With its vote on Feb. 13, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents authorized the University of Georgia to establish a new independent School of Medicine in Athens.

Why does georgia need a new public medical school right now.

Georgia faces significant challenges in addressing the healthcare needs of its citizens. Our population, which presently ranks 8th in the nation at approximately 11 million, is rapidly growing, yet we continue to have only one public medical school to serve the state’s needs. That simply isn’t enough to meet demand. Georgia currently ranks 40th in the nation for the number of active patient care physicians per capita and 41st for the number of public medical students per capita. At the same time, our population is aging, as are our physicians, with about one-third nearing retirement age.

How will a new medical school help to keep doctors in Georgia?

Georgia needs to expand the pipeline of both medical education and graduate medical education, and the UGA School of Medicine will do both. Georgia does very well in retaining medical students who complete residency training in the state. An independent medical school at UGA will increase residency opportunities through new partnerships with area hospital systems and, therefore, increase the number of doctors retained in the state.

When will the medical school open?

UGA is in the process of laying the foundation to further develop the Health Sciences Campus. Currently, the UGA School of Medicine has applied for accreditation and has been recognized as having Applicant Status by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). However, UGA cannot advertise or recruit for an inaugural class of students until the LCME grants “Preliminary Accreditation Status.” We will inform the public via this website when changes in our accreditation status occur.

What happens to the AU/UGA Medical Partnership?

Once UGA officially welcomes the first class of School of Medicine students, the university will become an independent medical school. However, students in years 2-4 of medical school who are enrolled in the Medical Partnership at the time will remain students in the Medical College of Georgia at the Athens campus. The official Medical Partnership will end after the last class of Medical Partnership students graduates.

How is the state’s investment of $50 million being used to establish a new medical school?

The $50M investment from the state will be matched with $50M in private resources to build a new medical education and research facility. The facility will allow the School of Medicine to expand its class size to train even more doctors for Georgia.

In December of 2020, Morehouse partnered with CommonSpirit Health and pledged to spend $100 million recruiting and educating more Black doctors to address racial health disparities in the United States. Although Morehouse is a historically black medical school, it accepts students of any racial or ethnic background as long as they have a passion for diversity and inclusion.

Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (Suwanee & Moultrie, GA)

As one of the nation’s oldest medical schools, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine prepares its graduates to provide “whole person” care to a diverse patient population. At PCOM, future osteopathic physicians learn to integrate traditional western medicine with complementary therapies and lifestyle modifications.

While their main campus is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, PCOM Georgia is located in Suwanee, and PCOM South Georgia is located in Moultrie. These campuses were added to the university to address the severe physician shortage in the South. New Medical School for University of Georgia Approved by State Board of Regents

The board that governs Georgia's public colleges authorized the University of Georgia to establish a medical school

ATLANTA (AP) — The board that governs Georgia ’s public colleges Tuesday authorized the University of Georgia to establish a medical school at its Athens campus.

The state Board of Regents gave unanimous approval to what would be Georgia’s second public medical school. The other is the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

Gov. Brian Kemp and other state officials have said a new medical school is needed because Georgia faces a shortage of doctors.

“The School of Medicine will significantly expand the pool of medical professionals in Georgia, attract more top-tier scientists and researchers to the state, and produce more physicians to serve underserved and rural Georgia communities,” UGA President Jere Morehead said in a statement.

The state House has approved $50 million for design and construction of the UGA School of Medicine in an amended fiscal 2024 budget that is awaiting a Senate vote. That is roughly half the money needed to build the school.

Officials will also seek accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, which sets standards for U.S. schools that award medical doctorate degrees.

Groundbreaking ceremony highlights a new building for UGA's School of Medicine

Many of the men and women directly responsible for creating a University of Georgia School of Medicine gathered Friday afternoon on the campus in Athens for a ceremonial ground-breaking of a new facility.

After speeches giving recognition to those who used their influence and worked to gain state financial support, a select number were positioned to hold shovels at long pile of dirt.

Numerous photographs were made as those who lined up on both sides of Gov. Brian Kemp and tossed a shovel of dirt to celebrate the day.

The landscape where they stood will soon change as a 92,000-square-foot building will be erected on the campus located off Prince Avenue in what is called Normaltown.

The building for medical education and research was hailed as a needed response to the physician shortage faced by Georgia.

UGA President Jere Morehead, University System of Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue, Gov. Kemp and Michelle Nuss, the Founding Dean for the school, all praised what this facility will provide for healthcare in Georgia.

“Today is an exciting and transformational moment at the University of Georgia,” Morehead said, adding that UGA is in a unique position to address the healthcare needs of the state through education, research and community outreach.

Morehead, along with Perdue, Nuss and Kemp, also praised the partnership UGA has had with the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

And Morehead also noted the work of former president Michael Adams, who first had the vision to create a medical facility at UGA and worked to devise that partnership with Augusta to get it started.

Nuss, who has a strong reputation in medical education, said the physician shortage continues to grow, not only in Georgia, but across the nation.

“Georgia needs more doctors, and they need them now,” she said.

Perdue, who has a degree in veterinary science from UGA, noted that his mother attended college on this campus when it was the State Normal School for teaching before it became the U.S. Navy Supply Corp School. The university acquired the campus in 2010.

Kemp obtained a degree in agriculture science from UGA and grew up down the street from the campus in the Homewood Hills subdivision.

The governor, who helped shepherd $50 million in state money to help fund the facility, described the new building as “an incredible milestone for our state.”

The facility will have about 67,000-square foot space dedicated to education, while the remaining area will contain biomedical research laboratories.

UGA breaks ground for medical school set to open in 2026

ATHENS ― The University of Georgia is moving forward with plans for what will become the second public medical school in the state.

Construction will soon begin on an expected $100 million facility at the current UGA health sciences campus, where medical students have attended since 2010 in partnership with Augusta University’s Medical College of Georgia.

“The work done at this school will further set Georgia apart as a leader in shaping our future as a nation and the world,” Gov. Brian Kemp said Friday at the groundbreaking ceremony.

The medical school is expected to open in 2026 and will double enrollment from the Augusta University/UGA partnership, from 60 students currently to at least 120, according to Sonny Perdue, chancellor of the University of Georgia System.

“That’s going to be great to have more of these white coats around here that are going to be our physicians going forward,” said Perdue, the former governor and U.S. secretary of agriculture.

In February, both chambers of the state legislature approved $50 million in state funds for the school. University of Georgia President Jere Morehead said another $50 million would be raised through private contributions.

“We are well on our way to achieving that goal,” Morehead added.

Dr. Shelley Nuss, campus dean of the Augusta University/UGA medical partnership, was named earlier this month by Morehead as the founding dean of the UGA School of Medicine. She said the creation of the medical school will help address a growing shortage of physicians across the state and country. Nine counties in Georgia currently have no doctor and one in 10

Georgians live in a county with just one doctor, according to Nuss.

“Georgia needs more doctors, and they need them now,” she said.

Smyrna native Alex Bergeron, a current medical student in Athens, said additional public enrollment will be beneficial because many students currently are forced to decide between attending private or out-of-state medical schools.

“This just makes sense to increase the pipeline of students for graduate medical education,” he said. “This will help the state get more doctors.”

The groundbreaking was a "transformational moment at the University of Georgia"

The University of Georgia broke ground Friday on a new medical education and research building that will significantly expand teaching and research capabilities at the university’s future School of Medicine .

Located on UGA’s Health Sciences campus, preliminary plans for the building include medical simulation suites, standardized patient rooms, clinical skills labs, a gross anatomy lab, and a medical library. The building will also feature student support spaces like conference rooms, study spaces, lounges, and faculty and staff offices dedicated to student support.

In total, the proposed building will measure approximately 92,000 square feet. Roughly 67,000 square feet of the building will be dedicated to medical education while the remaining 25,000 square feet will house biomedical research laboratories.

The new building will complement existing facilities and provide the UGA School of Medicine with capacity to expand from 60 students per class to 120 in the future.

“Today is an exciting and transformational moment at the University of Georgia,” said UGA President Jere W. Morehead. “As a land-grant university and Georgia’s flagship research institution, the University of Georgia is uniquely positioned to address the health care needs of our state through world-class medical education, research and community outreach.”

Following the recommendation of Governor Brian Kemp, the Georgia General Assembly passed a fiscal year 2024 amended budget that includes $50 million in funding for a new University of Georgia School of Medicine facility.

The $50 million in state funding will be matched by private contributions to fund the $100 million medical education and research building.

The University System of Georgia Board of Regents authorized the University of Georgia to establish a new independent School of Medicine in Athens in February.

In March, Dr. Shelley Nuss was named founding dean of the UGA School of Medicine. She previously served as an associate professor of internal medicine and psychiatry in the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership. In 2016, she was named campus dean of the Medical Partnership, which has been educating physicians in Athens since 2010.

“The fact is, Georgia needs more doctors, and we need them now,” said Nuss. “The new UGA School of Medicine will increase the number of medical students in the state, translating to more practicing physicians to help address Georgia’s greatest health care challenges.”

The creation of the UGA School of Medicine marks the natural evolution of the longest-serving medical partnership in the United States. Similar programs founded around the same time have already transitioned to independent medical schools.

UGA will continue to work closely with the Medical College of Georgia to ensure a smooth transition for current medical students as UGA seeks accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

The development of a new public school of medicine at UGA promises to help address a significant shortage of medical professionals. Georgia’s growing population tops approximately 11 million residents, straining the state’s existing medical infrastructure.

Now the nation’s eighth largest state, Georgia is forecasted to experience further population growth in the coming years, and nearly one-third of the state’s physicians are nearing retirement.

“Georgia is growing,” said Sonny Perdue, chancellor of the University System of Georgia. “We may only be only eighth today, but in just a few short years Georgia could be the fifth largest state. And that means we are going to need more health care, and people are going to get it here and across the state.”

Georgia currently ranks No. 40 among U.S. states for the number of active patient care physicians per capita, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), while it ranks No. 41 for the number of primary care physicians and No. 44 for the number of general surgeons per capita. The shortage of medical providers is particularly acute in rural and underserved areas, where access is even more limited.

UGA faculty are already engaged in human health research, and the establishment of a school of medicine will bolster their efforts.

“Our flagship institution, the University of Georgia, is tasked with the vital mission of educating and preparing the next generation of leaders,” said Gov. Brian Kemp. “To that end, one of our top priorities is building a strong health care workforce pipeline. This UGA facility will be an essential part of those efforts.”

Alongside funding from state government, strong private support will fortify efforts to create a School of Medicine at UGA. Donors have demonstrated robust support for UGA initiatives in recent years. In fiscal year 2023, UGA raised over $240 million in gifts and pledges from alumni, friends and foundation and industry partners. The university’s three-year rolling fundraising average is now a record $235 million per year, with annual contributions exceeding $200 million for the past six consecutive years.

The first 2 years of the programme are focussed heavily on pre-clinical areas with the focus shifting to clinical study for years 3-5. In the final year, there will be a year-long internship in a local hospital and completion of the state exams is also required. Upon completion of all requirements over the 6 years, students will be become a Doctor of Medicine (MD) and obtain a master’s degree. Employed teaching and assessment methodologies enable the acquisition and organisation of knowledge match with practical application of gained competencies.

Dentistry course lasts for 5 years. The program aims to coach qualified dentists, whose professional activities will help to increase the level of dental services, prevent oral diseases and improve overall health. The first 2 years will focus largely on pre-clinical study where students will gain an understanding of dentistry fundamentals. The course from years 3-5 will focus primarily on clinical training. The course ends with a 6 month internship and students must complete state exams. The course will give students a thorough understanding of all areas related to pre & post clinical procedures relating to dentistry. Successful students will be rewarded the title of Dentist and also earn a master’s degree. Newly qualified dentists will have a great opportunity to find work in Georgia or continue with their practice in other countries.

Within the framework of Dentistry Programme, Rooms for Phantom Studies and University Dental Clinic are operating at the university, which enable students to have direct contact with patients from an early stage of studying. Teaching at the faculty is carried out in accordance with international standards. The University provides all the conditions for gaining qualitative knowledge and leading an interesting student life.

The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree program takes five years of full-time study to complete offered in Georgian, Russian or English languages.

The first two years of study are mainly conducted at lectures and seminars, as students get the opportunity to engage in anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, reproduction, psychology, microbiology, radiology, immunology and ecology. After the first two years, students will be well-versed in animal health and husbandry. If the pre-clinical stage has laid the foundation for what a student should expect from a healthy animal, the Clinical stage then develops this knowledge into what might go wrong. Various diseases are studied, as well as treatment, pathology, parasitology, surgery, pharmacology, internal diseases, toxicology, anaesthesiology, epidemiology.

At the end of the final year the candidates are expected to pass a series of final exams, In addition, students need to complete a graduate thesis as part of the requirements to obtain the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Graduates have plenty of options like: specialising, such as becoming an equine or farm veterinarian, focusing on exotic animals, working with zoos, working exclusively with dogs, cats or horses on a more specialist basis, or working with Government agencies.

What Students Who Apply to Study Pharmacy in Georgia Should Know

Pharmacy is a 4 academic year program that prepares a qualified pharmacist who will be able to develop professionally and continue with the next stage of education.

This develops basic knowledge in: pharmaceutical care, patient-oriented pharmacotherapy, use of the results of clinical trials in pharmacy, production and manufacturing of medical products, and pharmaceutical analysis; Management skills necessary for: promoting pharmaceutical research based on ethical values, processing and delivering of pharmaceutical information, implementation of physician-pharmacist-patient model, communication with professional societies and general community, our graduates possess skills for management of the structural units at appropriate (intermediate) levels in pharmaceutical organisations. They may be employed in pharmaceutical companies, drug stores and health care facilities, public health organisations, drug quality control and toxicological laboratories, also in insurance companies.

The programme is taught in English. At the end of the programme students will be given an Academic Degree/Qualification: Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPh).

How Much Does it Cost For Students to Study Medicine and Medical Sciences Programmes in Georgia

Candidates from EU and non-EU countries can study English medical programs proposed by Georgian medical universities , paying 2100 – 3,500 per year. For instance, Medical course fees range between 2800-3500 per year, Pharmaceutical course – £ 2,500 per year, dental course £2100 – £3,000 per year.

Foreign students from countries whose mother tongue differs from English have to Develop their academic English language skills in order to meet the English language requirements at Georgian universities offering Medical studies in English. In that case candidates must have a recognised English qualification aligned with CEFR level B2 to successfully apply. To prove the English qualification either one of the following must be submitted: a) an official international language certificate b) an English Proficiency Statement from the university, high school or college, confirming that English was the language of instruction c) a certificate issued by a local or international English language instruction provider (e.g. language school), confirming the acquisition of B2 level as a result of a language course attended.

SCOTUS Abortion case examines what care doctors can provide in emergency rooms

According to data from the National Institutes of Health - 1 in 3 women will visit the emergency room during pregnancy.

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - This week at the Supreme Court, Justices will hear arguments in a case of which law takes precedent, State, or Federal.

It deals with EMTALA - the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act.

Alexa Kolbi-Molinas with the ACLU explains.

“It says that every hospital must provide whatever treatment is necessary to any individual who comes to that hospital’s emergency room experiencing an emergency medical condition,” said Kolbi-Molinas.

Idaho’s laws ban doctors from performing emergency abortions unless the woman is near death.

“Doctors are being placed in a position where they have to choose between criminal liability, the potential that they could go to jail, or offering life and health saving care that their patients need”, said Skye Perryman, CEO of Democracy Forward.

“It’s replacing their medical judgment with a legal judgment,” said Lawyer Lindsay Harrison, who represents St. Luke’s hospital system, the largest private employer in Idaho.

This case finds itself at the confluence of medicine, law, and politics.

For pro-life congressman Tim Burchett, it’s an issue of morality.

“The politics of this - we’ve got an election coming up - you know and everyone is worried about what the polls say, they need to worry about what their conscience says,” said Burchett.

Oral arguments will be heard Wednesday, with decision expected by June.
