KCL/RAI UK 2 x PhD positions (to start Oct 2024)

Subject areas:, funding type:.

Stipend. Tuition fee.

2 PhD studentships exploring the relationship between technology, society, and culture in responsible AI. Offered by KCL's Department of Digital Humanities in association with RAI UK.

Award details

We are funding 2 x PhD studentships exploring the relationships between technology, information, society, and culture in the area of responsible artificial intelligence. These PhD studentships are based in the Department of Digital Humanities in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities at King’s. They are linked to the Responsible AI UK ( RAI UK ) programme – a collaborative, multidisciplinary network that conducts and funds research into AI to benefit people, communities and society and that unites the responsible AI ecosystem in the UK and beyond – and to the Digital Futures Institute at King’s.

AI has the potential to have a profound effect on everyday life, but AI-enabled technologies need to be developed with consideration of the social, environmental, and economic contexts they will operate in, and the benefits and challenges they might create. These PhD studentships offer an opportunity to explore the relationship between the individual and technology, combining technological knowledge with an understanding of human needs, cultures, and behaviours, and by examining areas such as (but not limited to) ethics, bias, transparency, and responsibility.

The research will explore the societal and/or cultural impact of this technology through the lens of responsible AI and is expected to be interdisciplinary in nature. The studentships will be supervised by Dr Kate Devlin, with a second supervisor from the Department of Digital Humanities, as well as advisory input and mentoring from RAI UK academics.

Award value

The studentships will be funded at UKRI stipend rates paid for three years. Home Fees (UKRI rate) will be covered for three years.

Eligibility criteria

  • The applicants will have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant field.
  • They will either have, or be completing, a masters degree or will have equivalent experience in these areas.
  • The successful candidates will preferably have some knowledge of artificial intelligence and experience working with local stakeholders to identify challenges and understand priorities. They will have experience of writing to a high standard, and a willingness to work in interdisciplinary teams with stakeholders and collaborators.

Award conditions

Due to the link with RAi UK, which runs until 2028, part-time studentships are not possible.

Application process

Applicants should submit:

  • A CV (max 2 A4 sides), including details of two references;
  • A cover letter outlining and demonstrating how their qualifications, experience, and interests make them suitable to pursue the research outlined above;
  • A one-page outline of possible ideas for how they might focus the work on particular questions;
  • Examples of written and/or technical work (e.g., previous dissertations, papers, code via GitHub).

These should be sent by email to  [email protected] by 31/05/2024 with “ RAI UK PhD application ” as the subject. Interviews will take place in late June 2024 with an expected October 2024 start. Please state your start date availability within your application.

12. Clinical Research Fellow

This role will be a key member of a research team undertaking a multicentre NIHR-funded trial of a novel ultra long-term subcutaneous EEG device for the management of treatment-resistant epilepsy. The trial will investigate whether a novel method to accurately count epileptic seizures, using a minimally-invasive ultra long-term subcutaneous EEG system, (i) is more accurate than a patient-reported seizure diary; (ii) is feasible and acceptable to patients and clinicians; (iii) reduces impacts of epilepsy and improves quality-of-life; and (iv) provides gains to the healthcare system when rolled-out into the NHS. The role holder will work in a world-leading epilepsy research team, reporting directly to Professor Mark Richardson. The team has cutting-edge expertise in investigating the dynamics of seizure occurrences. This new NIHR project is part of a larger portfolio of projects investigating how and why seizures start at a particular time, and whether continuous remote monitoring of seizures can contribute to epilepsy clinical management and a better understanding of mechanisms of seizure onset.

13. postdoctoral positions .

In this project the research associate will use Drosophila and mouse models of mitochondrial disease to investigate how mitochondrial metabolism contributes to neuronal dysfunction and neurodegeneration. Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a critical role in neurodegenerative diseases, including mitochondrial diseases, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Mitochondrial dysfunction triggers mitochondrial stress signalling pathways. Dr Bateman’s lab have developed Drosophila models of mitochondrial stress signalling in neurons. Our studies have shown that activation of mitochondrial stress signalling modifies neuronal function (Cagin et al. 2015, PNAS; Duncan et al., 2018 PLoS Genetics; Hunt et al., 2019 J Cell Biol). This project will study how mitochondrial stress signalling alters the levels of metabolites called polyamines in the brain to contribute to pathology in mitochondrial disease.
