Tamil filmmaking legend Mani Ratnam takes on the formidable task of adapting Indian bestseller “Ponniyin Selvan” as a two-part epic, the first of which released to excellent box office at home and abroad on Sept. 29. Streamlining the source material considerably, this impressive franchise starter — co-written by Ratnam, Jayamohan and Kumaravel — remains mostly faithful to Kalki Krishnamurthy’s five novels, first serialized in the 1950s in the Tamil magazine Kalki before being translated into multiple other languages, including English.
In the 11th and 12th centuries, Southern India was ruled by the Cheras, Cholas, Pandyas, Pallavas, Hoysalas and other dynasties. The film opens with the Chola crown prince Aditha Karikalan (Vikram) and his army being victorious on the field. Aditha sends his faithful aide, Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan (Karthi), to see what is happening in his father’s palace where Chola chieftains are gathering for a secret meeting.
Vandiyadevan soon falls in with a religious man, Azhwarkadiyan Nambi (Jayaram), another spy who also provides some comic relief. Together, they discover a plot to take the crown from the ailing king Sundara Chola and give it to his nephew, who had been passed over. Among those trying to use Vandiyadevan is the beautiful Nandini ( Aishwariya Rai Bachchan ), who uses her looks to get her husband, commander Chinna Pazhuvettariyar (R. Parthiban).
Things get more involved as the film goes along, of course, but Ratnam keeps the different strands moving at a fast enough pace so that you don’t notice the nearly three-hour running time. Nor does it matter that the titular Ponniyan Selvan doesn’t make an appearance until nearly the intermission.
DP Ravi Varman does justice to the sweep of the story, while CG battle scenes are staged like set-pieces from the “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, a comparison underscored by Rahman’s soaring music. The below-the-line work is top-notch throughout — not just with camera and music, but also in the production design (Thotta Tharani). The Cholas were famous for the temples they built, with the Thanjavur temple standing even now as a testament to their artistry.
Augmented with excellent visual effects, sets representing the city of Thanjavur, the new city of Kanchi and Sri Lanka, bring to life Kalki’s prose that enchanted so many readers. Similarly fine attention to detail went into the costume design, hair and makeup, as well as the jewelry (pieces of which are now offered on sale) for not only the princes and other nobles but also the ladies from Nandini to the princess Kundavai (Trisha Krishnan).
Ratnam has always had a knack for drawing out the best performances from Rai Bachchan (with whom he collaborated on “Iruvar,” “Guru” and “Raavanan”), doing so once again in the star’s first screen role since 2018, even if her dialogue is spoken by Deepa Venkat. In the role of Vandiyadevan, Karthi brings exuberant action to the film; Ravi charms as Arunmozhi; and Vikram and Parthiban exhibit dangerous intent. Rai Bachchan is suitably scheming, as is Krishnan as the princess who only cares about the Chola kingdom and is jealous (with reason) of Nandini’s beauty and ability to beguile.
The film ends on a cliffhanger. While not yet shot, Part Two has been announced and is expected to be released in 2023.

Maaran: 2022 Tamil Language Action Thriller Film
4to40.com March 7, 2022 Movie Reviews 1,352 Views
Movie Name: Maaran Directed by: Karthick Naren Starring: Dhanush, Malavika Mohanan, Samuthirakani, Smruthi Venkat, Ramki, Krishnakumar Balasubramanian, Mahendran, Ameer, Ilavarasu, Jayaprakash, Aadukalam Naren, Bose Venkat Genre: Thriller , Action Release Date: 11 March, 2022 Language: Telugu Running Time: – Minutes Rating: –
An investigative journalist is in trouble when he publishes an article that exposes bitter truths about a corrupt politician.
Maaran is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action thriller film written and directed by Karthick Naren, with the screenplay and dialogues were co-written by Suhas–Sharfu and Vivek. Produced by T. G. Thyagarajan, Sendhil Thyagarajan and Arjun Thyagarajan of Sathya Jyothi Films, the film stars Dhanush and Malavika Mohanan, with Samuthirakani, Smruthi Venkat, Krishnakumar Balasubramanian and Mahendran in supporting roles. The music is composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, with cinematography handled by Vivekanand Santhosham and editing handled by Prasanna G. K. The film is scheduled for a digital premiere through Disney+ Hotstar .
In February 2020, Sathya Jyothi Films announced a project with Dhanush, with the tentative title #D43 (the actor’s 43rd film in leading role). Karthick Naren was hired to direct, and G. V. Prakash Kumar was announced as the composer. The film marked Dhanush’s third project with the production company after Thodari (2016) and Pattas (2020). Arjun Thyagarajan, one of the producers, stated, “We were working with Dhanush on another film that was being directed by Ramkumar. But it’s a big-scale venture and we needed a lot of time for pre-production work. So, we thought we’d do another film with Dhanush in the interim and that’s how this movie came about”. Arjun had discussed with several directors for the project, before finalising Karthick Naren as the director. About Naren’s inclusion, he stated: “We’ve been in talks for six months. Karthick has grown from film to film, and this one will take him to the next level”.
In March 2020, screenwriter duo Suhas–Sharfu who worked in Malayalam films: Varathan (2018) and Virus (2019), were brought on board for co-writing screenplay of the film with Naren. Lyricist Vivek joined the technical team as the additional screenplay and dialogues writer; thereby making his debut in both the fields. The film was intended to start from May 2020, but the COVID-19 lockdown in India delayed the prospects of the launch. This resulted Naren to work on the pre-production during the extended period owing to the lockdown. The film’s title Maaran was officially announced with a poster release on 28 July 2021, coinciding with Dhanush’s birthday. An earlier film with the same title was released in 2002, and the makers had to obtain a no-objection certificate from that film’s producer.
In an interview with Ananda Vikatan, Naren stated that the film is an action thriller based on the backdrop of journalism, and he made the film due to his personal interest on the subject. His belief on social media being the greatest weapon used by people further motivated to make this film. Naren stated that apart from the social context, the film will also have commercial elements.
The music is composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar who is working with Dhanush for the fifth time, followed by Polladhavan (2007), Aadukalam, Mayakkam Enna (2011) and Asuran (2019), and his first collaboration with Karthick Naren. The songs were written by Dhanush and Vivek, who served as the primary lyricist for the album, featuring four tracks, and Prakash began composing for the soundtrack by March 2020 with two songs being completed. The composition process were completed within December. He was excited about the way, the songs were shaped up, and assured the fans that, the film will have a “solid album”. Prakash started working on the film score by December 2021.

Yugi Movie Review: A tedious revenge thriller with one too many twists
Rating: ( 1.5 / 5).
All it takes for thriller films to engage the audience is a smart screenplay that's tight enough to keep the guessing game on till the end. However, some filmmakers seem to believe that the only way to make thrillers is with a never-ending barrage of twists. Debutant filmmaker Zac Harriss' Yugi is one such film. The exposition and the unravelling feel so overwhelming that we lose interest halfway. Director: Zac Harriss Cast: Narain, Kathir, Natty, Anandhi
Purushothaman, a senior police officer, who is now in some unnamed foreign country (thanks to a tacky green screen background), seeks the help of Nanda Kumar (Narain), a private detective, to find a missing girl. Purushothaman's trusted aide Rajkumar (Kathir), a suspended cop, also joins the investigation team as they meticulously enquire about the girl and her whereabouts. At the same time, there's another gang, headed by a ruffian named Sethu (Natty), investigating the same case. At one point, these two parallel investigations converge and startling (at least that's what they intended) revelations are made. From there it's a game of... 'twists'.
Yugi is primarily about a young couple, who get exploited by the rich and powerful. But for the most part, the focus is not on them. It meanders around aimlessly and sometimes too conveniently to reach the central plot. Packiaraj's writing lacks clarity and relies solely on the aforementioned 'twists'. But once the misleading knots are untied and the real identities of the characters are exposed, we feel cheated rather than being awestruck. Take, for instance, the scene where a character sees a colleague's family photo, and bam! we have a song featuring the couple frolicking in Pondicherry. Why is the song coming out of the imagination of a random colleague? When one of the hundred twists unfolds in the final act, this song detour doesn't just feel like a colossal waste of time but also borderline cheating.
Among the actors, Narain and Kathir deliver earnest performances. While Anandhi resorts to wailing all through the film, Athmiya is that typical subordinate who is mostly in awe of her superior male colleagues. Natty's characterisation is again a tool to trick the viewer and makes zero sense once his real identity is revealed. Despite so many characters, there is hardly any emotional connect felt with any of them.
If the writing is clumsy, the making is equally shoddy. Since it's shot simultaneously as a Tamil-Malayalam bilingual, some characters and their dialogue delivery look abysmally out of the place. The title Yugi means 'guess' in Tamil. But what's there to guess when the film doesn't succeed in having its viewer interested in knowing what's coming next.

Movie Review – Children of Sin (2022)
March 28, 2024 by EJ Moreno
Children of Sin , 2022.
Directed by Christopher Wesley Moore. Starring Meredith Mohler, Lewis Hines, Cami Roebuck, Jo-Ann Robinson, Ana-Clare Henley, Jacob Thomas, Keni Bounds, Jeff Buchwald, and Faith Stanley.
After being sent to a sinister religious retreat by their stepfather, two siblings fight to escape in order to save their mother from harm’s way.
Religious horror: We genuinely don’t have enough of it; well, in cinema…there’s enough in real life. I knew by the title that Children of Sin would dive into religion and its grip over families, but I never expected such a detailed and harrowing look at its effects.
Yes, Children of Sin has all the makings of a typical low-budget indie horror: cheesy acting, plenty of blood, and some WTF moments. But what took me by surprise was the earnestness of the film. Director Christopher Wesley Moore showcases an ability to transform his material and elevate it beyond a traditional horror and hit hard. With all the things surrounding it, the story at the center of Children of Sin is compelling and keeps you hooked.
You feel the anger coming off the screen; you can tell there are years of resentment being worked out through the runtime. That passion and background are why Children of Sin is a must-see indie horror.
The film follows Emma and Jackson, two young kids sent away to what is a conversion therapy camp. Their mega-religious and creepy step-father send them someone they see who turns their mother into a shell of her former self. Sadly, they can’t focus on the insanity of home as they face the evil that is Mary Esther. Mary runs the Christian brainwashing school with an iron fist, and the story only gets more twisted..
We see how profoundly disturbed Mary Ester is, where the film shines. She somehow keeps up with her real-life evil counterparts, especially when the movie unveils her twisted conversion method. Mary Ester may not be a traditional slasher villain like Freddy or Jason, but she’s just as scary as anyone masked madman. Actress Jo-Ann Robinson eats the role up, making you love watching this disgusting villain.
Speaking of the acting in the film, Meredith Mohler and Lewis Hines are impressive when handling the weight of their roles. Not only are they dealing with a heavy tone, but their characters are both incredibly layered. Mohler’s Emma is dealing with an unplanned pregnancy, and Hines’ Jackson is struggling with his sexuality; these stories are primed for great material, and Christopher Wesley Moore doesn’t let us down. The filmmaker knows the importance of these stories and makes sure to showcase them without letting go of the horror.
In a lower-budgeted horror film, the acting is crucial to making it work, and it’s a pleasure that the talent involved was up to that task. When the story falters, or the cinematography feels a bit flat, you can be assured that the actors and director can move past that and still deliver solid work.
One of the biggest compliments I can give Children of Sin is that it makes me want to see more from everyone involved. While not a perfect, top-tier horror entry, you can see so much at play here. Director Christopher Wesley Moore is incredibly skilled, and this movie feels like a demo reel of what he could do with more money and a more robust script. Even the actors like Meredith Mohler, Lewis Hines, and Jo-Ann Robinson need more work following this.
Horror is at its best when it’s hitting you hard, emotionally, and with the scares. Children of Sin smashes into you, runs you over, and backs up on you so you can feel the pain. This is a movie filled with a lot of baggage, and sometimes that makes for the best viewing. You know you got a solid movie happening when you can feel the pain coming off the screen.

Rating: ( 1.5 / 5) All it takes for thriller films to engage the audience is a smart screenplay that's tight enough to keep the guessing game on till the end.
