Our drawing room is a large one with a high ceiling. We still use the vintage sofa set which my grandmother got as a wedding gift. Similarly, there is a vintage TV and radio which she uses till date.

Adjoining the drawing room is my bedroom. It is my favourite room because it contains everything that I love. I have a pet guinea pig which lives in a cage in my room. We also have a storeroom which is filled with things we don’t use but also cannot discard.

Our lawn in front of the house has a little garden. In that garden , my mother is growing her own kitchen garden. She is passionate about it and brings different seeds every month to grow them out and use them in our food.

The fondest memories I have in a place is my terrace. Our terrace is huge with many plants. I remember all the good times we have spent there as a family. Moreover, we play there a lot when my cousins come over. Thus, every nook and corner of my home is special to me.

My House Essay in English

We live in a three-room flat on the ground floor. It is in a big and modern colony of the city. There is a large drawing cum-dining hall, two bedrooms, a kitchen and toilets.

There is also a big veranda. My father bought it ten years ago. Then, I was just four-years-old. It is large enough for all of us. We are just four persons in the family. I have one sister only.

My parents believe in having a very small family. My house is built of bricks iron, tiles and marbles. It has got all the modern amenities of life. The bathroom is also large, airy and tiled It has a shower.

The floor of my house is fully marbled. The kitchen of my house is large and comfortable. It is near the living room. One of its doors opens in a large balcony. From there we have a beautiful view of a park and a playground.

The drawing and dining rooms are tastefully decorated. The floor is covered with a thick woollen carpet. There are two big and beautiful paintings on the wall. We own a tape recorder, a colour TV set and a VCR.

The dining table is circular with thick costly glass covering it. The dining chairs are high and very comfortable. In the other balcony, there are a number of flower plants grown in big earthen pots. They include roses, jasmine pagoda tree, Chameli, tulsi, money plant and cactus.

They add to the beauty and grace of the house. We have many fans, air pressure fan and an air cooler. All these things make my house a very nice place to live in.

We currently reside in a little house; thus, my future dream is to own my own home. To live with my parents, sisters, and me in my ideal home would be fantastic. A house should have all the amenities, such as functional bathrooms, kitchens, and spacious rooms. Instead of a large mansion, I always dream of a place that makes me feel happy, secure, and a part of something.

Space and Ventilation: There would be enough space throughout my home and sufficient ventilation. This will also contribute to making the house feel alive and airy.

Garden Space: In my home, there would be room for gardening because plants assist in purifying the air and look nice.

Balcony: My room would have a patio that led out to the exterior, giving me a view of the outside of my home. My ideal home would have a nice front view of a playground or a park.

Living Room: My home will have vibrant rooms thanks to the employment of various colour tones. I wish to have a reading area constructed in my house.

There are different types of people living in the world. Some are lucky enough to acquire all the amenities while some are not. Specifically, almost 80% of the population live below the poverty line in India. Only a fortunate few can own a piece of land where they can build a house or buy a flat. As far as myself is concerned, I am blessed enough to be surrounded by four walls and a roof. It is a small but beautiful house that we call home. It is the fruit of my parent’s hard work and sacrifice.

House: A Blessing

In this world of uncertainty, having a house is obviously a blessing. This can only be understood when the people who do not have it are asked about it. This is the only way of realising the blessing of owning a house. A house is not always defined as luxurious if it is filled with all the latest amenities. Only a roof over the head can complete a house if there is happiness filled in it.

But then again, only four walls and a roof always cannot complete a house. It is successfully completed when you are surrounded by your loved ones. The importance and significance of a house must be realised before it is too late. I realised it later. I had started to understand the importance of my house after an incident.

I have grown up with my parents and grandparents and a maid. The maid was from a distant place and she has been staying with us from my childhood days. One thing I noticed was that she did not want to go home. She worked for our house tirelessly. Even when my mother asked her to visit her home she denied every time. This particular thing astonished me. After that, I came to know that she did not have a proper house to live in. She wanted to spend all the time at our house because she was able to access all basic needs like electricity and water. This particular thing made me realise that no house is taken for granted. I am truly blessed to have a house.

I live in a house made by my parents, with my parents and grandparents. My parents built this house for us with a lot of hard work. It has three rooms, one balcony, one kitchen, two bathrooms, and a terrace. The house is open towards the south and very airy. The balcony is large enough where we can spend a lot of time enjoying the beauty of nature. The house is well-equipped with all the basic amenities. The speciality of our house is obviously the balcony. The location of the house is also very good as it is easily accessible from all parts of the city.

My house is also a destination for my friends and relatives. Everyone likes the interior decoration and the set-up of our house. The perfect blend of modern facilities and vintage architecture makes our house so special.

My mom spends most of her time cleaning the house, doing laundry, and cooking dinner, even though she has been a homemaker all her life. I was lucky enough to be able to spend every summer as a kid helping my father fix the house up.

During the school year, I helped him keep the house clean and I got to spend most of my free time doing what I really love, watching action and comedy movies. I was always impressed with how much work my father had to do to build this house and how proud he was when he finally finished. For the past 12 years, I wanted to be a professional basketball player, and have a lot of fun in the process of being a professional basketball player.

I am a very competitive person and I always wanted to beat my opponents to prove how good I am. During my college years, I would go to practice twice a week and play every single game. My teammates always supported me, and my father always encouraged me to do the best I can. When I had to make a decision of which college I wanted to go to, I chose Duke University because I thought that it would be a better opportunity for me to succeed.

The school is where I got my first opportunity to show the world that I am a professional basketball player. My team, Duke Blue Devils Basketball, had a very successful year as they won the ACC Championship. I made the decision to leave my school, North Carolina because I wanted to live in the city and I have more experience playing in front of a home crowd. I did not play as much as I wanted to, because I was hurt during the first season and had to rest my ankle. My dream was to play in the NBA, and I had the opportunity to get drafted when I was drafted number 14 by the Utah Jazz. I have loved my time at Duke and I am thankful to the coaches and teammates I have had. I am going to leave Duke Basketball with more than my high school teammates because of the opportunities I have had during the years I was there.

The house I live in now is my fourth home. It's my "dream house." It's big, and there's room for everything: books and furniture, clothes, pictures, toys, whatever. It's the perfect house for a three-year-old boy. It's even pretty. My sister bought it when she moved in, and we've added lots of stuff since then. It's a good place to live and it's warm in the winter, cool in the summer, and light-filled in the daytime.

But my house is not a house for me. I'm the oldest of four siblings and I'm usually the last one in my family to find a place. The others have homes already and they're busy taking care of their families. I'm not that busy. I don't have children and I don't really have much in my life. Most of the time I just stay home and read or watch television. And I like it like that.

In addition to reading and watching television, I also like to play games. I play a lot of the video games my sister has bought for me, but I also have many other toys and games of my own. My sister's house is a little crowded with the things I use, but I have room for it in my house. My house has a closet full of shoes and clothes and all the toys my brother has brought home since he was a baby. But my house is not a home.

It's too big and too expensive. A one-bedroom apartment in my neighbourhood is much smaller and much cheaper than my house. Plus, I have a little room in my own closet. I can't take everything with me when I move, just like I can't take all the things in my house with me. I have to decide what stays with me and what goes in my basement. I try to make a list of the things I want to take, but sometimes it's too difficult to decide which things are more important. I'm not sure where my house came from.

My mom bought it, but she's not always been around. We live in a three-story house, and it's hard to find anyone to live in our basement. We can't even make any money renting it out, because people don't even want to visit. I've called my dad once in the last few months, and he said he had no idea where we were, but I know the truth. He's not really my dad.

I wonder if my house was always this way and if my mom would still be my mom if I stayed. She was more, my mom, before I was born, and after I came into her life, my dad started to get more important to her. When she met my dad, she got pregnant again, but my mom and I never got to see him. So my mom went back to her old life, and I thought she would never get to know me. I always wondered if I would have had a different life if I had stayed. I know I'd have wanted a better life for my mom, and I would've wanted a better life for myself, but I had to go and make my dad happy.

I know the decision I have to make was hard for my mom, but my dad's the one who didn't want me, and it's not like he's changed his mind. He still doesn't want me around. I just wish my mom had tried harder, but she did the best she could. It was hard for her to keep trying after he told her no more times.

Conclusion

My house is my temple and my cosy corner at the same time. At the end of a tiring day it is the refuge of our house that we seek so fervently. It is certainly painful to think of people spending days and nights under the open sky but at the same time it fills me with the determination that I must grow up to be successful in eliminating their distress.

It is one of the most basic requirements of human beings apart from food, clean water, and oxygen. However, not many people have a house or even a roof over their heads to protect themselves from the natural elements like sun and rain. This is why I consider myself blessed that I live in a house made of bricks and cement which protects my family and me from the sun, wind, rain, and cold winds.

My Ancestral House in Chandannagar

Our house is in Chandannagar, a city in the Hooghly district of West Bengal. The house was built by my grandfather’s father during the 1930s and is more than 70 years old. It is an ancestral house that I share with my big joint family consisting of 15 members.

There is a very interesting story associated with the house. My grandfather’s father used to work as an accountant for the zamindars of the Balagarh region. They were very pleased and impressed with my grandfather’s father because of the dedication and sincerity shown by him during the course of his employment with them. As a result, they gifted a handsome sum of money along with this land to my grandfather’s father upon his retirement. Our ancestral house which I am going to talk about here was built on this land.

A Short description of my Ancestral House

The house is three-storeyed and quite large. The house is U-shaped with an open courtyard in the middle. On either side of the courtyard, there are long pillars and red-floored verandahs. At one end of the courtyard, there is a small thakurdalan where rituals and pujas of different gods and goddesses are held throughout the year.

There are two large staircases at either end of the ground-floor verandah leading to the upper floors. The house has 20 rooms in total and 10 bathrooms. Some of the rooms are set aside for guests and my cousins who have married and moved away, but frequently come to stay with us.

In the ground floor, we have a sitting area, a kitchen and a dining area. The dining room is quite large and can hold 20 people at once. In addition to these three rooms, there are only two other rooms on the ground floor. On the first floor there are 10 rooms. My grandparents, parents, paternal uncles and aunts stay in this floor. My cousins and I have our rooms on the top floor. This is because we wanted some privacy from the elders. When all the cousins are here during festival times, we have lots of fun.

We have a huge U-shaped terrace – from one end of the terrace we can see the road in front of our house and from the other end we can see the garden at the back of our house. Back when I was a kid, we had a clear view of our neighborhood and surrounding areas. But nowadays there are lots of apartment building around our house which blocks the view.

Conclusion

I feel extremely lucky that I have a room of my own in my ancestral home which I share with my huge joint family. I feel safe and secure and the place holds a lot of beautiful memories of my childhood. It is a privilege that not many can enjoy. This is why I aim to take care of my ancestral home for as long as I can with or without my cousins’ help.

However, someday, I dream of returning to my home and renovating it into the house I dream of having. Transgender Americans are part of the fabric of our Nation. Whether serving their communities or in the military, raising families or running businesses, they help America thrive. They deserve, and are entitled to, the same rights and freedoms as every other American, including the most fundamental freedom to be their true selves. But extremists are proposing hundreds of hateful laws that target and terrify transgender kids and their families — silencing teachers; banning books; and even threatening parents, doctors, and nurses with prison for helping parents get care for their children. These bills attack our most basic American values: the freedom to be yourself, the freedom to make your own health care decisions, and even the right to raise your own child. It is no surprise that the bullying and discrimination that transgender Americans face is worsening our Nation’s mental health crisis, leading half of transgender youth to consider suicide in the past year. At the same time, an epidemic of violence against transgender women and girls, especially women and girls of color, continues to take too many lives. Let me be clear: All of these attacks are un-American and must end. No one should have to be brave just to be themselves.

At the same time, my Administration is working to stop the bullying and harassment of transgender children and their families. The Department of Justice has taken action to push back against extreme and un-American State laws targeting transgender youth and their families and the Department of Justice is partnering with law enforcement and community groups to combat hate and violence. My Administration is also providing dedicated emergency mental health support through our nationwide suicide and crisis lifeline — any LGBTQI+ young person in need can call “988” and press “3” to speak with a counselor trained to support them. We are making public services more accessible for transgender Americans, including with more inclusive passports and easier access to Social Security benefits. There is much more to do. I continue to call on the Congress to pass the Equality Act, to codify civil rights protections for all LGBTQI+ Americans.

Today, we send a message to all transgender Americans: You are loved. You are heard. You are understood. You belong. You are America, and my entire Administration and I have your back.

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.

I built a tiny house in my parents' backyard and lived rent-free for 5 years. It helped me save money to see the world — and taught me how to live simply.

Mckean Matson built a tiny home in her parents' backyard and lived there for five years.
She says the experience taught her how to live with fewer materials and helped her save money.
Matson says she was able to buy horses and a bigger home and see the world with the money she saved.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Mckean Matson, a 25-year-old tiny homeowner in College Station, Texas. It has been edited for length and clarity.

In 2018, right before I graduated from high school, my parents said I could build a tiny house in their backyard, and live rent-free. It was either that, or, when I left for college, I'd have to pay for housing and utilities.

I remember it being an offer I couldn't pass up. I really didn't want to pay for a pricey apartment and split utilities with roommates. Instead, I took my parents up on their offer.

I lived in the tiny house for five years. When I look back on my tiny house era, I enjoyed that phase of my life, and I'm grateful for what the experience taught me. Living in my parents' backyard was also convenient, and it allowed me to save money for the house I now have.

My dad and I built the tiny house together

In a way, a piece of the structure had already existed on the property. As far back as the fifth grade, my best friend and I decided to build a 10x10 fort with my dad.

It was made out of plywood and looked comparable to a shed. Although you couldn't live in it yet, it gave us a good foundation for my tiny house years later. (My parents own 11 acres, and you can actually see the tiny house from their kitchen window.)

Since converting the fort, which required closing it in and adding things like plumbing, my tiny house became roughly 350 square feet.

In total, the conversion cost around $70,000, and that included the framing, furnishings, plumbing, HVAC, and everything else we needed to finish it.

My tiny house has the basics but on a much smaller scale

When you step inside the tiny house, there's the kitchen, which has a love seat, lower cabinets, a countertop, and appliances. For a smaller space, the kitchen has a lot of storage areas, including drawers and floating shelves to store dishes.

There's also a bathroom that has the basics but on a much smaller scale. For example, there's a shower, but because it's in a tiny house, the shower is smaller than your typical shower would be.

I learned to live with less and saved my money

Living tiny taught me a lot, especially regarding materialistic items. In a way, it taught me to be humble and to be grateful for the stuff I own.

Before I moved into the tiny home, I had a lot of shoes, but with limited space. My tiny house made me rethink if I needed to have as many shoes as I did. Before, I thought, sure, I haven't worn this in a year, but it's cute, I'm going to keep it . I don't do that now.

Living tiny, simply taught me to live with only what I need. It showed me that the materialistic things people focus on are such a waste , and most of the world doesn't realize it.

When I lived in the tiny home in my parents' backyard , I saved my money. I also spent it on my two horses and traveling.

Saving my money allowed me to buy a home, and see the world. It also allowed me to consider what's important to me. I don't want to be attached to materials.

It made my family and I 'closer,' but entertaining guests was hard

Living in the tiny house also allowed me to see my family every day. As I've gotten older, I've become closer to my siblings, and being in such close proximity helped with that.

Additionally, being in my parents' backyard was convenient; when living there, I got to raid their fridge, and if I ever needed help with something, they were right there to assist me, and vice versa.

Entertaining guests was harder, though. If I wanted to have friends over, there wasn't too much space to do anything indoors. I was lucky to have such a big porch for us to sit on, but I couldn't invite them over to do other things like cook inside or play indoor games.

There are social stigmas surrounding tiny houses

Through this experience, I've learned that people can be judgy about anything, especially when they're unhappy with their own lives.

Now that tiny houses are so popular and commonly seen on social media, there are stigmas surrounding them. It surprised me to hear comments like, "Oh, tiny houses are for those who can't afford regular houses," or "Those are for poor people," — especially from adults.

Despite judgments, my tiny house experience was amazing and it set me up for success.

If I were to build a tiny house again, I'd make some adjustments

Although I loved the tiny home, I was ready to have something to call my own. I also felt ready to prove that I could be successful on my own, and I wanted to settle into something bigger before starting my own family, so I moved into a larger home.

If I were to build a tiny house again, I'd build the bathroom a bit bigger. Also, if I were to add a second story, I'd opt for a ladder instead of a staircase, as the stairs took up a lot of space.

Still, I wouldn't change much. Living tiny taught me a lot and made me think of what's truly important to me. Through it, I learned how to be humble, and how to live with fewer materials.

Even though I've moved into a larger home, I still believe in living minimally.
