How to Build a Photography Project

Documentary photographers, like photojournalists and photojournalistic images, are expected to capture the world or everyday life, as it exists, without stage managing or directing or editing the scene. Documentary photography is popular to chronicle significant and historical events, or just to tell stories in images. It can be a long process if you are doing it on your own. Building a documentary photography project is a journey that guides you to understand better a topic, and your position in relation to it. Aside from the work you do in the field, getting familiar with places and subjects, shooting photos or conducting interviews, working on a project involves a good amount of research and production that needs to happen before, during and after the completion of the project. Here a few advices:

1. Do research on your subject

As you read this in 2020 there is no topic you can imagine that has not been written about, photographed, documented in some form. Even if your project covers events happening in the news, there’s always a visual tradition linked to the representation of that kind of events, which might be related to politics, war, protests or natural disasters. If you’re photographing a place you think no one has ever photographed before go back to art history, and you most likely will discover paintings, sculptures, architecture that can offer ideas and inspiration.

The moment you decide to work on a topic it becomes your job to know it intimately. You can do it by reading books and articles, researching archives, attending exhibitions, browsing the web for current photo projects on similar themes.

The amount of material you’ll discover should not discourage you from working on your goal, but it will give you an awareness that’s fundamental in order to find out what’s your place in relation to the topic, and what perspective you can offer. 

Some projects will inspire you, some others will help you realize which mistakes you don’t want to make. Give yourself the chance to get bored of the images you feel like you’ve seen already, that other photographers could have taken, and broaden your field of references to find connections to a movie, literature or an art piece. 

2. Find an idea 

On any wide, complex topic, you’ll have to chose the angle to give to your project, and what you want to say about it.

When you present any story to an editor or a gallerist you can assume they’ve seen projects on a given subject a thousand times. They’re tired of the visual rhetoric tied to it. Still, you need your work to surprise them and yourself, taking the story from a different angle than usual or applying a unique approach to it.

You won’t work on a project on climate change, but on the way climate change is affecting the course of monsoon in southern India. Not on violence against women, but on the way an activist organization in Cairo is helping women who are victims of domestic abuse.

Think visually. Knowing yourself as a photographer helps you understand which kinds of approach would work for you. Most interesting topics are complex and hard to visualize, but many of the best ideas result from the need to circumvent obstacles.

Bodies of work like Rafal Milach’s “The Winners” and Tomas Van Houtryve’s “Blue Sky Days” are good examples of how themes as propaganda and surveillance can be addressed in creative ways. 

3. Write a short statement

When working on a new project, one of the first steps is writing a couple of paragraphs that state what the project is about. This text can be sent to an editor as a pitch for a story to be assigned or upon the project’s completion, but it’s also a tool you can use for yourself. It forces you to put black on white what you’re interested in and what’s the message you want to send, and it helps you concentrate in a given direction while you’re shooting.

Think of this as the moment you tell something to a friend or a therapist and that idea or feeling takes a real shape for the first time. The way you set priorities and the words you use when you need to explain an intention to someone else force you to be clearer with yourself, and facilitate your concentration when you’re shooting.

This paragraph can and should be rewritten overtime as you dig deeper in the knowledge of the subject and its characters, eventually change some initial preconceptions and realize new important aspects of the story you ignored before.

When you’re writing to an editor, you can use data to suggest to the reader why your story is relevant, and possibly why it’s relevant at the very moment you’re writing. Editors usually need news pegs, anniversaries, specific events that justify the publication of a certain story at a given moment, because they’re constantly monitoring which themes drive a wide public interest in a certain historical moment, season or day of the year. 

You have to be very concise, and give the editor the chance to imagine from a visual point of view the work you’re going to produce.

If you intend to or have already used any specific visual approach (a gallery of portraits, landscapes, diptychs, an alternation between still lives and traditional documentary photography), then write it down in a sentence.

4. Draw a concept map and make a production plan

A concept map is a personal tool you can use to plan your shoots and establish connections among any ideas you might have, related to your project.

My advice is to determine one central concept that connects to all other ideas on your map, then start thinking of the other elements you want to include. Write them down on the map to see how they are connected to the main idea, and among themselves.

As you work on your project, the map will help you visualize which elements you neglected, which ones you have a lot of material for, which shoots you should plan.

According to the nature of your project, draw out a loose production plan. Are you planning to complete your project in a month, a year, more? Which events do you need to be present for? How often do you plan to visit a certain subject or location?

5. Get Access

Unless you’re shooting a project on your own family or friends, there’s always going to be some level of production involved. Most of it consists in contacting the people who can give you access to the situations you want to photograph. NGOs working in the field, medical centers, writers who have worked on a similar theme, embassies, homeless shelters, political parties, are all entities whose press offices can be called or emailed, to get through doors seemingly impossible to open. This takes some time to get used to, as it takes self-confidence, knowledge of the subject and savoir faire to overcome our fears and convince strangers to trust us. Overtime this strengthen photographers’ personalities and becomes second nature though, as you discover that sometimes access turns out to be shockingly easy, while others it takes many doors shut on your face before getting where we want to be shooting.

The precious connections you get should be cultivated throughout the time you’re shooting and afterwards, being clear from the beginning about the nature of the project and its possible distribution. Failure to communicate effectively can often result in misunderstandings, disappointments and the possible revocation of the access itself.

It’s fundamental to respect the trust people allow you or understand their reticence to expose themselves to a public of strangers. That said, once the permission has been gained photographers should ask subjects to sign model releases allowing them the right to use the photos for editorial and cultural purposes, in order to avoid any legal problems related to the distribution of the project.

6. Look for funding

There are different ways to look for funding for your work. Which one is right for you depends on the nature of the project, but be aware that most backers are willing to dispense money for photographers who have already done a substantial amount of working on a topic and plan to continue working on it.

There are a wide number of grants available throughout the year to support projects on different themes. Climate change, human rights, education and development are only some of the topics most easily sought out by grant providers. Entire lists of grants and their deadlines are available online, and dedicated facebook groups are also active to keep the public updated on them.

The Alexia foundation, the Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation, the Magnum Foundation grants are only some of the most known, but the more precise the topic you’re interested in covering the easier it is to find specific grants relatively easier to get, because they don’t receive as many applicants. 

There are also dedicated grants and funding opportunities for women, minorities and professionals who are underrepresented in the industry. IWMF for instance has been funding working trips for women journalists in any field (photography, writing, radio, video and TV) on a rolling basis in specific areas of the world, and providing them with a free training for journalists in conflict zones. Women Photograph created a database of professional women photographers around the world and supports projects by women and non-binary artists. 

Awards 

There are a number of awards which give money to winners and sometimes runner-ups, others which only grant some visibility. The Leica Oscar Barnak Award, the Carmignac Photojournalism Award, the Eugene Smith Award are among the most prestigious awards which support winners with a considerable amount of money, but in this case as well a good research can help you find less competitive ones. 

According to the topic and the area you’re focusing on you might be able to find private firms, institutes or research centers interested in similar photographic material to the one you’re producing. You can use this opportunity to produce material ad hoc for their needs, which could unlock access to restricted areas or people, as a paid job. This kind of deals can easily enable you to produce the kind of work you need for your own project at the same time, as long as you keep, by contract, the copyright on the images and have no restriction on how to use them. 

Publications

The editorial market is a hard one to navigate at this moment in history, since the last decades have seen budgets shrink progressively and assignments become scarcer and shorter in length. The amount of money you’d receive from selling your project to one publication could hardly ever reimburse even the expenses you had to produce it. That said, as a freelancer you have the opportunity to sell the story to more than one outlet and the accumulation of different sales can constitute a bigger payback. Usually a publication won’t republish a project that has already been issued in the same country by a competitor, but it will publish it if it’s been featured only abroad. Among the few exceptions are the New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker. Contracts normally ask photographers to observe an embargo period, 30 days for instance, at the end of which they are able to resale their photos.

7. Find the contacts you need in the editorial market

If the goal for your project is to be featured in a publication, do some research on which outlets are publishing stories on the same line as the topic you chose, and which ones favor a visual style and approach similar to yours. 

The environment in the photography field is very competitive, but conscious that it’s virtually impossible for any of us to produce and distribute projects on our own, photographers continuously help each other sharing contacts of editors and fixers, lending and borrowing equipment, giving advices on how to apply for certain visas and getting access to a wide variety of places. A collaborative and generous mindset goes a long way overtime. 

It takes time to get into the flow, dealing with new tasks and a variety of strangers on the top of finding the concentration to produce and edit the work. What I can say considering the experiences I had is that no matter what project you’re working on, it is not only shooting pictures that ends up being a rewarding experience. It’s the people you meet because you’re looking for contacts, the reading and reasoning you’re forced to do when you need to write about your project, the adrenaline of getting access to a place you thought was off limits, the surreal situations you would never find yourself into if it weren’t for photography. The efforts you make end up building a baggage of experience that stays with you, sometimes changes you as a person, and it can be even more memorable than the photos themselves.

9. Panoramic Pictures

A popular technique for landscapes, panoramic photography enlarges the viewpoint beyond the normal size of a camera lens. To ensure there are no gaps in your panoramic shot, overlap your image by 15-30%.

You’ll also want to keep your camera as level as possible to ensure the photo is even throughout. Don’t forget that panos work well for vertical shots, too, like waterfalls and deep canyons.

Choose photography according to the context of the presentation

Pay attention to the quality of the images, where to include the photos in the slides.

Photographs should add value to your presentation. Always keep in mind what the goal of the presentation is and what you want to achieve with each image. Do you want to excite the public, put them in a particular situation, visually explain a problem, etc.? 

Think about what you want to make your public feel and look for pictures that help you achieve it and that are consistent with the copy. Both text and photos have to complement each other in order to help convey your ideas clearly. In this way, you will make it easier for your audience to understand your message and make them remember more. 

Also adapt the photographs to the people you are addressing. For example, text and images will have a different tone in a formal business presentation than in a creative strategy proposal to a client. In the second option you have more freedom and can use more daring images than in the first situation.

W hat better way to learn the iPhone photography basics than by capturing an image every single day for a whole year? A 365 project might sound like a daunting task, but when you consider the thousands of photos that likely already exist on your iPhone or on iCloud , it’s an entirely doable challenge. In fact, there’s a good chance you use your iPhone camera almost every day anyway. The only difference here is that you’re going to be taking your photography that little bit more seriously so you can develop your skills as an iPhone photographer. 

Embarking on a 365 project will immediately give you a goal to work towards, adding a sense of purpose to the photographs that you capture. And if you plan your days effectively, you’ll be able to throw in your fair share of challenges along the way. This is integral in allowing you to develop your photography skills, just make sure you don’t become too ambitious too quickly. Just like an endurance race, a 365 project is a marathon, not a sprint. Shoot three sunsets and four sunrises in the first week and there’s no way you can keep that level of commitment up. 

So, if you’re thinking about starting a 365 project today, here are a few tips to help you avoid throwing the towel in so you can journey forth and become a better photographer…

Brainstorm photography ideas

There is quite simply no genre of photography that doesn’t benefit from planning. And a 365 project is no different. If you leave capturing your photo to the last minute every day, you risk running out of ideas and becoming frustrated. You certainly won’t be capturing your best work. 

As soon as you commit to a 365 project, brainstorm your ideas. Your iPhone’s Notes app is a great way of doing this, so you have access to them at all times. Write down the various genres you’d like to try and then get more specific with particular mini projects you’d like to work on. You can then start to plan your time more effectively and shoot more ambitious images.

Avoid unrealistic expectations

Vowing to capture 365 images in a single year is a huge undertaking and it’s easy to become disillusioned, especially if you set unrealistic expectations. A 365 project is anything you want it to be: a visual diary of your life, an excuse to take photos or a practice regime that allows you to build your skillset. Just don’t expect to capture an award-winning iPhone image every single day. Even the world’s best photographers would struggle to shoot their best work on such a consistent basis. 

Instead, allow yourself to find creative ways to come up with easy wins on days when you’re busy and save more ambitious projects for the days when you’ve got the time. If all you manage to capture is an artistic ray of window light, highlighting the cup on your desk one day, that’s not a problem. And while you should try your best not to miss a day, if you do, simply shoot two photos the next day and move on.

Keep a camera with you at all times

If you were shooting with a dedicated camera, this would be an extremely important step. But it highlights the real beauty of iPhone photography and why – even as a seasoned photographer – I take my iPhone Camera seriously . It’s the camera that’s always by your side, making it arguably the best camera you could use for a 365 project.

Whether you’re on your way back to the office with your lunch and you spot a fantastic piece of architecture, or you’re walking the dog in the evening and are met with beautiful golden light, or you’re off on a city break, your iPhone is the camera that’s always by your side.

Experiment with genres and iPhone tech

Experimentation is key if you want to use your 365 project to develop your skills, but it’s also a great way to get to know your iPhone camera inside out. I’m willing to bet that most iPhone photographers keep their camera on the main wide-angle lens and don’t deviate further. This is your chance to experiment with different lenses: try shooting a fun portrait with the ultra-wide-angle lens or if you’re lucky enough to have an iPhone 15 Pro Max , put that brand-new 5x telephoto lens through its paces. Explore functions like Pano, Portrait, and Night modes. Apply a filter and shoot in black and white or finally get round to learning how to edit iPhone photos the right way by delving into the Photos app’s editing functions. 

Challenge yourself

Just as you don’t want to set yourself unrealistic expectations, you also don’t want to go too far the other way. If all you do is take a quick snap every day, with little thought regarding composition , the quality of light, or whether or not you’re using the right lens, you simply will not improve as a photographer. You need to push yourself out of your comfort zone at certain times throughout the year. This might be trying a different genre like street photography or portraiture, it might be learning more about your iPhone camera and using the various features to their fullest. Either way, you have to push yourself to get better.

Share and collate your images

There really is something special about seeing a body of work. In a world where digital photography means we can shoot and move on, and the time-sensitive nature of digital media means articles and images are soon lost to the annals of time, seeing a collection of your images in one place is a really satisfying way to chart progress. It’s one of the main reasons why Instagram became so popular, after all. 

Creating an Instagram account for your 365 project is a fantastic way of collating your work and sharing it with others. It also gives your project an additional purpose and allows you to receive constructive criticism, garner inspiration from other accounts and receive positive comments to motivate you further. And if you don’t want to share your project online, you can create a folder in the Photos app, so you can still collate your work and browse through it in one place.

Find a photography partner

Persuading a friend, or even a group of friends, to partake in a 365 project is a great way to stay inspired and motivated, while also introducing a healthy dose of competition. This allows you to really immerse yourself within the project. Encouragement will spur you on and constructive criticism will help you develop. You may even find yourselves heading out together and becoming more ambitious with your efforts. But easily the most valuable by-product of teaming up, is an added sense of accountability. If you ever find yourself disillusioned or lacking the motivation to continue, your photography partner will be there to lift you up and encourage you to push on.

But I’m too busy to take a photo every day… 

Photography should be about having fun. Force yourself to embark on a 365 project and it could have an adverse effect. If your life is simply too busy for a 365 project right now, you can still use almost all of the tips above, but apply them to more manageable, mini projects. This might be taking a photo every time you walk the dog, only capturing black and white photography for a month, or focusing on a street photography project during a city break. Multiple ‘mini projects’ throughout the year may prove just as valuable as a 365 project. You're on the right track as long as you’re motivated to capture photos regularly.

Born and living in Moscow he is a fashion designer, filmmaker and photographer.  Inspired by the fall of the Iron Curtain and Moscovian youth he started his own streetwear label in 2008 called Aglec : "a personal take on the fetishistic uniformity of Moscow street gangs’ post- Perestroika  suburb sportswear, mixed with political paraphernalia." His work has a documentary aesthetic informed by his urban surroundings and friends. Representing a new Russia he records day-to-day life on film and camera in both a brutal and celebratory light, bringing the post-Soviet generation to a forefront and giving it a powerful voice. With his debut photography exhibition at Pleasant Gallery we talk to the multi-tasking, super-power about his work.

What influences to your work? Everyday life in Russia.

Are you inspired by anything or anyone? I try to get myself into new situations and get to know new people in order to get inspired. The last time this happened was when I met a guy called Arseni at a party in Saint Petersburg – I was incredibly inspired by him and came up with an idea for my next video. 

You are not solely a fashion designer or a photographer - how would you describe what you do? There are things that interest me, and so far I have found two instruments of showing them: creating clothes and taking pictures. 

What has been the main driving force behind your work? I truly believe in a great future for my country and I am happy to show it's spectacular moments, and even make them up sometimes, to inspire others around me. 

What aesthetic and feel do you hope your work projects? Is there an underlying message through your work? I do, of course, have different ideas and messages in my works and they are always clear to me. But what others see in them, might differ from my vision and this is what's interesting, this is what I aim to do: to stimulate others to think, even if it is different from my own thinking. 

What are you working on at the moment? We have just finished production of the special selection of pieces for Dover Street Market – it will be available later this week and we are currently working on the presentation of S/S11 Collection and on the new fanzine.

MOSCOW House of Photography

The Moscow House of Photography is the only Russian Museum, which has chosen the strategy of festivals and broad scale projects. Efficiency of this strategy has been proved by the International Months of Photography — “Photobiennale” and “Fashion and Style in Photography” Moscow International Festivals. Starting from 1996, thanks to efforts of the Moscow House of Photography more than 200 foreign projects have been exhibited both in Moscow and the Russian regions, the projects have included exhibitions of Eugene Atget, Maurice Tabard, Horst P. Horst, Man Ray, Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier Bresson, Helmut Newton, Seidou Keita, Bettina Rheims, William Klein, Jeanloup Sieff, Jean-Paul Goude, Marline Franck, Sarah Moon, Lillian Bassman and others. Within the scope of the festivals the Moscow House of Photography conducts scientific conferences on history and theory of photography, master classes and consultations with leading masters of national and foreign photo art.

7 First Impressions of Moscow, Russia (From a Street Photography Perspective)

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the second largest city in Europe by population. It’s an urban, cosmopolitan city of the highest level, with more than enough glitz to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of European and Russian that makes it stand out on its own. And the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen.

So here are my first impressions of Moscow, from my personal Street Photographer perspective…

7 First Impressions of Moscow  (From a Street Photography Perspective)

1. big city with so much to discover.

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

2. Museum Metro

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to definitely check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya 
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya 
  • Komsomolskaya 
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

3. Not as walkable as Saint-Petersburg

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have a lot of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

4.  Gorky Park is like a Russian Central Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Half the city under construction

European cities in general seem to be filled with more construction than usual lately. But while this won’t be true forever, Moscow was filled with the most I’ve ever seen. Moscow already has the most skyscrapers in Europe, with many being less than a decade old. In only the last few years, the three tallest skyscrapers in Europe have opened here, giving it five of Europe’s ten tallest. The 2018 FIFA Word Cup is bringing much of this on, but the city is pushing to complete a skyline here than will rival any in the world.

The recession has slowed down the construction some, but the government is pushing it on. So all over the city, there were sidewalks covered with wood boards and lined with striped construction walls. At first, it was a little disappointing from a street photography perspective to see so much blocked by construction. After a while, though, it became something to capture. The striped construction materials and signs are colorful and all the workers created some interesting activity. It will be interesting to see what the city looks like when everything is complete, but for now, the construction provides interest itself.

6. Learn the Russian Alphabet

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, it can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

7. Where East Meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with a museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more European package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline and modernities with soviet emblems and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet nostalgia, and a whole lot more.

Russia’s Metropolis

Moscow is famous around the world, but it might not be completely what you expect from Russia’s capital. The city’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it brings something changed over time since its Soviet days. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. Most might say it feels more like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

What is the 'God Bless the USA Bible'? The $60 Bible Trump and Lee Greenwood are selling

Donald Trump is now in the business of selling Bibles, according to an announcement made Tuesday.

Trump announced the partnership with country music singer Lee Greenwood, best known for his song "God Bless the USA". The pair is selling a custom version of the Bible for $59.99, called the " God Bless the USA Bible," which was previously announced in 2021 by Greenwood but then fell to the wayside after hitting snafus with publishing.

"All Americans need a Bible in their home, and I have many. It's my favorite book," Trump said in a video posted on social media "It's a lot of peoples' favorite book."

"We have to bring Christianity back into our lives and into what will be again a great nation," Trump said. "Our Founding Fathers did a tremendous thing when they built America on Judeo-Christian values. Now that foundation is under attack, perhaps as never before."

The announcement comes as Trump is embroiled in several legal battles, leaving him reportedly strapped for cash. He recently posted a $91 million bond as he appeals a jury award in a defamation case and, on Monday a New York state appeals court ruling imposed an additional $175 million bond while he appeals a civil fraud verdict against him. He will owe another $354 million plus interest if he loses the appeal.

Trump has denied that he is facing financial issues and a disclaimer on the controversial Bible's website claims it "has nothing to do with any political campaign" and is "not owned, managed or controlled by Donald J. Trump, The Trump Organization, CIC Ventures LLC or any of their respective principals or affiliates."

What exactly is this self-proclaimed patriotic version of the Bible and what does it have to do with a country song from the 1980s? Here's what we know.

What is the 'God Bless the USA Bible'?

The "God Bless the USA Bible" is a version of the Christian Bible "inspired by Lee Greenwood's patriotic anthem 'God Bless the USA,'" according to the official God Bless The USA Bible website.

Touting itself as the "only Bible endorsed by President Trump" and Greenwood himself, it incorporates copies of American political documents and Greenwood's song lyrics into the copy.

A "spotlight" section on the website shows other conservative personalities posing with a copy of the bible, including Tomi Lahren, Donal Trump Jr., Rita Cosby, Travis Tritt and Gov. Mike Huckabee.

According to the website, "high order volume" means customers will have to wait four to six weeks for delivery.

What is in the 'God Bless the USA Bible'?

The "God Bless the USA Bible" is the King James Version translation interspersed with copies of the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, the Pledge of Allegiance and handwritten lyrics to the chorus of “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood.

According to the Bible's website, it comes in a large print, two-column format.

Who is Lee Greenwood?

Melvin Lee Greenwood is an American  country music  singer-songwriter. He has released more than 20 major-label albums but is best known for his 1984 patriotic song "God Bless the USA."

Greenwood identifies as a conservative Republican and Christian and his song has often been used at Republican political rallies and conventions. It has been used in the campaigns of Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush and more recently, Donald Trump.

President Bush nominated Greenwood to serve on the National Council of Arts, which he did from 2008 to 2022. In 2018, Greenwood was awarded the MMP Music Award and was inducted into the MMP Hall of Fame by Commander Joseph W. Clark.

'God Bless the USA Bible' controversies, response

Constitutional and legal scholars, as well as people in the Christian church, have rebuffed the existence of a Bible that mixes religion and legal doctrine. When the concept was first announced, it received notable backlash.

In 2021, HarperCollins Christian Publishing  refused to manufacture the book after a preliminary agreement, leading Greenwood and Hugh Kirkpatrick, who led the company Elite Service Pro behind the custom Bible, to look elsewhere for publishing.

HarperCollins Christian Publishing, which includes Zondervan and Thomas Nelson publishing groups, is the North American licensor for the New International Version translation of the Bible, which ultimately was not used in the "God Bless the USA" version. Instead, it uses the King James Version translation.

It is now unclear who the publisher and licensor of the new version is. Greenwood's publicist previously told the Nashville Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY network, that Elite Source Pro is no longer a partner on the project. He was unable to name the new licensee who is manufacturing the Bible.
