Above all, the favours include money, gifts, company shares, sexual favours, employment , entertainment, and political benefits. Also, personal gain can be – giving preferential treatment and overlooking crime.

Embezzlement refers to the act of withholding assets for the purpose of theft. Furthermore, it takes place by one or more individuals who were entrusted with these assets. Above all, embezzlement is a type of financial fraud.

One important way of preventing Corruption is to give a better salary in a government job. Many government employees receive pretty low salaries. Corruption has expanded in scope, and it now substantially curtails the nation's economic, social, and infrastructure development like never before. There are several causes of corruption and they negatively impact society. We, as conscious citizens, should participate in combatting and addressing the problem of corruption for the betterment of our society.

Corruption is the misuse of power for personal gain. It can take many forms, such as bribery, embezzlement, influence peddling, nepotism, and patronage. Corruption undermines good governance, ethical values, and public trust. It leads to injustices, inefficiencies, and a waste of resources. Corruption in the political and administrative structures of the nation is impeding its development and robbing the people of their fundamental liberties, including the rights to equality, freedom, and equal opportunity as well as to free and obligatory health and education.

Process of Corruption

There are various ways in which corruption can occur—

Bribery | This is when someone in a position of power accepts or solicits a bribe in exchange for a favour.

Embezzlement | This is when someone entrusted with money or property illegally appropriates it for their own use.

Influence Peddling | This is when someone uses their position of power to influence decisions made by others for personal gain.

Nepotism | This is when someone gives favours to family or friends without regard for merit.

Patronage | This is when someone uses their position of power to appoint people to positions or give them benefits based on loyalty rather than capability.

The acceptance of corruption as a frequent occurrence in Indian society explains its high prevalence. Today, there are fewer voices speaking out against corruption than ever before, and the public accepts corruption as normal and inescapable.

A collaboration between two parties is essentially what constitutes corruption, but more often than not, one side may be coerced into the agreement by a second party.

There is no one answer to the question of how to stop corruption. But there are a number of things that can be done to help reduce it.

One way to stop corruption is to increase transparency and accountability. This can be done by requiring public officials to declare their assets and income, and making this information available to the public. Many smugglers black-marketers, hoarders and tax-evaders enjoy political patronage. They are hand and glove with our corrupt politicians.

Our defective economic system also breeds corruption. Faulty economic policies have led to heavy price-rise. It has become very difficult for a fixed income group to live up to certain standard. Embezzlement is another kind of corruption that is quite famous among the high parties. It comes under financial fraud. It refers to the misappropriation of funds placed in a trust. Most often, more than one person is involved in this task and it is done with the sole purpose of theft.

Coming on to the global scale, a graft is a kind of corruption common on the global level. It is very common and unrightful when the position holders take undue advantage of their status. In graft, a political person with power illegally uses his position for the satisfaction of undue personal gains.

Extortion is another major form of corruption. Extortion, like the literal meaning suggests, is the unethical way of obtaining property, money, etc. Next in the queue of types of corruption is favoritism. We have all felt how it feels to be in a biased situation during our school days. On the global level, it can be called nepotism which is quite prevalent in all industries. It happens when a person with fame and recognition favors his own relatives and friends when it comes to job opportunities, money matters, or any favourable outcomes. It is a very unfair practice that really hampers the future of many people who might be better than them but end up losing out on opportunities due to their lack of personal contacts in the industry.

At the same time, taking a bribe should never be accepted as an option. One should always remain true to their work and ensure that no wrongdoing occurs, because once money gets involved, priorities shift and your effectiveness at your position is compromised.

Always Report Corruption: Though we might not ourselves indulge in this malpractice of bribery, we do live like ignorant citizens. If you ever see or know about a case of unreported bribery near you, it becomes a responsibility to report it to the concerned authorities so that corruption can be combated at the most grassroot levels and upwards.

Action Against Corruption: The government should make even more stringent laws for people who take undue advantage of their position and resort to corruption. With consequences, people who indulge in such wrongdoing will think twice before getting into it.

There is a lot that we can do to save our country from this evil of corruption. But before that, we need to break the silence about it. Speak out and set an example of good, moralistic behaviour being the sole way to achieve success in life.

School admission is a major problem especially in the country’s capital, Delhi. Good education is the right of every child but is acquiring education a smooth process for children? Parents struggle to get their children admitted to good schools. Schools demand huge donations to give admission to children. The government is very well aware about the corrupt means adopted by the schools to extract money. However, it does not take any strict action to stop the same.

The scenario is not much different when the students go for university admissions. Children of big businessmen and celebrities get admission easily because of the power of money while those who deserve have actually worked hard for the admission and have to suffer.

Grand Corruption

This kind of corruption takes place at the highest level of government. It mostly involves major resurrection of the legal and political system to benefit those in authority. This type of corruption weakens the very core of a country’s political and economic system. It mainly occurs in dictatorial or authoritarian type of government and is highly damaging for the country.

Systemic Corruption

This type of corruption is quite commonplace. It occurs when there are loopholes and weaknesses in the whole system of an organization or process. People take advantage to further their personal interests in such a scenario and weaken the organizations further. Some of the reasons for this kind of corruption are lack of transparency and lack of uniformity in pay packages and incentives.

Corruption occurs owing to various reasons at different levels. It is important for the government and organizations to identify the root cause of the problem and implement strict norms to stop the same. People who indulge in corrupt means usually escape as corruption is prevalent till the top level and many big names are involved in it.

Many highly educated and talented people are unable to fetch good jobs owing to the lack of good employment opportunities. They often try to bribe those in authority to seek high post.

Low Pay Package

Even though our police officers and other government officials are loaded with work and require handling multiple tasks their salary remains meagre. In order to enhance their lifestyle they often turn to corrupt means.

General Attitude of the People

Although people condemn the corrupt practices of the government officials and political leaders, they themselves bribe at government offices to get their tasks done quickly. There is no unity among people in this case. Everyone wants corruption to end but thinks their small corrupt act will not affect the system. They do not understand that if they stop bribing the government officials, the corruption would automatically end at that level.

Absence of Strict Laws

Since corruption works at various levels and those in the higher authority are involved in the same, no strict action is taken against anyone found guilty. It is the absence of these strict laws that lead to corruption. Government officials who are found taking bribe or are involved in any other corrupt practices are mostly suspended for few weeks or months and then re-posted.

Reservation System

The reservation or the quota system in India is also one of the reasons for the growing corruption. Students who study hard all year round are unable to secure seat in their preferred college while those in the reserved category are able to grab those seats even with low grades. Many parents take the route of back door entry for their children in such a scenario and this adds to corruption.

The government must establish strict laws to punish the corrupt officials and also keep a watchful eye on the general public to bring the problem of corruption to an end.
