This book provides a comprehensive overview of the practical process of literature review in healthcare. It contains all details required to conduct a review by students.

This is an excellent clear and concise book on undertaking literature reviews being particularly good at demystifying jargon. It is timely given the move to student dissertations being primarily literature reviews in the current Covid pandemic. However nearly all the examples are drawn from nursing and health making the text less useful for social care and social work. A little disappointing given the title. SW students are likely to gravitate to texts where their subject is more prominent for a primary text.

Accessible, informative, step to step guide

This is a really helpful, accessible text for students and academic staff alike.

A really good addition to the repertoire of skills and techniques for understanding the essential process of literature reviewing.

Purpose While placemaking is a multi-disciplinary concern, it is a key focus within the discipline of spatial planning. This paper aims to explore the development of theoretical trends with regard to placemaking in spatial planning since 1975 to identify current emerging theoretical perspectives. Special attention is given to differences in perspectives between the Global North and the Global South. Design/methodology/approach The study used an integrative literature review (ILR) to analyse placemaking literature over a period of 41 years and five months. The ILR followed the basic review stages: scoping; planning and review protocol; identification/availability; searching; and screening. ILR differs from other reviews as quality appraisal, data gathering, analysis and synthesis rely on coding, thematic content analysis and synthesis. Essential to evidence-based practice, literature reviews facilitate understanding a body of available research (De Los Reyes & Kazdin, 2008). The process of reviewing the literature to support evidence-based intervention services for people with hearing loss continues to evolve (Evans & Kowanko, 2000). Some issues can negatively influence the quality of a literature review, thus affecting whether the review sufficiently supports aural rehabilitation. So as to move beyond the realm of practice based on colleague opinion in order to facilitate the prevailing trend toward evidentiary findings, some problematic issues are briefly delineated.

Impact of Resistance Training on Muscle Strength and Motor Function in children and adolescents with Cerebral Palsy

Background: Cerebral palsy is the most common cause of disability in childhood (CDC, 2020). Although there are various treatment approaches that can be applied, there is a lack of literature focusing on the safety and benefits of resistance training. Therefore, amid the growing need to improve these individual’s quality of life, a research question was formulated relating to this topic area: Does resistance training improve motor function and muscle strength of lower limbs when compared to conventional physical therapy in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy?. The PICO framework was used as follows: (P) Children and adolescents with CP, (I) Resistance training, (C) Conventional Physical therapy without resistance training, (O) Improving motor function and muscle strength. Method: A systematic literature search was performed by using four electronic databases along with a bibliographical search. Limiters, inclusion and exclusion criteria, Boolean operators and synonyms of key terms were implemented to narrow the search according to the research question. In total six studies were chosen and the associated CASP tool was used to critically appraise them. Results: All the studies stated that resistance training does not affect spasticity or cause harm. Most studies reported improvement in muscle strength however less studies reported improvement in motor function. Conclusions: These findings suggest that resistance training can be safely performed by children and adolescents with CP. However, more research must be performed to establish the relationship between resistance training and muscle strength and motor function. Implications and Recommendations: Precautions regarding resistance training and interventions to promote resistance training among children and adolescents with CP should be implemented. More education must be provided to health care professionals to prevent he spreading of misinformation and conflicting advice. The requirement to establish a standardised evidence-based guideline related to resistance training is also discussed.

Writing a literature review in the pre or post-qualification, will be required to undertake a literature review, either as part of a course of study, as a key step in the research process. A literature review can be just a simple summary of the sources, but it usually has an organizational pattern and combines both summary and synthesis. It demands a range of skills, such as learning how to define topics for exploration, acquiring skills of literature searching and retrieval, developing the ability to analyze and synthesize data as well as becoming adept at writing and reporting, often within a limited time scale. The aim of this article is to present a step-by-step approach to writing a literature review research paper to facilitate student and novice reviewers’ understanding.

Influenza, an infectious disease that occurs annually in temperate regions around the world, affects an estimated 5-15% of the world’s population and results in 500, 000 deaths annually (World Health Organization, [WHO], 2009). Since 1981, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have recommended that all healthcare workers (HCW) receive influenza vaccination annually. Despite many health authorities’ recommendations, influenza vaccination rates among HCW are universally low. Numerous vaccination campaigns encouraging HCW to be vaccinated have been met with resistance.
