Ivey Engineering Awards $1,000 Scholarship

Ivey Engineering Inc., has announced the winner of the summer 2017 Ivey Engineering bi-annual scholarship essay contest. The winner is Kaylee Martin, a freshman at the University of Washington.

Martin, whose major is neurobiology, competed with over 100 other college students from the United States and Canada.

Applicants were tasked to write an 800- to 1,000-word essay on one of three topics and were judged for creativity and originality.

Martin's winning essay discussed several unique ways to incorporate energy efficiency into a building. One tip she mentions in her essay is to combine solar power with geothermal innovations.

"Now architects can design buildings to harness the local resources surrounding them, which means that some of the energy used can be offset by the energy produced," Martin explains in her essay.

"We were looking for some originality and energy-efficiency design tips that were not as obvious as others," says Bill Ivey, principal consultant at IEI. "You can tell that Kaylee spent some time doing research from the quality of her essay."

Any potential or current college or university undergraduate student within the United States or Canada is able to apply. Furthermore, applicants from any major are able to apply.

Scholarships

IEI awards scholarships to graduating seniors, one-time renewal scholarships for undergraduate students and to Alpha Kappa Alpha women pursuing a graduate degree.  To apply to any 2024 IEI scholarships, click here .

The timeline for IEI Scholarships is as follows:

○ February – Scholarship applications will be available online

○ March – Scholarship applications close

○ Early April – Scholarships reviewed by the committee and Scholarship interviews will be conducted

○ Mid April – Scholarship recipients will be notified

○ Mid May/Early June – Scholarship recipients must attend the Annual Scholarship Presentation.

Late applications will not be accepted.  Deadline:  March 29, 2024

All applications must be submitted online.  Please be sure to answer all questions or mark N/A where not applicable.  See below for more information concerning the scholarships that we award.

• Be a young woman of African American descent graduating from a high school in central Indiana
• Have a GPA of 2.5 or higher Have proof that she has been accepting to a college or university
• Demonstrate community service and leadership experience

To complete the application, students must provide the following information. Please note that all information must be scanned and uploaded into the online application form:

• Two letters of recommendation
• An official transcript from the high school.
• A college acceptance letter
• A brief essay (250 words or less) about the following topic: “Describe an area in your life where you’ve demonstrated leadership and overcame obstacles, either in your school, social or family life.”

The Vera Forte McCain Scholarships were endowed to ensure scholarship funding for women of Alpha Kappa Alpha who were pursuing their graduate education. Scholarships are released when funding is available.

To qualify for a Vera Forte McCain Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be a member of the Alpha Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
• Have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
• Have proof that she is attending graduate school
• An official transcript from the college or university
• A brief essay (250 words or less) about the following topic: “As a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha, how do you continue to be of service to all mankind?”

Renewal Scholarships

Periodically, IEI provides one-time renewal scholarships to previous scholarship recipients who are pursuing undergraduate education. Renewal scholarships are based on funding availability.

To qualify for a renewal scholarship, students must meet the following qualifications:

• Have proof that she is attending a college or university
• Have received an IEI scholarship within the last four years
• Been a previous IEI scholarship recipient

To apply for a renewal scholarship, the student must provide the following documents:

• Provide a letter that she is currently enrolled in school full-time (If awarded)
• A brief essay (250 words or less) about the following topic: “What has been your greatest accomplishment since receiving your initial Ivy Endowment scholarship?”

Scholarships

The Illinois Engineering Initiative offers scholarships to Illinois students enrolled in ABET-accredited engineering programs. 

The deadline to apply for IEI scholarships is April 15, 2024.

IEI Scholarship – $2,000

To be eligible for the IEI Scholarship, students must attend an Illinois university, be of at least Junior standing, and be enrolled in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET). (Note: Students enrolled in an engineering technology program are not eligible.) Applicants should have a B average or better in those courses which are accredited toward the engineering degree, and show evidence of financial need.

Peppy Moldovan Scholarship – $1,000

Applicants must be female engineering students currently enrolled as a sophomore at one of the following colleges or universities.

• Illinois Central College, Peoria
• Kaskaskia Community College, Centralia
• Rend Lake Community College, Centralia
• Bradley University, Peoria
• Southern Illinois University, Carbondale
• Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville
• University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The scholarship is contingent upon recipient’s enrollment and acceptance in an engineering program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) at one of the following universities:

• University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Illinois at Chicago

Butkus-Sylvester Family Scholarship – For tuition and fees not covered by other aid

The Butkus-Sylvester family has been fortunate to have multiple successful engineering graduates from The University of Illinois.  We believe the career opportunities that come from majoring in engineering at Illinois Urbana-Champaign are endless.  The paths we have all taken in our careers look quite different, yet we all credit our undergraduate experience as one that uniquely prepared us for life after college.  Our family is overjoyed to be able to assist another young, bright mind with similar experiences.  ILL-INI !!

It is the intent of the Family to provide an in-state tuition and fee scholarship for one undergraduate female engineering student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who is an Illinois resident and U.S. citizen. Preference may be given to a first-generation U.S. citizen.

If the recipient remains in good standing, and at the discretion of the Family, additional scholarships may be awarded to the recipient for subsequent school years. Such applications must be submitted in accordance with the IEI Scholarship application process.
