A good speech in school will earn you the admiration of your teachers and peers alike. You probably won't deliver the kind of speech you hear in the movies, but that's a good thing: people will enjoy your original take much more. From getting an idea to conquering stage fright, here are the steps to take if you want to make your final speech a memorable, exciting success.

Writing the Speech

• If you're not sure which theme to choose, write down or summarize a few stories and statements you could include in your speech. Pick the ones you like best and see if there's a unifying theme to tie them together.
• See What to Do and What Not to Do for more advice on themes.

• Don't interrupt one point with a clause, or section set aside by commas or parentheses. Instead of saying "Our tennis and basketball teams, which we all know won the regional championships two years ago, need increased funding to compete," say "Our tennis and basketball teams both won the regional championships two years ago. Now we need to increase their funding to compete with other schools."
• You can reference your school's slang once or twice to get a laugh, but don't overdo it, especially if there are parents in the audience.

• Find a broad message that your whole audience can connect to their own life, but still deals with a specific idea. For instance: "Become an even better version of the hero who inspired you." (But don't steal your "original" idea from this website!)
• Your stories can be specific incidents in your life or from history, but you should connect them to a more general idea. For instance, you could tell a story about your sibling's hospital visit, then go on to talk about overcoming fear and hardship in general.
• If you like what you're writing but it doesn't fit the theme you had planned, it's fine to adjust your topic or switch it entirely. Switch back and forth between writing stories and brainstorming a theme if you keep getting stuck.

• Surprise your audience by diving right into a tough story. "When I was ten years old, I lost my father."
• Make your audience laugh by telling a joke, especially one that everyone in the room will get. "Hello everyone. Let's have a round of applause for the guy who installed air conditioning."
• Start with a grand, thought-provoking statement. "Our galaxy contains billions of earth-like planets, and we're only just beginning to discover them."
• Most likely, someone else will introduce you, and many of your classmates know you already. Unless you're asked specifically to introduce yourself, you can get right to the good stuff.

• To use an example from earlier, if your theme is "Become an even better version of the hero who inspired you," you could begin your speech with two or three sentence about your hero, then say "You all have heroes who inspire you, but you don't have to just follow them. You can become even greater than the people you look up to."

• Include phrases such as "Now I'd like to talk about..." and "But we should also remember..." when moving on to your next idea.

• Build up to a big ending, then crack a joke to wrap up a funny speech. "And I know when you walk to the ballot box tomorrow, you'll be ready to do the right thing. Protect the interests of yourself and your school by washing your hands afterward. Do you know how many people touch that thing?"
• If you're giving a commencement speech, leave people feeling excited or awed about the future. This is a big moment and you have the power to help them realize it. "Years from now, you will be the father or mother your kid looks up to. The writer who changes the way we think. The inventor who creates new ways to live. Come up to the stage and start becoming heroes!"

• Have a teacher, family member, or trusted friend check it over for grammar mistakes and offer feedback. Spelling isn't as important, since you'll be speaking out loud.

• If your topic involves a lot of numbers, plan to write them on the board so your audience can remember them

• Your notes are there to remind you what to say next and of important facts. "Move on to bear wrestling story (guy's name is Paul Bunyan)" is the level of detail you need.

Practicing and Delivering the Speech

• Practice giving your speech in as situation as similar to your actual speech as possible.
• In general, you should stay fairly still while giving a speech. Small hand gestures and occasionally moving to a new spot are fine, especially if they help you feel and appear confident

• If you speech is too long, you absolutely need to cut some material out of it or shorten the longer stories or ideas. If you're giving a commencement speech, aim for a 10 or 15 minute maximum. An election speech should be no more than a few minutes, and your teacher should be able to tell you the time limit for a class assignment speech.

• If you can't stop rushing, work out how long you should spend on each section and write the number of minutes at the top of each index card or paragraph. Practice near a clock so you can check whether you're on pace.

• Use slightly different words each time once you have the main ideas down. Try not to get caught up on exact memorization; using a new phrase to communicate the written idea makes your speech sound more natural.

• Practice varying your facial expression if your face looks fixed and mechanical.
• Try to vary the tone of your voice as well. Don't make it sound like you're reciting every word from memory; pretend you're speaking in ordinary conversation.

• Try to make eye contact with different members of your audience throughout the speech. Don't stare at any one person for too long.
• Resist the temptation to hide by standing near a corner or large object.
• Don't fidget, tap your foot, or make other nervous gestures. Try slowly walking back and forth across the stage to get rid of your nervous energy.

• Dressing nicely will increase your confidence and gain respect and attention from your audience.

What to Do and What Not to Do

• Memories your class shares and personal memories that many people will connect to, such as your first day at the school.
• Overcoming obstacles. Talk about how your classmates overcame problems related to academics, finances, and health, and how proud everyone is that they're standing here.
• The diversity of your classmates and celebrating the rich variety of experiences, personalities, and interests at your school. Describe some of the many ways people will go on to do good in the world.

• Address your audience directly. Ask them questions to get them thinking, although you shouldn't expect an answer.
• Use groups of three. The human brain loves repetition, and especially trios. Start three sentences with the same phrase, speaking louder each sentence.
• Use emotive language. Try to provoke a strong emotional response in your audience, not present a list of facts to them.

• Don't tell stories that only a few friends will understand. Even references that your whole class will get should be used sparingly if there are parents in the room as well.

• Go change the world!
• Today is not the last day of your education, but the first.
• The future belongs to you.
• If elected, I will be the voice of the students.
• It's time for change!

• If you're giving a high school commencement speech, remember that not everyone in your class will be attending college. Don't joke about your education letting you avoid a "bad" profession; chances are good there's a parent who has that job out in the audience.=

Public speaking tips for students aim to reduce anxiety that can interfere with giving presentations or speeches in class. These tips can also be helpful for those with social anxiety disorder (SAD)   who have difficulty speaking in front of a group or telling a story among friends.

Public Speaking Tips

If you have SAD and need to give a speech  in elementary school, high school, college, or university, it helps to be as prepared as possible . Beyond preparation, however, there are strategies that you can use to reduce anxiety and fight the urge to stay home with a fake illness.

Even great speakers practice their speeches beforehand. Practice out loud with a recording device or video camera and then watch yourself to see how you can improve. If you are feeling brave, practice in front of a friend or family member and ask for feedback.

• Talk about what you know : If possible, choose a topic for your speech or presentation that you know a lot about and love. Your passion for the topic will be felt by the audience, and you will feel less anxious knowing that you have a lot of experience to draw from when other students ask you questions.
• Concentrate on your message : When you focus on the task at hand, anxiety is less likely to get out of control. Concentrate on the main message of your speech or presentation and make it your goal to deliver that message to the other students in your class.
• Grab the audience's attention : Most of your fellow classmates will pay attention for at least the first 20 seconds; grab their attention during those early moments. Start with an interesting fact or a story that relates to your topic.
• Have one main message : Focus on one central theme and your classmates will learn more. Tie different parts of your talk to the main theme to support your overall message. Trying to cover too much ground can leave other students feeling overwhelmed.

Tell Stories

Stories catch the attention of other students and deliver a message in a more meaningful way than facts and figures. Whenever possible, use a story to illustrate a point in your talk.

Being prepared to speak in public can also be important if you have social anxiety disorder. Feeling confident and prepared to give your speech may help lessen your feelings of anxiety. Some of the things that you can do to prepare include:

• Visit the room : If you have access to the classroom where you will be speaking outside of class hours, take the time to visit in advance and get used to standing at the front of the room. Make arrangements for any audio-visual equipment and practice standing in the exact spot where you will deliver your speech.
• Rack up experience : Volunteer to speak in front of your class as often as possible. Be the first one to raise your hand when a question is asked. Your confidence will grow with every public speaking experience.
• Observe other speakers : Take the time to watch other speakers who are good at what they do. Practice imitating their style and confidence.
• Organize your talk : Every speech should have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Structure your talk so that the other students know what to expect.

Manage Your Anxiety

Taking steps to deal with your feelings of anxiety can also make public speaking easier. Some of the things that you can do:

• Tell someone about your anxiety : If you are speaking in front of a high school or college class, meet with your teacher or professor and describe your public speaking fears . If you're in elementary or high school, share your fears with your parents, a teacher, or a guidance counselor. Sometimes sharing how you feel can make it easier to overcome stage fright.
• Visualize confidence : Visualize yourself confidently delivering your speech. Imagine feeling free of anxiety and engaging the students in your class. Although this may seem like a stretch for you now, visualization is a powerful tool for changing the way that you feel. Elite athletes use this strategy to improve performance in competitions.
• Find a friendly face : If you are feeling anxious, find one of your friends in class (or someone who seems friendly) and imagine that you are speaking only to that person.

Maintain Perspective

Remember that other students are on your side. Think about a time when you have been an audience member and the student delivering the speech or presentation was noticeably nervous. Did you think less of that student? More likely, you felt sympathetic and wanted to make that person more comfortable by smiling or nodding.

Remember—other students generally want you to succeed and feel comfortable. If for some reason the audience is not on your side or you experience bullying or social exclusion, be sure to discuss this with a parent, teacher, or guidance counselor.

Be Confident

Sometimes just knowing what makes a good speech can help you feel more confident. Focus on some of the following elements and practice them before you have to speak in public.

• Develop your own style : In addition to imitating good speakers, work on developing your own personal style as a public speaker. Integrate your own personality into your speaking style and you will feel more comfortable in front of the class. Telling personal stories that tie into your theme are a great way to let other students get to know you better.
• Avoid filler words : Words such as "basically", "well", and "um" don't add anything to your speech. Practice being silent when you feel the urge to use one of these words.
• Vary your tone, volume, and speed : Interesting speakers vary the pitch (high versus low), volume (loud versus soft), and speed (fast versus slow) of their words. Doing so keeps your classmates interested and engaged in what you say.
• Make the audience laugh : Laughter is a great way to relax both you and the other students in your class, and telling jokes can be a great icebreaker at the beginning of a speech. Practice the timing and delivery of your jokes beforehand and ask a friend for feedback. Be sure that they are appropriate for your class before you begin.
• Smile : If all else fails, smile. Your fellow classmates will perceive you like a warm speaker and be more receptive to what you have to say.

Don't Apologize

If you make a mistake, don't offer apologies. Chances are that your classmates didn't notice anyway. Unless you need to correct a fact or figure, there is no point dwelling on errors that probably only you noticed.

If you make a mistake because your hands or shaking, or something similar, try to make light of the situation by saying something like, "I wasn't this nervous when I woke up this morning!" This can help to break the tension of the moment.

It's natural to feel frightened the first time you have to speak in front of your class. However, if you fear continues, interferes with your daily life and keeps you awake at night, it may be helpful to see someone about your anxiety.

Why is speech encouraged in Primary school?

It is a common practice to give the students a little idea about giving speeches as early as primary school. Part of the reason is that these are the foundational years and form as a stepping stone for the students to get a little more used to public speaking as they move to higher classes .

A couple of ways students in primary schools may be asked to give speeches would be to introduce themselves or at competitions like fancy dress competitions.

In high school, as students gain more understanding about the world at large and develop their opinions, giving speeches is encouraged in school to help them navigate their thoughts to their peers. Further, speeches as a form of public speaking also help build the student’s soft skills .

Speeches aren’t about blurting out your ideas or opinions, rather it requires you to research and find evidence to back your point of view, or to think critically to deliver a speech that effectively reaches the other students.

Speeches could be framed around a popular or controversial issue that the student wishes to provide their insight into. This would encourage them to come up with solutions. Graduation Speech

Students may also be expected to present a graduation speech . However, the big difference here is that not everyone gets the opportunity to present a graduation speech or commencement address as it is known.

Write how you speak, not how you write.

When I came across this tip, I was surprised too. Because is indeed true that we write very differently when we have to show the speech to someone in written form but if asked honestly, do we speak in such a highly polished, extra professional vocabulary?

The idea is not to write the speech or speech opening riddled with slang but rather in a way that you’d feel comfortable listening to and understanding easily had you been the listener.

So in short, prepare the speech with the listener in mind, not the reader .

What is a good opening line for a speech?

Most opening lines for speech in school begin with a good morning.  We usually follow it with greetings or addressing the audience and the guests.

Here is a list of ways you can begin with a simple good morning:

• Good morning everyone presents here today. I’m delighted to present my views and understanding on a very delicate yet overlooked topic; Gender sensitization in the workplace.
• Good afternoon esteemed members of the jury, my friends and peers, and everyone present in the room today.
• Good morning to the faculty, the non-teaching staff, and the class of 2022!!

Now it is a good practice to begin your speech with your usual greetings. However, in this blog, we are trying to look beyond the usual.

It doesn’t mean that you will not be saying good morning or your basic greetings; the only difference is that you’ll not be opening your speech with it but addressing these basic formalities later in the speech.

Lon Watters had said that “A school is a building with four walls, with tomorrow inside.” And it would be wrong if I said that I didn’t agree with every bit of what he said. As we come to an end of our journey with this school that has provided us with tons of opportunities to learn, grow, interact and make memories we sure will cherish forever…

“If you don’t have a plan for your life, somebody else does.” This is a quote given by Michael Hyatt and isn’t it something we have all been experiencing all these years of growing up as our parents or guardians make plans for us right from the way we dress to the school we go to and sometimes even the careers we choose.  2. “Imagine” Scenario

This happens to be a personal favorite of mine when it comes to speech openings for students. A very simple yet beautiful way to engage your audience right at the beginning of your speech while at the same time allowing them to relate to what you’ll be saying next is what the image” scenarios are all about.

Before we begin, I’d like you to take a moment and imagine walking through a trail. You see the lush greens and pretty sky above you, the most dynamic clouds following everyone you go. Try sniffing the smell of wet soil and a hint of flowery fragrance as you walk towards the edge of the hill expecting to take a glimpse of the utter beauty that these hours of walking would lead you to, but you find something else. You see something that sends chills down your spine. There are some strange men performing rituals right in the very heart of these dense greens. You wonder what it is all about until it hits you; you have just uncovered a cult.

For the next example, I’d like you to take a look at the video below and check for yourself how wonderfully the speaker (although not a student) has made use of the “imagine” scenario to share his tragic experience with his audience.

Imagine a big explosion as you climb through 3,000 ft. Imagine a plane full of smoke. Imagine an engine going clack, clack, clack, clack, clack, clack, clack. It sounds scary. Well I had a unique seat that day. I was sitting in 1D.

3. “What If” Scenario

What if I told you that the best speech openings for students are actually the ones wherein they come up with an opening that best represents their style and comfort at delivering speeches, be it with a joke or a story?

Do you see what I did there?

That is an example of a “what if” scenario. It is similar to the imagination scenario we discussed above but the only difference here is that “what if” speech openings for students focus on providing an alternative idea to the audience while the imagined scenarios provide the audience an opportunity to relate to the speaker.

4. Rhetorical question

Rhetorical questions are questions the speaker includes in his/her/their speech that doesn’t necessarily require the audience to come up with an answer but are posed to get the audience thinking on the same.

Using rhetorical questions as speech openings for students can work wonders especially when you are looking for either a very quick speech opening or have very little time to deliver the speech.

An example of using rhetorical questions for speech opening is given below:

Talking about the new policy that makes it illegal to check the gender of the child before birth, do you think that it will curb the issue of female foeticide? Or will it simply take the activity underground?

The art of silence is phenomenal. Opening your speech in silence can help enhance your speech in two ways.

First, it will give the audience some time to settle in , post which you can expect to grab their dedicated attention. And secondly, silence would give you some time to understand the room and calm your pre-stage anxiousness .

6. Statistics and figures

Show the numbers, the figures, and any statistics that serve your purpose for giving the speech.

It is very common to overlook the seriousness of any situation when you aren’t aware of the real extent of its seriousness. But when we have numbers in front of us, there is no more room for being in denial.

• According to the 2019 WWF report , on average, we consume about 1,769 microplastic particles every week. 1769 microplastic particles every single week, can you imagine that?
• 3.2 million teenagers between the age of 12-17 were depressed in the US as of 2017. Now you can only assume the number has increased over the past 5 years.

7. Powerful  Statements

Powerful statements are statements that try to break any common ideologies held by the public. Another example of a powerful statement is stating a fact or idea that isn’t openly spoken .

How often have we been told to include stories in our speech?

Almost every time isn’t it? So here we are to bombard you yet again by saying that stories are extremely fun and engaging forms of speech openings for students.

You can either share your experience or someone else’s story.

You can also refer to a Recent Conversation by starting your speech with something like “Just the other day as I was walking out of my Philosophy lecture, I asked Mr.Dee about his philosophy on life, and what he said was so eye-opening that I could not wait to share with all of you.”

How to start a speech for the student council.

Speeches for student council are usually persuasive. They are your pitch to convince your fellow students to vote for you and help you get the position you are looking for.

So ideally, you should start by addressing everyone in the room . Then make a point to introduce yourself. Once you have introduced yourself, remind the audience why you are speaking which means let them know the position you are campaigning for. Bring up at least 1-2 issues that the students are most concerned about and tell them how if elected you’ll provide solutions to their issues.

School days are one of everyone's favorite memories. It is known to be the best phase of one's life. My school days were a learning experience for me. where I started learning the alphabets and can now solve real-world problems. What I learned in school will always be with me. It was an unforgettable journey that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

I studied at a school that taught me etiquette, time management, and discipline. It has the capacity to produce toppers. The best quality of my school is that, apart from academics, it also focuses on sports.

My school holds a variety of science quizzes and sports competitions to help students improve their grades. My school is a home where my teachers are like parents and my friends are like family who care for each other. My school has taught me self-discipline. Schools have a great culture and environment.

We do know that the first and last days of our school were memorable days. We arrive at school with an empty bag, and we leave with a bag full of memories, learnings, and emotions.

School teaches us what is right and wrong, good and bad, the importance of discipline, and the importance of time. Teachers encourage students to grow intellectually. Teachers play an extraordinary role in transmitting their knowledge to students.

School is a place where we socialize, grow, learn, and establish ourselves . Teachers guide us when we are in need. Teachers are known as the foundation of any educational institution.

Before entering the real world, students learn how to think at school. Students are exposed to new ideas, and they are encouraged to develop their critical thinking. Consuming knowledge in new subjects can improve children's skills and help them grow exponentially.

We also learn about teamwork through different activities. They offer a variety of activities to help teams function better. They aid in the preparation, guidance, and training of the bright mind for the future. The best schools always produce the best students.

There is a famous saying that "one book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the whole world."

My School Experience

My high school helped me grow as a person inside and outside of the classroom by making me more confident and independent. My school has taught me the importance of independence. My high school days are fully filled with fun and excitement .

In high school, one becomes mature enough to understand the values. In that phase, I learned to direct myself. I learned about hard work and dedication toward my goal. My friends used to guide me when I was in need. I have some good pictures of them. The pictures from my school days are the best memories. I remember the days when we used to participate in extracurricular activities.

I have good memories of middle school. It was not just into academics and sports but also included music, dance, and some indoor games. My school had a library where different types of books were placed. It also used to have a robotics lab and a computer lab where highly trained staff helped us learn new skills. Our teachers not only taught the lessons but also helped us attend various competitions. I even represented my school in a quiz competition and won a prize for the school.

The biggest reason behind the success of my school is our principal. He is very active and disciplined, and his knowledge is commendable. The experiences we get in school life help us grow as humans. Everyone should remember that not everyone is fortunate enough to receive an education, so if the opportunity arises, one should seize it.

In case your speech fails to do so, your audience will be stricken with boredom and would not bother giving your ideas and opinions the chance to be heard. Furthermore, once you are through with presenting your ideas, write a conclusion that persuades your audience to consider your perspective. This can be attained by writing a conclusion that declares an idea that makes them think rather than declare how your ideas are right and must be implemented. My School Speech for School Students

Short speech on my school.

Every school is special in its own way and the same is with my school as well. It is a place where people from different backgrounds and temperaments come together with the purpose to learn. It offers magic in the form of experiments in laboratories, sports in the field, creativity in the art room and more. Schools are a place where we get to make friends, learn new things and grow every day. In fact, it is so hard to imagine a world without schools. They are the first place where we learn about life and many other things. Similarly, my school plays the same role in my life.

My School’s Uniqueness

I study in a convent school which has centuries-old buildings. It has two buildings which divide into the senior category and junior category. The red walls of my school are the trademark of our uniqueness. They are renowned all over the city and have been so for many years.

Every school carries some uniqueness in some way and so does my school. It is the only school in the whole city to cover the largest area. Moreover, my school produces the highest number of toppers in the board exams.

Other than that, the big playground of my school has the most modern swings which the kids absolutely love. In addition, the science lab of my school has all the gear and equipment one requires to successfully carry out experiments.

Another accomplishment of school is that it has got the largest library in the whole town. It consists of every book you can ever think of in many languages and genres. Most importantly, my school’s staff is very loving and inspirational. They love and care for us like their own children.

My Second Home

It would be only fit to call my school my second home. After all, it is the place where I spend most of my time after my home. Not only that, the atmosphere in my school is so comfortable that it makes me feel at home.

I have always loved attending school and never miss out on an opportunity to do so. Further, it is my second home also because I have my friends here who are nothing less than family to me. Thus, they make my school life easier and full of joy. It is truly a blessing to have them in my life.

Most importantly, my school is my second home because it teaches me a lot of things each day. It is a safe space that allows me to grow every day and reach greater heights. As you all know, we have our parents and older siblings at home who protect us at all times.

Similarly, at my second home which is my school, I have my teachers and seniors. They make sure I reach my full potential and encourage me to do the right thing always.

Therefore, I will forever be grateful to my school for being a pillar of strength in my life. Everything that I learn here stays in my mind and heart forever. One day I will have to bid farewell to these beautiful red walls and inspiring teachers, but it won’t change anything. It is so because my school is a part of who I am and it’ll always remain the same for my entire life.

Maryland middle school students face hate crime charges for Nazi salutes, swastikas

Three middle schoolers in Maryland were charged with hate crimes after they displayed swastikas, acted out Nazi salutes, and made "offensive comments" about a classmate's religious beliefs, county prosecutors announced last week.

The students were charged as juveniles with harassment and violations of state hate crimes statutes, the Calvert County State’s Attorney’s Office said in a news release Friday. The behavior began last December and the students refused to stop despite "repeated requests," county prosecutors added.

According to charging documents, the students displayed swastikas, made Nazi salutes, and "directed offensive comments to a classmate because of the classmate’s religious beliefs" for several months. The victim ultimately reported the conduct to Maryland State Police officers, who investigated and filed the charges against the students, county prosecutors said.

The three middle schoolers were identified as 13-year-old students at Plum Point Middle School in Calvert County, about 50 miles southeast of Washington, D.C. Their names have not been publicly released because they are minors.

County prosecutors said the charges will be forwarded to the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services.

"Maryland was founded on the principle of religious toleration. It is frankly astonishing that nearly 400 years later some people continue to persecute others based upon their religion," Calvert County State’s Attorney Robert Harvey said in a statement. "I call upon parents, educators, and community and faith leaders to make sure that our children know that religious persecution has no place in our society."

Calvert County Public Schools told USA TODAY on Monday that the school district is working with the county sheriff's office and is committed to "providing students and staff with an environment that is safe, welcoming, and free from all forms of discrimination."

"All complaints are investigated promptly," the school district said in an email. "Upon completion of an investigation, students and school personnel may be subject to disciplinary action or consequences for discriminatory behaviors."

Latest hate crime charges against middle school students

The charges against the three 13-year-olds came about over a week after six middle school students in Massachusetts were charged in Snapchat bullying incidents , officials said.

On March 14, Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni announced that state authorities will be pursuing criminal charges against six minors from Southwick, Massachusetts, for "their alleged roles in facilitating and participating in a hateful, racist online chat that included heinous language, threats, and a mock slave auction."

The six students were each charged with threatening to commit a crime, according to Gulluni. Of the six, two were also charged with interference with civil rights, and one of the two was charged with witness interference.

The students were accused of creating a Snapchat group chat in February, where several students shared derogatory remarks. "The investigation revealed that several students expressed hateful and racist comments, including notions of violence toward people of color, racial slurs, derogatory pictures and videos, and a mock slave auction directed at two particular juveniles," Gulluni said.

Increase of antisemitism across the U.S.

According to recent data, antisemitic incidents have surged across the United States in recent years. Each year, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) compiles a report on incidents of antisemitic harassment, vandalism, or assault in America.In 2022, the ADL tracked a 36% increase in antisemitic incidents from the previous year. The total stood at 3,697 — the highest number on record since the organization began tracking incidents in 1979.In the aftermath of the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks, advocacy organizations saw a rise in reports of hate crimes against both Jews and Muslims. According to the ADL's January report , there have been nearly 3,300 antisemitic incidents recorded between Oct. 7, 2023, and Jan. 7, 2024.

This represents a 361-percent increase compared to the same period one year prior, which saw 712 incidents," the ADL said in a January news release.

BTS' RM's 2018 United Nations speech included in Chile's school textbooks

B TS' RM has received another honorable mention in quite an expected way. His popular speech at the 2018 United Nations General Assembly has added to children's literature books in the form of study material. These books belong to Chile, and the books that mention this speech belong to the syllabus of 12–13-year-old children.

The speech had left an indelible impression on everyone in attendance as well as resonated far and wide across the entire world. Namjoon's message of self-love and self-acceptance resonated with a larger audience than expected. It became a historic moment then and there, and even after almost 7 years, it still continues to live on in the minds of fans, as well as some other written materials like the one mentioned above.

BTS' RM's United Nations speech gains prominence in children's study materials

In 2018, BTS made history by delivering a powerful speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. The septet became the first K-pop group to address the UN, marking a significant moment not only for them but also for the broader landscape of music and youth advocacy.

During their speech, BTS emphasized the importance of self-love, acceptance, and empowerment, drawing from their own personal experiences and the profound impact of their music on their global fanbase.

RM, or Kim Namjoon , the group's leader, delivered the speech on behalf of BTS, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to address the UN Assembly. He spoke eloquently about the group's journey, highlighting their message of love and unity transcending language and cultural barriers. A part of the speech read,

"Maybe I made a mistake yesterday, but yesterday's me is still me. I am who I am today, with all my faults. Tomorrow I might be a tiny bit wiser, and that's me, too. These faults and mistakes are what I am, making up the brightest stars in the constellation of my life. I have come to love myself for who I was, who I am, and who I hope to become."

This speech is now included in the textbooks of elementary school students in Chile. An X user, @saraprezgalind3, revealed a picture of the book's page on the platform. The textbooks also showcase a screenshot of RM giving the speech. Along with that, as a part of the written exercise, a question based on this was also asked.

"According to RM, what happened when he tried to adjust to everyone's moulds? How is this related to the idea of "losing one's name?""

This question was considered highly intellectual by the ARMYs , and they praised the efforts of the Chilean education system in influencing their students in this manner. Fans even joked about this particular write-up being written by someone who themselves is an ARMY.

Along with this question, a description of the BTS leader was included as well.

"Kim Namjoon, also known as RM, the leader of the K-pop group BTS, gave a speech at the United Nations General Assembly a while ago, where he called on everyone to find their voice and speak up for themselves."

RM emphasized the power of music as a universal language that can inspire hope and foster understanding among diverse communities. He discussed the hardships and insecurities faced by young people around the world and encouraged listeners to embrace their individuality and strive for positive change.

BTS' advocacy for youth empowerment and mental health awareness has since become a cornerstone of their philanthropic efforts, with the group consistently using their platform to address important social issues and support various charitable causes. All of the members have since donated to various humanitarian causes.

RM is currently enlisted in the military. He was reportedly promoted to Private First Class earlier this month after graduating from basic training as an Elite soldier. He'll be discharged in June 2025 with Jimin, Jungkook, and Taehyung.

Walz calls for new gun safety measures in State of the State speech at Owatonna High School

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Gov. Tim Walz used the backdrop of a gleaming new high school Tuesday night to call on the Legislature in his State of the State speech to enact new gun control measures to make schools and communities safer, while touting the achievements of last year’s legislative session.

Walz went to Owatonna High School to hold up how the southern Minnesota community has made big investments in education and workforce development and to use it as an example for how the rest of the state can make progress. The local business community and voters teamed up a few years ago to raise the money after decades of talk about replacing a century-old building.

“That small window of opportunity — that brief moment when the stars aligned — produced a community institution that you’re in today that will stand for decades and will impact tens of thousands of children,” Walz said.

Walz called for prompt action to strengthen requirements for safe storage of firearms, require better reporting of lost and stolen guns, and raise penalties for “straw buyers” who purchase firearms for people who can’t legally have them because of their criminal records.

Walz referred to the killings of three first responders in Burnsville last month by a convicted felon who allegedly obtained his guns by having his girlfriend buy them. Such purchases are a felony with tough penalties under federal law, but just a gross misdemeanor under state law, punishable by no more than a year in jail. Lawmakers who want to change that say local prosecutors are reluctant to file such cases because of the low penalties.

“We know that we can’t legislate against every act of violence but surely we can do more,” Walz said.

Saying high schoolers should be worried about pop quizzes and prom dates, not mass shootings, Walz noted that he signed legislation last year for a “red flag” law to allow courts to temporarily take guns away from people in crisis, and to strengthen background checks for gun purchases.

Walz used the example of the Owatonna community coming together to build the new high school to segue into a lengthy discussion of measures that he and the Democratic-controlled Legislature were able to enact last year after years of divided government. He cited raises in state aid to schools, higher teacher pay, more mental health resources for schools, and expanded special education and career and technical education.

And he noted that the 2023 Legislature passed new protections for abortion rights. On that theme, Walz pledged to protect the rights of families to use in-vitro fertilization, citing a court ruling against IVF in Alabama that has turned into a potent political issue nationwide. Walz said it’s personal for him. He and his wife, Gwen, had to turn to it to conceive their first child.

“When Gwen and I were having trouble getting pregnant, the anxiety, the frustration, would have blotted out the sun,” he said. “All we wanted was something that seemed so simple — to have that child. What those judges did was a direct attack on our family. It was a direct attack on my children. Gwen and I will not forget it. Nor will we forgive it. And neither will thousands across this state. ”

This was Walz’s sixth State of the State speech since taking office in 2019. Governors traditionally deliver them at the Capitol. But he gave his 2020 address by himself via livestream from his official residence during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. He faced another online audience in 2021 when he spoke from Mankato West High School, where he was once a geography teacher and football coach.

The main task this legislative session is a public infrastructure borrowing package known as a bonding bill, which will require at least some bipartisan cooperation to achieve the necessary 60% supermajorities needed to pass it. Walz touted the package he proposed in January, a combination of $982 million that focuses on maintaining existing infrastructure, like roads, bridges and water treatment facilities, along with more affordable housing and starting the process for building a new headquarters for the State Patrol.

“There’s no reason that both parties can’t be part of getting this done. I know we’re not going to agree on everything. Safe streets, we can agree on. Clean water, we can agree on. Affordable housing, we can agree on. So I’m asking you to join me, and not just at the ribbon cutting — but in the work to get it done in the first place.”

Supreme Court appears receptive to NRA free-speech lawsuit against a former New York state official

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court justices appeared receptive Monday to National Rifle Association claims that a former New York state official violated its free-speech rights by pressuring banks and insurance companies to blacklist the group after the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida .

The NRA is suing former New York State Department of Financial Services superintendent Maria Vullo, who the group says used her regulatory power to economically punish the group for its gun-rights stance in violation of the First Amendment.

The Biden administration has backed some of the NRA’s claims and encouraged the high court to reverse a lower court decision to toss out the suit. The NRA is being represented by a group often on the other end of the political spectrum: The American Civil Liberties Union.

“This is a First Amendment case. All they need to do is to show that the desire to suppress speech was a motivating factor,” said Justice Samuel Alito. Other justices in the court’s majority conservative wing also appeared receptive to the NRA’s suit.

Vullo, for her part, said she rightly investigated NRA-endorsed insurance policies sometimes referred to as “murder insurance,” her attorney Neal Katyal said. She did speak out about the risks of doing business with gun groups, but didn’t exert any improper pressure on companies, he said.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson questioned whether lawsuits like the NRA’s could hobble regulators when interest groups are involved: “How do we avoid a world in which advocacy organizations are exempt from regulation?”

The justices also heard another case Monday about the government and free speech. They appeared to favor the Biden administration in that dispute with Republican-led states on how far the federal government can go to combat controversial social media posts on topics including COVID-19 and election security.

The two cases are different because the NRA claimed it faced a “specific, coercive threat,” said Ephraim McDowell, assistant to the solicitor general, said in response to a question from Chief Justice John Roberts.

The NRA says Vullo leveraged a state investigation into the legality of NRA-endorsed insurance products to pressure insurance companies, saying she would go easier on them if they cut ties with the NRA.

The group had been working with insurance companies to offer its members policies that covered losses caused by firearms, even when the insured person intentionally killed or hurt somebody.

Vullo says the products clearly violated state law, including by covering intentional acts and criminal defense costs, and the pressure claims are “implausible and insufficient.” The probe started before Parkland and the insurance providers ultimately paid multimillion-dollar fines.

She also sent out guidance letters to banks and insurance companies warning about the “reputational risks” of working with the NRA. The NRA says her words had significant sway because of her position and several companies cut ties with the group, costing it millions in revenue.

Vullo says the letters were evenhanded and sent at a time when companies all over the country decided on their own to distance themselves from the NRA after the 2018 school shooting in Parkland that left 17 people dead.

“If you let this complaint go forward, you will be saying to government regulators everywhere that you have to be careful about the speech you say,” her attorney Katyal said, addressing the justices. “It’s not just the NRA today, it’s every regulated party tomorrow, from TikTok on.”

A federal appeals court in New York sided with her , finding she was doing her job and had qualified immunity as a government official. The NRA appealed that ruling to the Supreme Court.

That’s when the Justice Department weighed in. The solicitor general said the NRA’s claims about leveraging the investigation were plausible enough that the suit shouldn’t have been tossed out by a lower court, but also cautioned against an overly broad ruling that could wrongly restrict officials’ free speech.

The ACLU, for its part, has said it opposes the NRA’s views in general but that the case could be a “playbook” for government officials to target other groups, including those on the other end of the ideological spectrum supporting abortion rights or environmental protections.

“Government officials are free to encourage people not to support political groups they oppose. What they can not do is use their regulatory might to add ‘or else’ to that request,” said ACLU Attorney David Cole.

The Supreme Court is expected to hand down a decision by late June.

It’s not the first time Walz has gone on the road, but it has been a few years. 

The House chamber in the state Capitol is the traditional setting and where Walz has given three of his five annual addresses, including last year .

He spoke without an audience from the Governor’s Residence during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and was also by himself in 2021 when he spoke from a classroom at Mankato West High School, where he was a teacher prior to entering politics.

This time, he'll have an audience in the auditorium at the relatively new Owatonna High School .

Walz told MPR’s Politics Friday he plans to bring up hot-button issues like reproductive freedom and gun control. But he said the emphasis will be on the model Owatonna has set for education and workforce development. 

Walz is also likely to touch on the modest changes he has proposed to the state budget enacted last year.

He wants most of the projected $3.7 billion surplus untouched to avoid causing more pressure on future finances. But on Friday, Walz acceded to top DFL lawmakers and agreed to a bigger overall spending plan, about $541 million over the next three years. That’s more than double the $226 million Walz had proposed just days earlier.

“As the investments we made begin to take hold, these supplemental budget targets will protect that work, meet Minnesotans’ urgent needs and shape what comes next in our work to support Minnesota’s families, workers, consumers, and communities,” Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy, DFL-St. Paul, said of the blueprint.

Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson, R-East Grand Forks, said he wasn’t invited to this stage of negotiations and questioned the priorities emerging so far.

Most notably, Johnson said the proposed allocation of $16 million to shore up emergency medical services across the state isn’t enough to close gaps. He said it needs to be six times that amount or more.

“When you pick up the telephone because you have a heart attack or there is something going on at home, you expect an ambulance to be there. That’s a basic government service,” Johnson said. “We expect the budget to reflect what the people of Minnesota prioritize. That’s one of the things that’s bread and butter.”

Some lawmakers will make the trek to Owatonna for the event.

House Speaker Melissa Hortman, DFL-Brooklyn Park, guesses she’ll hear about last year’s “momentous budget year” and how all the legislation signed into law last year is being implemented.

“He’s looking forward to signing a capital investment bill if it makes it to his desk,” Hortman said. “I would expect he would focus on that.”

The location could give Walz room to nod to an area of bipartisan work. He intends to highlight technical training at Owatonna schools. 

Republicans and Democratic lawmakers often talk about vocational trades and ramping up education for positions in the workforce where there are shortages now. 

Last week, the governor was at Hennepin Technical College where he and other officials promoted $20 million in awards meant to encourage career training in high-demand fields. He said some schools recognize the need to boost certain areas; they’re offering programs to accelerate certificates for nursing assistance, for instance.

“You walk in there and you will see high-tech manufacturing,” Walz told a roundtable of grant recipients about the Owatonna school. “Our high school students are not only walking across stage at graduation, they’re walking across that stage with a CNA, and a placement already in a high-paying job.”

Walz said Owatonna is doing things right and he wants to highlight that.

“My message is going to be, look, our future lies in our ability to invest in our children: healthy starts, food, child tax credit, investments in education and workforce development,” Walz told MPR News on Friday. “You’re going to see a pretty bipartisan, positive message.”
