Haunted (3D): Movie Review

Visual Stories

I’m going to take a little break from the American and English traditions of haunted house fiction. For now it’s “Goodbye Hollywood and Hello Bollywood!”  But let me be frank. I’m not very familiar with Bollywood films. Just to prove my ignorance, I’m not even sure if Haunted – 3D  by Vikram Bhatt is a “Bollywood” film. I had once assumed all Hindi Language films from India were part of the Bollywood scene, but this is not so. According to wikipedia, Bollywood  is one of many film production companies in India. Bollywood or no Bollywood, Haunted – 3D is part of a genre known as the Indian ghost movie .

Popular not only in India, Indian ghost movies are well liked in the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia. How about the U.S?  Well, wikipedia doesn’t list the United States as being a treasure trove for such films. I’m only going by what the friendly folks of this online encyclopedia say.  If true, maybe all that will change once my fellow Americans discover this article.  Millions of Americans will see this blog post and decide “Hey! Maybe I should give these films a chance!”  Ha! I can only wish for that many page hits. I found this film on youtube. I’m guessing that if there were to be a place on the Internet capable of making Indian ghost stories available to Americans, it would be youtube.com

When I think of Indian films, I think of music. I think of dancing. Singing and dancing is what I would always see when I would flip through the TV channels on a Saturday afternoon and stop on a Hindi language program. Should it then be surprising to encounter singing and dancing in a horror movie?  There is plenty of music in Haunted-3D. These are love songs – pop songs.  There is one dancing scene as well but it is done in humor.  See, this film is as much of a love story as it is a ghost story.  This fusion is not uncommon in Indian ghost stories. In fact, romance is at the heart of the gothic tradition, especially the stories written in the 18 th century.

I’d like to close this review on a good note. The special effects in this film are awesome. They’re done with style; they didn’t over do it.  Ghosts materialize; evil spirits possess the body – kudos to these creepy scenes.  The best is when an evil spirit chases a couple through a forest. The spirit runs in midair! It’s as if there was an invisible platform far above the couple’s heads.  This did not look cheesy.  Instead, the chase appears so damn real!  Bizarre I’ll grant you, but nevertheless – real.

Movie Review: Haunted 3D

Vikram Bhatt's fascination for horror continues, even as the Indian film industry -- and the desi viewer -- desperately awaits the first authentic bone-chiller from Bollywood. Is Haunted the answer to the chill hunters' prayers? Not completely. And that's because the story is dog-eared and done-to-death. Almost every horror film has the wailing ghost of a nubile young maiden who sends outs desperate SOSs to anyone who dares to enter her domain. And don't we know why she's wailing! Still, we won't reveal the secret, which in any case, is hardly a secret.... But if the film works -- and it works quite well -- is only because of the special effects of the film. Experiencing the horror in 3D is indeed a novel experience for the viewer, specially since it is smartly done. Each time the ghosts lunge out at you, stick out their tongue or flail their limbs, you jump back in your seat. And yes, there are a lot of ghosts, performing a lot of ghastly acrobatics. There's even a snake sticking out its venom at you and a hurtling brick, almost missing your nose....Great fun. Other than that, there is the scenic beauty (Pravin Bhatt's cinematography), a hummable music score (Chirantan Bhatt) and the eye for detail (the film moves back and forth in time) which keeps the hours ticking. Performance-wise, the director has opted for a bunch of new actors to pitch in as the lead pair. Sadly, there's nothing extraordinary about them and they hardly leave an impact. It's the veterans, like Achint Kaur and Arif Zakaria who end up giving you the goosebumps. And they do it in adequate measure. Want to scream? Watch Haunted.

All about the movie: With Haunted 3D , Vikram Bhatt once again explores the unexplainable and scarcely chartered domain of horror as he had with his previous ventures like Raaz , 1920 and Shaapit . Small screen actress Tia Bajpai makes her big screen debut with this film. She has done playback singing for a song in the movie. The movie also re-launches Mimoh (Mahakshay Chakraborty), son of the great Indian disco dancer, Mithun Chakraborty.

Business rating : 2.5 stars

Star cast : Mahakshay Chakraborty, Tia Bajpai, Achint Kaur, Arif Zakaria.

What’s Good : The 3D effects; some horror scenes.

What’s Bad : The lack of emotional appeal in the story; the length of the film.

Verdict : ‘Haunted’ will score because of its 3D version.

ASA Productions & Enterprises Pvt. Ltd., Dar Motion Pictures and BVG Films’ Haunted ( A ) is a horror film made in 3D. Set in Dalhousie, it revolves around the sprawling Glen Manor, a mansion with a past which haunts the present.

Rehan (Mahakshay Chakraborty) visits Glen Manor to complete its sale initiated by his father. But he soon realises that the house is haunted. Strange things happen and he hears the cries of a young woman in the house. He probes further and gets to the root of the secret past.

Meera (Tia Bajpai) used to live in the mansion with her family. Her parents had gone out of Dalhousie and so, she was alone with the attendants of the house. She used to learn to play the piano but the piano teacher (Arif Zakaria) tried to act fresh with her one day. In a fit of rage, Meera had unwittingly murdered the teacher while trying to resist his rape attempt. The teacher’s ghost then tried to rape her and terrify her. The ghost even murdered all the others in Tia’s house, including her caretaker, Margaret (Achint Kaur). Left all alone to fend for herself, Tia had committed suicide.

Rehan learns that he can free Tia’s spirit, which haunts the mansion, by saving her in her lifetime. In other words, he has to save her from the rapist and not let her die. While he sets out to do the impossible, he realises that the piano teacher’s ghost has entered Margaret’s body so that it appears as if Margaret’s ghost is troubling Tia.

Does Rehan succeed in his mission? Is he able to save Tia from being raped? Is he able to prevent her from ending her life? The film’s climax answers these questions.

Haunted Review – Story & Screenplay

Amin Hajee’s story is quite confusing as the audience is unable to understand how a man can save a dead woman. In other words, the very novelty of the subject is its most confusing part. Even if the audience would reconcile itself to the fact that it is possible for Rehan to save the dead woman, Hajee’s screenplay gets long-winding and repetitive in the second half. The climax, especially, is just too long.

Perhaps, the biggest drawback of the screenplay – in the context of the Indian viewer – is that Rehan is not saving Meera because he loves or loved her. That is to say, he is not trying to save his love. In fact, he doesn’t even know the lady he is supposed to save as he has never met her. While one way of looking at this is that he is a selfless guy, the Indian viewer is bound to feel that Rehan’s actions would’ve been worth their while if they were used to save his own love.

The film’s first half is quite interesting but the same can’t be said of the post-interval portion. The emotional appeal of the drama is almost nil because there is no connection between Rehan and Meera. However, the aforementioned drawbacks of the script pale into insignificance when compared to the 3D effects which are superb.

Haunted Review – Performances

Mahakshay Chakraborty does an average job. He needs to concentrate more on his facial expressions so that they don’t look similar in the different scenes. His dubbing (by Vikram Bhatt) is good. Tia Bajpai makes an ordinary debut. She looks fair but needs to improve on her acting. It must be mentioned here that scenes of Mahakshay running and of Tia screaming are so many that it appears as if that’s all the two are doing in the film! Achint Kaur is effective. Arif Zakaria also does a fine job. Mohan Kapur has a very brief role but he performs ably. Sanjay Sharma is okay. Krishna Bhatt is good.

Haunted Review – Direction

Vikram Bhatt has done a neat and impressive job of the three-dimensional shooting because the 3D effects are visually appealing. But his direction, limited as it is by the script, is not of the kind which can hold the audience’s interest throughout the drama and make an emotional impact on the viewers. There are scenes that chill and thrill but they are few and, more importantly, they aren’t novel. Computer graphics are of a very  good standard. Pravin Bhatt’s cinematography is very nice. Action scenes, choreographed by Abbas Ali Moghul, are okay.

Chirantan Bhatt’s music is alright but the songs haven’t been popularised. Also, the haunting element in the music is missing. Lyrics (by Shakeel Azmi and Junaid Wasi) are ordinary. Technically, a superior product. Production values are alright.

Haunted Review – Komal Nahta’s Verdict

On the whole, Haunted is an ordinary fare with excellent 3D effects. It will do very good business in cinemas showing it in the 3D version but its 2D version will not do half as well.

Haunted – 3D is a 2011 Indian horror film directed by Vikram Bhatt and starring Mahakshay Chakraborty, Twinkle Bajpai, Achint Kaur, Sagar Saikia and Arif Zakaria. The film is India’s first stereoscopic 3D horror film. The promos and first look of the film were released on 7 February 2011. For the most part Bhatt exploits the 3D to make things jump out at you, and while it’s not as much as fun as the last 'Final Destination' movie, there are moments that will make you leap in your seat.

The only new thing about `Haunted’ is that it is Bollywood horror in 3 D. The rest of it, by which we mean the principal stuff that makes it a film—story, location, characters—are all same old same old.But adding a third dimension alone does not a film make, especially if it tries lifting dull content and new actors with scant screen presence.You are left feeling grateful for the couple of creepy moments the film manages, before sinking into sameness again.

Haunted evidently wants to be the Wanted (Salman Khan small-town super hit) for the same crowd. You just hope they aren’t similarly disappointed by technical glitches.

Haunted fails at reviving the age old haunted-house premise, bringing nothing new to the platter. The horror fans who thrive on Hiss and Click, or the Mimoh fans might just be able to sit through this film. The others should give it a miss.

Formulaic horror tropes – mist, screeching doors, books that fall by themselves and blaring background music that insists that you be scared.

This certainly is one of those old 'spirits' in new bottle!

On the whole, Haunted is an ordinary fare with excellent 3D effects. It will do very good business in cinemas showing it in the 3D version but its 2D version will not do half as well.

On the whole, HAUNTED is for today's movie savvy audience. It succeeds in keeping you tense and edgy, as a true poltergeist/horror flick should. There are scenes and situations aplenty to shock and astound the viewer coupled with the 3D effects, the prosthetics, the background score, an absorbing screenplay and deft handling of the subject material. It is these superior factors that outweigh the blemishes and make it an interesting cinematic experience. Go, get spooked!

Well, if you don't find the IPL chilling and thrilling then get 'HAUNTED'.

How do you not laugh when the horror film you’re meant to be watching, unexpectedly turns into a comedy?.For the most part Bhatt exploits the 3D to make things jump out at you, and while it’s not as much as fun as the last Final Destination movie, there are moments that will make you leap in your seat.I’m going with two out of five for director Vikram Bhatt’s Haunted . You’ll be laughing hard for hours after you’ve watched this film. Not what you expect from horror, is it?

Is Haunted the answer to the chill hunters’ prayers? Not completely. And that’s because the story is dog-eared and done-to-death. But if the film works — and it works quite well — is only because of the special effects of the film. Experiencing the horror in 3D is indeed a novel experience for the viewer, specially since it is smartly done. Each time the ghosts lunge out at you, stick out their tongue or flail their limbs, you jump back in your seat. And yes, there are a lot of ghosts, performing a lot of ghastly acrobatics. There’s even a snake sticking out its venom at you and a hurtling brick, almost missing your nose….Great fun. Want to scream? Watch Haunted.

Of course Bhatt can’t be bothered with minor details like this. Instead he creates an absolutely ridiculous horror movie that works better as comedy, unintentional of course.Vikram uses formulaic horror tropes – mist, screeching doors, books that fall by themselves and blaring background music that insists that you be scared. I was trying not to laugh out loud. I’m going with one and a half star.

And here’s the thing about good horror films: they’re either brilliantly bloodcurdling, or conveniently comic. Either way, it’s entertaining. But Haunted adds a third dimension to this classification. It’s annoying. There’s no subtle way of saying this, really, so here it is: nothing in this film works. Not the story, not the acting, not the music and certainly not the 3D. Haunted is a total downer, and the title of “India’s first stereoscopic 3D film” certainly deserved a much better movie to go along with it.The horror fans who thrive on Hiss and Click, or the Mimoh fans might just be able to sit through this film. The others should give it a miss.

Vikram Bhatt surely deserves a pat on the back for executing a sensuous paranormal in 3D format.  He takes audience expectation and fascination to a new level by making ‘Haunted’ in 3D format. The spine chilling flick quite fairly manages to scare people as horror and 3D is a scary combination which makes it real. He has created a perception of depth which sets your adrenaline rushing. But at the same time too much of unrealistic material and poor editing makes the film loosely packed which lets your enthusiasm and scary emotions take a backseat at the end. The climax is too melodramatic and boring. It’s a must watch if you are a lover of gritty horror flick with romance as background.
