The program seeks to problematize the distinct identity of Filipinos, produce specialists capable of identifying and studying Philippine programs using multi- and interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies, expose students to different disciplinal perspectives, and impart a holistic approach to Philippine problems.

Philippine Studies Council

The Tri-College program is headed by the Tri-College Council, which consists of the deans of the Asian Center, College of Arts and Letters, and College of Social Sciences and Philosophy; coordinators from each college; and the head of the Secretariat.

Bernadette Abrera, PhD, Dean, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (current chair) Henelito A. Sevilla, Jr. PhD, Dean, Asian Center Jimmuel C. Naval, PhD, Dean, College of Arts and Letters

Coordinators

Noel Christian Moratilla, PhD (Asian Center) Nancy Kimuell Gabriel, PhD (College of Arts and Letters) Lou Angeli Ocampo, PhD (College of Social Sciences and Philosophy)

Secretariat

Maria Dulce F. Natividad, PhD (Head) Julie Ann dela Paz (Staff)

History of the Program

The Tri-College Ph.D. Philippine Studies Program traces its roots to two Diliman-based Ph.D. programs, instituted by the Asian Center and the then College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). In 1983, CAS split into three colleges. Two of the colleges that emerged, namely the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, continued to offer the degree separately.

In 1983, the UP Board of Regents initiated steps to integrate the three programs. A single curriculum with the same core courses for all three colleges was developed and instituted in 1993, but administered by each college separately, although the colleges coordinated in selected aspects of program administration. In 2000, a new initiative was launched by then Chancellor Emerlinda Roman to effect the full integration of the program under a single administrative structure. In 2004, the Tri-College Ph.D. Philippine Studies Program was established.

The Asian Center serves as the Secretariat of the Program.

The Intarmed Program

INTARMED (INTegrated Liberal Arts and MEDicine), is the seven-year program of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine (UPCM) which shortens the whole medical education by two years. It consists of two years of pre-medical courses (Learning Unit I – II), four years of regular medical studies (Learning Unit III – VI), and one year of clinical internship (Learning Unit VII). Students who enter Level I are considered direct entrants while students who enter Level III are considered lateral entrants.

The MD-PhD (Molecular Medicine) Program

The dual MD- PhD (Molecular Medicine) program of the UPCM aims to train aspiring physician- scientists for careers dedicated to the pursuit of basic and applied biomedical research towards the advancement of health from individual to global levels. The prescribed program of study comprises eight years: one year of graduate level coursework and research, five years of medical education (LU III – VII of the INTARMED program) and two years for completion and defense of a PhD dissertation. Applicants are expected to clearly demonstrate their aptitude and motivation for advanced study in molecular medicine and related areas.

The MD-PhD (Molecular Medicine) Program aims to train aspiring physician-scientists for careers dedicated to the advancement of health through biomedical research. The prescribed period of study is eight years, during which time the MD-PhD student is expected to satisfy all the course requirements of the UPCM Organ System Integrated (OSI) curriculum (i.e., the MD component of the Program) and also earn at least 44 credit units of graduate courses, including 16 credit units of core courses, 12 units of major courses, 4 units of cognates/electives and 12 credit units towards the PhD dissertation. A student is qualified to take the comprehensive examination upon completion of 32 units of graduate courses, inclusive of 16 units of core courses, subject to the required minimum general weighted average (GWA) as determined by the National Graduate Office for the Health Sciences (NGOHS). A student must satisfactorily pass the comprehensive examination before proceeding with the proposal, approval and conduct of dissertation research. He/she must satisfactorily defend his dissertation to an expert panel before submitting the final dissertation manuscript in accordance with NGOHS regulations. The graduate courses are typically completed during the first year of enrollment in the Program. Dissertation work may formally commence after completing the required basic science courses of the MD Program, such that the clinical courses may be completed after the dissertation requirements are fulfilled.

The conduct of biomedical research increasingly demands PhD-level training. Yet, pursuing a PhD separately from an MD entails many more years of training via two distinct programs completed in succession, and achieving coherent synergy between the two programs is challenging given their traditional differences in perspective. The MD-PhD (Molecular Medicine) Program thus aims to train aspiring physician-scientists for careers dedicated to the pursuit of basic and applied biomedical research with a strong translational character, towards the advancement of health from individual to global levels. Emphasis is placed on preparation to assume key leadership roles within the academic community as principal investigators and mentors to physician-scientists in training, so as to promote a self-sustaining process whereby new knowledge is continuously generated, applied and transmitted to meet emerging and anticipated health needs.

The MD-PhD Program is administered by the office of the UPCM Associate Dean for Academic Development (ADAD) in collaboration with the MD-PhD Program Committee, which comprises core faculty members based in the UPCM, the UP College of Public Health (CPH) and the UP Manila National Institutes of Health (NIH), particularly in the UPCM Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and of Pharmacology and Toxicology, the CPH Departments of Medical Microbiology and of Parasitology, and the NIH Institute of Human Genetics.

The most basic admission requirement is an outstanding scholastic record with a baccalaureate or higher (e.g., master’s, doctoral or other graduate) degree in a field relevant to health and biomedicine, preferably molecular biology and biotechnology or biochemistry. Applicants initially apply for admission into the Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program, with the option of explicitly indicating on their application forms their intent to apply for admission into the MD-PhD Program. From among the MD-PhD Program applicants who successfully qualify for admission into the MD Program, the MD- PhD Program Committee selects prospective candidates for admission to be interviewed for further screening on the basis of their submitted application documents, after which the final list of accepted MD-PhD Program applicants is determined in view of their aptitude and motivation for advanced study in molecular medicine and related areas in the health sciences.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to explore the possibility of admission into the MD-PhD Program as early as their interest warrants, even prior to filing an application for the MD Program, by contacting the faculty coordinator of the MD-PhD Program Committee through the office fo the UPCM ADAD. However, such preliminary communication should be understood as serving the purpose of clarification for the applicants rather than providing any guarantee of admission into the Program.

The core courses & their respective credit units are as follows:

Biochemistry 205 (Special Laboratory Techniques) is typically taken over a period of two consecutive semesters, for one credit unit in the first semester and two more credit units in the second semester, whereas all the other core courses each run for one semester. The list of approved additional graduate courses, which is expected to diversify as relevant new graduate courses are developed and offered, includes the following:

Biochemistry 240 (Advances in Biochemistry) is typically taken over a period of two consecutive semesters, for one credit unit in the first semester and two more credit units in the second semester, whereas all the other additional graduate courses each run for one semester.

Successful completion of 32 units of graduate courses including all core courses is a prerequisite to take the comprehensive examination, which in turn must be passed as a prerequisite for the formal proposal of the dissertation research.

All MD-PhD students are strongly encouraged to actively engage in biomedical research at the earliest possible time in order to explore various possibilities for prospective PhD dissertation projects, either to accomplish work that could be further developed as dissertation research or to at least inform subsequent decisions on the selection of dissertation topics. However, proposed dissertation research must be formally presented and approved, by way of preparing a written dissertation proposal that is successfully defended in an oral presentation. Such approval is necessary for authorization to conduct dissertation research and to qualify for funding in support thereof. Dissertation research activities may be conducted at host institutions abroad in cases where the requisite infrastructure and expertise have yet to be established in the local setting, provided that the necessary arrangements (e.g., for inter-institutional agreements and funding support) are finalized in a timely manner.

All the graduate courses are typically completed during the first year of enrollment in the MD-PhD Program, with the OSI-curriculum course IDC 211 (Research Methods 1) completed during the first semester of the said year. IDC 211, which is a course under Learning Unit III (LU III) of the OSI curriculum, entails the preparation and defense of a research project proposal, which is to be implemented and successfully completed in fulfillment of course requirements for IDC 211.1 (Research Methods 1 Project Implementation, also part of LU III). Apart from IDC 211, all other LU III courses (including IDC 211.1) are thus completed during the second year of enrollment in the MD- PhD Program, thereby providing an extended period for the conduct of research activities between IDC 211 and IDC 211.1. (IDC 211 is counted among the OSI courses rather than the graduate courses and hence is excluded from the computation of graduate-course credit units, although it entails two lecture -class hours per week and is therefore comparable to a course worth two credit units as regards time requirements.)

Accordingly, the following graduate course credit units (with those for core courses marked by asterisks) are expected to be earned during the first semester of the first year:

In addition, the following graduate-course credit units (with those for core courses marked by asterisks) are expected to be earned during the second semester of the first year:

The PhD can take on something of a mythic status. Are they only for geniuses? Do you have to discover something incredible? Does the qualification make you an academic? And are higher research degrees just for people who want to be academics?

PhD stands for Doctor of Philosophy. This is the highest level academic degrees that can be awarded. PhD is an abbreviation of the Latin term (Ph)ilosophiae (D)octor. Traditionally the term ‘philosophy’ does not refer to the subject but its original Greek meaning which roughly translates to ‘lover of wisdom’.

A typical PhD involves:

  • Carrying out a literature review (a survey of current scholarship in your field).
  • Conducting original research and collecting your results.
  • Producing a thesis that presents your conclusions.
  • Writing up your thesis and submitting it as a dissertation. Defending your thesis in an oral viva voce exam.

Your PhD can take you much further afield though. You may find yourself visiting archives or facilities to examine their data or look at rare source materials. You could even have the opportunity to spend an extended period ‘in residence’ at a research center or other institutions beyond your university.

Working with your supervisor .  All PhD projects are completed with the guidance of at least one academic supervisor. They will be your main point of contact and support throughout the PhD.

Your supervisor will be an expert in your general area of research, but they won’t have researched on your exact topic before (if they had, your project wouldn’t be original enough for a PhD).

As a PhD student you are now an independent and original scholar, pushing the boundaries of your field beyond what is currently known (and taught) about it. You are doing all of these for the first time;

The modern PhD is also viewed as a more flexible qualification. Not all doctorate graduates end up working in higher education. Many follow alternative careers that are either related to their subject of specialism or draw upon the advanced research skills their PhD has developed.

PhD programs have begun to reflect on this. Many now emphasize transferrable skills or include specific training units designed to help students communicate and apply their research beyond the university.

What all of this means is that very few PhD experiences are just about researching and writing up a thesis.

Doing this is very worthwhile, whatever your career plans. You will develop transferrable skills in public speaking and presenting, gain feedback on your results and begin to be recognized as an expert in your area. Conferences are also great places to network with other students and academics.

Publication .  As well as presenting your research, you may also have the opportunity to publish work in academic journals, books, or other media.

This can be a challenging process. Your work will be judged according to the same high standards as any other scholar’s and will normally go through extensive peer review processes.

But it is also highly rewarding. Seeing your work ‘in print’ is an incredible validation of your PhD research and a definite boost to your academic CV.

Public engagement and communication .  Academic work may be associated with the myth of the ‘ivory tower’ – an insular community of experts focusing on obscure topics of little interest outside the university. But this is far from the case.

Thankfully, there are plenty of opportunities to try your hand at public engagement as a PhD student. Universities are often involved in local events and initiatives to communicate the benefits of their research, ranging from workshops in local or international forums to public lectures and presentations.

Our PhD programs include structured training in order to help you with activities such as the above.

Your supervisor may also be able to help by identifying suitable conferences and public engagement opportunities, or by involving you in appropriate university events and public engagement initiatives.

In a nutshell, a doctorate degree:

Provides you with comprehensive research principles and methodologies.

Offers both theoretical and practical principles.

Advances your discipline knowledge.

Increases your specialized and/or cross-discipline skills.

Aligns your professional interests and goals.

Though distance learning is widely appealing, not all students thrive in online learning environments. To determine whether you should pursue your doctorate online, ask yourself the following:

  • What are your other obligations? If you are a parent or if you plan to keep a full-time job while enrolled, asynchronous online learning might provide a good fit. Asynchronous course delivery eliminates scheduled class sessions, allowing you to complete assignments on your schedule so you can better manage your commitments.
  • What’s your budget? Online learning is often more affordable than on-campus learning. Distance learners generally avoid campus-related costs like housing and transportation. Moreover, some public universities—which typically charge higher rates to out-of-state learners —allow online students to pay in-state or otherwise discounted tuition rates , regardless of their state residency status.
  • What’s your learning style? While online learning offers flexibility and affordability, it is not for everyone. Distance learners need a great deal of discipline, organization and time management skills. If you need additional structure to do your best, you might prefer a synchronous, hybrid or on-campus program.

There are two important types of college accreditation : institutional and programmatic.

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) and Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) oversee the third-party agencies that handle the institutional accreditation process. Accrediting agencies evaluate schools for the quality of their academics, finances and faculty, among other areas. You must be enrolled at an institutionally accredited college to qualify for federal student aid.

To check a school’s accreditation status, you can look at its website or visit the database on CHEA’s website .

Programmatic accreditation provides a similar vetting service, but for specific degree programs and departments. The importance of programmatic accreditation varies by field, but it is fairly relevant in business.

For management programs, you should keep an eye out for accreditation from one of three organizations:

  • The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs
  • The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business
  • The International Accreditation Council for Business Education

AACSB is not recognized by the ED or CHEA, but it is still widely respected in the business field and among the best-known business degree accreditors.

Consider Your Future Goals

An online Ph.D. in management can lead to high-level positions in academia or research. You may also be able to find work as an economist or a consultant.

In general, advanced business these positions involve analysis, research and scholarship. If you want to work as a C-level executive or entrepreneur, you might be better off getting an M.B.A. degree in your preferred business subfield. M.B.A. programs focus more on applied, practical business skills as opposed to theory.

If you know you want to work in research or academia, you should choose a Ph.D. in management that requires a dissertation. A dissertation will give you a chance to try out research and scholarship and perhaps even contribute to the field by publishing your findings in a journal. This work can help you land a job as a professor or researcher once you graduate.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Per-credit tuition rates for the 10 qualifying Ph.D. programs in our guide range from $450 to $1,575. Over the course of a typical 60-credit Ph.D. program, this translates to between $27,000 and $94,500 in total tuition. That’s no small investment.

To defray the cost of your graduate education, you should first fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is the gateway to federal student aid opportunities like loans, grants and scholarships. Universities and other aid providers may also use FAFSA data to determine their awards. Additionally, you can pursue financial aid through private lenders and third-party organizations.
