This is the Subject Benchmark Statement for Creative Writing. It defines the academic standards that can be expected of a graduate, in terms of what they might know, do and understand at the end of their studies, and describes the nature of the subject. The UK Quality Code for Higher Education (Quality Code) sets out the Expectations and
Subject Benchmark Statements describe the nature of study and the academic standards expected of graduates in specific subject areas. They show what graduates might reasonably be expected to know, do and understand at the end of their studies. Below you will find the full Subject Benchmark Statement for Creative Writing.
Creative Writing is an art and practice, a way of engaging the world and the self, a method of examining language and artistic creation, and a process of acknowledging and analysing different forms of literary creativity. Within this context, the subject is a site of creative and critical knowledge-making.
In 2008 the Higher Education Committee of the National Association of Writers in Education, the national subject association for Creative Writing, produced the first specific Benchmark Statement for Creative Writing teaching and research in universities and colleges in the UK. You'll find a copy of that Benchmark here on the NAWE website.
This resource is designed to introduce lecturers to the Creative Writing Benchmark Statement, and to help them gain a deeper understanding of how the Benchmark works and how it can be applied in practice. It invites individuals or a group to explore for themselves the significance and value of this kind of document. This resource consists of three parts.

Subject Benchmark Statements are published in QAA's capacity as a membership organisation on behalf of the higher education sector. The assessment of Creative Writing courses includes a mix of methods that are accessible to disabled students and students from varying educational and cultural backgrounds.
The undergraduate teaching QAA Subject Benchmark Statement for Creative Writing (2016) states that 'Creative Writing is a diverse and still developing subject. It is underpinned by a growing body of research and pedagogical thinking, but it is also necessarily responsive to the changing world of print publication and other media.' (p.6).
