3 super-cool ways to control your Mac with your Apple Watch

Lance Whitney

You already know your Apple Watch has awesome health and fitness features, but you might not know that it can also help you use and control your Mac. From unlocking to controlling apps and music, you can enlist the aid of your watch when your mouse isn’t within reach.

Unlock Your Mac

To unlock your Mac with your Apple Watch, your devices must  meet certain hardware and software requirements . To check whether your system is compatible, hold down the Option key, click the Apple menu icon in the top left corner, and select System Information. Select the  Wi-Fi  tab under  Network , then find  Interfaces , and make sure it says  Auto Unlock  is supported.

Next, make sure that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on your Mac, that your Mac and Apple Watch are both signed into iCloud with the same Apple ID, and that your watch is set up with a passcode. Then, click the Apple menu icon again (don’t hold Option this time), open System Preferences, and select Security & Privacy. Under the  General  tab you’ll see “Use your Apple Watch to unlock apps and your Mac.” Make sure it’s checked.

System Preferences Unlock

Now, the next time your Mac asks you to enter your password to confirm an app installation, change a setting in System Preferences, or wake from sleep, your watch will automatically unlock your Mac just like it does when you’re wearing a mask with Face ID on your iPhone . You’ll feel slight buzz on your wrist and see a message that your Mac was unlocked.

Control Music

To control music on your Mac with your watch, open the Remote app on your Apple Watch (the one with a white triangle in a blue circle), tap Add Device , and take note of the four-digit number that appears. Then open Music on your Mac and select your Apple Watch under Devices. (On pre-Catalina Macs, click the Remote button near the top left of the iTunes window.) When prompted, type the four-digit number from your Apple Watch and you’ll see a message telling you that the Remote app is now able to control iTunes or Music. Click OK.

Apple Watch control music

Then all you need to do is start playing a song on your Mac. You’ll see a playback screen on your watch where you can pause, restart, skip to the previous song, or jump to the next song.

Use a Mobile App

With a little help, you can control more than Music on your Mac. For example, you can download  Mobile Mouse , ($1.99) that will let you open any app on your Mac and control music or a presentation from your wrist.

Control app Apple Watch

Here’s how it works. First, download the  correct version of Mobile Mouse Server  for your Mac. Follow the steps to grant the necessary access. Then download the  Mobile Mouse app  for your iPhone and install it on your Apple Watch. Open the app on your Watch and select the things you want to control— Media, Presentation, or App Switcher—and you’ll be able to control the coordinating thing on your Mac. Unfortunately, you can only control one thing at a time, so you can’t play music and a presentation, but it’s easy enough to switch between the options.

How to remote control presentations with Apple Watch

Submitted by Fred Straker on May 1, 2015 - 5:32pm

Keynote remote control

Using PowerPoint or Keynote to deliver presentation slideshows just got easier with the Apple Watch. Now presenters can remote control slides right from the watch, with no other external remote needed. Keynote for iOS version 2.5.3 adds support for the Keynote Remote Apple Watch app. Previously, Keynote users could use their iOS devices to remote control a slide presentation on a Mac. Apple Watch functionality operates in much the same manner.

Once installed, the Mac computer and paired iPhone running the Keynote app must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Besides indicating the current slide number, Apple Watch will display simple buttons to advance, reverse or exit the slideshow while in progress. Keynote for iOS costs $9.99 but comes free with new iOS devices.

PowerPoint remote control

Microsoft has also integrated Apple Watch support into version 1.8 of its PowerPoint iOS app . Presenters can open a PowerPoint show on the paired iPhone and remote control the app using Apple Watch. PowerPoint Remote for Apple Watch provides forward and back buttons, slide number, and elapsed time that clocks the duration of the presentation. Microsoft PowerPoint is free, however a subscription to Office 365 can be purchased in-app to unlock more features.

How to use your Apple Watch to control other devices

If your hands are occupied or your remote control is buried between couch cushions, you can always use your apple watch instead..

Apple Watch set against a colorful background of illustrations showing various activities involving smartwatches.

It is an inevitable truth that you will, at some point, lose the remote control. Perhaps it’s fallen into an interdimensional hole between couch cushions. Maybe your cat is sitting on it. Or, worst-case scenario, the remote is out of batteries and the last episode of your show ended on a cliffhanger. The good news? You can use your Apple Watch to control your TV.

The ability to control devices from your wrist isn’t limited to TVs, either. If you’re already ensconced within Apple’s ecosystem, you can also use the Apple Watch to control your iPhone and iPad. If you use HomeKit, it’s an easy way to control your smart home without having to pull out your phone at all. Regardless of which device you want to control, here’s how to do it.

A photo of the third-gen Apple TV 4K on a TV stand.

I’ve lost count of how many times my Apple TV remote has gone missing. I’ll put it down for a second, and poof! Gone. A cursory search of the couch, coffee table, and every other surface somehow turns up nothing. In those instances, I’m glad my Apple Watch is literally strapped to my wrist.

So long as your devices are on the same wifi network, you can use the Apple Watch to scroll through your streaming apps, browse through shows, navigate through other menus, and actually start an episode.

To do this:

  • Open the Remote app on the Apple Watch. The icon looks like a white play button in a blue circle.
  • Select your Apple TV from the list of devices.
  • You should see a black screen, a < button in the lower left corner, and a TV icon. Swipe up, down, left, or right to navigate through your Apple TV’s menus.
  • Tapping the < button will bring you back a screen. Holding it will bring you back to the main menu. The TV icon brings you back to the home screen.

Render of Apple Watch face showing remote controls and button layout.

If you don’t have an Apple TV, you can still use the Apple Watch as a remote. In the App Store, type in “remote control for Apple Watch,” and you should see some universal remote apps. Beware: some of these apps are free to download with in-app purchases, while others require a subscription. They also may not support your TV maker or streaming box of choice. Before downloading any app, ask yourself:

  • How much am I willing to pay for this app?
  • Have I double-checked that this works with the Apple Watch and not just iPhone and / or iPad?
  • Does it support all the entertainment devices I want it to?

Woman wearing Series 8 while looking at a phone

iPhone and iPad

The Apple Watch already mirrors your iPhone, but there may be moments when you want to control your iPhone or iPad without touching it. For example, when I’m out on a morning walk in the winter, I can’t easily access my iPhone or Apple Watch. The phone is in the inside pocket of a bulky coat, and the Apple Watch is covered up by gloves. That’s why it’s so handy that the Watch lets me customize gestures so I can control my phone by pinching my fingers or clenching my hand into a fist.

You can use your Apple Watch to return to the home screen, activate Siri, and view the Notifications Center and Control Center, as well as switch between apps on your iPhone or iPad. Some of these, like the App Switcher, are designed for people with limited mobility to use in tandem with VoiceOver or Switch Control . If you take the time to set up Switch Control , then you can also use your Apple Watch to select and browse through apps and notifications on your phone. It takes some practice but might be useful in hands-free situations. Or you could just rely on the Siri activation to do it for you. You’ve got plenty of options.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Go to the Accessibility menu in the Settings app on your Watch.
  • Scroll down and tap Control Nearby Devices .
  • A list of eligible devices nearby will pop up. Select the one you want.
  • You should see six buttons. From left to right, top to bottom, they are: Home button, App Switcher, Notifications Center, Control Center, Siri, and Options. Tap any of these to bring up those functions on your iPhone or iPad.
  • The Options button is special. When you tap that, you’ll be able to access the aforementioned general controls, as well as media control buttons. Below that, you’ll also be able to assign custom actions for the hand gestures pinch, double pinch, and clenching your fist. For actions, you can select between general and media play controls.
  • How to control your Apple Watch hands-free

I like to use gestures when I’m listening to music and my hands are otherwise occupied. I’ve set pinch to skip to the next track, double pinch to turn down the volume, and clench to pause or play the current track. It’s helpful when I’m elbow-deep in dish suds, wearing long sleeves, or if my hands are messy from cooking or baking.

If you like the idea of using gestures or hands-free navigation more broadly, check out our guide on how to use Assistive Touch .

One obvious use is to command Siri on your watch to control your smart home. If you’ve already set up HomeKit, you don’t have to do much. You can just pull Siri up on your wrist and tell it what to do.

But if you’ve set up your smart home via Alexa, you can still use your Apple Watch to control your home. For example, the Voice in a Can app is a convenient workaround. Once installed, you can use that app to issue voice commands to Alexa through your smartwatch. If you’ve got a little extra patience, you can also program the Apple Watch Ultra’s Action button or use Siri Shortcuts to launch the app. (You can find instructions on Voice in a Can’s site.) It does cost $1.99, but if your house is fully kitted out, it might be worth the expense.

Apple Watch shown unlocking a computer

Unlocking cars and Macs

The Apple Watch can also unlock cars and Macs. We’ve got a step-by-step guide on how to unlock your Mac with your watch here. Cars, on the other hand, are a little trickier.

If you want to unlock your car with the Apple Watch, the first thing you’ve got to do is check if your car is even compatible. Right now, there aren’t a lot of options unless you’ve got a relatively new BMW, but some Genesis and Kia cars are also supported. You can check this list . Compatible cars will have a little key symbol next to them.

In addition to needing a compatible car, you’ll also need:

  • iPhone XS or later
  • Apple Watch Series 5 or later
  • To be signed in to your devices with your Apple ID

Once that’s done:

  • Open your car manufacturer’s app or use Car Play and follow the instructions to set up a digital key on your iPhone.
  • You’ll be prompted to open the Wallet app. Tap Continue .
  • You may be asked to pair your iPhone by placing it on your car’s key reader. This may or may not automatically add your Apple Watch as well.
  • If it doesn’t, you can manually add the digital car key to your Apple Watch. Head to the Watch app on your iPhone. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay , and you should see your car key. Tap the Add button.

From there, you may be able to lock, unlock, and start your car in a number of ways — but that will depend on your model and manufacturer. Some cars, for instance, will let you use “passive entry.” All that means is the car will automatically unlock when you approach, start once you get inside, and lock when you park and walk away. Others will let you do this remotely or require you to hold your watch to the door handle or key reader.

The Apple Watch is a smart watch because it can do more than just track your steps or take calls. Depending on your lifestyle, it can come in handy as a backup remote or car key — or enable hands-free control of other devices. And while it does take a bit of thinking, strategizing, setup, and practice, the payoff is more peace of mind and greater flexibility in how your gadgets fit into your life.

How to control your Windows PC with an Apple Watch

Your email has been sent

Image of Lance Whitney

When you’re giving a presentation on a PC from PowerPoint or another application and would like to control it remotely, a dedicated remote control always works best. If you don’t have a dedicated remote control but you have an Apple Watch , you can remotely control your presentation from your wrist with help from a third-party app called Mobile Mouse. Once you install the $1.99 app on your watch and on your PC, you can control the presentation with just a tap here and there. You can also remotely control the playback of any media program and open an application on your PC.

With Mobile Mouse, you can use an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Android device to control a Windows PC or Mac. The app offers more features and options if you run it from an iOS or Android device than from an Apple Watch, but for this tutorial, I thought it would be interesting and convenient to cover the process with the watch, as it’s likely always on your wrist–at least during the day. And to control a presentation, the Apple Watch version is all you need.

SEE: 10 tips for a glitch-free presentation (free PDF) (TechRepublic)

How to install and use the Apple Watch version of the Mobile Mouse app

First, install the Mobile Mouse application on the computer you wish to control by browsing to the Mobile Mouse website , clicking the Download button, and then choosing the Download button for Windows. Running the downloaded setup file installs Mobile Mouse, as well as Bonjour Print Services if you plan to print from the computer.

Next, open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap the Search icon. Search for mobile mouse remote . Select the app from the search results and tap the $1.99 button to purchase and install it. By going through the App Store on your Apple Watch, the app is automatically installed on both your phone and your watch.

Launch the Mobile Mouse app on your Windows PC. Double-click its icon in the System Tray. At the Server Settings window, click through each of the tabs to check the settings–you can leave virtually all of the default settings alone. In the Server tab, you may want to assign a password to the remote connection if you’re concerned about security. When finished, click Done ( Figure A ).

To quickly test the connection, open the Mobile Mouse app on your iPhone. Move your finger around the screen in the app and make sure the mouse cursor moves accordingly on your computer screen. At your PC, open the presentation that you want to control. Let’s use PowerPoint for this example. Put your presentation into slide show mode by clicking the Slide Show icon in the lower right toolbar of PowerPoint.

Open Mobile Mouse on your Apple Watch. Make sure you see the name of your computer at the top of the screen. Then tap the entry for Presentation. At the remote control screen, tap the button with the right double arrows to move to the next slide. Keep tapping that button to move to each slide. Tap the button with the left double arrows to move back to the previous slide ( Figure B ). Continue until you’ve completed your presentation.

Beyond controlling a presentation, you can use the Apple Watch version of Mobile Mouse to control media playback. To see which media players are supported by default, open Mobile Mouse from the System Tray and click the button for Program Setup. The app lists such programs as iTunes, Windows Media Player, Spotify, and VLC media player ( Figure C ). You can manually add another player to the list by clicking the button to Add Media Program and selecting the EXE file of the program you wish to add.

presentation remote apple watch

On your computer, open the media player of your choice, such as iTunes. Start the song or other audio you wish to hear. At the main screen on the Mobile Mouse app on your watch, tap the entry for Media. The next screen in Mobile Mouse will display the song or audio you started on your PC. You can now control the playback from your watch by pausing, resuming, skipping to the next track, going back to the previous track, and adjusting the volume ( Figure D ).

You can use Mobile Mouse to open and switch among different applications on your computer. At the main screen for the app on your watch, tap the entry for App Switcher. At the next screen, tap the name of the app you want to open ( Figure E ). You can continue to open other apps remotely just by tapping on them from the Mobile Mouse app switcher.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
