Volume 13 (2024): Issue 1 (Feb 2024): Proceedings of the National Academy of Kinesiology’s 2023 Meeting: Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present, and Embracing the Future

Kinesiology Review  ( KR ) is the official journal of the National Academy of Kinesiology and the American Kinesiology Association. KR provides a forum for discussion and analysis of kinesiology research and its applications. Although many journals publish reviews on select topics, KR stands alone in its focus on scholarly reviews from all subdisciplines of kinesiology. This rigorously peer-reviewed journal serves the interests of those in all areas of study related to kinesiology—sport and exercise psychology, motor behavior, exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports medicine, sport history, sport philosophy, sport sociology, physical education pedagogy, and sport management.

The insightful review articles in KR address important issues and emerging research in all areas of kinesiology. KR also publishes theoretical papers, critical analyses of significant issues and scientific methods, and position papers pertinent to kinesiology.

Articles featured in KR have touched on recovering from spinal cord injuries, the role of physical activity in successful aging, diversity in kinesiology, and the history of organized youth sport in the United States. Future articles will continue to explore new research in kinesiology and other topics of importance to the field. KR ’s broad coverage makes it a perfect source of information for faculty, researchers, and professionals who want to stay up to date on emerging research across the subdisciplines, as well as students who are starting their exploration of this fascinating field of study.

Issue 1 of each volume of KR , the February issue, is a collection of invited papers based on the scholarly presentations at the previous year’s annual meeting of the National Academy of Kinesiology (NAK). The NAK appoints one or more guest editors to coordinate the single-anonymous peer-review process for submitted papers. The NAK holds the copyright to these papers.

Issue 4 of each volume, the November issue, features invited papers based on presentations at the American Kinesiology Association’s (AKA) annual Leadership Workshop. The AKA designates one or more guest editors to coordinate the single-anonymous peer-review process for the submitted papers. The AKA holds the copyright to these papers.

Regular articles not intended for special issues undergo a double-anonymous peer-review process.

The mission of Kinesiology Review is to advance the field of kinesiology by publishing evaluative, insightful, and integrative scholarly reviews of kinesiology research, both basic and applied. Kinesiology Review encourages the submission of critical reviews, analysis of significant issues, position papers, and synthesis articles pertinent to kinesiology. Integrative research reviews that develop connections between areas of research are particularly valued. Both meta-analytic and narrative review formats are acceptable. Proposals for thematic issues are encouraged and should be submitted to the journal’s editor for consideration. Papers reporting empirical findings from a specific study are not appropriate for the journal.

Kinesiology Review is published quarterly (February, May, August, November), with one issue each year reserved for original papers based on scholarly presentations of the annual meeting of the National Academy of Kinesiology and another for original papers based on presentations from the American Kinesiology Association’s annual leadership workshop.

Publication Ethics

Duties of editors.

Editors are the stewards of journals. Most Editors provide direction for the journal and build a strong management team. They must consider and balance the interests of many constituents, including readers, authors, staff, publishers, and editorial board members. Editors have a responsibility to ensure an efficient, fair, and timely review process of manuscripts submitted for publication and to establish and maintain high standards of technical and professional quality.

An Editor's decision to accept or reject a paper for publication should be based on the paper’s importance, originality, and clarity, and the study’s relevance to the remit of the journal. Consideration should be given without regard to race, religion, ethnic origin, gender, seniority, citizenship, professional association, institutional affiliation, or political philosophy of the author(s).

All original studies should be peer reviewed before publication, taking into full account possible bias due to related or conflicting interests. This requires that the Editor seek advice from Associate Editors, the Editorial Board, or others who are experts in a specific area and will send manuscripts submitted for publication to reviewers chosen for their expertise and good judgment to referee the quality and reliability of manuscripts. Manuscripts may be rejected without review if considered inappropriate for the journal.

Editors must treat all submitted papers as confidential. The Editor and editorial staff shall disclose no information about a manuscript under consideration to anyone other than those from whom professional advice regarding the publication of the manuscript is sought. The Editors or editorial staff shall not release the names of reviewers.

Editors should consider manuscripts submitted for publication with all reasonable speed. Authors should be periodically informed of the status of the review process. In cases where reasonable speed cannot be accomplished because of unforeseen circumstances, the Editor has an obligation to withdraw himself/herself from the process in a timely manner to avoid unduly affecting the author’s pursuit of publication.

Where misconduct is suspected, the Editor must write to the authors first before contacting the head of the institution concerned.

Editors should ensure that the author submission guidelines for the journal specify that manuscripts must not be submitted to another journal at the same time. Guidelines should also outline the review process, including matters of confidentiality and time.

Conflicts of Interest

Conflicts of interest arise when Editors have interests that are not fully apparent and that may influence their judgments on what is published.

Editors should avoid situations of real or perceived conflicts of interest, including, but not limited to, handling papers from present and former students, from colleagues with whom the Editor has recently collaborated, and from those in the same institution.

Editors should disclose relevant conflicts of interest (of their own or those of the teams, editorial boards, managers, or publishers) to their readers, authors, and reviewers.

Peer Review

Human Kinetics believes that ethical publishing contributes to a stronger research community. Reviewers are encouraged to adhere to ethical guidelines throughout the peer review process, as outlined by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). The COPE framework covers three categories of responsibility: confidentiality, objectivity, and diligence. Peer reviewers, who play an important role in ensuring the integrity of this scholarly journal, are external experts chosen by Editors to provide written opinions, with the aim of improving the works submitted for publication.

Suggestions from authors as to who might act as a reviewer are often useful, but there should be no obligation for Editors to use those suggested.

Editors and expert reviewers must maintain the duty of confidentiality in the assessment of a manuscript, and this extends to reviewers’ colleagues who give opinions on specific sections. There will be clear communication between the Editors and the reviewers to facilitate consistent, fair, and timely review. Editors will require that reviewers provide speedy, accurate, courteous, unbiased, and justifiable reports.

The submitted manuscript should not be retained or copied.

If reviewers suspect misconduct, they should write in confidence to the Editor.

Dealing With Misconduct

The general principle confirming misconduct is the intention to cause others to regard as true that which is not true. The examination of misconduct must, therefore, focus not only on the particular act or omission, but also on the intention of the researcher or author.

Editors should be alert to possible cases of plagiarism, duplication of previous published work, falsified data, misappropriation of intellectual property, duplicate submission of manuscripts, inappropriate attribution, or incorrect co-author listing.

In cases of other misconduct, such as redundant publication, deception over authorship, or failure to declare conflict of interest, Editors may judge what is necessary in regard to involving authors’ employers. Authors should be given the opportunity to respond to any charge of minor misconduct.

The following sanctions are ranked in approximate increasing order of severity:

  • A letter of explanation to the authors, where there appears to be a genuine misunderstanding of principles.
  • A letter of reprimand and warning as to future conduct.
  • A formal letter to the relevant head of the institution or funding body.
  • Refusal to accept future submissions from the individual, unit, or institution responsible for the misconduct, for a stated period.
  • Formal withdrawal or retraction of the paper from the scientific literature, informing other editors and the indexing authorities.

The Journals Division at Human Kinetics adheres to the criteria for authorship as outlined by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors*:

Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for the content. Authorship credit should be based only on substantial contributions to:

a. Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND b. Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND c. Final approval of the version to be published; AND d. Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Authors who use artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted technologies (such as Large Language Models [LLMs], chatbots, or image creators) in their work must indicate how they were used in the cover letter and the work itself. These technologies cannot be listed as authors as they are unable to meet all the conditions above, particularly agreeing to be accountable for all aspects of the work.

Manuscript Type

Kinesiology Review ( KR ) only accepts review papers of kinesiology research, basic and applied. Critical reviews, analysis of significant issues, position papers, and synthesis articles pertinent to kinesiology are also appropriate for the journal. Integrative research reviews that develop connections between areas of research are particularly valued. Both meta-analytic and narrative review formats are acceptable. Papers reporting empirical findings are not appropriate for this journal. KR will consider manuscripts longer than 10,000 words (~40 pages of text); however, the authors will be asked to justify the need for the manuscript’s length.

In preparing manuscripts for publication in KR , authors must closely follow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed., 2020). Writing should be concise and direct. Avoid unnecessary jargon and abbreviations, but use an acronym or abbreviation if the spelled-out version of a term is cumbersome. Avoid abbreviations in the title. Formats of numbers and measurement units, and all other style matters, including capitalization, punctuation, references, and citations, must follow the Publication Manual of the APA .

Cover Letters

Upon submission, authors must upload a separate cover letter that lists (1) the title of the manuscript, (2) the date of submission, and (3) the full names of all the authors, their institutional or corporate affiliations, and their e-mail addresses. In addition to this essential information, the cover letter should be composed as described on pp. 382–383 of the Publication Manual of the APA , including clear statements pertaining to potential fragmented publication, authorship, and other ethical considerations.

Manuscript Format

The manuscript must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document. The manuscript should contain no clues as to author identity, such as acknowledgments, institutional information, and mention of a specific city. Thus, information that might identify the author(s) should be omitted or highlighted in black. The first page of the manuscript should include only the title of the manuscript and date of submission. All articles must include an abstract of 100−150 words and three to six keywords chosen from terms not used in the manuscript title.

Figures and Photos

If figures are included, each figure must be numbered in consecutive numerical order. A figure should have a caption that is brief and self-explanatory, and that defines all nonstandard abbreviations used in the figure. Captions must be listed separately, on a page by themselves; however, each figure must be clearly identified (numbered), preferably as part of its filename. Artwork should be professional in appearance and have clean, crisp lines. Hand drawing and hand lettering are not acceptable. Line art should be saved at a resolution of 600 dots per inch (dpi). Photographic images can be submitted if they are saved in JPEG or TIFF format at a resolution of 300 dpi. See additional figure guidelines here .

When tabular material is necessary, it should not duplicate the text. Tables must be formatted using Microsoft Word’s table-building functions. (Using spaces or tabs in your table creates problems when the table is typeset and may result in errors). Tables should be single-spaced on separate pages and include brief titles. Explanatory notes are to be presented in footnotes, below the table. The size and complexity of a table should be determined with consideration for its legibility and ability to fit the printed page.

Kinesiology Review  is a peer-reviewed journal. At least two reviewers are solicited for each manuscript. Manuscripts are evaluated via double-anonymous review. There are no page charges to authors. Manuscripts should not be submitted to another journal at the same time. 

Authors of accepted papers must obtain and provide the editor all necessary permissions for reproduced figures, pictures, or other copyrighted work prior to publication. 

Authors also will need to complete and sign a copyright agreement, transferring copyright to Human Kinetics, Inc. This copyright form can be viewed by visiting ScholarOne and selecting "Instructions & Forms" in the upper right corner. You do not need an account to access this information.

Developing a Research Question Takes Research

When the scope of your paper is too big, it's hard to dig through information and to write a paper wit any depth. The goal of most research papers in college is to seek a possible answer to a particular questions related to a topic. A research question, when not too broad or too narrow, helps guide and focus your paper.

The question should also be one in which you haven't decided on a pre-determined answer. You may find that looking for sources that provide a certain answer may be too limiting. The answer you are expecting might not be supported by evidence.

Brainstorm & do some pre-research

The research question isn't a question you make up at the top of your head. It's normal to start with a broad topic in mind. After doing some brainstorming about a topic, you will need to do some reading to find an angle to pursue, and, even then, your question may change as you find more information later.

Ask questions

From your pre-research, think about questions you might be able to ask regarding the topic. Most scholarly research examines fairly narrow topics and looks at relationships between concepts. One way to limit the scope of your topic is to ask who, what, where, when, why, and how questions.

Be flexible

It's okay to continue to tweak your question; the end result should be that you have answered the question you've laid out in the introduction, even if the introduction is the last paragraph you actually end up revising in your final paper.

Complex research questions take time to create.

Keeping your research question in mind, if you can answer TRUE to the statements below, your research question is probably workable.

  • It cannot simply be answered with a yes/no. 
  • It has social significance/a problem associated with it.
  • There is reliable evidence available to address it.
  • It has appropriate scope.

Be careful about investigating questions that you think you already have the answer to.

The review concluded that there was insufficient evidence for the diagnostic accuracy or specific therapeutic benefit of kinesiology in any condition, or for the validity of muscle testing. Despite limitations of the review, the authors' conclusion seemed to accurately reflect the paucity of the evidence presented.

  • Authors' objectives

To determine the therapeutic effectiveness of kinesiology and ascertain if diagnostic accuracy and inter-examiner reliability of kinesiology had been established.

MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and AMED were searched from inception without language restriction; upper search limit (date) was not reported. Search terms were reported. Kinesiology associations and practitioners were contacted and topic-specific websites and conference proceedings were searched for relevant unpublished literature. One reviewer selected studies for inclusion in the review.

  • Study selection

Any clinical study of any type of kinesiology for any outcome on patients or volunteers were eligible for inclusion in the review. Studies looking at the mechanical measurement of muscle strength or studies considering muscle strength tests where kinesiology measured the ability of the nervous system to adapt to the pressure of the test, rather than the power a muscle produces (for example, orthopaedic testing) were excluded from the review.

The majority of the included studies describe the type of kinesiology used as applied kinesiology (AK). AK can be used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. A broad range of participants were included in the review: chiropractic students/spouses; volunteers (with or without symptoms); people with a history of anaphylaxis after insect stings; people with chronic diseases; dental students; AK seminar attendees; phobic volunteers; college students; patients with mastalgia; and people with recurring dreams. Where reported, examiners included AK practitioners, chiropractors, trained testers and AK dentists. A wide range of outcomes were reported for each study type. Further details were in the paper.

  • Assessment of study quality

Clinical effectiveness studies were assessed for methodological quality and quality of reporting using the Jadad scale and the CONSORT statement. Diagnostic studies were assessed for methodological quality and quality of reporting using QUADAS and STARD criteria. Studies looking at inter-examiner reliability and muscle response were assessed against: randomisation; inclusion criteria; blinding of examiners to each other's results; representative sample of examiners; appropriate statistical methods; and sample size. The authors did not state how many reviewers performed the quality assessment.

  • Data extraction

The authors stated neither how data were extracted nor how many reviewers performed the data extraction.

  • Methods of synthesis

Studies were combined in a narrative synthesis grouped by type of study (diagnostic, inter-examiner reliability, muscle response and effectiveness).

  • Results of the review

Twenty-two studies were included in the review: seven diagnostic studies (n=518); seven inter-examiner reliability studies (n=318); five muscle response to stimuli studies (n=at least 393); and three clinical effectiveness studies (n=115).

Diagnostic accuracy studies

QUADAS scores ranged from 1 to 11 (out of a maximum of 14). STARD scores ranged from 6 to 13 (out of a maximum of 25). Comparators included laboratory tests for food allergies, biochemical tests for nutrient status, chiropractic clinical observations and a mechanical muscle test. None of the studies found a positive effect of kinesiology.

Inter-examiner reliability

Quality scores and scores for the quality of reporting (based on the same criteria) ranged from 0 to 5 (out of a possible 6). Studies compared the reliability of examiners to detect the presence of weak or strong muscles, sensitivity to dental materials or foods, pressure on specific vertebrae and to a phobic stimulus. The most promising results were for the detection of the presence of weak or strong muscles.

Muscle response

Quality scores and scores for the quality of reporting (based on the same criteria) ranged from 0 to 3 (out of a possible 6). These studies tested the presence of weak or strong muscles in relation to foods, a kinesiology technique, magnets and verbal statements. Three studies reported a positive result.

Effectiveness

All the studies scored 0 on the Jadad scale (out of a maximum of 5). The number of CONSORT items reported ranged from 4 to 6 (out of a maximum of 22). Studies assessed the effectiveness of kinesiology for mastalgia, stress, and recurring dreams. All three studies reported statistically significant results in favour of kinesiology.

  • Authors' conclusions

There was insufficient evidence to show: diagnostic accuracy within kinesiology; that kinesiology had a specific therapeutic benefit for any condition; and that the validity of muscle testing had been established.

  • CRD commentary

The review question was supported by very broad inclusion/exclusion criteria. Several sources were searched without language restriction and the authors attempted to locate unpublished literature, minimising the likelihood of language and publication bias. Only one reviewer selected studies for inclusion in the review, increasing the possibility of reviewer error and bias. The authors did not report methods used to extract data or assess study quality, so the likelihood of reviewer error and bias being introduced at these stages could not be assessed. Study quality was assessed using standardised tools and the authors considered study findings in light of these results. Studies were appropriately combined in a narrative synthesis given the differences between the included studies. Despite limitations in the review, the authors' conclusion seemed to accurately reflect the paucity of the evidence presented.

  • Implications of the review for practice and research

Practice: The authors did not report any implications for practice.

Research: The authors recommended a pragmatic single blind randomised controlled study of the effectiveness of kinesiology for any condition.

New research defines specific genomic changes associated with the transmissibility of the mpox virus

Mount Sinai scientists, in collaboration with researchers from the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) in Madrid, Spain, have located and identified alterations in the mpox virus genome that potentially correlate with changes in the virus's transmissibility observed in the 2022 outbreak. The findings were published April 18 in Nature Communications.

The mpox virus (MPXV) is a double-stranded DNA virus that can infect animals and humans. MPXV causes a disease known as mpox, with symptoms that include fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash. Most cases are mild and tend to get better on their own; however, mpox can be very painful and may lead to permanent scarring.

First encountered in 1958 in crab-eating macaque monkeys imported to Belgium, MPXV has caused sporadic human disease outbreaks since the 1970s in Central and Western Africa. In May 2022, multiple countries, including the United States, reported an increasing number of MPXV infections and associated disease, including clusters in cases potentially linked to super-spreading events in Belgium, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

While the number of new cases associated with the 2022 spillover has decreased over time, cases of the disease are still occurring among unvaccinated individuals, including a current increase in Central Africa due to a new spillover. As the virus's circulation in humans increases, the risk of emergence of a more transmissible variant capable of becoming endemic in the human population increases.

"Biopreparedness and virological surveillance involves studying the causes that favor zoonotic spillover and facilitates human-to-human transmission. When we observe significant changes in basic epidemiological features of a viral agent like mpox, it should reinvigorate our interest in understanding those transmission conditions. The increasing number of cases currently happening in Africa, and the 2022 epidemic, should be clear alert signals," says Gustavo Palacios, Ph.D., Professor of Microbiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and a senior author of the study.

To carry out the study, researchers analyzed samples from 46 patients infected with MPXV whose diagnosis and sequencing were carried out at the ISCIII at the beginning of the 2022 mpox outbreak. The team performed high-quality sequencing of each study participant's complete mpox virus genome to determine possible correlations between genomic variations in the different groups of sequences and epidemiological links associated with the virus's ability to evolve, transmit, and infect.

According to the research team, recurrent observed genomic changes were located in areas of the genome that could be related to viral adaptation. Those specific locations would contribute to modulating the viral replication cycle, adaptability, and path of entry and egress. These alterations appear in areas known as low complexity genomic regions, which are particularly difficult to sequence and analyze, explaining why they were overlooked before.

This highly sophisticated complete genome sequencing was made possible through the use of two advanced sequencing technologies: single-molecule long-read sequencing (to cover highly repetitive regions) and deep short sequencing reads (to provide accuracy and depth).

By detailing the genomic alterations within these repetitive genomic sequences and linking them to critical viral functions, researchers provide a plausible explanation for the heightened transmissibility observed during the 2022 mpox outbreak.

"These findings might be offering the first hints to help us understand the unique features of the strains associated with sustained human-to-human transmission, which has not ever been observed in these agents," says Dr. Palacios. "Better understanding of the doors that facilitate transmission of viral agents and impact their clinical presentations will enable us to develop more effective prevention and treatment strategies."

Multiple media outlets, and White House, utilize expertise of UW–Madison’s Hillman

Multiple media outlets — and the White House — have utilized the expertise of UW–Madison’s Nicholas Hillman in recent reports about the unveiling of President Joe Biden’s new plan to provide student debt relief.

Hillman has also been called on by media to speak about the impact of the botched roll-out of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form this year.

Hillman is a professor in the School of Education’s  Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis , and the director of the  Student Success through Applied Research (SSTAR) Lab. His research examines how finance, policy, and geography shape educational opportunities in the United States.

In an article in The Atlantic , “Colleges Are Facing an Enrollment Nightmare,” Hillman weighs in on how the issues with the FAFSA this year may prevent students from going to college in the fall.

On the topic of Biden’s plan for student debt relief, research by Hillman is utilized in a report from the White House examining “The Economics of the Administration’s Actions on Student Debt.”

He is also quoted In Capital Times article , where he discusses the plan’s legality. Hillman notes that the plan takes its legal basis from language in the Higher Education Act, which “allows the U.S. secretary of education to ‘compromise, waive, or release’ federal student loans,” the article explains.

While Biden’s previous proposal for student debt relief was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court, this version is more narrowly targeted: “They were like ‘Let’s focus on a few different groups’,” Hillman says. “People who have been in repayment 20 years, people who have their loans that are more expensive today than when they originally took them out, people facing economic hardship. And they prioritize those tailored, narrower groups of cancellation.”

Hillman notes that he expects the new policies to be upheld in court.

In addition to the above, Hillman discusses Biden’s plan for student debt relief on WISN 12 Milwaukee  and WMTV Madison , and research from his SSTAR Lab is utilized in a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article .
