Nearly all members of the 118th Congress have a bachelor’s degree – and most have a graduate degree, too

More than nine-in-ten U.S. representatives and senators have a college degree, continuing a decadeslong trend. In the 118th Congress, 94% of representatives and all but one senator hold at least a bachelor’s degree, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. House and Senate biographical data .

A line graph showing that almost every member of the 118th Congress holds a college degree

The share of voting members of Congress with a college education has steadily increased over time. In the 79th Congress (1945-46), for instance,  56% of House members and 75% of senators  had a bachelor’s degree or higher. By the 103rd Congress (1993-94), this share had risen to 90% of members or more in both chambers. In each Congress since then, nine-in-ten or more members have held at least a bachelor’s degree.

The share of members in each chamber with at least a bachelor’s degree peaked in the 116th Congress (2019-20), when 96% of representatives and all 100 senators had one. Although both shares have remained high, they have slightly declined since then.

This analysis includes the 534 voting members of Congress seated as of Feb. 2, 2023.

This analysis builds on earlier Pew Research Center work to analyze the educational attainment of lawmakers in the U.S. Congress. To determine the educational background of lawmakers in the 118th Congress, we used U.S. House and Senate biographical data . Data on the educational attainment of U.S. adults overall comes from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Our analysis reflects the 534 voting members of Congress as of Feb. 2, 2023, not including one vacant seat in the House following  the death of Democratic Virginia Rep. Donald McEachin . Independent members of Congress are counted with the party they caucus with.

Those with at least a bachelor’s degree include a small number of members who do not hold a bachelor’s degree but have an advanced degree in a field that does not require one. For example, Republican Rep. Diana Harshbarger of Tennessee completed some undergraduate coursework at East Tennessee State University before going on to receive a doctorate in pharmacy from Mercer University.

In total counts of 118th Congress’ most-attended universities, lawmakers with multiple graduate degrees are counted once with each of the schools they have a graduate degree from; medical residencies are not included.

In the House, nearly two-thirds of representatives (64%) have a graduate degree. Five representatives (1%) have an associate degree but no bachelor’s. Another 22 members (5%) do not have a degree. This group includes one member who has a professional certification: Democrat Cori Bush of Missouri has a registered nursing diploma.

Among the 100 current senators, 78 have at least one graduate degree. Republican Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma is the lone senator without at least a bachelor’s degree. He holds an associate degree from Oklahoma State University of Technology. Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, earned a doctorate in medicine from Duke University Medical School but does not hold a bachelor’s .

A chart showing that members of the 118th Congress are far more likely than Americans overall to have a bachelor's or graduate degree

The educational attainment of the current Congress far outpaces that of the overall U.S. population. In 2021, around four-in-ten American adults ages 25 and older (38%) had a bachelor’s degree or more education, including 14% who had a graduate degree, according to  U.S. Census Bureau data . Another 10% held an associate degree, while the largest share (52%) did not have a college or associate degree.

The educational attainment of members of Congress differs somewhat by political party, at least in the House. While 95% of Democrats and 93% of Republicans in the House hold at least a bachelor’s degree, Democrats are more likely than Republicans to have completed a graduate degree (73% vs. 55%). Fourteen of the 22 representatives without a college degree are Republicans. In the Senate, similar shares in both parties have undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Some universities are especially well represented in Congress. For example, about three dozen members of the House (9%) have at least one degree from Harvard University. In the Senate, 13% of senators have at least one degree from Harvard, while 9% have a degree from Yale University and 7% have at least one degree from Georgetown University.

House members are more likely than senators to have completed a degree at a college or university in the state they represent. About two-thirds of representatives (64%) have at least one such degree, and 21% received both an undergraduate and a graduate degree from an institution in their state. Among senators, nearly half (48 of 100) have at least one degree from a school in the state they represent, including 20 senators who have both a bachelor’s and an advanced degree from a school in the state they currently represent.

An online graduate program at UD just ranked among nation's top-20: Education roundup

phd degrees in bedfordshire university

Death, school taxes, University of Delaware in the news.

These could be considered the new constants. Tuesday is set to bring Brandywine School District to a referendum vote — the first of six school districts headed to the polls this spring alone, looking to increase revenue, fuel projects and keep pace. We made a breakdown for keeping track of upcoming school funding referenda .

Over in Newark, the University of Delaware is celebrating new rankings for its online programs.

This joins a turbulent last week of announcing new budget tightening measures , alongside bracing for discussion of a possible " per-student tax " and lease tax on UD being considered by the city of Newark.

In other news, the state is looking for sponsors to help feed kids in need this summer. And, DCAD students just landed an impressive new technology center.

In this weekly roundup, we'll catch you up on these and other education updates you may have missed:

University of Delaware online graduate program ranks among nation's top 20

Several graduate programs at UD just landed top spots in national rankings of higher education — and this time they're all online.

The university's online master's in education ranked No. 19, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2024 Best Online Programs , showing out among over 300 schools. Its online MBA programs moved up four spots to No. 29 out of 345 programs, "eclipsing other Philadelphia region business schools," the university said in a recent press release.

In a new ranking for Delaware's largest university, UD’s online master’s in information technology programs ranked No. 50. UD's online master’s in engineering programs ranked No. 65, and the online master’s in nursing programs ranked No. 133.

"A graduate degree is a valuable and desirable credential in many fields," said Louis Rossi, dean of the Graduate College and vice provost for graduate and professional education, in a statement.

U.S. News' general methodology has come under fire as of late. Last year, more than a dozen medical schools and more than 40 law schools ranked in the span of a few months announced they would no longer provide information to the outlet, which has ranked such programs since 1983. Debate there continues.

Regardless, as Rossi's statement continued: "It's great to have our efforts recognized in this way. … We expect to see our rankings continue to rise as we continue to devote ourselves to online learners through exceptional programs that serve them where they are.”

Delaware College of Art and Design marks grand opening of student tech center

"Connecting exploration and education, fostering collaboration and experimentation" — the Delaware College of Art and Design has launched its new Student Technology Center.

And from 3D printing to laser cutting, to computers, cameras and VR with gravity sketch modeling software: It sounds like a creative's paradise.

"The Student Technology Center is a testament to DCAD's commitment to providing cutting-edge resources for our students, cultivating a dynamic environment for creativity, collaboration and innovation," President Jean Dahlgren said in a press release ahead of the recent opening, also noting the project's fuel in a grant from the Crystal Trust Foundation.

A multifunctional space, including "The Vault," is set to serve as a gathering spot for students, with furniture, a large smart TV, an Oculus 3D VR system and open computers. A writer’s studio area also joins several features looking to foster some creative expression.

Department of Education seeks sponsors, sites for feeding kids this summer

Summer means no school, right? But for many students, school is also the one place for consistent meals.

One program targets children in lower-income areas each year, aiming to ensure they have meals during these warmer months. Right now, that Summer Food Service Program is seeking sponsors and meal sites to provide them.

Sponsors are reimbursed for all meals served free at approved sites, per the federally funded program operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture nationally.

Who should hear this?

  • Sponsors : Sponsors can be units of local government, camps, schools or private nonprofit organizations.
  • Meal sites : Individual sites like camps, housing complexes, community centers, parks and homes are eligible. Sponsors would prepare and deliver the meals to the site (some locations may be served by a food truck, depending on availability). A site supervisor is required.
  • Children : Those 18 and younger can receive free meals and snacks. Meals and snacks also are available to persons with disabilities, over age 18, who participate in school programs.

Sponsors and sites will receive training and continued support from DDOE. More details on eligibility are available online .

Milltown school shows up for Delaware in national vocabulary competition

More than 380,000 students, from some 2,100 K-12 schools across the United States and Canada, battled for "word domination," in the ninth annual Vocabulary Bowl late last year.

Now, the results are in. St. John the Beloved Catholic School in Milltown proved to be Delaware's state champion, mastering over 6,000 words throughout the competition, according to Vocabulary.com.

The platform tracks the progress of participating teachers and students. Students enrolled in classes sign in online and master as many words as they can through learning activities on the website. As the site sees it, the Vocabulary Bowl allows educators to "personalize instruction, boost literacy skills and inject competitive spirit into education."

The next bowl is already in season .

On 23 and 24 April, XJTLU held its 2024 master’s and doctoral graduation ceremony, witnessing over 2,300 graduate students completing their studies. The graduates were awarded master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Liverpool and received master’s and doctoral graduate certificates from XJTLU.

There were a total of 2,285 master’s graduates and 28 doctoral graduates. Of the master’s students, 301 received degrees with distinction for outstanding academic performance.

Professor Youmin Xi, Executive President of XJTLU, extended congratulations, noting that the personal development the University fosters will be key to the graduates’ success. He said: “The degrees you’ve received merely signify that you have been studying and researching a specific field on a slightly deeper level; they are not a guarantee of your survival and development in society.

“Your competitiveness stems from your ability to innovate and think critically, which will enable you to find creative solutions to new problems and challenges,” he continued. “It lies in your ability to rationally analyse and extract valuable data amidst the flood of information, facilitating continuous improvement and innovation in your work.”

“In addition, your competitiveness comes from a global perspective, diverse viewpoints, a grand vision, and a sense of social responsibility,” he said. “They will empower you to navigate through uncertainty and grasp trends to make informed decisions. Furthermore, your competitiveness is derived from self-management, research-led work, communication and collaboration with both humans and machines, and a commitment to lifelong learning.”

Independent research exploration

One of this year’s graduates, Sifan Song, completed his PhD in Mathematical Sciences from the School of AI and Advanced Computing at XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang). He said the research atmosphere at XJTLU encourages students to demonstrate their independent research abilities. “In such an environment, I could immerse myself fully in research and tap into my research potential,” he said.

Song’s research focuses on the deep integration of medical imaging and artificial intelligence, and his goal is to improve the accuracy and efficiency of medical diagnosis through artificial intelligence.

After graduation, Song will go to Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States to continue his postdoctoral research. Massachusetts General Hospital is the earliest and largest teaching affiliate hospital of Harvard Medical School.

Spreading XJTLU’s educational philosophy

Qiao Kang, a graduate of the MA Child Development and Family Education programme from the Academy of Future Education at XJTLU, hopes to bring XJTLU’s educational philosophy to more places and help students grow into well-rounded individuals who pursue their interests and talents.

Kang previously worked in early childhood education institutions and, with a firm passion for education and a thirst for professional knowledge, embarked on the path of further study at XJTLU.

Kang actively participated in the University’s social responsibility projects. “Through participating in community service projects, I encountered educational demands from different social groups, which not only honed my practical abilities but also enhanced my problem-solving skills.”

PhD fees-funded studentships

The Institute for Sport and Physical Activity Research (ISPAR) at the University of Bedfordshire is pleased to offer PhD opportunities. The studentship will cover doctoral tuition fees for three years of study.

New opportunities are typically advertised 4-6 months before the start of the academic year.

Postgraduate Supervision

All our staff are research active and welcome applications for postgraduate supervision. The following are a list of topic areas that are of particular interest. We welcome self-funded students or those supported by their workplace or industry. We also welcome organisations who wish to fund a postgraduate student to conduct a bespoke piece of research to enhance their service, evaluate their programme(s) or to develop new knowledge in a related area.

To find information on fees and costs to fund a PGR student, visit the page RGS Research fees . Advice on stipends to support the living costs of a postgraduate research student if you are a sponsor can be found at UK Research and Innovation

The School of Sport Science and Physical Activity also offers a range of taught Masters courses

Suggested topic areas

Research area: The links between physical activity, sport, health and mental wellbeing Supervisor: Dr Angel Chater

Evidence confirms that physical activity can have a significant positive impact on both physical and psychological health, to include anxiety and depression. It can also manage emotional responses such as aggression and delinquency in young people. We are building research in the area of physical activity, health and mental wellbeing and interested in the supervision of projects that aim to understand the benefits of physical activity to both young people and adults. This could be through team sport or individualised physical activity. We are also interested in the unmet mental health needs of those involved in elite sports, particularly during and after a period of injury and potential interventions to address relevant issues identified.

Research area: The effects of breakfast consumption and omission on energy balance and metabolic health in children and adolescents Supervisor: Dr Julia Zakrzewski-Fruer

A large body of evidence has demonstrated that regular breakfast consumption is associated with a variety of nutritional and lifestyle-related health outcomes in large diverse samples of young people, which may prevent weight gain and reduce risk factors for chronic disease. However, this evidence is largely cross-sectional and does not allow us to establish cause and effect. The advertised opportunity will focus on conducting experimental research to identify whether breakfast consumption can help to prevent weight gain, increase physical activity levels and improve metabolic health in children and adolescents. This research can be conducted in the form of a three-year PhD or a one-year MSc by Research. The specific nature of the project is open for discussion, particularly for those applicants interested in the PhD opportunity. If you are interested, please contact Dr Julia Zakrzewski-Fruer by email [email protected]
