Preparation

Once again the organisation which promotes Australia, Tourism Australia, is advertising the best job in the world. But this year, they have six jobs going, all for six months, with a great salary and extra spending money. If you think one of these is your dream job, you have to make a 30-second video explaining why you are the best person for the role. But – be warned. Thousands of people will be competing for each post.

The job of 'outback adventurer' is for someone with a passion for outdoor life, and in the Northern Territory there are plenty of wide-open spaces. The job is for someone to find out the best adventures and jobs for young people on working holidays. You’d be getting close to wildlife, sleeping under the stars in a bush camp and flying over stunningly beautiful landscape in a hot air balloon. Your duties will include getting to know about aboriginal culture and eating traditional bushfoods, maybe including the famous witchetty grubs – insect larva.

Like the idea of 200 days of sunshine every year? Job number two is a park ranger in tropical Queensland. It’s a wonderful state with ancient rainforests, the world’s largest sand island and the awesome Great Barrier Reef. Here your duties would include protecting and promoting native plants and animals, spectacular waterfalls, dinosaur fossils, untouched beaches and indigenous culture. You’d get paid to patrol the beaches of Lizard Island and live a life most people can only dream about.

Another island job is as 'wildlife caretaker' on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. If you love all kinds of animals, this is the job for you. The advert says you’ll be able to talk to wallabies (a kind of small kangaroo), play with dolphins, cuddle koalas and sunbathe with seals on the unspoilt beach at Seal Bay. You would get about the island on foot, by bicycle, kayak or boat, taking photos and leaving only footprints. There is one potential drawback, though. You’d need to be pretty brave since you might come face to face with great white sharks.

Maybe you are not quite so keen on the great outdoors and your talents are more journalistic. If you fancy feature writing, photography and making videos, you can apply for the position of lifestyle photojournalist for Time Out in Melbourne. You would be required to photograph and write about the city's coolest cafés and musical events. But you’d also cover tourist activities in the whole state of Victoria, including surfing on the Great Ocean Road, skiing at Mount Hotham or watching the little penguins at Phillip Island.

Are you a foodie? Do you know about food, as well as love eating it? If the answer's yes, you can apply for the role of 'taste master' in Western Australia. Your job would be to promote the best restaurants, pubs, wineries and breweries. You’d also catch fresh seafood off the beautiful coast and learn all about making wine and beer.

Finally, a fantastic job in Sydney. We’ve all seen those amazing firework displays in Sydney Harbour. Well, you could be one of the people making that happen next year. New South Wales is looking for a 'chief funster', who would be based in Sydney while travelling around the state and tweeting about the coolest things going on. This job would appeal to someone interested in everything: sports, the arts, entertainment, food. You’d also be involved in making the Sydney Festival, Mardi Gras and Vivid Festival as spectacular, and as fun, as possible.

What do the best jobs in the world mean to you? 

Do they mean having a high paycheck? Or do they have to offer room for skill development and fulfilment to take you further in life? 

There’s no denying that we have different criteria and opinions when it comes to landing a jobdisc we deem the best in the world. 

But it’s safe to say that the definition of the “ best jobs in the world ” is no longer within the confines of a hefty paycheck. 

These best jobs in the world typically share some common attributes, especially since we now live in a world where a harmonious work-life balance, opportunities for self-growth, and a positive impact on people and the planet are now important job factors for many of us. 

However, that doesn’t mean we seek low-paying jobs — rather we seek jobs that pay well, provide security, and make us feel proud of our work. 

A 2020 study has shown that 84% of those working would take a new job if it came with new opportunities and benefits, such as work-life balance, fulfilment, and a better paycheck. 

Job seekers are changing their demands and behaviours. The good news? So is the job market.

Best paying jobs in the world: How it all began

The history of jobs and professional occupations is deeply intertwined with the evolution of mankind. 

The concept of work has undergone significant shifts over the millennia, shaped by cultural, technological and economic developments. 

But how did the concept of jobs begin, you wonder? 

In the earliest civilisation, people engaged in hunting, gathering, and simple agricultural activities for survival. 

While these roles weren’t exactly jobs, but survival skills, there was a division of labour, which was often based on age and gender, with different roles for men and women. 

Then came the innovation of agriculture, which shifted the nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyles to agricultural communities. 

With the domestication of plants and animals, people began to specialise in farming, herding and fishing. This specialisation marked a pivotal moment in human history, slowly paving the way to actual jobs. 

Eventually, it expanded to specialised skills (think craftsmanship, artisans, trading) and not long later, specialised knowledge (law, medicine, accounting). 

Finally, in the 20th century, we witnessed the professionalisation of various occupations. 

Licensing and accreditation became common in fields like medicine, law, engineering, and accounting. Professional associations were established to set ethical standards, ensure competence, and regulate entry into these fields. 

In other words, 9-to-5 jobs became the norm. 

And just when you think the job market couldn’t change any further, we have the 21st century fixing every mistake the 20th-century job market couldn’t — we have remote working, flexible hours and overall, a workplace where creating and delivering value takes precedence over time spent on the job. 

Does that mean that hard, manual labour in the 21st century has finally come to an end? 

While the job market for the best paying jobs has significantly changed, 3D jobs still very much exist, and will continue to do so.

3D jobs: The opposite of the best jobs in the world

3D jobs refer to dirty, dangerous, and demeaning jobs, commonly found in agriculture, manufacturing, construction, and cleaning sectors. 

It’s essential to acknowledge the flip side of the best jobs — the occupations that epitomise hardship and challenges. 

3D jobs are essentially jobs that no one, especially the younger generation, wants to take up, which is becoming an increasing concern for many countries. 

In Malaysia, for example, the government has expressed its concern about Malaysian youths’ hesitance in picking up 3D jobs not because of the salary, but the nature of the jobs, which they find demeaning and “low class.” 

Even when there were almost 700,000 Malaysians out of jobs in 2022, many still refused to take up 3D jobs, and companies end up hiring workers from abroad instead.

In more developed (or even less developed) countries, however, you would see locals doing these 3D jobs. In most cases, they are more than happy to do them. 

Some are even paid three to six times more than what 3D workers get in Malaysia. 

Besides that, the citizens in these countries possess no social stigma surrounding jobs in the 3D sector, despite the possibility of these jobs being physically and mentally demanding. 

All in all, the hesitancy towards 3D jobs among the younger generations reflects a complex interplay of changing values, safety considerations, technological advancements and evolving career expectations.

But it’s important to remember that all jobs can be equally fulfilling, especially now that there’s more emphasis on taking and creating jobs that offer good pay, a healthy workplace culture, opportunities to grow, job security and good values. 

Best jobs in the world: From high-demand fields to specialised expertise

1. environmental engineer.

With a climate crisis and many other environmental challenges looming, environmental engineers  are now indispensable.

Beyond the high earning potential, you will engage in continuous learning, contributing to sustainable solutions for the planet. 

Your fieldwork and office responsibilities provide a well-rounded professional life. 

Valeria from Arizona State University finds studying environmental engineering especially meaningful because she is passionate about helping communities that don’t have access to proper sustainable and efficient solutions to managing the environment.

“For me, being an environmental engineer means putting hard work into helping the communities around us to enjoy better living conditions and making sure the next generations have all the resources they need. It is the perfect combination of science and social work,” she said, as quoted by Kaplan Pathways .

“I want to help people gain access to drinking water and I want to help cities in developing countries become more efficient when it comes to waste, resource management, and urban planning. I also want people to be more aware of the way that they are living their lives and what they could do to reduce their impact on the environment.”

Aside from a good paycheck, being a public health professional allows you to bring good to the community — you will address global health challenges, which often require continuous learning as you work on the improvement of the well-being of communities worldwide. 

The job also consists of varied roles, from research to policy-making to implementation, allowing for a diverse work environment. 

In other words, it’s truly one of the most rewarding jobs out there.

Megan Hervy, who previously studied Master of Public Health at the Colorado School of Public Health , now works with the Harm Reduction Action Centre.

She is responsible for collaborating with syringe exchange patients, providing information about the centre’s programmes, and working with the staff to enhance the effectiveness of outreach efforts.

“It [public health] is such an expansive and interdisciplinary field that connects to every facet of our life on multiple levels, including through community-level and larger population-level lenses,” said Hervy.

3. Human resources manager

Unlike the ones mentioned above, being a human resources manager means you’ll be geared towards the corporate field, where you’ll oversee talent management strategies. 

You’ll navigate diverse human resource challenges that contribute to the continuous professional development of your employees, fostering a positive workplace environment, and balancing employee relations and recruitment. 

In other words, you are the life of the company. 

Mmamanti Umoh, one of the young emerging leaders in Nigeria, once said, “Without the right succession planning put to play in human resources, we build for the future without a future.” 

Alumnus George Moschos who studied MSc Human Resource Management at the University of Portsmouth shares the same value. 

He said, “My passion is change, towards excellence and best practice. We naturally fall into complacent idleness, but through change, we evolve. This is why I like human resources as an area of work, since it puts me out there in the front, supporting and implementing change.”

Beyond financial remuneration and shaping young bright minds, your role involves conducting research and publishing papers that could bring a significant impact to not just society, but the world. 

To truly enjoy your role, however, you must possess a love for research and teaching.

Many lecturers have shared that the journey to become an educator, albeit tough, is more than worth it. 

Professor Rebekka Sandmeier, director of the South African College of Music , shared: “Think very well before entering the university system. It is brilliant in that it gives you a lot of freedom. You can choose your topic to research and, to a certain extent, the courses you teach and the structuring of your time. And you’re in an intellectually challenging environment. 

“On the other hand, you need to be an expert in self-motivation and time management.”

5. Data scientist

In the era of big data (it’s only becoming bigger!), data scientists play a crucial role in influencing decision-making across various industries. 

With the ability to extract meaningful insights and knowledge from large sets of structured and unstructured data, you will possess a blend of analytical, statistical, and programming skills that will make you highly valuable in research and making strategic business decisions. 

TY Shao, who is studying Master of Data Science at the University of California, wants to use her passion for data science to make a difference in the healthcare community after her father passed away from kidney cancer. 

“I intend to use the tools of data science to help expedite life-saving diagnoses to cancer patients and improve overall patient care. I am interested in working on cancer research throughout my career as a data scientist so that I can help other families who are also afflicted by this disease.”

Although impactful and rewarding, like every other job, data science comes with its share of challenges, such as technical complexity, data quality, and limited resources. 

It is a field which requires a great deal of continuous learning, resilience and determination.

6. Psychologist

Psychologists often work directly with people to address and alleviate mental and emotional challenges. 

You have the opportunity to make a positive impact on lives, helping them navigate and overcome difficulties.

If you like helping people, nothing can beat the feeling to helping people get through some of their darkest days.

While many people might think that a career in psychology is stagnant, that’s not true — it involves a lot of self-reflection and personal growth. 

As you’re always communicating and always dealing with second-hand trauma, you’ll develop strong interpersonal skills, empathy and resilience that can positively impact your personal lives as well. 

You also play a key role in advocating for mental health awareness and contributing to social change, potentially conducting groundbreaking research into new mental disorders and influencing policies and practices that promote wellbeing.

A busy job doesn’t always leave time for the good things in life. Long hours at the office and a near-permanent state of connectedness means family and fun are often pushed down our list of priorities. We’re all in search of the elusive “work-life balance”, so which career paths offer us the best chance of achieving it?

Job search and salary comparison website Glassdoor.com has released its list of the 25 jobs that have the best work-life balance, and some of the answers are surprising. The list rates work-life balance out of five (five being the best). It also provides information on the average salary offered for each position, as well as the number of job openings currently on the website.

Ten of the top 25 jobs with the best work-life balance are in the technology sector. One job that stands out is that of substitute teacher, which ranked lowest in terms of salary but fifth in terms of work-life balance, thanks to the flexibility it allows.

Also of note is a gradual downward trend in the perception of work-life balance. The data from a similar study conducted in 2009 gave an average score of 3.5 while the 2012 study averaged 3.4. This year’s study reached a new low at 3.2, which means that workers are struggling more than ever to keep their work from infringing upon their personal lives.

The Best Job in the World

When my children were young we sometimes played a game at the Thanksgiving table: each diner wrote on a slip of paper something for which she or he was grateful, folded it and placed it in a basket. We then passed the basket and took turns picking one, reading it out loud and guessing who wrote it. I often wrote: "I am grateful to have meaningful work" and when it came time to explain I would say that I felt very lucky to work at CGD and to have what was for me the very best job in the world. (Guessing right wasn't as easy as you imagine. I didn't write the same thing every year, and some years my wife, who worked for an affordable housing organization, wrote something similar!)

I have been remembering that experience in recent weeks as I pondered whether to take on a new set of challenges as the VP for communications at the World Resources Institute , a global think tank with some 450 employees, offices in  Brazil, China, India, and active projects in more than 50 countries. It hasn't been an easy decision. When Nancy Birdsall interviewed me in 2004 to become the Center for Global Development's first director of communications, I asked her what she hoped that CGD would become in five years. "Small, well-funded and influential," she replied. She had me. In the ten years since it has been my privilege and great good fortune to have had an opportunity to work closely with Nancy and the wonderful colleagues she has drawn to CGD to help make her vision a reality.

As part of my role I have twice co-authored essays ( the first with Ruth Levine , the second with Todd Moss ) that attempt to describe CGD’s secret sauce. Among the 12 lessons from CGD’s first 12 years that Todd and I included in the second essay, Lesson Nine states: “Resist  the growth inertia” and explains CGD’s decision—Nancy’s really—to stay small. Over the years this has proven to be the right decision for CGD, crucial to what makes us highly effective—and lots of fun. The leadership at WRI decided differently and in recent years it has grown dramatically, to become what is arguably the world’s most globalized think tank.

I don’t know the right answer to the think tank size question. Indeed, it’s unlikely that there’s a one-size fit all answer. Climate change, the problem that keeps me up at night (and the biggest single challenge to development and indeed to civilization as we know it) is the quintessential global problem. It’s reasonable to think that an institution with a global presence can be an important part of the response, and climate change is appropriately one of six areas of focus at WRI. Part of my job, starting on October 1, will be to build on efforts underway at WRI to make the most of this global reach.

One thing I know for certain is that CGD will continue to punch above its weight, making outsize contributions to thinking about development and the design and implementation of the wide range of policies (see CGD’s Commitment to Development Index ) that determine the playing field (often unfairly tilted against them) in which poor people in developing countries strive to improve their lives.

Writing the job description, which posted yesterday , was yet another exercise in reflecting on just how fortunate I have been to have participated in the creation of a remarkable institution. The world will soon know who will get the “best job in the world”. The position is for a caretaker to live on and look after a tropical island off the coast of Queensland, Australia. Duties include relaxing on the island, which is part of the Great Barrier Reef, and writing a blog to promote the area. Other responsibilities are to feed the fish, clean the pool and collect the mail. The job website, islandreefjob.com, tells applicants: “There are over 1,500 species of fish living in the Great Barrier Reef. Don’t worry. You won’t need to feed them all.” The successful applicant will get a salary of nearly US$100,000 for the six months. Officials from Queensland’s tourism department announced on Tuesday that they were now looking at 50 candidates. Unsurprisingly, over 35,000 people applied for the job.

   

The next stage in the selection process is to get the list of candidates down to 11. The tourism board will select ten people. Visitors to the website will choose an eleventh person. The public can look at the video applications of all 50 hopeful caretakers. The eleven lucky finalists will then fly to Hamilton Island for a formal interview. The winner will be announced on May 6, and the job starts on July 1. The current shortlist of 50 includes people from 22 countries. They include dancers, chefs, scientists and students and they all want a slice of paradise. Queensland Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said there was much discussion to narrow down the list to 50. The Teacher as a Person Teachers' Colleges, or Colleges of Education, which is a better term, will do two things: (a) They will continue the student's personal education and help him to become a good person. (b) They will introduce him to the difficult art of teaching, its theory and its practice. Some people think teachers' colleges should produce fully trained teachers at the end of the course. This is not what colleges do, or claim to do. They lay foundations upon which the young teacher can build. It is during the next five or ten years of teaching that he will complete for himself what the college began to do for him. Only in school (his work place) can he get the experience that counts. But, experience is of no use if we are too proud to learn by it. There are millions of people in the world who have had lots of experience-but they are no wiser. So, let us remember that the amount of experience we have had is of less importance than our ability to profit by it. The best teachers are those who have the humility and capacity to learn by success and failure. Humility is the capacity to accept the criticism of others and to criticize ourselves without feeling too sorry for ourselves. It should now be obvious to 'student teachers in training' that a large part of their future success depends on themselves, on their knowledge, on their attitude to learning their job, on their capacity to learn by their own experience, and on the conduct of their personal lives. But none of these good things is enough in itself to make a good teacher: Knowledge is not enough if we do not know how to pass it on to our students. Training is not enough if we have no knowledge to pass on. Experience is not enough unless we learn by it. Good character has to be supported by knowledge and skill in the classroom. What sort of person a teacher ought to be? 1. A teacher should be a person of good character-a man or woman who respects truth, who is sincere in word and act, who likes people and especially children, and whose personal life sets a good example to his pupils. He should have a sense of humour; which means that he can laugh at himself and that the children will laugh with him. These qualities of character are the solid foundation of the good teacher's work. Parents will feel that their children are safe in the care of such a person. 2. The good teacher will remain a student all his life-Only in this way can he become an educated person, which is what every teacher should wish to be. Teaching fails when we cease to learn, no matter how old we are. What we have learned at school and college is only the beginning of knowledge. The School Certificate is a beginning; the Teacher's Certificate is another beginning. If we have a university degree, this too is the beginning, not the end, of the journey. The word “Teacher” means a person who teaches in a school, whereas a person need not work in a hospital to be doctor and need not appear in court to be an advocate, so teaching refers to a process taking in a place or institution. It is consider being a profession rather than service. But, it should be classified as service through profession or a professional service. The tendency of the teachers should be such that they should realize the fact that each child sitting in front of them as a student is not a bundle of flesh, it has ‘urge’ for a search in it. The duties and responsibilities of teachers should be of missionary zeal which brings satisfaction to both teacher and the learner. The satisfaction should be mutual and reciprocal. But the satisfaction of teachers depends upon mostly in the outcome of the efforts and performance of a student. Swami ji has innumerable words for the teacher. Much weight is given to piousness and characters of the teachers than the competence. Vivekananda says that the teacher should posses certain qualities. These are: A teacher should be a ‘tyaagi’ in the real sense of the term. He should posses a sound moral character and led an ideal life. He should remember that example is better than precept. Therefore, he should influence his pupils through his ways of living, feeling, behaving and doing. A teacher must be dedicated to the teaching profession with a view to rendering selfless service like an ancient guru. The teacher should love his pupils. He should be sympathetic to his students. Without the sympathy he cannot teach to the pupil. A teacher must have a machinery zeal and angelic motive behind the act of teaching. The role of a teacher is like a gardener, who prepares a ground for his plants, protects them, gives manure, water and makes the plants grow.

A. Introduction The Education Working Group (EWG) and Save the Children (SC-UK) commissioned a review of the literature on Pakistani teachers and especially good teaching. The review found that a ‘good’ teacher was the outcome of a combination of factors, including education and (to a lesser extent) training, competencies (personal, social and pedagogical), and supervision and support of head and colleagues. The review noted that the perspective of children was missing in most studies, and interviews were the most common tool used to gather data. The group felt the need to explore good teaching from the children’s perspective, and to provide children with the opportunity to express themselves through more creative mediums. The present study aimed to identify the concept of a good teacher from the perspectives of children particularly, parents, heads/colleagues and teachers themselves; identify the practices of outstanding teachers in and beyond the classroom/school; generate ideas for improving the teaching-learning process in Pakistani schools, particularly for low-income groups; and generate guidelines regarding identifying, recruiting and fostering good teachers and promoting self-sustaining teacher networks. The study was conducted in Lahore and Peshawer city and rural Kasur and Haripur districts. 16 good teachers were identified from 14 government, one private and one NGO-run primary/elementary schools. Their teaching was assessed using a classroom observation checklist. Data was collected separately on the ‘ideal teacher’ and ‘bad teacher’, and the actual ‘good teacher’ in the school. The head/colleague of the school, selected pupils and their parents (57 in number) were interviewed, and children participated in focus group discussions, role plays, and drawing teachers. Data of 518 children (281 boys, 237 girls, 251 urban, 267 rural) was collected through these methods. B. Key Findings In presenting the findings the views of children have been highlighted using italics. The ideal teacher is seen by almost all stakeholders as a soft, loving and courteous person who is neat, clean and well dressed, regular and punctual and upholds high ethical values. The ideal teacher teaches well. S/he establishes a good rapport with children, plans her lesson, explains well, uses AV aids and activities to teach, gives and checks home work, and avoids punishing children to a large extent. The general view of the bad teacher is that of a person who comes to school irregularly and late, teaches poorly or not at all, does not plan lesson, and ignores children’s needs and views. There is a remarkable similarity in the descriptions of the good teacher given by children, parents and colleagues of teachers, and observations by the researchers. They present a strikingly positive image of the good teacher, including his/her personality, competence, teaching and class management skills. However, teachers were far more modest about themselves, particularly about their personality. In the eyes of the different stakeholders the teacher identified as the best teacher in the school is soft, loving, courteous, tolerant, and considerate. S/he is regular and punctual, makes good use of time, is ethical, keeps in contact with parents and handles them well, and organizes co-curricular activities. The teacher is competent in the subjects taught and covers the complete syllabus. S/he displays good teaching skills (plans and structures lesson, explains well, uses AV aids and activities to teach, assesses children in class, gives and checks homework). The teacher also reinforces positive behavior and gives extra work to bright children. It is evident from the foregoing that all the stakeholders were fully aware of the high commitment to teaching and the excellent teaching skills of the good teacher. In the view of teachers and heads the key factors contributing to good teaching are a good working environment (school facilities), a respectful, cooperative and trusting attitude of the school administration (including involvement in decision making), cooperative colleagues, and refresher courses. Parents and/or teachers served as role models, leading to imbibing humane values, while a conducive home environment helped teachers to dedicate themselves to their work. Teachers also continued to develop themselves continuously through reading and use of media. C. Analysis of the Findings The study demonstrates that good teachers are primarily good human beings, with a loving personality, flexibility, patience, a quiet assertiveness, and a love for children and teaching. They maintain a good balance between the needs of their job (ensuring learning) and those of the children (play, development of self-esteem). Because of this they rarely need to use physical punishment to ensure learning. They fill the void experienced by most children in their homes. In many ways they represent the traditional model of teaching and learning, where the teacher is a member of the family, and learning is a holistic, integrated, continuous experience. One of the striking aspects of the study is the detailed knowledge of pupils regarding their teachers, including personal information as well as their teaching skills and weaknesses. D. Key Recommendations The recommendations for the study are presented separately for the different stakeholders. Children should: • follow the teachings of good teachers in school and at home • try to get knowledge from all possible sources (including books, media, etc.) • participate in co-curricular and creative activities • assist weak and shy children in their class/school • assist the teacher in checking work, maintaining discipline, etc. • keep parents informed about school matters Good teachers should: • encourage other teachers to observe their classes, learn from them, as well as provide feedback • inform parents of the practices used by them with their children and their impact. Parents should: • participate in parent teacher meetings and take an active interest in school affairs • dissuade poor teachers from negative practices and encourage them to adopt the practices of good teachers. • follow the instructions of the good teacher in relation to their own children (e.g. doing home work, avoiding burden of household chores). Heads should: • appreciate and reward good teaching and classroom management practices and regularity and punctuality of teachers • arrange classroom observation of good teaching by teachers and replication in their own classrooms • organise workshops on good teaching and classroom management practices in the school in which good teachers and trainers/supervisors conduct sessions • ensure that the complete syllabus is covered by teachers • involve teachers as far as possible in making decisions affecting their own work • encourage parents to take an active interest in school affairs, including financial contribution, learning about good teaching practices and their impact on children • arrange for necessary teaching aids and other facilities • organise co-curricular activities in school (including drawing competitions, role plays by children, etc.) • interact with other schools and encourage the formation of teacher networks, including joint workshops, classroom observation, etc. Colleagues of good teachers should: • be sensitive to the needs of children • observe and model the good practices of good teachers in and outside the school • appreciate the good practices of the good teacher • encourage good teachers and head to observe their teaching and provide feedback Department officials should: • recruit teachers who have basic communication skills and content knowledge and interest in children and teaching • assess teachers on an on-going basis • organise on-going training for teachers • provide necessary facilities required for teaching • have female teachers teach young children where good female teachers are available • adapt and introduce the PEP-ILE train-and-visit model in other provinces. Voluntary organisations should: • disseminate the practices of good teachers • organise training of their teachers • assist in the formation of teacher networks Donors should: • provide funding to support and reward good teaching • disseminate the practices of good teachers and the PEP-ILE model • support the formation of teacher networks.

Teacher is the most efficient and responsible person who shapes the students' life styles, their attitudes toward the society, and affects students' development as well as creativity. The basic determiner of the education quality is the teacher. He has a direct effect on not only the environment but also the country's development. Therefore each country gives importance to prepare their teachers through special programs. The purpose of this research is to investigate the opinions of teacher candidates' at the faculty of educational science on teaching profession. The first grade students of primary school department, social science department, preschool education department participated to this research. The sample group of the research covers 162 students in the fall semester of the 2015-2016 academic year in Ankara University Faculty of Educational Sciences. Descriptive survey model has been used for gathering teacher candidates' opinions. Open ended five question has been used out as data collection instrument. And content analyses model has been used to analyse the responses of the teacher candidates with their own sentences. Results have been presented with tables and the data has been interpreted.

The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability. The writing system of raised dots used by visually impaired people was developed by Louis Braille in nineteenth-century France. In a society that did not value disabled people in general, blindness was particularly stigmatized, and lack of access to reading and writing was a significant barrier to social participation. The idea of tactile reading was not entirely new, but existing methods based on sighted systems were difficult to learn and use. As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness. This essay begins by discussing the situation of blind people in nineteenth-century Europe. It then describes the invention of Braille and the gradual process of its acceptance within blind education. Subsequently, it explores the wide-ranging effects of this invention on blind people’s social and cultural lives.

Lack of access to reading and writing put blind people at a serious disadvantage in nineteenth-century society. Text was one of the primary methods through which people engaged with culture, communicated with others, and accessed information; without a well-developed reading system that did not rely on sight, blind people were excluded from social participation (Weygand, 2009). While disabled people in general suffered from discrimination, blindness was widely viewed as the worst disability, and it was commonly believed that blind people were incapable of pursuing a profession or improving themselves through culture (Weygand, 2009). This demonstrates the importance of reading and writing to social status at the time: without access to text, it was considered impossible to fully participate in society. Blind people were excluded from the sighted world, but also entirely dependent on sighted people for information and education.

In France, debates about how to deal with disability led to the adoption of different strategies over time. While people with temporary difficulties were able to access public welfare, the most common response to people with long-term disabilities, such as hearing or vision loss, was to group them together in institutions (Tombs, 1996). At first, a joint institute for the blind and deaf was created, and although the partnership was motivated more by financial considerations than by the well-being of the residents, the institute aimed to help people develop skills valuable to society (Weygand, 2009). Eventually blind institutions were separated from deaf institutions, and the focus shifted towards education of the blind, as was the case for the Royal Institute for Blind Youth, which Louis Braille attended (Jimenez et al, 2009). The growing acknowledgement of the uniqueness of different disabilities led to more targeted education strategies, fostering an environment in which the benefits of a specifically blind education could be more widely recognized.

Several different systems of tactile reading can be seen as forerunners to the method Louis Braille developed, but these systems were all developed based on the sighted system. The Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris taught the students to read embossed roman letters, a method created by the school’s founder, Valentin Hauy (Jimenez et al., 2009). Reading this way proved to be a rather arduous task, as the letters were difficult to distinguish by touch. The embossed letter method was based on the reading system of sighted people, with minimal adaptation for those with vision loss. As a result, this method did not gain significant success among blind students.

Louis Braille was bound to be influenced by his school’s founder, but the most influential pre-Braille tactile reading system was Charles Barbier’s night writing. A soldier in Napoleon’s army, Barbier developed a system in 1819 that used 12 dots with a five line musical staff (Kersten, 1997). His intention was to develop a system that would allow the military to communicate at night without the need for light (Herron, 2009). The code developed by Barbier was phonetic (Jimenez et al., 2009); in other words, the code was designed for sighted people and was based on the sounds of words, not on an actual alphabet. Barbier discovered that variants of raised dots within a square were the easiest method of reading by touch (Jimenez et al., 2009). This system proved effective for the transmission of short messages between military personnel, but the symbols were too large for the fingertip, greatly reducing the speed at which a message could be read (Herron, 2009). For this reason, it was unsuitable for daily use and was not widely adopted in the blind community.

Nevertheless, Barbier’s military dot system was more efficient than Hauy’s embossed letters, and it provided the framework within which Louis Braille developed his method. Barbier’s system, with its dashes and dots, could form over 4000 combinations (Jimenez et al., 2009). Compared to the 26 letters of the Latin alphabet, this was an absurdly high number. Braille kept the raised dot form, but developed a more manageable system that would reflect the sighted alphabet. He replaced Barbier’s dashes and dots with just six dots in a rectangular configuration (Jimenez et al., 2009). The result was that the blind population in France had a tactile reading system using dots (like Barbier’s) that was based on the structure of the sighted alphabet (like Hauy’s); crucially, this system was the first developed specifically for the purposes of the blind.

While the Braille system gained immediate popularity with the blind students at the Institute in Paris, it had to gain acceptance among the sighted before its adoption throughout France. This support was necessary because sighted teachers and leaders had ultimate control over the propagation of Braille resources. Many of the teachers at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth resisted learning Braille’s system because they found the tactile method of reading difficult to learn (Bullock & Galst, 2009). This resistance was symptomatic of the prevalent attitude that the blind population had to adapt to the sighted world rather than develop their own tools and methods. Over time, however, with the increasing impetus to make social contribution possible for all, teachers began to appreciate the usefulness of Braille’s system (Bullock & Galst, 2009), realizing that access to reading could help improve the productivity and integration of people with vision loss. It took approximately 30 years, but the French government eventually approved the Braille system, and it was established throughout the country (Bullock & Galst, 2009).

Although Blind people remained marginalized throughout the nineteenth century, the Braille system granted them growing opportunities for social participation. Most obviously, Braille allowed people with vision loss to read the same alphabet used by sighted people (Bullock & Galst, 2009), allowing them to participate in certain cultural experiences previously unavailable to them. Written works, such as books and poetry, had previously been inaccessible to the blind population without the aid of a reader, limiting their autonomy. As books began to be distributed in Braille, this barrier was reduced, enabling people with vision loss to access information autonomously. The closing of the gap between the abilities of blind and the sighted contributed to a gradual shift in blind people’s status, lessening the cultural perception of the blind as essentially different and facilitating greater social integration.

The Braille system also had important cultural effects beyond the sphere of written culture. Its invention later led to the development of a music notation system for the blind, although Louis Braille did not develop this system himself (Jimenez, et al., 2009). This development helped remove a cultural obstacle that had been introduced by the popularization of written musical notation in the early 1500s. While music had previously been an arena in which the blind could participate on equal footing, the transition from memory-based performance to notation-based performance meant that blind musicians were no longer able to compete with sighted musicians (Kersten, 1997). As a result, a tactile musical notation system became necessary for professional equality between blind and sighted musicians (Kersten, 1997).

Braille paved the way for dramatic cultural changes in the way blind people were treated and the opportunities available to them. Louis Braille’s innovation was to reimagine existing reading systems from a blind perspective, and the success of this invention required sighted teachers to adapt to their students’ reality instead of the other way around. In this sense, Braille helped drive broader social changes in the status of blindness. New accessibility tools provide practical advantages to those who need them, but they can also change the perspectives and attitudes of those who do not.

  • Relevant background information that the reader needs to know.
  • A thesis statement that presents your main point or argument.

The length of each part depends on the length and complexity of your essay .

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . Everything else you write should relate to this key idea.

A topic sentence is a sentence that expresses the main point of a paragraph . Everything else in the paragraph should relate to the topic sentence.

At college level, you must properly cite your sources in all essays , research papers , and other academic texts (except exams and in-class exercises).

Add a citation whenever you quote , paraphrase , or summarize information or ideas from a source. You should also give full source details in a bibliography or reference list at the end of your text.

The exact format of your citations depends on which citation style you are instructed to use. The most common styles are APA , MLA , and Chicago .

Amazon receives tens of thousands of resumes a year—so it’s critical that you submit one that really stands out from the crowd. We know that creating the “perfect” resume is easier said than done. The entire process can be nerve-racking and filled with a list of never-ending questions, like “One page or two?”; “Am I providing enough information?”; or “How do I explain professional gaps?” Most people struggle with crafting their resume, but with a bit of guidance, anyone can learn how to best present themselves on paper.

With this in mind, we reached out to several Amazon recruiters to get their best tips. Here’s what they had to say.

While it may seem counterintuitive to lean into design simplicity when you are hoping to create a resume that stands out, it’s truly in your best interest.

At Amazon, we are looking for resumes that are well-organized, use straightforward language, highlight measurable data, and are streamlined for maximum readability. A concise resume allows a recruiter to get a clear idea of who you are as a candidate and what you have to offer through your professional experiences, strengths, and education.

Anna Duong, manager of Americas Stores Tech Talent Acquisition, recommends sticking to the basics. Duong said, “While there are no hard rules, it’s best to keep a resume text-forward, black and white, and simple.” Remember we’re most interested in your accomplishments and less concerned about font styles, decorative borders, and non-essential information.

“A successful resume should focus on your actions and results,” said Bhavishya Lingam, senior recruiting business partner at Amazon Stores. Whenever possible, ensure you are including relevant data to help quantify your success and show how you have been able to drive impact at scale for the business. Focusing on quantifiable actions strengthens your resume significantly.

For example, instead of saying, “Responsible for introducing new tech stack into our organization,” you can make this stronger by saying, “Successfully led the acquisition and integration of innovative efficiency software that reduced errors by 25%, resulting in a reduction of customer complaints by 37% YoY.” We understand that every bullet point on your resume might not have a quantifiable measurement, but Amazon is a data-driven company so the more ways you’re able to quantify your success the better.

“You don’t need a completely different resume for each role you apply to, but it is a good rule of thumb to take the opportunity to align your professional accomplishments with the key elements of the role you’re pursuing,” said Patti Cudney, senior recruiting business partner. To do this, we suggest that you look at the key words and phrases within the “Basic and Preferred Qualifications” sections, and use this as a guide to help you determine what you should focus on in your resume.

Remember that not all experiences and skills are equally relevant to every job opportunity that you will eventually apply to, so continually reference the job description to make sure you’re prioritizing the right information. By taking the additional time to tailor your resume to match the job requirements, you demonstrate your genuine interest and suitability for the position.

Jen Paradise, RC manager talent acquisition, suggests you detail how you made a difference in previous positions. “Be sure to include specific stand-out accomplishments of what you’ve been able to achieve in each role,” she said.

Job responsibilities highlight what you do, while accomplishments showcase the tangible outcomes and results you achieved while fulfilling those responsibilities. At Amazon, we are a company of builders who bring varying backgrounds, ideas, and points of view to decisions and innovations on behalf of our customers. It’s this type of culture that encourages us to seek talented people who are invested in the outcomes of their work and want to deliver results.

Highlighting your accomplishments gives you the opportunity to tell the hiring manager something they don’t already know about you. In most cases, we can easily determine what are the associated responsibilities for a particular job description, but that doesn’t tell us anything about you as a candidate. However, when you provide accomplishments instead of responsibilities, we’re able to clearly see a snapshot of your strengths and ability to drive impact at scale.

It should hardly come as a surprise but the American labor market keeps on chugging, according to the latest data on job openings released Tuesday by the Labor Department.

The number of job openings at the end of February remained largely unchanged from the prior month, at 8.76 million compared to estimates of 8.73 million and a downwardly revised 8.75 million in January. The number of people quitting their jobs also changed little.

“In February, job openings increased in finance and insurance (+126,000); state and local government, excluding education (+91,000); and arts, entertainment, and recreation (+51,000),” according to the release. “Job openings decreased in information (-85,000) and in the federal government (-21,000).”

While the overall number has fallen considerably from the 12.2 million registered at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is still consistent with a strong labor market.

“Job market largely unchanged in February #JOLTS data,” Daniel Zhao, lead economist at Glassdoor, posted on social media. “Hires rate bumps up to 3.7% after string of weak data, quits flat at 2.2% for 4th straight month, layoffs tick up to 1,724,000, still slightly below pre-pandemic avgs.”

The job openings number is the first in a series of reports due out this week on the state of the labor market for March. Next up is Wednesday’s release of the employer survey from private payroll firm ADP. Economists are forecasting a gain of 150,000 – up from February’s 140,000.

The main event is Friday’s release of the government’s March report on nonfarm payrolls. After surprising to the upside in February with a 275,000 increase, analysts expect the number to come in around 200,000, indicating an expanding and strong job market that is normalizing after the disruptions following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I really do think we’ve reached a steady state,” says Amy Glaser, senior vice president of Adecco. “Some industries are hiring, some are not.”

Adecco is seeing strong demand in the health care and hospitality sectors, Glaser says, but there have been variances depending on location. “The Northeast had some pretty big weather impacts, the South is hot right now.”

The labor market is reflecting a strong economy at the moment, with the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta’s GPDNow suggesting growth in the first quarter of 2.8%, an increase from 2.3% as recently as March 29.

“Growth has remained strong despite higher rates because higher rates have not notably impacted the ability of consumers to service debt,” said Gargi Chaudhuri, chief investment and portfolio strategist, Americas, at BlackRock. “Many U.S. consumers were able to lock in fixed-rate mortgages during the period of exceptionally low rates of 2020-2021. While rate hikes have lifted 30-year mortgage rates to their highest level in 20 years, mortgage debt servicing is near its least costly levels on record.”

The stronger economic performance and higher inflation has led the Federal Reserve to say it is not yet ready to lower interest rates, now at the highest levels in two decades. But markets are pricing in anywhere from two to three cuts this year. The timing of the first cut remains uncertain with June favored by most analysts.

“Looking forward, our base case is that the Fed engineers a soft landing and starts to normalize policy rates in the second half of the year,” Chaudhuri added. “Before beginning this normalization, the Fed needs to have greater confidence on the trajectory of inflation. One key component of this is wages, where we’re closely watching several measures, including average hourly earnings and the employment cost index.”

Every year, Time Magazine issues a list of the 200 best inventions of the past 12 months. Frankly, I don’t know how the editors do it. The dirty secret of this job is that true, game-changing inventions rarely cross your desk. In fact, you’re extraordinarily lucky if you average one a year.

Oculus’ Rift prototype felt like just such a device when it first crossed my radar more than a decade ago. More than anything, the system resembled a hastily duct-taped ski mask. It was a remarkable presentation, in hindsight — an all-too-rare glimpse into a plucky entrepreneurial tech spirit. It evokes a flood of romanticized images of Homebrew Computer Club nerds soldering together circuit boards in South Bay garages.

A decade has now passed since Meta (née Facebook) announced plans to acquire the startup for $2 billion. A decade after the deal was announced, it’s safe to say that the VR headset hasn’t changed the world we live in. But there’s always that little-discussed middle ground between transforming the human condition and just being an abject dumpster fire of failure. So, where, as of April 2024, does the Facebook/Oculus deal rank?

“Immersive gaming will be the first, and Oculus already has big plans here that won’t be changing and we hope to accelerate,” Mark Zuckerberg wrote at the time. “After games, we’re going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face — just by putting on goggles in your home.”

Facebook’s founder referred to the Oculus Rift as a “new communication platform,” comparing it to computers, the internet and smartphones before it. He suggested that the “dream of science fiction” was now a reality — one that Facebook had suddenly cornered. It’s hard to overstate how transformative Zuckerberg believed the technology to be. It was, after all, the gateway to the metaverse.

Should anyone doubt the company’s commitment to the concept, in late 2021, it rebranded itself as “Meta,”  killing off the Oculus brand the same afternoon. Surely social media platforms wouldn’t dominate online discourse forever. They would eventually give way to something wholly new. Except that despite that $500 billion rebrand , Zuckerberg and company never did a particularly good job of defining the metaverse. They simply insisted that it was an exciting thing that you should be excited about.

I suspect that were you to perform a blind poll, the majority of people who are familiar with the term meta would describe something like Second Life, the virtual world that to be on its fifth or sixth life by now. Mark Zuckerberg is probably as guilty as any single person for perpetuating that perception, happily working his hardest to make the company’s Horizon Worlds platform synonymous with conceptions of the metaverse. Remember what a big deal it was when its avatars finally got legs ?

So where are we now? It’s complicated, obviously. From a purely financial standpoint (the only language shareholders speak), things are bleak. Between the end of 2020 and the first quarter of 2024, the company’s metaverse division lost $42 billion. That’s roughly 21x the price it paid for Oculus, not adjusting for inflation. That’s a little over one-fourth a Zuckerberg (not adjusted for inflation — i.e., BJJ-related bulking).

Why is Meta hemorrhaging that much money? The simple and cynical answer is, because it can. The corporation made $134 billion in revenue and $39.1 billion in net income last year. That’s not to say that having a division that’s $42 billion in the red over four years doesn’t impact its bottom line, of course. But Facebook believes it’s playing the long game here.

It’s widely believed that Meta sells its Quest headsets at a loss . This is despite the fact that the company has easily the best manufacturing scale in the industry. It doesn’t take an MBA to understand that this is a terrible short-term strategy, but again, Meta believes it’s playing the long game. The end game is getting enough of these devices into people’s hands to reach a critical mass of adoption, word of mouth and developer content. If you can’t do that while turning a profit, well, you gotta spend money to make money, right?

It continues to be a massive bet. How long the company is willing to play the long game here, however, largely comes down to how much patience Meta’s shareholders have. If it can truly saturate the market and corner content, it will be better positioned to capitalize on mixed reality’s hypothetical exponential growth.

It has already edged the competition out of the market and generally sucked the air out of the room. As an HTC Vive exec told me back in February at MWC, “I think Meta has adjusted the market perception of what this technology should cost.” Other companies can’t compete on price and content in the customer space, so the savviest of the bunch have moved over to enterprise, where clients have much deeper pockets.

If you judge the company’s journey in terms how much of the VR headset market it controls, it’s been a wild and unprecedented success. According to IDC, Meta had a 50.2% share as of Q2 2023. Of course, we’re not talking about smartphone figures here. As of early 2023, Meta was estimated to have sold 20 million headsets. At the end of the year, the Quest 2 was still outselling the Quest 3. One part of the Meta thesis has absolutely played out: People are looking for an inexpensive on-ramp to the technology.

When Apple announced the Vision Pro at WWDC 2024, I received a flood of unsolicited comments from VR headset manufacturers all stating they saw the iPhone maker’s headset as validation for the space. You can cynically (and correctly) point out that everyone says some version of that when Apple enters their vertical, and many of them don’t make it out the other side in one piece.

But I concur that Apple throwing its hat in the ring after decades of failed VR attempts does constitute validation. That’s absolutely the case for Meta. Zuckerberg happily used the opportunity to point out that his headsets were (1) significantly less expensive and (2) didn’t require an external battery. Meta also had a large head start in terms of VR-specific content. Naturally, Zuckerberg also insisted that his product was vastly superior in spite of the significantly lower price point.

“It seems like there are a lot of people who just assumed that Vision Pro would be higher quality because it’s Apple and it costs $3,000 more,” he noted in February, “but honestly, I’m pretty surprised that Quest is so much better for the vast majority of things that people use these headsets for, with that price differential.”

Sorry, Zuck, the Vision Pro is the more impressive piece of technology. Whether it’s $3,000 more impressive is a different conversation. What I can tell you right now is that the pricing gulf puts these products into different categories. Apple is targeting business customers at that price point, while Meta is far more committed to democratizing access by — again — losing money on a per-unit basis.

It’s still early days for Vision Pro — and, really, mixed reality in general. If it ever does truly become ubiquitous, it will be the result of countless hard-fought battles. As we mark a decade since the Oculus acquisition, I find myself returning to the above Zuckerberg comment: “Imagine enjoying a courtside seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face — just by putting on goggles in your home.”

Re-reading this from the vantage point of 2024, it strikes me that he was right about the content, but not necessarily the delivery mechanism. The past four years have dramatically impacted how we interact with each other, the world and day-to-day activities. The pandemic de-stigmatized so many virtual activities. But for the time being, no headsets are required.

New York Takes Crucial Step Toward Making Congestion Pricing a Reality

New York City completed a crucial final step on Wednesday in a decades-long effort to become the first American city to roll out a comprehensive congestion pricing program, one that aims to push motorists out of their cars and onto mass transit by charging new tolls to drive into Midtown and Lower Manhattan.

The program could start as early as mid-June after the board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the state agency that will install and manage the program, voted 11-to-1 to approve the final tolling rates, which will charge most passenger cars $15 a day to enter at 60th Street and below in Manhattan. The program is expected to reduce traffic and raise $1 billion annually for public transit improvements.

It was a historic moment for New York’s leaders and transportation advocates after decades of failed attempts to advance congestion pricing even as other gridlocked cities around the world, including London, Stockholm and Singapore, proved that similar programs could reduce traffic and pollution.

While other American cities have introduced related concepts by establishing toll roads or closing streets to traffic, the plan in New York is unmatched in ambition and scale.

Congestion pricing is expected to reduce the number of vehicles that enter Lower Manhattan by about 17 percent, according to a November study by an advisory committee reporting to the M.T.A. The report also said that the total number of miles driven in 28 counties across the region would be reduced.

“This was the right thing to do,” Janno Lieber, the authority’s chairman and chief executive, said after the vote. “New York has more traffic than any place in the United States, and now we’re doing something about it.”

Congestion pricing has long been a hard sell in New York, where many people commute by car from the boroughs outside of Manhattan and the suburbs, in part because some of them do not have access to public transit.

New York State legislators finally approved congestion pricing in 2019 after Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo helped push it through. A series of recent breakdowns in the city’s subway system had underscored the need for billions of dollars to update its aging infrastructure.

It has taken another five years to reach the starting line. Before the tolling program can begin, it must be reviewed by the Federal Highway Administration, which is expected to approve it.

Congestion pricing also faces legal challenges from six lawsuits that have been brought by elected officials and residents from across the New York region. Opponents have increasingly mobilized against the program in recent months, citing the cost of the tolls and the potential environmental effects from shifting traffic and pollution to other areas as drivers avoid the tolls.

A court hearing is scheduled for April 3 and 4 on a lawsuit brought by the State of New Jersey, which is seen as the most serious legal challenge. The mayor of Fort Lee, N.J., Mark J. Sokolich, has filed a related lawsuit.

Four more lawsuits have been brought in New York: by Ed Day, the Rockland County executive; by Vito Fossella, the Staten Island borough president, and the United Federation of Teachers; and by two separate groups of city residents.

Amid the litigation, M.T.A. officials have suspended some capital construction projects that were to be paid for by the program, and they said at a committee meeting on Monday that crucial work to modernize subway signals on the A and C lines had been delayed.

Nearly all the toll readers have been installed, and will automatically charge drivers for entering the designated congestion zone at 60th Street or below. There is no toll for leaving the zone or driving around in it. Through traffic on Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive and the West Side Highway will not be tolled.

Under the final tolling structure, which was based on recommendations by the advisory panel, most passenger vehicles will be charged $15 a day from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends. The toll will be $24 for small trucks and charter buses, and will rise to $36 for large trucks and tour buses. It will be $7.50 for motorcycles.

Those tolls will be discounted by 75 percent at night, dropping the cost for a passenger vehicle to $3.75.

Fares will go up by $1.25 for taxis and black car services, and by $2.50 for Uber and Lyft. Passengers will be responsible for paying the new fees, and they will be added to every ride that begins, ends or occurs within the congestion zone. There will be no nighttime discounts. (The new fees come on top of an existing congestion surcharge that was imposed on for-hire vehicles in 2019.)

The tolls will mostly be collected using the E-ZPass system. Electronic detection points have been placed at entrances and exits to the tolling zone. Drivers who do not use an E-ZPass will pay significantly higher fees — for instance, $22.50 instead of $15 during peak hours for passenger vehicles.

Emergency vehicles like fire trucks, ambulances and police cars, as well as vehicles carrying people with disabilities, were exempted from the new tolls under the state’s congestion pricing legislation .

As for discounts, low-income drivers who make less than $50,000 annually can apply to receive half off the daytime toll after their first 10 trips in a calendar month. In addition, low-income residents of the congestion zone who make less than $60,000 a year can apply for a state tax credit.

All drivers entering the zone directly from four tolled tunnels — the Lincoln, Holland, Hugh L. Carey and Queens-Midtown — will receive a “crossing credit” that will be applied against the daytime toll. The credit will be $5 round-trip for passenger vehicles, $12 for small trucks and intercity and charter buses, $20 for large trucks and tour buses, and $2.50 for motorcycles. No credits will be offered at night.
