I recently had a conversation with a retired teacher who later went on to a successful career at a major technology company. She shared with me the difference she experienced when she was introduced as a teacher versus as someone who works in tech. “It is almost like they were sorry in the first case and curious in the second,” she noted. This disrespect for teachers is something she has been sensing again.

We owe it to educators (as well as all students) to ensure they feel the trust and respect they deserve. That is particularly important right now because teachers stay in the profession when they believe their voices are valued, and they have a supportive work environment. However, more than three-quarters of the teachers in a recent survey listed lack of respect as one of the serious issues they face . When more than 60% of Americans say they would not want their kids to become teachers , teachers feel disrespected. When teachers’ autonomy to make professional decisions is diminished, teachers feel disrespected.

Educators have specific professional knowledge that is developed through initial preparation, professional development, and reflective practice. This is the case for superintendents, principals, teachers, and many more educators who make up our school systems. In the case of teachers, they not only need to know the content they teach; they need to develop a type of knowledge called “pedagogical content knowledge,” which was first defined in the 1980s as knowledge that goes beyond content to include knowledge of teaching in specific domains. This knowledge is specific to the teaching profession, just as engineers, economists, architects, doctors, pharmacists and other professionals have knowledge that is specific to theirs. Thus, in the same way we respect other professionals for their knowledge, we should respect educators and trust their expertise.

But that’s not always happening. My colleague who moved to the tech field specifically mentioned limiting teachers’ choice of books to read in school as an example of the lack of respect shown to educators. Choosing what to read is an integral part of educators’ professional autonomy to make decisions regarding instruction. When educators’ options are reduced, it disregards their professional knowledge and sidesteps the processes through which instructional materials are selected in school. Teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge includes their ability to select appropriate materials to promote student learning, foster curiosity, and enhance students’ comprehension of the world. Limiting the books teachers can use removes important tools from their pedagogical repertoire.

As a dean of a College of Education, I think about the professionals we prepare. The idea that their professional choice of instructional tools is being challenged is worrisome. The reality that they are experiencing a sense of disrespect is disheartening. Educators who graduate from our colleges are prepared to focus on student learning, to impart knowledge, to promote growth, and to make sure everyone in their classrooms achieves their potential. That is the educator’s role. That is what they work for every day, despite all difficulties and challenges. Improvement is something we should always strive for, day-in and day-out, and educators in our schools are working above and beyond their call of duty to do the best they can to support all learners. Trust, resources, and better working conditions are what they need.

As a state, we need educators to stay in the profession. Each one of us can help make that happen by respecting them. When meeting teachers, principals, superintendents and other educators, be curious about their work. Learn from their professional knowledge. And let decisions that require educators’ professional knowledge ultimately rest in their hands.

Teaching is considered as a noble profession, with teachers granted the privilege of respect within the society. In several societies, the teacher is allowed a place of respect just like an individual’s mother or father. In other words, teachers are upheld as men and women of wisdom and infinite knowledge, hence deserving respect. However, the democratization of education has opened up opportunities for different students from different castes, creeds, class, and places of birth, an aspect that has seen the need for more teachers and schools. In as much as teachers remain in authority in molding students, there is a need to place them on top of the social pyramid with due respect as the makers of character in students.

Secondly, teachers uphold students with much care and sincerity as they would do their children. According to several communities, teachers are perceived as the greatest of all parents since they spend much of their time with their subjects compared to their parents. In this case, it is evident to consider that the parents are solely responsible for the birth of their children while the teachers take part in shaping their character in a bid to make their futures bright, an aspect that denotes the need to respect out teachers. Given this, we should never ignore or neglect our teachers, but always ensure that we grant them the respect and love they require.

On the other hand, parents are given the responsibility of showing love and quality care to their children. However, it is upon the teachers to shape the characters and behaviors of children to enable them to share their love with the world and the things they relate with in life. Teachers, in this case, ensure that their students understand the significance of education in their lives through their continuous efforts. Teachers additionally act as sources of inspiration for the students, thus nurturing success and the capacity to understand life. The teachers, therefore, motivate their students through the use of examples of great personalities globally with the intention of making their lives a success. In this regard, they ensure that their students are stronger and prepared to withstand all the barriers in life. Through their immense knowledge and wisdom, the teachers nourish the lives of their students to ensure they turn out responsible in life, thus denoting the need to grant them respect in the community.

Teachers additionally play significant roles towards the education and the shaping of their students’ lives. This is evident in the fact that teachers are vision bearers, knowledge holders, and experience givers in life. The teaching profession, therefore, accords the teachers great responsibility that shapes the students tomorrow, thus establishing the need to respect the teachers since this impacts the growth, well-being, and development of their subjects. In as much as there are times when our teachers are bound to make a fool out of us by embarrassing and humiliating us in a classroom, considered as the cruelest punishment, we should never retaliate badly. Given this, we need to ensure that as students we are in a position to abide by all the rules of the school, an aspect that cultivates respect between the students and the teachers. Additionally, we need to make teachers our best friends and not enemies, a perception that has been established by students, thus negating the perception of respecting teachers. In this regard, it is vital to attest to the fact that all the great minds that exist in the world today have passed through the hands of teachers, thus positing the need to respect our teachers.

“Why We Should Respect Teachers and Why We Must Be Mindfully Careful About What Comes Next for Educators and Education”

If the COVID-19 pause has changed anything for the good- I think that many, if not most parents, have gained a newfound respect for teachers as a result of the distance learning that prompted “homeschooling” over the past 7 weeks. Prior to this global crisis, teachers were not generally accepted by society and some parents as professionals working hard each and every day with their students- our children.

Once maligned by far too many people for working “short” days and having summers off, parents now have come to find that teachers work as long and as hard outside of the classroom in preparation, as they do inside the classroom with the variety of learning styles, personalities, needs and differing motivations that children bring into the learning environment each day.

I come from a family full of teachers and educators. My mom was a teacher, I have a daughter and a son who are both Special Education teachers, numerous aunts, sisters-in-law, nieces, and many friends are teachers. Much of my professional life has been spent working with teachers- supporting them and providing training and consultation to them. So it is no wonder that during this week especially- I am profoundly proud and thankful for teachers in my life. Most of us can remember at least one teacher who had a profound effect on our life at some point in our development- someone who had a positive impact on us and made us the person we are today. I call these teachers from our past, “Instruments of Inspiration.”

Yet prior to the COVID interruption teachers in America in too many cases were made to feel belittled, and under-appreciated. In many ways teachers have been vilified- the profession disparaged. This trend in thinking over the past couple of decades has prompted a very real teacher shortage in America- a shortage likely to grow worse over the next decade.

Because of this negative messaging about teachers and the teaching profession, college students are significantly less likely than their parents to see teaching as a viable way to become agents of social change. Of all age groups, voters 18-29 are the most pessimistic about the teaching profession. Only 24 percent are “very likely” to encourage a friend or family member to become a K-12 teacher today.

I recently read an essay on the teaching profession where the researchers were asking people to name another profession which they felt had a comparable status to teaching. In the West, teachers were overwhelmingly thought of in the same status bracket as librarians or social workers. Compare that to China, where teachers were considered to have an equal status to that of doctors.

There is a definitive societal lack of respect for teachers in the West. The media is a huge source of fueling the demise of the teaching profession. When teachers get a mention in the media, they have often been blamed for a vast array of society’s ills: from the loss of manners, to the decline in academic performance, to the shortage of viably trained professionals and vocational workers. My feeling is that this attitude towards teachers is not just morally wrong, it’s sabotaging the education system. If we constantly attack teachers, we will miss out on generations of talented graduates who will not want to join a profession that is constantly derided. The talent pool will be shallow moving ahead in this complex world.

If our culture so richly rewards celebrities, actors, and sports stars, heaping praise and riches on them, why should not outstanding teachers be equally celebrated? The moniker “hero” is thrown around so haphazardly today that we often fail to see the true heroes standing right amongst us- and every teacher that I know has worn that proverbial hero’s cape more than once in some child’s life.

Teachers wear so many hats today in the classroom- they are educator, nurse, counselor, protector, facilitator, monitor…sometimes they provide the only love, structure and encouragement that a child gets. Teachers work countless hours and have sleepless nights with concerns about their student-children that they hold close in their hearts. They are as proud as a child’s parent when celebrating accomplishments and as devastated as a parent when a child is hurt in any way.

If you are still wondering why we should respect teachers- it is because they hold the future in their hands. There was a teacher behind every great inventor, every great philosopher, and every great idea in history. Fierce independent minds – from Nelson Mandela to Steve Jobs – have paid tribute to the influence of a teacher during their early years. Countless future leaders and society contributors will one day credit their teachers as well. If it’s your love of reading, your interest in space, your love of thought and debate- I know that there was a teacher in your past that sparked your interests and fed your self-worth to help make you the adult you are today.

As I look ahead to fiendishly complex challenges of the modern age – from climate change to frenetic technological change to global conflict- and now to the task of re-creating a post COVID world – I know it will require better ideas, and better teachers- now more than ever. Teachers need our respect and they need it every single day. This current generation is in a better place than most of us to reclaim the teaching profession…and they have a chance to remind us what once made teaching beautiful in a million different ways. We have to model that kind of respect for teaching in order for younger students to commit to the profession.

But with my measured optimism, I wrestle with fears that all levels of government will look to recover from the COVID-19 devastation on the backs of schools and teachers. I fear huge funding cuts requiring larger class sizes; I see the number of teachers presently in schools being downsized to save money; I have lived through prior economic downfalls where the first things cut are Kindergarten, sports, music, arts, languages, libraries, before and after school programs and services for children with special needs- all the very things that our children need and deserve.

The COVID pause also showed us the ugly reality that there is little or no equity in the field of education presently. If we choose to repair our economy on the backs of schools, teachers, and our children- this disparity of access to an equal education will simply grow larger- and that in my mind is completely unacceptable. We must demand of our elected officials that schools be fully funded. Our teaching professionals must be given the latitude to come back with ideas from the lessons learned during distance learning to a New Improved Normal for ALL children.

I grow deeply suspicious of governors and other elected officials, not for their call for change, but for implying that classroom instruction may no longer be relevant as a result of our diving into the deep end of distance learning and seeing that it may have select positive benefits for some children. Lessons of how technology can benefit children are wonderful insights, but any educator knows that the magic of learning happens in the face to face connection made between teachers and their students.

I would hope that a lesson learned during this pause is that we need to put more emphasis on educating the “whole child” and let our teachers ply their trade in new re-imagined ways with the support necessary to meet the needs and demands of today’s students. The classroom and the school culture, and the dynamic impact that has on a child’s learning and development cannot be replaced and mimicked in a virtual learning environment! It definitely cannot be substituted in a distance learning platform for children marginalized in any way or for students with special needs. If we return to the old normal or to a diminished emphasis and gutting of education, then the coronavirus taught us nothing about the education process and what is good for our children and our future.I can guarantee you that inequity in education will likely grow wider- and we must shout out loudly as our children’s advocates that it is simply unacceptable!!

We need to respect the teaching profession and teachers because teachers are the architects of the future. I have always believed that every child has two homes- the one they are born into, their biological home and the one they spend 5 ½ hours a day in- their school home. I take great solace in knowing that if for some reason a child’s biological home should fail her in any way- then Thank God that they have their school home providing them the structure, nurturing, learning, acceptance and love that all children deserve as a basic human right as they develop and grow.

Today more than at any other time in our history we must form a coalition of loud voices lead by teachers and including parents, advocates, researchers, academics and government officials to figure out a New Improved Normal for ALL children to return to!

There’s been a great deal of discussion recently about Australia’s teachers and the challenging workplace conditions they’re facing. This includes the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan , which has generated important conversations about teacher shortages.

One of the significant issues raised by our own research , and that of others , is that teachers aren’t feeling respected or appreciated for their work. But what does this mean, and what can be done to change it?

In May this year, we surveyed almost 5000 teachers across Australia to ask them about their working conditions. Their responses provided insights into the ways disrespect is impacting teaching across the country.

Overall, seven in 10 teachers don’t feel respected, and it has significant implications for teacher retention.

Policy and politicians

The expectations for teachers to account for their work have expanded in recent decades. Communicating students’ achievements is important, but the excessive requirements for teachers to collect and report data, then to justify the ways that they teach, can be demoralising.

A driver of this has been the narrow performance measures assessed by the NAPLAN program. NAPLAN was introduced in Australia in response to expansions of global testing programs such as PISA.

Excessive reporting and compliance requirements, as well as the narrowed curricula, have cascaded down from the standardised testing regime in this country and had concerning impacts .

These performance pressures find their way into policy development and the political discourse.

One example of this was seen in the lead-up to the recent Victorian state election. When promoting their proposed education policy, which included the introduction of a mandated phonics program aimed to improve literacy results, the opposition spokesman for education described the policy as “ending the era of guesswork”.

Comments like this imply teachers were not previously informed by experience, expertise, or ongoing professional development. Concerningly, this kind of language undermines teachers’ expertise and influences the public narrative.

This type of rhetoric has been abundant in Australia, and our study showed the impact – just one in 10 teachers felt politicians respected them.

Teachers are experts. They care about children and their learning. They’re professionals with deep knowledge and experience, but too often this isn’t reflected in policies, nor the associated political and media commentaries.

And to add insult to injury, while the use of “evidence-based” approaches are pushed heavily by policymakers , in Australia education research receives less than 1% of research funding .

From the newspaper to the classroom

Research has shown that teaching receives more negative media attention than other professions . These adverse sentiments work their way into the professional relationships that teachers navigate every day in their classrooms. Negativity about teacher quality translates into a lack of trust in teachers’ expertise.

Our research found that in 2022, seven out of 10 don’t feel respected or appreciated, despite the fact that in 2019, public opinion research suggested that there were high levels of respect for teachers, and a 2020 follow-up survey found this improved due to teachers’ responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This disconnect highlights a gap between what we think and how we behave.

Teachers have told us that one way that they feel disrespected is from the excessive monitoring of their work. The expectations for them to justify and explain their decisions about curriculum, teaching approaches and classroom management are high.

Alongside this, they report they’re frequently questioned, challenged, and even abused (including physically).

In our survey, teachers described such things as constant emails from parents, students’ disregard for expectations of behaviour and basic courtesy, and a sense of individual entitlement that compounds with the competition that’s inherent in our education systems.

As a society, most people agree we need to respect and appreciate teachers, but often this doesn’t seem to translate into action. In the bustle and rush of our lives, we engage less with school communities, and are less likely to notice or acknowledge the many, many positive experiences that most children have at school.

Why it’s important right now to increase the respect

The situation for teachers in Australia right now has far-reaching consequences. Teaching has just been added to the National Skills Commissions priority list , and teacher shortages are already having damaging effects on the education of children and young people.

Our research shows teacher retention will be a crucial ongoing issue, with seven in 10 teachers saying they plan to, or would like to, leave the profession. If we can make changes so that we don’t lose those currently considering leaving, and possibly also entice back some teachers who have already left, it might make a significant difference.

Everyone in the community should consider these issues as a wake-up call. We can all do more to respect and appreciate teachers.

A place to start is to recognise that teachers deserve to feel safe in their workplaces and valued for their expertise, and this needs to start with respect.

Let’s also remember that, ultimately, the working conditions our teachers are experiencing are the learning conditions of our children and young people. If we don’t improve the ways we respect teachers, their education may suffer.

We need to stop blaming teachers for failings that are out of their control. We need to trust them, and value their training and expertise. We need to believe they’re teachers because they care about our students and our communities.

We need to uphold basic expectations of safety and courtesy for our teachers, so they’re not exposed to disrespect and abuse that we wouldn’t accept elsewhere.

If we can do these things, we might help break down the constraints that stop teachers from embracing their innate passion and creativity. They’ll continue to improve their practice and do the best for their students, because it’s in their nature to do so.

These actions to enhance respect will result in more positive and productive relationships between teachers and students, as well as with colleagues, and parents.

These relationships are the foundations that will enhance students’ wellbeing as well as their educational achievement – and will ultimately strengthen our society.

5 Ways to Respect and Support Teachers

This is the week we take time to acknowledge the incredible contributions of our teachers to our country. Their dedication and commitment leads to every great achievement in our nation.

Our teachers have never faced more demanding challenges. At the same time their students’ needs continue to grow, teachers face ever-tougher expectations from their states, school systems, and schools. The many demands on teachers include newly adopted career- and college-ready standards, new student assessments, new teacher evaluation requirements, and emerging technologies.

Here I outline five actions that systems can take to demonstrate their respect and support for educators, support them on their journeys to achieve excellence, and encourage them to see the learning profession as one worthy of a lifetime commitment.

Give teachers the feedback and support they need to increase their effectiveness. Too many teachers spend years in the profession without receiving feedback on their performance or help with their problems. Teachers need school systems to create the structures and invest in the people who will provide teachers with the feedback and support they need to improve their practice on a daily basis. Systems can choose to make this a fundamental part of their employment compact, and teachers can choose to work in places where the support is nonnegotiable.

Give teachers access to colleagues who share the responsibility for the success of a select group of students. No teacher should have to turn far to find support with his or her immediate problems of practice. Just as in higher-performing countries, teachers need to be assigned to learning teams with clear expectations that they share responsibility for a designated group of students.

Give teachers time during the work day to collaborate, problem solve, and learn with colleagues . Teachers should not be expected to learn only on their own time. While some learning may take place beyond the work day, substantive time and support should be scheduled within every teacher contract to acknowledge that learning is a core responsibility of every educator.

Give teachers time to implement new initiatives with accuracy and fidelity. The teachers I know are eager to learn new skills and apply new technologies that have potential to help their students achieve more. They are committed to the promise of higher standards. They are eager to introduce new curriculum and write new lessons that engage their students in deeper learning. They also know their efforts may not work as intended the first time around. They want time to improve their craft and get implementation right. When systems connect new standards to high- stakes immediately, teachers’ efforts to innovate are stifled, their willingness to learn from mistakes is compromised, and returning to old practices is safer. Let’s give teachers the time they need to implement new practices in an atmosphere of appreciation, recognition, and support — as opposed to fear, punitive accountability, and shame.

Make the teaching and learning profession attractive to those willing to make a lifetime commitment. This year I celebrate more than 40 years in the learning profession. I was fortunate; I paved a path that gave me countless opportunities to develop and exercise leadership skills. While I moved away from the classroom, I still ensured I would interact with teachers on a regular basis. We need many more pathways that give teachers opportunities to lead and at the same time continue to serve students. Many teacher surveys and the growth of teacher leadership initiatives demonstrate that teachers want to teach and serve the profession simultaneously. Organizations outside school systems shouldn’t be the only ones creating these options; rather, such pathways should be a fundamental part of how each district supports its work force.

There used to be a very sacred relationship in ancient times between teacher and the student. There are so many stories written in our scriptures . Out of all those, the sacrifice made by Ekalavya for Dronacharya is one which shows the relationship between teacher and a student.

The relationship between the teacher and a student is lacking in recent times. Nowadays it is considered as just a profession. It has become a source of income or a business when compared to the past. We should be conscious enough not to stain such a noble profession and should not create an example which will break people's trust in teachers.

Success of a Teacher

Every teacher's aim is to teach his or her student. By some teachers we gain knowledge, by some we gain ethics and by some we gain practical knowledge. But everywhere and at any time the success of a teacher is that they get only when their student reaches great heights in the right way.Hardwork is the key to being a good teacher. Unity in heart, without any discrimination towards any one will make you a good teacher.

Importance of Teacher

Every student's life has a teacher who serves as a support system. Since not all students have the same abilities, a teacher must teach in a way that a sufficient number of students can understand. They educate us about time management and its limitations.

Inspiration

When a child is questioned about what they want to be when they grow up. In addition to being a police officer, doctor, or lawyer, some of them will declare that teaching is their true calling. Therefore, a teacher is a person who many look up to and emulate.

Last but not least, teaching is a responsibility to mould the brains of many young people, not merely a way to make money. I have a great respect for all the teachers in my life who have had and will continue to have a big impact. How to Build Strong, Trusting Student-Teacher Relationships

Sometimes we forget where many of these students come from and the situations that they deal with on a daily basis. School should be a safe haven and kids should trust all of their administrators, teachers, and staff members. Every kid is different and these differences should be embraced. If all kids were the same our jobs would be boring. It is important to realize that there are tremendous differences between each individual student and with each individual class. A 3rd grader cannot handle what a 6th grader can handle and so on.

Try to have patience and understanding when dealing with a student. Before you say anything, take a deep breath, think about your response, and choose your words carefully. Your tone matters as much as what you say.

We expect our students to be respectful to us and we should, in turn, be respectful to them at all times. This isn’t always easy, but you must always handle interactions with students in a positive manner. You should never berate or embarrass a student. It is best to address them separately from the class. The key is to talk to them, not down to them.

Kids are going to make mistakes. It would be ignorant to think that they won’t. You are setting yourself and them up for failure if you do. There is a difference between having high expectations and having unrealistic expectations. Preconceived notions can and will destroy a relationship with a student. Everyone deserves a second chance. What public k-12 teachers want americans to know about teaching.

At a time when most teachers are feeling stressed and overwhelmed in their jobs, we asked 2,531 public K-12 teachers this open-ended question:

If there’s one thing you’d want the public to know about teachers, what would it be?

We also asked Americans what they think about teachers to compare with teachers’ perceptions of how the public views them.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to better understand what public K-12 teachers would like Americans to know about their profession. We also wanted to learn how the public thinks about teachers.

For the open-end question, we surveyed 2,531 U.S. public K-12 teachers from Oct. 17 to Nov. 14, 2023. The teachers surveyed are members of RAND’s American Teacher Panel, a nationally representative panel of public K-12 school teachers recruited through MDR Education. Survey data is weighted to state and national teacher characteristics to account for differences in sampling and response to ensure they are representative of the target population.

Overall, 96% of surveyed teachers provided an answer to the open-ended question. Center researchers developed a coding scheme categorizing the responses, coded all responses, and then grouped them into the six themes explored in the data essay.

For the questions for the general public, we surveyed 5,029 U.S. adults from Nov. 9 to Nov. 16, 2023. The adults surveyed are members of the Ipsos KnowledgePanel, a nationally representative online survey panel. Panel members are randomly recruited through probability-based sampling, and households are provided with access to the Internet and hardware if needed. To ensure that the results of this survey reflect a balanced cross section of the nation, the data is weighted to match the U.S. adult population by gender, age, education, race and ethnicity and other categories.

Here are the questions used for this analysis , along with responses, the teacher survey methodology and the general public survey methodology .

Most of the responses to the open-ended question fell into one of these six themes:

Teaching is a hard job

About half of teachers (51%) said they want the public to know that teaching is a difficult job and that teachers are hardworking. Within this share, many mentioned that they have roles and responsibilities in the classroom besides teaching, which makes the job stressful. Many also talked about working long hours, beyond those they’re contracted for.

“Teachers serve multiple roles other than being responsible for teaching curriculum. We are counselors, behavioral specialists and parents for students who need us to fill those roles. We sacrifice a lot to give all of ourselves to the role as teacher.”

“The amount of extra hours that teachers have to put in beyond the contractual time is ridiculous. Arriving 30 minutes before and leaving an hour after is just the tip of the iceberg. … And as far as ‘having summers off,’ most of August is taken up with preparing materials for the upcoming school year or attending three, four, seven days’ worth of unpaid development training.”

Teachers care about their students

The next most common theme: 22% of teachers brought up how fulfilling teaching is and how much teachers care about their students. Many gave examples of the hardships of teaching but reaffirmed that they do their job because they love the kids and helping them succeed.

“We are passionate about what we do. Every child we teach is important to us and we look out for them like they are our own.”

Teachers are undervalued and disrespected

Some 17% of teachers want the public to know that they feel undervalued and disrespected, and that they need more public support. Some mentioned that they are well-educated professionals but are not treated as such. And many teachers in this category responded with a general plea for support from the public, which they don’t feel they’re getting now.

“We feel undervalued. The public and many parents of my students treat me and my peers as if we do not know as much as they do, as if we are uneducated.”

“The public attitudes toward teachers have been degrading, and it is making it impossible for well-qualified teachers to be found. People are simply not wanting to go into the profession because of public sentiments.”

Teachers are underpaid

A similar share of teachers (15%) want the public to know that teachers are underpaid. Many teachers said their salary doesn’t account for the effort and care they put into their students’ education and believe that their pay should reflect this.

“We are sorely underpaid for the amount of hours we work and the education level we have attained.”

Teachers need support and resources from government and administrators

About one-in-ten teachers (9%) said they need more support from the government, their administrators and other key stakeholders. Many mentioned working in understaffed schools, not having enough funding and paying for supplies out of pocket. Some teachers also expressed that they have little control over the curriculum that they teach.

“The world-class education we used to be proud of does not exist because of all the red tape we are constantly navigating. If you want to see real change in the classroom, advocate for smaller class sizes for your child, push your district to cap class sizes at a reasonable level and have real, authentic conversations with your child’s teacher about what is going on in the classroom if you’re curious.”

Teachers need more support from parents

Roughly the same share of teachers (8%) want the public to know that teachers need more support from parents, emphasizing that the parent-teacher relationship is strained. Many view parents as partners in their child’s education and believe that a strong relationship improves kids’ overall social and emotional development.

“Teachers help students to reach their potential. However, that job is near impossible if parents/guardians do not take an active part in their student’s education.”

How the U.S. public views teachers

While the top response from teachers in the open-ended question is that they want the public to know that teaching is a hard job, most Americans already see it that way. Two-thirds of U.S. adults say being a public K-12 teacher is harder than most other jobs, with 33% saying it’s a lot harder.

And about three-quarters of Americans (74%) say teachers should be paid more than they are now, including 39% who say teachers should be paid a lot more.

Americans are about evenly divided on whether the public generally looks up to (32%) or down on (30%) public K-12 teachers. Some 37% say Americans neither look up to or down on public K-12 teachers.

In addition to the open-ended question about what they want the public to know about them, we asked teachers how much they think most Americans trust public K-12 teachers to do their job well. We also asked the public how much they trust teachers. Answers differ considerably.

Nearly half of public K-12 teachers (47%) say most Americans don’t trust teachers much or at all. A third say most Americans trust teachers some, and 18% say the public trusts teachers a great deal or a fair amount.

In contrast, a majority of Americans (57%) say they do trust public K-12 teachers to do their job well a great deal or a fair amount. About a quarter (26%) say they trust teachers some, and 17% say they don’t trust teachers much or at all.

How the public’s views differ by party

There are sizable party differences in Americans’ views of teachers. In particular, Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents are more likely than Republicans and Republican leaners to say:

They trust teachers to do their job well a great deal or a fair amount (70% vs. 44%)
Teaching is a lot or somewhat harder when compared with most other jobs (77% vs. 59%)
Teachers should be paid a lot or somewhat more than they are now (86% vs. 63%)

She shows her students the feedback from ChatGPT and how the tool rewrote their essay. “I’ll share what I think about their intro, too, and we’ll talk about it,” she said.

Gayeski requires her class of 15 students to do the same: run their draft through ChatGPT to see where they can make improvements.

The emergence of AI is reshaping education, presenting real benefits, such as automating some tasks to free up time for more personalized instruction, but also some big hazards, from issues around accuracy and plagiarism to maintaining integrity.

Both teachers and students are using the new technology. A report by strategy consultant firm Tyton Partners, sponsored by plagiarism detection platform Turnitin, found half of college students used AI tools in Fall 2023. Meanwhile, while fewer faculty members used AI, the percentage grew to 22% of faculty members in the fall of 2023, up from 9% in spring 2023.

Teachers are turning to AI tools and platforms — such as ChatGPT, Writable, Grammarly and EssayGrader — to assist with grading papers, writing feedback, developing lesson plans and creating assignments. They’re also using the burgeoning tools to create quizzes, polls, videos and interactives to up the ante” for what’s expected in the classroom.

Students, on the other hand, are leaning on tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft CoPilot — which is built into Word, PowerPoint and other products.

But while some schools have formed policies on how students can or can’t use AI for schoolwork, many do not have guidelines for teachers. The practice of using AI for writing feedback or grading assignments also raises ethical considerations. And parents and students who are already spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on tuition may wonder if an endless feedback loop of AI-generated and AI-graded content in college is worth the time and money.

“If teachers use it solely to grade, and the students are using it solely to produce a final product, it’s not going to work,” said Gayeski.

The time and place for AI

How teachers use AI depends on many factors, particularly when it comes to grading, according to Dorothy Leidner, a professor of business ethics at the University of Virginia. If the material being tested in a large class is largely declarative knowledge — so there is a clear right and wrong — then a teacher grading using the AI “might be even superior to human grading,” she told CNN.

AI would allow teachers to grade papers faster and more consistently and avoid fatigue or boredom, she said.

But Leidner noted when it comes to smaller classes or assignments with less definitive answers, grading should remain personalized so teachers can provide more specific feedback and get to know a student’s work, and, therefore, progress over time.

“A teacher should be responsible for grading but can give some responsibility to the AI,” she said.

She suggested teachers use AI to look at certain metrics — such as structure, language use and grammar — and give a numerical score on those figures. But teachers should then grade students’ work themselves when looking for novelty, creativity and depth of insight.

Leslie Layne teaches her students how to best use ChatGPT but takes issue with how some educators are using it to grade papers.

Leslie Layne, who has been teaching ChatGPT best practices in her writing workshop at the University of Lynchburg in Virginia, said she sees the advantages for teachers but also sees drawbacks.

“Using feedback that is not truly from me seems like it is shortchanging that relationship a little,” she said.

She also sees uploading a student’s work to ChatGPT as a “huge ethical consideration” and potentially a breach of their intellectual property. AI tools like ChatGPT use such entries to train their algorithms on everything from patterns of speech to how to make sentences to facts and figures.

Ethics professor Leidner agreed, saying this should particularly be avoided for doctoral dissertations and master’s theses because the student might hope to publish the work.

“It would not be right to upload the material into the AI without making the students aware of this in advance,” she said. “And maybe students should need to provide consent.”

Some teachers are leaning on software called Writable that uses ChatGPT to help grade papers but is “tokenized,” so essays do not include any personal information, and it’s not shared directly with the system.

Teachers upload essays to the platform, which was recently acquired by education company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, which then provides suggested feedback for students.

Other educators are using platforms such as  Turnitin  that boast plagiarism detection tools to help teachers identify when assignments are written by ChatGPT and other AI. But these types of detection tools are far from foolproof; OpenAI shut down its own AI-detection tool last year due to what the company called a “low rate of accuracy.”

Setting standards

Some schools are actively working on policies for both teachers and students. Alan Reid, a research associate in the Center for Research and Reform in Education (CRRE) at Johns Hopkins University, said he recently spent time working with K-12 educators who use GPT tools to create end-of-quarter personalized comments on report cards.

But like Layne, he acknowledged the technology’s ability to write insightful feedback remains “limited.”

He currently sits on a committee at his college that’s authoring an AI policy for faculty and staff; discussions are ongoing, not just for how teachers use AI in the classroom but how it’s used by educators in general.

He acknowledges schools are having conversations about using generative AI tools to create things like promotion and tenure files, performance reviews, and job postings.”

Nicolas Frank, an associate professor of philosophy at University of Lynchburg, said universities and professors need to be on the same page when it comes to policies but need to stay cautious .

“There is a lot of danger in making policies about AI at this stage,” he said.

He worries it’s still too early to understand how AI will be integrated into everyday life. He is also concerned that some administrators who don’t teach in classrooms may craft policy that misses nuances of instruction.

“That may create a danger of oversimplifying the problems with AI use in grading and instruction,” he said. “Oversimplification is how bad policy is made.”

To start, he said educators can identify clear abuses of AI and begin policy-making around those.

Leidner, meanwhile, said universities can be very high level with their guidance, such as making transparency a priority — so students have a right to know when AI is being used to grade their work — and identifying what types of information should never be uploaded into an AI or asked of an AI.

But she said universities must also be open to “regularly reevaluating as the technology and uses evolve.”

The Nebraska substitute teacher caught naked in a car with a teenage student appeared in court for the first time Tuesday.

Erin Ward, 45, admitted to having sex with a 17-year-old student at Burke High School where she worked, according to cops.

In court she was officially charged with felony sexual abuse by a school employee and ordered held on $25,000 bond, according to KETV Omaha .

Ward faces up to 20 years in prison if she’s convicted.

Ward was able to dodge statutory rape charges because the teen was above the Nebraska age of consent, which is 16.

If Ward posts bond, she will not be allowed to have any contact with the victim or any other minor, according to local channel WOWT .

Douglas County sheriff’s deputies arrested Ward early Saturday after finding her allegedly fooling around with the teenage boy in the family car, a Honda sedan.

Ward is a mom of three kids and is also married to Harvard-educated, high-ranking federal government employee Doug Ward, according to records and social media accounts.

Her husband has served with the Pentagon’s US Strategic Command for nearly two decades, according to his LinkedIn page.

Deputies arrived at the scene in response to a call about a suspicious parked vehicle at 3 a.m. on April 13.

When they looked inside the car, deputies spotted a naked Ward with a partially clothed teen.

The teen quickly moved to the driver’s seat and drove off before crashing just two blocks away.

He then fled by foot.

He was later found hiding in a yard wearing only a T-shirt and underwear.

Ward, who stayed in the car, allegedly confessed to deputies to sleeping with the boy.

Authorities also found her Omaha Public Schools ID on her. She is said to be a substitute teacher at Burke High School as well as various other schools in the Omaha area.

She Survived Being Shot By Her Ex—Now She's Spending Her Career Teaching Men How To Embrace Respectful Manhood

Kimya Motley married who she thought was the man of her dreams.

After a string of unhealthy relationships, she felt she’d finally got it right. But within a year of their marriage, her husband started being financially, physically, and spiritually abusive toward Motley and her two children.

“My faith is very important to me, so he used it against me,” Motley tells ESSENCE.

She said he told her that a part of her identity as a marital partner is to be submissive —that acquiescing to him was a sign of her love for him as a good wife. But what she realized was this was a form of covert manipulation that soon became undeniable.

After the first few hits, she tried to file a restraining order, but he convinced her to take him back, claiming he’d do better for his family. But like many other domestic violence cases, that was an empty promise and it lead to a near fatal ending.

“After the constant threats and physical violence continued, I told him I wanted a divorce—and honestly, that’s the number one thing you cannot do when you’re an abused woman,” Motley explains. “It should be like Harriet Tubman in the underground railroad—you’ve got to get out in silence, in secret, and with some help to hide the trail.”

During the process of leaving her husband, Motley learned this lesson in the worst possible way.

“I put my daughter in the car early in the morning on September 20th, 2011 to take her to daycare,” Motley recounts. “He ambushed us in the parking lot, but I didn’t recognize that he was even out there because he had stolen his mother’s car so he could cloak himself.”

Motley explains that while fixing her daughter’s shoes, she wasn’t paying attention to her surroundings. He took the opportunity and stealthily walked up behind her.

“And he shot me in my face at close range—the bullet entered through one cheek and exited on the other, depositing in her car door.”

He went on to shoot her again in the neck. She heard the bones crush in her face as she fell to the ground. Looking up at him, Motley yelled no, no, no, no, no . He shot her in the back of the head. Shocked she was still alive, the only thought that ran through her head was to reassure her daughter that she was ok.

“Mommy’s alrig–…” Her words suspended in air when she saw her daughters’ limp little body; she was shot as well. Next to her was lain the shoe she was adjusting moments before the their lives were altered forever.

“Now, I could go on with that part of the story, but I won’t because the bottom line is God gets the glory. We both lived through that incident. Despite my daughter having to learn how to walk, talk, feed herself, read, write everything all over again, she’s still here and I am too. We’re here to tell our tale.”

Motley’s story echoes that of some 40% of Black women who will experience intimate partner violence in their lifetimes.

Motley is well aware of the pervasiveness of this issue, that’s why she’s using her harrowing story as a testament to educate others on not only overcoming domestic violence, but harnessing the tools needed to help uproot harmful societal ideologies that breed abusers.

Motley is now the chief communications officer for A Call to Men (ACTM), a Black-led nonprofit organization focused on transforming society by promoting healthy manhood through trainings and educational resources for companies, government agencies, schools, and community groups. Motley joined ACTM in 2021 after undergoing a self-educating journey where learned what abuse really looked like.

“Like many women, I had no idea I was being abused until it was almost too late. And then by the time I recognized it and started telling people about my {now} ex-husband, they did nothing. I told folks, the men in his life, authority figures, and they ignored it.”

This isn’t atypical.

Data shows that courts reject 81% of mothers’ allegations of child sexual abuse, 79% of their allegations of child physical abuse, and 57% of their allegations of partner abuse. In a separate 2021 report released by the National Hotline Of Domestic Abuse, approximately 82% of survivors had contacted police about intimate partner violence or sexual assault and 12% did not. Both groups shared concerns about turning to the police for assistance and were also concerned about contacting them in the future the report states.

“I made it my life’s work to try and upend this system of abuse in the home and at work,” Motley says, underscoring that abuse touch various areas of life, including the workplace. Microaggressive behaviors, sexual harassment and other harmful barriers to effective communication is addressed in ACTM’s targeted workshops and trainings including Circle of Accountability – An Affinity Group for White Men and Thinking Outside the Man Box — Innovative Ways to Engage Men

To date, ACTM has worked to spread education on respectful manhood through partnerships with a wide breadth of organizations including the National Football League, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, Uber, Deloitte, Harry’s, J.P. Morgan, the United States Military, the U.S. Department of Justice, the United Nations, and colleges and universities across the country.

At its core, Motley says the organization is not about condemnation, but providing tangible resources for promoting respectful interactions and relationship building between men and women, girls, LGBQ, Trans, and nonbinary people.

“It starts with self respect,” she says. “When I see the way these men show up every day to stand alongside me and other women to say, not on our watch, {to disrespect displayed by males}, it’s so inspiring. It heals the little girl in me, the little girl that saw my father beating my mom, the little girl that was being sexually assaulted. It heals that part of me to work alongside them to end this violence.”

NPR editor Uri Berliner resigns after bombshell expose reveals network’s pervasive left-wing bias

U ri Berliner, the veteran editor and reporter for National Public Radio who was suspended without pay after publishing a lengthy essay denouncing the outlet’s liberal bias, has resigned from the broadcaster.

“I am resigning from NPR, a great American institution where I have worked for 25 years,” Berliner wrote on his X social media account on Wednesday.

“I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism.”

Berliner wrote that he “cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems at NPR I cite in my Free Press essay.”

Berliner was referring to Katherine Maher, the chief executive at NPR who has come under fire for a series of “woke” social media posts in which she criticized Hillary Clinton for using the term “boy” and “girl” because it was “erasing language for non-binary people.”

Maher also appeared to justify looting In 2020 during the Black Lives Matter protests, saying it was “hard to be mad” about the destruction. In 2018, she wrote a post denouncing then-President Donald Trump as a “racist” before deleting it.

On Tuesday, NPR spokeswoman Isabel Lara said in a statement that Maher “was not working in journalism at the time and was exercising her First Amendment right to express herself like any other American citizen.”

Berliner, a Peabody Award-winning journalist, called out journalistic blind spots around major news events, including the origins of COVID-19, the war in Gaza and the Hunter Biden laptop, in an essay published last Tuesday on Bari Weiss’ online news site the Free Press.

In Berliner’s essay — titled “I’ve Been at NPR for 25 years. Here’s How We Lost America’s Trust” — Berliner said that among editorial staff at NPR’s Washington, DC, headquarters, he counted 87 registered Democrats and no Republicans.

He wrote that he presented these findings to his colleagues at a May 2021 all-hands editorial staff meeting.

“When I suggested we had a diversity problem with a score of 87 Democrats and zero Republicans, the response wasn’t hostile,” Berliner wrote. “It was worse. It was met with profound indifference.”

Maher, who took up the role as CEO of NPR in late March, responded to Berliner’s essay by claiming that the veteran journalist was being “profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning” to his colleagues.

She accused Berliner of “questioning whether our people are serving our mission with integrity … based on little more than the recognition of their identity.”

Berliner also called out his bosses at NPR for their refusal to seriously cover the laptop story — which was exclusively broken by The Post.

The laptop contained emails showing that the son of President Biden was engaged in influence-peddling overseas — though NPR and other media outlets declined to aggressively cover the story in the run-up to the 2020 presidential election.

According to Berliner, senior editors at NPR feared that devoting airtime to the story would help Trump’s re-election chances just weeks before voters cast their ballots.

Berliner wrote that NPR had deteriorated into “an openly polemical news outlet serving a niche audience.”

“The laptop was newsworthy,” Berliner wrote. “But the timeless journalistic instinct of following a hot story lead was being squelched.”

Berliner also accused NPR of giving disproportionately more attention to allegations that Trump was colluding with the Russian government to win the 2016 presidential election — only to devote far less resources to Robert Mueller’s findings that there was insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges.

After the contents of the laptop proved to be authentic, NPR “could have fessed up to our misjudgment,” Berliner wrote.

“But, like Russia collusion [allegations against Trump that were debunked], we didn’t make the hard choice of transparency.”

Berliner also called out NPR for pushing other left-leaning causes, such as subjecting staffers to “unconscious bias training sessions” in the wake of the May 2020 death of George Floyd.

Employees were ordered to “start talking about race,” he said.

NPR journalists were also told to “keep up to date with current language and style guidance from journalism affinity groups” that were based on racial and ethnic identity, including “Marginalized Genders and Intersex People of Color” (MGIPOC), “NPR Noir” (black employees at NPR) and “Women, Gender-Expansive, and Transgender People in Technology Throughout Public Media.”

According to Berliner, if an NPR journalist’s language “differs from the diktats of those groups,” a “DEI Accountability Committee” would settle the dispute.
