impressions.

Don’t Play Hard to Get

One law of attraction is that we like people who like us. That doesn’t mean we should seem too easy as though we have to ingratiate ourselves with or flatter every person we meet. What we like is to be liked by people who are selective in their likings. We want to be liked by people who don’t like everybody but have the discernment to like us. That’s what flatters our egos. So, if you meet someone you really like, it’s better to show it than play hard to get and it’s best to seem like you’re not a person who likes everyone indiscriminately or just uses flattery on everybody to get to first base. You have to seem like you are a genuinely selective person in your likings for people to feel special.

Why Opposites Don’t Attract

Psychology has discovered that birds of a feather flock together. We want to be with someone who likes us and who shares our outlook, values, and life goals . We don’t want to settle for someone beneath us. Though we’d like someone out of our league despite worries we won’t be good enough, we like being with someone who is our equal. That makes us feel safe and secure. So, if you want to find people who will think you’re attractive, go out and find someone who is your equal and who is similar to you. Differences become sources of conflict in long-term relationships and sometimes when the differences get too large, they become deal-breakers.

Conclusion: We can always become a more attractive version of ourselves. We can stay fit and healthy. We can work to become warmer, more dependable, and more conscientious. We can give people time to get to know us so that we can grow on them while showing how much we like them—even though that might make us feel vulnerable to rejection. And finally, we can seek people who are our equal and similar to us who are more likely to perceive us as a kindred spirit. The differences won’t be dealbreakers in a long-term relationship. So, however unattractive you feel, there are lots of things you can do to make yourself a more attractive person.

12 Science-Backed Tricks That Will Make You More Attractive and Help You Make a Good First Impression

Shana Lebowitz

Shana Lebowitz , Allana Akhtar and Caroline Hroncich

how to make essay more attractive

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and if you’re looking to land a first date, or just spend some time with a significant other, there are a few steps that experts suggest you take to make yourself appear more attractive.

But it’s about more than just your physical appearance. Attractiveness is impacted by the way you carry yourself, the folks you hang out with, and how you talk to people — plus a whole lot more.

Here are 12 science-backed strategies for appearing more attractive.

Yu Han contributed to a previous version of this article.

Make ’em laugh. Women are more attracted to men with a sense of humor.

In one study, men were more successful at getting women’s numbers when they had recently told a joke to a group of friends.

In that study , a psychologist asked three men to tell (or not tell) a funny joke to their friends at a bar while a woman sat at a nearby table. Then those men were instructed to approach the woman and ask for her number. After the man had left, an experimenter approached the woman and asked her to rate the man on attractiveness and intelligence and to indicate how much she would want to date the man long-term.

Results showed that the guys who told jokes were three times as likely to get the woman’s number as the men who didn’t. They were also rated more attractive and intelligent.

“The effect of a great sense of humor on women’s attractions might be partially explained by the fact that funny people are considered to be more social and more intelligent, things that women seek in a mate,”  anthropologist Gil Greengross writes .

Surround yourself with friends. People look better when they’re in a group.

In one experiment featured in  a 2013 study by researchers at the University of California-San Diego , 25 male and female undergrads looked at 300 photos of women’s faces — once in a group photo and once in an isolated portrait. Another experiment repeated the same procedure with 18 undergrads looking at photos of men’s faces. Results showed that participants rated both men and women significantly more attractive when they were pictured in a group. They call this the “ cheerleader effect .”

“Having a few wingmen or wingwomen may indeed be a good dating strategy, particularly if their facial features complement and average out one’s unattractive idiosyncrasies,” study authors Drew Walker and Edward Vul write.

Skip the small talk. People who ask deep questions feel more connected than people who talk about superficial topics.

In a 1997 study , State University of New York psychologist Arthur Aron and colleagues separated two groups of undergrads and paired them off, giving each duo 45 minutes to answer a set of questions.

One question set was small talk, and the other was increasingly probing. The people who asked deeper questions felt more connected. Two people who participated in the study even  fell in love  months later, which is an intriguing — though probably insignificant — result.

Be a leader.

For one study , researchers recruited 49 Wisconsin legislative aides to rate the attractiveness of different politicians. Sure enough, participants rated the leaders as more attractive if they aligned with their political commitments (Republican or Democrat).

“In contrast with research traditions that treat physical attractiveness as a static trait, our findings highlight the importance of group membership as a lens for perceiving familiar leaders’ physical attractiveness,” concluded lead author Kevin Kniffin and his colleagues.

Put on a happy face. Science says a cheerful facial expression may compensate for relative unattractiveness.

In  two experiments , researchers in Switzerland examined the relationship between attractiveness and smiling.

They found that the stronger the smile, the more attractive a face looked.

Get a pet. Being a dog owner may signal that a man is nurturing and capable of making long-term commitments. It can also make someone appear more approachable.

In a 2014  experiment , 100 Israeli women read vignettes about men. Some of the men were described as “cads”: they would cheat on their partner and get into fights. The other men were described as stereotypical “dads”: they would work hard at their job and take good care of their kids.

Whenever the story featured a cad who owned a dog, women rated that man as a more suitable long-term partner than a cad who didn’t own a dog. Cads with dogs were even rated slightly more attractive than dads with dogs.

Be nice. When people hear about how nice somebody is, they find the person’s face more attractive.

In one 2014 study , 60 men and 60 women looked at 845 photos of other people in their 20s, all displaying neutral expressions. Some of those photos were accompanied by the Chinese words for “decent” and honest”; the others were accompanied by the Chinese words for “evil” and “mean”; still others weren’t accompanied by any personality information.

Participants ended up rating people more attractive when they were described as nice than when they were described as mean or when there was no additional information about them.

“Personality characteristics may be linked to facial attractiveness, such that positive personality characteristics can promote facial attractiveness, whereas negative personality characteristics can reduce facial attractiveness,” write authors Yan Zhang, Fanchang Kong, Yanli Zhong, and Hui Kou.

Live in a luxe apartment.

In one  small study by researchers at Cardiff Metropolitan University , a man was photographed with a casual posture in a “high-status” luxury apartment and a “neutral-status” standard apartment context.

The men who appeared to be “high-status” received higher attractiveness rating from a group of 35 female undergrads.

Show off some musical skills. Playing good music can make men more attractive to women.

In a 2014 study , researchers asked about 1,500 women (with an average age of 28) to listen to simple and complex pieces of music and rate the attractiveness of the composer.

The results showed that women preferred the more complex music during “peak conception times,” and the women said they would choose the composer of the more complex music as a long-term partner.

Cultivate mindfulness. Women find mindful men more attractive due to their increased attentiveness.

In 2015, Australian researchers  studied  undergrads participating in a speed-dating session, and found that mindful men tended to receive higher attractiveness ratings from women.

Before the session began, 91 students were asked to fill out a mindfulness questionnaire, in which they indicated how much they agreed with statements like, “I perceive my feelings and emotions without having to react to them.”

After each interaction with an opposite-sex partner, students privately indicated how “sexy” they found their partner and how much they’d like to date that person.

Results showed that men were generally more drawn to physically attractive women. (Independent coders had rated the students’ attractiveness beforehand.) But women were generally more attracted to mindful men.

The researchers suggest that mindful men may have been more attentive to partners during the brief interactions and may have done a better job at regulating their anxiety, which in turn made them more attractive.

Participate in an extreme sport, like deep-sea scuba diving or mountain biking.

A 2014 study  led by researchers at the University of Alaska at Anchorage found that women are attracted to men who take what the researchers call “hunter-gatherer risks.”

The researchers had 233 undergrads fill out questionnaires about how attractive they would find a partner who engaged in certain risky behaviors.

Hunter-gatherer risks included mountain biking, deep-sea scuba diving, and extreme rollerblading. “Modern” risks included plagiarizing an academic paper, casually handling chemicals in a lab, and not updating the virus-protection software on your computer.

Results showed that women said they would be more attracted to men who engaged in hunter-gatherer risks — the kinds that were similar to risks faced by ancestral humans. Women said they would be less attracted to men who engaged in modern risks, probably because those risks seem just plain dumb.

University of Rochester  researchers found  that women who wear red may be more attractive to men.

The study featured a series of experiments, in which groups of about 30 male undergrads looked at black-and-white headshots of a young woman standing against either a red, white, gray, green, or blue background.

Results showed that the men perceived women standing in front of a red background as more physically attractive and more sexually attractive. They were also more likely to want to date them.

Interestingly, when men were asked to indicate what factored into their attractiveness rating, few mentioned the background color, suggesting that the preference for red is subconscious.

Estimated Reading Time: 7 Minutes The Ultimate Guide On How To Be More Attractive & Why It Matters

“The inner speech, your thoughts, can cause you to be rich or poor, loved or unloved, happy or unhappy, attractive or unattractive, powerful or weak.” Ralph Charell

Table of Contents

Learning how to be more attractive can be useful because attractive people are perceived more positively than less attractive people. We can try to convince ourselves that looks don’t matter, but that’s simply wishful thinking.

This phenomenon has been extensively studied by researchers for many years. Whether you acknowledge it or not, society is significantly impacted by looks.

From first impressions to everyday interactions, how someone appears affects how they are perceived. Although it may seem unfair, this is the hard truth of today’s society.

It’s worthwhile to think about how to be more attractive if you want to enhance your personal or professional relationships.

Attractiveness is a complex blend of physical, emotional, and behavioral traits that draw people towards one another.

The concept of attractiveness is subjective and varies from person to person. But there are certain universally appealing qualities that can enhance one’s attractiveness.

Let’s break it down and find out how you can be more attractive.

Why Attractiveness Matters

People tend to judge a book by its cover. Hence, how you look has an impact on how others perceive you. This can have a major impact on both your personal and professional lives.

According to scientific research, those who are deemed attractive are more likely to be hired and regarded as trustworthy. Attractive people also have an easier time getting job interviews or promotions.

This is consistent with the comment made by Harvard professor Dr. Alvin F. Poussaint that:

“People tend to think that those who have attractive looks are more trustworthy or honest than people who are not attractive.”

In social settings, attractive people often have an advantage. People are naturally attracted to good-looking people, and they tend to receive more attention, opportunities, and positive feedback.

Beautiful-girl-how-to-be-more-attractive

In a study at Chapman University, California, Dr. David Frederick, one of the co-researchers, made a noteworthy observation :

“We found that although men have stronger preferences for a ‘good looking’ and ‘slender’ partner, men and women care equally about having a partner who is specifically attractive to them.”

According to this study, physical appearance can play a significant role in the game of romance and relationships . When you are comfortable with who you are, you radiate positive energy and attract more positive interactions.

So ask yourself: How can you be more attractive and use it to your advantage?

Section 1: Cultivating Inner Attractiveness

Think of the people you have met who don’t fit into society’s narrow standards of beauty yet exude an undeniable attraction. They possess an authenticity that captivates you and leaves a lasting impression .

1. Authenticity

This is the key: authenticity.

Many of us fall into the trap of trying to fit into a predefined mold of what society considers attractive. We accept the notion that to be attractive, we must act, think, and even look a certain way.

But the truth is, when you try to be someone you’re not, you sacrifice the very essence of what makes you attractive. It’s like wearing a mask, and people can sense it.

Real attractiveness comes when you boldly embrace who you are , with all your shortcomings and weaknesses. When you stand confidently in your truth, people can’t help but be drawn to your magnetic energy.

Authenticity is liberating. It allows you to form genuine connections with others based on mutual respect and understanding.

2. Confidence And Charisma

True self-confidence comes from knowing yourself, accepting your strengths and weaknesses, and feeling comfortable in your own skin.

Self-confidence starts with how you perceive yourself. It’s about cultivating a healthy self-esteem that radiates from within.

Attractiveness isn’t just about how you look on the outside; it’s also about how you feel on the inside. When you truly value and respect yourself , others can’t help but pick up on that energy.

And what about charisma—that elusive charm that captivates others? In a 2018 study , researchers found that charisma is made up of the endearing qualities of influence and likeability.

confident-man-how-to-be-more-attractive

When charismatic individuals enter a room, their magnetic presence effortlessly draws others in. But charisma can’t be faked.

It’s not about pretending; it’s about being authentic, showing a genuine smile, and making meaningful eye contact. The key is to become the best version of yourself—one that is self-assured, genuine, and truly connected with others.

However, developing confidence and charisma is not an overnight transformation. With time, patience, and dedication , your confidence and charisma will blossom.

3. Positive Mindset

Optimism and a positive outlook are attributes that can significantly affect your attractiveness. Having a positive perspective is attractive as it reflects resilience, strength, and an enjoyable personality.

A positive mindset breeds confidence. Here are three ways to nurture a positive mindset:

I. Gratitude

When you cherish life’s small moments, you enrich your own experience and emit a positivity that captivates others. Gratitude is like a glow-up for your attractiveness.

By focusing on what’s going right instead of dwelling on the negatives, you become a source of inspiration. It’s a reminder that there’s beauty in even the simplest aspects of life.

In a world where cynicism can be prevalent, your ability to embody gratitude elevates the spirits of everyone you encounter. People are naturally drawn to that positive energy.

II. Mindfulness

Being present and fully engaged in the moment is incredibly attractive. When you’re genuinely attentive to others and listen with your heart, people take notice.

It shows that you value them and their presence.

III. Vision and Ambition

Having a clear vision and ambitious goals is incredibly attractive. It shows that you have direction and purpose in life .

When you’re passionate about your dreams and actively working towards them, you become magnetic.

And when you’re pursuing your passions, you’re doing more than just filling your own cup. It fills you with a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

4. Personal Development

Picture this: you’re evolving into the best version of yourself , one step at a time. It’s like you’re a living testament to personal growth, a force that has this irresistible pull on those around you.

two-people-in-conversation-attraction

When you actively seek to improve yourself, you wield a charm that’s irresistible . Cultivate an unyielding passion for learning and embrace the unquenchable thirst for knowledge.

These are qualities that set you apart.

Cultivating inner attractiveness is not about fitting into a mold or adhering to societal expectations. It’s about unleashing the authentic, confident, kind, and humor-filled version of yourself.

Section 2: Building Social Skills

While inner qualities lay the foundation, the way you interact with others can either enhance or hinder your overall appeal. Mastering your social skills is like gearing up for a journey towards success and heightened attractiveness.

Having effective conversations, leaving a positive impression, and having interesting conversations are all examples of social skills.

1. Effective Communication

The art of effective communication is like a secret weapon for attractiveness. It’s not just about what you say; it’s how you say it that can make all the difference.

Being a good conversationalist is an art in itself. You need to listen actively, ask thoughtful questions, and show that you’re genuinely interested in what others have to say.

Enhancing verbal communication is the first step. Speaking with clarity and confidence is key. When you’re able to express yourself clearly and assertively, that’s when you’ll command attention and respect.

But it’s not just about the words; non-verbal communication cues are equally crucial. One of the most powerful non-verbal cues is eye contact.

The other one is body language. Standing tall, using open gestures, and mirroring the other person’s body language can create a sense of rapport and understanding.

2. Emotional Intelligence

To truly boost your attractiveness, there’s a crucial factor that often gets overlooked: emotional intelligence (EQ). When you’re able to understand and manage your emotions effectively , that that will raise your level of attractiveness.

EQ starts with being in tune with your feelings and recognizing them for what they are. Don’t let your emotions dictate your actions; instead, take a moment to pause and reflect before reacting impulsively.

Ask yourself why you feel a certain way and consider how it might influence your behavior. This level of self-awareness isn’t just attractive; it’s genuinely empowering.

But EQ isn’t just about looking inward; it’s also about understanding others. Imagine stepping into someone else’s world and truly feeling what they’re going through.

That kind of genuine empathy and compassion is like a magnetic force that draws people towards you.

3. Social Skills

Your capacity for interpersonal interaction and genuine connections with people can increase your allure. I’m referring to connections that strike a deep chord in the hearts of those you encounter.

People-working-together-as-team

Creating meaningful connections is like finding gold in the realm of attractiveness. Expanding your social circles and networking can open doors you never thought possible.

But it’s not just about having a thousand acquaintances; it’s about forming deep, authentic bonds with others. People are naturally drawn to those who make them feel valued and understood.

The art of creating and maintaining relationships is an acquired skill. In a healthy relationship, you support friends in need, be an encouraging partner, and be a coworker who encourages teamwork.

Always bear in mind that attractiveness isn’t just about how you look; it’s about how you make others feel.

We’ve explored the social factors of how to be more attractive. Now it’s time to look at how physical appearance plays a significant role.

The Impact of Physical Appearance

Even though physical appearance matters, attractiveness comes from being comfortable in your own skin.

Fortunately, you don’t need to be a flawless supermodel to be attractive. Because being appealing is all about presenting yourself in a way that exudes confidence and professionalism.

So, let’s dive into three crucial aspects of physical attractiveness:

1. Grooming and Personal Care

No one likes to be with someone who looks like they just got out of bed (unless that’s your typical style). How you’re perceived by others and how they perceive you is greatly influenced by your physical appearance .

Therefore, pay attention to your personal hygiene and dress with confidence. Basic grooming and personal hygiene show that you respect yourself and the people you interact with.

Shower regularly, keep your hair clean and neat, and don’t forget to trim your nails. Always remember that the devil is in the details.

2. Dressing for Success

Dressing well isn’t about following the latest fashion trends. It’s not just about looking good; it’s about feeling comfortable and confident.

So stick to a style that suits your personality and unique body type. Always remember that confidence is the best accessory.

Man-in-tailor-made-suit

Wear your outfit with pride, and you’ll instantly boost your attractiveness.

3. Physical Fitness

Believe it or not, there is a direct correlation between attractiveness and health. Exercise produces endorphins that increase vitality and self-confidence and keep your body healthy and toned.

Whether you’re at the gym, jogging or practicing yoga , exercise boosts our attractiveness from the inside out.

But here’s the kicker: staying in shape isn’t the whole story. Without enough sleep and relaxation, your fitness journey will fall by the wayside.

After all, the sleep thing isn’t just about preventing zombie-like dark circles. It’s also about waking up as the freshest version of yourself, with skin that’s in full swing.

And don’t even get me started on the magic of eating well . A healthy diet isn’t just about the numbers on the scale, it’s about boosting your natural beauty from the inside out.

So adopt a diet that that provides your body with nutrients and brings out your natural attractiveness.

The Final Word On How To Be More Attractive

Remember, being attractive isn’t about transforming into a Hollywood poster model or adhering to some cookie-cutter standard of beauty. Learning how to be more attractive is merely about cultivating a magnetic energy that draws people in.

An energy that emanates from your authenticity, passion for learning, kindness, sense of humor, and pursuit of personal growth.

Because being attractive isn’t just about your physical appearance; it’s about how you present yourself. It’s about embracing your uniqueness, quirks and all, and radiating the confidence that comes from within.

how to make essay more attractive

How to make yourself more attractive, according to science

In a world of failed first dates , we can often find ourselves wondering what we can do to seem more attractive .

We aren’t talking about physically – after all, looks are just a small part of what makes someone hot. We’re talking about how you behave, the words you say and the body language you display.

There’s one quality that psychotherapists say is the key to making someone fancy you.

The trait? Self-assurance.

Are we saying it’s fool proof? No. There’s always a chance that even when you’re your best self, you’re still not someone’s cup of tea – but that’s their loss.

Even so, if you display self-assurance on a date, it’s more likely your love interest is going to think you’re hot stuff.

Relational psychotherapist Claire Law tells Metro.co.uk: ‘In a relationship sense, self-assurance is a green flag that screams: “Hey, I know who I am. I’m comfortable in my own skin.”

‘Who wouldn’t want a partner like that? Someone who’s not constantly seeking validation or approval. A self-assured partner won’t be clingy or needy – they’ll have their own thing going on, which is really sexy.’

Self-assurance is also attractive because it hints at other positive qualities people look for in relationships.

‘These other qualities are emotional maturity, stability, and resilience,’ says Claire.

‘If you’re self-assured, you’re probably pretty good at managing your emotions, coping with stress and making decisions. These are all things that make for a solid, healthy relationship.’

It’s all well and good saying you should be self-assured but, if you’re not sure where to start, we’ve got you covered.

‘Self-assurance is such an attractive quality because it telegraphs a certain attitude to the world. Self-assured people tend to be more at peace with themselves… they’ve made their peace with their strengths and weaknesses,’ says Claire.

So, what are some specific self-assured behaviours on a date?

Picture this: you’ve just walked into the bar where your first date is and you’ve given your date a hug or a polite kiss on the cheek.

The first thing to make sure you focus on is confident body language.

‘Stand tall, make eye contact, smile warmly. Don’t fidget or cross your arms – that makes you look closed off and nervous,’ explains Claire.

A 2010 study in the journal of Psychological Science found that ‘power posing’ caused behavioural changes for both men and women.

By taking up a self-assured and confident stance participants were found to instantly become ‘more powerful’ – translating into ‘real-world, actionable implications’.

As well as non-verbal cues, there are other things you can do to seem self-assured.

‘Engage in balanced conversation. Ask your date questions, but also share about yourself. A self-assured person isn’t afraid to open up,’ Claire says.

While some of us can be shy about sharing our thoughts on a certain topic, because we’re afraid someone will disagree, giving your perspective on an issue is sexy.

‘Be decisive,’ Claire adds. ‘If your date asks for your opinion on something, give it. Don’t hem and haw or say “I don’t know, what do you think?” all the time.

‘Be willing to respectfully disagree. If you have a different opinion, voice it calmly and confidently. A self-assured person can handle a little friendly debate.

‘Order what you want, not what you think your date wants you to order. Speak up if you’re uncomfortable.’

While it’s nice to be validated by someone we’re attracted to, Claire says, it’s important we don’t seek constant reassurance.

‘A self-assured person doesn’t need their date to validate them at every turn. They’re not fishing for compliments,’ she adds.

If you do all these things, it’s likely the date has gone well – although always be receptive to feedback if you don’t get the desired response from them.

Lastly, Claire says: ‘End the date with clear communication. If you want to see them again, say so. If not, politely say you don’t feel a connection. Self-assured people are direct.’

If you’re implementing these tips on your next date, just remember that there’s a difference between self-assurance and being big-headed.

‘It’s about being true to yourself and communicating that authentically. Self-assurance isn’t about putting on an act or being arrogant,’ Claire says.

‘It’s about knowing your worth and embodying that in how you carry yourself and interact with others. And in the the wild world of dating, that kind of quiet confidence is incredibly appealing.’

What makes a person beautiful has fascinated artists and scientists for centuries. Beauty is not, as it is often assumed to be, “in the eye of the beholder” – but follows certain predictable rules. Symmetry and proportions play a role, and though culture and norms shape our perception of beauty, researchers observe a consistently striking agreement among people on whom they regard as beautiful.

Not surprisingly the beauty market has been on a steady rise (besides a minor 2020 Covid slump), reaching $430 billion in revenue in 2023, according to a recent McKinsey report . The fascination for the perfect makeup or skincare is fired up by the impact of perfect faces displayed on social media and enhanced by image processing and filters. But is all this money well spent?

Pretty privilege

The short answer is: yes. In today’s fiercely competitive job market, the economic advantages of beauty are undeniable. Numerous studies have shown that attractive individuals benefit from a beauty bonus and earn higher salaries on average. Certain high-paying professions are built around beauty (such as show business) but what is more surprising is that for almost any kind of employment, beauty can lead to a positive halo effect. Beautiful individuals are consistently expected to be more intelligent and thought to be better leaders , which influences career trajectories and opportunities.

It is thought individuals perceived as beautiful are also more likely to benefit from people’s trust , which makes it easier for them to get promoted or to strike business deals. The idea is that individuals who look better are thought to be healthier or/and to have had more positive social interactions in their past, which might influence their trustworthiness.

Does being attractive make you more trustworthy?

But does that theory hold water? In our recent paper Adam Zylbersztejn, Zakaria Babutsidze, Nobuyuki Hanaki and I set out to find out. Previous studies presented different portraits of individuals to observers and asked them about their beliefs about these people. However, often these pictures are taken from portrait databases or even computer generated, and thus allow researchers to study perceptions but not whether these beliefs are accurate. To study this question, we needed to develop an experimental paradigm in which we could observe the trustworthiness of different people, take photos of them, and later present these photos to other individuals for rating. This is how we did it.

Comprising a total of 357 volunteers, our study started in Paris in October 2019, where we asked a first group of 76 volunteers to participate in a short experiment on economic decision-making. In the study, the participants were randomly matched into pairs without knowing with whom they were playing. Some played a role that required to trust another individual (Group A), while others were in a position to reciprocate or break the trust they had received (Group B). To heighten the stakes, real money was on the table.

It went like this: in a first stage, Player A had to choose whether to trust Player B (by saying “Right”) or not (by saying “Left”). Secondly, Player B had to decide whether to roll a dice or not.

Each player’s payoff thus depended on their own actions and/or the actions of the other player:

If player A chooses “Left”, then regardless of player Bs’ choice :

  • player A and player B both receive a payoff of 5 euros;

If player A chooses “Right” and player B chooses “Don’t roll” :

  • player A gets nothing and player B receives 14 euros;

If player A chooses “Right” and player B chooses “Roll” :

  • When the number of on the die is between 1 and 5, player A gets 12 euros and player B receives 10 euros;
  • When the number on the die is 6, player A gets nothing and player B receives 10 euros.

Group A participants could earn up to 12 euros, but only if they trusted the other player. To do so they were presented with the abstract choice scenario explained above while individually sat in a cubicle.

If they decided not to trust, they were sure to receive a meagre 5-euro payout for their participation in the study. However, once an A player decided to trust their B partner, their fate was in the B player’s hands. The latter could act in a trustworthy fashion by rolling a dice that promised to generate a 12-euro gain for the A player – or untrustworthy by claiming a 14-euro reward for themselves and leaving nothing for the others.

This type of game (called a “hidden action game”) has been previously developed as a measure of the selfless trustworthiness attitude of individuals.

We not only observed how participants acted in this game but also took neutral ID pictures of them before they were introduced to the task. These photographs were presented to 178 participants recruited in Lyon. We first made sure that none of these individuals knew each other. We then gave the participants in Lyon the task of trying to predict how the person they saw in the picture behaved in the game. If they were right, they would be rewarded by earning more money for their participation. We finally showed the same photographs to a third group of 103 people from Nice, in southern France. These individuals were asked to rate how beautiful they considered the faces in the pictures.

Does gender come into play?

Our results confirm that those people who are considered to be more beautiful by our raters are also believed to be much more trustworthy. This implies that in our abstract economic exchange, beautiful individuals are more likely to benefit from the trust of others. However, when investigating actual behaviour, we see that beautiful individuals are neither more nor less trustworthy than anyone else. In other words, trustworthiness is driven by good old individual values and personality, which are not correlated with how someone looks.

A beauty premium has been previously observed as well for men as for women . We might however suspect that women, who are generally believed to have a higher degree of social intelligence, might be better at determining the trustworthiness of their partners. Our results do not show any evidence of this. Women are on average rated as more beautiful and also rate others on average as more beautiful. However women do not act any more honourably in the game then men. Finally men and women agree in their expectations about who will be acting trustworthy or not and thus women are no better in predicting behaviours than men.

Are beautiful people more suspicious of their peers?

The adage that “not everything that glitters is gold” is thus also true for beauty in humans. However, we might wonder who is more likely to fall prey to this bias. One idea is that people who are themselves often treated favourably because of their looks might be aware that this is not something that should influence who you should trust.

We constructed our study such that we could also investigate this question. Specifically, the participants we recruited in Lyon to make their predictions also had their photos taken. We thus knew how much they were influenced by the looks of others but also how conventionally good-looking they were themselves. Our results are clear. The beauty bias is there for everyone. Though we might think that those who benefit from good looks can see behind the mask, they are as much influenced by the looks of others upon deciding whom to trust.

The beauty industry is thus right. Investing in beauty really is worth it because it creates real benefits. However, recruiters or managers should guard themselves against being fooled. One way of doing this is to make CVs anonymous and forbid photos in applications. But in many interactions, we see people who we have to decide to trust. Being aware of one’s bias is therefore crucial. Our results stress that this bias is very hard to overcome, since even individuals who from their own experience should be aware of beauty’s skin-deep value fall prey to it.

Don't be afraid to express your opinions in a balanced debate

Don't seek validation or fish for compliments, as this doesn't imply self-assurance

Was It Racist to Take Family Photos at a Wedding Without Me and My Wife?

A reader’s wife sees bigotry in their exclusion from group photos at a nephew’s wedding, but her husband is reluctant to write off his relatives for good.

By Philip Galanes

My wife and I attended my nephew’s wedding 18 months ago. He and his wife are now expecting a baby, and I was looking forward to meeting my newest relative. The problem: At their wedding, group pictures of our extended family were taken before my wife and I realized it. When we asked the photographer why we had been overlooked, he only reiterated that pictures had already been taken. My wife, a woman of color, believes that racism may be the reason for our exclusion. She wants nothing to do with my nephew or his family again. I understand her feelings, but I’d like to restart these relationships. My wife doesn’t want me to broach the subject. Thoughts?

In the absence of meaningful context here, I would probably defer to your wife’s assessment. (In all likelihood, she has more experience with racist episodes than you do.) At the same time, I am thoroughly unpersuaded by your investigation. It sounds as if you spoke to the wrong person: a wedding photographer who had little incentive to assemble your entire family for group photographs.

In my experience, the photographer (or a member of the wedding party) makes an announcement about family photographs after the ceremony. Could you have missed it? Or does your wife’s experience with your family make it seem likely that they would engineer her exclusion because of race? You provide no back story, but your wife may be better equipped to answer these questions.

What seems unjust to me, though, is your willingness to rely on a single conversation with a busy service provider to determine the future of family relationships. I wish you had spoken to your nephew 17 months ago! Since you didn’t, the best you can do now is ask your wife to suspend judgment if this was a novel experience with your family. If it wasn’t, I respect her decision. And then the question becomes: Do you want an independent relationship with these relatives?

When Parental Largess Turns Dinner Into a Smorgasbord

My wife and I treat our children and their spouses when we go out to dinner. We are well off compared with other family members. But one of our children’s spouses always orders the most expensive item on the menu — and sometimes two items, just to try different things. (They don’t do that when they are paying for themselves!) Should we ignore this, or is there a nice way to speak up? The last thing we want is to be petty when it’s not a financial issue.

Twice you say you can afford what your children and their spouses order. But to feel good about treating them — which you leave unsaid — you want them to behave within certain boundaries: They should order modestly, and without too many extras. Seems totally reasonable to me.

The problem: You haven’t communicated these boundaries to them, possibly because you think they’re obvious. Well, apparently they aren’t! So, choose your own adventure: If you like indulging your children, do it. You can afford to, right? But if these meals aggravate you, lay out some ground rules: “One meal to a customer, please. And let’s order conservatively, OK?”

All This Story’s Missing Is a Cosmo

I met an attractive guy at a friend’s party. He is interested in getting into my line of work, so I gave him my card. He called the next day, and we agreed to meet for drinks. Before we met, I asked my friend if he was single: He is not. At drinks, I answered his work questions, then he asked if he could speak to me in confidence. I said he could. He told me that his wife had asked him to consider an open relationship. He didn’t flat-out ask me to hook up, but it was clear that his interest in meeting wasn’t strictly professional. I am not interested in an open relationship. Would it be wrong to tell our mutual friend how this panned out?

So, you want to know if it’s OK to dine out on a “Sex and the City”-type misadventure after promising a man (who didn’t proposition you) that he could speak in confidence. I am not being a goody-two-shoes when I tell you that keeping my word generally makes me feel better about myself than the fleeting thrill I get from gossiping. This episode has nothing to do with your mutual friend: Keep her out of it.

Not Every Wedding Needs a Dress

My gay son and his partner are getting married. They plan to wear themed outfits. I support their union and their choices. They identify as male and wear traditional male garb. But secretly, I’ve dreamed that one of them, preferably my son, would wear the traditional white wedding gown that I wore. Its elegance contrasts sharply with their planned outfits. Should I share my desire?

You may be trolling me here, but your question would strike me as homophobic even if you weren’t: Why mention your son’s sexuality at all? Do you think it makes him more likely to wear a dress than a straight son? I would let all your children dress in peace for their weddings. Donate your gown to a clothing charity if you want it to be worn again.
