How to Write the “Why Computer Science?” Essay

What’s covered:, what is the purpose of the “why computer science” essay, elements of a good computer science essay, computer science essay example, where to get your essay edited.

You will encounter many essay prompts as you start applying to schools, but if you are intent on majoring in computer science or a related field, you will come across the “ Why Computer Science? ” essay archetype. It’s important that you know the importance behind this prompt and what constitutes a good response in order to make your essay stand out.

For more information on writing essays, check out CollegeVine’s extensive essay guides that include everything from general tips, to essay examples, to essay breakdowns that will help you write the essays for over 100 schools.

Colleges ask you to write a “ Why Computer Science? ” essay so you may communicate your passion for computer science, and demonstrate how it aligns with your personal and professional goals. Admissions committees want to see that you have a deep interest and commitment to the field, and that you have a vision for how a degree in computer science will propel your future aspirations.

The essay provides an opportunity to distinguish yourself from other applicants. It’s your chance to showcase your understanding of the discipline, your experiences that sparked or deepened your interest in the field, and your ambitions for future study and career. You can detail how a computer science degree will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to make a meaningful contribution in this rapidly evolving field.

A well-crafted “ Why Computer Science? ” essay not only convinces the admissions committee of your enthusiasm and commitment to computer science, but also provides a glimpse of your ability to think critically, solve problems, and communicate effectively—essential skills for a  computer scientist.

The essay also gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the specific computer science program at the college or university you are applying to. You can discuss how the program’s resources, faculty, curriculum, and culture align with your academic interests and career goals. A strong “ Why Computer Science? ” essay shows that you have done your research, and that you are applying to the program not just because you want to study computer science, but because you believe that this particular program is the best fit for you.

Writing an effective “ Why Computer Science ?” essay often requires a blend of two popular college essay archetypes: “ Why This Major? ” and “ Why This College? “.

Explain “Why This Major?”

The “ Why This Major? ” essay is an opportunity for you to dig deep into your motivations and passions for studying Computer Science. It’s about sharing your ‘origin story’ of how your interest in Computer Science took root and blossomed. This part of your essay could recount an early experience with coding, a compelling Computer Science class you took, or a personal project that sparked your fascination.

What was the journey that led you to this major? Was it a particular incident, or did your interest evolve over time? Did you participate in related activities, like coding clubs, online courses, hackathons, or internships?

Importantly, this essay should also shed light on your future aspirations. How does your interest in Computer Science connect to your career goals? What kind of problems do you hope to solve with your degree?

The key for a strong “ Why This Major? ” essay is to make the reader understand your connection to the subject. This is done through explaining your fascination and love for computer science. What emotions do you feel when you are coding? How does it make you feel when you figure out the solution after hours of trying? What aspects of your personality shine when you are coding?

By addressing these questions, you can effectively demonstrate a deep, personal, and genuine connection with the major.

Emphasize “Why This College?”

The “ Why This College? ” component of the essay demonstrates your understanding of the specific university and its Computer Science program. This is where you show that you’ve done your homework about the college, and you know what resources it has to support your academic journey.

What unique opportunities does the university offer for Computer Science students? Are there particular courses, professors, research opportunities, or clubs that align with your interests? Perhaps there’s a study abroad program or an industry partnership that could give you a unique learning experience. Maybe the university has a particular teaching methodology that resonates with you.

Also, think about the larger university community. What aspects of the campus culture, community, location, or extracurricular opportunities enhance your interest in this college? Remember, this is not about general praises but about specific features that align with your goals. How will these resources and opportunities help you explore your interests further and achieve your career goals? How does the university’s vision and mission resonate with your own values and career aspirations?

It’s important when discussing the school’s resources that you always draw a connection between the opportunity and yourself. For example, don’t tell us you want to work with X professor because of their work pioneering regenerative AI. Go a step further and say because of your goal to develop AI surgeons for remote communities, learning how to strengthen AI feedback loops from X professor would bring you one step closer to achieving your dream.

By articulating your thoughts on these aspects, you demonstrate a strong alignment between the college and your academic goals, enhancing your appeal as a prospective student.

Demonstrate a Deep Understanding of Computer Science

As with a traditional “ Why This Major? ” essay, you must exhibit a deep and clear understanding of computer science. Discuss specific areas within the field that pique your interest and why. This could range from artificial intelligence to software development, or from data science to cybersecurity.

What’s important is to not just boast and say “ I have a strong grasp on cybersecurity ”, but instead use your knowledge to show your readers your passion: “ After being bombarded with cyber attack after cyber attack, I explained to my grandparents the concept of end-to-end encryption and how phishing was not the same as a peaceful afternoon on a lake. ”

Make it Fun!

Students make the mistake of thinking their college essays have to be serious and hyper-professional. While you don’t want to be throwing around slang and want to present yourself in a positive light, you shouldn’t feel like you’re not allowed to have fun with your essay. Let your personality shine and crack a few jokes.

You can, and should, also get creative with your essay. A great way to do this in a computer science essay is to incorporate lines of code or write the essay like you are writing out code.

Now we will go over a real “ Why Computer Science? ” essay a student submitted and explore what the essay did well, and where there is room for improvement.

Please note: Looking at examples of real essays students have submitted to colleges can be very beneficial to get inspiration for your essays. You should never copy or plagiarize from these examples when writing your own essays. Colleges can tell when an essay isn’t genuine and will not view students favorably if they plagiarized.

I held my breath and hit RUN. Yes! A plump white cat jumped out and began to catch the falling pizzas. Although my Fat Cat project seems simple now, it was the beginning of an enthusiastic passion for computer science. Four years and thousands of hours of programming later, that passion has grown into an intense desire to explore how computer science can serve society. Every day, surrounded by technology that can recognize my face and recommend scarily-specific ads, I’m reminded of Uncle Ben’s advice to a young Spiderman: “with great power comes great responsibility”. Likewise, the need to ensure digital equality has skyrocketed with AI’s far-reaching presence in society; and I believe that digital fairness starts with equality in education.

The unique use of threads at the College of Computing perfectly matches my interests in AI and its potential use in education; the path of combined threads on Intelligence and People gives me the rare opportunity to delve deep into both areas. I’m particularly intrigued by the rich sets of both knowledge-based and data-driven intelligence courses, as I believe AI should not only show correlation of events, but also provide insight for why they occur.

In my four years as an enthusiastic online English tutor, I’ve worked hard to help students overcome both financial and technological obstacles in hopes of bringing quality education to people from diverse backgrounds. For this reason, I’m extremely excited by the many courses in the People thread that focus on education and human-centered technology. I’d love to explore how to integrate AI technology into the teaching process to make education more available, affordable, and effective for people everywhere. And with the innumerable opportunities that Georgia Tech has to offer, I know that I will be able to go further here than anywhere else.

What the Essay Did Well

This essay perfectly accomplishes the two key parts of a “ Why Computer Science? ” essay: answering “ Why This Major? ” and “ Why This College? ”. Not to mention, we get a lot of insight into this student and what they care about beyond computer science, and a fun hook at the beginning.

Starting with the “ Why This Major? ” aspect of the response, this essay demonstrates what got the student into computer science, why they are passionate about the subject, and what their goals are. They show us their introduction to the world of CS with an engaging hook: “I held my breath and hit RUN. Yes! A plump white cat jumped out and began to catch the falling pizzas. ” We then see this is a core passion because they spent “ Four years and thousands of hours ,” coding.

The student shows us why they care about AI with the sentence, “ Every day, surrounded by technology that can recognize my face and recommend scarily-specific ads ,” which makes the topic personal by demonstrating their fear at AI’s capabilities. But, rather than let panic overwhelm them, the student calls upon Spiderman and tells us their goal of establishing digital equality through education. This provides a great basis for the rest of the essay, as it thoroughly explains the students motivations and goals, and demonstrates their appreciation for interdisciplinary topics.

Then, the essay shifts into answering “ Why This College? ”, which it does very well by honing in on a unique facet of Georgia Tech’s College of Computing: threads. This is a great example of how to provide depth to the school resources you mention. The student describes the two threads and not only why the combination is important to them, but how their previous experiences (i.e. online English tutor) correlate to the values of the thread: “ For this reason, I’m extremely excited by the many courses in the People thread that focus on education and human-centered technology. ”

What Could Be Improved

This essay does a good job covering the basics of the prompt, but it could be elevated with more nuance and detail. The biggest thing missing from this essay is a strong core to tie everything together. What do we mean by that? We want to see a common theme, anecdote, or motivation that is weaved throughout the entire essay to connect everything. Take the Spiderman quote for example. If this was expanded, it could have been the perfect core for this essay.

Underlying this student’s interest in AI is a passion for social justice, so they could have used the quote about power and responsibility to talk about existing injustices with AI and how once they have the power to create AI they will act responsibly and help affected communities. They are clearly passionate about equality of education, but there is a disconnect between education and AI that comes from a lack of detail. To strengthen the core of the essay, this student needs to include real-world examples of how AI is fostering inequities in education. This takes their essay from theoretical to practical.

Computer science personal statement examples

Now that we’ve covered the basics of what a computer science personal statement should include, let’s take a look at some computer science personal statement examples.

“I have been programming since I was 12 years old, and ever since then I have been fascinated by the possibilities that computer science offers. I am motivated by the idea of being able to create something from scratch and see it come to life, and I know that computer science will allow me to do just that. In addition, I have experience in working with code from different languages, which has taught me how to think critically and solve problems. My skills in critical thinking and problem solving are essential for studying computer science, as they will allow me to tackle complex challenges head-on.

Apart from my skills and experience, I am also passionate about learning new things. This is why during my free time I volunteered for Code for America, where I worked with a team of designers and developers to build a civic engagement platform. This experience showed me the importance of collaboration when it comes to creating something amazing, and it solidified my belief that teamwork is key to success.

Another project I got involved with was the development of a computer game for blind children. This project was important to me because it allowed me to use my skills for something good, and it also showed me how computer science can be used to create inclusive technologies.

Last year, I also had the opportunity to intern at Lyft, where I worked on a team that developed a new feature for the Lyft app. This experience was invaluable, as it gave me insights into the inner workings of one of the world’s most successful companies. It also showed me how computer science can be used to solve real-world problems.

Ultimately, I believe that I would be an excellent candidate for your computer science program because of my passion for the field combined with my skills and experience. I am confident that I have what it takes to succeed in computer science, and I hope to use my skills and knowledge to make a difference in the world.”

“I have always been interested in the way computers work and how they can be used to solve problems. This interest began when I was very young and has continued to grow as I have gotten older. My father is a computer scientist, so I have been exposed to computer science my entire life. In high school, I took several computer science courses and really enjoyed them. I also competed in several programming competitions and did well in them. In the following essay, I want to highlight my accomplishments as a computer science candidate and express my passion for this exciting field.

I am a computer science major at *NAME* University. I have taken several computer science courses and have gotten exceptional grades. My favorite course so far has been Introduction to Algorithms, for which I worked as a teaching assistant during my third year. I also competed in the Association for Computing Machinery International Collegiate Programming Contest, and our team placed in the top 100 out of 6,000 teams worldwide. This experience showed me that I have the ability to solve complex problems and work well under pressure.

As a student, I also worked as a part-time research assistant in the AI and Robotics laboratory, where I assisted in the development of a computer vision system for an autonomous robot. This experience allowed me to develop my skills in programming and computer science. In addition, I have also been a member of the Student Senate and have served on the Executive Board of the Student Government Association. These experiences have allowed me to develop leadership skills and learn how to work with others.

I am interested in computer science because it is a field that is constantly changing and evolving. There are always new problems to solve and new ways to solve them. I find this challenge exciting and invigorating. I am also interested in computer science because it is a field that combines creativity with logic. I enjoy using both my creative and logical sides when solving problems.

I am applying to your program specifically because I believe that it will allow me to further develop my skills in computer science. I am looking forward to taking classes from renowned professors and working with other talented students. I believe that your program will provide me with the skills and knowledge that I need to become a successful computer scientist.”

“Computers have always been a part of my life. As a toddler, I would watch my father work on computer programs for his business. Fascinated by the blinking cursor on the screen, I would ask him what he was doing and how it worked. My parents bought me my first computer when I was in grade school and I taught myself how to program in BASIC.

Since then, computer science has been my passion. I have pursued every opportunity to learn more about it, including taking computer science courses in high school and college and working as a research assistant for a computer science professor. I am excited to continue learning about computer science at the graduate level and to pursue a career in this field.

One of my biggest accomplishments in the field of computer science so far has been developing a computer program that can generate 3D models of human faces. This program has the potential to be used in a variety of applications, such as video game development, computer-aided design, and even law enforcement. I am currently working on submitting this program to a computer science conference for publication.

I have also been involved in a number of extracurricular activities related to computer science. I am a member of the Association for Computing Machinery and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. I have also volunteered my time to teach computer science to elementary and middle school students through a local program called Girls Who Code.

Besides this, I have worked on several personal coding projects of my own. For example, I created a computer program that can solve Sudoku puzzles by using a technique called constraint satisfaction. I also developed a website for a local business called Joe’s pizzeria. My skills in computer science have also helped me in my other hobbies, such as photography and video editing. For the latter, I made a light correction tool that can automatically color-correct a video based on the primer of a still image.

I believe that my passion for computer science, as well as my experience in the field, makes me an ideal candidate for a graduate program in computer science. I am excited to continue learning and expanding my skills in computer science so that I can make an impact in this field. For this reason, I am excited to submit an early decision application to your computer science graduate program.”

What should I do after I have my first draft?

After you have completed the first draft of your computer science personal statement, you should follow these steps to edit, polish, and finalize your computer science personal statement:

1. Check the word count : Most programs will give you a word or a page limit for your computer science personal statement. Make sure you stay within that limit, as going over it can make you seem like you can’t follow instructions.

2. Proofread and edit it : This step is crucial. A well-written and error-free computer science personal statement will make you look more professional and competent. Use spell check and grammar check , and then have someone else proofread it for you.

3. Ask for feedback : Once you’ve proofread and edited your computer science personal statement, ask a few people for their feedback. Choose people whose opinions you trust and who will be honest with you.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 as needed : After you’ve received feedback, make the necessary changes to your computer science personal statement. Then, proofread and edit it again. Repeat this cycle until you’re happy with your statement.

5. Modify personal statement for each program : Don’t just submit the same computer science personal statement to every program you apply to. Tailor it to each individual program, highlighting why you’re a good fit for that specific school.

6. Submit : Once you’re happy with your computer science personal statement, submit it along with the rest of your application.

Make sure you give yourself enough time to do all of the steps above so that you can submit a strong statement. Remember, this is just one part of your overall application package, so make sure all other elements are strong as well—such as your grades, letters of recommendation , and resume.

We hope that this guide has been helpful and that you feel more confident in your ability to write a stellar computer science personal statement. Remember, the most important thing is to be yourself and let your passion for computer science shine through. As long as you are genuine and articulate your interest in the field, you are sure to impress admissions officers. Best of luck!

Career goals – computer science.

318 words | 2 page(s)

I am currently an undergraduate majoring in Computer Science, with a passion for discovering the potential of computer technology to solve problems and create possibilities. Although I am not yet sure exactly which career I wish to pursue in the future, my interests are focused on two key areas: computer security and artificial intelligence. As technology and computing systems continue to develop at exponential rates, the need for specialists in cyber-security is only likely to grow; such specialists are almost like virtual detectives, pitching their resources against the formidable expertise of those who seek to breach security protections, and policing the cyber world.

A career in this field involves wide-ranging computing skills, an innovative approach to problem solving, and the ability to adapt quickly and flexibly to changing situations. With so many industries increasingly reliant on technology, it is also likely that specialists will remain in high demand, with competitive salaries and good job security. I am also, however, attracted to a career in artificial intelligence. Exploring the ways in which humans and computers can evolve in tandem, this field seems to me to represent the cutting-edge of computer science. This field is likely to see the most innovative applications of computing technology in the future, and as such a career in artificial intelligence is an exciting and inspiring prospect.

Education Goals in Computer Science Studies Essay

Involvements.

The main reason for choosing better and advanced education in a competitive field of study lies in a personal perspective of life. It is also a challenge and over persistence or needs to advance knowledge, especially in this era of computerization and technologically advancing platforms. Considering the current situation all over the world, everything seems to involve some change in technology and way of life as a measure to aggressively meeting the harsh economic experiences.

Most people will agree that life depends on information technological panache such as the internet, cable or mobile television, and another phenomenal advancement. Technology completely saturates the current lifestyles. To computer scientists, technology is a useful tool for confronting future problems, thus the need to accept and probe deeper.

Understanding the technological world is inevitable, and it is the only essential strategy for anyone living in the 21st century. Everybody ought to understand that technology is here to stay. Other than the great opportunity of creativity and innovativeness, computing is a pillar to careers, offering a wide range of lucrative choices. Lastly, there is a need to mention that future opportunities are almost impossible to predict; they have no boundaries, and the need for advancement will constantly cause one to wait in anticipation for a better lifestyle.

As a student, I have had some rewarding and equally challenging experiences. Regardless of the field, one has to venture into or engage, majoring in a certain field gives one competitive advantage and great chances of gaining extra unique knowledge or skills, problem-solving tactics, and logical thinking formulas.

Integrating the theoretical knowledge into the practical world requires one to acquire competence in solving tough multi-dimensional problems that necessitate deep imagination and sensitivity to quite a number of apprehensions. Digital advancement is the main catalyst for positive development or innovations in almost every field. Considering some of the general challenges, for one to make a positive difference in learning, there is a need to incorporate technological advancement into the normal or current challenges. Advancement calls for creativity and patience to deliver the required output. Some knowledge of computation assists one to integrate some individual flairs and imaginations in any field to make it better, interesting, and easier.

Having participated in an excellent competition as a team-leader, anyone would have guessed that the main gain from such a forum would be in the advancement of knowledge or strategies. Such forums or educational competitions come with a lot more than knowledge-gain. As a leader, I acquired meaningful existence and interpersonal relationships through a built-up rapport among people of the same career interest but different backgrounds.

Besides the academic skills, the challenge gave the team a social and teamwork development platform. The competition gave students a chance to interact with a diverse group of participants and collaborate in celebrating their accomplishments and passions. Because of the diversity of the contestants, the presentations were technologically up-to-date in comparison to our team.

Besides the interactions, our team had to engage in some critical thinking, analysis and thus change some aspects in the presentation as a way of ensuring our acquired skills had a close link to future development or modernization. It was a learning experience that critical thinking presents the power to engage precarious advances, to meet the situations. Top leadership enables one to gain critical guidance skills to meet situational demands. A good leader has to make smart choices or decisions, such as a change of strategies.

Life challenges will increase, but the biggest of them all is the ability to manage technology and accept it as the catalyst for positive change in society. Computation is a channel of information, which is very useful in solving most current and future challenges in all careers, but we must work in close reference to Martin Luther King, saying, “The true goal of education is intelligence and character.”

Why did you choose computer science? Sample answers & more

Computer science is one of the most popular study programs in the last fifteen years. And it likely won’t chance anytime soon. The demand for programmers, designers, testers, engineers and other IT professionals exceeds the supply , and as fresh graduate with a degree from computer science you won’t have a problem getting a job . Not many people can say the same about their study program. But is this a good enough reason to mention on your application , or in the school admission interview ? We will try to find the answer on the following lines.

First of all, there’s no shame in wanting to earn well, and to live a decent life. Money cannot buy happiness, but it is hard to live a happy life when bills are pressing you , and you have to count every cent to make sure you won’t end up on the street the next month. Secondly, the primary aim of any college studies is to allow you to apply for better jobs (in the given field of study). You can definitely refer to it in your answer. Having said that, good job with a high salary should not be your only reason . You should have other motives as well…

Let’s have a look at 7 sample answers to this interesting question. I tried to include a variety of answers on my list–with a variety of reasons, including some unconventional responses . Go through them, pick one that resonates with you , and do not forget to read also my conclusion and final tips at the end of this post.

7 sample answers to “Why did you choose computer science as your course?” interview question

  • I just enjoy working on the computer more than anything else. I’ve been messing around with programming since I was thirteen, designing simple websites and games. And I must say that I’ve done well, and enjoyed the process , and it motivated me to pursue my studies in the field, and eventually get a job with some interesting game studio or similar company. I believe that we should do for a living something we enjoy doing . And I enjoy programming, and bachelor in computer science was therefor an obvious choice.
  • First of all, I see a huge perspective in the field . The technology keeps evolving, with robotics and AI playing the prime in recent years. But I think we are far from the end, and the demand for motivated computer scientists will only continue to grow . This cannot be said about many other jobs with uncertain future. Robots will replace humans in certain professions, but it won’t be the case with people who design and program these robots . And that’s the side of the barricade where I’d like to stand once I finish the university. The degree in computer science is an important step on this journey.
  • Speaking honestly, money drives me more than anything else . Just look at the 10 richest companies in the US, or 10 richest men. Most of them come from technological background . And I also want to earn well, so why not eating my fraction of this juicy pie ? Of course, I know the road ahead is long, and I most likely won’t become the next Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos. But I want to leave my mark in the world , and I definitely want to study computer science, and one day start my own business in the field .
  • I just find the field a great match for my introverted personality and my analytical skills . I’ve always excelled in Math, and I found it easy to write the code , for some school projects I’ve participated on. What’s more, though it may sound strange, I’ve always enjoyed the time I spent on my own , working on the computer, or watching documentaries. I just find IT a fitting field for my skills and personality, and cannot imagine studying anything else.
  • Computer science is, in my opinion, the job field with a great outlook . I’ve actually got some job offers already while studying at high school , because I helped to solve some coding puzzles on various online forums, and some people spotted a talent in me. But I do not want to work yet. I want to study, take my coding skills to another level, earn a degree from a great university like this one , and eventually get an inspiring job with one of the tech giants . That’s a plan, and I believe I can make it come true, if I study hard and dedicate myself to my mission.
  • I know it may sound strange, especially when I already have a degree from history . Computer science and history is not a typical combination. Life is unpredictable though, things do happen, and I find it hard to provide for my family with the job I have as a historian . Everyone know there’s huge potential in IT, and the salaries people in the field earn are second to none. I’d love to study online and earn my bachelor in computer science, to be able to apply for jobs with much better salaries, and improve the living conditions for me and my family. That’s why I chose this computer science course.
  • I have great GPA , and I definitely had a chance to apply for any study program, at almost any university. And it was not easy to choose, because I find many things interesting , and one can have an impact and thrive in many different jobs. But I’ve done the career test, and also talked a lot to the school counselor , trying to understand better what I expect from life , what I really excel in, and then match it with a fitting study program . Computer science ended up the best choice, and I am thrilled to apply with your amazing university.

Special Tip: What if I told you that you can practice your answers to ALL tricky interview questions you may get while trying to get to a computer science study program or secure the internship in the field, and get an immediate feedback from a life-like AI interview coach ? And that you can start doing it for free , and it is a lot of fun too? 🙂 Check out this page on our partner website , Real Mock Interviews, pick a question and start practicing for free , either on your mobile phone or on your computer. Enjoy and thank me later!

The question is one of your opportunities to praise the people in the admission committee

They ask why computer science, but you can actually answer two questions with your response–why computer science, and why their university . Give them some words of praise. You can even point our particular courses you are looking forward to, some stellar teachers who teach at their university, excellent campus and research opportunities , or anything else that caught your eye.

Remember that members of the admission committee are just people, like you or me. They also have their needs and dreams, and, just like everyone else, they enjoy when someone recognizes their good work . Praising the study program and study environment, you are in fact praising people who work at the college, because they are responsible for the study program, and for the successes of the school.

computer science career essay

Show your enthusiasm for the field, outline your future plans

The more specific you are in your answer, the better . Because having specific and tangible goal will help you navigate the tricky study program and pass the exams . Perhaps toy want to work at Google one day , working on tools billions of people use all around the world.

Or you want to start your own business –a game design studio, graphic design studio, or some innovative startup, working on the next big thing . Let your imagination soar. Things you say in the interviews do not have to come true–and nobody will remember what you said one day , when just trying to get in. But it definitely helps to have some career goals and plans which give a meaning to your studies, and will help you with your motivation in difficult times …

Ready to answer this one? I hope so! Do not forget to check also sample answers to other tricky questions you may face while trying to get to the college:

I plan to pursue a career in computer science. Computer scientists study theoretical and practical approaches to computation. They also work to design systems that enable the processing, communication and storage of information. I expect to spend some time working as a software developer . In the long term, I am interested in developing my own technology startup company.

Computer science is very important to today's economy. The field of computer science is typically associated with the development of computer programs. Computer programs enable companies to conduct their business. Program improvements can have a very important influence over the ability of businesses to be efficient and successful.

However, the field of computer science is not limited to programming. Networks, security protocols and computer networks are all created by computer science professionals. Furthermore, individuals with advanced computer science degrees may also go on to instruct the next generation of degree majors. In essence, individuals who earn computer science degrees develop skills that enable them to develop new products capable of revolutionizing the world.

The economic significance of computer science is illustrated by the wide range of career opportunities. Computer science is a very versatile degree. Individuals with computer science degrees can be found working in both the public and the private sectors. They work in a wide range of industries, such as technology, finance and security.

The importance of computer science to the economy is also demonstrated by high economic demand for persons with this degree background. A recent study conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers aimed to identify the degrees that will be most in demand by employers in 2015, and the results of the study demonstrated that computer science will be one of the most sought-after degrees. As Susan Adams explains in an article published by Forbes, " For bachelor's and master's graduates, finance, accounting and computer science take the top three slots ." The study's methodology involved surveying 260 companies to determine their hiring plans for the upcoming year. Of the companies surveyed, 120 reported that they plan to hire persons with bachelor's degrees in computer science. That amounts to 46 percent of the respondents, or almost half, who plan to hire computer science undergraduate majors. Within the context of master's degree hires, fewer companies were looking to hire individuals with master's degrees in any category, but computer science ranked as the second most popular degree sought. It was beaten just by finance. These results are important because they show immediately the importance of computer science to the current economy. Computer science degrees are in high demand, and employers are willing to pay high salaries to individuals who majored in this field. Businesses would not be willing to recruit individuals with a computer science degree if they did not see the degree as important to their business.

Of course, the economic importance of computer science is also due to the entrepreneurial potential of the field. Many persons with computer science degrees elect to start their own businesses, driven by the economic demand for their new projects and services. Small businesses owned by individuals are an essential component of the American economy, and the advent of the Internet has enabled even small companies to meet the demand of consumers found around the world. Therefore, individuals with this degree are not dependent upon the existence of employers looking to hire them.

The government plays a role in my future career prospects as both a facilitator of my education and as a potential employer. First of all, college isn't free. The availability of affordable school loans is essential to my education, particularly if I decide to attend graduate school in order to earn an advanced degree. The federal government plays a major role in providing loan aid to students, and the federal government also determines whether loan forgiveness for particular careers, degrees or student groups is an option. Therefore, government policy that impacts the availability or payback requirements of student loans will influence my ability to obtain a degree, which will in turn influence the job opportunities that are available to me. Any advanced degrees or costly certifications I may earn in the future, in particular, will be dependent upon the availability of student aid.

In addition, the government is an important employer of individuals with computer science degrees. For example, individuals with this degree are employed at government agencies like the National Security Agency (NSA), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Government leaders have control over the budgets of these agencies. Increased budgets could create additional employment opportunities, whereas budget cuts could decrease the number of government jobs available to me.

In conclusion, my career plans involve the field of computer science. I know that I have to gain educational and professional experience in the field. This experience will allow me to hone my skills and experiment with new ideas. Then, in the long run, the flexibility of the degree should allow me to start my own company. A career in computer science opens doors to many different employment opportunities, including job opportunities in the public sector. The wide range of career opportunities found in the public and private sectors, as well as the strong demand for individuals holding this degree illustrate the importance of computer science to today's economy.

Facility for Rare Isotope Beams

At michigan state university, frib professorial assistant earns goldwater scholarship.

Aaron Philip, a professorial assistant at FRIB, has earned a  Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship , becoming Michigan State University’s fifty-fifth Goldwater Scholar.

The Goldwater Foundation seeks sophomores and juniors committed to a research career in STEM fields with the potential for significant future contribution in their chosen field. The award provides $7,500 per year in funding for 51 students for undergraduate tuition and living expenses.

For the 2024 Goldwater Scholarship competition, 1,353 undergraduates were nominated by 446 institutions. Philip was among 438 scholars selected. The funding for the award is a collaboration between the U.S. Congress and the Department of Defense’s National Defense Education Program.

Philip is a second-year Michigan State University student from Los Alamos, New Mexico studying Physics and Advanced Mathematics in the College of Natural Science. He is also a member of the Honors College.

“I am honored and humbled to join the ranks of Spartan Goldwater Scholars. I share this recognition with my professors, research mentors, fellow students, and family who have all supported me and cultivated my passion to pursue a career in physics research,” Philip said. “Specifically, I would like to thank my research mentors over the past few years for their guidance, encouragement, and mentorship: Drs. Pablo Giuliani, Kyle Godbey, Witek Nazarewicz, Odelia Schwartz, Jianliang Qian, and Benjamin Nebgen.”

Philip is passionate about pursuing a career in research addressing micro-scale physics problems using analytic approaches, high performance computing, and AI. He has contributed to diverse research projects through his roles as a professorial assistant at FRIB, a Discovering America researcher with MSU’s Math Department, a student intern at the Theoretical Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and as a Computer Science Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) student at the University of Miami.

“Aaron joined our nuclear theory research group at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University in August 2022 as an undergraduate research assistant. An incoming first-year undergraduate student, he came extremely well prepared to directly work in forefront research and quickly managed to get acquainted with the necessary tools and background knowledge,” Kyle Godbey, a research assistant professor at FRIB, and Witold Nazarewicz, John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor of Physics and chief scientist at FRIB, said.

“During the course of his work, Aaron was able to reach a level of mastery of theoretical and computational methods on par with the current experts in the field. We consider ourselves to be incredibly lucky to have Aaron as a member of our research group and we have no doubt that he will go on to have a successful research career,” Godbey and Nazarewicz said.

“Aaron’s research at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams has been exemplary, and his mentorship activities embody the values of care and support that empower excellence at the MSU Honors College. We congratulate Aaron on being named a Goldwater Scholar,” Long said.

Philip has written two papers and presented at various conferences, including MSU’s Mathematics and Data Science Conferences, the University of Miami’s Computer Science REU Poster Presentation, and a LANL Lab Directed Research and Development Review. He also serves as a student tutor through the Mathematics Learning Center and at East Lansing High School.

“Congratulations to Aaron on this esteemed achievement,” said FRIB Laboratory Director Thomas Glasmacher. “Being named a Goldwater Scholar is a testament to Aaron’s dedication and outstanding efforts. We are so proud he is furthering his research pursuits at FRIB and honored to be part of his journey as he prepares to become a leader in our field.”
