One would think making a movie about racial unjust would be the simplest thing to do, but here comes Texas Red (2021) and completely misses the mood.

Texas Red had all of the right elements to be something actually quite good, but the lack of stable direction really hurts this movie badly. I really wanted to like this movie, but I just couldn’t get into it hardly. It just felt really half hearted and at points really uninteresting to me. Again, direction was NOT good.
The CAST was fine I thought and gave some solid performances, but once again the half baked direction and script somewhat hindered them. I thought Texas Red had a lot of potential, but it just didn’t grab me like I was hoping for.

Texas Red (Action, History, Western) [Based on a True Story] (2021)
Director: Travis Mills
Writer: Travis Mills, Don Simonton (Based on book by/Co-Writer)
Stars: Cedric Burnside, Calvin Williams, Johnny McPhail, Anquanizia Hall
Based on a real person and true events, "Texas Red" starts in a small town with different ethnicities intermingling and supposedly living in a fair and peaceful community. In the opening scene, we're treated to a cosy bar with people singing and dancing to bluesy rhythms not long before everyone eventually dissipates to their own homes, and that's where the plot kicks off.
With the simple tale and the storyline written for it, director Travis Mills tries to create an engaging film worthy of the historical events the movie is based upon. Without much budget to speak of, the team does fairly well with its patchy and cobbled together costumes and a soundtrack that pairs the 1940's setting with its bluesy cadences. The old-fashioned theme with the vibes of an old-school western despite the story taking place years after the American frontier works, even if it doesn't quite stack up to the classics.
It is a novel film for what limited budget it had, being one of twelve different westerns films Mills tried to make during 2020 (this one releasing in 2021). Supported by amateur filmmakers and actors alike, the respectable attempt regrettably does fall flat; the acting is unimaginably spotty with none of it good. Some major roles are half-way decent, but most dialogue is cringe-worthy. The barebones script doesn't do much to relieve the story or dialogue and cannot incentivise the viewer to stay interested. At no point was there any rhyme or reason for chasing Texas Red, apart from racist morals by some characters, all in all, it seems to be nothing more than racism for racism's sake, diminishing this film to be even a footnote compared to the profound, intense films with such a setting that we've seen before.
Unlike this film's plot, don't hunt down "Texas Red", It just isn't worth it.

Once Upon a Time in a Western
Texas red (2021).
He and good friend The Oklahoma Kid (Herman Jr. Johnson) are suspected in a series of robberies.
So a new constable named Angus (William Shannon Williams) rounds up a posses, finds a guide to point the way to Red’s house and calls the men out.
Instead, a gun battle breaks out. And The Oklahoma Kid fatally wounds a young deputy.
From that point on, Texas Red is on the run from the law, fleeing through the Mississippi swamps and backwoods, occassionally getting a helping hand from other blacks who have heard about his plight.
He’s desperate to avoid detection by anyone. But to most white folks, he’s a dangerous criminal. To the governor, his ability to alude authorities is becoming an embarrassment.
Which simply means the manhunt to round up Texas Red intensifies.

Herman Jr. Johnson as The Oklahoma Kid, the other black man on the run in Texas Red (2021)
This film is part of director Travis Mills’ 12 Westerns in 12 Months series, though given the setting and the time period, it barely qualifies as a Western.
That said, it is the most lavish of Mills’ releases from the series to date. And it’s based on a true story about a manhunt that eventually included the FBI and the National Guard.
William Shannon Williams does an excellent job as the bigoted constable who starts all the trouble. And Nick Murphy and Ward Emling are solid as lawman who unsuccessfully try to defuse the situation before the violence starts.

The Oklahoma Kid, on his path of escape: “Figure things might be kinder out West.” Texas Red: “I don’t think there’s a kind place out there anywhere. For us, that is.”
The Oklahoma Kid: “Maybe it’s time for the Oklahoma Kid to become the Oklahoma man. Why don’t you come with me?” Texas Red: “I ain’t goin’. It’s as much my state as it is their’s.”

Filmmaker turns fascination with Mississippi culture into feature films
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - From a juke joint owner on the run to tales of the Dixie Mafia operating on the Gulf Coast, Mississippi has quite a few stories to tell, and director/filmmaker Travis Mills is helping to tell them.
Mills’ latest feature film, “Texas Red,” opens locally on Feb. 5 at Cinemark Theater in Pearl. Tickets are sold out for the Feb. 5 and 6 showings, but are still available for the Feb. 12 showing.
Drive-through screenings of Texas Red also will be shown on Feb. 25 and 27, prior to Oxford Film Festival in March.
The movie is one of 12 westerns that Mills shot in 2020, and one of several movies the Ecuadorian-born director has filmed in the Magnolia State. He co-wrote the film with D.M.M. Simonton.
Mills says he was attracted to the legend of Texas Red because it’s a true Mississippi story.
“I was immediately taken by the story of outlaws and lawmen set in a different time than the Old West,” he said. “You can see the side of the African American people who are on the run, and also the white lawmen, some of whom are just trying to do their jobs.”
Texas Red is the true story of a Black juke joint owner who was accused of several robberies in Frankin County.
“His cabin was raided by some white citizens who were unhappy with him,” Mills said. “They raided his cabin that night without a warrant, a fight broke out, someone was hurt and from there, a giant manhunt was started for this guy.”
The hunt eventually went through several counties, and numerous local lawmen, the FBI and National Guard got involved.
“It’s still not confirmed whether Texas Red and his partner, the Oklahoma Kid, were robbing places or not,” Mills said. “Who knows if the people who were angry with him made the correct accusations?
“We will probably never know at this point. A lot of history like that is lost,” he said. “It wasn’t confirmed at the time and it can’t be confirmed now.”
“Texas Red” is the second film being released as part of Mills’ 12 Westerns in 12 Months project, a project that his production team took on 2020, prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“None of us saw COVID coming,” he said. “When we saw it, we had to change significantly. As we encountered the pandemic, some projects completely changed. Some got pushed to the side and replaced.”
“I’m very proud no one got sick on our sets. Not a single person was confirmed to be infected on any of our 12 western sets.”
In January, Running Wild Films and 12 Westerns LLC released the first film “Bastard’s Crossing.”
Four of the films were made in the Magnolia State and most of them feature local actors.
“I try to cast locally as much as possible. I really think that’s one of the problems with the Hollywood movies made about the South. It’s mostly New York and L.A. actors playing Southern characters; no matter how good their accents are it’s not authentic,” he said. “(We) really try to stay authentic to these characters.”
This year, Mills will be spending his time editing the movies - a process that’s almost as intense as shooting the films - and is working on additional projects, including a TV western series and a movie focusing on the rock-n-roll scene in 1960s Brookhaven.
“My mother is originally from Mississippi. She was born and raised in Brookhaven. My grandparents lived in Brookhaven and were originally from Monticello,” he said. “So, I have deep Mississippi roots.”
Mills’ first Mississippi film was “Porches and Private Eyes,” a 2016 flick based in Brookhaven, where three women work to solve a local disappearance, according to the Internet Movie Database.
“That turned into an indie success and led me to make more films,” he said. “I’m just fascinated with the culture of the South.”

‘civil war’ unites audiences from red and blue states.
The controversial indie film — which opened to an impressive $25.7 million — is drawing an equal number of conservatives and liberals, in a surprise twist.

Alex Garland ’s dystopian Civil War , about America torn asunder by a president run amok and brutal acts of war committed on ordinary citizens, sparked plenty of speculation — and assumptions — heading into its debut in theaters over the April 12-14 weekend.
Related Stories
Amc theatres' new distribution business hires fandango veteran stephanie terifay, box office: the lupita nyong'o-voiced 'wild robot' makes small change to september release date.
In a surprise twist, Civil War played exactly down the middle as both sides put aside their differences and sat together in cinemas across the country to see for themselves what all the buzz was about. Precisely 50 percent of ticket buyers identified as conservative and the other 50 percent as liberal, according to final exit polling data from the weekend. A24 is notoriously media-averse, but a source close to the project shared the post-weekend findings with THR .
Rival studio execs readily confirm that Civil War played well in blue states and in red states. “Both sides were interested. A24 did a good job of not leaning in either way politically,” says a distribution chief at another studio.
Garland’s film opened to a notably better-than-expected $25.7 million, a record for A24. The $50 million movie is the indie studio’s biggest swing to date. In keeping with its penchant for using film to spark conversation, it never intended to make a movie that glorified one political party or another — to the point that some liberals were upset.
“ Civil War is an abrasive and uncomfortable film, not because it fully subscribes to any particular ideology, but because it doesn’t — and we hate not having clearly defined sides to root for or against or media that doesn’t perfectly align with our worldview so we can walk out of the theater confidently knowing we’re a good person,” wrote columnist Richard Newby for The Hollywood Reporter .
Markets where the majority of the audience skewed moderate or conservative included Phoenix, Arizona; Kansas City, Missouri; and Dallas, Texas.
Civil War over-indexed in a number of high-grossing smaller markets that lean conservative, including Sacramento, California; El Paso, Texas; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Waco and Brownsville, Texas; and Colorado Springs, Colorado. In terms of liberal-leaning markets, Civil War over-indexed in Portland, Oregon.
And, interestingly, the data show that 70 percent of ticket buyers in Denver, Kansas City and Phoenix were military “adjacent,” meaning they had a family member or friend in the military. Another notable tidbit: The oldest audience by far was in Kansas City, a conservative-leaning market where 55 percent of ticket buyers were 35 or older.
Civil War ’s subject matter was the top draw, with more of the audience citing the political dystopian storyline as the reason for showing up than either its action or an interest in indie films, although by a relatively narrow margin (each grouping made up around one-third of the audience, but subject matter was the highest).
The action component helped the film play well across all major markets, while cinephiles turned out in force in indie strongholds including L.A. and New York City.
Civil War follows a wartime photojournalist ( Kirsten Dunst ) and her colleagues as they make their way across a hostile United States of America that has been torn between the forces of the United States and the secessionists known as The Western Front, comprising California and Texas. The Western Front is fighting the authoritarian rule of a three-term president (Nick Offerman) who has disbanded the FBI.
Civil War ‘s first trailer turned heads with the revelation that California and Texas were allies, despite their real-life political differences. Those who know how A24 operates say the studio probably considers the film’s B- CinemaScore a badge of honor because it wants its films to be divisive. Certainly, it seems to have sparked plenty of conversation.
“It played well everywhere,” says a rival studio executive as he ticked off the top-grossing markets, led by Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, Washington, D.C., Toronto, Denver and Phoenix.

Democrats hope to regain control of a South Texas district but Republicans say the area is no longer blue. Both Democrats and Republicans have targeted that part of Texas.
MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:
The mostly red state of Texas has just one competitive congressional district this year, and both Republicans and Democrats have targeted that part of South Texas. NPR congressional correspondent Claudia Grisales has this report.
UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: Order for Tibs (ph).
CLAUDIA GRISALES, BYLINE: At a McAllen, Texas, coffee shop, Democrat Michelle Vallejo is hammering a key message in a race to win back the state's 15th congressional district.
MICHELLE VALLEJO: Pay attention to South Texas because we are going to be a pivotal race not just for the state but for our entire country.
GRISALES: This is a comeback bid for Vallejo, a local small business owner. Democrats lost this traditionally blue district in the last election cycle after state redistricting, but they're betting they can win it back this year. Both the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the party's campaign arm for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus are among the groups upping their investments to support Vallejo.
VALLEJO: We have a lot of work to do here, but I know that with all of the support of our community and supporters outside of our region, we could get this done.
GRISALES: A lot of work is facing both Democrats and Republicans in the fight for the state's 15th congressional district, which runs north from the McAllen border region to the outskirts of San Antonio. Texas Republican Monica De La Cruz, who flipped the seat in 2022, says Democrats' path to a majority will not go through her district. Here's De La Cruz on Capitol Hill.
MONICA DE LA CRUZ: We've got boots on the ground from my campaign both putting up a campaign office both in the south of the district and in the north of the district.
GRISALES: Republican successes across Texas have come by way of some pockets of Latino voters, fueled by their more conservative positions on issues like the U.S.-Mexico border. And that's especially top of mind here. Experts say the region is well-known for its Tejano voters who are right of center politically, culturally and socially. Alvaro Corral, politics professor at the University of Texas in the Rio Grande Valley, says that has created a key opportunity for the GOP.
ALVARO CORRAL: The Republicans have built a sort of more solid base of support among Latinos in the state slowly, gradually, incrementally.
GRISALES: And with this year's election, former President Trump is expected to pull in Republican voters. That adds to GOP advantages across the state. Texas' 15th was previously a Democratic stronghold, but with new lines drawn in 2021, it flipped from a President Biden district to one that now favors Trump.
BRANDON ROTTINGHAUS: The gerrymandering issue definitely hems in the Democrats.
GRISALES: That's Brandon Rottinghaus, politics professor at the University of Houston.
ROTTINGHAUS: The structure makes it hard for Democrats to be able to overcome some of those built-in advantages that Republicans have.
GRISALES: Back on Capitol Hill, Representative De La Cruz is taking on a bigger role within her party, including some very public opportunities to highlight her district. Earlier this year, the former insurance agent turned lawmaker gave the Spanish-language rebuttal to Biden's State of the Union address. She recently told NPR she thinks her efforts are paying off.
DE LA CRUZ: Think that it is the policies that are moving us forward and moving the bluest part of the district to red.
GRISALES: If De La Cruz pulls off another win against Vallejo in this year's fight, it could help Republicans hold onto the U.S. House and signal more opportunities for the GOP to expand their reach in what was once a Democratic stronghold.

Even though it takes place around 1940 in the Deep South, it still feels like a Posse Western, and still challenges our views of civil rights. This is well shot and directed. Several actors like Burnside, Johnson, and Hall give believable, emotional performances. 16 out of 36 found this helpful.
