  • UPSC Books For Optional Subjects

Highlights of UPSC Notes 2.0 by Unacademy

Upsc book list for optional subjects , the value of upsc preparation books.

  • All the UPSC Questions asked in the Mains Examination from 2013-2020 are integrated into Notes 2.0. Learning PYQs will help learners understand the demand of exams.
  • Also, UPSC has a tendency to repeat a few questions. For example, UPSC has repeatedly asked questions about the difference between Indian and Western Secularism, similarly, questions on issues related to Urban Flooding have been asked repeatedly. Learning PYQs will help in addressing such answers.
  • Mindmaps and Timelines: High-yield information has been compressed in the form of tables, flowcharts, bullet points and timelines, these things will help one memorise and recall the information in an easier way. This will be particularly useful for revision. Rather than revising entire chapter, learners can revise a page.
  • Contemporary issues are comprehensively covered in Notes – For example, the Taliban takeover over Afghanistan, Supreme Court on Internet Suspension, Quota within SC Quota for deprived Scheduled Castes, and debates around Indian secularism are covered.
  • Critical opinion topics are covered in Notes – The majority of questions asked in the UPSC Mains examination are opinion-based, we have tried to inculcate the same in Notes 2.0. For example, topics like – Why did Congress accept the partition of India? Could the partition of India be avoided? has been covered in Notes 2.0.
  • Wisdom Nuggets: Notes 2.0 is also embedded with wisdom nuggets. For example, Did the British give India Political Unity?
  • Thin and crispy books so that working professionals can easily finish small topics like Disaster Management, Post-Independence and World history. Books are easy to read and revise
  • As contemporary issues, theory, critical opinion-based issues and PYQs are covered in Notes 2.0, it saves learners time and money to buy individual books
  • Good quality paper quality and binding, even if a learner highlights using pen or highlighter it wouldn’t spoil the pages.

Unacademy, India’s leading learning platform, also offers study material online to help candidates boost their UPSC exam preparation . Check out the website to access our world-class study material for UPSC curated by the Top Educators of Unacademy.

  • Practice and Revision : Many IAS books include practice questions, previous years’ papers, and revision notes, enabling candidates to test their knowledge and revise effectively.

LexisNexis India, a leading publisher of legal, tax, academic and test-prep books launched a new series for Indian Civil Services aspirants recently. These bookshave been conceptualized and designed by education industry experts based on several years of teaching and content development expertise. The new series has been published under LexisNexis test-prep imprint, ‘Catapult’. LexisNexis India is also the publisher of DD Basu’s Introduction to Constitution of India, a book that has been read and referred to by lakhs of Indian Civil Services aspirants over past several years. The civil services examination is one that has undergone significant changes in the last few years. Mere conceptual understanding is not enough and aspirants are expected to have evolved critical thinking skills and an ability to apply the learned concepts in a constructive manner. Vikesh Dhyani, Director Marketing, Customer Discovery& Innovation, LexisNexis India said, “Indian Civil Services examination is one of the most prestigious and competitive exams with an overall final selection of about 0.1% – 0.3% only. This is such a broad based and tough exam that students often struggle for sourcing the relevant and effective reading material across multiple sources. Covering the entire spectrum of syllabi for the exam is a race against time and despite the best preparation one is never too sure of the final outcome. Our goal is to equip serious aspirants by providing a comprehensive series of pedagogically enhanced books based on years’ of class room teaching and test-prep content development expertise. We are also investing in conducting free educational seminars in partnership with leading coaching institutes, faculty and past successful students to share their wisdom, tips and techniques, and success secrets with thousands of aspirants who may not have access to good coaching institutes.”

Dear friend .read ncert from 6th to 12th does not mean to memorise every page of it. The idea behind read ncert is to revise the basics of all the subject which we tend to forget . You can do selective reading for ncert but your basics need to be well prepared before exam.

How it feels if you lose 10 marks questions in prelims just becuase you forgot some basic formula of maths .

January 23, 2018 at 9:33 am

Red Book – UPSC Mains PYQs Book

UPSC Mains PYQ Book

The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) stands as one of the country’s most challenging and prestigious exams. To crack this exam, candidates need a strategic and comprehensive preparation approach. A key part of this preparation involves studying Previous Year’s Question Papers (PYQs). Hence, we’ve created the Red book – the UPSC Mains PYQ Book to offer solutions for this essential aspect.

What is the need of UPSC Mains PYQs Book?

PYQs serve as an invaluable resource for aspirants as they provide insights into the exam pattern, question types, and the level of difficulty expected in the actual examination.

By analyzing PYQs, candidates can identify their strengths and weaknesses, allowing them to focus their efforts on areas that require improvement.

Additionally, PYQs enable aspirants to develop a thorough understanding of the UPSC’s expectations and the depth of knowledge required to excel in the exam.

Issues associated with the available UPSC Mains PYQs Books

While the importance of PYQs is undeniable, candidates often face several challenges in accessing and utilizing them effectively:

Time-Consuming Analysis: Often, candidates need a quick overview of questions asked on a particular topic. However, existing books may include unnecessary details, making quick analysis difficult.

Analyzing PYQs, identifying patterns, and extracting valuable insights can be a time-consuming process, without a proper material.

Trend visibility: unnecessary details and low-quality model answers hinder quick question review. This makes it challenging for candidates to analyze year-wise and topic-wise trends.

Disorganized Format: The available PYQs may be presented in disorganized formats. They may lack proper categorization by subject, year, or difficulty level, hindering efficient preparation.

Offline availability: For candidates in remote areas or those with limited resources, accessing physical copies of PYQs can be a significant challenge, hindering their preparation.

Introducing the Ultimate Solution – UPSC Mains PYQs Red Book

To address the challenges and provide a seamless and efficient preparation experience, we have curated a one-of-a-kind book containing Year-Wise (2023-2013) and Subject-Wise PYQs for UPSC CSE preparation.

This comprehensive book offers the following benefits:

Comprehensive Collection: Our book covers a decade’s worth of PYQs from 2013 to 2023. It ensures that candidates have access to a vast repository of questions across various subjects and years.

Trend analysis: This book is the best suitable for those who wants to do a trend analysis of weightage of a subject or type of questions asked by UPSC.

Time-Saving: Our book provides a consolidated and well-structured resource. It eliminates the need for candidates to spend hours searching for and organizing PYQs. This saves valuable time for focused preparation.

Subject-Wise Organization: Questions are organized by subject and syllabus topics. This allows aspirants to focus their preparation on specific areas and track progress effectively.

Year-Wise Arrangement: Within each subject, the questions are further arranged year-wise. It will enable candidates to analyze the trend and pattern of questions over time.

Whether you are a fresher embarking on your UPSC CSE journey or an experienced aspirant seeking to refine your preparation, our Year-Wise and Subject-Wise PYQs book is an indispensable companion. Invest in this comprehensive resource today and unlock the key to mastering the UPSC CSE exam with confidence.

National Defence Academy Exam (General Ability Test) Previous Year Papers

The National Defense Academy (NDA) General Ability Test (GAT) Previous Year Papers are a priceless tool for applicants getting ready for the entrance exam. These papers offer a thorough compilation of the previous year's questions and answers on a variety of subjects, including science, politics, geography, and current events. It is recommended that candidates download these question papers in order to augment their knowledge, sharpen their comprehension of crucial information, and cultivate their proficiency in answering general knowledge questions.

NDA Exam Previous Year Questions

UPSC previous year questions are extremely helpful in the preparation process for the NDA Examination. They offer useful information about the exam format, question types, priority areas, and time management techniques. Furthermore, they help aspirants track their progress and gain confidence.

Aspirants should incorporate the practice of solving UPSC previous year papers into their study schedule, making it an integral part of their preparation strategy. This increases their chances of passing the difficult exam and fulfilling their dream of serving the country.

UPSC created NDA questions to assess candidates' analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities. Reviewing previous papers allows aspirants to identify common question structures and practice answering them effectively.

Benefits of Practising with NDA Exam Previous Year Paper

Practising with NDA previous year question papers is one of the most important steps you can take to prepare for the upcoming NDA exam. Here are some of the benefits of answering previous years question papers that you should be aware of.

  • The NDA exam is extremely competitive, and the question paper of the GAT is designed to assess your knowledge and understanding of a wide range of topics. By solving UPSC previous year question papers, you will gain a good understanding of the types of questions asked, the level of difficulty, and the time required to answer them.
  • The Mathematics questions cover a wide range of mathematical principles and topics that are fundamental to the NDA curriculum. PYPs allow aspirants to improve their understanding of the mathematical principles assessed in the NDA test, as well as their problem-solving abilities.
  • As you solve NDA previous year papers, you will begin to recognize your own strengths and weaknesses in various topics. This will allow you to focus your studies on the areas that require the most improvement.
  • Each UPSC NDA paper is a 150-minute (2 hours and 30 minutes) exam, so you must use your time wisely to answer all questions. Solving previous year's question papers will help you determine how much time you should spend on each question.
  • The more you practise, the more confident you'll be in your ability to answer exam questions. Solving NDA previous years question papers is an excellent way to boost your confidence and prepare for the exam.

How to Effectively Solve NDA PYP?

Solve NDA Previous Year Papers in the following ways to improve your performance and increase your chances of passing the exam.

Basic Techniques

  • Candidates must complete the paper within the time allotted to simulate an exam setting. Sitting in a distraction-free environment and setting a countdown timer will help.
  • Examine the exam questions from the previous year's UPSC NDA paper.
  • Always remember that incorrect answers will result in a negative marking, so avoid speculating or simply marking the answer without carefully reading the entire question.
  • When the timers go off, don't try any more questions. Compare the answers you marked to the answer key to assess your overall performance and identify any errors that need to be corrected.

Keep These Points in Mind

  • If you have diligently prepared for an exam and an answer choice appears to be completely foreign, it is most likely incorrect. In these situations, use the elimination technique. This method, while not foolproof, may help you avoid receiving negative marks on difficult questions. Rule out options that appear unlikely, thereby narrowing the options. This increases your chances of selecting the correct answer and reduces the risk of negative marking in the NDA exam.
  • Avoid guessing on the NDA exam. Blindly selecting an option may result in a negative marking in the NDA entrance exam. If you're unsure about an answer, it's usually better to leave the question unanswered rather than risk losing points.
  • The NDA exam places a strong emphasis on accuracy. Every answer you mark should be accurate and well-thought-out. To avoid careless mistakes that result in negative marks, make it a habit to double-check your responses before submitting them.

National Defence Academy Exam Overview

The UPSC conducts an NDA Examination twice a year (in April and in December), which includes a Written Examination and an SSB Interview. Candidates taking the NDA 1 and NDA 2 Examination in 2024 must be aware of important exam details.

NDA Exam Pattern

UPSC administers the written examination and the personality test is conducted by the Service Selection Board (SSB). Candidates must fully understand the exam pattern for the written exam.

1. The ART of India’s HIV/AIDS response

Syllabus: Issues Relating to Development and Management of Social Sector/Services relating to Health, Education, Human Resources

Mains: India’s success factor against HIV response

Introduction:

  • April 1, 2004, marked a pivotal moment in India’s response to HIV/AIDS with the launch of Free Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) for Persons Living with HIV (PLHIV).
  • This initiative has been instrumental in combating the HIV/AIDS epidemic in India, addressing challenges of fear, stigma, and limited access to treatment.

Evolution to Free ART:

  • Despite the emergence of antiretroviral drugs in the late 1980s and early 1990s, access remained restricted primarily to high-income countries.
  • The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, established in 2002, advocated for universal access to HIV prevention and treatment.
  • By 2004, India had an estimated 5.1 million PLHIV, with only a fraction receiving ART due to high costs and limited availability.

Implementation and Impact of Free ART:

  • The decision to offer free ART in India was groundbreaking, expanding access to treatment for adults and later for children.
  • Over two decades, the number of ART centres increased from fewer than 10 to around 700, serving approximately 1.8 million PLHIV.
  • The initiative not only initiated treatment but also focused on maintaining low viral loads, resulting in a decline in HIV prevalence and new infections by significant margins.

Patient-Centric Approach and Ongoing Challenges:

  • Alongside free ART, India implemented complementary initiatives such as free diagnostic services and prevention of parent-to-child transmission.
  • The program exhibited flexibility by evolving ART eligibility criteria and adopting a ‘Treat All’ approach from 2017 onwards.
  • Despite notable achievements, challenges remain, including delayed enrollment, adherence issues leading to treatment interruptions, ensuring sustained supply and availability of ART, private sector engagement, and integration with other health programs.

Future Directions and Ambitious Targets:

  • India’s National AIDS Control Program Phase 5 aims to further reduce new HIV infections and AIDS-related mortalities by 2025.
  • Ambitious targets include ensuring 95% of PLHIV know their status, receive sustained ART, and achieve viral suppression by 2025.
  • Challenges such as addressing delayed enrollment, improving adherence, sustaining ART supply, private sector engagement, staff training, and integration with other health programs need to be tackled to achieve these goals.

Success Factors and Lessons Learned:

  • Political will, sustained funding, community engagement, and modifications in service delivery were crucial to the success of the free ART initiative.
  • The initiative serves as a model for delivering quality healthcare services to all, guiding other public health programs in India.
  • Lessons from the ART initiative can inform the launch of nationwide initiatives, such as free hepatitis C treatment, and accelerate progress towards disease elimination.

Nut Graf: India’s response to HIV/AIDS marked by the launch of Free Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) in 2004, proved pivotal. Over two decades, the initiative expanded access, reduced prevalence, and set ambitious targets, offering lessons for future public health endeavours.

Context: Elon Musk’s Neuralink implant, designed for intuitive device control via brain signals, has brought attention to the practical applications of neuroscience.

  • By mapping brain responses, businesses gain insights into consumer behavior, aiding decisions from product design to advertising strategies.
  • Techniques like the Implicit Association Test delve into subconscious beliefs, offering valuable data unattainable through traditional surveys.
  • Despite ethical concerns about privacy and consent, neuroscience-based research is increasingly shaping business strategies.
  • In India, companies leverage affordable bio instruments and digital tools for insights into consumer behavior.
