Not a penny more for this charity

I have given a lot of money to Cancer Research over the years, both direct donations, via fundraising and donations to the shops. I took a lot of valuable items to the Bromley store last week including a couple of iPads only to be told by an indignant assistant 'we are NOT taking donations at the moment'. I'd walked a long way with three large and heavy bags so was not best pleased! I get plenty of begging letters from them for fund raising so they could have sent an email to say the shop was not accepting donations or put something on the website. So it's Cancer Research's loss. They have become just another large, arrogant organisation. ***UPDATE*** I was promised a call by one of the 'sales' staff at C/R, but nobody bothered. By the way, the CEO of Cancer Research is paid OVER A QUARTER OF A MILLION. How many people might have lived if that money had been spent on cancer patients, instead of a Fat Cat CEO

I worked at the Falmouth store

I worked at the Falmouth store. I took time off sick due to anxiety and depression due to the nasty manager, the hours I covered for her whilst her bus was so called late or she was ill or just never turned up. She's nasty to the volunteers and nasty to me the way she speaks to people is absolutely shocking, if you knew how this shop was run you wouldn't go there. There all about money don't care about family life and headoffice is the same . Avoid working for this company

Worst Charity shop I ever been the saddest part it’s in heart of High Barnet what its kind of shame because rest of the shops are here are friendly and very helpful compare to this , the staff in here ignorant and unprofessional also has a very ruth manager who runs the shop with kind of racist attitude , Be Careful!!!!! if you find an item without label there is big chance she can be accusing you with label removal!!!! I use to gave clothing, book's,toys to this shop but now I am regret it a very big time regard less👎

Hamza saves the day!

Like many others, I would have given a one star, if not for one member of their team who saved the day. My cousin died a couple of weeks back and for various reasons I was unable to go to the funeral. As a way of marking his passing, I made a donation to CR in his name. I was guaranteed that I would receive an Email acknowledging the donation that day, so I could send it to his wife. Despite that lie, I had to chase the Email up twice. Eventually I got through to Hamza, who agreed that it wasn't acceptable. I'm not sure it was Hamza's job to do so, but he personally compiled an Email and sent it to me within the hour. Over a week later I received the official Email, which of course would have been too late to send. And I think Hamza's wording was better than the official one, which just came across as a Begging letter. CR, unacceptable! Hamza, well done, thank you. I'm not sure I'll bother in future.

Overpriced Charity Shops

I have been to multiple Cancer Research UK charity shops and all of them have insane prices. They sell clothes for the same price you could get them new. Other than that, they stock decent quality items and have shops in good locations.

Expecting contractors to fund their projects

Recruited building services professionals to mange their shops, had works planned and instructed only to be told that they expect contractors to “fund” their projects on “good faith” and they will only have budget in April 2024 (2.5 months from now) to pay the contractors. Totally unreasonable and out of the blue, how such a big charity can operate with poor management is shocking.

Keeping my money

Order a surgical bra and paid £6.99 for next day delivery. Two days later no sign of the bra nor confirmation of despatch. Received an automated email response to my emailed enquiry, saying expect a reply in 5 days. Call up, unhelpful woman … need to talk to despatch department can’t say when she’d have a reply, never mind when I could expect to receive the item I’d paid for. Asked for my order to be cancelled and a full credit, to which she replied it takes 15 days to process a refund. 15 days!!!! That’s not due to bank rules and process. That’s Cancer Research policy. A clear case of Cancer Research wilfully holding onto my money. So, long story short, I’m out of pocket for 15 days. Disgrace and has left a very unpleasant taste in my mouth for what I had previously thought was a wonderful charity and one for whom I have raised funds for over the years. They should be ashamed.

Started volunteering at the store in AbbeyGate Street. I was made very welcome. Beverley the shop manager made me feel at ease and the volunteers there that day made me feel I was part of a team . Beverley did a great job at the induction and I look forward to my next shift . Anyone looking to volunteer for the charity pop in and ask for more information.

Changing shape of charity shops

People go into charity shops to get a bargain. If an item is, for instance, £2.80, why not make it £3 initially instead of asking customer to round up to £3, as directed by Head Office. Also asking people 'if they gift aid' is fine but 'do you pay tax' is not. That is an intrusive question, which I object to being asked. Staff should hand out a leaflet about gift aid for customer to read for themselves. Finally, most of the good quality donations don't reach the shop floor, but, go on eBay. I know Cancer Research has to rely on donations for their income but the shops are beginning to be run like businesses. Targets are expected to be reached.

Prices too high …

Visited the Amersham shop today and found the prices extremely high! People go into a charity shop not only to support the charity but to pick up a bargain. Some of the second hand goods were dearer than they would be new. Needless to say I didn’t see anyone buy anything. These high prices aren’t doing the charity any favours. Won’t be returning!!

Worthless charity

Cancer research UK does next to nothing in terms of cancer treatment. Most of the current treatments have not changed in 30 years. The fact remains that more people are dying of cancer than ever before. The CEO earns £240,000 plus per year, so if you like funding hefty salaries then please continue to donate. Having recently lost a family member to cancer, I realised that treatments available are virtually worthless. If you are young enough and fit enough to cope with chemotherapy, then you stand a fighting chance; but if you are old and weak then your chances of surviving cancer are almost zero. 12/4/24. Their latest advert slogan is a joke "Together we are beating cancer". No we are not beating cancer. Cancer now riddles our society. It was hardly heard of in the 60's.

Greed, money making no care for the people

Here goes , im sick and tired of you guys begging on tv its excessive. If you truely cared about people and cancer youd actually look into alternatives You'd look into cannabis Herbs like tumeric You'd look into other routes instead of solely basing it on kemo which is mainly money money money.. while also pumping out multiple side effects. You'd promote a better diet an alkaline diet All of which will help not only cancer coming in the first place but will help reduce if not remove all together!!! Start fighting the government more and You'd get respect far more from far more people.

Disappointed

I recently went to drop off some donations to the Bromsgrove branch, I called first to explain what I had got, I was asked what I was donating, after telling me they were very busy, I eventually got some help to bring the donations inside, and was told ‘we don’t want any more than that’! And was asked again, what was in the bags. I’ve never had this kind of issue before, I felt like taking it elsewhere where it might be a little more appreciated. CRUK has been an important charity for me in the past, I’m hoping that the member of staff was simply having a bad day.

A charity that’s willing to protect its partnership with a company that abuses terminal cancer patients on clinical drug trials

Human beings have a great capacity for wrongdoing. It’s an attribute that is unique in the world of life. We can and do make things worse, voluntarily, with full knowledge of what we are doing (as well as accidentally, and carelessly, and in a manner that is wilfully blind). – Jordan B. Peterson 2018 Having contacted the press department on several occasions both by phone and e-mail with regards to the deplorable way ScottishPower treated a terminal cancer patient on clinical drug trials; all they were willing to do was be silent. This charity doesn’t care about cancer patients or the way family/careers supporting those patients are treated.

I appreciate you work hard to help…

I appreciate you work hard to help cancer patients. If you read Karma Book for once, you should be able to understand that people who get this illness have very bad karma and therefore the illness is therefore to protect from the worse. If they have read the book they can actually cure their own cancer themselves. If child gets cancer, their parents should cure their karma first not by using medication but by becoming a human.

Close up of Michelle - King's Lynn Support Centre Lead

Support Centre Lead

I started with Big C in November 2021 and look after the day to day running of the Support Centre in King’s Lynn.

I had been volunteering at a local Hospice in Chichester and enjoyed being able to support patients and their families. When I knew I was moving to Norfolk, I started looking to see if there was anything similar and saw the position with Big C advertised and applied. It is a privilege to work for the charity.

Tonia King, Area Centre Manager

Charitable Operations Area Manager

I look after operations to ensure our support centres can operate effectively and efficiently. I manage and develop new projects and services and have a keen interest in health equalities and end of life care.

Before joining Big C, I volunteered as an NHS Cancer Awareness Champion, a cause close to my heart after losing my Dad suddenly following his cancer diagnosis 6 weeks previously. I am one of six and following our father’s death support was difficult to find so when I saw that Big C was opening a support Centre in my hometown I could see the real benefit to patients and families. When I got the call to offer me the job I burst into tears! I have felt privileged and proud to be part of the charity ever since.

Close up of Support Officer, Frances

Support and Information Officer

I work in the King’s Lynn Centre and provide emotional support to our service users either by phone or in person and look after their wellbeing. I facilitate the Ladies, Carers and Bereavement groups and ensure that our service users have a safe and confidential place, where they can share personal experiences and feelings with others in similar circumstances.

I used to volunteer with Age UK. I loved interacting with the people I met and realised how important it was for them to have someone who would take the time to listen and talk to them, and also provide emotional support. I wanted a role where I could continue to do this and working for Big C has offered me this opportunity.

Close up of Support & Information Officer Alison

Support & Information Officer

I support people affected by cancer in person and over the phone or online. I facilitate our Ladies Breast Support Group and assist with our Ladies and Carers support groups at King’s Lynn.

I work at the Bic C to help make a difference, by actively listening and empowering people affected by cancer with the information I provide.

Close up of Support Officer Ian

I support people affected by cancer in person & over the phone or online. I facilitate our Men’s Support Group & assist with our Kingsmen group at King’s Lynn.

I have worked in a wide range of social care and education roles for over 25 years.

King's Lynn hospital joins vital breast cancer research trial

Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital has become the first district general in Europe to enrol volunteers to a vital breast cancer research trial.

The study is examining whether the disease can be detected earlier if markers in the blood can be identified in women at a high risk of developing the condition.

Other studies have provided data on genes which are a strong indicator for developing breast cancer and often lead to surgery.

King's Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital

Scientists say people at high risk of developing breast cancer often undergo a double mastectomy, so detecting the disease at an earlier stage could be a major step forward to eliminate the need to have surgery.

The impact on women having this surgery can cause significant psychological issues.

Hayley Webb, Research Nurse at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, who is leading the study as Principal Investigator at the trust, said: “At the beginning, COVID overruled a lot of our lives and we had to adapt to what was the most important thing at the time, but by working as a team, we’ve managed really well.”

The QEH’s breast screening department and research teams worked collaboratively to invite every woman who was eligible to join the trial when attending their check-up.

The team have successfully recruited 12 volunteers to date in a risk free manner, by aligning appointments with mammograms in an effort to reduce the potential risks to participants.

The impact of Covid-19 meant many studies had to pause and many staff refocussed on the international priority of finding ways to treat patients with coronavirus.

However, in time, the trust’s Restart process launched and the team at QEH spotted an opportunity to get the study started.

Helen Macdonald, Chief Operating Officer for the National Institute for Health Research’s Clinical Research Network Eastern said: “It is excellent to see that, despite the challenging odds, Hayley and the team have ensured that essential research can continue and patients are given the opportunity to take part in it.

“Through the years, and recent months in particular, the strengthening of our unique research community at trust, regional and national level continues to gain momentum, putting us in the best shape to find new treatments to benefit as many people as we can.”

Our courses have been measured with a measuring wheel. This is the most accurate measurement method and may not always correspond with digital tracking apps and watches.

Have the right kit It’s a good idea to check the weather before your event and dress accordingly. Think breathable sports gear (leggings and shorts are ideal) and well-fitting trainers. For Pretty Muddy, wear something you don’t mind getting dirty. Check out the latest range of Race for Life clothing and accessories in our online shop .

Be sun smart Stay sun safe by finding shade when you’re not on the course and covering up with clothes, a hat and sunglasses. On parts you can’t cover, use sunscreen with at least SPF15 and a 4 or 5 star rating. Find out more about being sun smart.

Your back sign and race number Remember to bring your back sign and Race number which will be sent to you in the post – don’t forget safety pins so you can attach them to you.
