Please see below for details of currently advertised PhD and Research Master's funding and scholarship opportunities offered at UCD or by funding agencies. 

Please note that this does not represent an exhaustive list and students are advised to contact the UCD School in which they are interested in studying to ask about current funding possibilities. You can also find helpful guidance on PhD applications in the 'Planning' phase of the UCD PhD Lifecycle . 

In Session 2023/2024, awards of up to €6,000 financed from the Lord Edward Fitzgerald Memorial Fund may be offered to high-quality applications in one or more of the following areas of graduate research, for the purpose of enabling overseas study designed to advance the candidate’s research programme:

• Irish History
• Biotechnology
• Business Studies
• Environmental Studies
• Transportation
• Architecture (Housing)
• Engineering (Electronic) (Preference will be given to electronic engineering but applications in other categories of engineering will be considered also).

Travel and overseas study must be completed by 1 January 2025 .

The application for the scholarship must include:

• a detailed explanation of how it would be beneficial for the applicant to undertake research overseas, in the context of their graduate studies
• an outline of the planned work programme and timescale
• an indicative budget and planned sources of funding
• academic record to date
• a reference from the UCD research supervisor.

Where relevant, the student is responsible for obtaining the permission of the university/supervisor/research institute that he or she proposes to attend.

Applicants are required to be registered for a higher degree at University College Dublin, and must have been born in or have been ordinarily resident in Ireland for at least ten years; other things being equal, preference will be given to those candidates who are natives of or residing in the County of Dun Laoghaire–Rathdown.

Evaluation criteria:

• character and academic calibre of applicant
• nature and subject of research visit in context of Applicant’s programme
• availability of alternate funds
• resident in or native of the County.

Evaluation is conducted by a Panel comprising nominees both internal and external to UCD.

The Lord Edward Fitzgerald Medal will be awarded to scholars who satisfactorily demonstrate a successful overseas study. No request for additional funding can be entertained.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a fully funded (fees and stipend), 4-year full-time PhD position at the UCD Clinical Research Centre, University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland.

This project seeks to identify and validate biomarkers which can be used as endpoints in clinical trials of new medicines in lung fibrosis. Endpoints are measures that can be objectively used to measure whether a new treatment is beneficial. Endpoints must be reproducible, represent the biological response and be sensitive to treatment. Endpoints are critical components of therapeutic development as they provide the means to measure efficacy. Endpoints come in multiple forms, including clinical signs and imaging. In this project however we will seek to identify molecular mediators which are useful as endpoints.

The PhD candidate will use combined in vitro and ex vivo models of lung fibrosis to identify candidate endpoints, by proteomic, transcriptomic and genomic profiling. The candidate will work with models for lung fibrosis including cell culture, flow cytometry, lung on a chip and precision-cut lung slices to study different pathways in lung fibrosis. Candidate endpoints identified through will be validated in ex vivo organ models where response to treatment will be assayed.

  Qualifications/Expertise

Applicants should have a 1 st or 2:1 Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical or Health Sciences or a related discipline. The ideal candidate should have experience in as many of the following techniques as possible: mammalian cell culture; molecular biology; protein and gene analysis; immunohistochemistry. The candidate should have excellent communication and organisational skills; be highly motivated and have strong written, oral and interpersonal skills. The candidate should be able to work independently and as a part of team.

The PhD studentship covers tuition fees and a tax-free stipend of €22,000 per year. An annual allowance is provided for conference attendance.

Fully funded PhD Positions in Cancer Research #META-CHIP

Development of a lung metastasis-on-a-chip model for osteosarcoma as a biomimetic testing platform for drug discovery and therapeutic innovation

About this project: Osteosarcoma is a highly aggressive bone cancer largely affecting children. Treatment is often radical and debilitating, and despite the clinical urgency for newer more effective therapies, there has been no change in treatment options since the introduction of chemotherapy in the 1970s. As result the current 5-year survival rate in aggressive forms of osteosarcoma is still below 20%. Accelerating cures for those poor outcome patients remains a challenge and this in part is due to a lack of accurate osteosarcoma preclinical models. Traditionally, two dimensional (2D) cell culture and animals have been used as primary cancer drug development models. Although 2D cell culture is relatively easy to perform, it fails to mimic the 3D complexity of the primary tumour microenvironment. On the other hand, animal models for drug testing are labour and time intensive, costly, and most significantly, often yield untranslatable results due to the physiological differences between humans and animals, with estimated drug failure rates as high as 90%. Despite this, animal models remain the main pre-clinical model for validating potential drug candidates for osteosarcoma patients.

Organ-on-a-chip technologies using patient-specific cells, represent a promising alternative as they allow for controllable cell culture within an organotypic microarchitectural environment, providing a simple yet more physiologically relevant platform for drug screening than traditional cell culture/animal models. Specifically, for rare paediatric diseases like osteosarcoma where full clinical trials are challenging, they provide a repeatable, cost-effective, medium-throughput alternative for drug screening. This emerging field hit a major milestone in December 2022, when the US Congress approved the FDA Modernization Act 2.0 allowing the use of organ-on-chip data for drug discovery instead of animal models.

This clearly indicates the immense potential organ-on-chip devices will have in the future for treating rare diseases like osteosarcoma, further emphasising the distinct critical need for the development of the proposed device. This project aims to develop a human systemic lung metastasis-on-a-chip model for osteosarcoma. Once developed, META-CHIP can be incorporated into the drug development pipeline from early drug discovery to preclinical screening, testing, and translation of new drugs for bone cancers, bridging the gap between animal studies and human clinical trials. As part of the PhD programme, you will receive training in organoid culture, hydrogel synthesis, 3D bioprinting, organ-on-chip design, advanced microscopy, and molecular biology analysis.

Two four-year PhD studentships are funded by European Research Council Starting Grant (#META-CHIP). These studentships include full tuition, a PhD stipend of €25,000 per annum (tax free), and a research budget to cover research costs associated with the project.

Students will be enrolled onto UCD’s structured PhD programme , which includes some taught elements and transferrable skills training, providing an excellent foundation for a research career.

About the research team: Dr Fiona Freeman is an Ad Astra Fellow, a Conway Fellow, a funded investigator in the SFI Research Centre in Curam and Advanced Materials and Bioengineering Research, and a PI within UCD Centre for Biomedical Engineering and Trinity Centre for Bioengineering. Dr Freeman leads a multidisciplinary research group investigating the use of innovative biomedical engineering techniques to better understand and develop novel therapeutics to treat paediatric bone cancer, Osteosarcoma.

Minimum Qualifications: A Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Molecular Bioengineering, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Biomedical Sciences or a closely related area. Candidates should enjoy working as part of a team and have a keen interest in biomedical device design.

Who are these scholarships for.

Students starting their PhD in September 2024. The Hardiman PhD Scholarships are fully funded for four years, with a stipend of €22,000 p.a. plus tuition fee waiver. A: No, as per the https://www.universityofgalway.ie/hardiman-scholarships/ webpage, it states: ‘ Who are these scholarship for? Students commencing their PhD in September 2024. Also under the eligibility section on https://www.universityofgalway.ie/hardiman-scholarships/eligibility it states ‘ Applications will not be accepted from persons currently registered as PhD students or who previously were awarded a PhD.’

Q: I wish to undertake a part-time PhD programme, can I apply for a Hardiman Scholarship?

A: No,  Applicant's Guide  (available on the  webpage ) 'Scholarships will be awarded only to those who are admitted to full-time structured PhDs in the University of Galway.'

Q: I wish to undertake a PhD in the Burren College of Art, can I apply for a Hardiman Scholarship?

A: No, the University of Galway accredit programmes from the BCA only. PhD candidates can therefore pursue a PhD in BCA, but are not eligible for University of Galway Scholarship opportunities, including Hardiman Scholarships, QA200 and QA203 etc.

Q: How can I apply for a Hardiman Scholarship?

A: If you wish to apply for Hardiman PhD Scholarship, please find full details on how to apply and required documentation on the https://www.universityofgalway.ie/hardiman-scholarships/ .

Q: What does the Hardiman PhD Scholarship cover and for how long?

A: The Hardiman PhD Scholarships provides funded for four years to successful applicants wishing to undertake a structured PhD from the coming September. It covers the student’s stipend €22,000 p.a. plus tuition fee waiver for 4 years period. It does not cover the student levy or provide a budget for consumables or travel etc.

Q: Is there an application fee for submission of Hardiman PhD Scholarship application?

A: No, there is also no fee to apply for a Hardiman PhD Scholarship. Please follow the guidance given in the Applicant's Guide  (available on the webpage ) which all applicants  must  read prior to completing the application form and also what is noted in the application and other forms. Please note : there is an application fee when applying for PhD Programme

Q: Do I need to submit an online Structured PhD application as well as the Hardiman Scholarship application?

A: Yes, HR Scholar only deals with the Hardiman PhD Scholarship application form/process. To apply for the Structured PhD programme is a separate process. You may wish to apply for both at same time or you may wish to wait and see if you are successful in getting a Hardiman PhD Scholarship before applying for your PhD programme. Noting if you were successful in getting awarded a Hardiman PhD Scholarship it would be subject to meeting the entry requirements for a PhD at University of Galway and in the College of XXX ( via applying online for and being accepted onto Structured PhD course ). This is something you may wish to discuss with your potential supervisor. It is important to apply for the PhD programme in good time if you need to apply for a visa as it can take a number of weeks to get outcome from PhD application and then a number of weeks to get outcome of visa application. This all needs to be completed before the 1 st September of coming academic year, if you are in receipt of a Hardiman scholarship.  

Q: When I apply for the Hardiman Scholarship does this include consideration for the Structured PhD progamme I wish to do?

No, applying for your Structured PhD Programme is a separate application process to the applying for Hardiman PhD Scholarship.

• To apply for your PhD programme, you first need to make contact with potential supervisor(s). Please go to https://www.universityofgalway.ie/findasupervisor/ in the first instance and make direct contact with potential supervisor in your area of research, they will then advise you how to apply for PhD programme online and discuss applying for the Hardiman PhD Scholarship to support your PhD studies, as well as any other funding opportunities that they are aware of at the time.  
• For the Hardiman Scholarship, all details are on the Hardiman PhD Scholarship webpage  in regards to applying and what is required. As part of the application process, you do need to make contact with potential supervisor and they have to complete the supervisor form (as per guidance given) and submit to [email protected] before the closing date/time.

Q: Can Hardiman Scholarship applicant apply for their PhD before or while submitting their Hardiman Scholarship applicant (which are two a separate processes)?

A: You can submit your Hardiman PhD Scholarship application without having started/completed your Structured PhD application. These are two separate application processes.

If you are successful in getting Hardiman Scholarship offer it will be subject to meeting the entry requirements for a PhD at University of Galway and in the College of XXXX. If you accept the offer, you will be advised at this point ‘ If you have not already applied for the Structured PhD programme via the online application system   you should do so now. This is a separate process to the scholarship offer.’

Q: When applying for a Hardiman PhD Scholarship, am I also applying for the PhD programme?

A: No, the PhD programme application process, this is a separate process to that of the Hardiman PhD Scholarship application process. You would have to discuss with the Postgraduate Admissions office or your proposed supervisor. HR Scholar has no involvement in this process. If you are successful in getting a Hardiman PhD Scholarship offer it will be subject to meeting the entry requirements for a PhD at the University of Galway and in the relevant College e.g. College of Arts, Social Sciences & Celtic Studies. If you accept the offer, you will be advised at this point ‘If you have not already applied for the Structured PhD programme via the online application system you should do so now. This is a separate process to the scholarship offer.’

Q: What are the rules for including endnotes and bibliography with the application?  May I include it on the application form or should I put them in a separate document?

A: As per the  Applicant's Guide  (available on the webpage ) Step 2: Application 1. A complete Hardiman scholarship application requires completion of the application form, the supervisor form and two academic reference forms. Non-adherence to the word count or page limit may result in the application or part of it, not being assessed. As per Hardiman Application Form – you as the application needs to decide what you input in section 5 Personal Research Statement and should stick with the max 1,000 words. If you feel endnotes and bibliography would be relevant, and do not want to include them in the 1,000 words under section 5, you could include under section 6. Please provide any other relevant information of your application.

Q: Can I input e.g. appendices including plots, diagrams and references in the personal research statement section or will this affect the word count?

A: The personal research statement allows a maximum of 1,000 words. There are no word limits for the sections Research Experience and Any Other Information . If you feel that inputting e.g. appendices including plots, diagrams and references, will support your application and falls under ‘other relevant information’ you can input in section 6 of the application.

Q: At what stage of the application process do applicants have to provide transcripts of academic record and if relevant, qualifications in the English language e.g. TOEFL, IELTS?

A: As per the application, it states

Please note that you may be asked to provide transcripts of your academic record and qualifications in the English language should you progress to the later stages of the selection process.

This normally happens post interview stage. If the applicant is successfully awarded and accepts scholarship, it is subject to meeting the entry requirements for a PhD at University of Galway and in the relevant College you are applying under e.g. College of Business, Public Policy and Law. This process will include requirement for submission of transcripts and certificate confirming English language competency e.g. TOEFL, IELTS. If you have other forms of evidence outside of what is listed on the English Language Requirements as per webpage   https://www.universityofgalway.ie/international-students/studyinireland/entryrequirements/ , you will have to check with your supervisor/relevant College office within University of Galway.

Q: Is it mandatory for academic references to only be submitted by someone in academia as part of application?

A: No, as per  Applicant's Guide  (available on the webpage ) ‘Two academic reference forms are required that indicate your academic suitability and potential to undertake the PhD.’ As per the reference form : To the Referee: Please complete this form to indicate the Applicant’s academic suitability and potential to undertake PhD research in the University of Galway.

A referee can be, as per the form:

Academic – Lecturer/Mentor/Advisor ☐          Employer ☐              Other ☐    

Therefore, an employer/other, if relevant, can provide a reference for you to indicate your academic suitability and potential to undertake the PhD

Q: Can I check with HR Scholar if my supporting forms were submitted by my proposed supervisor and two referees?

A: No. It is expected that applicants check directly with proposed supervisor and referees if they have submitted their completed forms. As per Application Form and the  Applicant's Guide  (available on the webpage ) “Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure that the proposed supervisor submits the completed ‘ University of Galway Supervisor Form’ and that Referees submit the completed ‘ Academic Reference Forms’ to [email protected] by 17:00 (IRISH TIME) Friday, 9 February 2024 .”

There is a large volume of emails with queries and forms coming in to [email protected] on a regular basis. HR Scholar will not be in the position to check and reply to individual applicants in regards to what supporting forms are submitted or not. After the closing date and once all emails and forms processed, applicants will be notified if their application is complete and going forward for assessment or that their application was ineligible or incomplete.

Q: Can the applicant re-submit application if they made error on their original application?

A: No, the first application submitted to [email protected] is final . There can be no re-submission, or changes after your submission.

Q: Can my proposed supervisor be one of my referees? 

A: No, please read the  Applicant's Guide  (available on the  webpage )

Q: Can the applicant submit forms on behalf of the supervisor and/or references?

A: No, any support forms submitted by the applicant will not be considered. As per https://www.universityofgalway.ie/hardiman-scholarships Applicants  must  read the  Applicant's Guide  (available on the webpage )prior to completing the application form. Per the Applicant’s Guide and guidance given in the individual forms, the proposed supervisor must submit their supervisor form to [email protected] and the each of the two referees must submit their reference forms to [email protected] directly.

Q: Can the applicant, supervisor, or referees request extension to closing date deadline to submit their relevant forms?

A: No, the same deadline applies to all. No extensions can be given. Any forms submitted/received by [email protected] will not be considered.

Q: When will I hear back to confirm if my application is complete and going forward for assessment?

A: Once HR Scholar has finished going through all emails and forms process (normally late/end of February), all applicants will be notified of outcome e.g. completed application (includes supervisor form and two references) gone to next stage of assessment or incomplete/ineligible application

Q: When will interviews take place?

A: Please see Hardiman PhD Scholarships webpage https://www.universityofgalway.ie/hardiman-scholarships/timeline/ for period interviews are scheduled to take place below. If your application was confirmed as complete and gone forward for assessment you should hear if you are being called for interview or unsuccessful around this time.

Q: If unsuccessful, can I get feed back on my application and/or interview?

A: Feedback on interview or application is not provided. As other scholarship/grant processes and assessments are different we have found in the past that providing feedback does not help with other competitions or indeed if re-applying for Hardiman Scholarship in future years. We would advise that you work with and get guidance from your supervisor on future application forms.

Q: Am I eligible to be a supervisor for a Hardiman PhD Scholar?

A: Eligibility requires: 2.   Supervisors of Hardiman PhD Scholars must;  i) Be eligible to be a primary supervisor at University of Galway. You will find the  eligibility  requirements in the  University Guidelines for Research Degree Programmes , 3.2 Supervisory Arrangements 

ii) Have a record of successful PhD supervision or be in the process of supervising and/or have availed of training on research supervision. 

University Guidelines for Research Degree Programmes , section 3 requires:

As a postgraduate research project supervisor, you should meet the following criteria: 

• be an active scholar and researcher with good records of achievement and publication 

• have a PhD in a suitable academic area, or an equivalent record of achievement.

3.2.1. The College, on the nomination of the Head of School, will assign a permanent member of university academic staff to be the primary supervisor of the candidate’s research.

You may wish to seek confirmation from your School and College on 2i, as it is the HoS and College that are required to confirm such in any PhD admissions process. You will need to confirm your eligibility under 2ii in any submission of a supervisor form.

Q: I have a current self-funded PhD student under my supervision, can they apply for a Hardiman Scholarship?

A: No, as per the https://www.universityofgalway.ie/hardiman-scholarships webpage, it states: ‘ Who are these scholarship for? Students commencing their PhD in September 2024. Also under the eligibility section on https://www.universityofgalway.ie/hardiman-scholarships/eligibility/ it states ‘Applications will not be accepted from persons currently registered as PhD students or who previously were awarded a PhD.’

Q: Can proposed supervisor be one of the referees for application?

A: No, the proposed supervisor cannot be one of the referees.

Government of Ireland – International Education Scholarships 2023

The Higher Education Authority (HEA) is pleased to issue the 2023 Call under the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships Programme. Under the initiative 60 scholarships will be provided for one year study at Masters or PhD levels to successful candidates who have an offer of a place at an eligible Irish higher education institution.

The offer is open to students from non-EU/EEA countries and is applicable to all fields of study.

Students who are successful will receive:

• A €10,000 stipend for one year’s study
• A full fee waiver of all tuition and other registration costs at the higher education institution

Applications can be submitted via the online portal  here .

The deadline for the submission of applications is 5pm (Irish Time) 24 March 2023

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at DCU is offering four fully-funded four year PhD interdisciplinary scholarships under the theme of AI & Society, to commence in September 2023. The Graduate Studies Office administers a DCU Postgraduate Research Conference and Travel Grant . Each postgraduate research student, full-time or part-time, can apply in the period of his or her studentship for a Conference and Travel Grant from the DCU Research Committee. The scheme is administered through the Graduate Studies Office (GSO), based in GLA.LG13 in the McNulty Building, Glasnevin Campus. Further information is available at the Graduate Studies Office scholarships page . 

The Faculty Research Committee allocates some funds to administer a competitive Journal Publication Scheme , a call for which is issued normally at the end of October or beginning of November.  The scheme is available to research students in their 3rd or later year in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, DCU.  The scheme provides support for research leading to publication in a SCOPUS-ranked journal. The article can be sole-authored by the student or co-authored with a member of DCU staff, most typically but not exclusively a student’s supervisor.  Items supported could include fieldwork; archive / research travel; conference dissemination; data generation.  Depending on the budget allocation and number of applicants the maximum value of any single award can change but generally it will be no more than €1,000.

The Irish Research Council (IRC) normally runs a competitive scheme annually for PhD scholarships. If you are interested in applying to this scheme, you should first contact a prospective supervisor in the relevant School. Existing PhD students should discuss applications with their supervisor. For further information on this scheme, see: IRC Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme .

IRC Applications

All research students in receipt of a faculty or school funded scholarship must apply to the Irish Research Council’s Postgraduate Research scheme. The Associate Dean for Research facilitates a workshop for applicants to this scheme in October each year.  If applicants are successful in securing an award from the IRC the following information is relevant:

• Students receive confirmation directly from the IRC re award and contract.
• Research funds are managed by the student and supervisor in line with IRC contract.
• The student's Supervisor receives an email from DCU Finance Office detailing the Project subcost.
• This new subcost is set up specifically to manage your award and the Supervisor needs to complete the 'hierarchy' setup to enable transactions.
• The associated scholarship stipend is processed via Faculty office and GSO.
• Funds can be drawn down by purchasing materials through the Purchase order process (funds taken directly from subcost) or reclaiming expenses using the NIER process or the  Core system (if you have access).  Your Supervisor is the approver of your expenses and all expenditure must be approved prior to purchase.

Claiming Expenses

Students in receipt of a scholarship from the IRC or schools may be entitled to claim expenses depending on the terms and conditions of your contract or scholarship letter e.g. IRP or visa costs, equipment. To claim your expenses you must complete a Non Invoice Expenditure Requisition Form available via your School Assistant.  Authorisation of the expenditure is the responsibility of your Supervisor (IRC costs),  the Head of School (IRP or visa costs), or Faculty Research Administrator (faculty granted research awards) depending on the expense and the account being charged.  If you are unsure, your School Assistant will advise you. Return the completed form along with original receipts to your School Assistant. 

Purchase order process (IRC Awardees only)

If you want to purchase items such as software, laptops etc. you can do so by using the University's financial system, Agresso.  The supplier e.g. Dell, may already be set up as a supplier on this system so all you need to do is send the following details to the School Assistant:

• what you want to purchase,
• who you want to purchase from,
• the cost ex. VAT,
• the VAT rate
• your IRC subcost to charge the expense to.

This will generate a purchase order (PO) which you can send to the supplier.  The supplier should quote this PO number on their invoice which they send directly to [email protected] . When the invoice is approved by the Faculty Office, payment is issued within the next week.

Government of Ireland Scholarship 2024-2025 is a funded scholarship for international students. This scholarship is only offered for postgraduate studies. Eligibility Criteria for Government of Ireland Scholarship

To be eligible for Master’s and Doctoral Scholarship Presented by Government of Ireland in All disciplines, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Required Languages:  English
• Eligible Countries:  All World Countries
• Applicant must have a first class or upper second class honours bachelor’s, or the (equivalent) degree. If undergraduate examination results are not known at the time of application, the Council may make a provisional offer of a scholarship on condition that the scholar’s bachelor’s, or the equivalent, degree result is a first class or upper second-class honours. If a scholar does not have a first class or upper second-class honours bachelor’s, or the equivalent, degree, they must possess a master’s degree. The Council’s determination of an applicant’s eligibility on these criteria is final.
• Applicant must not have had two previous unsuccessful applications to the scheme, including strategic partner themes within the scheme.
• Applicant must be a new entrant to the degree for which they are to receive Council funding and have been formally accepted by the relevant department or school.
• Applicants applying for a research master’s scholarship, must not currently hold, or have previously held, a Council Postgraduate Scholarship
• Applicants applying for a PhD degree scholarship, must not currently hold or have previously held, any Council Postgraduate Scholarship other than those which would enable them to obtain a research master’s degree.
• Applicants will fall under one of two categories based on nationality and residency.
• For category I, applicants must meet BOTH of the following criteria: be a citizen of a member state of the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland AND have been ordinarily resident in an EEA member state or Switzerland for a continuous period of 3 of the 5 years preceding October 1st.
