8 Movie Review Sites for Christian Parents: The Fervent Mama - You don't have to worry if the movie stands up to your convictions- these movie review sites for Christian parents will save your next family movie night! #moviereviews #ChristianMovies

Let’s set the scene…..

You’ve picked the movie, you’ve popped the popcorn, everyone’s comfy. You pop in the movie and things are going well. You’re laughing and smiling and enjoying family time. And then it happens, that scene you forgot about, or those words that made you cringe.

Oh, shoot! Wasn’t this supposed to be a kid’s movie? How could I forget about this?! You cover the kid’s eyes while your spouse fumbles around trying to turn it off, or fast-forward, or even just hope the electricity goes out. Give us a break, right?!

You’ve been there, I know you have because I’ve been there too! But, I’m gonna let you in on a little secret that I’ve been carrying around for a while. With a simple click, you won’t have to worry anymore if the movie is kid-friendly, or stands up to your convictions.

You’re New BFF

These movie review sites for Christian parents will be your BFF when it comes to your next family movie night! I can almost guarantee that you’ll find family-friendly movie reviews on the show of your choice via one of these sites.

I do find it interesting that not one of these websites will give you a definitive “do not watch” or “definitely watch” at the end of the review. To make your decision, you will still need to gather information from the reviews and make a judgment call based on your family values and expectations.

You might find it helpful to look at more than one site to get a more well-rounded perspective! Fortunately, most of these websites use headings and organize the posts so you can quickly scan for the content that matters most, such as sexual content, profanity, violence, or nudity.

Popcorn bucket with the text overlay

I’ve put this list in order of preference, so I recommend you start at the top of the list for the best information and then work your way down when you can’t find what you need. If you need to make a fast decision the DOVE site has the most concise information. But if it’s the details you are looking for, I’d go with Plugged In first every time.

I don’t know how many times we’ve pulled out a movie we watched ourselves as kids and remembered fondly, only to get ten minutes into the movie and turn it off in shock. Growing up, growing in faith, and having children of our own certainly changes how we view content. For this reason, I’m glad we have sites that review older movies and not just the most current content.

8 Movie Review Sites for Christian Parents

This one is, by far, my favorite review site to check in on. I’ve used it numerous times, and not just for kids’ movies. We even check videos out for ourselves using this site too! It never fails to disappoint us with accuracy or detail, the writers at Focus on the Family really do a great job! If you have tweens, it would be perfectly safe to have them read the Plugged In review for the video in question before they ask you for permission. This will give your teens an excellent overview of things to watch for and also save you significant time as they will do the narrowing down for you.

Common Sense Media

This next movie review site is my second favorite. Like Plugged In, Common Sense Media is incredibly thorough and provides independent reviews based upon age, ratings, and other pertinent information you’ll definitely want to know about. This site was started to help parents navigate the digital age and protect their children from the unknown effects of too much media. If you can’t find what you are looking for on PluggedIn, you will find all the recent movies reviewed here!

Kinds In Mind

With a scaled rating of Sex/Nudity, Violence/Gore, and Language, the system works pretty well for this company. While I was hoping that this movie review site was geared mainly towards Christian parents, they do state that they are independent of all political and religious viewpoints.

I didn’t even know that Dove had their own movie review system. But, they’ve got a pretty good thing going here. I don’t find that it’s as detailed as some of the others here, but it could definitely get the job done if you need just a little snippet of information so you can make a quick decision.

Movie Guide

This is not your old-fashioned movie guide (like I was thinking it was) it actually is very informative and ranks at the top of the list for me! While the site doesn’t have much information about its roots, the site has a ton of movie reviews that are available!

Raising Children

I had never heard of this site until I started doing a little more digging on movie review sites for Christian parents. While this one is not Christian based, and not as detailed in the information, it does cover its bases- so we’ll still list it as a good option for movie review sites for parents.

Box Office Mom

She’s a great movie buff, but I do feel as though it’s a little less informative and a little more dependent on her own opinions when it comes to how her movies are rated. Yet, you may enjoy that real-life review about it. I also love throwing her in here to support another mom blogger!

Parent Previews

Parent Previews is just, well, okay . The problem is that with some of their movie reviews they have a disclaimer that they have not actually viewed the movie yet and the information is gathered from an outside source. No thanks.

All of these sites are different, so it really depends on your personal preference as to which site you’ll refer to when looking for a family-friendly movie review. The top two listed are my favorites, but you may be happy with what another site has to offer!

How do you do your due diligence when choosing what movies are “good enough” for your children?

movie reviews for christian families

Just a heads up to be wary of Common Sense Media. They seem good on the surface but in their About Us they are all about the cult of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), which means their staff is woke. And woke and Christianity do not mix.

I have yet to find just ONE site that has the backbone to give the most basic information about whether a movie (any movie searched for) has anything GAY in it! If a site does not include this information on any given search then it is not REALLY a site worth searching and it is a phony moral search site (not Christian, not Godly or morally family friendly by any standard, period)! You can’t leave something like this out of your ratings and be legitimately moral! And you can’t con God by pretending to be Christian friendly and God Revering!

Jane Doe, you are 1OO% correct! My family and I are SICK AND TIRED of all the GAY stuff.

Amen to this, sister!!

Personally with my kid I haven’t shown her anything newer than 1995 or so that I haven’t pre-screened first just to make sure there’s no gay and no anti-men messages in it. But it’s hard when everyone wants to watch the latest stuff.

Be wary of Common Sense Media – I used to use them all the time and loved the detail they provided about what to expect in a movie… until I took my 5 year old to a movie that ended up having a gay kissing scene in it. Common Sense Media does not specify when there are any LGBTQ+ characters or scenes in movies.

Agreed. I read another review where all the parent reviews regarding the lgbtq content were removed by other upset parents who thought they were offensive. I wrote saying how unbalanced this was and that the point of the parent reviews were for parents to see a well rounded review of what is in the show and that if those views were removed based on other parents opinions, that was unfair and one sided.

I’m so sorry you got fooled by them. I almost was too. On the surface they seem really good but thankfully I thought to look at their About Us section and saw they had a page about “Diversity and Inclusion”, which is code for the modern day woke cult. Now I know I won’t be trusting them at all.

We love plugged in! We also use Down The Hobbit Hole Blogs reviews because they have reliable age suggestions and parental warnings. We’re foster parents, so there are a lot of weird things that would make us say yes or no to a movie.

I would like to add one more to your list ChristianAnswers.net/spotlight

I have a bookmark folder on my computer & my phone and add Christian movie review sites as I find them. On my computer and phone I open all the sites in the folder as tabs and search each for movies at the store (the firewall at Dollar General explicitly blocks access to PluggedIn.com) to avoid getting unsuitable movies.

About PluggedIn.com

Plugged In Review Team

PHONES AND FACEBOOK

Radio and tv, frequently asked questions (faq).

Plugged In looks at films through a biblical worldview filter, keeping families—especially those with children in the home—ultimately in mind. Realizing the MPAA’s ratings system is greatly lacking (and often untrustworthy), we strive to be reliable “information providers,” highlighting both the positive and negative content elements, a requisite for discerning individuals regarding the making of wise entertainment choices. While providing a numerical rating for each movie and varying colors of caution for broad age ranges in an effort to help categorize where a film generally stands within the cultural context, we refrain from telling people to view or not view a specific film. Instead we outline content in categories such as “sexual,” “drug and alcohol,” “violence,” “crude or profane language,” “spiritual,” etc., then provide summation and perspective for that content, equipping families (and individuals) with information they can draw upon to assist in making media decisions.

According to a poll of Plugged In readers, 70% watch R-rated movies. Additionally, since many R films target teens (especially raunchy comedies and horror flicks), our reviews help families navigate this prominent area of the culture. By reading our reviews, parents gain a clearer understanding of what Hollywood is aiming at their kids, and what their children’s peers are consuming. Also, by having a content breakdown of R movies, parents can articulate why a particular film fails to meet the family standard. Beyond observing a “label,” this reinforces moral boundaries for adolescents.

A California mom alluded to this benefit when she told us, “Last weekend my son, age 16, saw a very disgusting film at a friend’s home. Only after that did I find your website. This created a very meaningful two-hour discussion with him on values and media choices. However, the next weekend he asked to go see another R-rated film. We said ‘no.’ My son then asked, ‘How about if I check it out on that website Mom likes?’ My husband, smiling, said, ‘Sure!’ A few minutes later my son emerged from the office and said, ‘You guys wouldn’t want me to see it.'”

Yes! To write a comprehensive and meaningful review, this is a must. And that goes for listening to music albums and tracks, playing video games and watching specific episodes of a TV series, too.

No. Because most unrated video versions of films add negative content, we feel that our review of the rated version continues to do the job it was intended to do—help families make discerning choices about the entertainment they consume. There is rarely a good reason for families to intentionally watch a film with more negative content in it than the original release contains.

Not all theatrical releases are made available to us before they hit the cineplex. But even when we do get to screen a movie early, a professional code of ethics called an “embargo” requires that we wait until either the day of or the day before its release to post our review. We realize that not all reviewers abide by this, but it’s important to us that Plugged In operate with integrity, both in the way we write our reviews and the way we publish them.

We almost always choose to review the unedited version. The so-called purifying process used on “clean” CDs and downloads is usually nothing more than the bleeping (or overdubbing) of some of the most egregious obscenities. In the case of gangsta rap, the censor might also excise words such as “murder,” “drive-by” and “bullets,” along with extreme references to drug use. But savvy listeners can easily fill in the blanks. A teen named Alicia wrote us, “Some of my friends have gotten the edited version of Eminem and they think it’s OK. But it’s not like you don’t know what’s being cut out.”

Focus on the Family’s  “Family Safety”  page is a good place to start.

30 best christian movies to watch.

It can be hard to find good family films that everyone loves, especially if you are a faith-based family, so we've compiled a list for you. These Christian films offer adventure, suspense, special effects, love, hope, and forgiveness. Christian film companies have produced 100's of films, but here are a handful of Christian-based movies that stand apart, and most of them can be found on Netflix. I'll even add a bonus series at the end that every Christian should watch!

1. Joseph: King of Dreams

It follows the life of Joseph from slavery to becoming the second most powerful man in Egypt. The story is written in a way that even young minds can comprehend.

2. God Bless the Broken Road

The story of love between a widowed mother and a driver while she tries to maintain her faith will touch your soul's softest spot. The movie gives a perfect balance of beauty and pain.

3. Soul Surfer

The movie narrates the story of Bethany Hamilton, a Christian and a life-long surfer. An attack by a shark sees her lose her arm, but seeks a sanctuary in Christ. If you are in the mood for an inspiring and uplifting film, Soul Surfer will be a perfect fit.

4. Same Kind of Different as Me

The Christian movie expresses the joy and pain of a shattered relationship. Debbie Hall and Ron meet a homeless man, Denver, who inspires them to restores their marriage. It provides a glimpse into the realities of racism and homelessness without moving into depth of violence.

The Christian movie features Victor Torres, who struggled with drug addiction but became victorious by God's grace. A Christian adult should watch the film and better understand the weight of sins and thus recognize the unconditional true love of God.

6. The Letters

This film narrates the story of Mother Teres and her ministry. Her letters show how she struggled with alienation and doubts from God and people in her life. It is a true inspiration to anyone inside the Christian faith.

7. 23 Blast

It tells the touching story of Travis. The courageous and determined high school football player goes blind after an infection. The movie is inspiring and, at the same time, entertaining.

8. Christian Mingle

Christian Mingle gives a slight ironical view of the Christian club. The movie has a great evangelistic message and will also break your rib.

9. The Robe

10. Unconditional

The movie features Samantha Crawford, who faces a tough life after the murder of her husband. The Christian film is a testament to the redeeming power of God's unconditional love.

11. The Fathers Love

The movie features the story of Sarah, who dates too much. So much so, at times, she even dates more than one man in a day. Until she finally comes to trust in Jesus.

12. The Prince of Egypt

The Prince of Egypt dramatizes the story of Moses. The entertaining masterpiece gives a glimpse of God's sovereignty and miraculous involvement in a man's life. It's not quite scripturally accurate, but it could be a good launching off point when introducing young children to Old Testament stories.

13. Last Ounce of Courage

The Christian movie narrates a critical story with a clear patriotic and evangelistic message. It starts with a crucial back-story and moves into a spiritual ending that is heart-rending.

14. Raising Izzie

Two orphaned sisters live alone and offer support to each other as they try to maintain secrecy in their solitude. The engaging movie incorporates humor in the storyline. The conclusion is about faith, prayer, and miracle.

15. Left Behind

The movie gives an alert of the end time. Left Behind will leave a nonbeliever to convert with seeing the goodness of God's salvation. This film has options! You can either throwback to the Kirk Cameron version of the film series or watch Nicolas Cage's 2014 release.

The movie gives valuable lessons to both adult and young minds. If you are looking for an action Christian movie, then this is one of them.

17. God's Not Dead

This Christian film will surely elevate your faith in God to another level. Life can get tough to the point of feeling like forsaking God. The movie inspires you to keep believing and never give up on God.

23. Only God Can

30. Saved By Grace

The movie tells the story of a despaired retired cop over losing his family. He considers a dramatic move that would be a turning point for his life.

If you haven't heard of it by now, The Chosen series (season 1) takes you on a walk through the life of Jesus' early ministry days when he handpicks his disciples and some of his earliest miracles. This sweet, joyful, and arguably accurate account of Jesus' life can be viewed for free on YouTube , or you can watch it on PureFlix or The Chosen app. I, for one, can't wait to see what's in store for season 2!

Prequel origin story of the fictional character Willy Wonka

movie reviews for christian families

“Every good thing in this world started with a dream”

W illy Wonka ( Timothée Chalamet ) has big chocolatey dreams. He has 12 silver sovereigns in his pockets and an optimistic look on the future ahead of him: one that includes him opening and owning his own chocolate shop and even someday his own chocolate factory. Actually, Willy had to spend some of those sovereigns: shining his shoes, food, so now he’s down to no tuppence left. Even with no place to sleep, and just the clothes on his back and his suitcase of dreams, this won’t deter Willy, no sir!

“Say, you look like a guy who’s in a bit of a predicament?” Do you need a place to stay?” says a mysterious looking fellow to Willy. “Well it is mighty cold out tonight, so sure why not?” Wonka has always been one to rely on the goodness and kindness of others.

Soon thereafter Wonka arrives at the inn of Mrs. Scrubbitts ( Olivia Colman ). “I have no way to pay you for my stay right now,” Willy says. “No worries, I’ll give you a whole day and then you pay me back at the end of tomorrow,” says Mrs. Scrubbit. Sure enough, Wonka acquires the tuppence but Mrs. Scrubbit is NOT as kind and loving as she appears to be and sure enough Willy ends up in servitude to Mrs. Scrubbit and her henchman Bleecher working in her sweatshop. How is Wonka going to achieve his dreams now?

Through the help of an intuitive little girl, Noodle, and some others stuck in the sweatshop, Wonka is able to temporarily escape from time to time and promote his chocolatey adventures. The public, in turn, really loves his chocolate. It’s like nothing they’ve ever tasted! Well, almost all of the public. Of course, chocolate THAT good is bound to make a few enemies such as Wonka’s competitors: Fickelgruber, Prodnose and Slugworth. They’ll do anything in their power to ensure Wonka never sells chocolate in their city as long as he lives and breathes.

But like I said before, you can’t keep a good chocolatier down! Especially if that man just happens to be the one, the only Willy Wonka.

The original “ Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory ” (1971) with Gene Wilder is by far one of the most iconic and treasured movie-musicals of all time. While there have been attempts to replicate it (let’s not even discuss Johnny Depps’ 2005 awkward and just creepy retelling), nothing can really touch the original, at least in my opinion.

From the incredible scenery (I mean, come on, the chocolate river in the original film was made of REAL CHOCOLATE), the stellar performances (I mean Julie Dawn Cole as Veruca Salt is a performance that is still talked about to this day) and the songs that have transcended time (“Pure Imagination,” “Cheer Up Charlie,” “Golden Ticket”), it’s hard to find a movie-musical from that era that has left such a lasting impact today. So when I read the announcement in the news (actually it was on here) that a prequel to the 1961 film was going to be made, I was incredibly skeptical, even up to the point of the actual showing.

“Wonka” does not try to copy, moment to moment, everything from the original film. Let’s be honest, nothing could. What I can appreciate though, is “Wonka” is a completely original, standalone film, sure, but then also presents itself with just enough nostalgia where those of us who have grown up with the film (such as my friend and I) can sit in our seats and go, “Wait, there’s that from the original film! How subtle and cool is that?” “Wonka” at times is like eating a chocolate bar with nuts in it. You can appreciate both the sweet and the salty (well, the saltiness to a point, but I’ll get to that in a moment).

Performance-wise, Timothée Chalamet is no Gene Wilder and he, himself, has stated that he wasn’t trying to copy Wilder completely but wanted to incorporate portions.

However, while I’ve never been Timothee’s biggest fan, I can respect and appreciate his performance as the young Wonka. He brings a much younger, more naivé chocolate maker to the screen, but doesn’t present Wonka as stupid, careless or carefree. There are layers to this Wonka, and while we don’t see it all on display, we still see enough to understand why the adult Wonka (the Gene Wilder Wonka) becomes who he becomes.

Likewise, I have to commend Olivia Colman ’s performance as Mrs. Scrubbit. She is, by far, a legend among legends in Hollywood (“The Crown,” “Broadchurch” are some of my favorites I’ve seen her in) and this film, once again, gives proof as to why. She is a dastardly villain (one of many) that you really love to hate and that’s half the fun.

As for the music of the film, Neil Hammon’s music both inspires and confuses me at times. There are songs (and I can say this as a music educator and musician of many years) that sometimes compliment the film and then some that felt a little out of place. For example, “You’ve Never Had Chocolate Like This,” had this light wit and humor and upbeat feel that reminded me a lot of “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket.” Additionally the duet/ballad “For a Moment” reminds me a lot of the song, “Cheer Up Charlie” that was sung by Charlie’s mother in “Willy Wonka…” However, there are songs that just feel out of place such as “Sorry, Noodle,” and “Sweet Tooth,” but even these really didn’t detract from the overall appreciation of the music as a whole, as, in general, the songs compliment what is occurring on screen.

Content for Concern

Violence: A servant girl is seen being physically thrown into a bird coop a few times. A character is hit on the head and knocked out. Another character is waterboarded briefly. An Oompa Loompa hits a character on his head and foot with a frying pan. People are poisoned by candy which turns their facial hair into different colors and one child even grows a mustache. People are seen throwing things around a shop and destroying it. A fire breaks out in a candy shop and destroys everything inside. A couple people almost drown in chocolate. Someone is on a boat that explodes (the person is okay).

Profanity: G*d, (1) Geez (1)

Drug Content: A chief of police is successfully tempted into accepting a chocolate bribe because he’s addicted to it. His character grows fatter and fatter throughout the film; in fact, he talks about chocolate like someone might talk about a drug, saying he needs more to get the “same hit” he got earlier. In Willy Wonka’s world, it seems people can get heavily addicted to chocolate (to which those 500 “chocoholic” monks lend additional credence). A character technically drugs a couple people with his chocolate, as well. For example, he gives a man a chocolate that simulates a full course of various alcohols (the effects of which, we should note, the man is completely unaware of). It culminates with the man eventually falling unconscious after calling an ex-girlfriend in his drunken stupor.

Alcohol: We see an Oompa Loompa fixing himself a cocktail. We hear a couple other comments about alcohol, too.

Sex: A character states, “thankful for the ankle, pleased for knees, and if you want to make her sigh, show her some thighs.” We later see a man wearing lederhosen trying to entice a woman. He tries to bend over in his lederhosen to emphasize his rear end. The man is later seen wearing feminine pajamas. As part of a dance number, someone slaps their rear. A man and a woman kiss. We hear a reference to using money to buy lingerie.

Other: A woman tricks a man into signing a contract with fine print. Someone passes gas (as part of a transition scene). Someone mentions that a bug that is inside of the chocolate people eat will eventually come out of people’s rear ends.

Inaccurate Portrayals of Christianity: A church is shown, in this film, as incredibly corrupt, with a very corrupt cleric who is addicted to chocolate, and chocoholic monks. *MINOR SPOILER* Their jobs are to safeguard the chocolate vault of the three Chocolate Giants (Slugworth, etc.) located beneath the church.*END MINOR SPOILER*

There are several, somewhat offensive, pokes at Christianity and religion at times in the film, which will make some Christians uncomfortable for sure. In one scene, the church is scheduled to host a funeral, and Father Julius warns the 500 monks that the wife attending is actually pious, so they need to act the part. He also tells the monks that they will one day be judged for their sins, “but it’s not going to be today—amen!” Quotes from the corrupt cleric include statements like, “I sold my soul for thirty pieces of chocolate!” and “I’m a weak and wicked chocoholic!”

“Wonka” is a story about having large hopes and dreams, sure, but it’s also about never giving up hope when all hope seems lost. Wonka walks into London with a large dream and ends up in the sweathouse and in the dumps. He has enemies from all around coming after him, hoping to see him fail. Most in his predicament would simply give up and say, “This is the hand I’ve been dealt.” But throughout the film we watch as Wonka continues to take a positive outlook on each and every situation he’s provided.

As a Christian, we’re sure to have struggles, trials and temptations thrown at us. There are times we are going to feel like the whole world is against us, and we will ask God, “Why?” But as Christians we are asked to trust God, in the thick and the thin, the good, the bad, the in-between.

“ Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with > thanksgiving , present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus .” — Philippians 4:6-7

We also must remember we are not only fighting ourselves but spiritual enemies in the process…

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness , against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” — Ephesians 6:12

Trusting God seems hard, but in truth, it isn’t when God is for us.

“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” — Romans 8:31

John reminds of this….

“Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world .” — 1 John 4:4
“We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning , but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.” — 1 John 5:18

Closing Thoughts

“Wonka” in many respects is like one of their Scrumdiddlyumptious bars: there’s some sweet heartwarming moments (much like the toffee in the bar), some crispy and edgy moments to the film (much like the cookie in the bar), and some crunchy and not so wonderful moments (much like the peanuts in the bar, if you’re someone who doesn’t like peanuts). Altogether, though, “Wonka” works because it’s a story that entertains both young and old, with a heartwarming message of being true to yourself, true to others, and chasing one’s dream.

Of course, sadly, like expired candy, “Wonka” has content that is less than to be desired: some sexual innuendo and content, alcohol and drug references and mild to moderate amounts of violence. Additionally, there are some negative stereotypes of Christianity on display (these scenes never last more than 10-15 minutes of the total screen time, but nevertheless deserve mentioning.)

I believe “Wonka” to be a fairly safe and enjoyable film for most families to view. It’s not perfect, by any stretch of the imagination (see what I did there?), but its hard to find many children’s films these days that are squeaky clean. All in all, I recommend this film for older children, teens and adults, but parental viewing is recommended before allowing your children to see it due to the above mentioned content.

The 8 Best Christian Movies on Netflix

The 8 Best Christian Movies on Netflix

You don’t have to look very hard to find crude content on Netflix. It’s so bad, in fact, that a 2023 Parents Television and Media Council study found that 62 percent of Netflix titles are rated TV-MA for mature, while only 14 percent are rated TV-PG.

But perhaps surprisingly, you don’t have to look very hard to find solid Christian content on Netflix, either. In fact, Netflix has quietly compiled one of the most impressive libraries of faith-based titles in recent months, with a mixture of hit movies, under-the-radar titles, and even a few toe-tapping musicals.

Of course, if faith-based movies are your primary form of entertainment, then you’d be better served to subscribe to a different service altogether.

But if you already subscribe to Netflix and enjoy Christian films, then you’ve come to the right place.

Here are the eight best Christian movies streaming on Netflix:

Johnathan Roumie in Jesus Revolution, things to know about Jesus Revolution

1. Jesus Revolution

A straight-laced pastor welcomes “hippie” Christians into his small church and sparks a nationwide revival known as the Jesus Movement. The film tells the 1960s/70s-era true story of California pastor Chuck Smith, who befriends a young Jesus-loving hippie named ‎Lonnie Frisbee and the decade’s flower children. Smith loses a few members but gains far more. (A young Greg Laurie is among those who are portrayed in the film.) This Kingdom Story Company film earned an A+ CinemaScore from moviegoers. It stars Joel Courtney, Jonathan Roumie, and Kimberly Williams-Paisley. Rated PG-13 for strong drug content involving teens and some thematic elements.

Dennis Quad in I can only imagine,

2. I Can Only Imagine

A young man leaves his abusive home to chase his dreams of becoming a Christian singer, only to watch the dad he hated turn to Christ late in life. The film tells the true story of Mercy Me’s Bart Millard, who penned his most famous song -- also called I Can Only Imagine -- following his father’s death. This 2018 film stars John Michael Finley, Madeline Carroll, and Dennis Quaid, and was a surprising hit, grossing $83 million domestically. It received an A+ CinemaScore and was the first major hit for the company behind it, Kingdom Story. Rated PG for thematic elements including some violence.

Blue Miracle

3. Blue Miracle

A washed-up fisherman teams up with a group of boys at an angling tournament with hopes of saving their orphanage. It’s based on a true story and follows the tale of the Casa Hogar orphanage, which is located along Mexico’s coast and faces closure due to unpaid bills. The orphanage is thrown a lifeline when the Bisbee’s Black & Blue Fishing Tournament, reeling from a hurricane, pairs a past champion with Omar, the head of Casa Hogar, who is driven by his faith . It stars Jimmy Gonzales and Dennis Quaid and is rated TV-PG for minor language.

Anna Sophia Rob on a surf board in 'Soul Surfer'

4. Soul Surfer

A courageous young teen returns to competitive surfing after losing her arm in a shark attack. It’s the true story of Bethany Hamilton, a well-known professional surfer who was 13 years old when she lost her left arm in an accident that seemingly ended her career. She and her family, though, refused to abandon her dreams. It stars Anna Sophia Robb, Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt, and Carrie Underwood and was nominated for a Teen Choice Award, a People’s Choice Award, and an ESPY. It also received an A+ CinemaScore from moviegoers. Rated PG for an intense accident sequence and some thematic material.

The Hill, Things to know about The Hill

5. The Hill

A sports-loving boy overcomes a disability to play professional baseball. The film tells the true story of Rickey Hill, a preacher’s son who was born with a degenerative spinal disease and wore leg braces but developed an uncanny talent to hit baseballs -- even though he practiced with nothing more than rocks and a stick. It won Best Family Feature Film at the Family Film and TV Awards, edging Barbie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. It stars Dennis Quaid and Colin Ford and is rated PG for thematic content, minor language, and smoking throughout.

Two main characters dancing in A Week Away, A Week Away still

6. A Week Away

A troubled teenage boy finds faith and romance at a church summer camp. This teen-centric  film has the catchy sound and style of a Disney musical with a message about life straight from Scripture. Still, it’s not heavy-handed. It stars Kevin Quinn, Bailee Madison, Sherri Shepherd, and David Koechner and includes new versions of well-known songs from Steven Curtis Chapman, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, and For King and Country. It’s a favorite movie among my family and friends. Rated PG.

Big George Foreman

7. Big George Foreman

A minister and ex-boxer gets back in the ring with the goal of winning enough bouts to save his youth center. The  movie tells the true story of former heavyweight champion George Foreman, who won the title in the 1970s before retiring in order to launch a youth ministry. When Foreman’s bank account ran dry, he got back into shape and re-launched his boxing career with his eyes set on another championship. Khris Davis, who portrays Foreman, is phenomenal. Rated PG-13 for some sports violence.

Still from 'Journey to Bethlehem;'

8. Journey to Bethlehem

A young woman is told she will give birth to the Savior of the world. It’s a pop-style  musical about the Nativity story. It features several well-known faces from Christian music, including For King and Country’s Joel Smallbone, CCM artist Moriah, and Grammy winner/Christian hip hop artist Lecrae. Adam Anders, who received Grammy nominations for Glee and Rock of Ages, directed it and co-wrote the screenplay and the music. He previously produced music for The Passion (2016) and Son of God (2014). My kids love this film. Rated PG for thematic elements.

Other faith -centric titles worth watching on Netflix: The Chosen ,  Tyson’s Run, Greater, Forgiven, The Two Popes, Testament: The Story of Moses.

Updated: April 2024.

Fallout First Reviews: A 'Violent, Fun, Emotional, Epic' Video Game Adaptation, Critics Say

Critics say prime video's new series benefits from strong storytelling, committed performances, and a deft balance of tone, making it one of the best video game adaptations ever..

TAGGED AS: First Reviews , streaming , television , TV

Fallout is the latest video game adaptation to hit the small screen. Created by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner , and executive produced by Westworld ‘s Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy , the eight episode series, inspired by the hit game franchise from Bethesda Softworks drops on Wednesday, April 10 to Amazon Prime Video.

The post-apocalyptic series stars Ella Purnell as Lucy; Aaron Moten as Maximus; and Walton Goggins as The Ghoul. Joining them is an ensemble cast that includes Kyle MacLachlan , Sarita Choudhury , Michael Emerson , Leslie Uggams , Zach Cherry , Moises Arias and Johnny Pemberton , among others.

With nearly three decades of lore under its belt, the video game franchise has drawn a massive fanbase. Needless to say, there’s a lot of hype surrounding the new series. Does it live up to expectations? Here’s what critics are saying about Fallout :

How does it compare to the video games?

movie reviews for christian families

Prime Video’s TV adaptation of Fallout does something the games in the legendary franchise never have—put storytelling above all else. — Bernard Boo, Den of Geek
Fallout is the new standard for video game adaptations. This series is violent, fun, emotional, epic, and just plain awesome. — Alex Maidy, JoBlo’s Movie Network
Opting for a new narrative that simply takes place in the Fallout  world, the series is a mix of adventure and puzzle-box mystery, with more than enough action scenes to satisfy the RPG faithful. It’s fun, and only occasionally overcomplicated. — Kelly Lawler, USA Today
Fallout takes the ideas of the games and crafts its own story in an already interesting world. Nails the satire, the wackiness, and about everything a fan could want. — Zach Pope, Zach Pope Reviews
Bodies fly, heads explode, and video game logic reigns triumphant. — Niv M. Sultan, Slant Magazine

How is the cast?

movie reviews for christian families

All of the performances are great; Purnell is a strong, loveably naive lead, while Moten delivers a fascinatingly, sort-of loathsome turn. Excusing the wonderful pooch that plays CX404, aka Four, Goggins is the runaway MVP, an agent of chilly, smooth-talking chaos somewhere between John Marston and Clarence Boddicker. — Cameron Frew, Dexerto
“I hate it up here,” Lucy mutters early on, and given the horrors to which she’s subjected, nobody could blame her. Yet her quest not only involves no shortage of carnage but also insights into her community and its origins, as well as encounters (some relatively brief) with a strong array of co-stars, including Moisés Arias, Kyle MacLachlan, Sarita Choudhury, Michael Emerson, and Leslie Uggams. — Brian Lowry, CNN
The Ghoul serves as the perfect foil for Lucy and Maximus, with Goggins deploying megatons’ worth of weary charisma in his performance as Fallout’ s resident lone wolf, black hat archetype. — Belen Edwards, Mashable
Emancipation’s Aaron Moten and And Just Like That… standout Sarita Choudhury nail the determined, world-weary drive that propels their characters forward while Justified’ s Walton Goggins gives one of his best performances yet as Cooper Howard, a mutated ghoul of a gunslinger who gives everyone a hard time with biting quips and searing bullet work. — David Opie, Digital Spy

How’s the writing and world-building?

movie reviews for christian families

The show’s creators have done such an impeccable job fleshing out the world of Fallout that it feels like the characters are treading stories and quests you’ve experienced yourself in one way or another. — Tanner Dedmon, ComicBook.com
Story-wise, Fallout  smartly eschews trying to adapt specific storylines or side-quests from any of the games, but rather concocts a new one set in the rich and familiar landscape. — Brian Lloyd, entertainment.ie
There are plenty of Easter eggs, as you might expect from a video game adaptation, but Fallout manages to make them seem like part of the world, too. It all feels real and believable as pieces of a whole existence that these people have scraped together, which goes a long way toward helping the show’s humor land. Even the Easter eggs feel carefully designed to fit into the world and the lives of the characters, rather than drawing focus away from them or sticking out as a glaring distraction. — Austen Goslin, Polygon

Do the violence and humor work?

movie reviews for christian families

It’s strong, it’s goddamn hilarious, and it highlights exactly how to swing for the fences while still knowing where Homebase is. It may be a new series, but Fallout is an instant classic of the streaming age. — Kate Sánchez, But Why Tho? A Geek Community
A bright and funny apocalypse filled with dark punchlines and bursts of ultra-violence, Fallout is among the best video game adaptations ever made. — Matt Purslow, IGN Movies
Finding a tonal balance between the drama and the comedy is a razor’s edge, but Fallout  makes it look effortless. As a result, spending time in this hardened world is as fun, engaging, and engrossing as the games. — William Goodman, TheWrap
It’s an equal parts funny and nightmarish show that, like its protagonist, isn’t content to live inside a projection of the past. — Kambole Campbell, Empire Magazine
Crucially, these laugh-out-loud moments of disbelief don’t detract from the harsh reality of this world, which is perhaps even more violent than you might expect, especially for newbies to this franchise. — David Opie, Digital Spy

Any final thoughts?

movie reviews for christian families

Fallout is a clever, twisted apocalyptic odyssey that soars as both a video game adaptation and a standalone series. — Lauren Coates, The Spool
For those who have never played the Fallout series, especially those of the time-strapped ilk who can’t just pour hundreds of hours into a game, they should give Prime Video’s Fallout a go. — Howard Waldstein, CBR
Fallout is both totally rad and an absolute blast. — Neil Armstrong, BBC.com
The show’s clearly committed to being the definitive Fallout adaptation, a love letter to fans, no question, while still opening the vault door to welcome in just about everyone else brave enough to step inside. — Jon Negroni, TV Line
There’s really nothing like Fallout on television right now, and that’s ultimately a good thing. — Therese Lacson, Collider

Parents need to know that Civil War is a grim, gruesome dystopian war drama set during an imagined Second Civil War in the United States. Seen through the eyes and lenses of a team of combat journalists (Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagoner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson), the wartime violence is raw,…

Positive Messages

This cautionary tale about the horrors of a future civil war underlines the importance of a free press and warns viewers that when a polarized country loses the ability to communicate, brutality ensues.

Positive Role Models

War photographer Lee demonstrates both bravery and the ability to compartmentalize. When a younger aspiring photographer wants to follow in her footsteps, she warns against it but winds up mentoring and protecting her. Joel is friendly and welcoming, using his easygoing nature and charm to manage complicated situations. Veteran journalist Sammy shares wisdom and insights.

Diverse Representations

Primary characters include two White female war photographers (Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny), and two male war reporters (Brazilian actor Wagoner Moura and Black actor Stephen McKinley Henderson). They range in age from around 20 to in their 70s; one walks with a cane. They connect with journalist friends played by Taiwanese Canadian actor Nelson Lee and Asian American actor Evan Lai. As the group encounters dangerous battles and military and war conflicts, soldiers from a wide range of skin colors and genders are shown. When reflecting on her work experience, Dunst's character flashes back to war zones she's been across the globe, including countries where residents primarily have Black and Brown skin. The president's spokesperson is a Black woman.

Violence & Scariness

Intense gruesome, bloody, deadly, and visually disturbing violence. Frequent gunfire, including shootings at close range. Hangings. Close ups of open, gaping wounds. A suicide bomber detonates, with bodies flying in slow motion. Camera holds on a moment of a person being set on fire and burning alive. Police in riot gear confront protesters and use clubs. Newsreel-style footage of street battles. Dead bodies stacked up, lying in the street, and being dumped. Assault weapons used frequently, Snipers. Extensive battle sequences. A political leader is murdered. Executions of hostages. Vomiting. Racially motivated murder. Execution of political figureheads. Destruction of symbols of democracy. Dangerous stunt of transferring cars in motion through the passenger windows, made to look fun.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Civil War is a grim, gruesome dystopian war drama set during an imagined Second Civil War in the United States. Seen through the eyes and lenses of a team of combat journalists ( Kirsten Dunst , Cailee Spaeny , Wagoner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson), the wartime violence is raw, gory, intense, and terrifying: Bombs catapult bodies through the air, a captive is lit on fire and burns alive, torture victims are strung up (with an eyeball barely in its socket), and assault rifles fire constantly, sometimes at close range. Bloody and maimed dead bodies are seen throughout, including hanging off bridges, stacked in a pit, and being dumped from a truck. Language is very strong throughout ("d--k," "s--t," "f--k," "Jesus," and more). The journalists smoke cigarettes, and one smokes a joint. Characters drink, sometimes from the bottle, and there's vomiting. Dunst's jaded war photographer, Lee Smith, has hardened from the horrors that she's witnessed over the decades, and writer-director Alex Garland shows viewers the worst of it -- making clear the traumatizing toll this type of career path can take, but also underlining the importance of a free press and warning viewers that when a polarized country loses the ability to communicate, brutality ensues. Very timely and important message

Ultra violent & grizzly & very uncomfortable, what's the story.

During the last days of the United States' second CIVIL WAR, a group of journalists ( Kirsten Dunst , Wagoner Maura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny ) drives from New York to Washington, D.C., to interview the president ( Nick Offerman ) before his likely removal from office. With the war rapidly escalating around them, they realize the extent to which their homeland has become dangerous, terrifying territory.

Is It Any Good?

This movie has an important message -- war is hell; don't do it -- but it's the cinematic version of cardio: You get sweaty, but after, you're not sure what you gained -- you're just tired. Garland puts that message in the mouth of Civil War 's main character (Dunst), and he drives it home by hitting viewers over and over with deeply disturbing images of the terrible things that weaponized people might do to one another if the United States' internal instability continues.

Garland, who's English, is careful to avoid political statements, with California and Texas united as the "Western Forces" who've seceded from the union. Viewers aren't told exactly what led to the downfall, and no ideology is shared. But, ironically, one of the principles of journalism is that readers/viewers shouldn't leave with questions, and with storytelling this broad, Civil War kind of feels like another one of Dunst's character's war photos -- a shocking visual postcard that shows just one small piece of a much bigger story.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the graphic violence in Civil War. What's the impact of the brutal scenes? Does it make the violence feel surreal or more authentic?

Why do you think a filmmaker from England chose to make the story of civil war about the United States? What were the causes and outcomes of civil in history? Do you think viewers will receive the film's message?

How did you feel about the objectiveness that Lee demonstrates in capturing the horrors of war? Why is it important to have unbiased images and stories in the news? What's the danger of news outlets taking a side?

How are diversity and inclusion demonstrated in the main characters, and in the people the press team comes across? Why is accurate representation important?

How do members of the press team show courage and teamwork ? Why are these important life skills and why is are they crucial to this career choice? How do the members of the military work with them to ensure their safety?

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp’ on Netflix, A New Full Length Movie That Promises To Test Parents’ Patience

New Movies on Streaming: ‘Kung Fu Panda 4,’ ‘Sleeping Dogs’ + More

Stream it or skip it: ‘kung fu panda 4’ on vod, another round of skadooshing for a franchise in twilight, stream it or skip it: ‘wish’ on disney+, an exercise in corporate self-congratulations, 11 best new movies on netflix: april 2024’s freshest films to watch.

Not since Ernest P. Worrell mugged at the camera has a more anticipated summer-camp movie been released: Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp is the FIRE-HOT sequel to 2017’s Woody Woodpecker , a DOA kid movie that apparently scraped up enough views on Netflix to inspire the streamer to grunt out a follow-up. Pray for Mary-Louise Parker, who leads the cast in a game of Let’s All Talk To The Blank Space Where A Wisecracking Toon Will Be Placed In Post; the film is directed by Jonathan A. Rosenbaum, whose credits include the Benchwarmers and Cop and a Half sequels you never knew existed. Add in a character who’s been splashing around in Bugs Bunny’s wake for 80 years, and you’ve got yourself a movie that’s… something else.

WOODY WOODPECKER GOES TO CAMP : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: Woody Woodpecker (voice of Eric Bauza) is just trying to enjoy his pizza when his relative peace is disrupted by a YouTuber – perhaps the only creature more irritating than Woody Woodpecker – out “camping” in his designer yurt with all his friends, his fancy sneaker collection and his boba tea machine. So Woody thoroughly and methodically humiliates the guy, and gets kicked out of the forest for his efforts. What an upsetting turn: This is a world where rapid-chattering influencers can disrupt a harmless woodland animal’s attempt to mind his own business and spew an ode to his cheese-and-sauce pie, and the animal is punished for retaliating. JUSTICE IS A LIE. It’s a world I would never want to live in. Burn it down!

Now, just when you think the plot is going to follow the path of 21st-century cliches and make Woody a viral trending internet star for his antics – remember, you can’t humiliate an obnoxious YouTuber because they get paid for humiliating themselves – it takes a turn towards 20th-century kid’s-camp-movie cliches. Tasked by a forest ranger to learn a little something about not being a loud, selfish, egomaniacal individualist, Woody finds himself at Camp Woo Hoo, run by Angie (Parker), a very nice lady who bases all camp activities on STEM subjects. And that means all her campers are exclusively nerds, dweebs and dorkwads who couldn’t climb a tree or kick a ball if their life depended on it. Woody befriends Angie’s daughter Maggie (Chloe De Los Santos), who introduces him to the goth girl and the math kid and the computer gal, you know, all the stereotypes of every kid movie released between 1976 and 1997.

Woody believes, as any sane person would, that earning a teamwork medal at Woo Hoo will allow him re-entry to his beloved forest home. Of course, being an Agent of Chaos, he makes everything at the camp exciting in a bad way, e.g., destroying things milliseconds before the inspector, Wally Walrus (voice of Tom Kenny), arrives to ding Angie for all sorts of violations. (Like I said, THERE IS NO JUSTICE HERE.) Meanwhile, the neighboring camp, Camp Hoo Rah, well stocked with camo-clad militarized bullies and led by a meathead named Zane (Josh Lawson), gears up for the annual Wilderness Games, where they will trounce Camp Woo Hoo in tugs-of-war, canoe races, capture the flag competitions and other forms of punishment being sold to children as “fun times.” And if that’s not enough plot for you, evil cretin Buzz the Buzzard (voice of Kevin Michael Richardson) turns up to seek out a lost treasure buried somewhere on the grounds. What reigns around here? Chaos, my friends. Chaos reigns.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp makes 2021’s Tom and Jerry look like Scenes from a Marriage .

Performance Worth Watching: The Mary-Louise Parker of Fried Green Tomatoes and Bullets Over Broadway is gone. Now all we have is the Mary-Louise Parker of Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp . We will persevere through this harsh reality. We have no other choice.

Memorable Dialogue: Woody meets Maggie as she struggles with a camp activity: “A whittler, eh? I’m more of a pecker myself.”

Sex and Skin: None.

Our Take: There’s something punk rock about Woody Woodpecker – maybe it’s his mohawkish red feathers, maybe it’s his deep-seated disrespect for authority, maybe it’s his disdain for social media influencers, maybe it’s his frequent use of the double-entendre “pecker” in a G-rated movie. You have to admire someone so committed to being a bona-fide Agent of Chaos. But this kind of guy is fun for about 15 minutes before he starts to drag the cheese grater over your nerves, and you start considering ending the whole party just to get him to bail.

This is a long way of saying that you, as an adult, are not likely to make it through Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp . If you’re like me, you remember the old Woody shorts from when you were a kid, and they were fine in a pinch, when Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry weren’t on TV. They were short bursts of colorful lunacy, the key word here being “short.” Our current reflection on their brevity sounds positively sumptuous in light of this 100-minute resilience test of a movie, which features the following: Raw-sewage gags, an ancient jocks-vs.-nerds dynamic, Mary-Louise Parker getting blasted with mustard and the requisite life lessons about teamwork. There are scenes in which Woody hops into the frame for a one-liner then hops back out, and it looks as if he was dropped in after the fact, because god forbid this movie go more than 45 seconds without the lamest wordplay this side of Bazooka Joe gum wrappers.

Now, let’s nitpick Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp for its inconsistent storytelling, because woodpeckers gotta peck, and critics gotta crit. The screenplay is structured like it took chunks of pages from other movies and stapled them together. It tosses in that hidden-treasure plot like it’s a rock in yer bowl of Froot Loops. Woody finds himself in a classic plot in which he creates all the problems for the other characters and then almost helps solve them. It also looks like crap, with cheap CGI and choppy editing. I’ve always had a soft spot for Woody Woodpecker, but this chintzy movie made me like him less. It has no charm, no wit, no laughs, no hope.

Our Call: Pecker? I hardly knew her! SKIP IT.
