How to Write a News Article That's Effective

Techniques for writing a news article differ from those needed for academic papers. Whether you're interested in writing for a school newspaper, fulfilling a requirement for a class, or seeking a writing job in journalism, you'll need to know the difference. To write like a real reporter, consider this guide for how to write a news article.

Choose Your Topic

First, you must decide what to write about. Sometimes an editor or instructor will give you assignments, but you’ll often have to find your own topics to cover.

If you get to choose your topic, you might be able to pick a subject related to your personal experience or family history, which would give you a strong framework and a dose of perspective. However, this route means you must work to avoid bias—you may have strong opinions that could affect your conclusions. You also could pick a topic that revolves around a personal interest, such as your favorite sport.

Research for Your News Article

Even if you end up with a topic close to your heart, you should begin with research, using books and articles that will give you a full understanding of the subject. Go to the library and find background information about people, organizations, and events you intend to cover.

Next, interview a few people to collect more information and quotes that give perspective on the topic. Don't be intimidated by the idea of interviewing important or newsworthy people—an interview can be as formal or informal as you want to make it, so relax and have fun with it. Find people with backgrounds in the topic and strong opinions, and carefully write down or record their responses for accuracy. Let the interviewees know that you will be quoting them.

Parts of a News Article

Before you write your first draft, you should be aware of the parts that make up a news story:

Headline or title

The headline  of your article should be catchy and to the point. You should punctuate your title using Associated Press style guidelines unless your publication specifies something else. Other members of the publication staff frequently write the headlines, but this will help focus your thoughts and maybe save those other staffers some time.

• "Panel chooses 3 essay winners"

The byline is the name of the writer—your name, in this case.

Lead (sometimes written "lede")

The lead is the first sentence or paragraph, written to provide a preview of the entire article. It summarizes the story and includes many of the basic facts. The lead will help readers decide if they want to read the rest of the news article or if they are satisfied knowing these details.

Once you’ve set the stage with a good lead, follow up with a well-written story that contains facts from your research and quotes from people you’ve interviewed. The article should not contain your opinions. Detail any events in chronological order. Use the active voice —not passive voice —when possible, and write in clear, short, direct sentences.

In a news article, you should use the inverted pyramid format—putting the most critical information in the early paragraphs and following with supporting information. This ensures that the reader sees the important details first. Hopefully they'll be intrigued enough to continue to the end.

The sources

Include your sources in the body with the information and quotes they provide. This is different from academic papers, where you would add these at the end of the piece.

Your conclusion can be your last bit of information, a summary, or a carefully chosen quote to leave the reader with a strong sense of your story.

A newspaper article should provide an objective, factual account of an event, person, or place. Most newspaper articles are read quickly or skimmed by the reader, so the most important information should always appear first, followed by descriptive content that rounds out the story. By conducting research and following the correct organizational structure, you can create an informative newspaper article in no time.

Sample Articles

Conducting Interviews and Research

• Your sources should be experts in the field your article is focusing on, such as a certified professional, a professor, or an academic. You can use sources that have extensive experience or background in a field that relates to your article.
• Sources like a witness to an event can also be useful, especially if they have first-hand experience of the topic you are covering.

• You may need to conduct more than 1 interview with your sources, especially if they are a major source for the article. You can also send follow-up questions to your sources as needed.
• You will need to transcribe your interviews by typing them up to ensure you quote your sources correctly. Having transcriptions will also make fact checking your article and backing up your sources much easier.

• Make sure you cite the information properly in your article by noting the name or organization that provided the information. You should have credible sources to back up any claims or arguments made in the article.

• If you are writing the newspaper article for an editor, they may require you to provide a list of your sources for the article to show you have fact checked your work.

Structuring the Article

• For example, you may create a headline like, “Teen Girl Missing in Okotoks” or “Congress Stalls on Family Planning Bill.”
• In some cases, it may be easier to save the headline for last, after you have written the article, so you know what the focus of the article is and can sum it up clearly.

• For example, you may write a lead like, "An outbreak of flu in San Francisco has led to 3 elementary school closings this week, according to school officials." Or, "A missing girl originally from Okotoks was found Monday in an abandoned cabin in the Minnetonka area, according to local police."

• For example, you may write, “10-12 students have been diagnosed with the flu and health officials fear it could continue to spread if it is not contained.”

• For example, you may write, “The teen girl was reported missing on Friday afternoon by her mother after she did not come home from a study date at a friend’s house. She is the second girl to be reported missing in the past 2 weeks from the Okotoks area.”

• For example, you may write, “‘The girl is shaken, but does not appear to have any serious injuries,’ stated local Police Chief Wilborn.” Or you may write, “According to a statement by school officials, ‘The shutdown will prevent the flu from spreading further and ensure the safety of our students.’”
• Avoid using long quotes or more than 4 quotes in the article, as the reader may get confused or lost if there are too many quotations.

• For example, you may write, “The girl’s mother expressed relief for her daughter and concern about her community, noting, ‘I just hope no other girls go missing in this area.’”
• Or you may write, “Local health officials are urging parents to check the municipal health and wellness website, www.hw.org, for updates on when schools are able to reopen.”

Creating the Appropriate Voice and Tone

• For example, rather than write, “The missing girl’s mother thought it had to do with school,” you may write, “The missing girl’s mother thought bullying at school may have caused her daughter’s absences.”

• For example, rather than write, “A press conference will be held by local police tomorrow to address the missing girls and the public’s concerns,” you may write, “Local police will address the missing girls and the public’s concerns in a press conference tomorrow.”

• For example, if you're writing about two political candidates running against each other in an election, present both candidates in an equal light, rather than giving extra details about 1 candidate.
• If you're writing an op-ed piece, it's okay to mix some of your opinions with the facts.

Polishing the Article

• Reading the article aloud can also help you catch any spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors.

• For example, you may ask others questions like, “Were you able to understand what happened, based on the information in the article?” “Was the language clear and easy to follow?” “Was the article well supported with sources and quotes?”

• If you are writing the newspaper article for a class, make sure it falls within the prescribed word limit for the assignment.

Carve out a niche by gravitating towards underreported stories. "I personally tend to be drawn to stories that aren't paid much attention to, or stories that aren't on people's radar."

Newspaper Article Conventions : Newspaper articles are focused on sharing the essential points of a given topic with a wide readership.  Newspaper articles typically follow a standard format: they address the 5Ws (who, what, where, when, and why).  The article will then go into greater detail and provide the key ideas and information that the general readership should know.  There is often a focus on speaking to witnesses or getting an interview with people who are closely related to the subject of the article; as such, you will often find a lot of quotations being used to qualify and quantify claims and data being presented.

Sheridan alumna Domee Shi (Bachelor of Animation ’11) has been awarded the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for her directorial debut, Bao .

Winners of the 91st Academy Awards, which recognize excellence in cinematic achievements, were announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday (Feb. 24). Along with Bao , over one-dozen animation alumni were part of the team that worked on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse , which took home the award for Best Animated Feature.

Shi, a storyboard artist with Pixar, is notably the first female director of a short from the studio. Bao , which screened ahead of Incredibles 2 in theatres this past summer, tells the story of an aging Chinese-Canadian mother who receives an unexpected second chance at motherhood when a dumpling comes to life.

After developing an interest in animation in high school, Shi came to Sheridan to hone in on the aspect of the industry she wanted to pursue. She credits a second-year animation class taught by instructor Nancy Beiman with introducing her to storyboarding. She joined Pixar after graduation, and has worked on films including Inside Out , The Good Dinosaur and Incredibles 2. She is currently developing her first feature film at Pixar.

“We’re so proud of Domee” says Dr. Janet Morrison, President and Vice Chancellor of Sheridan. “It’s thrilling to have our graduates excel in their chosen professions. They’re achieving the pinnacle of success using skills they honed at Sheridan. Our alumni inspire us.”

Fellow Pixar story artist Trevor Jimenez (Bachelor of Animation ’07) received a nomination in the Best Animated Short Film category for his directorial debut, Weekends . Animal Behaviour , produced by Michael Fukushima (Animation ’85), was also nominated in the category.

Elsewhere, Emmy award-winner Craig Henighan (Media Arts ’95) was part of the team to be nominated in the Best Sound Mixing category for his work on Roma .

“Students seek out Sheridan because they know they will be trained in the skills they need to succeed,” says Ronni Rosenberg, Dean of Sheridan’s Faculty of Animation, Arts & Design. “Grads go on to contribute to the film industry in so many diverse ways. Domee, Trevor and Craig, and all the alumni who worked on this year’s Oscar-nominated films, are representative of the breadth of talent we see in our students every day. We’re incredibly proud of their accomplishments.”

Sheridan’s animation alumni are globally renowned, and their work has long been represented at the Oscars. In 1985, Jon Minnis (Animation ’83) won Best Animated Short Film for Charade , while in 2003, Eric Armstrong (Computer Animation ’88) won for his work on The Chubbchubbs! In 2015, three of the five films nominated for Oscars in the Best Animated Feature category were directed by Sheridan-trained animators, including Chris Williams, who won that year for Big Hero 6 . In 2017, Alan Barillaro (Animation ’96) took home an Academy Award for his short film, Piper.

Newspaper Article Analysis Term Paper

Newspapers are a means through which information is conveyed to the reader. However, there are different facets that are involved while conveying messages to the reader. The Washington Post is an example of a newspaper which will be used in this context for analysis with regard to “Philadelphia Escalated its Conflict with an Anarchist Group”.

The topic can make one to believe that there is a certain group trying to overthrow the government in place but, this is not the case. This is a newspaper analysis on the aspect of class differences, which apparently has been painted a different picture by the newspaper headlines.

The photograph depicts two different racial groups, the black and the whites. This is an implication that there exist two different types of classes. A photograph is an “object that has been chosen, composed, structured, worked on and treated based on professional, ideological and aesthetic norms, which are various factors of connotation” (cited in Bignell 98).

The two racial groups are a representation of the different classes that exist in Philadelphia. Price (431) has shown how the two groups suggest two types of classes: the wealthy and superior verses the poor and suppressed. This is illustrated by the white man who is neatly dressed and represents formality and authority while the three other men are a symbol of informality and submission.

Classism is also endorsed by the fact that there is unequal representation brought out by the two groups. The three black men as opposed to one white man tell it all about the inequality and injustice that prevails. The two groups are paradigms of the different cultural affiliations and social classes present in Philadelphia.

Cultural differences should not be used to point out a certain group of people as an anarchist as reported in the article. Unfortunately, this is the case in Philadelphia as the poor are seen as ‘White trash’ (Price, 431-435).

The photograph as declared by Carter in his ‘Semiotic Analysis of Newspaper Front-Page Photographs’, is used to portray a certain kind of attitude. Both groups connote lack of sentimentality. This can be attributed to the fact that there is some kind of resentment towards each other due to the differences in social class, not forgetting the conflicts involved.

The white man in the photograph is MOVE’s lawyer, a responsibility he has assumed out of obligation. He does not care about the black people who in this case are the suppressed minority characterized by poverty, illiteracy and ignorance.

The white lawyer is therefore representing the group due to the returns associated with this position and not because he cares for the black people, the poor. Robert Guzzardi has also been referred to as MOVE’s lawyer but his talk as indicated in the article, does not correspond to this role (Quinn and Flood A4).

According to the headlines, one expects to find an incomparable level of conflict between Philadelphia state and the ‘MOVE’ group. Apparently, this is not the case and the setting up of the blockade is not called for.

The demeanor of the ‘MOVE’ is one that is connoted by poverty, ignorance and illiteracy, away from the upheld perception that they rebel against the authority set in place. The cause of conflict as implied in the article can be solved through a consensus after arriving at a conclusion as implied by the photograph, despite not being the case.

The main theme of the article as observed from the headlines is that there is escalated dispute between the state of Philadelphia and the supposed ‘anarchist group’ going by the name ‘move’. Typographic coding has been used to grasp the attention of the reader.

In showing the emphasis of the conflict between Philadelphia state and the ‘MOVE’, the article has used capital letters while referring to these two groups. On the contrary, a detailed examination of the contents of the newspaper indicates that the move group is not an anarchist as reported. The difference is with reference to cultural beliefs, values and social class.

The large sized photograph and the eye catching headlines leave the reader in an indecisive status. What is what? Conflict, or there is more to the façade of conflict that has been pointed out in the headlines. The picture, contrary to the headlines, shows some dialogue taking place between two sides. At a glance, it is quite obvious that something is amiss here as the headlines and the photograph convey different messages.

The main war is on equality with regard to power and culture, and not treason. Contrary to what one may expect, there is no exchange of fire between MOVE and the blockade. This is a clear show that ‘MOVE’ is not an anarchist as stated.

Linguistically, the term ‘escalates’ and ‘anarchist group’ have been used to suggest tension and segregation thereby indicating resentment, hostility and displeasure. The article implies a connection with Philadelphia but maintains a distance with the anarchist group. Familiarity of the elite individuals in state is evident whereas details about ‘MOVE’ are lacking hence, maintaining a distance between this group and the reader.

MOVE is seen as a criminal gang and at no one time has the article supported this group in any way. Several allegations have been made and are thought to be linked with ‘MOVE’ but there is no single evidence of this.

Photographs, typographic codes and language are some of the elements that are used to analyze a newspaper. These elements can present a certain picture based on composition and appropriate structuring. However, it takes more than a mere glimpse to actually get the actual message. A thorough content analysis of any paper is very essential so as to obtain the actual message being conveyed.

‘People living alone 'are more depressed'’ is an article from the BBC website on http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-17475240. The article is a research that was done on the probability of people living alone being prone to depression. It was found out people living alone lacked a forum where they could share their feelings and thoughts. This therefore makes them accumulate a lot in their minds, which is likely to lead to depression. The research that was carried out revealed that people living alone bought more depressants compared to those who lived with others1. This story is significant not only to the United Kingdom community but also in United States and to the world at large. Work schedules, climatic conditions and sicknesses makes many people to live isolated lives. Technology is also another factor that has made people to loose touch with fellow beings as they can obtain almost everything by a simple touch of the button.

Were the issue to be addressed by the American media, the perspective could slightly be different. This would have been looked at in a wider area of the consequences of loneliness rather than looking at depression as a topic. The American media not only seeks to address the issue at face value but also go into the details of finding out how it is caused, the repercussions and how the issue could be sorted out. The difference in presentation of the issues is mainly because of the magnitude of the problem and how it affects people. We realize that depression is a bigger issue in United Kingdom while in United States, it is all about the lifestyles that people adopt and how it affects their lives.

‘Students to be given £100 towards travel to college’ is an article from the Somerset on the website http://www.thisissomerset.co.uk/Students-given-100-travel-college/story-15589968-detail/story.html. The article is an informative piece that highlights on the efforts of Strode College to offer transport facilities to their students. It gives the details on how the transport will be facilitated depending on the need of the students and their economic background. The principal of the college made the decision considering numerous numbers of students that prefer to obtain knowledge from the institution2. Apart from the fact that the institution is centrally located and served with numerous bus roots, it is also credited for its good performance. It is for this reason that the principal recognizes the financial burden of the parents and the students and seeks to boost them. This will enhance good performance among students of all status, as they will not have to worry about many other issues.

The issue in question is how to assist students get to their colleges without such problems. This is also for the purpose of bridging the gap between those from wealthy backgrounds and those from poor ones. The move was also moved to support new students in the college especially after the government slashed bursaries. The issue addressed is of international nature especially when it is considered that educations affects every young person. This being a paramount foundation, it is never fair for some students to miss out on quality education simply because they cannot afford it. The issue would have been handled differently in United States and most probably with the issue of race at hand. It would have been more of how to help students from single-parent backgrounds and more especially among African Americans to obtain quality educational facilities. When it comes to education in United States, it seems more like the black students are the ones who have more issues than the whites. The issue of balancing between educational standards of the whites and the blacks could have therefore taken center stage had the article been written in United States.

‘Emergency work on bridge delays traffic’ is an article in the Scotland on Sunday at the website http://www.scotsman.com/scotland-on-sunday/scotland/emergency-work-on-bridge-delays-traffic-1-2180381. This informative article seeks to alert people of the disruptions that will be taking place due to repairs that have to be done. The article explains on why the repairs have to be done and the people that will be affected. Since the article mainly affects United Kingdom, the issue would have been addressed in a similar way in Unites States. It is usually necessary for the government and even the private sector to notify the public whenever they are venturing into repairs or activities that will affect them. This is for the purpose of recognizing the inconveniences that will be caused to them as well as telling them why important it is for them to facilitate the project.

This is a kitty that was initiated by the sports fraternity to help some needy families in London. The idea emerged from reports that there were people in London who were languishing in poverty. It is for this cause that the sports people joined other charitable organizations and the public to mobilize people to contribute so that they assist such families4. The fund had so far received good response with a large number of people turning out to support them. It was a call to the public to keep on contributing towards this worthy cause so to facilitate equal distribution of resources. Even though the article is of a local nature, its activities affect the international community. It is a call for help and assistance to the needy. We realize that in every nation, there are usually people who are in need of support. We can choose to ignore them or mobilize each other to support them. If the article was set or written in United States, it would be a call to help other needy people in another country. United States has always been known to be quick in addressing issues of international nature yet ignoring what locally affects them. Whenever it is a call for charity, you will rarely hear of the funds being directed to some poor state in the country. It will be mainly to help some poor country in the Middle East, Asia or Africa as opposed to United States. This is mainly because the country never considers itself to be having major issues. United States feels like other nations need their support more than their own people do.

Newspapers are believed to have been started around the 17th century. By the 19th century, the common person became familiar with them. It is thought that Acta Diurna was the first newspaper published in Rome, around 59 BC. However, any proof or evidence has not been found.

Gazette Bengal, 1970 | In India, a British Englishman named James Augustus Hicky started a newspaper in Bengal. The year was 1780 and the paper was called Gazette Bengal. It was followed by the printing of many other newspapers such as the Madras Gazette, Calcutta Gazette and Bombay Herald.

Pre- Independence | During the pre-independence period, many newspapers were published secretly. They played a prominent role in sharing the news and activities of Indian leaders. Various articles and poems were published which ignited the spark of independence in the minds of the common man.

Mental health care is hard to find, especially for people with Medicare or Medicaid

With rates of suicide and opioid deaths rising in the past decade and children's mental health declared a national emergency , the United States faces an unprecedented mental health crisis. But access to mental health care for a significant portion of Americans — including some of the most vulnerable populations — is extremely limited, according to a new government report released Wednesday.

The report, from the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General, finds that Medicare and Medicaid have a dire shortage of mental health care providers.

The report looked at 20 counties with people on Medicaid, traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans, which together serve more than 130 million enrollees — more than 40% of the U.S. population, says Meridith Seife , the deputy regional inspector general and the lead author of the report.

Medicaid serves people on low incomes, and Medicare is mainly for people 65 years or older and those who are younger with chronic disabilities.

The report found fewer than five active mental health care providers for every 1,000 enrollees. On average, Medicare Advantage has 4.7 providers per 1,000 enrollees, whereas traditional Medicare has 2.9 providers and Medicaid has 3.1 providers for the same number of enrollees. Some counties fare even worse, with not even a single provider for every 1,000 enrollees.

"When you have so few providers available to see this many enrollees, patients start running into significant problems finding care," says Seife.

The findings are especially troubling given the level of need for mental health care in this population, she says.

"On Medicare, you have 1 in 4 Medicare enrollees who are living with a mental illness," she says. "Yet less than half of those people are receiving treatment."

Among people on Medicaid, 1 in 3 have a mental illness, and 1 in 5 have a substance use disorder. "So the need is tremendous."

The results are "scary" but "not very surprising," says Deborah Steinberg , senior health policy attorney at the nonprofit Legal Action Center. "We know that people in Medicare and Medicaid are often underserved populations, and this is especially true for mental health and substance use disorder care."

Among those individuals able to find and connect with a provider, many see their provider several times a year, according to the report. And many have to drive a long way for their appointments.

"We have roughly 1 in 4 patients that had to travel more than an hour to their appointments, and 1 in 10 had to travel more than an hour and a half each way," notes Seife. Some patients traveled two hours each way for mental health care, she says.

Mental illnesses and substance use disorders are chronic conditions that people need ongoing care for, says Steinberg. "And when they have to travel an hour, more than an hour, for an appointment throughout the year, that becomes unreasonable. It becomes untenable."

"We know that behavioral health workforce shortages are widespread," says Heather Saunders , a senior research manager on the Medicaid team at KFF, the health policy research organization. "This is across all payers, all populations, with about half of the U.S. population living in a workforce shortage."

But as the report found, that's not the whole story for Medicare and Medicaid. Only about a third of mental health care providers in the counties studied see Medicare and Medicaid patients. That means a majority of the workforce doesn't participate in these programs.

This has been well documented in Medicaid, notes Saunders. "Only a fraction" of providers in provider directories see Medicaid patients, she says. "And when they do see Medicaid patients, they often only see a few."

Lower reimbursement rates and a high administrative burden prevent more providers from participating in Medicaid and Medicare, the report notes.

"In the Medicare program, they set a physician fee rate," explains Steinberg. "Then for certain providers, which includes clinical social workers, mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists, they get reimbursed at 75% of that rate."

Medicaid reimbursements for psychiatric services are even lower when compared with Medicare , says Ellen Weber , senior vice president for health initiatives at the Legal Action Center.

"They're baking in those discriminatory standards when they are setting those rates," says Steinberg.

The new report recommends that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) take steps to increase payments to providers and lower administrative requirements. In a statement, CMS said it has responded to those recommendations within the report.

According to research by Saunders and her colleagues at KFF, many states have already started to take action on these fronts to improve participation in Medicaid.

Several have upped their payments to mental health providers. "But the scale of those increases ranged widely across states," says Saunders, "with some states limiting the increase to one provider type or one type of service, but other states having rate increases that were more across the board."

Some states have also tried to simplify and streamline paperwork, she adds. "Making it less complex, making it easier to understand," says Saunders.

But it's too soon to know whether those efforts have made a significant impact on improving access to providers.

CMS has also taken steps to address provider shortages, says Steinberg.

"CMS has tried to increase some of the reimbursement rates without actually fixing that structural problem," says Steinberg. "Trying to add a little bit here and there, but it's not enough, especially when they're only adding a percent to the total rate. It's a really small increase."

The agency has also started covering treatments and providers it didn't use to cover before.

"In 2020, Medicare started covering opioid treatment programs, which is where a lot of folks can go to get medications for their substance use disorder," says Steinberg.

And starting this year, Medicare also covers "mental health counselors, which includes addiction counselors, as well as marriage and family therapists," she adds.

While noteworthy and important, a lot more needs to be done, says Steinberg. "For example, in the substance use disorder space, a lot of addiction counselors do not have a master's degree. And that's one of their requirements to be a counselor in the Medicare program right now."

Removing those stringent requirements and adding other kinds of providers, like peer support specialists, is key to improving access. And the cost of not accessing care is high, she adds.

"Over the past two decades, [in] the older adult population, the number of overdose deaths has increased fourfold — quadrupled," says Steinberg. "So this is affecting people. It is causing deaths. It is causing people to go to the hospital. It increases [health care] costs."

Universal music sued for unauthorized sample in mary j. blige's 'real love', universal music group sued over mary j. blige ... 'real love' ripped my sample.

Universal Music Group is facing a new lawsuit ... and it all has to do with Mary J. Blige 's most famous song -- which someone is now claiming illegally sampled an old jam.

According to new legal docs, obtained by TMZ, a company called TufAmerica, Inc. -- which owns Tuff City Records -- is suing the music publishing giant, claiming it sampled their song "Impeach the President" in MJB's "Real Love" without getting permission.

"Real Love" allegedly uses an uncleared sample from "Impeach the President" in both a sound recording and the musical composition. Tuff City claims they've reached out to UMG over the issue, but Universal hasn't addressed their concerns ... so, now they're suing.

What's interesting is that if you look into what song is actually credited as the sample for "Real Love" -- it's actually another hip hop song that came out in the '80s called "Top Billin'" by Audio Two ... and if you look at that song and what they sampled, 'ITP' is in fact listed.

Tuff's suing for damages and wants to stop Universal from continuing to profit off its sample in "Real Love" until the matter's resolved. BTW ... Mary is not a defendant in this.

• Who killed young beautician? DNA sample ignites half-century-old Minnesota murder case

Jim Bontjes and his brother-in-law crisscrossed the flatland of southern Minnesota for hours one early autumn day in 1975, looking for some sign of his little sister. JoAnn Bontjes had vanished a couple of days earlier, after an evening socializing with friends at the American Legion in Trimont.

Bontjes drove to abandoned farms, gravel pits, all over Martin County checking for any trace of JoAnn, until he came across a sheriff's squad car and an ambulance parked along a roadside. He knew his search was over. A half-century later, her killing is still unsolved, but a new DNA sample recovered from the crime scene could reinvigorate an investigation that never went far.

"The deputy sheriff told me it was her body. And that was it," Jim Bontjes said Friday, recalling a moment nearly 50 years ago. JoAnn Bontjes, who operated a beauty salon in nearby Sherburn, had been shot in the head with a shotgun.

It was Oct. 3, 1975, that a farmer found the body in a roadside ditch south of Trimont. Bontjes' parents both died not knowing what happened to her. Now, investigators "discovered an unknown DNA sample" from the scene where the body was found, Martin County Sheriff Jeff Markquart said in a statement released Thursday. It has been submitted it to the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) for analysis.

"We are in the process of trying to determine whose DNA this is," the sheriff's statement continued.

Investigators have compared the sample with those collected from "multiple people ... and everyone that has submitted a sample has been ruled out as being a contributor to our unknown DNA profile," Markquart said in the prepared statement. No one was available with the Sheriff's Office on Friday to elaborate on the makeup of the DNA or how it was found.

Jim and JoAnn Bontjes were two of four children raised in Sherburn by their parents, B.J. and Wilma. Jim Bontjes, now 74, said his brother died in 2007 and his sister in 2008. Their parents, Wilma and B.J. Bontjes, also did not live to know who took their youngest child.

As time passed and no leads emerged, "you just didn't bring it up," Jim Bontjes told the Star Tribune. Even now, his hope is muted. He's the only one left from the family of six.

"I have no way to know, one way or the other" whether a resolution will come, he said. "It's just that Mom and Dad would have loved to have answers. But they're gone, so I just keep my fingers crossed."

Bontjes was last seen on Oct. 2, 1975, at about 12:30 a.m., when she left the Trimont American Legion club. She was thought to be making the drive home to Sherburn, where she lived with her parents, about 8 miles south. Sherburn is 20 miles west of Fairmont along Interstate 90.

The next day, the farmer saw Bontjes' partly clothed body in a ditch near a cemetery roughly 4 miles south of Trimont.

Two miles south of Trimont, law enforcement found her car along Hwy. 4. Her shoes were on the pavement, her purse and jacket were in the car, and the keys were in the ignition.

Tire tracks indicated another vehicle had pulled in front of her car, the Sheriff's Office said at the time.

The search began when Bontjes failed to show up at the beauty salon the next day.

A few days after Bontjes was found dead, the Sheriff's Office disclosed reports from several beauticians in Fairmont about what they described as sexually suggestive telephone calls from a male. They came in the days leading up to the the discovery of the body

Lisa Lenning said she and Bontjes were friends. The two were hanging out together at the Legion in Trimont early in the evening the day Bontjes was last seen alive.

"We had been together that afternoon and at the Legion," Lenning told the Star Tribune. She recalled nothing out of the ordinary before she headed home to Trimont.

"Then she didn't show up for work and didn't get home," Lenning said of her friend, who she'd known for about a year and a half. "Her sister started calling around and asking questions. ... I didn't have anything to tell her."

Lenning said an investigator came by her home "and asked a bunch of questions, and that was that."

For a while after Bontjes' death, "there were a lot of stressed-out people, including myself" and other women who traveled on Hwy. 4 between Sherburn and Trimont, Lenning said.

Stephen Breyer: The Supreme Court I Served On Was Made Up of Friends

Recently, the Supreme Court justices Sonia Sotomayor and Amy Coney Barrett spoke together publicly about how members of the court speak civilly to one another while disagreeing, sometimes vigorously, about the law. Considerable disagreements on professional matters among the Supreme Court justices, important as they are, remain professional, not personal. The members of the court can and do get along well personally. That matters.

In my tenure, this meant that we could listen to one another, which increased the chances of agreement or compromise. It means that the court will work better for the nation that it serves. And I wonder: If justices who disagree so profoundly can do so respectfully, perhaps it is possible for our politically divided country to do the same.

Sandra Day O’Connor was the first woman appointed to the court; Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the second. I remember being slightly surprised when, during a visit to meet with several European judges, they suddenly disappeared. Where had they gone? It seems they went off together to look for suitable women’s collars for their robes. They found some, and Justice Ginsburg wore them ever after.

At about the same time, Justice O’Connor reminded me that our chief justice, William Rehnquist, had decided that he, too, needed something distinctive on his black robe. Inspired by Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Iolanthe ,” he decided to enliven it with a few gold stripes on the sleeves. Justice O’Connor found at a European bookstall a picture of Lorenzo de’ Medici wearing similar stripes. She suggested that we send it to him with a special message from her.

We would do things together outside class. Chief Justice Rehnquist, Justice Anthony Kennedy, Justice O’Connor and I would play bridge with friends and spouses (often changing partners). Today, I gather that justices who do not always agree on legal results nonetheless agree to go to hockey games or play golf together. (Why hockey in Washington, D.C., where baseball, football and basketball abound? Perhaps they just like hockey.)

As is fairly well known, Justice Ginsburg and Justice Antonin Scalia loved opera and became great friends. They even persuaded Justice Kennedy and me to take part in a Washington Opera performance of “Die Fledermaus,” provided, of course, that we simply sat onstage on a sofa and never opened our mouths. Justice Scalia had a good musical voice, however; he, law clerks and other justices would sometimes sing at the court, joined by Chief Justice Rehnquist, as well as by a friend of Justice Scalia who was a fine pianist and loved Cole Porter.

Justice Scalia and I would talk to students in high school or law school and other audiences about the court. It was obvious to those audiences that while we did not share basic views about how to interpret difficult statutory and constitutional phrases, we were friends.

Certain unwritten rules helped to smooth over differences and maintain good personal relations among court members. At conferences when we discussed cases privately, we proceeded in order of seniority, and no one would speak twice until everyone had spoken once. Thus, everyone could be fairly sure that he or she would have a chance to speak before minds were definitely made up. (This rule helped me, for I was the most junior justice for 11 years.)

Once all had spoken, we would discuss the case, back and forth. But one quickly learned that it did not help to say “I have a better argument than you.” Much better to listen to what others say and to find in their points of view material for working out an agreement or perhaps a compromise.

Chief Justice Rehnquist generally did not approve of jokes made during the business portion of the conference, though I admit I once told him while we were having coffee, after having recently nearly lost a majority on what we thought initially would be a unanimous opinion, “I have discovered how to get five people on a single opinion.” “How?” he asked. “Start with nine,” I replied.

In any event, agreement or disagreement, joke or no joke, in my 28 years on the court I did not hear a voice raised in anger in that conference, nor were snide or personal remarks ever made. The discussion was professional, disagreements reflected legal differences on the merits, and the justices tried to find ways to reach court agreements.

Justice O’Connor maintained that a highly important informal court rule was this: You and I may disagree strongly in respect to Case 1, but that fact has nothing to do with our positions in respect to (not legally related) Case 2, where we may be the strongest of allies. That is, no horse-trading.

After conference we would have lunch, often talking about sports or trading so-called jokes and other nonlegal matters. I remember once saying to Chief Justice Rehnquist that I thought it amazing that we were about to have a pleasant lunch when just 20 minutes before at conference we strongly disagreed about applicable law. His reply suggested that he thought only a short time earlier that half the court thought the other half had lost its mind.

What works for nine people with lifetime appointments won’t work for the entire nation, but listening to one another in search of a consensus might help.
