Mother Teresa was a Roman Catholic nun and founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, an organization that serves the poorest of the world’s population. An ethnic Albanian, born in what is now Macedonia, she lived and worked in India for nearly seven decades and became a citizen of that country. Her dedication to helping the poorest and sickest communities in Kolkata (then Calcutta) earned Mother Teresa widespread fame and numerous honors, including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.

Childhood and Move to India

Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in what is now Skopje, North Macedonia; at the time it was part of the Ottoman Empire. Her family was of Albanian descent; her father, a reasonably successful merchant, died when she was just eight years old. After his death, the family struggled financially, but her mother instilled in young Agnes the importance of leading a Christian life and serving the less fortunate.

At the age of 12, Agnes first felt a calling to become a nun and devote her life to God. She left home at the age of 18 and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish Catholic order with missions in India. She received training near Dublin, where she began learning English, before traveling to Kolkata (then known as Calcutta), India in late 1928. She took her first vows as a nun in May 1931, and received a new name: Teresa, after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. In 1937, when she took her final vows, she became known as Mother Teresa.

'Call Within a Call'

From 1931 to 1948, Mother Teresa taught geography, history and catechism at St. Mary’s High School in Kolkata. She learned Bengali and Hindi, and eventually became the school’s principal. She also regularly visited the city’s slums and saw how suffering increased there during the devastating famine in 1943, which killed hundreds of thousands of people in India’s Bengal province.

In September 1946, Mother Teresa experienced what she described as a “call within a call” while riding on a train within India. In response, she sought and received permission from her superiors to leave the convent school and live and work in the slums among the city’s sickest and poorest residents. With this move, Mother Teresa began wearing what would become her trademark garb: a white sari with a blue border, later adopted as the habit for the other nuns who worked alongside her.

The Order of the Missionaries of Charity 

In 1950, Mother Teresa received permission from the Holy See to found her own order, the Missionaries of Charity. The order’s purpose was to help the poor while living among them, sharing their experience and treating them with kindness, compassion and empathy, but never pity. Mother Teresa and those who joined her order built various facilities as an open-air school, housing for orphan children, nursing homes for lepers and hospices for terminally ill patients.

Mother Teresa’s order expanded over the years to serve communities outside Kolkata, and in 1965, received permission from Pope Paul VI to expand internationally. It opened its first center in the United States in 1971 in New York City, and would eventually reach around 90 countries.

As her work earned her international renown, Mother Teresa was awarded honors including the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971) and the Nehru Prize for her promotion of international peace and understanding (1972). In 1975, she was featured on the cover of TIME magazine and called one of the world’s “living saints.”

Nobel Peace Prize and Criticism

In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for what the prize committee cited as her “work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress in the world, which also constitute a threat to peace.” By that time, the Missionaries of Charity included more than 1,800 nuns and 120,000 lay workers, working in more than 80 centers in India and more than 100 other centers internationally. The following year, the Indian government awarded Mother Teresa the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honor.

Despite her numerous honors and widespread fame and admiration, Mother Teresa became a target of criticism as well. She held hard-line conservative views against divorce, contraception and abortion , as well as highly traditional views about the role of women in society. Some critics cast doubt on the level of hygiene and care at some of her order’s facilities; others accused her of trying to convert the people she served to Christianity.

Declining Health, Death and Sainthood 

After suffering a heart attack in 1989, Mother Teresa attempted to resign as head of the Missionaries of Charity but was returned to that office by a nearly unanimous vote; hers was the only dissent. In 1997, her worsening health forced her permanent retirement, and the order chose an Indian-born nun, Sister Nirmala, to replace her. Mother Teresa suffered cardiac arrest and died on September 5, 1997, in Kolkata, just days after her 87th birthday.

As the world mourned Mother Teresa’s death, Pope John Paul II issued a special dispensation to speed the process of her canonization, or becoming a saint. In 2003, he beatified Mother Teresa after an Indian woman attributed her recovery from stomach cancer to Mother Teresa’s intercession, which the Vatican recognized as a miracle.

Twelve years later, the Holy See recognized a second miracle, after a Brazilian man recovered from a life-threatening brain infection after his family prayed to Mother Teresa. In September 2016, Pope Francis I officially declared Mother Teresa a saint 19 years after her death—a markedly fast pace for modern times.

“She made her voice heard before the powers of this world, so that they might recognize their guilt for the crime of poverty they created,” the Pope said in the canonization ceremony, held in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City .

She gave education to the poor kids of her area along with her teaching profession. She began her era of humanity by opening an open-air school where she gave education to poor children. Her journey started without any aid from anyone.

Her real name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. However, she chose the name Mother Teresa after she spent time in Ireland at the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Mother Teresa knew five languages including English, Hindi, Bengali, Albanian and Serbian. This is why she was able to communicate with many people from different parts of the world.

Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her humanitarian services to charity and the poor. However, she donated all the money to the poor of Kolkata and in charity.

Before starting with charitable work she was a Headmistress at the Loreto-Convent School in Kolkata where she worked as a teacher for almost 20 years and left the school as she became more concerned about the poverty surrounding the school.

Mother Teresa spent most of her time for the welfare of the poor and the unwell in India. Focusing on helping the people who lived in the slums of Kolkata. 

She focused a lot on helping children who were poor and unwell for which she also started street schools and orphanages to support them in Kolkata.

Mother Teresa has been criticised by various people and organisations, such as Christopher Hitchens, Michael Parenti, Aroup Chatterjee, and Vishva Hindu Parishad, against the proselytising focus of her work, which includes a vehement opposition to abortion and contraception, a belief in the spiritual goodness of poverty, and alleged baptisms of the dying.

While visiting Pope John Paul II in 1983, Mother Teresa experienced a heart attack in Rome. She was given a synthetic pacemaker in 1989 following a second attack. After battling pneumonia while in Mexico, she had new cardiac issues in 1991. She offered to step down as leader of the Missionaries of Charity. In contrast, she was approved to remain by the order's nuns in a secret vote. Mother Teresa agreed to carry on her duties as the order's leader.

She passed away on September 5, 1997.

The history of mankind has been marked with exceptional people who have demonstrated courage and strength in fostering the happiness of human beings. Their lives have been admired by many for their great qualities and accomplishments. One of them is Mother Teresa whose life has been a great source of inspiration to me. Her legendary life was marked with heroic deeds of courage, sincerity, bravery, and self-sacrifice.

Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born on August 27, 1910 in Skopje, Macedonia. After she received her first communion in 1916, a love for souls was awakened from within her. Her father passed away when she was about eight years old. This placed the family in financial constrains as the mother become the sole bread winner for the entire household. Her mother’s love, care and direction shaped the young girl’s life. At the tender age of 12, she decided for the course of Christ to be a missionary to spread His love to the world. Six years later, she left the parental residence to join the Sisters of Loreto in India. To signify her purpose in life, she received her new name Teresa after Saint Teresa of Lisieux.

Mother Teresa performed heroic deeds that served as a witness of love, demonstrated the integrity of humankind and exemplified the life of Christ. She founded the Missionaries of Charity that was devoted to the service of the poorest of the poor in the remote slums of Calcutta. Their mission was to take care of people who no one was ready to watch over. She visited families, cleaned the deadly sores of some kids, provided homes for the homeless, cared for the old and nursed the sick. She helped establish several other organizations that strove to meet the physical and spiritual needs of the poor.

Mother Teresa’s life is sacrifice that I would love to teach other people about. I would teach them how she exemplified Christ in her life through her actions. She not only demonstrated love, but also talked and preached about it. The simple ways of preaching salvation she did, touched the hearts of millions around the world. Mother Teresa left a testimony of immovable faith, unshakable hope and astonishing acts of charity. Her life is full of lessons of humility, joy and service. The decision she made to live among the poorest of the poor is an act of humility. She took care of them by providing food, helping in treating their ailments and building for them houses. Mother Teresa labours was a witness of joy. Her joy became complete in seeing the needs of the poor met. Her life was dedicated to the service of mankind. She was like a pencil in God’s hand whereby God does the thinking and the writing while the pencil does not have anything to do with it. She allowed her life to be used by God for His own divine purposes. Mother Teresa often urged people to give willfully towards the course of alleviating poverty as this demonstrates the oneness of humanity. In doing service, she demonstrated that true love has to be put to action.

Throughout my entire life, I have accumulated experiences that remind me of the heroic deeds of Mother Teresa. Her selfless life is an encouragement to me to live another day demonstrating God’s love to humankind. This has made me to identify with her in order to recognize the positive values in me. Mother Teresa demonstrated leadership in bringing together various people of different backgrounds to a common goal of helping the poor people. This has inspired me to always be in the forefront in duties that are aimed at easing the human suffering. She lived an independent life that was unchallenged by mockery around her. She was her own person who followed her conscience in making vital decisions even when it seems as though no one was supporting her. This has been a direction to me to live a life that is guided by principles and to develop the indomitable spirit especially when it comes to efforts that are meant to be useful to others.

In spite of many years of hard work, she did not give up. She often suffered from many ailments but she got the strength to continue in showing compassion to the people who deserves it the most. In difficult times when I am about to give up, her life has been an encouragement to me.

Mother Teresa, in her busy life, never hesitated to whisper a prayer anytime to ask God for comfort and direction in life. She totally depended on God for meeting her needs. This has resounded in me that no matter what difficulties that I may be facing in this life, God’s help is always available to me and He is only a prayer away. She was the sent-of-God to show His love and compassion to mankind. And so I am.

Mother Teresa died aged 87, on 5 th September 1997. Her heroic deeds are a show of alleviating human suffering through acts of love.

Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu dearly known as Mother Teresa all over the world was a symbol of love and dedication for humanity. She was born on August 2, AD. 1910 in a small village Skopje in Yugoslavia . She was called Agnes in her childhood. It was the name she took from her mother who was a pious lady. Her father was a kind and charitable man.

She had her early education from the local school Sacred Heart Church . In 1928 she came to Kolkata with a Missionary Organization. She joined Loreto Convent at Entally as a Geography teacher. Soon she started her charitable mission and began to work in the slum areas all around.

When she was working for the Mission in Kolkata she came in close contact with the poor and the distressed. She was then deeply moved at the sight of their plight and at once realized that the suffering humanity needed her. She felt inspired to remove the agonies and miseries from the life of the sufferers. Mother Teresa built homes for the homeless.

Her Nirmal Hriday at Kalighat became a shelter for the dying. In private life, she was the most modest of all the modest. Everybody has seen her everywhere, clad in a simple white saree with a blue border, and with a small cross round her neck. She worked silently and never beat publicity.

For all her work she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and Bharat Ratna in 1980. She breathed her last on September 5, 1997. She was buried sung all over the globe. Her death has lost a true humanist in her.

NPR is defending its journalism and integrity after a senior editor wrote an essay accusing it of losing the public's trust.

NPR's top news executive defended its journalism and its commitment to reflecting a diverse array of views on Tuesday after a senior NPR editor wrote a broad critique of how the network has covered some of the most important stories of the age.

"An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don't have an audience that reflects America," writes Uri Berliner.

A strategic emphasis on diversity and inclusion on the basis of race, ethnicity and sexual orientation, promoted by NPR's former CEO, John Lansing, has fed "the absence of viewpoint diversity," Berliner writes.

NPR's chief news executive, Edith Chapin, wrote in a memo to staff Tuesday afternoon that she and the news leadership team strongly reject Berliner's assessment.

"We're proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories," she wrote. "We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world."

NPR names tech executive Katherine Maher to lead in turbulent era

She added, "None of our work is above scrutiny or critique. We must have vigorous discussions in the newsroom about how we serve the public as a whole."

A spokesperson for NPR said Chapin, who also serves as the network's chief content officer, would have no further comment.

Praised by NPR's critics

Berliner is a senior editor on NPR's Business Desk. (Disclosure: I, too, am part of the Business Desk, and Berliner has edited many of my past stories. He did not see any version of this article or participate in its preparation before it was posted publicly.)

Berliner's essay , titled "I've Been at NPR for 25 years. Here's How We Lost America's Trust," was published by The Free Press, a website that has welcomed journalists who have concluded that mainstream news outlets have become reflexively liberal.

Berliner writes that as a Subaru-driving, Sarah Lawrence College graduate who "was raised by a lesbian peace activist mother ," he fits the mold of a loyal NPR fan.

Yet Berliner says NPR's news coverage has fallen short on some of the most controversial stories of recent years, from the question of whether former President Donald Trump colluded with Russia in the 2016 election, to the origins of the virus that causes COVID-19, to the significance and provenance of emails leaked from a laptop owned by Hunter Biden weeks before the 2020 election. In addition, he blasted NPR's coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

On each of these stories, Berliner asserts, NPR has suffered from groupthink due to too little diversity of viewpoints in the newsroom.

The essay ricocheted Tuesday around conservative media , with some labeling Berliner a whistleblower . Others picked it up on social media, including Elon Musk, who has lambasted NPR for leaving his social media site, X. (Musk emailed another NPR reporter a link to Berliner's article with a gibe that the reporter was a "quisling" — a World War II reference to someone who collaborates with the enemy.)

When asked for further comment late Tuesday, Berliner declined, saying the essay spoke for itself.

The arguments he raises — and counters — have percolated across U.S. newsrooms in recent years. The #MeToo sexual harassment scandals of 2016 and 2017 forced newsrooms to listen to and heed more junior colleagues. The social justice movement prompted by the killing of George Floyd in 2020 inspired a reckoning in many places. Newsroom leaders often appeared to stand on shaky ground.

Leaders at many newsrooms, including top editors at The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times , lost their jobs. Legendary Washington Post Executive Editor Martin Baron wrote in his memoir that he feared his bonds with the staff were "frayed beyond repair," especially over the degree of self-expression his journalists expected to exert on social media, before he decided to step down in early 2021.

Since then, Baron and others — including leaders of some of these newsrooms — have suggested that the pendulum has swung too far.

New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger warned last year against journalists embracing a stance of what he calls "one-side-ism": "where journalists are demonstrating that they're on the side of the righteous."

"I really think that that can create blind spots and echo chambers," he said.

Internal arguments at The Times over the strength of its reporting on accusations that Hamas engaged in sexual assaults as part of a strategy for its Oct. 7 attack on Israel erupted publicly . The paper conducted an investigation to determine the source of a leak over a planned episode of the paper's podcast The Daily on the subject, which months later has not been released. The newsroom guild accused the paper of "targeted interrogation" of journalists of Middle Eastern descent.

Heated pushback in NPR's newsroom

Given Berliner's account of private conversations, several NPR journalists question whether they can now trust him with unguarded assessments about stories in real time. Others express frustration that he had not sought out comment in advance of publication. Berliner acknowledged to me that for this story, he did not seek NPR's approval to publish the piece, nor did he give the network advance notice.

Some of Berliner's NPR colleagues are responding heatedly. Fernando Alfonso, a senior supervising editor for digital news, wrote that he wholeheartedly rejected Berliner's critique of the coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict, for which NPR's journalists, like their peers, periodically put themselves at risk.

Alfonso also took issue with Berliner's concern over the focus on diversity at NPR.

"As a person of color who has often worked in newsrooms with little to no people who look like me, the efforts NPR has made to diversify its workforce and its sources are unique and appropriate given the news industry's long-standing lack of diversity," Alfonso says. "These efforts should be celebrated and not denigrated as Uri has done."

After this story was first published, Berliner contested Alfonso's characterization, saying his criticism of NPR is about the lack of diversity of viewpoints, not its diversity itself.

"I never criticized NPR's priority of achieving a more diverse workforce in terms of race, ethnicity and sexual orientation. I have not 'denigrated' NPR's newsroom diversity goals," Berliner said. "That's wrong."

Questions of diversity

Under former CEO John Lansing, NPR made increasing diversity, both of its staff and its audience, its "North Star" mission. Berliner says in the essay that NPR failed to consider broader diversity of viewpoint, noting, "In D.C., where NPR is headquartered and many of us live, I found 87 registered Democrats working in editorial positions and zero Republicans."

Berliner cited audience estimates that suggested a concurrent falloff in listening by Republicans. (The number of people listening to NPR broadcasts and terrestrial radio broadly has declined since the start of the pandemic.)

Former NPR vice president for news and ombudsman Jeffrey Dvorkin tweeted , "I know Uri. He's not wrong."

Others questioned Berliner's logic. "This probably gets causality somewhat backward," tweeted Semafor Washington editor Jordan Weissmann . "I'd guess that a lot of NPR listeners who voted for [Mitt] Romney have changed how they identify politically."

Similarly, Nieman Lab founder Joshua Benton suggested the rise of Trump alienated many NPR-appreciating Republicans from the GOP.

In recent years, NPR has greatly enhanced the percentage of people of color in its workforce and its executive ranks. Four out of 10 staffers are people of color; nearly half of NPR's leadership team identifies as Black, Asian or Latino.

"The philosophy is: Do you want to serve all of America and make sure it sounds like all of America, or not?" Lansing, who stepped down last month, says in response to Berliner's piece. "I'd welcome the argument against that."

"On radio, we were really lagging in our representation of an audience that makes us look like what America looks like today," Lansing says. The U.S. looks and sounds a lot different than it did in 1971, when NPR's first show was broadcast, Lansing says.

A network spokesperson says new NPR CEO Katherine Maher supports Chapin and her response to Berliner's critique.

The spokesperson says that Maher "believes that it's a healthy thing for a public service newsroom to engage in rigorous consideration of the needs of our audiences, including where we serve our mission well and where we can serve it better."

Mother Teresa honoured in the Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun, missionary and founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity. She was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in 2016.

Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, Macedonia. The following day, she was baptized as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. At the age of twelve, she felt strongly the call of God. At 18, she joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India.

On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa received permission from the Holy See to start the order "The Missionaries of Charity." The main purpose was to love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after.
