With a constantly growing demand for information from regulatory and reimbursement agencies, Observational Research (OR) is a critical component in drug development and commercialization. Amgen’s Center for Observational Research (CfOR) partners with internal and external teams to generate real world evidence for multiple partners across the entire product lifecycle. We generate evidence to inform the frequency, distribution, clinical burden, natural history, and clinical course of disease, the design of clinical trials, health resource utilization, drug utilization patterns, and the safety and effectiveness of our medicines.

In this vital role the Observational Research Manager will be a member of the Bone team within CfOR, and will be responsible for gathering insights and building collaborations and capabilities to advance the generation, use, and dissemination of real-world evidence (RWE) related to disease state epidemiology, treatment patterns, and medication safety and effectiveness to inform regulatory decision making and enhance access and use of Amgen’s medicines.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the design, generation and delivery of RWE evaluating the safety and effectiveness of medicines to inform regulatory decision making (e.g., label expansion/change) and fulfill regulatory requirements across the globe.
  • Managing research projects involving the analysis of multiple types of data including medical claims, electronic health records, and prospective observational cohort studies.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of innovative analytic methods, and leverage CfOR’s internal data and analytics capabilities and tools to enable rapid, scalable and reproducible RWE.
  • Engage with cross-functional partners to promote the awareness, understanding, and use of observational research methods and enhance the use of RWE that can reduce the time and cost of drug development, and answer key business questions.
  • Facilitate the dissemination of RWE through publications, congress presentations, trainings, and development of scientific/promotional resources targeting a broad base of external stakeholders (e.g., health care providers, payers, integrated delivery networks).
  • Contribute to CfOR’s mission in progressing innovative epidemiological methods and analytical capabilities to support CfOR’s leadership role within Amgen and across industry.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree

Master’s degree and 3 years of scientific experience

Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of scientific experience

Associate’s degree and 10 years of scientific experience

High school diploma / GED and 12 years of scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Epidemiology or other subject with high observational research content.
  • Experience in the design, execution and analysis of observation research studies within Pharmaceutical and/or Public Health settings.
  • Experience in research to support drug development.
  • Experience working with secondary data systems including administrative claims, EMR and registries.
  • Experience in observational research project planning and management.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams.

comprised of highly skilled research administrators that provide faculty and  researchers in the Provost area units with seamless, high-quality sponsored research  administration services. Our goal is to enhance communication and foster partnerships with faculty and staff as invested partners in the grants-management process in order  to deliver best-in-class grants portfolio management.

The Research Administration Specialist position was created to provide support by facilitating pre- and post-award processes for the Campus Grants Management Team. The RAS position will perform basic reconciliation of assigned project budgets, assist with proposal preparation and just-in-time requests, review new awards, assist with procurement and other proposal administration activities as needed, and provide general administrative support to the CGMT office.

Work Performed

Below is a general scope of duties. Specific assignments are based on unit need and assigned by the supervisor.

  • Assist principal investigators in budget preparation, budget revisions, budget reconciliation, or time extensions as needed. Inform PI and/or supervisor of any errors that arise in the reconciliation of monthly budget reports. Identify the need for cost transfers from budget reconciliation.
  • Collect and compile information for grant proposal.
  • SPS data entry.
  • Provides technical and administrative assistance during the negotiations, creation, and administration of grants and contracts.
  • Prepare certain proposal elements (biosketches, other support, etc.)
  • Maintain a working knowledge of applicable regulations, policies, and protocols.
  • Confirm awarded grant/contract budgets in university budgeting and accounting system.
  • Monitor daily grant/contract project activities. Coordinates reporting requirements.
  • Facilitate the RSSA process
  • Monitor proposal status and advise PI on requirements and deadlines associated with research protocols. Monitor reporting and compliance timelines for new awards. Assist investigators in preparing necessary documentation for site visits.
  • Reconcile financial information on Sponsor's reports to University general ledger, reviewing financial transactions posted to general ledger and other documents for compliance with Sponsor's terms and conditions and University's policies and procedures.
  • For industry funded projects, support the Revenue Management process
  • Process JVs as needed.
  • Assist investigators in processing renewal applications for existing animal or human subject protocols.
  • Facilitate required financial transactions for grants and contracts (as necessary).
  • Facilitate required close out transactions and activities

Chief Medical Research Officer

Job summary.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) at the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Chief Medical Research Officer (CMRO), Division of Cardiovascular Sciences (DCVS). The CMRO offers an exciting opportunity to provide high level leadership, strategic planning, and detailed oversight and management for the entire extramural DCVS clinical portfolio in research on the causes, prevention, and treatment cardiovascular disease. DCVS assumes a major responsibility in supporting research to advance understanding of and interventions for promoting heart and vascular health across the lifespan. It also supports research aimed at preventing and treating pediatric and adult cardiovascular diseases, including heart attack, heart failure, arrhythmia, and congenital heart disease.

The clinical trials research program in cardiovascular diseases has grown substantially. This mission-critical research area requires a special level of knowledge and active involvement of an experienced clinician with field knowledge of clinical research that involves patients receiving care and participating in research in outpatient, hospital, and critical care environments. This position requires exceptionally high levels of experience and skill regarding risk management and mitigations, as well as experience in the clinical care of those with cardiovascular disease.

The CMRO will be responsible for providing global oversight over clinical trials research management in the Division and contribute to the development of NHLBI-wide clinical research policies and processes with the NHLBI Office of Clinical Research and will have institute-wide leadership responsibility as a member of the NHLBI's clinical trials optimization and coordination team. 

Specific skills, education and experiences candidates must possess include:

  • M.D. with background in cardiovascular disease (cardiology, or primary care or related field with clinical experience in caring for individuals with cardiovascular disease)
  • Actively engaging in clinical research including the conduct of clinical trials and managing the regulatory, safety and data issues involved in those clinical trials 
  • Experience in applying quantitative and qualitative approaches or processes to programs to understand program success and threats (e.g. experience developing processes to program or systems of care to improve efficiency and ensure success/safety or with quality improvement at a health care institution)
  • Significant experience with regulatory requirements in research including experience in research ethics and compliance requirements involved in human subjects research (e.g., Institutional Review Boards, Data and Safety Monitoring Boards, and FDA regulations and polices including the Investigational New Drug application process)
  • High levels of experience and skill regarding clinical trials risk management and mitigations, as well as experience in the clinical care of those with cardiovascular diseases 
  • Experience in working with practitioners, patients and professional societies/advocacy groups in cardiovascular science communities
  • Managing/supervising faculty or staff clinically and in research programs
  • Speaking at or chairing major national or international meetings, committee, initiatives or symposia

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (RSP) is established to facilitate and manage the sponsored research portfolio of UW-Madison. The primary functions in RSP include: reviewing and submitting proposals for research; negotiating contracts and other funding arrangements; establishing funding accounts for projects; managing revenues and billings; providing oversight of all financial transactions; submitting financial and other reports to the sponsoring agencies; and responding to audits and questions related to financial compliance on behalf of the University. RSP has 92 permanent employees and approximately 30 temporary and student employees. RSP staff provides campus leadership on policy and regulatory development, training programs for faculty and staff, and interpretations of agency terms and conditions. In addition, RSP provides guidance on sponsored project activities to all campus departments, colleges, and research centers. As a Research Archeologist , you will perform the following duties: - Conduct applied research and analysis of maritime archeological resources. Serve as principal investigator for archeological field studies to determine eligibility of sites for National Register of Historic Places. Conduct, coordinate, and implement field research on maritime and cultural heritage based research in ocean and great lakes environments. Conduct underwater research, including scuba diving and/or use of specialized underwater research technology to the research of oceanic sites. Publish/disseminate research results in professional journals and forums. - Aid sanctuary management by writing and reviewing activities, strategies and site management action, including sanctuary management plans and relevant environmental review analyses. Prepare and publish cultural landscape assessments and research on historic properties. Prepare nominations for national register of historic places. Assist and advise on review of permit applications to prohibit activities that impact sanctuary resources. - Promote the identification, preservation, and conservation of maritime and cultural heritage resources. Implement maritime and cultural heritage protection, education, outreach, and research programs. Develop outreach products and policy documents. Represent the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries in professional organizations focused on cultural resource research, preservation and management.

Transcripts must be submitted with your application package. You MUST meet one of the following basic education requirements: To qualify for the 0193 series: A. EDUCATION 1. Degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: - History of archeology. - Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa. - Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development. - Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques. - Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. AND - Six semester hours of related course work in: - geography, geology, or cultural geography; - history, historiography, or historical archeology; - environmental studies; - scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or - surveying; AND - Archeological field school. 2. Related Curriculum : degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A.1 (including archeological field school). OR B. Combination of Education and Experience College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. OR C. Experience Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify for the ZP-3 or GS-11: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-2 or GS-9 the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following: - Participating in conducting maritime cultural heritage and archaeological research, including scientific diving; - Assisting in marine sanctuary site and management activities, including education and outreach efforts; and - Contributing to drafting technical reports and research summaries. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION: Master's or equivalent graduate degree. OR A combination of education and professional experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. (Note: Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience.)

  • College Transcript: If you are qualifying based on education, submit a copy of your college transcript that lists college courses detailing each course by the number and department (i.e., bio 101, math 210, etc.), course title, number of credit hours and grade earned. You must submit evidence that any education completed in a foreign institution is equivalent to U.S. education standards with your resume. You may submit an unofficial copy of the transcript at the initial phase of the application process. If course content cannot be easily identified from the title of the course as listed on your transcript, you must submit an official course description from the college/university that reflects the content at the time the course was taken.
