How to Write Descriptions for Your Talks and Presentations – EP:098

Now that you have a great title , how do you write descriptions for your talk or presentation? Again, it’s about framing the ideas for the organizer to say yes, which means using the Red Thread. If we write descriptions so the organizer gets all their questions answered, it’ll answer their attendees’ questions, too.

To do this well, you need the Goal, Problem, Truth, Change, and Action of the talk or presentation, which you can plug into my framework. That doesn’t mean you need to have built the presentation, just the pieces.

Open with the Goal, then allude to the Problem or Truth. Next, match the outcomes they can expect from the talk with your authority to speak about those outcomes. Finally, put together some actionable takeaways based on what they’ll be able to do after your talk. We look at some examples to highlight the ins and outs of making each step work.

– Okay, well, you’ve found The Red Thread for your talk. You’ve found an awesome title that combines something people want via an unexpected or ownable means to get there. Maybe you’ve adjusted it for a TEDx. How do you actually talk about this talk?

That’s what we’re talking about this week on Find The Red Thread. We’re going to talk about how to craft great descriptions that people also say yes to. I’m your host, Tamsen Webster of tamsenwebster.com. Please like and subscribe.

I have some bad news and I have some good news. So, the bad news is we’re dealing with the same Problem and Truth as we’ve been talking about titling our talks, TEDx or otherwise. We need to make sure that we’re framing our ideas in a format the organizer understands. Because the organizer is the one making decisions. The good news is we already know what that is.

We already know what the structure of information needs to be for someone to say yes to our talk. It’s the same structure of information that anybody needs to say yes to a new idea. And that structure is the Red Thread.

We need to give people answers to fundamental questions they have about an idea before they can say yes to it. When it comes to an organizer and the description we also need to make sure it’s written in such a way that’s perfect for the organizer to pop into their conference program. We want to keep it, ideally, as close to how we’ve written it as possible. And if we’ve done a good job the organizer’s likely to do that. Because if the organizer gets all their questions answered they know it’s probably going to answer all the questions of their attendees, too. And when their attendees say yes to a presentation then the organizer goes, “Yes, I’ve done my job.”

Alright, so, how do we do that? Well, a first step is to pull together the pieces of your idea’s Red Thread. So, you’re going to need the Goal, the Problem, the Truth, the Change and the Action of the presentation that you’re about to describe. The good news is that you don’t have to have built the whole presentation. You just need those pieces.

And once you have those pieces, you’ll have a description that definitely, you’ll be able to build a presentation off later. And not go back and say, “Why the heck did I say the presentation was going to be about that?” Not like I had ever done that before I discovered this process for myself but maybe you have. Okay, I totally did that. But since I started using this process I’ve been able to nail the conference description at a proposal or the talk description every time.

Here’s how it goes, it’s a simple framework that you’re just going to fill in the pieces of your Red Thread. Here’s how it goes: first, you’re going to open with the Goal. Open the description with the Goal. Second, you’re going to allude to the Problem or the Idea. You’re probably not going to tell them exactly what it is. But you probably, by the way, have told them something about it in the title. But you’re going to allude to it here in the next part.

In the third part, you’re going to match the outcomes they can expect from the talk with your authority to speak about those outcomes. And then, finally, you’re going to put together some actionable takeaways built on the pieces of the talk that you have already planned out.

Now, what does that actually look like? So, I’m going to use a talk description that I built for a webinar that I did recently for MarketingProfs PRO. Their PRO seminar on how to build presentations. And I really wanted to focus on how do you design a presentation from the ground up. Not so much on the slides but really how do you figure out what the idea is and how do you structure it? So, it was called, to evoke our titling descriptions from before, “Substance, Structure, Style: How to Build Presentations People Say Yes to.”

So, “Substance, Structure, Style” was indicating what the unexpected or unfamiliar approach might be. And then after the colon was, “How to Build Presentations People Say Yes to.” Now, I subsequently discovered that “Substance, Structure, Style” is what grand storyteller, expert Robert McKee uses. Had no idea at the time. So, in future versions, I would probably just call this the second part, “How to Build Presentations People Say Yes to.” Or I could use “The Red Thread” before the colon.

But since we’re talking about descriptions today let’s talk about this description. Now, remember the first thing I said is we’re going to open with the Goal. And in this case, I need to set it up a little bit. So, here’s how I did that. I said, “Each time we present, no matter how formally, we’re asking our audience to say yes to a change in thinking or behavior.”

That’s putting out a statement that most people will say yes to. Then, I’m starting to get more specific about what question this talk will answer. I say, “Too often though, we get a whole lot of no. Why?”

So, obviously, since I have in the title “How to Build Presentations People Say Yes to” that is the Goal. So, I’m just reframing it slightly differently in how I open this description. I’m saying, “We need people to say yes. We get a lot of no. Why do we get no?”

Here’s where I (second part) allude to the Problem or the Idea. I say, “Because we push for the yes rather than create the conditions for it.” Now, I am actually telling them the answer. I’m telling them what the Problem of my talk is.

But not in such a way that they go, “Oh I get it now. I don’t need to listen.” It’s enough information that they say, “Oh, that makes sense but I need to know what these conditions are. Why can’t we push for the yes?”

All these other questions come into play. But those are good questions. Those are good questions that say I want to know more. Not, what the heck is this about?

Now, the third piece, as I said, is to match outcomes with authority. I put the authority piece first. So, I said, “Join recovering 20-year Brand Marketer and former TEDx Executive Producer Tamsen Webster.” So, I’m picking pieces from my background that I think are relevant to this particular talk.

If you look at my talk descriptions at tamsenwebster.com/speaking you’ll see I treat this piece a little differently depending on what the topic of the talk is. Oftentimes, I’m going to be talking about message strategy or brand strategy in TEDx. But it depends on the talk. So, you pick the authority that you have and then match it to the outcomes of the talk.

So, this is going to be a little bit more specific now about the Goal. But also what are the Change and the Actions that you’ve planned out when you’re doing the work of your Red Thread?

“So,” I said, “join me as she explains how to build the substance, structure, and style of your presentations that make it easy for your audience to say yes.” I’m telling you this talk is going to give you how to build the substance and the structure and the style of your presentations so we get the outcome we’re looking for.

You’ll see also that I looped back to the Goal at the beginning. That’s a way to reinforce to people that when you listen to this talk, you’ll get what the title promised.

Now, sometimes you need to include actionable takeaways. And a lot of times, in fact for most of the time I put these takeaways together, I really focused on what people would learn. And I wanted to do that in a way that was a little bit marketing-y. It was a way that would get people to say, “Well, what are the five ways to do this?” Or, “What are the three things that most people miss?”

But I’ve recently started to be much more specific about that and frame it in this way. By the end of this talk or the seminar or this webinar you’ll be able to or the audience will be able to. And so, I’m framing some of those five key concepts from a truly actionable standpoint. In this case, I said, “Identify the five key concepts every presentation needs. And know how to find them in your own.”

So, instead of just saying, “you’ll learn the five key concepts every presentation needs.” I’m saying, “you’ll be able to identify the five key concepts and know how to find them in your own presentation.”

Meeting organizers love this. I had a meeting organizer approach me with a talk that they wanted me to give based on just that kind of phrasing. They said, “That’s one of the reasons we wanted to hire you. Because we understood that you had a focus on actual applicability of this information.”

So, I have two more here. The second one was, “Organize your content so it feels like a story even if it isn’t one.” So, you’ll be able to organize your content so it feels like a story even if it isn’t one. Yes, it tells people you’re going to be able to organize your content but adds a little bit more flavor into what they’re going to get.

Now they know there’s going to be some elements of story and story structure. And appeal to those people who really want to be better storytellers. ‘Cause why do they want to do this? I say, “even if it isn’t one” and it keeps your audience hanging on every word.

Because we don’t just want to organize our information. We want to organize it in such a way that people are interested in it, that they’re excited about it. They keep listening to it.

So, the third piece here was, “Choose the illustrations and information that make your presentation and you come to life.” Being specific here about what are the things that they’re going to walk away with and be able to do. So, be able to choose the illustrations and information that make your presentation and you come to life.

When you have all those pieces, which, again, you don’t have to write the talk first. All you need is the pieces of your Red Thread first. You’ve got everything you need to put together a super powerful description.

So, just remember this, you open with the Goal. You allude to the Problem and/or the Idea. You match outcomes with your authority. And you give them actionable takeaways based on what they’ll be able to do after your talk.

1. Three Key Ideas – Presentation Description

To make it easier for the audience to perceive the meaning of what was said, the thoughts outlined in the presentation should be structured. Therefore, it is worth asking yourself: “If the audience remembered only 3 ideas from my speech, what would they be about?”. Even if the presentation is voluminous, it should revolve around these 3 key ideas. This does not narrow the meaning of what has been said. On the contrary, you will be able to focus the attention of the target audience around a few basic messages.

2. Harmonious Combination of Speech and Presentation – Presentation Description

Often speakers use the presentation as a dubbing of what they are saying. But this option is completely ineffective. It makes no sense to give the same content in different forms. The presentation should be an addition, not just a repetition of what has been said. She can emphasize key ideas, but not duplicate everything. An option is appropriate when the main essence of what was said is briefly structured in the presentation.

6. Ignore the Myths About Ideal Scope – Presentation Description

The description really shouldn’t be too overloaded. This is the only tip that applies to all presentations. But its exact volume cannot be inscribed in some universal formula. It all depends on:

  • performance time;
  • the number of facts that you want to convey to the audience;
  • the complexity of the information presented and the need for it to be complemented by specific explanatory footnotes.

Focus on the topic, the specifics of the content, and the time you have to spend on the presentation.

7. Use the Tips from The List Below – Presentation Description

We offer recommendations that will help make the text more literate, concise, and capacious:

  • On one slide, reveal only one thought, this will not scatter the attention of the audience.
  • If one of the ideas you want to convey to people is not easy to understand, break it up into several slides and provide footnotes with explanations.
  • If the text can be diluted with images without losing its meaning, do it. Excess textual information is very difficult to perceive.
  • Don’t be afraid of brevity. A clearly stated idea is remembered much better than too abstract, long, and vague formulations.

If you don’t know how people will be able to perceive what you plan to convey to them, put yourself in the place of the audience. Consider whether it would be interesting for you to listen to such a talk and watch the accompanying presentation. If not, what could be improved? This approach will allow you to look at the situation critically and prevent shortcomings instead of facing their consequences.

Prezi is a web-based tool for creating presentations (called prezis for short). It's similar to other presentation software like Microsoft PowerPoint, but it offers some unique features that make it a good alternative. How does a prezi work?

There are no universal rules on how to write a presentation description. Presentations differ in purpose, format, and audience, and each slide separately solves a different problem. The formal presentation of information is divided into two broad categories: Presentation Skills and Personal Presentation .

These two aspects are interwoven and can be described as the preparation, presentation and practice of verbal and non-verbal communication.

Many people feel terrified when asked to make their first public talk.  Some of these initial fears can be reduced by good preparation that also lays the groundwork for making an effective presentation.

A Presentation Is...

A presentation is a means of communication that can be adapted to various speaking situations, such as talking to a group, addressing a meeting or briefing a team.

A presentation can also be used as a broad term that encompasses other ‘speaking engagements’ such as making a speech at a wedding, or getting a point across in a video conference.

To be effective, step-by-step preparation and the method and means of presenting the information should be carefully considered. 

A presentation requires you to get a message across to the listeners and will often contain a ' persuasive ' element. It may, for example, be a talk about the positive work of your organisation, what you could offer an employer, or why you should receive additional funding for a project.

The Key Elements of a Presentation

Making a presentation is a way of communicating your thoughts and ideas to an audience and many of our articles on communication are also relevant here, see: What is Communication? for more.

Consider the following key components of a presentation:

Ask yourself the following questions to develop a full understanding of the context of the presentation.

When and where will you deliver your presentation?

There is a world of difference between a small room with natural light and an informal setting, and a huge lecture room, lit with stage lights. The two require quite different presentations, and different techniques.

Will it be in a setting you are familiar with, or somewhere new?

If somewhere new, it would be worth trying to visit it in advance, or at least arriving early, to familiarise yourself with the room.

Will the presentation be within a formal or less formal setting?

A work setting will, more or less by definition, be more formal, but there are also various degrees of formality within that.

Will the presentation be to a small group or a large crowd?

Are you already familiar with the audience?

With a new audience, you will have to build rapport quickly and effectively, to get them on your side.

What equipment and technology will be available to you, and what will you be expected to use?

In particular, you will need to ask about microphones and whether you will be expected to stand in one place, or move around.

What is the audience expecting to learn from you and your presentation?

Check how you will be ‘billed’ to give you clues as to what information needs to be included in your presentation.

The role of the presenter is to communicate with the audience and control the presentation.

Remember, though, that this may also include handing over the control to your audience, especially if you want some kind of interaction.

The audience receives the presenter’s message(s).

However, this reception will be filtered through and affected by such things as the listener’s own experience, knowledge and personal sense of values.

The message or messages are delivered by the presenter to the audience.

The message is delivered not just by the spoken word ( verbal communication ) but can be augmented by techniques such as voice projection, body language, gestures, eye contact ( non-verbal communication ), and visual aids.

The message will also be affected by the audience’s expectations. For example, if you have been billed as speaking on one particular topic, and you choose to speak on another, the audience is unlikely to take your message on board even if you present very well . They will judge your presentation a failure, because you have not met their expectations.

The audience’s reaction and therefore the success of the presentation will largely depend upon whether you, as presenter, effectively communicated your message, and whether it met their expectations.

As a presenter, you don’t control the audience’s expectations. What you can do is find out what they have been told about you by the conference organisers, and what they are expecting to hear. Only if you know that can you be confident of delivering something that will meet expectations.

How will the presentation be delivered?

Presentations are usually delivered direct to an audience.  However, there may be occasions where they are delivered from a distance over the Internet using video conferencing systems, such as Skype.

It is also important to remember that if your talk is recorded and posted on the internet, then people may be able to access it for several years. This will mean that your contemporaneous references should be kept to a minimum.

We took the time to find great examples and explain the importance of a good presentation for a website. Take your time to find the style that will prove the most effective and complement your work.

Here are some great examples of how to present web design:

Sometimes, one page is all you need to have on your website. You can easily incorporate all the vital information you require. By using distinct sections, you can differentiate testimonials, contact, about me, and multiple ‘call to action’ buttons. The problem may appear when you present your web design to a client. Without an easy way to navigate, the client may have trouble understanding how the website will feel when developed. Consider using the style on the web design presentation similar to the example below.

The designer took the liberty to slice the design into two parts. This way, you can keep the first impression of the landing page in focus. Additionally, you can present the rest of the page and all the details needed.

In contrast to the surreal presentation above, we have an organic, nature-inspired example. The greenery looks so live that it feels almost like it’s animated, even though it’s a static web presentation.

PowerPoint for the web (formerly PowerPoint Web App) extends your Microsoft PowerPoint experience to the web browser, where you can work with presentations directly on the website where the presentation is stored. Microsoft 365 customers with Microsoft 365 for the web can view, create, and edit files on the go.

The PowerPoint Editor is a web front-end component that creates a browser-based editing surface, which lets users work on documents without losing fidelity.

If you select the Open in PowerPoint button on the PowerPoint for the web toolbar, the presentation opens in the PowerPoint desktop app (if Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 or later is installed on the computer).

Alignment, bullets, numbers

Choose from a gallery of animation and transition effects. PowerPoint for the web supports eight transitions and 37 animations. Dropbox is a file hosting service that offers cloud storage, file synchronization, personal cloud, and client software.

Embed presentation on web or blog page

With PowerPoint for the web, you can embed presentations on websites or blogs so that anyone can view your information even if they don't have the Microsoft PowerPoint desktop app. Embedded viewers show animations, transitions, and audio/video—the same as full fidelity reading view. Font downloading and formatting

The font service is a CDN based solution to ensure Office applications are able to render documents and presentations in full fidelity by downloading the required fonts to the local machine.

When sharing PowerPoint presentations with recipients via PowerPoint for the web, only use the fonts detailed in the cloud fonts list here . Why? These fonts are available in the cloud and are downloaded as needed and installed on our servers. Other fonts, including locally installed fonts not on this list and embedded fonts, will not be installed on our servers and will be replaced with fallback fonts, resulting in content reflow and formatting issues.

PowerPoint for the web lets you apply bold, italics, underline, font, size, and color to text. You can also use the Format Painter to copy the format of entire shapes.

To use your organization’s custom font on PowerPoint for the web, upload your font as an Organization Asset Library .

Full fidelity reading view

View presentations as they were intended to be seen—showing animations, transitions, and audio/video.

Full ink support

Ink can't be inserted in PowerPoint for the web, but PowerPoint for the web displays them as expected.

PowerPoint for the web supports eight transitions and 37 animations. For a larger selection, use the PowerPoint desktop app.

Headers and footers

Insert, edit, and follow hyperlinks. Bookmark links work, but can't be edited in PowerPoint for the web.

Insert online video

Video and audio content plays in Reading view and Slide Show, with a file size limit of 100 MB. Online video can be inserted from YouTube, and media controls can be resized, moved, and deleted in PowerPoint for the web. But to insert audio and video other than YouTube, you need the Microsoft PowerPoint desktop app.

Integration with Excel for charts

Navigation - slide sorter

Slide sorter view, which gives you a view of your slides in thumbnail form, makes it easy to sort and organize your slides. You can use slide sorter view to organize your slides, add sections, and sort slides into different categories.

Offline viewing and authoring

PowerPoint for the web is launched from a web browser and relies on an internet connection. To access presentations offline, Microsoft PowerPoint desktop app must be installed on your computer and used to view and edit slides.

Picture cropping

Improve the framing of a subject in a picture with the cropping tool. Simply click one of the cropping handles at the edge of the picture and drag it until you achieve the picture you want.

With PowerPoint for the web, you can insert pictures stored on your computer, or insert pictures from Bing Images. You can move, resize, and crop pictures, and apply a number of picture styles. More sophisticated features for working with pictures, such as applying effects, are not available in PowerPoint for the web. You can't create screenshots in PowerPoint for the web, but screenshots that are in a presentation display as pictures in PowerPoint for the web. Present online through Skype for Business or the Office Presentation Service

Not available in PowerPoint for the web. Microsoft PowerPoint desktop app lets you deliver your presentations using the Office Presentation Service, a free, public service that allows others to follow along in their web browser. Learn more about Office Presentation Service .

Presenter view

Not available in PowerPoint for the web. Only Microsoft PowerPoint desktop app allows a presenter a behind-the-scene control of the presentation flow, notes, annotations, and zooming tools. PowerPoint for the web does not support these features.

Print to PDF

With PowerPoint for the web, you can print your presentation to a PDF reader, where all the layout and formatting of your slides will print the way you expect. Learn more about basic tasks you can do using PowerPoint for the web .

Proofing tools

You can check spelling and set the proofing language, using the built-in dictionary with PowerPoint for the web. But PowerPoint for the web does not use a custom dictionary and does not include translation or a thesaurus.

Real-time co-authoring

Multiple authors can work simultaneously in PowerPoint for the web and PowerPoint 2016. Real-time presence helps you see where your co-authors are working in the presentation so that you don't create conflicts as you edit, and you can see changes as they're being made. PowerPoint 2013 supports simultaneous editing, but there is no presence indication, and changes can't be seen by multiple authors until the document is saved. Reviewer tools, advanced

Not available in PowerPoint for the web. Advanced reviewer features, such as merge conflicts and compare presentations, are only available in the PowerPoint desktop app. With PowerPoint for the web, you can view, add, edit, or delete comments.

Rights management: Apply and consume IRM and password protection

Not available in PowerPoint for the web. PowerPoint for the web displays presentations that are protected with Information Rights Management (IRM). However, these presentations can't be edited in the browser, and you can't create IRM-protected presentations in PowerPoint for the web. PowerPoint for the web can't open presentations that are digitally signed or encrypted with a password.

Run slide show

With PowerPoint for the web, you can run your presentation with just a web browser and an internet connection. Learn more about basic tasks you can do using PowerPoint for the web .

Save as or Download a copy

PowerPoint for the web saves your work every time you make a change. There is no Save command. You can download a copy, but you must have the Microsoft PowerPoint desktop app to edit a local copy.

Word Art and charts can't be inserted in PowerPoint for the web, but PowerPoint for the web displays them as expected. In Editing view, edit and format text. If you want to apply text effects to Word Art, you'll need the Microsoft PowerPoint desktop app.

If your presentation is saved in a SharePoint document library, then your presentation is online and you can share it by sending a link instead of an email attachment. People with proper permissions can view it in their web browser or mobile device. Learn more about sharing a presentation .

PowerPoint for the web plays slide shows in a full-screen window. Press the spacebar to advance the slides. Slide animations play, but only Fade and Wipe transitions between slides are supported. Table creation, editing, and formatting

Tables can be created and edited in PowerPoint for the web, and PowerPoint for the web supports most table functions. When you need to accomplish something in PowerPoint for the web but don't know how, you can use the Tell Me search feature to quickly find what you're looking for. Tell Me understands what you're trying to accomplish and helps you do it faster by making suggestions.

Undo and redo

Undo (Ctrl + Z) and redo (Ctrl + Y) an infinite number of recent actions during the current editing session in the active presentation. If the editing session times out or if you switch to Reading View for more than 30 seconds, the undo history is reset. Learn more about keyboard shortcuts in PowerPoint for the web .

View and add comments

If your files are stored on SharePoint Online or OneDrive for Business, you can add, edit, or delete comments.

If your files are stored on OneDrive, you can add, edit, or delete comments while in Editing View, and you can view and update comments while in Reading View.

View and edit slide notes

With PowerPoint for the web, notes for each slide can be displayed or hidden. You can also add notes in Edit mode.

WYSIWYG viewing

Edit your presentation in a form closely resembling its appearance when printed or displayed as a finished product.

The process of creating a new website for your clients involves several different benchmarks. First, you conduct your research of the client and their target audience. Next, you present wireframes. Once wireframes are approved, you come to the stage of designing your client’s new website.

It’s easy for a presentation to become daunting if you don’t feel prepared to explain design choices or features. Clients may fixate on a trivial detail, and thus, slow down the web project (meaning more time and less profit for you).

This post is a how-to guide on ways to make a successful website presentation by adding context and annotations to help your client better understand the design elements and design decisions. Whether you are a designer about to share your designs or an account manager getting ready to present, this post will guide your discussion and help you present with confidence.

How to Make a Website Design Presentation in 6 steps

How to Make A Website Presentation

One of the most important first steps in the presentation process is determining how you plan to present your work to your client. Knowing beforehand how your client will be viewing the presentation is necessary to guide how you will create annotations.

There are a few different ways to go about presenting. You may choose in-person if your client is local or over the phone/video conference. Either way you decide to present, follow these few steps to make your meeting run as smoothly as possible.

1. Create an Annotated Presentation

In previous posts, we discussed the importance of annotating wireframes for your clients. Wireframes are tricky to present, because they are the bare bones of a site structure. Clients don’t always visualize what you have in mind for them and it leaves room for too much feedback on their end.

Website design presentations are a whole different challenge. At this point, your design team (or you, if you’re the designer) has likely spent weeks working on these designs. They feel personal to you. Presenting the new designs can often feel nerve-wracking because you don’t know how your client will perceive the designs.

The best way to prepare yourself (and your client) for your design presentation is to annotate. What do we mean? 

Back when design feedback software didn’t exist, we would simply send our design files via email and hop on a call ASAP. We’d avoid allowing the client to sit with the designs too long before we tried to give our best explanation for how and why the designs look the way they do.

Nowadays, we can send design files via design feedback software, such as SimpleStage , to create a guided presentation for web projects. Send multiple designs with annotations on every page to help your clients understand the user flow, see what content you are using as placeholder, what features are designed to increase sales, etc.

Sending files with no context whatsoever leaves your designs up to their interpretation. Annotating designs allows for a more seamless client experience, especially when you use a design feedback software to collect their thoughts.

Pro Tip: If the website you’re designing has more than 15 unique pages, it may be worth setting multiple design meetings to break up the presentations. 

2. Show Examples of Website Features

Your website designs will likely include features that are difficult for your client to conceptualize from a flat design file. Include examples from other websites to demonstrate these types of features to paint a clear picture for your client, helping them imagine how the features might fit in and benefit their website.

Curate a custom list of websites that include the key features or animations that you are proposing, and whether conducting the presentation virtually or in-person, be prepared to visit these websites as you go.

3. Document User Flow

Walk the client through the user flow focusing on the customer perspective. Annotating features like scrolling down to see the CTA or using headers to break up content demonstrates thoughtful documentation of user flow.

Highlighting how your designs improve the user experience for your client’s customers can be a big win for your presentation. This is particularly true if your proposed user flow solves a problem in the existing site or otherwise greatly enhances the overall experience. Be sure to call out these features and explain them clearly.

4. Ask Clients for Feedback with Guided Questions

In an ideal world, clients offer timely and useful feedback. Unfortunately, real world client feedback can be vague, insignificant, and needless. Knowing the right questions to ask during your new website presentation will encourage your client to give clear context to their feedback.

It can be meaningful to know how your client feels about the website and why. For instance, asking them to describe how they feel about specific design elements and what elements they feel are missing will shorten the amount of sharing back and forth. Using the word “feel” also offers an empathetic point of view, making your questions less likely to come off as defensive. This disarming tactic helps your clients to receive your questions more positively.

Clients typically only spend a set amount of time giving feedback, so breaking up your requests is a great way to receive more timely and targeted feedback, rather than asking open-ended questions, such as what they think about the site in general.

Asking “Why?” goes a long way . When a client fails to give precise feedback on your designs, asking them why gives them the chance to expand on their comments.

Reminding your client to consider their customer is also important to include in your questions. The target audience is an essential part of their goal for the site, so encourage clients to view the site from the perspective of their ideal customer to help them offer constructive feedback.

5. Use A Design Feedback Software

The days before design feedback software meant emailing design files to waiting for your client to meet you for an in-person presentation. Both have their own sets of challenges and if you aren’t prepared for a presentation, you may feel overwhelmed walking your client through several pages of designs.

Design feedback software allows digital agencies and freelancers to share their design files online, while providing context and annotations for their clients. So regardless if your meeting is in-person or virtual, your clients have all the information they need to give feedback on their designs.

  • Have onboarding notes readily available to refer to
  • Show your research on their current brand, competitors, and target customers
  • Include designers in the presentation to give more context

Description:  HPV vaccination is cancer prevention. While most U.S. adolescents are starting the HPV vaccine series, less than half have finished the HPV vaccine series. Every year that adolescents aren’t vaccinated is another year they are left unprotected against cancer-causing infections. A clinician recommendation plays a critical role in getting parents to accept HPV vaccination for their child.

CDC is looking to you to make an effective recommendation for HPV vaccination for all your 11-12 year old patients. This presentation is intended to support you in making effective recommendations and answering parents’ questions.  Provided in this presentation is up-to-date information on HPV infection/disease, HPV vaccine, and ways to successfully communicate with parents about HPV vaccination.

Description: The Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program (PHBPP) was established in 1990 by CDC. Orientation and trainings have been provided to coordinators in the past in various formats and venues. This series will combine aspects of both training on the epidemiology of hepatitis B virus and orientation to the PHBHPP in a web-based format. It presents both practice-based and program oriented content on Perinatal Hepatitis B. It addresses an educational need of an importance audience for the prevention of perinatal hepatitis B transmission, the new PHBPP Coordinator. This web-on-demand video will allow both new and experienced coordinators to improve their knowledge of perinatal hepatitis B and program management skills.

The multi-session series presents core knowledge necessary for a PHBPP Coordinator to posses to be successful in their position in concise web-based platform. The creation of this series is a direct result of requests from Coordinators for a web based training course with available continuing education.
