The Networking essay is your opportunity to showcase your ability to connect, collaborate, and engage with a diverse network of individuals. Here are some tips and an outline to help you write an award-winning Networking essay:

Tips for Writing a Networking Essay:

Outline: You should follow the standard rule of writing an essay.

Introduction

Start with a Captivating Anecdote: Begin your essay with an introduction paragraph that introduces the whole point of the paragraph, whether it is about leadership, networking, etc.

Provide examples in the Body : Add a real-life example that illustrates your networking prowess. Showcase a memorable interaction or collaboration that highlights your effective networking skills that have brought a change or something positive.

Highlight Diversity: Emphasize the diversity of your network. Discuss connections with people from various backgrounds, cultures, and professions. Diversity shows your ability to bridge gaps and work effectively with a wide range of individuals. It is good to show that your networks involve, professionals, experts, and politicians (if possible), Academics (such as professors, writers, researchers, alumni, or students), and volunteers (such as community, social, etc.).

Impactful Connections: Share stories of how your network has helped you achieve your goals or make a positive impact in your community or field of study. It is better to use the STAR method to write your examples. Provide concrete examples of how your connections have opened doors or provided valuable insights. Demonstrate Reciprocity: Networking is a two-way street. Describe how you've contributed to your network by providing support, mentorship, or assistance to others. Please do not write examples about the things you got or achieved through your networks .

Conclusion: Summarize your leadership journey and its significance.

Part 1: Applying for the Chevening Scholarship (FAQ)

Disclaimer: Note that the advice given here below is my own personal opinion and not that of the Chevening Secretariat or the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office .

When applying for the Chevening Scholarship, you will be required to submit four written essays, each a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 500 words.

Quick Tips on how to write your 4 Chevening Essays:

When writing your essays, use the STAR and SMART approach.

Ensure that you cover the bases in each of your essays, mentioning the most important elements.

Your essays have to be truthful, concise, and well-written.

Ensure that you tell a story when writing your essays, you can add bullet points to list achievements and highlight career goals however there should be a flow.

Ensure that any stranger can make out what you are trying to say, making it clear what you are talking about. When making references to data or situations from your home country, be sure to mention the country's name.

Refrain using words like our and their, and opt to name what you are talking about.

Use Grammarly to spell check your work and ensure that your grammar is correct.

STAR Approach - Derived from Muse

Situation: Set the scene and give the necessary details of your example.

Task: Describe what your responsibility was in that situation.

Action: Explain exactly what steps you took to address it.

Result: Share what outcomes your actions achieved.

SMART Approach - Derived from CFI

Specific: Well defined, clear, and unambiguous.

Measurable : With specific criteria that measure your progress toward the accomplishment of the goal.

Achievable: Attainable and not impossible to achieve.

Realistic: Within reach, realistic, and relevant to your life purpose.

Timely: With a clearly defined timeline, including a starting date and a target date. The purpose is to create urgency.

Four Essay Topics

Leadership and Influence

Chevening is looking for individuals who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer. - Question as per the Chevening Website

Using the methods explained above (STAR AND SMART Approach), ensure that you speak on the times you have depicted leadership traits, the leadership positions you have occupied and the times you have displayed a position of influence. These can range from managerial positions, leadership in organizations (NGO's included), or in your day-to-day life. In addition, you can touch on what leadership ambitions you have and how this ties back to your community.

It is important to ensure that the examples are impact-driven and not only for self-gain.

Chevening is looking for individuals with strong professional relationship-building skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Please explain how you build and maintain relationships in a professional capacity, using clear examples of how you currently do this, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future. - Question as per the Chevening Website

Writing your networking essay is primarily about showing clear examples of the relationships you have built, how they were established, and how you have managed to maintain them. In addition, highlight how these said relationships have been instrumental in your personal development and the work that you do. Ensure that you are able to glean from every example the skill acquired and how these skills will be useful to you in the future as a possible Chevening scholar. This essay, in essence, is to show that you have the ability to use the opportunities given to you in a tangible and impactful manner.

Career Plan

Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan. Please outline your immediate plans upon returning home and your longer-term career goals. You may wish to consider how these relate to what the UK government is doing in your country. - Question as per Chevening Website

This essay provides an opportunity for you to layout an immediate 2-year plan, and a 5 to 10-year plan. Your plans need to be attainable and should speak to your ambitions as laid out in your career plan. The most important tip for when writing out your career plan, is to ensure that when you touch on your professional experience, it not be written as though it is a Curriculum Vitae but rather speaking on impact, journey, and career trajectory. You too are welcome to link your journey thus far, to how this informs your next career move, namely pursuing a masters degree. You should depict an understanding of what you want to do in the future, how this is tangibly attainable, and what your ambitions are long term.

Studying in the UK

Outline why you have selected your chosen three university courses, and explain how this relates to your previous academic or professional experience and your plans for the future. Please do not duplicate the information you have entered on the work experience and education section of this form. - Question as per the Chevening Website

Do not duplicate your career essay in this essay, however, you can link the information. You will also be required to list the three universities you will be applying to, the name of the courses at the said universities, and why you chose the particular university.

Tip: Depending on which course you intend to study, google the top-performing universities in the said field to inform your university choice. Then ensure that the universities you would like to attend are Chevening partner universities, before finalizing your list of your three chosen universities.

Please explain how you build and maintain relationships in a professional capacity, using clear examples of how you currently do this, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future. (minimum word count: 100 words; maximum word count: 500 words)*

Chevening believes in making and maintaining connections. Truthfully, that is the only way to achieve your goals. It is one thing to know what you have set out to achieve. But it is a completely different ball game to manifest it into reality, you will need a strong network of people around who have the know-how or more connections with the know-how on the various aspects of turning your dreams into reality. Afterall, no man can be an island. 

On that premise, I am sure you have networked once or twice in your career or personal endeavors for the furtherance of a set out goal. And those connections have a story behind them, and you have a tale of what you achieved due to banking on and utilizing your network. Well, there you are. now you just write it down.

Start off with your personal views on networking in achieving your dreams. What are your strongest networking skills?. E.g I mentioned my diplomatic skills.

Then mention how you form connections. And if there’s a chain, Chevening wants to know them all, e.g so and so linked me with so and so…

Next? How exactly did you utilize that connection? What were the results?

Top it up with how you plan on utilizing these skills in the future.

I know it’s just 500 words so pick the strongest story (stories) you have. 

Make sure your networking essay is connected to your leadership essay. 

USE THE STAR APPROACH:

Situation- What was that vision you had, the dream you wanted to realise? 

Task- What was the task to tackle the situation? Did you want to organise a community outreach? Was it to get funds?

Action- How did you leverage on your connections? Or did you already have a person in your network who could help? How did you reach out? 

Results – Now what exactly did you achieve from leveraging on your network to provide a solution for the situation at hand.

And voila! Your networking essay is complete!

CASE IN POINT:

Situation: I wanted to organise a community humanitarian outreach to IDPs

Task: Reach out to IDPs, Get NYSC’s approval, source for funds, source for clothes and food.

Action: My team member knew some people who knew the head of the IDPs, wrote a letter to NYSC, went round to all the major stakeholders in my place of primary assignment to solicit for funds, clothes and food. Pasted an e-flier soliciting for same. Utilized the vehicles and volunteers at my place of primary assignment, etc! Who I knew played more part in making it a success than what I knew.

Result: Reached more than 300 househokds. It was so successful my place of primary assignment requested for more interventions, received NYSC letter of recommendation.

Chevening scholarships have given me the chance to meet people from many cultures. If I were chosen as the winner, I hope to build relationships with Chevening graduates and company representatives to find better solutions for environmental foreign policy – since these issues concern us all. My life experiences have given me opportunities to connect with hundreds of people from various countries, religions, cultures, and professions; now through Chevening’s scholarship program I hope to connect even more people around the world!

My work at a non-profit organization has given me the chance to connect with many networks. I’ve formed connections with donor organizations, local stakeholder groups and community members alike. Additionally, as organizer of trainings, seminars and campaigns I was able to build rapport with experts in the field. So I participated in numerous field trips including one for farmers living rurally as well as urban slum dwellers; gathering data regarding their problems before presenting it in writing to authorities or daily newspapers. As a disaster management expert and agriculturalist, my knowledge makes me particularly sensitive to environmental concerns. Currently employed as the Project Officer for Charity Foundation – a national NGO – my projects revolve around environmental protection, climate change adaptation strategies in agriculture as well as other sectors.

While completing my Master’s studies, I became deeply engaged in climate change issues that impact urban slum dwellers’ quality of life. I have been exploring the impacts of climate change on five assets for livelihood, as outlined in the Sustainable Livelihood Framework from DFID. My undergraduate research focused on discovering alternative sources of chemical pesticides to control plant diseases through plant tissue cultivation, genetic engineering and biotechnological advancement. Through bio-control agents and botanical extracts, I’ve provided biologically eco-friendly alternatives to seed-borne and soil-borne fungal pathogens. To date, three papers have been published and several more are under examination.

My courses from esteemed UK universities are focused on environmental change and management, which can have disastrous results if not managed effectively. Since my master’s program in Environmental Change and Management overlaps with my professional and academic interests in environmental engineering and project management, this field was an obvious choice for me to further hone. Environmentalism also plays a large role in international development – something which challenges both my professional and academic abilities to the limit.

I hope to further cement myself as an environmental expert by expanding my knowledge and experience.

My country faces numerous UK priorities, but the one most relevant to my goals is Environment and Climate Change. Bangladesh has always been vulnerable to natural disasters due to climate change, rising sea levels, and higher temperatures that pose greater threats. Development in our country is necessary and I aspire to contribute my expertise in this area in order to benefit my people and my nation. By sharing what I know with others, I hope to give something back and make a positive impact on my home turf. I want to contribute towards the development of my nation and make a larger impact. Asked about 'Social Network' sequel, Aaron Sorkin teases new movie blaming Facebook for Jan. 6

Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin said he’s working on a film that will center on Facebook and social media’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the Capitol . 

Sorkin teased the project when asked about the role social media companies play in moderating news during a live episode recording of the podcast “ The Town with Matthew Belloni ,” which was released Friday. 

“Look, yeah, I’ll be writing about this,” Sorkin said. “I blame Facebook for January 6. I do.”

When prodded to explain further, he quipped, “You’re going to need to buy a movie ticket.” 

He was asked if the project will serve as a sequel of sorts to his 2010 hit film “The Social Network,” directed by David Fincher, which chronicled the rise of Facebook and won Sorkin an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. The screenwriter and director joked he'd give his publicist a break and refrained from divulging more.

"Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm and tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible, because that is what will increase engagement. That is what will get you to what they call inside the hallways of Facebook ‘the infinite scroll,’" Sorkin said.

When asked who was responsible for the algorithm, Sorkin named Mark Zuckerberg, who founded Facebook in 2004 and serves as the CEO of the social media platform's parent company, Meta.

"You think if Mark Zuckerberg stopped it tomorrow then all the problems of this country would go away?" Belloni asked.

"There’s supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity. There isn’t. There’s just growth," Sorkin replied.

"If Mark Zuckerberg woke up tomorrow morning and realized there is nothing you can buy for $120 billion dollars that you can’t buy for $119 billion dollars —‘So how about if I make a little bit less money? I will tune up integrity and tune down growth.’ Yes, you can do that by honestly switching a one to a zero and a zero to a one," Sorkin said to some cheers from the audience.

The Jan. 6 riot saw throngs of Donald Trump supporters besiege and break into the Capitol in attempt to overturn his loss in the 2020 presidential election.

Over the course of Trump's time in office, social media companies came under intense scrutiny over promoting false news, politician s' statements with no fact checking and divisive content that could have misled or riled up users — sometimes influenced by foreign actors.

Thus far, over 1,387 Jan. 6 defendants have been charged, and prosecutors have secured more than 984 convictions.

Aaron Sorkin confirmed during a live recording of “The Town” podcast that he is currently working on some kind of sequel to “ The Social Network ,” David Fincher’s acclaimed 2010 drama about the creation of Facebook that won Sorkin the Oscar for best adapted screenplay.

“Look, yeah, I’ll be writing about this,” Sorkin said about the social media company’s recent years. “I blame Facebook for January 6.”

Sorkin would not answer why he blamed Facebook for Trump supporters storming the U.S. Capitol, but he teased: “You’re going to need to buy a movie ticket.”

Sorkin added, “If Mark Zuckerberg woke up tomorrow morning and realized there is nothing you can buy for $120 billion that you can’t buy for $119 billion dollars, ‘So how about if I make a little bit less money? I will tune up integrity and tune down growth.’ Yes, you can do that by honestly switching a one to a zero and a zero to a one.”

Whatever Sorkin is cooking up sounds more like a spiritual successor to “The Social Network” than a direct sequel. The 2010 film starred Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and was a critical darling (it earned eight Oscar nominations, including best picture) and a box office hit with $224 million at the worldwide box office. Quentin Tarantino even named it the best film of the 2010s.

Sorkin first floated the idea of penning a sequel to “The Social Network” in 2021 when he said that “what has been going on with Facebook these last few years is a story very much worth telling, and there is a way to tell it as a follow up to ‘The Social Network,’ and that’s as much as I know.” But he had also once said on the  “Happy Sad Confused” podcast  that the only way a sequel to the movie would move forward is if David Fincher agrees to direct it.

As for Eisenberg, who earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Zuckerberg, he’s long expressed an openness to reprising the role in a potential “Social Network” sequel.

“Oh, yeah,” he once said. “To play a good role in a popular thing is very rare. This was an opportunity to play a complicated character that you’d normally play onstage or an art film, but on a big scale. For me, that was incredibly fortunate.”

Apple could launch a cellular network for iPhone users

The growing popularity of eSIMs could allow Apple and other phone manufacturers to launch their own cellular networks, a respected telecoms analyst has claimed.

eSIMs—which replace the conventional SIM card found in phones with a small chip that’s permanently embedded in the phone—are becoming increasingly commonplace. Indeed, Apple itself launched an eSIM-only version of the iPhone 14 in the U.S. in 2022, a move that has accelerated adoption of eSIMs.

With eSIMs eradicating the need to distribute physical SIM cards and allowing cellular networks to activate customers instantly, a growing number of companies have set themselves up as virtual networks, including Western Union, Revolut and various airlines.

Apple and other smartphone manufacturers could also launch their own virtual networks, technology analyst firm CCS Insight claims. “What’s to stop an OEM [original equipment manufacturer] like Apple themselves offering eSIM capabilities?” said CCS Insight’s senior analyst, Luke Pearce, during a webinar on eSIM technology.

Although companies such as Apple or Samsung would still be reliant on the physical infrastructure provided by conventional networks such as Verizon or T-Mobile, by becoming a virtual network they would own the direct relationship with the consumer, posing a threat to those established cellular network giants.

“One of the most drastic scenarios for eSIM operators could be if it encourages major phone manufacturers to become virtual network providers,” said CCS Insight’s director of consumer and connectivity, Kester Mann.

Mann added that such a move was “unlikely in the near term,” but warned that “the industry should be prepared for such a scenario, as it might mean that one day a customer could take a device and a service plan from the same company, without necessarily needing to interact with a traditional operator.”

The End Of SIM Cards

Apple is clearly setting the direction of travel for the mobile industry, with physical SIM cards being gradually phased out.

“We think Apple will continue to release this eSIM-only variant [of iPhone] in more markets, but at a slow pace, starting in certain markets like Canada, the U.K. and Australia, where eSIM support is more mature and the operator landscape is less fragmented,” said Pearce.

That could encourage other leading smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung and Google, to follow suit. With more than 50 different network operators in the U.S. now offering eSIM support and increasing support across the rest of the world, it feels like only a matter of time before SIM cards are eradicated entirety, although it’s a “fairly long road ahead,” Pearce warns, with global eSIM adoption currently at less than 3%.

Roaming eSIMs

The emergence of eSIMs has also proved to be a huge bonus for travelers, according to CCS Insight, with the emergence of roaming providers who offer much better deals on roaming data than the traditional networks.

“Despite a slow start due to the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the [eSIM] market here is booming, offering convenient and more affordable data-only roaming deals to millions of international travelers,” said Pearce.

“Our research suggests that already in some countries, as many as 10% of tourists are now procuring an eSIM before travel, with almost 60% considering it,” he added.

That’s backed up by a recent study from Juniper Research, which predicted the market for travel eSIMs will grow from 40 million this year to more than 215 million by 2028, largely fueled by cost savings. Juniper found that mobile subscribers spend an average of $8.57 per GB of data when roaming, but that international travelers using eSIMs spent only $5.50 per GB.

UPDATE: The NPR editor who penned an essay criticizing the network for what he saw as bias in its coverage of Donald Trump and a host of other issues has resigned.

Uri Berliner , who had been a senior business editor and reporter, posting his resignation letter to NPR CEO Katherine Maher on his X/Twitter account.

A spokesperson for the network declined to comment.

Berliner had been temporarily suspended from NPR after publishing on essay for The Free Press that called out the network for losing “an open minded spirit” and lacking viewpoint diversity. He cited, among other things, audience research showing a drop in the number of listeners considering themselves conservative.

While Berliner’s essay was immediately seized upon by right wing media as evidence of NPR’s bias, some of his colleagues criticized him for making mistakes in his piece in for using “sweeping statements” to make his case, in the words of NPR’s Steve Inskeep. Maher criticized the essay in a note to staffers, writing, “Questioning whether our people are serving our mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity, is profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning.”

But Berliner’s essay did trigger some discussion within NPR, as some voices on the right, including Trump, called for defunding the network.

PREVIOUSLY: NPR has put on temporary suspension the editor who penned an essay that criticized the network for losing the trust of listeners as it has covered the rise of Donald Trump and coverage of Covid, race and other issues.

Uri Berliner has been suspended for five days without pay, starting last Friday, according to NPR’s David Folkenflik.

“That wouldn’t be a problem for an openly polemical news outlet serving a niche audience. But for NPR, which purports to consider all things, it’s devastating both for its journalism and its business model,” Berliner wrote. He also wrote that “race and identity became paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace,” while claiming that the network lacked viewpoint diversity.

His essay set off a firestorm on the right, with Trump blasting the network and Fox News devoting extensive coverage to the criticism, along with calls for ending government funding for NPR.

In his essay, Berliner wrote that “defunding isn’t the answer,” but that its journalism needed to change from within. The network’s funding has been a target of conservatives numerous times in the past, but lawmakers ultimately have supported public radio.

Berliner shared his suspension notice with Folkenflik, who wrote that it was for failure to seek approval for outside work, as well as for releasing proprietary information about audience demographics.

Katherine Maher, who recently became CEO of the network, published a note to staff last week that appeared to take issue with Berliner’s essay, writing that there was “a criticism of our people on the basis of who we are.”

“Asking a question about whether we’re living up to our mission should always be fair game: after all, journalism is nothing if not hard questions,” Maher wrote. “Questioning whether our people are serving our mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity, is profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning.”

Maher herself has become a target on the right, with some figures citing her past social media posts, including one from 2020 that referred to Trump as a “deranged racist sociopath.” At the time, she was CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation. In a statement to The New York Times , Maher said that “in America everyone is entitled to free speech as a private citizen.” “What matters is NPR’s work and my commitment as its C.E.O.: public service, editorial independence and the mission to serve all of the American public,” she said.

An NPR spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment. The network told The Times that Maher is not involved in editorial decisions.

Some of Berliner’s colleagues have been vocal in their own criticism of his essay. Eric Deggans, the network’s TV critic and media analyst, wrote that Berliner “set up staffers of color as scapegoats.” He also noted that Berliner “didn’t seek comment from NPR before publishing. Didn’t mention many things which could detract from his conclusions.”

Journalist who accused NPR of liberal bias resigns from the network

Uri Berliner, the veteran NPR journalist who publicly accused his employer of liberal bias, has resigned from the network.

Berliner posted a message Wednesday on the social media platform X with his resignation letter to the public broadcaster’s chief executive Katherine Maher.

“I am resigning from NPR, a great American institution where I have worked for 25 years,” Berliner wrote. “I don’t support calls to defund NPR. I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism. But I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems I cite in my Free Press essay.”

Berliner, a business editor at the network, was suspended last Friday, four days after the appearance of an April 9 opinion piece for the Substack newsletter the Free Press . His essay said NPR is catering to “a distilled worldview of a very small segment of the U.S. population.” The overall thrust of the piece asserted that NPR has “lost America’s trust.”

Berliner was suspended for five days for violating NPR’s policy requiring management to clear any work produced for another media outlet.

Berliner’s essay said he voted against former President Trump in 2016 and 2020 but that he believes progressive advocacy seeped into the network’s coverage of Trump and other topics such as the Israel-Hamas war, the origins of COVID-19 and the contents of Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop.

Berliner’s polemic was promoted by conservative critics of NPR, which led to the resurfacing of politically charged social media posts from Maher.

Maher, who took over as NPR’s chief executive in January, expressed her disdain for Trump in a number of tweets, including one 2020 post in which she called him a racist.

NPR issued a statement Tuesday calling the resurfaced tweets a coordinated attempt to damage the network.

“This is a bad faith attack that follows an established playbook, as online actors with explicit agendas work to discredit independent news organizations,” the network said. “In this case, they resorted to digging up old tweets and making conjectures based on our new CEO’s resume. Spending time on these accusations is intended to detract from NPR’s mission of informing the American public and providing local information in communities around the country is more important than ever.”

Maher previously headed the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, and has no previous experience in journalism.

She did not respond to Berliner by name, but defended NPR’s performance in a letter to staff made public last week.

“Questioning whether our people are serving our mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity, is profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning,” Maher wrote.

NPR had no comment on Berliner’s resignation.

2024 NFL draft: Mel Kiper's Round 1 predictions, buzz, notes

If you're reading this right now, congratulations -- you've made it. The 2024 NFL draft is upon us. We're here. Round 1 begins Thursday night ( 8 p.m. ET , ESPN, ABC and the ESPN app).

This class features a lot of mystery ... after No. 1 . We know the Bears are going to take the best player in the draft there, but there's intrigue after that, including potential trades up for quarterbacks. So while I'm not doing a mock during the week of the draft this year, I wanted to tell everyone what I'm hearing after my calls around the league with front office execs, coaches and people who know best.

Aaron Sorkin is working on a Jan. 6-focused follow-up to The Social Network

He blames facebook for the capitol attack, so that could make for one interesting movie..

Aaron Sorkin has announced that he’s currently writing a followup script to The Social Network , according to The Hollywood Reporter . He broke the news during an episode of The Town podcast that centered on how Facebook and social media have influenced democracy in the years since his Oscar-winning hit. The first film chronicled the early days of Mark Zuckerberg’s social network and starred Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake, among others.

Sorkin is cagey on the actual details of the new script, but it looks to follow Facebook throughout the Trump era. He went on to tell the podcast hosts that he actually blames the social media site for the January 6 riots that claimed the lives of five people and led to the injuries of more than 140 police officers . “Look, yeah, I’ll be writing about this,” Sorkin told podcast hosts Matthew Belloni and Peter Hamby. “I blame Facebook for January 6.”

He didn’t give any reason as to why he blames Facebook for the attack on the capitol, telling the podcast hosts that they will have to “buy a movie ticket.” Facebook, Google, Twitter and Reddit were all subpoenaed as part of the investigation into January 6. Lawmakers have suggested that Facebook didn’t take the proper steps to handle the “Stop the Steal” movement, which was organized on the platform, and that it didn’t recognize the danger posed by these groups until after the violence in DC.

Whistleblower Frances Haugen told Congress that Facebook disbanded its civic integrity team after the 2020 election. She also has said that Facebook knew its algorithms and platforms promoted harmful content and that “it failed to deploy internally recommended or lasting countermeasures.” According to Haugen, the company chose profits over safety.

Sorkin has obviously been paying attention to all of this, saying in the same interview that “Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible. Because that is what will increase engagement.” He further dinged the company by suggesting that “there’s supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity. There isn’t. There’s just growth.”

Now, don’t go heading to your local multiplex to buy a ticket for The Social Network 2: Electric Boogaloo just yet. The script is still in the early stages and Sorkin hasn’t announced a partnership with any studio to get the film made. This also isn’t his first attempt to get something like this off the ground. He was previously working on a script entirely about January 6, but it didn’t move forward. It remains to be seen if some aspects of that script will end up in followup to The Social Network , should it actually get made. He told the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he would only push to make a sequel to The Social Network if David Fincher returned to direct it.

If a studio does sign on to make this project, which is fairly likely given the success of the 2010 film, it leaves me with two glaring questions. Can Jesse Eisenberg grow a sweet beard and what are his thoughts on ultra-premium livestock ?
