The game of basketball has truly become global in the last few years. The game is currently popular in the United States. Also, it is described by many as an American game because of the fun and competitive element in it. Also, this is one of the games which is played indoors and still caters to billions of fans around the world. This game was Dr. James Naismith from Canada. Initially, he invented the game by using a rectangular pitch which was 6 feet wide and 4 feet high. Additionally, the court includes a free throw line which is 12 feet long. In basketball essay, students will get to know about the different components that make the game of basketball special.

It is a team game that has gained immense popularity. Also, the game is played with the help of a ball and the ball is shot into the basket that is positioned horizontally. So, the objective in the game is to shoot the ball and score the maximum points. This game is played by 2 teams that constitute a total of 5 players each. Also, the game is played on a marked rectangular floor that has a basket on both the ends. 

Originally, basketball was played using a soccer ball. Also, it was James Naismith that used a peach basket which ha ad a nonhollow bottom. So, this basket was nailed at a height of 10 ft. above the ground and on an elevated track. If you consider the manual removal of the ball from the basket a drawback then the bottom was removed to and it took the shape of modern-day baskets. Also, dribbling was not part of the game initially. Eventually, it evolved till 1950 by which the balls got better shape due to manufacturing. 

Additionally, the orange ball was evolved from the brown ball. The brown ball was used in the beginning as it was thought that the ball is more visible. By 1996, the peach baskets used were replaced by metal hoops on the backboard.

Basketball Game 

At the start of the game, a referee tosses the ball at the center of the court between two players. One player from either team try to get their hands on the ball and the ball is passed on to the teammates. For scoring a point, a team needs to shoot the ball through the basket. If a shot is scored from a distance that is closer to the basket than the 3 point line than it fetches 2 points. Also, if the ball is shot from the distance behind 3 point line, it fetches 3 points. So, the team that has a maximum number of points is declared the winner. 

In case of a draw, there may be additional time allotted to both the teams. In the game, a player is cannot move if he is holding the ball. The player needs to dribble, otherwise, it is considered as a foul. Likewise, when there is a physical contact that affects the other team then it counted as a physical foul. 

Basketball is game played with a maintained and carefully marked court. It is a team sport that is commonly found in many different areas.

Basketball Court – My Second Home

The basketball court holds a special place in my heart and I deeply appreciate its presence. It has become like a second home to me, a sanctuary where I can let go of stress and simply enjoy the game. Regardless of whether it’s indoors or outdoors, the court symbolizes the essence of basketball and the dreams associated with it. I am grateful to be a basketball player as it has played a significant role in shaping my life. Observing me, you might assume that I have been playing basketball for a long time and that it consumed my childhood. Interestingly, I actually began my journey as a ballerina, dancing from 2004 to 2007 at Rhythm Technique in Greenville. It wasn’t until I was around seven years old that I started playing basketball. My uncle, Big Trayal, was a basketball player for his high school and AAU during the summer. I used to attend all his games and watch him perform. During his AAU games, I would stand beside the bleachers, dribbling a basketball and shooting with both hands, while the team was in a huddle discussing their first-half performance and strategies for the second half. Then, I would reluctantly return to the bleachers, sitting between my grandma and grandpa, after being asked to leave the court and resume warming up for the second half. This experience inspired me to write an essay about my basketball court, where I explore its significance and how it has shaped my identity.

I grew up spending most of my time outdoors, playing with my siblings and cousins from sunrise to sunset. We engaged in various activities, such as tag, swimming, kickball, and basketball, all involving running and teamwork. Basketball was our favorite, and we played it the most, until someone got upset or injured. At my great grandmother’s house, we had a small patch of red dirt, about the size of a front porch, surrounded by grass. An 8-foot piece of wood was embedded in the ground, serving as the backboard. The wood was spray-painted in a gingerbread brown color, while the backboard was a faded off-white, barely holding on due to the constant pounding of the basketball on the red dirt. That was our very own “basketball court.” We would compete to be the “captain” by making shots from behind the red dirt, allowing us to choose our teammates and have the first possession of the ball. Our grandparents would always warn us, “Don’t go out there in that red dirt!” Nevertheless, we would find a way around it, shooting the ball from the grass or pretending to cross people up from one end of the yard to the other, as if we were still on a proper court.

In fourth grade, I joined the Upward Stars basketball team at Brushy Creek Baptist Church. It was essentially a church league where we played against teams of the same age and gender every Saturday.

As part of a group, I was familiar with the game and may have even believed I was as skilled as Maya Moore at the time. However, comparing myself to now, my game has undergone significant changes. After each game, our team would earn a star to iron onto our shirts, which we received at the beginning of the season. The star we received depended on our actions, attitudes, and words on game day. Each star had a different color and represented something special. The colors included white, blue, gold, gray, and red. Each star symbolized a different action: effort, sportsmanship, offense, defense, or Christlikeness. This was when I truly began to realize my potential mentally, athletically, spiritually, and socially.

In fifth grade, I played basketball for a church team consisting entirely of boys. We practiced at Evangelistic Temple (ET) Baptist Church every Wednesday and played against different church teams every Saturday. Playing with boys and being the only girl on the team molded me into the basketball player I am today. I was exposed to a completely different style of basketball that greatly improved my skills and made me a better player. It made me more aggressive, faster, and more advanced than girls my age typically were. It also allowed me to acquire valuable skills that I may not have learned if I had only played against girls.

After the championship game, while playing church ball for ET, a middle-aged man named Rick Boone approached me, introduced himself, and asked if I played AAU for any team. At that time, I didn’t, so I responded with a “No.” He was impressed by the fact that I, as a girl, not only played on an all-boys team but also showed great potential at such a young age. He invited me to play for his AAU team, Upper Level Pride. Initially, I was hesitant, but my grandmother encouraged me to give it a try. From sixth to eleventh grade, I played AAU basketball for Rick Boone every summer. We practiced on Mondays and Wednesdays to prepare for upcoming tournaments. These tournaments took place both locally and out of town, including states such as South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The out-of-town tournaments were often opportunities to showcase our skills in front of college coaches and potentially earn scholarships. Playing against teams from different regions and countries improved my skills as both a team player and an individual.

In seventh and eighth grade, I also played middle school basketball for League Academy. It was a bit intimidating to play organized basketball for the first time. In seventh grade, I earned a starting position due to my hard work in practice, and although we lost in the second round of the playoffs, I believe our team was stronger overall in seventh grade than in eighth grade. Our team was smaller, consisting mostly of guards with no post players. That’s why it was surprising when we reached the championship and won it. Additionally, we didn’t lose a single game that season, resulting in an overall record of 15-0.

Now, I have transitioned from middle school to high school basketball. The game has a different speed and is more intense on the court. I am playing alongside freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. After tryouts in my freshman year, the head coach, Coach Burrow, and the two assistant coaches individually spoke to each player in his office, asking for their thoughts on the team.

During tryouts, they had to prove their skills to make the team. If they succeeded, they would be assigned to either the JV or Varsity team. Trying out as a freshman with almost 60 other girls was nerve-wracking enough, but entering the coach’s office was even more intimidating. As I sat down on the couch, the coach asked me how I thought I did during tryouts. Nervously, I responded that I thought I did well. He then informed me that I had made the team and asked if I wanted to play JV or Varsity. I chose Varsity because I wanted to get more playing time, and he agreed, stating that I definitely wouldn’t be playing JV. I knew he had high expectations, but he was somewhat lenient since I was a freshman. Playing for Wade Hampton High School, I achieved many accomplishments. In my freshman year, I earned a starting position in the third game of the season, taking the spot of a sophomore player.

In my senior year, I received the honor of being named an all-region player. I also received the accolades of being an all-state player, winning the upper state championship twice, and being the state runner-up champion twice in consecutive years. I became known for my basketball skills at Wade Hampton. My performance on the court even caught the attention of college scouts. I regret not pursuing basketball at the college level. The realization hits me every day, especially when I look at pictures from high school where I played for the Generals.

Putting myself on the basketball court has not only improved me as an individual but also allowed me to express myself through the game. It has opened up numerous opportunities and introduced me to friends who have become like family, something I never expected. Playing basketball is incredibly addictive, whether it’s for fun or in a competitive setting. I wish I hadn’t ended my basketball journey in high school and had continued playing in college. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t reminisce about it. Basketball is my passion, and the love I have for it will never fade.

L.S.U.’s Kim Mulkey Courts Controversy With Style

Inside the coach’s winning fashion playbook.

The smog of a Washington Post exposé may have been hanging over Kim Mulkey’s head during the L.S.U. game on Saturday afternoon, but the highest paid coach in women’s collegiate basketball wasn’t going to hide. How could you tell?

Well, in part because at the start of the N.C.A.A. tournament, she had given a news conference threatening a lawsuit about the article, thus calling to attention to it. In part because there she was, running up and down the sidelines and screaming her head off. And it part because … goodness, what was she wearing?

A gleaming pantsuit covered in a jumble of Op Art sequined squiggles, as if Big Bird had met Liberace and they’d teamed up for “Project Runway.”

Even in the context of basketball, a sport in which players and coaches understood the power of personal branding through clothes long before almost any other athletes, Ms. Mulkey stands out. More than perhaps anyone else in the league — possibly in all of women’s basketball — she has made her image a talking point, a reflection of her own larger-than-life personality and a tool to draw attention to her sport. She is basketball’s avatar of the Trumpian era, offering a new version of The Mulkey Show at every game and costuming herself for the moment. As her team meets the University of Iowa again in the Elite Eight, brand Mulkey will most likely be raising the stakes once more.

It would be wrong to call her clothes “fashion.” They have little to do with trends or silhouette. But love what she wears or hate it, love how she behaves or hate it, her sometimes ridiculous, always eye-catching outfits are, like her winning record, abrasive personality and problematic comments , impossible to ignore.

“She’s the OG example of how to capitalize on who you are,” said Sydney Bordonaro, a stylist who works with seven W.N.B.A. players and was herself a Division I basketball player. “How many eyes are on her during each game? How could you not take advantage of that opportunity? It’s priceless.”

As such, and as the women’s game becomes increasingly popular and new N.I.L. rules put a premium on the monetization of image and identity, Ms. Mulkey is fast becoming the author of a different kind of playbook. One that has made her a lightning rod not just because of her coaching style, but because of her style as a coach.

“She has built herself into a brand,” said Mitchell S. Jackson, the author of “Fly: The Big Book of Basketball Fashion.” “It’s about ratings and about personality.”

A Brief History of Basketball Coach Fashion

It was the Lakers coach Pat Riley who set the tone for sideline fashion back in the 1980s when he adopted a wardrobe of Armani suits, using clothes to convey his ambition and polish. “He became the standard-bearer,” Mr. Jackson said. “But he also blended in.”

Pat Summitt, who spent 38 years as the women’s basketball coach at the University of Tennessee, took a similar approach, becoming known for her shoulder pads and power suits. As Lindsay Gibbs, the founder of the newsletter Power Plays, pointed out, female coaches had long understood that “they were being scrutinized to a different level” and that what they wore was going to play a role whether they liked it or not.

Yet overall, it has been the men who have garnered much of the attention — perhaps because they also had the paychecks and the discretionary income. And perhaps because the W.N.B.A. has a long and fraught history with gender stereotyping, which for years saw the organization pushing classically “feminine” ideals, including offering hourlong makeup and hair tutorials for rookies to combat traditionalist nervousness about powerful female athletes and all they represent.

In recent years, and especially in the men’s game, the coaches have ceded the spotlight to the players, opting to dress in team apparel rather than designer clothes, even as their on-court stars have ended up on the front row of fashion shows. Ms. Mulkey is an alternative to all that.

And though she is not the only style-forward coach in the game — Dawn Staley of South Carolina , Adia Barnes of the University of Arizona, and Sydney Carter, the director of player development for the University of Texas are lauded for their image-making flair — Ms. Mulkey is the most extreme. She has been compared to a Who from Dr. Seuss’s Whoville , Ric Flair of WrestleMania and a flamingo . (Well, she has been called a “rare bird.”)

Whether you consider her looks merely “eccentric,” as Ms. Bordonaro does, or straight from “the Las Vegas clown section,” as Tom Broecker, the costume designer of “Saturday Night Live,” does, it may matter less than the fact that you consider them at all.

“She’s making a statement about her individuality and determination to be herself, no matter what,” Ms. Gibbs of Power Plays said. “It has become something people look out for, and she’s leaning in.”

Sparkle, Sparkle, Sparkle

Ms. Mulkey’s penchant for outré dress began to emerge during her 21 years at Baylor, in which she led her team to three national championships. During that time, she also courted controversy with comments dismissing the university’s sexual misconduct scandal and her treatment of her star player, Brittney Griner, who has talked publicly about being told to stay in the closet by her coach and to cover her tattoos. (Later, Ms. Mulkey did not speak up when Ms. Griner was imprisoned in Russia in 2022.) Still, her style was a lot more “normal, for want of a better word,” Ms. Gibbs said.

It was during L.S.U.’s run to the N.C.A.A. trophy last year that Ms. Mulkey vaulted from basketball fame to national fame, thanks in part to her penchant for sequins, feathers and lurid color combinations. She wore a black and white sequined polka-dot pantsuit, a Kelly green and hot pink plaid jacket with pink feathers on the sleeves, a rose-pink jacket with enormous … well, roses, on the sleeves and, for the final game, an allover sequined tiger-stripe pantsuit. (The tiger is the L.S.U. mascot.) Riding in the celebration parade afterward, she chose a purple sequined jacket with more tigers.

It is not a coincidence that one of Ms. Mulkey’s favorite labels is called Queen of Sparkles . Designed by Jaime Glas, it is sold at the Baton Rouge store Rodéo Boutique, where Ms Mulkey reportedly gets many of her outfits — or where Jennifer Roberts, the L.S.U. director of women’s basketball player personnel and influence, gets them for her. At this point, according to a 2023 article on her closet in the Louisiana daily The Advocate , she has 171 pairs of shoes and “29 glittery jackets.”

“Look, we’re from Louisiana,” Ms. Mulkey said , by way of explaining her taste. “We like sparkles, we like diamonds, we like Mardi Gras, we like to eat and we like to party.”

Whatever the reason, her choices have meant that even people with no particular interest in basketball (like the FUG girls ) have suddenly begun watching the games. “People tune in to see what she’s wearing,” Mr. Jackson said.

And Ms. Mulkey understands the stakes. When she gave that news conference about the Washington Post article at the start of the N.C.A.A. tournament, she left the sequins behind for the institutional security of a simple long-sleeve purple L.S.U. T-shirt. As if to remind everyone what a team player she really is.

NCAA says 3-point line drawn 9 inches short at apex for Portland women’s regional by court supplier

The NCAA said Monday one of the 3-point lines on the court used for the women’s basketball regionals in Portland, Oregon, was about 9 inches short of regulation at its apex, a mistake by the contractor that makes the courts used throughout March Madness .

The line on the court at Moda Center was corrected, the NCAA said, ahead of Monday night’s UConn-USC game to determine the final spot in next weekend’s Final Four. But not before five games had been played on it, the first four with the mistake unnoticed.

“What happened with the court in Portland is inexcusable and unfair to every team that played on it,” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer, whose team lost in Portland, said in a statement to The Associated Press. “When you arrive at a gym, especially in the NCAA Tournament, at the very least you expect the baskets to be 10 feet and the floor markings to be correct. For an error of that magnitude to overshadow what has been an incredible two weekends of basketball featuring sensational teams and incredible individual performances is unacceptable and extremely upsetting.”

The NCAA uses Connor Sports to supply and install the courts. The NCAA said the marking used to draw the line at the top of the arc in the center of the court was too short. It did not identify the contractor that made the mistake.

“For all NCAA courts, a small hole is punched in the floor at each end of the court that indicates ‘center-of-basket’ during the finishing process. A calibrated vinyl-tape device is then placed in the hole, which lays the 2-inch game line to be painted,” Lynn Holzman, NCAA vice president for women’s basketball, said in an email to members.

After reviewing the Portland court, it was found that the center hole was punched about 9 inches short of where it needed to be at the apex of the 3-point arc.

“Connor Sports and the NCAA found the inaccurate line was the result of human error by the finisher contracted by Connor Sports,” Holzman said. “The review also found the sides of the 3-point line were accurately painted, as were all other court markings.”

The discrepancy in distance was discovered Sunday before Texas and North Carolina State played their Elite Eight game. Four games already had been been played over two days with the mismatched 3-point lines.

Coaches for Texas and N.C. State agreed to play as scheduled with one line shorter than the other rather than delay the start. N.C. State beat Texas 76-66 to advance to the Final Four.

The NCAA 3-point line is 22 feet, 1 3/4 inches at the top of the arc for both women and men.

“We apologize for this error and the length of time for which it went unnoticed,” Holzman said. “Simply put, this court did not meet our expectations, and the NCAA should have caught the error sooner.

“We will work with all of the NCAA’s suppliers and vendors to establish additional quality control measures to ensure this does not happen in future tournaments.”

This women’s NCAA Tournament has broken records for television viewership, driven by the popularity of Iowa All-American Caitlin Clark, other stars such as LSU’s Angel Reese, UConn’s Paige Bueckers and USC’s JuJu Watkins, and the dominance of undefeated South Carolina.

But the games at times have been overshadowed by controversies and off-the-court issues. The NCAA had to replace one official at halftime when it was discovered she had a degree from one of the schools whose game she was officiating, and Notre Dame star Hanna Hidalgo missed a chunk of the Fighting Irish’s Sweet 16 game against Oregon State when officials made her remove a nose ring, which she had played with earlier in the tournament.

Away from the court, Utah players and coaches reported being racially harassed near the Idaho hotel where the team stayed while playing first- and second-round games in Spokane, Washington, about 40 minutes away.

The misdrawn 3-point line capped a rocky eight days for the NCAA, which has been working to address inequities between how it administers the men’s and women’s tournaments since issues were pointed out during the 2021 single-site events in Indianapolis and San Antonio, respectively.

The problem at Moda Center, home to the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers, was another embarrassing mishap.

Teams switch baskets that they shoot at at halftime, so for each game, each team played one half shooting from the short 3-point arc.

According to the NCAA’s statistics, teams shooting from the 3-point line in Portland that was 9 inches short at the top over five games were 23 for 89 (25.8%). Teams shooting on the accurate line were 29 for 87 (33.3%).

“I think we shot the ball better on the other end both games, because that’s the normal line,” N.C. State coach Wes Moore said. “But I’m not going to blame it on that. I mean, these kids, like I said, they shoot so far behind it sometimes nowadays, who knows where the line is?”

The Wolfpack were 11 for 19 shooting 3s from the correctly measured line in two games and 5 for 16 with the incorrect line.

“You know, it is an unusual situation,” Moore said. “But, like I said, I don’t know that it was an advantage or disadvantage, either way. We both played a half on each end.”

Baylor, Gonzaga and Duke also played in Portland this past weekend.

In its Sweet 16 game against USC, Baylor went 3 for 12 on 3s from the wrongly marked side (missing seven in a row in one stretch), compared with 6 for 14 on 3s from the correctly marked side. USC won by four.

Connor Sports is a hardwood sports flooring company that provides more than a dozen NBA and WNBA teams floors for their practice venues and game arenas, according to the company’s website.

“We apologize for the error that was found and have technicians on site at the Moda Center in Portland who were instructed to make the necessary corrections immediately following (Sunday’s) game,” the company said in a statement.

At arenas that host multiple types of basketball events, multiple courts are often used. For example, at Madison Square Garden in New York, there is a court used for Knicks games, and when the Big East Tournament is played there, the conference brings a court. That court comes pre-marked with logos, signage and lines drawn to college basketball dimensions.

The main difference between an NBA court and a college court is the distance between the 3-point line and the basket. The NBA line is a foot farther at its longest point.

The Army veteran husband of conjoined twin Abby Hensel has been hit with a paternity suit filed by another woman since they married, The Post has learned.

The bombshell lawsuit was filed in October 2023, almost two years after medic Joshua Bowling, 34, and Hensel — who documented her life sharing a body with sister Brittany Hensel in a TLC reality series — secretly wed in November 2021 .

The paternity case was filed by Bowling’s ex-wife, Annica Bowling, 33, against Joshua and another respondent, Gavin Vatnsdal, in a Minnesota court.

Court records show a “genetic test report” was entered onto the file just weeks ago — on March 7, 2024, but the details and results are not publicly available.

Annica and Joshua, who married in 2010, have one daughter together, eight-year-old Isabella, who they share joint custody of, according to court documents obtained by The Post.

Those documents state she is their only “joint” child born during the marriage.

The couple split in April 2019 and Annica had another daughter, who was born in late 2020 and is now three.

It appears possible this is the child whose paternity is now being contested, but available court documents do not make that clear as she is a minor.

Neither Annica, Joshua, Vatnsdal or the Hensel twins responded to The Post’s requests for comment.

In Annica and Joshua’s 2022 divorce papers, the younger daughter is referred to as “Isabella’s half-sister.”

Joshua and the conjoined twins have a close relationship with Isabella, who was a guest at the wedding and appears in many photos on social media with both sides of her family.

Several pictures show Abby, now her stepmother, and Brittany laughing with the little girl and hugging her.

Following the revelation of the secret marriage last week Abby and Brittany wrote Friday on TikTok: “The internet is extra LOUD today,” alongside a clip  featuring photos of them as the song “Real Love Baby” by Father John Misty played. 

“We have always been around ❤️#abbyandbrittanyhensel #happy #love #lovestory #marriage.”

In a second video , titled “#forever,” the pair could be seen embracing Bowling in a photo as a voiceover said, “This is for all you haters out there. If you don’t like what I do but watch everything I’m doing — you’re still a fan.”

The Hensel sisters, born and raised in Minnesota, originally appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 1996, to discuss their experiences as dicephalus conjoined twins.

In 2012, they shared their lives in an eight-part TLC reality series, “Abby & Brittany”.

“People have been curious about us since we were born, for obvious reasons,” the twins said in the first episode. 

“But our parents never let us use that as an excuse. We were raised to believe we could do anything we wanted to do.”

The twins said in a documentary made when they were teenagers they planned on becoming mothers later in life,  according to the Telegraph .

“Yeah, we are going to be mums one day, but we don’t want to talk about how it’s going to work yet,” Abby said at the time.

They were born with the rare condition which involves two heads on a single body with one genital system; two, three or four arms, two hearts and two legs.

The twins share a bloodstream and all organs below the waist.

Abby controls their right arm and leg and Brittany controls the left side.

Abby and Brittany’s parents, Patty and Mike Hensel, opted out of separation surgery because doctors said there was little chance the girls would survive the operation, “Today” reported.

“How could you pick between the two?” their father Mike said, during a 2001 interview with  Time magazine .

When lawyers lose their licenses to practice law, it’s typically because they mistreated their clients. Perhaps they improperly spent the client’s money to pay off personal bills, rather than to hire investigators or experts, or otherwise work on the case. Maybe they regularly failed to meet deadlines for filing court papers, or just weren’t sufficiently zealous in representing their clients’ interests.

The State Bar of California’s case against attorney and legal scholar John C. Eastman was quite different.

Eastman was zealous, and then some, in crafting legal arguments and strategies that attempted to justify the disproven claims of his client — Donald Trump — that he was cheated out of reelection in 2020, and that Vice President Mike Pence had superpowers to accept or reject state election results involving Trump’s candidacy, and his own.

Only rarely do licensing authorities discipline lawyers for going overboard on their clients’ behalf, and for good reason. Lawyers should have leeway to try a range of arguments and legal theories, and should not be sanctioned for being novel or even audacious in advocating for their clients. They should not be punished for arguing theories not currently in vogue. They are protected by the 1st Amendment.

A lawyer’s duty, crucially, extends beyond the client. Attorneys are officers of the court, and key figures in a system whose purpose is to determine the truth, apply the law and achieve justice. California lawyers take an oath to support the Constitution and to conduct themselves with integrity.

A State Bar Court judge on Wednesday ruled — appropriately and wisely — that in providing legal cover for Trump’s dishonest bid to subvert the 2020 election, Eastman violated his oath, undermined the quest for truth and justice, and inflicted serious and perhaps lasting damage on the very institutions of democracy and law that are the foundation of his profession.

John Eastman, the former Trump lawyer who helped foment the plan to invalidate the 2020 election results, left the Chapman University law faculty last year. But his legacy still sparks campus questions.

Notwithstanding Eastman’s reputation as a legal scholar and former dean of Chapman Law School in Orange — and as a 2010 candidate for California attorney general — Judge Yvette Roland recommended that he be permanently disbarred.

The final decision is up to the state Supreme Court.

It would best serve California, the legal profession and election integrity for the court to follow Roland’s recommendation. Eastman’s conduct was egregious. As Trump was selling his election fraud fairy tale to the public, and after states’ election officials certified slates of electors, state and federal courts rejected suits to overturn the certifications and state legislatures rejected challenges, Eastman wrote two memos mapping out plans for Pence to ignore all of those actions on Jan. 6, 2021.

In the words of the State Bar’s trial counsel, Eastman demonstrated that he knew his role as Trump’s lawyer “was not to provide good faith advocacy, but to fabricate an illusion of legality to an illegal effort to delay the formal recognition of Trump’s obvious defeat by any means possible.”

He used his law license to provide cover for an illegal scheme. He counseled Pence to break the law. He made, or stood behind, statements that he almost certainly knew to be false, such as an argument by Texas officials in its lawsuit to undermine the election that the probability of Biden actually winning in four states — given Trump’s lead in early election night counting — were “less than one in a quadrillion to the fourth power.” His legal arguments were specious.

Special counsel Jack Smith has the right to ask the Supreme Court to expedite the former president’s case. Time is of the essence because Trump could be the GOP’s 2024 presidential nominee.

Roland cited the example of Donald Segretti , a California lawyer who became infamous during the Watergate scandal amid President Nixon’s 1972 reelection campaign. Segretti’s misconduct was child’s play in comparison to Eastman’s. He faked letters to stir chaos among Democratic candidates. His dirty tricks had nothing to do with his being a lawyer, yet he was suspended from law practice for two years for failing to uphold the ethical standards of the legal profession.

Eastman’s actions were infinitely worse and require much tougher sanctions. He didn’t merely lie in an attempt to change voters’ minds. He actively tried to disenfranchise voters who had already cast their ballots, in what Roland called “an egregious and unprecedented attack on our democracy.”

Did Trump commit a crime when he relied on Eastman’s legal arguments to subvert the 2020 presidential election? Did Eastman ? That question may ultimately come before a Georgia jury. The question currently before the California Supreme Court is whether, given all of the former president’s misconduct, his lawyer is fit to remain an officer of the court in this state.

The answer should be obvious.
