Birthday is a funny occasion with everybody. It has many ways to celebrate our birthday. We can hold party, go out with friends or family. I had 19 birthdays beside my friends and my family. COMPOSITION: My Last Birthday

Every person was born on a day. A person’s birthday comes only once in a year. I was born on 1 st of January, 2000 and usually celebrate my birthday every January. Last year was not different. My parents supported me with all I needed for the day and arranged a party for my friends.

Before the day, my father helped me to make invitation cards and also filled them with my friend’s names. A day to my day, my mother took me to the market and bought balloons, ribbons, masks, caps, etc. to decorate the house with. We ordered the cake and bought wrapping paper. When we returned home we sat down to work. We got the venue decorated for the day.

On my birthday, mother woke up very early. She started cooking. She prepared jollof rice and chicken for all my friends.

My father was also busy arranging musical gadgets and chairs. He also arranged some games like follow the leader, Dumb Charades, Passing the Parcel and so on. At 2 o’clock in the afternoon as planned, my friends started arriving. They all enjoyed themselves.

I have been really excited about my birthday last month. My relatives were also there to celebrate my birthday with me. As it was the day of the weekend hence my grandmother arranged a small pooja where my relatives and neighbours came to bless me for a better future.

I was really happy as I got so many wishes and blessings. Then after the pooja was over, I and my mother went shopping for buying me a gift. My father joined up for shopping too.

I got a really pretty dress as a present for my birthday. I wore the same dress for my birthday party. As the shopping was over I came back to my house and found that the house was decorated by my brother with balloons and frills all along. I also found that there was nobody in the hall.

As I entered the house and my parents were busy getting other gifts from the car. As soon as I stepped into the house, all my friends, family members, and relatives jumped out and wish me “Happy Birthday”. I was really shocked but then surprised by the same that happened.

My parents came along and kissed me on my forehead. I was in tears as I was really happy and overwhelmed. I feel they have done everything to make my birthday the most memorable one. Being it my 10th birthday, I got ten different small and big gifts from my parents.

After I cut the cake I gave it to all the loved ones by myself. Everyone gave me the gifts that they have brought for me. I was really happy about receiving all the gifts and blessings.

My parents also have surprised something else too; as everybody was enjoying the great party my brother who is 2 years older than me recited a poem for me. That was really cute and simple. That melted my heart and I felt that I am the luckiest girl on this planet.

I ate and then enjoyed dancing and playing with my friends and brother. We danced a lot for a lot of time. I still remember how we all were celebrating my birthday with so much excitement. Then the food was served and everyone ate it happily.

I also ate noodles and pizzas as they are of my most liking. Everybody seemed happy. All my friends played with me and my cousins like musical chairs, hide and seek, Jaenga were some games that we played. The winner got some return gifts too.

That time was really fun and everybody enjoyed it a lot. I also received calls from all the people and relatives who couldn’t show up at the party. They were also really happy for me. My best friend, Kavya also sang a song for me that showed that she considers me the best of friends.

She has been with me since my childhood. When everybody has enjoyed themselves completely, then all my friends and relatives started to go as it was really late. Everybody departed by giving me good luck and prosperity for my studies and life.

Then I helped everyone in winding up the mess. As we all were free and changed for our night suits, I asked my grandmother to unpack the birthday gifts. I was really excited about that part of the day. As soon as mom and dad bring gifts to my room I started opening them.

I was surprised that I got such lovely, precious, and great gifts or my birthday. I got an amazing wristwatch from my grandmother and my brother gifted me a diary which had such a beautiful cover. I was very happy seeing such gifts.

My friends gave me really nice gifts as there were stuff toys, books, crayons, paint colours, photo frames and several dresses for me. I liked all the gifts a lot. But one I received from my family will always be the most special to me. I celebrated my 10th birthday with a lot of surprises and gifts. My birthday was really memorable and I hope I celebrate many more birthdays like this.

My birthday is my favourite day of the entire year. Not because of the presents or the cake or the decorations, but rather because of the special attention and love I get from my close friends and family. The thought of being a year older is always surreal and exciting. I don’t normally like to have birthday parties, but my small surprise birthday party last year was unique and very special.

Some people wouldn’t really define it as a party, because I didn’t have lots of guests and I didn’t play party games. It was my first week at university, and to celebrate my birthday, my friends wished me at 12 AM and gave me plenty of hugs. We decided to watch a movie of my choice, so I chose a horror movie. We ate lots of food, chatted and listened to music, which made for a nice, small party.

Later in the day, I went to see my family, who surprised me with the prettiest birthday cake I’d ever seen. The edge of the cake was completely made of Kit Kat’s, and the top was sprinkled with M&Ms. I blew the candles, cut the cake and cheered as I opened birthday presents. I played around with my younger siblings and watched a movie with them.

I think the reason this birthday party of sorts is memorable for me is because it was my first week in a new place. I was very frightened and nervous, but spending time with friends and family because of my birthday helped me feel more comfortable.

Our Mom Is 75. We’re Moving Heaven and Earth for This Eclipse.

Ms. Lenihan is a former high school history teacher and an elected member of the School Committee in Lexington, Mass. Ms. Rust is a senior manager for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

If all goes according to plan, on Monday, our 75-year-old mother, Nancy, will be settled into a lawn chair in Waco, Texas — some 1,300 miles from her recliner in Las Vegas — and joining a great many other Americans as they put on solar eclipse glasses, tilt their heads up and try to make sense of what’s happening in the heavens.

None of this was a given. Fiercely independent and more than a little skeptical of hype, fads and feverish mass events, our mother is not what you’d call a joiner. Like many of her generation, she has seen a lot in life; she knows what it’s like to have high expectations and be let down. But she also knows the coming eclipse is neither trend nor fad. Planning to see it has united our family in a desire to participate in a mass event that is a wonder of the world.

Part of the drive to take our mother to Waco is the hard truth of time. Partial eclipses come and go, but the next awe-inspiring and captivating total eclipse will not be seen again in the contiguous United States until 2044. Our mother is in variable health and disabled. Absent good luck and medical advancements, odds are heavily stacked against her living to see another one.

Retirement for our mom came with familiar features — more time for her hobbies, rooting for her favorite teams and vacations that cater to disabled individuals. But this planned excursion is different. A cruise can bill itself as a “once-in-a-lifetime adventure” and then offer many dates on the calendar for the same adventure. No matter how many exhilarating experiences a person has collected in 75 years, this one will stand apart.

Her body may be broken, but our mother is still the experience-seeker she has always been. She left home at 18 for a college a thousand miles away, traveled alone to the Middle East and never met a boat, big or small, she didn’t love.

These days, our mom can barely walk. She moves around via a scooter. Her back is so damaged from osteoporosis and an unsuccessful surgery that she cannot sleep, stand or sit without pain. Still, she remains the same stubborn and determined person she has always been. Years ago, this meant going to law school at the age of 40, traveling the world as a divorced single woman and starting her own business just shy of her 50th birthday. Now it means bristling when we mentioned that we are coming from our homes in Massachusetts and California to “take” her to see the eclipse.

“I decided I was going, so I am going,” she told us. “Compliant” and “rule-following” are words not generally used to describe our mom. It wasn’t true when she was a girl at Catholic school, and it certainly isn’t true now with her adult children.

As for us, we don’t always feel like dutiful children. Sure, we send flowers for Mother’s Day and her birthday. We try to speak at least weekly with our mother, but we also frequently end up in yelling matches over politics. In those moments, we tell her she has lost her mind, and she wonders aloud where she went wrong in raising us. Although we visit every Thanksgiving and Christmas, we have never vacationed together as adults. The daily demands of work and our own children long ago got in the way, and those yelling matches are wearying. It’s easy to end a phone call. It’s much harder to stop an uncomfortable conversation at the dinner table.

Despite all that, we have spent more than a year making the arrangements to escort her to this phenomenon of nature. Flights, rental cars and a wheelchair-friendly rental house have been booked since last spring. Most important, we identified an eclipse event at Baylor University in Waco that could handle my mom’s needs while giving us the best chance to view the eclipse under clear skies. We asked the organizers so many questions about walkways, bathrooms, seating and parking that a representative replied via email, “I can see you are putting a lot of thought into making this happen for your mom.” It is a lot of planning, but then my mom (and dad) did the same for four children. Our childhood was filled with trips to see the birthplaces of presidents, Thomas Edison’s workshop, Civil War battlefields, the U.S. Mint and more. Now, like many people in their 40s and 50s, we’ve reversed our roles.

Our mother stayed home when two of her children viewed the solar eclipse in 2017 in Jackson Hole, Wyo. They came back with tales of an event so transformational, she knew she wanted to witness the next one for herself.

People who have never seen a total eclipse are often befuddled by all the hoopla. They most likely recall a partial solar eclipse from childhood — a vague memory of seeing a strange, shadowy impression of the sun through cheap paper sunglasses. But a total solar eclipse is a singularly spectacular phenomenon. The sky darkens, the temperatures drop, and birds fall silent. Viewers can stare directly in the direction of the sun without any eye protection for the minutes of “totality,” when the moon completely covers the sun. Indeed, the only time a human being can see the entire daytime sky is during a total solar eclipse. As Dr. David Grinspoon, now senior scientist for Astrobiology Strategy at NASA, explained to a reporter in 2017, “It’s like the veil comes off the heavens for a minute.” A total eclipse is so outside the realm of normal human experience that in the minutes of totality in 2017, we shouted out in delight and spontaneously hugged each other. Many of us that day had not fully understood that the universe could put on such a wondrous display.

Knowing all that, our mother is saving her strength. She booked a business class flight to Texas to ease her pain, and she is sitting out most of Waco’s pre-eclipse weekend festivities. She will skip the planned science talks. Instead, she will rest for most of the morning and plan to arrive on Baylor’s campus just in time to see the start of the eclipse.

We inherited the desire to explore our world from our mother. The need to care for her now is just as deeply woven into our psyche. Over the past year of planning, the eclipse became less about science for us and more about ensuring that our mother finally has this experience of a lifetime.

A birthday should be a joyful occasion. However, it looked like no one had thought of my birthday this year. Nobody showed up to wish me a happy birthday when I got up in the morning. I had no messages or calls from my friends wishing me a happy birthday. My parents didn't seem to understand how miserable it made me to be ignored. My mom gave me errands to run and I was complaining about it the entire time. But when I returned home, I got a huge surprise. All my friends and family had gathered to wish me. They had decorated the house with beautiful flowers, cards and gifts.

The vacant dining table was now covered with trays of spaghetti, fruit tarts, colourful jellies, and crispy chips and delicious pastries. Everyone started singing as my mother brought out a huge chocolate-vanilla cake. I was overjoyed with so much love and happiness. We ended up playing many birthday party games—musical chairs, pass the parcel, newspaper dance. My friend won 2 games and won chocolates. It was a lot of fun. That evening, while I was getting ready for bed, I reflected on how wonderful it was to have such a nice birthday celebration.

SALT LAKE CITY — As he nears his 100th birthday, the oldest-ever president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has created a mixed legacy that some churchgoers say has made its global membership feel more included but has left LGBTQ+ and other minority members feeling unsupported.

Russell M. Nelson, a 99-year-old retired heart surgeon-turned-faith leader, had a conservative track record in his previous position on the faith’s leadership panel, which led many to predict he wouldn’t make any significant changes as president. But religious scholars now say his six years in office have been anything but stagnant.

“He’s shaken up the church in a lot of ways — changed everything from what happens every Sunday at regular worship services to the long-term trajectory of where the church is pointed,” said Matthew Bowman, a religion professor at Claremont Graduate Universities.

Nelson, who is considered a prophet by church members, was expected to speak Sunday at the twice-annual Salt Lake City conference of the faith known widely as the Mormon Church, which is watched by millions of members worldwide.

The president has embraced becoming a centenarian but told congregants before the conference that he and other elderly church leaders might need accommodations. Nelson left the Saturday afternoon session in a wheelchair. He was notably absent from the fall 2023 conference due to a back injury.

“We are called to serve for the remainder of our lives, often long beyond ‘retirement age,'” Nelson said. “From my point of view, this is cause for celebration.”

Nelson, who notes he has been alive for more than half of the faith’s 194-year history, is known for leading the church through the COVID-19 pandemic and urging people to stop referring to Latter-day Saints as “Mormons,” a sharp shift after previous church leaders spent millions over decades to promote the moniker.

He severed the faith’s century-long ties with the Boy Scouts of America, creating the church’s own youth program that also could serve the more than half of its 17 million members who live outside the U.S. and Canada. He appointed non-American leaders to the top governing body and pushed to publish regional hymnbooks that celebrate local music and culture worldwide.

The president shortened Sunday services and launched the construction of more than 150 temples, accelerating a long-running push to dot the world with the faith’s lavish houses of worship.

He also forged a formal partnership with the NAACP in a move aimed at shoring up the faith’s checkered history on race. Until 1978, the faith banned Black men from the lay priesthood, a policy rooted in the belief that black skin was a curse. The church disavowed the ban in a 2013 essay, saying it was enacted during an era of great racial divide that influenced the church’s early teachings. But it never issued a formal apology, leaving it as one of the most sensitive topics for the Utah-based religion.

Nelson has largely avoided taking a position on hot-button issues, sparking frustration among some members.

“He’s not a culture warrior,” said Patrick Mason, a religion and history professor at Utah State University. “But in terms of church presidents over the past century, I would put him in the the top two or three who, by the time of their death, will have left their mark on the church.”

Mason described Nelson’s administration as “gentler” than presidents past by welcoming people and trying to maintain members while still applying a strict interpretation of religious doctrine.

Under Nelson, the church insists LGBTQ+ members are welcome but maintains that same-sex marriage is a sin. It also limits the participation of transgender members who pursue gender-affirming medical procedures or change their name, their pronouns or how they dress.

Nelson’s early actions as church president gave some LGBTQ+ members hope that he might change those policies.

He made waves in 2019 when he rescinded a pair of controversial rules banning baptisms for the children of gay parents and branding same-sex couples as heretics who could face excommunication. His administration later supported a 2022 law protecting same-sex marriage at the federal level because it included what Nelson’s top adviser Dallin Oaks called “necessary protections for religious freedom.”

Oaks, 91, is Nelson’s likely successor and among the most outspoken supporters of the church’s opposition to acting on same-sex attraction. He has reminded followers at several past conferences that the church believes children should be raised by a married man and woman.

That message is echoed in what’s colloquially known as the “musket fire speech,” which recently became required reading for incoming students at Brigham Young University. The speech from a high-ranking church leader calls on faculty and students to take up their intellectual “muskets” to defend the faith’s stance on marriage.

Fred Bowers, president of the LGBTQ+ Latter-day Saints support group Affirmation, pointed to the speech as one of many recent examples of how the faith has made LGBTQ+ members feel isolated. Faith leaders tell LGBTQ+ members that God loves them and they are accepted in church, but that support is not reflected in their policies, he said.

“Our members continue to experience trauma and are constantly met with mixed messages,” Bowers said.

Despite ongoing tensions between church leadership and LGBTQ+ members, Nelson repeatedly has instructed congregants to be kind to those whose experiences they might not understand.

“We are to be examples of how to interact with others, especially when we have differences,” Nelson said in his conference speech last spring. “One of the easiest ways to identify a true follower of Jesus Christ is by how compassionately that person treats other people.”
