I was traveling from Manchester to London by car. It was a pleasant journey as the weather was fine. On the way, I saw a road accident. A car had collided with a coach. The coach was overturned and many passengers were lying on the road injured. Some of them were shouting for help. People had gathered there. The police had also arrived there. They were trying to help the injured passengers. An ambulance was coming. The accident had caused a big traffic jam. The vehicles were stranded on the road for a long time. There are many causes of road accidents. They are as follow;

1. Over-speeding : The most common cause of road accidents is over-speeding. Many drivers do not follow the speed limit and drive at a very high speed. This increases the chances of accidents as they cannot apply brakes on time in case of an emergency.

10 Effects Of Road Accidents | Devastating Consequences

The effects of road accidents are profound and far-reaching, spanning from immediate physical harm to lingering emotional scars. These tragedies not only affect the victims but also send ripples throughout communities, inflicting broader social and economic consequences. Beyond the evident distress and damage, road accidents impose a weighty burden on families, often leading to financial strain and relationship challenges.

In this blog, we will explore the 10 primary consequences of road accidents, from immediate and financial to emotional and psychological. We will also look at the long-term effects of accidents and the legal and social implications they can have. By understanding the full scope of the consequences of road accidents, we can take steps to prevent them and mitigate their impact when they occur. Let’s dive in and explore the ripple effect of road accidents.

10 Effects Of Road Accidents

Road accidents can have devastating effects on individuals, families, and communities. Some of the common effects of road accidents include:

1. Physical Injuries

Road accidents can result in a wide range of physical injuries, from minor cuts and bruises to severe injuries such as broken bones, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and amputations. These injuries can impact a person’s health and well-being, leading to long-term disabilities and reduced mobility.

Victims may require extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation, which can be costly and time-consuming. They may also experience chronic pain and discomfort, affecting their ability to work, socialize, and enjoy life as they once did. Physical injuries can also have a psychological impact, leading to anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions.

2. Emotional Trauma

The emotional trauma of a road accident can be just as devastating as physical injuries. Survivors may experience shock, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and struggle with guilt, anger, and fear. These emotional reactions can be long-lasting, affecting a person’s ability to function normally and enjoy life.

The emotional trauma of a road accident can also impact a person’s relationships and social interactions, leading to isolation and further mental health problems. Survivors need professional help to manage their emotional reactions and prevent long-term psychological damage.

10 Effects Of Road Accidents

3. Loss of Life

Road accidents can result in the tragic loss of life, leaving families and communities devastated. Losing a loved one in a road accident can profoundly impact family members, friends, and communities.

The emotional and psychological toll can be significant, and grieving can take a long time. For some, it may take years to come to terms with losing a loved one. Families and communities need to support each other during these difficult times and seek professional help if needed.

4. Financial Burden

Road accidents can also have a significant financial impact. Victims may face medical bills, property damage, and lost wages, which can add up quickly. In some cases, victims may also face legal fees and other expenses related to their accident.

The financial burden of a road accident can be overwhelming, particularly for those who cannot work due to their injuries. This can lead to financial instability, debt, and even bankruptcy.

5. Disability and Reduced Mobility

Severe injuries sustained in road accidents can result in disabilities and reduced mobility, affecting a person’s ability to work, socialize, and enjoy life as they once did. Disabilities can be temporary or permanent and require ongoing medical treatment and rehabilitation. This can be costly, time-consuming, and impact a person’s mental health and well-being.

6. Impact on Families and Relationships

Road accidents can strain families and relationships, with loved ones having to provide physical and emotional support to those affected. The stress and strain can sometimes lead to marital problems, divorce, or family breakdowns. Families need to seek support and counseling to manage the impact of a road accident on their relationships.

7. Impact on Mental Health

The emotional trauma of a road accident can also impact mental health, leading to anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. Survivors may struggle to cope with the psychological impact of their accident for years to come. Survivors need professional help to manage their emotional reactions and prevent long-term psychological damage.

8. Loss of Confidence

Road accidents can be traumatic, and survivors may struggle with various psychological effects, including losing confidence. After an accident, a person may feel hesitant or fearful about driving or leaving home. They may worry about being involved in another accident and feel vulnerable and unsafe on the road. These fears can be particularly challenging for those who rely on driving for work or daily activities, such as running errands or caring for family members.

Losing confidence following a road accident can also lead to social isolation and mental health problems. If a person feels too fearful or anxious to leave their home, they may become socially isolated, exacerbating loneliness, depression, and anxiety. They may also struggle with losing independence and a sense of helplessness, leading to hopelessness and despair.

Therefore, it is important for those who have experienced a road accident to seek support and guidance from mental health professionals or support groups to help them rebuild their confidence and regain control of their lives.

Effects Of Road Accidents

9. Reduced Quality of Life

Road accidents can profoundly impact a person’s quality of life. Survivors may experience physical injuries, emotional trauma, and financial stress that can limit their ability to perform daily tasks and participate in activities they once enjoyed. Seeking support and rehabilitation is crucial to improving their quality of life and regaining independence.

Through counseling, medical treatment, and support groups, survivors can manage pain, address emotional trauma, and rebuild confidence to resume normal activities. By doing so, survivors can improve their overall well-being and regain control over their lives.

10. Social and Economic Impact

Road accidents can also have a broader social and economic impact, affecting communities and entire countries. The cost of medical care lost productivity.

Property damage can be staggering, and the impact on families and individuals can lead to increased reliance on social services and support programs. Governments and communities need to invest in road safety initiatives and support programs for those affected by road accidents.

In conclusion, road accidents have devastating consequences that affect individuals, families, and communities. A road accident’s physical, emotional, and financial impact can be overwhelming and long-lasting, leading to disabilities, emotional trauma, and financial stress. However, by understanding the effects of road accidents, we can take steps to prevent them and support those affected.

Through better road safety measures, education, and awareness, we can reduce the number of road accidents and prevent the devastating consequences they bring. For those who have experienced a road accident, seeking support and rehabilitation services is essential to improve their quality of life and regain their independence.

In addition, governments and organizations need to provide resources and support programs to those affected by road accidents, including counseling, medical treatment, and financial assistance. By working together, we can make our roads safer and help those affected by road accidents rebuild their lives.

Causes and Solutions of Car Accidents Report

Introduction, types of car accidents, causes of car accidents, solutions to car accidents, works cited, source evaluation report.

Car accidents are unexpected events that occur to motor vehicles causing damage of the vehicles, structures, fatalities and even death of the people in the vehicles. According to a research done by the United Nations, the rate of growth of accidents in the world continue to increase with over two million deaths and thirty million injuries reported annually.

The studies revealed that over seventy percent of the deaths that resulted from road accidents occurred in developing countries. These imply that automobile accidents are a major problem in developing counties stretching from regions of pacific Asia to many parts of Sub Sahara Africa which contribute to over fifty percent of these accidents.

The numbers of vehicles continue increasing every year and governments are responding by constructing modern roads that can facilitate smooth transportation of goods and people so as to realize economic growth and reduce accidents which are increasing dramatically. In fact, car accident are ranked second to the major killer disease AIDS in terms of causing deaths and lose of property and resources. As a result, government policies to increase economic empowerment among the people are destructed by car accidents.

There are different classifications of road accidents depending on where the damage has been done on your vehicle. When a car hits another and there are minor damages on the vehicle, the accident is referred to as a rear impact car accident. An example of such an accident is when a vehicle hits another from the back due to failure of the brakes.

When a car hits another for the side, the type of accident is referred to as side impact accident. It usually occurs when a vehicle enters another vehicles lane as a result of an abrupt stop and thereby skidding at a right angle. According to Abdelane (20), in the United States, more than a third of the accidents in the US are side impact accidents. When a vehicle hits another car or object in front it is said to have undergone head on collision. This type of accident not only happens to cars but also trains.

This type of accident is commonly encountered by drunk drivers and those drivers who dose while driving. This type of accident is most likely to occur when a car enters a road from a wrong direction. When a car is involved in an accident and it turns in a manner that it lays on its side or roof, it is said to have had a roll over accident. This type of accident normally happens to tall tracks (Obenski, 3).

There are several factors that cause road accidents which comprise the following: majority of the accidents occur due the rise in the number of road users who don’t obey traffic rules, drivers who drive their cars carelessly and disobedience of the rules of traffic; the nature of the roads is also a major cause of road accidents.

The nature of infrastructure, construction of bridges which do not meet safety standards leading to defects on the road like potholes; improper maintenance of motor vehicles by the owners have caused many accidents. Some of the accidents that arise due to poor maintenance are due to failure of the breaks, improper alignment of the wheels thereby causing bursting, mechanical problems associated with the wheel, and failure of the headlights (Abdelane, 54).

Bad weather also contributes to the rise in the motor vehicle accidents. On a misty day, visibility on the road can be very bad. Cars on the road may end up colliding due to the failure of the drivers to notice vehicles in the front or back due to poor weather conditions. Other conditions of the weather that can lead to accidents growth is the presence of unexpected floods and ice on the roads.

These factors may make drivers notice their opponents late hence leading to collisions. Drivers may at times encounter distractions on the road as they drive, which may be within or outside the car. Some of the incidents arising from this error are when the attention of the driver is focused on a phone or a mirror or an interesting event outside the car while the car is in motion. It therefore follows that, anything causing the driver to concentrate outside the road is dangerous to the safety of the vehicle.

Sometimes, the designers of the roads may do a shoddy job in designing the road. This could be due to poor placements of the traffic controls like inappropriate placements of the traffic signs so that the view of the incoming traffic is blocked at risky corners of busy roads. In most cases, accidents arising from poor design are compensated by the government implying that both the owners of the vehicles and the State share the losses (Livneh, 99).

Brumitt (66) argued out that several measures can be adopted to ensure that there is reduction in the number of accidents. A lot of these measures have to do with government involvement in designing policies that guide road users but individual people must also take collective responsibility to avoid traffic offences.

Governments should establish bodies that oversee the overall implementation of set up policies like the National Road Safety Committee. The responsibility of the committee should target the following areas of concern: pile up pressure on all government departments and ministries to ensure that they give out guidelines that aim to minimize car accidents.

The committee should ensure that the lives of people are protected as well as protection of property from any losses arising from road accidents. Another effective control measure that can be taken to ensure that road accidents are reduced drastically is by keeping an accurate data base of the accidents and their causes so that it can be used to devise means of minimizing them. The records of the accident data system should be exact and consistent with assistance from established data collection systems.

By incorporating safety control measures in the school curriculum in the primary school level, a great deal will be reached in instilling safety measures to the younger generation so that they can acquire discipline of road safety measures right from initial stages of their lives to adulthood.

The authorities should ensure that only drivers who have been trained and certified drive on the road. In addition the authorities should ensure that people caught disobeying traffic rules are seriously punished by the law so as to instill discipline among the people (Brumitt, 122).

Finally, in order to attain excellent safety measures that will reduce accidents significantly, the government has to commit itself to provide funding to road safety, the private sector has to commit itself to offering technical assistance and people have to commit themselves to the safety measures.

Livneh, Ceder. Relationships between road accidents and hourly traffic flow : Accident Analysis and Prevention. New Yolk: 2008.

Obenski, Kuyt. “National Transportation Safety Board.” (2006). Web.

Road accidents are becoming a major disaster in the world. According to Abdelane of Oxford University, “over one million people die and approximately thirty million get injuries as a result of road accidents in the world.” He also adds that “road accidents are identified as the second major killer of the human population after AIDS.”

Brumitt a research analyst at Bristol University, conducted a research and found out that road accidents are caused by road users who don’t obey traffic rules, poor infrastructure of the roads and defects on the vehicles such as break failure and tire bursts.

According to Obenski of the National Transportation Safety Board, several factors cause road accidents and there is no particular sequence: it can be due to over speeding, lack of attention, cell phones and other distracters, ignorance, lack of proper training and poor maintenance of the vehicles.

Livneh and his colleagues analyzed solutions of road accidents and suggested that “the effective solutions require the coordinated efforts of governments, international organizations and agencies, local authorities and good citizenship.” “Road accidents are unavoidable” says Livneh. “But risks of road accidents can be reduced by simple precautions and thinking ahead.”

What is a Cause and Effect Essay?

A cause and effect essay explores why things happen (causes) and what happens as a result (effects). This type of essay aims to uncover the connections between events, actions, or phenomena. It helps readers understand the reasons behind certain outcomes.

In a cause and effect essay, you typically:

  • Identify the Cause: Explain the event or action that initiates a chain of events. This is the "cause."
  • Discuss the Effect: Describe the consequences or outcomes resulting from the cause.
  • Analyze the Relationship: Clarify how the cause leads to the effect, showing the cause-and-effect link.

Cause and effect essays are common in various academic disciplines. For instance, studies in sciences, history, and the social sciences rely on essential cause and effect questions. For instance, "what are the effects of climate change?", or "what are the causes of poverty?"

500 Words Essay on Road Accident

Road accidents are an unfortunate but prevalent occurrence in our society, causing a significant number of fatalities and injuries globally each year. They result from a variety of factors, including human error, mechanical failure, and environmental conditions, and their impact extends beyond the immediate victims to their families, communities, and the economy.

The primary cause of road accidents is human error, which accounts for more than 90% of all accidents. This category includes reckless driving, speeding, drunk driving, and distractions such as mobile phone use. Speeding is particularly dangerous as it reduces the driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a dangerous situation.

Mechanical failures, such as brake failure, tire blowouts, or steering failure, can also lead to accidents. Regular vehicle maintenance can prevent many of these issues, but not all drivers adhere to recommended service schedules.

Environmental factors like poor road conditions, adverse weather, and inadequate signage can contribute to accidents. Poor visibility due to fog, rain, or snow can make it difficult for drivers to see other vehicles, pedestrians, or road hazards.

Impact of Road Accidents

The immediate impact of road accidents is the loss of life and severe physical injuries, which can lead to long-term disability. However, the ripple effects extend much further. Families may lose their primary income earners, resulting in financial hardship. The emotional trauma can lead to mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety.

Road accidents also have a significant economic impact. According to the World Health Organization, road traffic crashes cost most countries 3% of their gross domestic product. Costs include the immediate medical costs, long-term rehabilitation, loss of productivity, and property damage.

Preventing Road Accidents

Preventing road accidents requires a multi-pronged approach. Stricter enforcement of traffic laws, including speed limits and drunk driving laws, can deter dangerous behavior. Education campaigns can raise awareness about the risks of distracted driving and the importance of vehicle maintenance.

Infrastructure improvements can also reduce accidents. Better road design, improved signage, and the use of technology such as traffic cameras and speed sensors can make roads safer.

Road accidents are a significant issue with far-reaching impacts. While it is impossible to prevent all accidents, a combination of law enforcement, education, and infrastructure improvements can significantly reduce their occurrence and severity. As responsible road users, we must all do our part to make our roads safer and reduce the tragic toll of road accidents.

Road Accident Essay

Collisions involving one or more automobiles are referred to as road accidents. Other "moving items," like pedestrians or bikes, may also be involved. Because of the rise in vehicles on the road, traffic accidents are commonplace in large cities. Here are a few sample essays on the topic ‘road accidents’.

Road Accident Essay

100 Words Essay On Road Accident

Nowadays, road accidents are a widespread occurrence in our country. Lack of traffic education is the main factor in many accidents. Numerous drivers operate vehicles without having received a proper education in traffic laws. The government needs to act appropriately to stop them.

I saw a terrible accident a few days ago happening right in front of me, close to my college. After my afternoon coaching class, I was returning home. No one was with me; I was by myself. A truck approached from the other side of the street at full speed as a man attempted to cross. The vehicle was moving so quickly that the man had to run to get by it. He was hit by the truck and was instantly killed. I froze on the road because I went into shock, and it was only after people gathered at the scene that I was able to move.

200 Words Essay On Road Accident

Road accidents are widespread in large cities because of the large number of trucks, buses, auto rickshaws, cars, and other vehicles. Traffic law violations are the primary cause of road accidents. This is why adherence to traffic laws must be there. However, people frequently violate them, particularly when they are aware that the police don't usually capture them. While those who disobey the law and get away with it are fortunate to avoid being caught, they put their lives in danger each time they do so.

Road accidents can occur when people violate traffic laws, such as by running red lights, exceeding the posted speed limit, etc. This is why we should always abide by the laws that are established because they are there to protect us.

To ensure that we are protected even in the event of an accident, we must always wear seat belts in cars and helmets when riding scooters or motorcycles. In order to prevent severe road accidents, we should abide by these traffic safety regulations. Because of negligent drivers, even pedestrians might suffer injuries in traffic accidents.

Many of us have probably witnessed traffic accidents in person, on television, or in the movies. They can be quite frightening, therefore we must always exercise extreme caution when we are outside.

500 Words Essay On Road Accident

Road accidents are relatively common. Road accidents are becoming increasingly common because people use personal vehicles for all types of work, which causes gathering and accidents to happen. Nowadays, the laws of the road are rarely observed by people. There are many reasons for road accidents. One of the primary reasons for road accidents is cities are populating more densely, and roads are not in good condition.

Whenever we pick up a newspaper, we find at least one or two stories involving road accidents. Road accidents cause both material and human loss. So, regardless of the kind of transportation we choose, we need to drive more cautiously. Due to increased road accidents, even those walking on the roadside are unsafe. We see accidents daily- in the news, listening to family members, and even personally on mobile phones. We should always follow traffic rules while travelling and be careful of other vehicles.

Road Accident Prevention

To decrease the death rate, we must prevent road accidents. Thousands of people lose their lives in road accidents each year. Traffic laws must be taught to children at a young age. They must be instructed on life's worth and how to preserve it. Additionally, the government must create stricter rules for those who break traffic laws. Regardless of age and gender, they must punish those guilty of breaking these rules or take additional practice.

An Experience That Changed Me

Once, I was returning home from holiday shopping when a car accident happened in front of me. It was around five o'clock in the evening, and I was with my mother. We noticed a group crowding over something in the middle of the road. We weren't entirely sure what was happening because our initial assumption was that there was a fight between two men. But when we got there, we saw there had been an accident.

We then learned the entire story. A truck struck a man crossing the street, seriously injuring him. People were asking for an ambulance as the man was bleeding heavily and lying on the ground. Time was of the essence, so we immediately contacted the ambulance.

The police then arrived as the driver was being beaten up after being captured by the crowd. When the police arrived, they grabbed the driver and questioned him about the incident. Later, we learned that the driver had been drinking. He was held by the police, who then went to the hospital to get a statement. Fortunately, it was determined that the victim was safe. His wounds were treated by the physicians, who also noted that he was still in shock.

That incident made me realise how precious our lives are. We must all be cautious when on the road, walking, or by car; that does not matter.

We should always be careful on the roads. When we drive two-wheelers, we should wear a helmet, and when we are driving a car or truck, we should wear a seat belt. Parents must also act as an example for their children by never using a phone while driving. To reduce the likelihood of an accident, they must always wear their seatbelts and helmets.

IELTS Essay, topic: Traffic accidents

  • IELTS Essays - Band 6

The best way to reduce the number of traffic accidents is to raise the age limit for younger drivers and to lower the age limit for aged drivers. Do you agree ?

Traffic accidents are on the rise these days. Most of the accidents injuries or death. Research have found that most of the accidents are caused by inexperienced drivers, for example young drivers.

cause and effect essay on road accident

The government should encourage the driving to conduct driving lessons for drivers for a longer period. This will give them a clear picture about how accidents happen and teach them about the safety of others on the road. Drivers that have been in an accident after drunk driving should be from driving for at least two years and be given driving lessons again.

To conclude, I feel that to raise the of young drivers not the best solution but to about the problems they may encounter on the road and to ban them from driving if they have caused an accident due to carelessness. As for the drivers, as long as they are capable on the road before a certain age and there are no health issues there shouldn’t be a problem.

This essay is too long; you have written 305 words instead of the advised 250-265. In the first paragraph you should have presented the topic of argument an two opinions. The main issue here is multiple spelling and grammatical errors, see comments underlined in blue for more details. The task is covered, the paragraphs are coherent and logically connected by linking words. Overall, this looks like a Band 6.5 essay.

Essay on Road Accidents: Causes and Remedies to Reduce Road Accidents

cause and effect essay on road accident

Essay on Road Accidents:  Causes and Preventive Remedies! Also learn about: 1. Causes of Road Accidents, 2. Accident Studies 3. Preventive Measures and Remedies to Reduce Accident Rates in India.

Road accidents, as the name itself suggests, are random events that are caused by the interplay of diverse factors relating to the road and its condition, the road users, the vehicles, and environmental conditions. Invariably, a combination of two or more of these factors may lead to accidents.

An undesirable feature of highway transport is the occurrence of accidents and consequent loss of lives and property. The spectacular increase of vehicles on the road has been causing a steady growth accident rates on highways. India has a poor record of road safety with a large number of accidents as well as fatalities.

This has become a major social problem and deserves special attention from the highway and traffic engineers. Based on a scientific analysis of the causes of accidents, the traffic engineer has to devise ways to reduce them through better design, construction, and maintenance of highways, and through better traffic operation and regulation.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Heavy economic losses and human misery caused by accidents indicate the need for systematic accident studies. The data obtained from an analysis of accidents helps the engineer to evolve improvement schemes and regulatory measures to enhance road safety and decrease accidents.

Essay on the Causes of Road Accidents:

Road accidents, as the name itself suggests, are random events that are caused by the interplay of diverse factors relating to the road and its condition, the road users, the vehicles, and environmental conditions. Invariably, a combination of two or more of these factors may lead to accidents.

The following is a brief summary of the causes of accidents on roads:

1. Road and Road Conditions:

Faulty geometric design components like sight distance, shoulders, super-elevation, transitions and inadequate traffic control devices cause accidents, as do slippery road conditions with inadequate friction leading to skidding and pot holes, ruts and damaged conditions of the surface.

2. Road Users:

The drivers of vehicles can cause accidents through rash driving and excessive speed, violation of traffic rules, traffic signs and signals, through fatigue due to excessive continuous driving, alcoholism and drunken driving. In addition, bus passengers can cause accidents while getting into and alighting from moving vehicles, and distracting the driver’s attention. Pedestrians using the carriageway and violating regulations can also cause accidents.

3. Vehicles:

Mechanical defects of vehicles like failure of brakes, tyre burst, and steering system invariably lead to traffic accidents.

4. Weather:

Unfavourable weather conditions such as fog, heavy rainfall, dust and smoke render driving unsafe, leading to accidents.

5. Miscellaneous:

Stray animals, unmanned level crossings, advertisement boards and hoardings affecting visibility and distracting the drivers’ attention and a host of other such things may also cause road accidents.

Accident Records:

The importance of collecting and recording accurate and comprehensive information relating to road accidents cannot be over-emphasised. Such records help to identify the causes of road accidents and evolve methods of overcoming the deficiencies observed; statistical techniques may also be used in the analysis of accident data.

The IRC have prescribed standard accident reporting forms – Form A-1-for collecting the details of an accident and Form 4 for summary of road accidents in a state during the year.

The particulars in Form A-l are in the following heads:

cause and effect essay on road accident

Different causes of the car accidents

Another cause of the car accidents is road faults. Potholes and uneven pavements, which are constructed along the road, are the real cause of these accidents altogether. Drivers have to learn and master where the potholes are on the roads in order to avoid possibilities of any form of accidents. However, strategies of mastering faulty roads are not in any way effective modes of controlling accidents since there are possibilities of new drivers in the area. Roads should, therefore, have signs, which will help the drivers to comprehend the different terrains ahead (Coller, 1969). In this case, the effects of the accident range from serious injuries to death of both the driver as well as the passengers on board. The accidents claiming lives of people affect the functioning of the organizations the victims worked for.

The other cause of car accidents is the bad weather conditions. The bad conditions can be caused by either rain or snow. As much as each and every driver is expected to be prepared for the weather changes, but often drivers are caught unaware and the resultant careless driving causes leads to accidents. The wet, snow covered and icy pavements also act to diminish the car driving safety. It is advisable for vehicles to be driven when their respective headlights are on in order to avoid head-on collisions with the other oncoming vehicles. The effects of the accidents caused as a result of bad weather ranges from serious injuries like loss of blood and perhaps amputation of legs to even more severe effects such as death itself. Death of people may lead to different transformation of the families and broken marriages.

Reckless driving and overspeeding is also a cause for major road accidents. When the stipulated limits are exceeded then the vehicle is termed as overspeeding. It should be noted that within each state there are rules and regulations, which have been established to regulate the speed at which a vehicle can be driven. These speed limits are imposed by the states for safety reasons.

On the other hand, reckless driving refers to the act of despising the traffic rules and regulations concerning the condition of the car to be driven. The reckless form of driving is characterized by aggressive driving tactics such as the changing of lanes without signaling and overtaking at wrong joints. The effects of reckless driving are also severe and they can lead to the losses of some body parts as well as death (Teina, 2006). The loss of both limbs and hands minimizes the ability of a person to work and in case it was a breadwinner involved in the accident then it ruins the financial stability of families altogether.

All in all, car accidents can be controlled through the use of the strict preventive measures formulated by the states’ traffic departments. However, it is not easy to prevent all the accidents, which occur since others are unavoidable, for instance when trees fall onto moving cars. If there is a failure in the formulation of effective precautions, then it definitely means that accidents involving cars will still remain to be the great cause of the loss of human life. The government is expected to impose strict measures on the rules governing road usage.

How the Key Bridge Collapsed in Baltimore: Maps and Photos

By Weiyi Cai ,  Agnes Chang ,  Lauren Leatherby ,  Lazaro Gamio ,  Leanne Abraham and Scott Reinhard

On Tuesday, a major bridge in Baltimore collapsed into the water seconds after it was struck by a cargo ship, sending vehicles on the bridge into the river below. The ship lost power and issued a mayday call shortly before it hit the bridge.

A video shows the cargo ship striking the bridge and the resulting collapse of the bridge.

The ship, a 948-foot-long cargo vessel called Dali, was about a half hour into its journey toward Colombo, Sri Lanka, when it hit a main pillar of the bridge. All crew members are safe, according to the ship’s owners.

Follow our live coverage .

A mayday call from the ship gave officials enough time to stop traffic at both ends of the bridge. The waters where the bridge collapsed are about 50 feet deep. By Tuesday morning, six construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the bridge remained missing as divers and other emergency workers on boats and helicopters continued to search for them. Two others had been rescued, and one was in the hospital.

Baltimore bridge collapse: what we know about the bridge, ship and port

Biden laments ‘terrible accident’ as six people still missing after Francis Scott Key Bridge snapped from collision with vessel

A bridge in the US city of Baltimore has snapped and collapsed after a ship collided with one of its support columns. Rescuers are searching the water for survivors and the state’s governor has declared a state of emergency.

Joe Biden has said search and rescue efforts remain a “top priority”, as six people are still missing. The president added there was no evidence the collapse of the bridge was intentional, calling it “a terrible accident”.

Here is what we know about the bridge, the ship and the port.

Overhead view showing collapsed sections of the bridge

Baltimore’s 1.6-mile (2.57km) Francis Scott Key Bridge was built out of steel and opened in 1977. With four lanes, the bridge is part of Interstate 695 and served as a major route along the ring road that encircles the city in the US state of Maryland.

It is named after the author of the American national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner. The Maryland governor, Wes Moore, said the bridge had been “fully up to code” before Tuesday’s collision and collapse, indicating it met safety standards.

Live video posted on YouTube showed the ship ploughing into the bridge in darkness, with its main section collapsing into the Patapsco River below.

Several vehicles fell into the water, and officials said eight construction workers assisting with a project fell off. Six people remained unaccounted for.

One official said that sonar had detected cars in the water, which is about 50ft (15 metres) deep.

The National Transportation Safety Board is dispatching a team to investigate the disastrous collapse. Andrew Barr, an expert in civil and structural engineering at the University of Sheffield, said: “The video doesn’t show any obvious structural deficiencies with the bridge, but it will not have been designed to survive a head-on collision with such a large vessel.”

The Dali, stacked with shipping containers, behind a collapsed section of the bridge

Ship-tracking data showed a Singapore-flagged container ship, the Dali, at the location of the bridge where the accident occurred at about 1.30am ET (0530 GMT) on Tuesday.

The Dali, a 290-metre (948ft) cargo vessel, left Baltimore at 1am and was headed for the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, according to the maritime data platform MarineTraffic. The shipping company Maersk said it had chartered the vessel.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) confirmed that the vessel was registered in Singapore and said the agency was coordinating with the US Coast Guard and the ship’s management company to help. It also said it would investigate the incident itself.

Moore said the ship had lost power around the time it hit the bridge and the vessel’s crew had issued a “mayday” radio call. The ship then appeared to catch fire as part of the bridge collapsed over it, sending plumes of thick, black smoke into the air.

The shipping company Maersk said that it chartered the container ship in Baltimore, with the operator named as Synergy Marine Group. Maersk confirmed that there were 22 crew, and said they were all Indian. None of them were Maersk crew or personnel.

Reuters cited the manager of the ship, Synergy Marine Group, as saying the crew, including the two pilots, had been accounted for and there were no reports of injuries onboard.

Maersk added that there were 4,679 containers on board, roughly half of its 10,000 capacity.

The same vessel was also involved in a collision in 2016 in Antwerp, Belgium, according to VesselFinder and the maritime incident archive Shipwrecklog. At the time, the stern scraped the side of the quay, significantly damaging several metres of the hull. There were reportedly no injuries or adverse pollution and the weather was reported to be fine at the time. The incident was reportedly blamed on the ship’s master and pilot onboard.

The harbour is one of the busiest in the country and an important hub for shipping on the US east coast, especially in transporting road vehicles. It also handles farming, construction machinery and coal, according to a Maryland government website.

Port traffic was suspended until further notice after the bridge collapse.

How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes

By Rohan Mattu

Updated on: April 1, 2024 / 8:13 AM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early on the morning of March 26  led to a major traffic impact for the region and cut off a major artery into and out of the port city.

Drivers are told to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.

Locator map showing the typical traffic routes of cargo vessels passing beneath the bridge and the trajectory Dali followed before the collision.

Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future.

The outer loop I-695 closure shifted to exit 1/Quarantine Road (past the Curtis Creek Drawbridge) to allow for enhanced local traffic access.

The inner loop of I-695 remains closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed.

Alternate routes are I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes.

Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping.

The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA.

Tractor-trailer inspections

Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic.

The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).

Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.

March 28, 2024 - Baltimore Key Bridge collapse

By Antoinette Radford, Maureen Chowdhury , Tori B. Powell , Elise Hammond and Aditi Sangal , CNN

Our live coverage has ended. Follow the latest news on the Baltimore bridge collapse or read through the updates below.

Here's what we learned from the authorities this evening

From CNN staff

The sun sets on the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Thursday, March 28.

The federal government has given Maryland officials the $60 million requested to cover the first steps of responding to  the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge , according to a Federal Highway Administration news release.

Federal Highway Administration chief Shailen Bhatt said the emergency funding would go toward removing debris, rerouting traffic and ultimately rebuilding the bridge.

Here's what else the authorities said in a news briefing this evening:

  • Four directives to recovery: Gov. Wes Moore outlined four main priorities as Maryland looks to recover after the bridge collapse. The directives include: Continued focus on efforts to recover the construction workers presumed dead "to bring a sense of closure to these families," open the channel and restart traffic to the port, taking care of those affected, rebuilding the Key Bridge.
  • Murky water conditions: Moore said the " water is so dark , and debris is so dense, that in most instances our divers cannot see more than a foot or two in front of them."
  • Major resources mobilized: The Army Corps of Engineers is moving the largest crane in the Eastern Seaboard to Baltimore to help clear the channel, and it is expect to arrive later on Thursday evening, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said. Clearing the channel has been an important goal so trade and traffic through the port can resume. The Army Corps of Engineers plan to cover the full cost of clearing the channel where Baltimore's Key Bridge collapsed, Sen. Chris Van Hollen said Thursday.
  • One larger vehicle detected underwater: There's at least one vehicle of a large size that has been detected underwater, and it is encapsulated by the superstructure of the bridge, concrete and other things, according to Col. Roland L. Butler Jr., the superintendent of Maryland State Police.
  • Monitoring possible leaks and pollution: Over 2,400 feet of boom have been deployed to contain any leaks of pollution in the aftermath of the collapse of the Key Bridge, Moore said. Separately, 14 containers on the ship were impacted , and they contained items like soap and perfume, Coast Guard Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said, adding that he did not have information on whether any of those materials went overboard. Air monitors are in place to track any potential threats and they have not picked up any threats so far, Gilreath said.

There's at least 1 larger vehicle underwater, official says

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

There's at least one vehicle of a large size that has been detected underwater, according to Col. Roland L. Butler Jr., the superintendent of Maryland State Police.

"There's at least one vehicle, larger in size, that is completely encapsulated by the superstructure of the bridge, concrete," among other things, Butler said Thursday evening. "It's going to take some time to get to that, and it's going to take some time to do that carefully" before divers can go to recover that vehicle, he added.

2,400 feet of boom was used to contain possible toxic materials, Maryland governor says

Wreckage lies across the deck of the Dali cargo vessel in Baltimore on Wednesday.

There have been over 2,400 feet of boom deployed to contain any leaks of pollution in the aftermath of the collapse of the Key Bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said Thursday.

He said he personally did not see any sheen on the water when he went to assess the situation on site.

Remember: 56 containers with hazardous materials were found on the vessel.

There are 14 containers on the ship were impacted, and they contained items like soap and perfume, Coast Guard Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said at the briefing, adding that he did not have information on whether any of those materials went overboard.

Air monitors are in place to track any potential threats and they have not picked up any threats so far, Gilreath added.

Baltimore mayor says he remains hopeful bodies of other workers will be recovered

From CNN's Elise Hammond

Baltimore's mayor said he is still "hopeful" the bodies of the other workers presumed dead will be recovered.

Authorities announced on Wednesday they were pausing search and recovery efforts  for the four other workers presumed dead because debris made it unsafe for divers to continue. Once this next phase of salvage operations is complete and the debris is cleared, divers will search for more remains.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said that during the salvage operation, he hopes "we are able to recover those who remain missing and bring them home to their families.

The mayor said he directed his administration to work with the governor’s office “on any and every effort that must be taken.”

Army Corps of Engineers will bear the full cost of clearing the channel, Sen. Chris Van Hollen says

Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen speaks at a press conference Thursday.

The Army Corps of Engineers will cover the full cost of clearing the channel where Baltimore's Key Bridge collapsed, Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen said Thursday.

"We all recognize that getting the Port of Baltimore running again at full speed is a priority given all the jobs that are associated with it, all the small businesses, all the other businesses," Sen. Van Hollen said at Thursday's news briefing. "And as the governor pointed out, this is not just a Maryland issue, it's a national and global question."

The largest crane in the Eastern Seaboard is expected to arrive in Baltimore later today, governor says

The Army Corps of Engineers is moving the largest crane in the Eastern Seaboard to Baltimore to help clear the channel, and it is expected to arrive Thursday evening, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said.

"Under the leadership of Col. (Estee S.) Pinchasin, the Army Corps is moving the largest crane in the Eastern Seaboard to Baltimore to help us," Moore said at a news conference. "It is estimated that will arrive later this evening."

"It's a 1,000-ton crane coming around midnight," Sen. Chris Van Hollen said at the same news conference. "And another 400-ton crane coming Saturday for the operations to clear the channel."

The post was updated with information about the crane from Sen. Van Hollen.

Officials are assessing pieces of the bridge before they pull them out of the water, Coast Guard says

Coast Guard Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath speaks at a press conference Thursday.

Officials working to remove the collapsed Key Bridge from the channel are conducting a full assessment of all pieces of debris before they can lift them out of the water, Coast Guard Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath.

This assessment is critical in figuring out how to cut the bridge into the right size pieces so cranes can lift them out, he said.

“We are doing those assessments right now with underwater surveys, with engineering teams back in unified command,” Gilreath said, adding that the assessment is in coordination with several other partners, including the US Army Corp of Engineers.

“That is our number one priority is to reopen the Port of Baltimore as fast as we can, and do it safely,” he added.

Murky conditions are hindering divers' vision during underwater operations, Maryland governor says

Water conditions are hindering divers' visibility as they conduct recovery operations, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said Thursday.

"That water is so dark, and debris is so dense, that in most instances our divers cannot see more than a foot or two in front of them," Moore said at a news briefing. "So much of the operation is simply feel."
