Online PhD in International Law and Treaty Law (DILT)

Online phd in international law and treaty law.

This highly specialized PhD program offers in-depth and comprehensive coursework in international law.

It is one of the world’s only two doctoral programs in this field offered by an intergovernmental organization constituted under international law (the other being offered by the European University Institute and it is a PhD in Law more generally, with a European emphasis).

EUCLID (Pôle Universitaire Euclide | Euclid University), an international intergovernmental organization with a university mandate, offers to select students from the general public an external (distance or online) degree program called the EUCLID DILT which is a full PhD in International Law and Treaty Law.

In terms of academic progression, EUCLID’s intention is to offer a credible path leading from the LLM (24 credits) to the MSc (additional 12 credits) and finally to the PhD (another 25 credits of coursework or directed studies, followed by the dissertation).

As a public non-profit institution, EUCLID is able to offer affordable, low-tuition programs.

Academic Presentation

This specialized PhD program focuses on the actual practice of States and intergovernmental organizations, rather than the advancement of academic knowledge for its own sake. It has primarily been designed to be used by professional diplomats working for EUCLID Participating States and can be considered an excellent route to pursue a career within governmental bodies, international law firms, academia, NGOs and international organizations.

Thanks to its low tuition and institutional relationships, it is designed to be of special interest to African and Small States students.

Within certain parameters, the curriculum is customizable, with elective courses focusing on:

  • International organizations
  • European Law
  • Maritime law
  • Treaty drafting and case studies.

Above:  International Law: Lights and Shadows

Admissions / Entry Requirements for the PhD:

Applicants should have a relevant JD, LLM or Master’s degree issued by an institution listed in the UNESCO-IAU WHED handbook / database. Similar or related backgrounds with adequate professional experience may be considered.

Employment Outlook

The EUCLID LLM program provides outstanding professional and academic preparation to its students for a successful career in global affairs at the international, regional, national and local levels. Our alumni have been successful securing employment and promotions in government service and international organizations, including at the level of ambassador and minister.

Faculty Highlights

EUCLID’s online PhD in International Law and Treaty Law program is supported by a world-class faculty group which is truly global in scope and dedicated to high-quality interaction with each student. For each program, 3 faculty members are featured below, and the full faculty roster is accessible via the top menu.

The School of Advanced Study offers students with an appropriate topic and level of local resource the opportunity to undertake a PhD by distance learning.

Students are required to attend our London campus at set intervals to complete an intensive research training module, for upgrade, and for the viva but will otherwise study at their own location. This option is available to UK, EU, and international students on the same basis as our on-campus PhD programmes (three years full time, six years part time).

If you would like to be considered for our Research Degree via Distance Learning programme, please complete the  Research Degrees by Distance Learning form  and attach it to your online application.

Course structure

Compulsory attendance in London is required on three occasions:

  • Induction, the first week of the first term,  to meet supervisors and to undertake an intensive research training course (an optional second week of research training is offered that can be completed either in the week after the initial compulsory induction week or online during the first term);
  • The point of upgrade to PhD status  (usually between years 1 and 2 for full time students and between years 3 and 4 for part-time students)
  • The final viva (oral defence of the thesis)

Note: The Institute of Advanced Legal Studies' week-long induction/research training for research students (whether on campus or distance learning) is usually held in January.

The induction week provides guidance in the following areas:

  • Research ethics
  • Academic writing
  • Working with your supervisor
  • Planning your thesis
  • Building a bibliography
  • Working in archives

Students are required to engage with further research training online as their programme commences.

The programme is run on the same basis as campus-based programmes.  Regular contact with the supervisor is required via video conferencing software.  Students will meet with their supervisor in the induction week where future arrangements will be made for the occurrence and means in which meetings will take place.  Students will need to demonstrate that they have the appropriate local resources, IT equipment and infrastructure before they can commence study.

Students will benefit from the School’s extensive research training portfolio, online e-resources, podcasting, video recordings, transcriptions and live streaming of research seminars on a wide range of topics to help them complete their research degree.

Research modules will include, but are not limited to, Organising Successful Academic Events, Getting Research Published, Public Speaking, Research Data and Ethics.

Distance students will be supported in the same way that the on-campus students are with the use of video conferencing to supplement face-to-face interaction. Within the induction week distance students will be given the opportunity to meet their student representatives and other students beginning their PhD.

To ensure that the students are fully supported and provided with the best tools and guidance throughout their PhD, applications will be considered on an individual basis. As not all Institutes offer the distance program, each student’s needs will be considered individually and an appropriate Institute and supervisory team recommended.

For complete fees and funding information, please visit the  relevant course page .

Help develop a better understanding of the central issues that define contemporary criminology to allow them to have their own conclusions and assessments. Analyze the principles of an effective criminal investigation, including all aspects of equipment, technology and procedures. Also, describe the investigation techniques and the identification and processing of physical evidence.

Distance Learning PhD Degrees in Law Studies

What are Law Studies?

Law studies are academic fields that focus on the legal system and its operation. Law studies cover a wide range of topics, including constitutional law, civil law, criminal law, and international law. Students who pursue law studies typically do so with the goal of becoming lawyers, but the skills and knowledge gained can be applied to a variety of careers.

Why Study Law?

There are many reasons why someone might choose to study law. For some, it is a way to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a lawyer. For others, it is an opportunity to learn about the legal system and how it works or gain skills that can be applied in a variety of different careers. Some of the skills that law students learn include critical thinking, problem-solving, and research. These skills are not only useful for those who want to become lawyers, but for anyone who wants to work in a field where they will need to deal with complex issues or interpret information. In addition, law students also gain an understanding of the operation of the legal system, which can be helpful in a variety of different professions.

How to Study Law?

At the undergraduate level, law degrees typically take three or four years to complete and are generally taken in preparation for a graduate or professional qualification in law. During this time, students take a variety of courses that cover different aspects of the law. After completing an undergraduate law degree, many students go on to complete a graduate law degree, which can take an additional two or three years.

In all, there are over 4000 Higher Education Institutions in Europe offering a wide range of courses at Bachelor, Masters and Doctorate level. With more and more of these organizations offering English as the language of education for at least some of their degree programs, universities in Europe are now of higher quality than ever before. Universities in Europe offer a friendly welcome to foreign students and to give a course of knowledge that meets their profession needs in today’s global demand.

Requirements for the PhD program often involve the student having already obtained a Master’s degree. Additionally, a thesis or dissertation primarily consisting of original academic research must be submitted. In some countries, this work may even need to be defended in front of a panel.

Online learning refers to use of electronic media and information and communication technologies (ICT) in education. With online learning one has the flexibility to access their studies at any time and from anywhere they can log on.
