Writing task 2 in the IELTS test includes essays where the candidate’s writing skills are tested. The applicants must choose from the list of essay topics given in the question paper and write a 250 words excerpt justifying the topic to get good marks.

What qualifies as an essay worthy of a band score of 6.5 or more depends on the person checking the exam, but there are some ground rules which you must follow. While these rules apply to everyone giving the exam, your content, vocabulary usage, punctuation, coherence, and other essential things makes the essay better. 

Useful Tips for Writing an IELTS Essay

For the sports IELTS writing task 2, here are a few tips and tricks to improve your band score.

Outline: The essay outline should be clear and precisely related to the topic. This means that at no point in the essay your content should digress from the core points.  

The standard outline includes an introduction, the main content body, and the conclusion. Specifically, the introduction should have the power to immediately hook the reader to your essay and provide an overview of your ideas and what the reader will find in the main content body. 

So make sure that you are investing some time creating a rough outline of your essay before you start writing. An outline will ensure that you stick to the topic and present relevant ideas. 

Vocabulary: An important aspect of your sports essay IELTS exam is using the right words that demonstrate your hold over the English language. Not to mention your knowledge about the subject matter, in this case, sports. So, make sure to use some sports-specific terms in the essay. 

With the other types of words that you will be using, too, it is important to ensure relevance, placement, and understanding. The words you write must be legible and rightly placed in context. 

Familiarity with the topic: Nobody is expecting you to be aware of a topic in detail. But you should have some idea about the current and trending topics. In sports, topics like substance use in sportspersons, steroids, the credibility of the notion that sports are dangerous, children in sports, and a few more are always current.

The topics in the IELTS exam may also revolve around the same. For instance —

• Some people think dangerous sports should be banned, while others think people should choose for themselves. (Academic Test, 2017).
• Many countries want to host international sports events, while other countries think that hosting sports events has more problems than benefits. Discuss both views. (GT Test, 2017).

These two topics were taken from previous years’ IELTS exam question papers. As you can see, the topics are not very specific. They can be easily answered provided you understand the general things involved here. Plus, to gain a better score, you must cite relevant examples to justify the points you will mention in the exam. 

Time Management: You cannot and should not spend too much time writing the IELTS essay. The ideal time to spend on this task is 40 minutes, and that too, considering the time you need to plan, understand, write, and review. 

So, if you are taking more time than this today, start practising and bring it down to under 40 minutes. Writing 250 words should not take more than 20 minutes. The other 20 minutes you need to spend on planning and other tasks. 

One of the main reasons examinees spend more than 40 minutes is their failure to process their thoughts or they get confused with what to write. So, move back to the first point where we talked about the IELTS writing task 2 sports topic outline. 

Following the outline can help you complete the task on time. You will be able to process your thoughts easily without deviating from the topic. 

Relevant Response: The IELTS writing task 2 is about academic writing. Your prerogative must be to present all the pointers. For instance, “Some people think that dangerous sports should be banned, while others think people should be free to choose.” In this topic, you need to write about both perspectives.

One is for the argument, and the second is against the idea. In both, you need to cite relevant examples to justify your statements and end the discussion with your point of view and rationale behind choosing it. 

The academic writing test will mostly ask you to write different perspectives within the 250 words limit. So, while attempting this test, make sure that you present all the information with the pointers mentioned above. Most importantly, do not mix the ‘for’ and ‘against’ arguments at any point.

Sports plays an important role for students as they become mentally capable of learning new things and physically capable of investing time in studying. I think that going into sports will make a student active, more knowledgeable, and social because they make friends while playing. 

The naysayers believe that the time students spend on sports can be otherwise invested in becoming better at academics. Being good at academics is essential as it helps students become intelligent and successful. Hence, parents don’t like their kids participating in sports because they don’t want them to be distracted from studying. 

As you can see, some parents wish to see their kids playing sports, and others don’t share the same feeling. But, I think that sports is an integral part of education and both of them must be developed simultaneously. 

The essay above satisfies the requirements of the task. We have stuck to the word limit and used some relevant words relevant to the topic. You don’t have room to write too much or too little in the IELTS writing task. So, the task is to find a balance between both arguments.

The World Cup football match and the Olympics are held worldwide with great national support and expectations. As a fan of those competitions, I am totally convinced that sporting events can be necessary for international relations and national unity.

First of all, the World Cup, Olympics, and other international games work for easing tensions among different nations. For example, South and North Korea have football games regularly, which gives the two countries a chance to understand each other deeply. In the mid-1990s, hundreds of North Korean supporters came to South Korea with the footballers, and they were very excited during the sporting events. Even if it sounds ridiculous, many South Koreans were quite surprised at that moment when North Koreans shouted and cried during the match. We all realized that they were very ordinary sports fans even though they were occasionally very secretive . Through sports, two divided nations could reduce their political and ideological tensions and could feel patriotic unity .

On the other hand, some sports matches can make international relations worse. For instance, football or baseball games between Korea and Japan are always big matches in the two countries where full tensions overflow . Sometimes, after the matches, the two rivals blame each other, and their patriotic emotions explode in an aggressive way . Even a much worse scenario is that the troubles caused by losing games affect the players directly. As far as I know, a couple of Korean players in Japan are suffered from invisible discrimination after the match between the two countries.

In conclusion, I think that international sporting occasions can be one of the good ways to ease tensions or to release patriotism safely. However, I believe that games can not be the fundamental way for sound patriotism or peaceful international relations.

It is a common belief that international sports events and competitions have always proven themselves to be a connecting cord among different nations and fosters patriotism in the citizens of a country. I stand in support of that notion and in the paragraphs to follow, I shall reason that notion.

International sports such as Cricket World Cup or Football World Cup, so on and so forth, create an ambience that fortifies and strengthens the ties among different countries that otherwise could be at diplomatically contending sports. It is seen very often that the citizens of the two rival nations do not share a pleasant thought-spot for each other, in such a case whenever the sports teams of those countries have a face-off, the sportsmanship take the better of them and the tussle between them slowly assuages owing to the propagation of amicable relations among the players of the two hosting countries. Moreover, they come to terms with the situations of another contending country and the preponderant circumstances therein. 

In addition to that, it is also very pervasive that many a time a feeling of nationalism and the citizens’ love for their respective countries suddenly see a vigour and surge in the intensity during such competitions. For instance, during Olympics the whole nation counts in harmony and synchronisation, the number of medals won by their players and hence, exult and jubilate together taking pride in their warriors. Moreover, it sets aside the paltry and trifling unnecessary strife prevalent in the countries otherwise and accentuates the patriotism that heightens more than ever.

Although, some could say such competitions may exacerbate an already fumbling relationship between the two countries, however, that shall be a lack of judiciousness and prudence, and it doesn’t require any specific event per se to pick up a grudge. However, that couldn’t fail a whole concept of international sports meet that plays a role in cementing good amiability, more commonly than not.

Conclusively, it could thus be stated that such competitions vitalize the feelings and true essence of love, nationalism, international-conviviality and affability.

Some countries achieve international sports by building specialised facilities to train top athletes, instead of providing sports facilities that everyone can use. Do you think this is positive or negative development?

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

From my point of view, I believe that this is a negative development and countries should build sports facilities that everyone can use in harmony with specialized facilities used to train top athletes.

Specialized facilities are built so that the countries’s athletes could achieve greatness in their respective sports which will inturn make the country popular enough that the people would want to visit it. this will allow more tourist attraction and this will help the country to generate alot of revenue. For example, when messi, the world’s greatest footballer won the fifa world cup, there was an increase in the number of people visiting Argentina just to see him celebrate his victory with his people. it also allows the oppurtunity for the country to host international events such as the olympics which ultimately increases the political and financial postion of the country.

However, sports facilities that every one can use should also be provided, as it helps to mantain a physically and mentally healthy body. Such facilities will allow teenagers to have a better activity to do instead of lying around all day in their rooms and watching tv or social media on the phone. Having a variety of sports facilities will allow them to be energetic, and will help them in their over all grooming and over all education, as they will learn how to work as a team and how to handle different situations.

In conclusion, a country should focus on develping both specialized and regular sports facilities as each has its own advantges in terms of genrerating a revenue through them or providing a healthy environemnt for its own citizens.

1.  Popular events like the football World Cup and other international sporting occasions are essential in easing international tensions and releasing patriotic emotions in a safe way.  

Sample Answer

Every four years, the whole world stops to watch international sporting events such as the Olympics and the Football World Cup in which athletes show their best performance to make  their country proud of them. These sporting occasions have proved to be helpful in easing  international tensions in difficult times when powerful leaders were trying to control the world’s  economy and other governments were fighting over land.

The Olympic Games are one of the best examples which prove how sporting events can bring  nations together, at least temporarily. From ancient History, when Greeks and Romans would  interrupt battles to participate in the games, to the more recent international disputes, when  athletes from Palestine and Israel would forget their differences, compete pacifically and even  embrace each other after an event. Moreover, these popular events have called the world’s  attention to the terrible consequences of wars; thus some leaders have tried to accept  agreements to end their dispute and live peacefully.

Similarly, international sporting events show benefits in some developing countries which live in  a daily internal civil war. For example, Brazil has a high rate of unemployment, lack of  education, hunger, crime, poverty and corruption which leads to an immense embarrassment of  being Brazilian and a low self-esteem. However, when the Football World Cup starts, the  Brazilian squad, which is considered the best team in the world, provokes an amazing feeling of  pride in their country. Most people seem to forget all their problems and even the criminal  activity decreases. They paint roads with the national colors, use wear the Brazilian team shirt  and buy national flags. Moreover, the competition brings families and neighbors together and  even rival gangs watch the games and celebrate peacefully.

In conclusion, popular sporting events play an important role in decreasing international  tensions and liberating patriotic feelings as History has shown.

2.  Should dangerous sports be banned? Yes!

Millions of people play sport every day, and, inevitably, some suffer injury or pain. Most  players and spectators accept this risk. However, some people would like to see dangerous sports such as boxing banned. This essay will examine some of the reasons  for banning certain sports.

Some sports are nothing but an excuse for violence. Boxing is a perfect example. The  last thing an increasingly violent world needs is more violence on our television. The  sight of two men (or even women) bleeding, with faces ripped open, trying to obliterate  each other is barbaric. Other sports, such as American football or rugby, are also  barely-concealed violence.

Some people argue that the players can choose to participate. However this is not  always the case. Many boxers, for example, come from disadvantaged backgrounds.  They are lured by money or by social or peer pressure and then cannot escape. Even in  richer social groups, schools force unwilling students to play aggressive team sports,  claiming that playing will improve the students’ character (or the school’s reputation), but  in fact increasing the risk of injury.

Even where people can choose, they sometimes need to be protected against  themselves. Most people approve of governments’ efforts to reduce smoking. In the  same way, governments need to act if there are unacceptably high levels of injuries in  sports such as football, diving, mountaineering, or motor-racing.

I accept that all sports involve challenge and risk. However violence and aggression  should not be permitted in the name of sport. Governments and individuals must act to  limit brutality and violence, so that children and adults can enjoy and benefit from sport.

3.  Save our Sports!

Today, many sports are becoming increasingly regulated. Boxing, rugby, soccer, and  other games are being targeted by sports bodies and medical organizations in an effort  to improve safety standards and to reduce injuries. However, for some people, this is  not enough, and they would rather see some dangerous sports banned completely. In  this essay, I will examine some arguments against banning dangerous sports.

Sports, competition, and games seem to be natural to humans. Young children learn  their own limits and strengths through play with others, but they also learn valuable  social lessons about what acceptable behavior and the rights of others. Sport therefore  is not just a physical phenomenon, but a mental and social one.

Challenging sport provides a healthy, largely safe, physical outlet for aggression. There  is very little evidence to show that people who take part in dangerous sports become  violent as a result. In fact it is more likely that apart from the many friendships created in  playing, sport acts as a safety valve for a society by reducing stress. Moreover, sport  teaches and requires discipline, training, and respect for the rules – valuable lessons in  any society.

Almost all sports involve some risk. Young rugby players are paralysed every year in  scrums. Scuba-diving accidents can lead to brain damage or death. Even golf or jogging  can lead to pain or injury. Without some elements of risk or challenge, sport becomes  meaningless. A marathon runner trying to improve his time, basketball players fiercely  battling an opposing team, or a sky-diving team defying gravity – all are trying to push  themselves to their maximum. There is therefore no sport without danger.

There is also the issue of freedom. Without a wide range of sports, many people would  feel trapped or limited. People should be free to participate in activities with others as  long as it does not affect the safety of non-participants.

There also should be limits to the power of governments to ban sports. If one sport is  banned because of alleged danger, then what sport would be next? Boxing is the most  common target of opponents of dangerous sports. But if boxing is banned, would motor  racing follow, then rugby, wrestling, or weightlifting? Furthermore, many sports would go  underground, leading to increased injury and illegal gambling.

Nobody denies that regulation is needed. Medical bodies have introduced safety rules in  boxing, in soccer, and these safety regulations have been welcomed by players. But the  role of government should be reduced.

In conclusion, our society would be healthier if more people took part in sports of all  kinds. We should continue to try to prevent accidents and injuries. However, we should  also ensure that sports are challenging, exciting, and, above all, fun.

Task 2 Essay: International Sports Events

Question: Some people think that hosting international sports events is good for the country, while some people think it is bad. Discuss both views and state your opinion. (Test Date: 9/11/2020?)

Band 8+ Sample Answer:

(Intro) International sporting events have become increasingly common in recent decades. While some people reckon that host countries might have to deal with a sudden surge in crime or involve themselves in an exhausting preparation process, more importantly I believe they can take the opportunity to boost tourism.

(Body 1) To begin with, although events such as these are a great opportunity for countries to gain global exposure, they are present significant challenges. Firstly, records have shown that there is a two folds increase in crimes such as prostitution and petty theft when a country organises an event such as the World Cup or the Olympics. Furthermore, the process of preparing for these events is often demanding. For the World Cup 2014, it took Brazil five years to revitalise its cities and build the necessary infrastructure including world-class stadiums and training facilities to meet high standards set by FIFA.

(Body 2) On the other hand, I am of the opinion that international sporting games can potentially stimulate the tourism sector. By being the host, a country is able to attract a large array of athletes and their supporters from all around the world. This sudden increase in visitors will likely proliferate the sales of products and services such as accommodation and transportation within the period of the events. In the longer term, it is a great chance for the host nations to promote their culture on a global stage. For example, since the pictures of beautifully garnished Vietnamese dishes made headlines during the SEA Games in 2003, Vietnam has been branded the “Kitchen of the world” and a must visit destination for global food lovers. This obviously does wonders for the Vietnamese economy.

(Conclusion) In conclusion, although sports events come at the expense of a few short term problems, the benefits of boosted gross sales and cultural promotion are of greater significance. Host nations can also consider the option of sharing an event with a neighbouring country to spread the risk and still enjoy the lucrative long term benefits. (335 words)

Sports Facilities: Discuss Both Views [Sample Answer]

It’s time for another sample band 9 answer and this week we are going to look at a “ discuss both views ” question from task 2 of the IELTS writing exam. The question that we will examine today is about sports facilities, but the ideas here can be applied to anything. Remember, there are many topics in the IELTS writing test and you should be prepared for the most common ones.

Understanding the Question

Before you begin writing an IELTS essay, you need to understand the question fully. That process has several parts. Let’s look at our question for today in order to understand it.

Some people say that the best way to improve public health is by increasing the number of sports facilities. Others, however, say that this would have little effect on public health and that other measures are required. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

What is the topic here?

• Government policy?

I would say that the answer is #2 – health. However, you can clearly see that the other topics I have listed are part of the question as well. You could not answer this well without talking about sports or society.

A Secret for Understanding the Question

If you want to understand a question better, the smart thing to do is paraphrase it. This is because you have to try harder to understand it and it can break the idea down better in your mind.

There are two parts to IELTS questions: the statement and the task :

You need to “discuss both views” and also give an opinion, but about what?

About those two statements:, which I shall paraphrase:

• More sports centres will improve public health.
• Sports centres would not help, but something else might.

Once you understand the question fully, you can begin to plan your answer. For this sort of question, it is possible to use 4 or 5 paragraphs , but I generally recommend 4 because it is easier and usually more effective.

Structure your IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay

I have lots of material on this website about structuring your IELTS writing task 2 essay, but today I will show you my outline for this model essay.

First, you should brainstorm some ideas about the topic. Don’t spend too much time doing this because it is better to spend that time on actually writing the essay. But you could make some notes like this:

Those are just a few ideas. You should brainstorm your own ones. You should also present your opinion . It is really important that you do not forget this part or else you will not have adequately answered the question.

Next, you have to wonder how to use your paragraphs to present these ideas effectively. Here is my sample answer:

This might not make much sense to you… but don’t worry! Notes are a personal thing and it is only really important that they make sense to the person writing them.

Sample Band 9 Answer

Ok, now that you have seen my structure plans, here is my essay:

There is much debate over the issue of how to help improve public health, and some people have suggested that there should be more sports facilities available. Others, however, say that this would have a minimal impact on the situation. This essay will look at both views and argue that it would indeed only have a small positive impact. Those who support building more public sports facilities believe that they will encourage more people to participate in regular exercise. This is logical, but there are already many public sports facilities available and it has had little impact. The only people who would likely benefit are children, and while this is important, children already have plenty of places to get exercise. Whilst millions of pounds could be spent on building new facilities, it seems that there is little that would really be contributed to helping solve this crisis. Even if there was an uptick in the number of people doing exercise, it would not eliminate the public health crisis as exercise is only one small part of it. While it is true that exercise is good for the human body, it is nearly impossible to burn off the number of calories that the average person is now consuming. Even if a person were to run a marathon, it would not negate the damaging effects of going to McDonald’s for lunch. That person would still end the day in a calorie surplus and therefore continue to gain weight. When you consider that few people can run marathons, it becomes obvious that the culprit for poor public health is not exercise but rather diet. In conclusion, it would be good to have more public sports facilities and there may be some small benefit to this, but unfortunately it would not be a significant benefit and other measures would need to be taken too.

IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

Some people consider sport to be their career and role in the society. For others, it is mostly a workout to keep fit. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer :

Nowadays, it is true that sport plays a very important role in our lives. Some people even pursue it as their career. In my own opinion, sport career is not a bad choice but it is a little risky.

First of all, it is clear that one of the main reasons why people to choose sports is to keep fit. Sports help them to have a good health , lifts their spirit, and so on. After several years playing sports, some people find it really interesting and passionate. They know that it is the career that they are looking for and decide to become professional athletes.

For others, in contrast, they do not consider sports as a career because they simply do not think that sports can bring them a good life or their sports passion is not enough. And as we all know, without passion and determination, we can’t be successful in anything. If someone does not like sports, you can’t force him or her to choose sports as a career.

In my opinion, sports career has 2 sides: positive and negative. If you are successful and can be number one in the world like Roger Federer in tennis or Lionel Messi in football, you can do many things. By then, you will not have to worry about earning a living anymore and will even be able to help others by doing charities or starting a foundation. It sounds great but if you are just an average player or even worse, suffer a serious injury which destroys your career, you will be nothing and there will be no way to get back.

In summary, working out to keep fit is good. However, if you want to make it as a career, like any other job, you must consider carefully because after your decision is made, you have to follow it till the end.

The IELTS writing exam is split into two parts and task 2 is worth 66% of your score.

The IELTS writing task 2 is an essay writing task that assesses your ability to express and develop an argument in response to a given topic.

You are allocated 40 minutes to write it.

On the official British Council site there are documents that state your essay must contain at least 250 words, however, in the official criteria, there is no mention of 250 words.

The basic structure for IELTS writing task 2 in the IELTS exam is as follows:

• Introduction : Be sure to state the question in your own words in your introduction so that you introduce the topic of your task 2. Task 2 statements are often a paraphrasing of the initial question.
• Support your opinion : Once you have made your opinion clear, you have to provide facts to justify your choice
• State the opposing point of you . You do not have to persuade the examiner about the opposing opinion, but it is important to state what it is. 
• Summarise your opinion.

Although the latter opinion can be beneficial in some cases, I believe that family upbringing plays a more important role in educating children to be good parts of the community.

Schools can be considered suitable places for children to learn to be good citizens. With standardized educational methods, schools can foster children’s cognitive development so that they are able to contribute to society in the future. For example, Trung Vuong school and Vinschool are well known for having nurtured successful alumni such as Professor Ngo Bao, Professor Nguyen Hung who have devoted their talents to the development of the country. However, these people only represent a small fraction of the total number of students attending schools, and thus sending children to schools cannot be the best method of educating them to be good members of society. 

I believe that parents play a more important role in teaching them how to be good citizens. In Vietnam, the average class size is 20 students, which makes it difficult for educators to provide proper schooling for each student. One to one lessons at home, on the other hand, allow children to progress faster. Furthermore, parents form stronger bonds with their offspring and thus, it is easier for them to shape children’s personalities at an early age. For example, by telling stories such as Robin Hood, Cinderella before bedtime, parents can instil a sense of compassion and integrity into them. These children are likely to become good members of society when they grow up.

In conclusion, although sending children to schools can be seen as a way of teaching them how to be good citizens, I believe that domestic upbringing has a bigger impact on determining who they are in the future.

There is an increasing trend around the world of married couples deciding not to have children. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for couples who decide to do this.

An increasing number of married couples around the world choosing to remain childless. The main benefits of not having a child for couples are that they can focus on their careers and have more time for themselves. The main drawbacks are that they could not fit into their peers’ group and have no one to look after them when they get old. 

One primary advantage of remaining childless for married couples is that they can focus on their work. This is because they have less responsibility and distractions in their lives compared to the couples that have a child. Another advantage of this is that they have more spare time. Looking after a child is a full-time job for parents and taking most of their time, while child-free couples have lots of free time after work. For example, many couples stop going out late with their friends after having a child as they have to stay at home for looking after their children. 

One disadvantage of couples deciding not to have children is that they can struggle to hang with their peers after most of them have children. Most parents prefer to spend more time with other couples that have children as well. Moreover, do not have anyone to look after them in their elderliness is another disadvantage. Children are the ones who take care of their parents when they get old because their parents did the same for them when they were young. For instance, the vast majority of the people who live in care homes have no child. 

In conclusion, the main benefits of staying child-free for couples are that they can be more career-oriented and have more free time for themselves, and the main drawbacks are that they could have problems about fitting into their friends’ group and having no one to take care of them when they become older.

Some would say that parents should teach their offspring how to be good members of society, while others are of the opinion that school is the best in this regard. This essay agrees with the latter point and will show that, despite the practical experiences that parents give their children, school lessons can give deep insights into what it takes to be good citizens.

Some believe that parents can educate their children about being good members of society based on their life experiences. This is because the life experiences that parents can give their children are straightforward, down-to-earth, and so they can easily apply what their parents teach them in reality. For example, many children in Thailand become more polite, honest, and caring to everyone as a direct result of the practical lessons that their parents give them at home. However, I believe that parents now are so busy and do not spend much time with their children teaching them.

For instance, after receiving lessons in civic education at school, many Vietnamese students are more willing to help their neighbors and even strangers, and they feel extremely happy after doing something good for others. For this reason, I believe that school lessons are more influential to young children. 

In conclusion, despite the practical experiences that parents can give their children at home, this essay believes that school lessons can help students deepen their understanding of being good members of society.

In many professional sports, there is an increase in the number of athletes using banned substances to improve their performance.

What are the causes of the phenomenon and what are some of the possible solutions?

In many professional sports, it is becoming commonplace for athletes to abuse prohibited substances to boost their overall performance. This essay will discuss how stiff competition and lax testing systems are the main cause of this problem, and the most suitable solutions are imposing heavier punishments on violators and revamping testing facilities.

The main cause of this problem is the fierce competition that exists in any sports. In other words, most many professional athletes feel that they have to take substances like steroids to give themselves an advantage over other strong opponents. Another reason is the lack of strictness in testing procedures. Many athletes who take advantage of banned substances can still get off scot-free due to the holes in testing systems. For example, a high-profile mix martial artist named Jon John who is notorious for using PED described how easy it was to get away with cheating in an interview in 2015.

A viable solution is to heavily punish lawbreakers. If sports clubs and establishments raise the fine for using banned substances, many athletes will think twice before making attempt to cheat. Details of politicians’ private lives should not be published in newspapers. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is thought that the information regarding politicians’ personal lives should not be shared in print media. This essay strongly agrees with this suggestion because publishing these details could be harmful to their families, and obtaining this type of information might require breaking the law.

First and foremost, what makes that the details related to private aspects of politicians’ lives should not be shared in newspapers is that it could be harmful not only to these individuals but also to their families. This is because revealing some details from their personal lives could expose them to unwanted comments or allegations, which might lead to a great deal of distress. In Poland, for instance, in 2015, the vice-prime minister committed suicide due to not handling the pressure caused by the paparazzi invading his and his family’s private life.

Furthermore, obtaining this type of information, in most cases, means breaking the law. This is because the right to privacy is one of the most fundamental policies in society, and anyone who wants to access the lives of politicians must obtain their consent. However, not only are paparazzi hired to invade properties belonging to politicians to take photos without their permission, but also politicians’ colleagues and relatives are bribed to share confidential facts from their lives. For instance, an accident in which Princess Diana was killed was partly caused by the paparazzi who followed her car, trying to take photos of her and her boyfriend against their will.

In conclusion, I strongly support the suggestion that politicians’ lives should not be subject to the interest of newspapers because revealing personal facts from politicians lives could destroy their family life and the process of obtaining these details often required wrongdoing.

Some say that music, art and drama are as important as other school subjects, especially at the primary level. Do you agree or disagree? Some people believe that arts-related subjects are as important as other school subjects, especially for primary school children. I totally agree with this statement because this can help children to discover their talents from an early age and can increase their confidence. 

One of the reasons I agree that creative subjects have the same importance as other school courses in primary school is that it allows students to find out their potential talents early on. That is to say, school-age is the most convenient time for students to learn more about their interests by trying different activities as they are young enough to pursue their hobbies. They will probably not have any other chance later in their lives to discover that because they will be busy with difficult exams when they get older. For example, most famous singers were discovered by their music teachers at school from a young age, and they claimed that they could not be that successful if their teachers did not find out their talents when they were young.

Moreover, music, art and drama subjects help students to boost their confidence. That is because creative lessons teach students how to perform in front of lots of people and give them a chance to socialise with other students. As a result, students can realise their real potential and act more confidently. For instance, many psychologists suggest to students who are struggling with social anxiety to take drama lessons as it helps to enhance confidence. 

In conclusion, this essay completely agrees that music, art and drama have the same value as other subjects in primary school because it allows children to discover their hidden talents early on and increases their self-confidence.

Some individuals believe that the right place to teach children how to become good citizens is the school, while others argue that parents should be the ones responsible for that. Although parents might influence their children more than anyone else, I believe that educational institutions are more trained and equipped to teach children how to become successful members of the community. 

Parents influence their children more than anyone else. This is due to the fact that mothers and fathers are the ones who raise and spend most of the time with their children which dramatically influences the way children act and think. If parents act in a good manner, their children will indirectly imitate them. This fortifies the fact that no one might exert such a strong influence on their children. For example, a study in Britain showed that children are two times more influenced by their parents than their teachers. However, I believe that this is not enough and that school should be the place teaching children to become good people in society.

Schools are trained to build good citizens. Teachers spent their undergraduate years studying how to deal with children and train them to become better individuals in their communities. For this reason, educational institutions should be the place where children can safely acquire the needed behaviors to become better individuals in the future. For example, a recent study in the USA showed that 90% of schools train teachers how to help students to become better citizens. For this reason, I believe that the best place to do this is the school.

In conclusion, although parents have a strong influence on their children, I believe that the best place to create better citizens is the school because tutors are trained to do that.

It is argued that newspapers ought not to publish the details of private lives of politicians. This essay strongly disagrees with this view because politicians build a public image through such news and they could be held accountable for any wrongdoings.

On the one hand, politicians can gain public trust by building a positive image through newspapers. Being the focus of media, sometimes details of their personal interests end up on the front pages of newspapers, which allows them to gain popularity among masses, especially when their interests match with the general public. Recently, the pictures of a famous politician of Milan, while playing football with local school children were published in many newspapers, and he instantly became famous among school and college students. Hence, it helps them gain popularity by depicting themselves in a positive way. 

On the other hand, publishing details of private affairs disclose the corruption of politicians and make them accountable. Many politicians usually hold a public office and are entrusted with managing public funds. If they do not spend the money on the wellbeing of people and are involved in corruption, newspapers expose their private life and put them under accountability. For example, when details of the lavish spending of the Mayor of London, while on a vacation, were revealed in the SUN, it prompted questions from many sections of the society, eventually exposing his corruption with the public money. Therefore, it is important that newspapers publish these details.

In conclusion, private matters of politicians should be published in newspaper because it allows them to gain popularity and expose their corrupt affairs.

Some say that music, art and drama are as important as other school subjects, especially at the primary level. Do you agree or disagree?

Some people believe that arts education is as significant as the study of other subjects, especially for primary students. I completely agree with this viewpoint because some educational content could be better illustrated in the forms of arts, and the study of arts is one key consideration which fosters all-rounded growth of young students.

The arts could deliver information to students, especially to those attending primary schools, in a way that words in textbooks sometimes cannot. Children may become bored and tired if they have to read or listen to too much educational content in textbooks. A colorful painting or a catchy song, on the other hand, can be much more appealing and thus more effective in conveying information to these children. For example, the Ghen Covy song has been taught at most schools in Vietnam and has become one of children’s favorite songs. This song has effectively highlighted the importance of hand washing as a means of disease prevention, and has made it easier for many children to remember every step of hand sanitization for its catchy melody and appealing dancing moves.

Furthermore, the study of arts is one factor that contributes to a comprehensive development of young students. While academic subjects focus on children’s cognitive development, arts education help children to develop their social-emotional skills. By singing a song or drawing a picture, these children are likely to express their feelings and nurture their sense of community. For example, thousands of Vietnamese children, who were encouraged by their teaching staff, drew pictures of sunflowers to deliver messages of love and support for pediatric cancer patients.

In conclusion, the arts can sometimes be better at transmitting knowledge than textbooks, and the provision of both academic and arts education is necessary for an all-rounded growth of young students. I firmly believe that the study of arts should never be underestimated in any child educational institution.

Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they should only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Some would argue that all students in universities have to study the subject they like, while others think that they have to only study something useful for their future, for example, those related to science and technology sectors. Although learning about the latter subjects is crucial to secure a good job and salary, I believe that enrollment in whatever subject they favor leads to students being successful in their fields.

Studying science and technology during third-level education makes students able to easily find a job that pays high wages. That is to say, working in the majority of modern workplaces requires up-to-date technological information aiming to improve the quality of work and to compete with others, and, in turn, those employees will earn good remuneration. For instance, many IT graduates from the University of Toronto were able to have high positions and good wages in many renowned business companies. However, I think that the passion for what students study is more important than how much their earnings are in the future.

It is very important for university students to study the subjects they like because this is the reason behind a successful career. That is because the love for this particular subject allows them to go beyond their limits, be creative, and be eager to improve, and, thus, they might be promoted. For instance, many well-known musicians decided to study music because they were passionate about it and this positive spirit helps them climb their professional ladder. Therefore, I support this school of thought because studying a favorite subject is more important.

To conclude, despite the fact that a course in science and technology can provide postgraduates with a good future career and enough income, in my view, studying whatever they prefer is better because this leads to success in their field.

In some countries, younger people are neglecting their right to vote.

What problems does this cause and what are some of the possible solutions?

It is argued that in certain nations youth are not using their right to vote. This would hinder the political change, and it would also result in policies made that are not beneficial for these young people. The most viable solutions would be to create awareness among the younger generation and promote them to participate in politics. 

Not participating in elections would mean that it would be difficult to change the government which is necessary for some countries across the globe. This is because, in any functional democracy, the only way to change the ruling party is by casting votes in the electoral process. Furthermore, if young individuals forge their right to vote, it would result in policies made that do not benefit them. As a result, they would feel that the state is not addressing their concerns and end up leaving the country. For instance, every year thousands of young adults from developing countries immigrate to Europe and North America because they are unhappy with their government’s performance.

One way to tackle these issues is to inform these people about the power of vote. Campaigns should be held in universities, and colleges to educate youth about their political rights. Another solution is to promote these young people to come into politics. Doing this it would ensure their representation and their voices being heard. For example, Nelson Mandela was a young political activist who successfully fought against racism and became the first black President of South Africa.

In conclusion, neglecting to vote by the young generation would delay the necessary government change, and laws made that are not in their favor. However, encouraging youth participation in politics and awareness campaigns can be possible solutions to tackle these problems.

In certain parts of the world, the younger generation is not using their right to vote.

This phenomenon may result in younger people being apathetic toward politics and election results that do not reflect public opinion, and the most viable solutions are to educate younger people about the importance of voting and incentivize them to vote.

One major problem of this is that younger people may adopt an uncaring attitude toward politics. If younger people do not take part in the election, which is the most significant political event, they are unlikely to pay heed to anything related to politics later on. Another issue is that the result of the election might be undermined. Since only older people give their votes, the winner may not be the one that the majority want to put in charge. For example, it is commonly seen in my country that politicians with older supporters tend to win again candidates that appeal to the young since most of them do not give their votes.

One suitable solution for this is to run a public awareness campaign to emphasize to younger people the significance of voting. Once they realize that if they abandon their right to vote, the consequences will be immense, they will change their minds and begin to vote. Another way to overcome this is to provide them with certain incentives to start voting. Many younger people find voting a waste of time and, therefore, if they are given incentives, they are more likely to take the time to vote. For instance, younger people in my country are often given a small amount of money as a way of motivating them to vote.

In conclusion, the problems that may stem from this are younger people’s indifferent attitude toward political matters and an ineffective election, and some ways to deal with them are educating and incentivizing younger people to vote.

Some people say that the best way to improve public health is by increasing the number of sports facilities. Others, however, say that this would have little effect on public health and that other measures are required. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

It is argued that the sports facilities should be increased in number to improve citizens’ health, while others claim that other initiatives are more essential to be conducted. While I support the idea that installing more sports facilities would help ordinary people to enhance their general health, I am more convinced that other effective measures should be taken. 

On the one hand, people’s general health status could have been improved greatly via exercising. It is proven that working out fastens the amount of oxygen to the brain, helping people be more concentrative and optimistic. Therefore, lack of physical exercise or insufficient physical movements one’s working performance may be impacted and less productive. For example, Hanoi citizens are reported to be healthier than they were because of the availability of exercise equipment right at the local parts. However, I believe that this measure just improves partially not whole the public’s health. 

On the other hand, there is a wide range of conducts to prevents poor health conditions. Improving diet quality is one of the effective measures that should not be neglected. A good physical health is indeed contributed by many elements, and a full nutrient meal makes consumers stronger and strongly resistant to some diseases. In Vietnam, there used to be a program of introducing milk into daily meals to deter malnutrition for children. After 2 years of conducting this campaign, the number of underweight children was minimised noticeably. Therefore, I completely advocate other solutions to implement to warrant the public’s general health. 

In conclusion, although launching more sports facilities would benefit the overall health of citizens, I think that this matter could be addressed better by other methods.

Some people think that it is better to educate boys and girls in separate schools. Others, however, believe that boys and girls benefit more from attending mixed schools. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

A number of people argue that it is better for boys and girls to get an education from different schools, while others believe that it is more beneficial for children if they attend combined schools. Although studying in separate schools will help boys and girls to focus more on their studies, I believe learning from co-educational institutions will help them to become more social in society. 

On the one hand, when boys and girls attend separate schools, they will spend more time focusing on their studies. This is because there will not be any opposite gender to be attracted to and to get involved in any affairs. The schooling hours will be fully utilised to learn something rather than being diverted from studies and spending time with the ones they might have affair with in the school. For example, in Nepal, students from St. Mary’s Girls School showed a better academic performance than the girls who completed their school years from a co-educational institution. However, I believe that children attending mixed school will learn to be more social in the future.

On the other hand, co-education is more beneficial for children because they will learn some social skills during their school years. This is to say that children of both genders will be allowed to have combined studies and will learn how to deal politely with a person of the opposite sex, an important skill which is highly accepted by society. For example, boys who finished their studies at co-educational schools showed more courtesy towards ladies by offering some help when required. For this reason, it is better for children to attend mixed schools as it helps them to learn essential social skills.

In conclusion, although educating children in separate schools will help them to focus on their studies, I believe that co-education is much better for girls and boys as they will learn essential social skills in school.

Being a celebrity, such as a famous film star or sports personality, brings problems as well as benefits. Do you think that being a celebrity brings more benefits or more problems?

Lives of celebrities, like famous movie stars or sports people, bring benefits as well as problems. Although earning huge amounts of money is an advantage for celebrities, I believe the lack of privacy in their lives is a major problem that outweighs the benefit. 

The main advantage for celebrities is that they receive a huge remuneration. That is to say, such people are paid large amounts of money for their efforts or performance. Celebrities usually decide how much they should be paid, and the people who pay them do not negotiate as they are confident in their star value. For example, Avengers star casts were paid in high amounts even before they read the script of the film series because of their previous performances in the older series. However, I think celebrities are also human beings and money cannot replace the happiness or freedom they need in their lives.

One of the downsides of being a celebrity is that it is not possible for them to lead a private life. This means that because of their fame and popularity, they are continuously followed by the media, and by their fans who eagerly wait to know what is happening in their favorite stars’ lives. As such, celebrities lose their freedom and cannot enjoy their personal time with their families or friends. For instance, when Sachin Tendulkar became famous after his remarkable performance in cricket, he claimed that he could not walk down the streets of Mumbai as he used to do in the past. Thus, I believe celebrities cannot be carefree, and they always have to face the media in one or the other way.

To conclude, I think the problem of being a celebrity is that their privacy is interrupted, and this overshadows the benefit of making large amounts of money as a celebrity.

Being a famous person, such as a movie star or sports athlete, has many disadvantages and advantages. Although famous people will earn more money, I believe that there are more drawbacks because famous people will not be safe in public places. 

The biggest advantage is that well-known individuals will earn loads of money. This is because they will get colossal amounts of money from their sponsors for promoting their products, such as mobile phones, laptops or cars. As a result, notable individuals will become affluent around the nation. Floyd Mayweather, for instance, is a famous boxer as well as a wealthy person in the United States of America. Each year he gets around millions of dollars from Burger Kings and Rolls Royal sponsors for promoting their products during boxing matches. However, I believe that famous celebrities face huge problems whenever they go out because their frenzied fans will annoy them.

The major drawback is that famous individuals’ lives will be in danger in common places. This is because their foes will try to harm them whenever they go out either alone or with their family members, such as in parks or malls. As a result, they will have to hire some security guards to protect themselves against vicious-minded individuals. Jennifer Lopez, for instance, always goes out with five bodyguards. The reason is that in the past, some deranged fans attacked her in New York park and broke her left arm. The primary downside of putting more focus on economic development than other concerns by governments is that environments will be polluted. This is because there will be far more new-built factories for supporting the economic expansion. Without ecological concerns, the air will be polluted from carbon dioxide and fumes which are emitted from these factories, and rivers will be polluted by industrial sewage from manufacturing and chemical processes. For example, Beijing, China, is facing a hazardous level of the air pollution caused by fuel burning and chemical reactions from industrial areas. As a clean environment is extremely vital for a human life, I therefore think that the main drawback outweighs its key benefit.

To conclude, although people will earn higher income if the government prioritises the economic sector rather than other sectors, the serious drawback as pollution problems far outweighs the advantage.

In recent years, advancements in technology have changed how people connect with each other. This has turned people into making much more friends but has also reduced the depth of those relationships. In my opinion, this is a harmful change due to the fact that it makes human less able to communicate their personal feelings.

Technology’s influence has enabled people to make much more friends than they possibly could in the past. This is largely owing to social media, which revolutionizes communication and helps people to keep touch with each other regardless of their geographical locations. Another change in human relationships caused by modern technology is that the number of intimate relationships made has been substantially less significant. With so many people to care about, social media deters users from strengthening bonds. For instance, a stark difference can be observed in Vietnam, where most young adults 20 years ago – when the internet was underdeveloped, had much deeper connections than their modern counterparts.

The changes made to the types of relationships people make nowadays is largely a disadvantageous one, for it deters people from having deep connections. Lacking valuable bonds means that they have almost no one to confide during depressive episodes that are inevitable for most humans, and thereby increase the possibility of making unwise decisions. Examples of this can be found all over the world, where the cases of depression that cause suicidal behaviors are becoming more and more common, and one of the primary contributing factors is victims having no one to share their burdens with. 

In conclusion, despite having much more ability to connect, people are making less meaningful relationships; thus, the quality of relationships diminishes and harms their wellbeing.

Nowadays, passion for a journey from one place to another has been increasing among people. This essay will first discuss that an increasing number of tour packages is the prominent reason behind this, and it will then explain that cultural awareness and being healthy are the two prime advantages of this.

Many tour companies around the world are enticing people to travel more than ever before. That is to say, people are being offered appealing and discounted tour packages, especially during the holiday season, to explore other places. Whereas in the past travelling was very expensive and people could not afford it; however, these companies have made it possible to visit one place to another by spending a small chunk of money. For example, Travel Magazine estimated that more than 40% of Australian people travelled nationally and internationally, in the year 2019, because of cheap tour deals they grabbed from the Flight centre.

The first major benefit of travelling is that it allows a traveller to know about different cultures. By visiting other parts of the world, people get an opportunity to experience the various culture, cuisines and languages. The other significant advantage is stress relaxation through holidays. This is especially true for a significant number of people who are working many hours a week to earn their livings. During holidays, they choose to travel to different destinations around the world, and this greatly helps them to relieve their stress and keep their health in a sound condition. For example, a recent study by the Indian Medical Institute concluded that frequent travellers are happier and more satisfied with their life than those who do not.

In conclusion, people travel more often than in the past because of the tour deals they are being offered, and travelling does not only provide a traveller with knowledge about a different culture, but it also helps them to stay away from a hectic schedule

In recent years, the operation of big corporations is ubiquitous in developing nations. The essay will first suggest that economic growth is the prime benefit, while the excessive use of emergent nations’ natural resources is the main drawback.

One evident benefit of the operation of transitional companies in less developed countries is the prosperity of the local economy. That is to say, multination companies provide an inflow of capital into developing countries. This investment not only creates job opportunities for the people in developing nations, but it also helps to build better infrastructure, such as bridges, roads, and transportation facilities, for them. For example, the role of Foreign Direct Investment in the year 2010 was undeniable because it uplifted the Indian economy so fast and increased GDP and created so many jobs for locals. 

The prime disadvantage is that these companies use the natural resources of developing nations recklessly, which affects the environment. In other words, Smaller, less developed governments often trade an increase in revenue for access to natural resources. This extraction of raw materials, such as oil, diamond, rubber and fuel, can cause environmental externalities- polluted rivers and loss of natural landscape. For instance, many Chinese private enterprises have been heavily criticised for using the resources of countries like Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippine and for polluting the environment.

In conclusion, huge global companies benefit less developed nation economically is the prime advantage of this, and the extraction of raw materials for the sake of profit is the main disadvantage.

How To Use IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample Essays

IELTS Writing Task 2 sample essays can be a great resource for students preparing for the test. However, it’s important to use them correctly in order to get the most out of them. Here are some steps students can take to make the most of these samples:

• Understand the question: Before looking at any sample essays, make sure you understand the question you’ll be answering on the test. This will help you focus on the relevant parts of the sample essays and understand how to apply the strategies used in them to your own writing.
• Analyze the structure: Look at the structure of the sample essays, paying close attention to how the writer has organized their ideas. Make note of the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion and how they are linked.

Robert Allen Buckland

GLADSTONE — Robert Allen Buckland, age 76, of Gladstone (Flat Rock) passed away Friday, March 15, 2024 at his home in Flat Rock. He was born September 25, 1947 in Escanaba, Mich. and was the son of Bernard and Anna (Delvaux) Buckland. Bob graduated from Escanaba from Escanaba High School in 1965 and then served in the U.S. Navy from December 28, 1966 until he was honorably discharged on September 22, 1970. He was employed with Mead Paper Company (New Page) from December 6, 1971 until his retirement on March1, 2010. Bob enjoyed life and always liked a good time! He enjoyed spending time in his garden, cutting grass, playing pool, shooting darts and snowmobiling.

Bob is survived by his brothers, Don (Judy) Buckland of Houston, Texas and Mike (Diane) Buckland of Spalding, Mich. and several nieces and nephews.

Veteran’s services will be conducted by the Delta County Veterans Council at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 22 at the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells. The Anderson Funeral Homes of Escanaba and Gladstone are assisting the Buckland family with the arrangements and online condolences can be sent to the family at www.andersonfuneralhomes.net .

Houston Cougars’ Top 10 Returning Players in 2024 Include Donovan Smith, A.J. Haulcy

W illie Fritz takes over a Houston Cougars program in a rough place, but he’s already retooled the roster to get them back on track. A good mix of returning talent plus incoming transfers will contribute in 2024, and we look at the top 10 players returning to college football with Houston that will help Fritz’s cause.

Houston Cougars’ Top 10 Returners in 2024

Analyzing the returning players at every school is a difficult task in the transfer portal area. As such, we’ve included transfer-portal athletes on each team’s roster page to open spring camp in addition to the rostered players from last year.

10) Jeremiah Wilson, CB

It’s no secret that the Houston Cougars must improve against the pass. After finishing 117th in pass defense last year, Fritz went out and found a few players to compete for starting spots on the back end of the defense.

While Syracuse finished 79th in pass defense, their track record has been more consistent than the Cougars. Jeremiah Wilson worked into the rotation for the Orange last year, posting five passes defended and one interception. With the new direction on the Cougars’ defense, the staff expects him to immediately compete for one of the starting spots.

9) Teagan Wilk, S

A wildly underrated addition in the portal. Staying on the field will be Teagan Wilk’s biggest obstacle, but we’ve seen exciting things from him when he is healthy. The former ECU safety was a multiyear starter for an underrated Pirates defense, and he now joins a secondary that could use experienced players.

8) Joseph Manjack IV, WR

Some might call him a psychopath for not wearing gloves as a receiver, but you could argue that Joseph Manjack IV doesn’t need them. He’s capable of making highlight reel catches with just his bare hands, and he returns to an offense that should be fun to watch throw the ball downfield.

7) Maliq Carr, TE

The tight end position has been underwhelming for the Cougars offense for a while now, and the fanbase hopes that Fritz and his staff can fix that. One of the more intriguing additions from the portal was former Michigan State tight end Maliq Carr.

At 6’3″ and 245 pounds, he brings a good frame to the offense, along with 711 yards and five touchdowns from his four seasons in East Lansing. With the wide receiver position largely set, Carr’s presence could have a significant impact on the passing attack.

6) Kendre Gant, LB

A natural playmaker, Kendre Gant comes from Louisiana to be a starter for the Cougars defense. Gant produced his best season in 2023 with 64 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and six sacks, and now takes on a new challenge of competing in the Big 12.

As a leader for the Ragin’ Cajuns defense, Gant also produced three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries last year. He knew how to get to the football and how to dislodge the ball carrier from the ball. If he can repeat that success with his new school, he’ll help inject energy into a group that needs it.

5) Parker Jenkins, RB

If you don’t know the name Parker Jenkins yet, get familiar with him. When the Cougars lost Alton McCaskill to the transfer portal, it left a huge hole at the position. Fortunately for them, Jenkins was waiting for his chance. A promising first season leads many to believe this will be a breakout year for their star running back.

Even in early practices, Jenkins was breaking ankles and running hard. That transitioned to the regular season, where he led the team with 464 yards and three touchdowns. Fans hope that Fritz can put more of an emphasis on the rushing attack this year because it seems criminal to let a talent like Jenkins go to waste.

4) Samuel Brown, WR

Losing Tank Dell was always going to hurt, but the Cougars did well finding ways to replace his production. Transfers were a big help in that regard, and former West Virginia transfer Samuel Brown inserted himself into the rotation quickly.

Brown led the team last year with 62 catches and 815 yards. Now, he has his sights set on a 1,000-yard season. The 6’2″ and 200-pound receiver has taken great strides in these two seasons with the Cougars, and he should achieve his goals once he becomes familiar with the new offense.

3) Keith Cooper, DE

Losing Brian Early to Missouri hurt this team more than any other departure, but Fritz and his staff continue working to lessen that blow. There’s still plenty of talent returning, and the staff even brought some familiar faces to campus.

Keith Cooper posted his best season in 2023 with career highs in tackles, tackles for loss, and sacks. At 6’4″ and 260 pounds, he has a good frame to compete in the Big 12 and should help the younger players around him get up to speed.

2) AJ Haulcy, S

The Houston native returned home after a year with the New Mexico Lobos, and he led the team in tackles in his first season. A.J. Haulcy is a leader in the secondary, and the staff should be excited about his potential in their system.

Defensive coordinator Shiel Wood showed at Tulane that he can find creative ways to get his safeties involved in the game plan, and now he has one of the more intriguing players in the Big 12 heading into 2024.

1) Donovan Smith, QB

There will be a quarterback competition heading into the season, but it’s tough to deny Donovan Smith’s talent. Louisiana transfer Zeon Chriss will challenge him, but the 6’5″ and 235-pound Smith brings things to the table that others cannot.

Smith is recovering from an injury, allowing Chriss to get comfortable and learn the system better. Once Smith is back, we’ll get a full picture of where things stand, and both players should help elevate the offense with their skill sets.

The former Texas Tech Red Raider threw for 2,801 yards and 22 touchdowns last year but also threw 13 interceptions. Fritz and his staff helped former Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt become a good decision-maker, so the fanbase is hoping the same can be done for Smith. If so, this offense could take off in 2024.

Tall Final Four task: Beating reigning champion UConn will not be an easy task in the desert

The 2024 version of March Madness has apexed with a trio of streak busters in the desert.

N.C. State is in the Final Four for the first time since Jim Valvano ran around trying to find someone to hug after the 1983 national championship. Purdue and big man Zach Edey will make their first Final Four appearance since Joe Barry Carroll dominated the paint in 1980.

Alabama ? Never been.

An angry pack of Huskies awaits them in the Valley of the Sun.

Dominating on its way to a fifth national championship a year ago, UConn has looked even more unbeatable so far in its run to become the first repeat champion since Florida in 2006-07.

“Our defense is elite. Our offense is elite. We rebound the ball,” UConn coach Dan Hurley said. “These guys play every possession like it’s the end of the world.”

The Huskies have done nothing but end opponents’ hopes through consecutive dominating March runs.

UConn steamrolled its way through the 2023 bracket , winning each game by at least 13 points. That was the best since Indiana in 1981.

These Huskies may be better.

With 7-foot-2 Donovan Clingan in the middle and talent across the roster, UConn won its first four NCAA Tournament games by an average of 27.7 points. The Huskies made Illinois look like a JV team in the Elite Eight, reeling off 30 — yes, 30 — straight points in a 77-52 victory to become the first reigning champion to reach the Final Four since Florida’s consecutive titles.

Knocking off UConn will be a monumental task in Glendale, Arizona, starting with Alabama in the semifinals Saturday.

“His (Hurley’s) formula is working out pretty well,” Alabama coach Nate Oats said. “I’m going to have to figure out that formula myself here soon.”

Oats already has sorted a few things figured out.

The Crimson Tide lost in the Sweet 16 last season, then most of its roster. Oats had three returning players and replaced three assistants who left for head coaching jobs.

Playing fast and letting 3s fly from all over, Alabama led the nation in scoring during the regular season and has kept up the pace in March. Led by heady, gritty point guard Mark Sears, the Crimson Tide scored at least 89 points in three of four NCAA Tournament games, including 109 in the opener against Charleston.

Alabama reached its first Final Four by making 16 3-pointers in an 89-82 win over Clemson in the Elite Eight.

“Guys bought in — we can make this run, other teams have done it,” Oats said. “We have the capability to do it.”

The first national semifinal on Saturday will be big — as in more than 14 feet and 575 pounds of men in the paint.

Purdue has college basketball’s most unstoppable force in Edey.

At 7-4, he didn’t need a ladder to cut down the nets in Detroit and has the skill to go with his size. Edey was the AP national player of the year last year and the front-runner to become the first player to repeat since Virginia’s Ralph Sampson earned it three straight years from 1980-83.

Edey has been nearly unguardable in the NCAA Tournament, becoming the first player since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then known as Lew Alcindor) in 1968 to have at least 50 points and 35 rebounds while shooting 65% from the field the first two games of an NCAA Tournament.

Edey topped that with a career-high 40 points and 16 rebounds in a 72-66 win over Tennessee that sent the Boilermakers to the Final Four a year after making history by losing to a No. 16 seed.

“Zach’s got a competitive fight to him. He doesn’t back down,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “When you have that elite physical size and you have that competitive spirit with it, with some skill, it’s pretty dangerous. He’s pretty hard to handle.”

So is N.C. State’s DJ Burns Jr.

The 6-9, 275-pounder has a big-sized game and a personality to go with it. He’s the focal point of the Wolfpack offense and opponents have yet to find a way to stop him.

Burns has great footwork, a soft touch and vision to find the open man nearly every time. Combined with the team’s other DJ , Arizona State transfer DJ Horne, N.C. State won five games in five days just to get into the NCAA Tournament and kept rolling into the Final Four as a No. 11 seed.

“DJ Burns has been around for a long time, but his personality, his play has really opened eyes of a lot of folks around the country,” N.C. State coach Kevin Keatts said.

Now the Wolfpack get to play in the game’s biggest spotlight with two other teams who ended long droughts — and a fourth vying for a place in history.
