Sport is an amazing concept that improves the lives of people. Students especially need to take part in sports that they find fun because participating in sports will not only help them to improve their physical health but will also give them the mental energy to cope and study well. By playing sports, students release serotonin and other chemicals in the brain and because of this exertion, they will feel more rejuvenated every day. It will help them to stay fit and to have a healthy and positive life. Sports also play a very important role in having stable and healthy mental health.

Mental health should not be taken lightly. In order to have a holistic and healthy life, students should also take care of their mental health. To be effective your welcome speech needs to meet expected, as well as any specific, requirements dictated by the occasion.

There are six common or standard content items in a good welcome speech.

Greetings to welcome everyone and thanking them for coming along.
Acknowledgement of special guests, if there are any.
An introduction of the event itself and a brief overview of special highlights the audience will want to know about.
Any important housekeeping information, for instance: where the bathrooms are, where lunch will be served and when...
An introduction for the next speaker, if there is one.
Thanking everyone for coming once more and then concluding having made everybody feel at ease, eagerly anticipating what is to come.

Numbers 1, 3, and 6 are basic essentials you cannot do without. Numbers 2, 4 and 5 may, or may not, be applicable. Pick what you need from them to fit your occasion.

My name is April Molloy, and it's my privilege and great pleasure on behalf of Parents United to welcome you all here today.

We are delighted to have you with us to participate and share in this special occasion, our 5th annual Children's Day Conference. Thank you for coming. That many of you have willingly traveled long distances to be here serves as a reminder to us all just how important our work is.

This year our theme is literacy. We've named the day 'Readers by Right'.

Thanks to the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we are aware of 'rights' in many spheres, including education. Article 26 declared it should be compulsory and free for children.

That goal is as pertinent today as it was then. And it's a goal I know we all share - the full development of every child. As a body, Parents United recognizes good reading skills established in childhood as the foundation of fulfilling, and ongoing education.

We are honored to have Sue-Ellen Thomas, Jim Smith and Jane Brown with us today. All three are esteemed specialists in teaching young children to read.

Sue-Ellen has worked for a long time with educational authorities to establish programs putting in place necessary pre-reading skills. Her hard work needs no introduction. The results speak for themselves.

Jim and Jane bring their passion, and knowledge of how to reach those in our communities who are frequently overlooked or bypassed. Their work among disadvantaged English-as-a-second-language families has bridged gaps that were deep dark chasms.

Writing your welcome speech

Tips to help you get your speech right.

When you're entering information into your speech planner:

ensure you've got all the names of individuals or special guests you need to mention specifically and, that you know how to pronounce each of them. Also check that you know and use their preferred pronouns: them/they, she/her, he/him...
double check the remarks you're going to make about them, or anything else, are factually correct.

Use your introduction of your guests/or the event, as a "teaser" for what is going to come. It will help create anticipation in the audience. Don't ruin it by giving too much away! Just enough to tempt and no more.

Keep it brief. One to two minutes is generally sufficient.

(The word count of my sample welcome speech is 357. It will take approximately 2 minutes to say .)

Use the S-S-S formula for success: Short, Simple and Sincere. Your listeners will appreciate it.

If you're stuck for words, here's a large selection of adaptable welcoming phrases with example s entences. Reading through them could help you to find exactly what you want.

What does a good welcome speech do?

An effective welcome speech has three important functions. It:

signals the official beginning of an event . It says to the audience, hush, sit down, stop talking and listen. What you came for is starting!
sets the tone for the occasion through the choice of language used . For example, using light-hearted and informal words to welcome guests to a dear friend's birthday party may be completely appropriate. However, the same type of language to welcome family and friends to a memorial service is unlikely to be. In that setting, people generally expect a more solemn and formal word choice. They could be deeply offended and think the use of casual language is disrespectful. Understanding and getting tone right is a key element in the overall success of your welcome speech.
unites the audience . It draws everyone together in the common purpose at the heart of the occasion. For example, at a birthday party, the welcome speech invites everyone to join in celebrating the person whose birthday it is. The welcome speech opening a specialist conference will affirm its principal purpose: the coming together of people with mutual interests to meet and share new knowledge. Or if a welcome speech is given to newcomers in a workplace, club or educational setting, its purpose is to give an introductory overview of how things work to help them feel more at ease in their new situation - to help them develop a sense of belonging.

Getting the tone right for an event

What is tone.

Tone is the combined impact of the words chosen to express something, with how they are structured and, delivered. All three elements come together to create tone * .

Get tone wrong, and your welcome speech is a disaster.

Get it right, and it's a triumph!

(Yes, that's hyperbole but I'm sure you get the idea. ☺)

How to choose the right words

The beginning of getting tone right is to think about your audience and the event itself. Your goal is to unite and bring them together in the main purpose at the core of the occasion. What type of language will do that most appropriately and easily?

To answer that question, think about the common interest everybody shares - the principal reason behind them getting together. It will help guide your language choice.

Is it a fun event like a birthday party for close friends and family? If so, then informal language is likely to be the most apt.

You might hear something along the lines of: "Well, here we all are! The big day has finally arrived. Jean-Marie is 50! Half a century! How on earth did that happen?"

If it's a remembrance service for someone who has recently died, the language you're likely to hear is more formal.

For example: "Friends, family, colleagues, thank you for joining us today to celebrate and give thanks for our dear Jean-Marie. Your presence is gratefully appreciated."

What is appropriate? What is expected? Do spend some time thinking tone through. Misunderstanding and getting it wrong can be very embarrassing for everyone. If in doubt, ask someone whose opinion you trust.

Sports day promotes healthy competition between students.

National Sports Day is also dedicated to the nation's sports heroes and champions

Sports day reduces study pressure among students.

Games are compulsory in every school as physical and mental development is essential. All students are not good at studies, but Some are good at sports. Much to the joy of each student, Sports Day is one of the significant events in the school.

Sports teach discipline, respect, friendship, leadership, resilience, teamwork and overcoming adversity. It is a crucial part of a student's growth and development. A good school aims to improve a student's physical abilities and helps them learn a sense of good sportsmanship.

The sports day celebration shows the commitment that all of us have towards sports. The testimony of this is our students, who perform with extraordinary vitality in all the given sports, whether cricket, basketball, volleyball and kabaddi, to name a few. Their performances have always been spectacular in all the zonal, state and national competitions. We teach our students the spirit of sportsmanship and never give up spirit.

A good school aims to improve a student's physical abilities and helps them learn a sense of good sportsmanship and how to compete in life in different situations.

Sports day should be celebrated in every school, and teachers should encourage students to participate in different sports activities as it will teach them various aspects of life and give them a change from their academics. Sports Day is a very inspiring and happy day that every student looks forward to. Every student can participate in different types of sporting events. I enjoy sports day and look forward to it every year. It helps me showcase my athletic abilities in front of an enthusiastic audience.

Extracurricular activities and sports teach students many essential life lessons. It teaches discipline, focus, dedication, hard work, commitment, and teamwork. And it is our responsibility as adults to value sportsmanship and award the courage of students to take action rather than focusing on winning or losing.

Health | Sports is necessary for mental health and should be considered essential for a holistic and healthy life. Students should also take care of their mental health. It plays a significant role in keeping them happy and focused. By physically playing various sports, people will realise that they can focus and concentrate better in class.

Our school celebrates Sports Day in March every year. This year, sports day was celebrated on 3rd March. The Governor of Delhi was the chief guest. The school building was white-washed and polished, and the playground was tastefully decorated. On one side, there was the pavilion. On the side, a gateway was made.

The chief guest arrived on time. The police had made strict security arrangements. The Principal, staff members and athletes received him at the gate. He was introduced to the athletes. Then he was presented with a guard of honour.

Immediately after that, the sports commenced. The sports day began with a 100-metre race. The race started with the bang of a pistol. Time was recorded with the help of a stopwatch. I missed the first position by 22 seconds. I stood second. It was a good performance. Similarly, 200-metre and 500-metre races were also held. The name of those securing first, second and third positions was announced.

The long jump and high jump competitions were fascinating. I topped the high jump performance. Many other events, such as shot-put and hammer-throw, were also held. It was fun to witness the three-legged, matki, and potato race. These events sent even the most severe spectators to laughter.

The chief guest distributed the prizes. He lauded me personally. I won two awards. The Principal thanked the Chief Guest. The National Anthem was sung, and the function came to a close. It was an eventful day in my life.

So far I am extremely proud of what my students have achieved in the field of sports and I am sure you all will agree to the fact that it helps you in staying healthy and fit.

I would like to congratulate all those students who achieved victory in the zonal competition and also those who lost, even because they showed a great perseverance on the field and gave a really tough competition to other teams. Of course, a big congratulation to all the faculty members, as without your hard work and support, nothing would have been possible and our students wouldn’t have been able to excel in their respective area of sports. I wish everyone all the very best for other future sports competitions and I sincerely hope that you continue to bring glory to our school, and we as a school, also continue to keep up with the tradition of celebrating Annual Sports Day.

Besides, I want to shift my attention to those students who do not come to the forefront and remain confined to merely studies. A humble request to all the teachers, i.e. help these students identify their hidden talent and help them in shaping their talent to the best of their capacity.

Now that our guest of honor, Mr.………, the famous swimmer is amongst us, I would like to welcome him with a huge round of applause and honor with a bouquet. You are truly an inspirational personality for all of us as at such a young age of 29, you have been able to bring silver medals to our country.

Warm Greetings of the Day Everyone! I – Sormishtha Chattopadhyay – the principal of this school feel extremely glad to have been welcoming you all to the 18 th annual sports day meet in the auditorium.

I have been the principal of this school from past 7 years and I have literally seen it progress in front of my eyes, so my happiness knows no bounds when I see our students performing well in both academics and sports. And today being the sports day, I would like to celebrate the victory of our students in the given field of sports.

In the present time, we have our students excelling in varied sports, such as cricket, football, basket ball, hockey and kabbadi. The dream which seemed so difficult yesterday is being fulfilled now and the credit of course goes to our teachers and students, who put their best foot forward during the practice sessions.

Year after year, our students are making us feel proud and this fills me with enough gusto to provide you all with the best of facilities so that you can flourish up to your maximum capacity. However, all this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our teachers and parents. Hence, I on behalf of the entire school express gratitude and a note of thank you to all the teachers and dear parents for constantly working for the betterment of their wards and inculcating in them the right values and skills.

So as you know why we all have gathered here and what is so special about today. Today being the Sports Day – I am sure one of the favorite days for all the students is what gives me an even greater pleasure to host a gathering on the Sports Day and organize some activities suited to the interest of the students as well as teachers.

Clearly, the sports day celebration shows our commitment that all of us have towards sports. The testimony of which is our students, who perform with great exuberance in all the given sports whether it’s cricket, basketball, volleyball and kabbadi, to name a few. Their performances have always been spectacular in all the zonal, state and national level competitions. All that we inculcate in our students is the spirit of sportsmanship and never give up spirit.

On this note, I would like to share with you all, a quote of Jesse Owens – the great American athlete who bagged four gold medals in the Summer Olympics of 1936 held in Berlin, Germany. He made a great statement, which says “Friendships born on the field of athletic strife are the real gold of competition. Awards become corroded, but friends gather no dust.”

This is very much understood that each one of you tries to showcase or exhibit your talent on the field, especially against your opponent from the competitor’s team. But I will still encourage you, as always, to make the most of such opportunities in order to display the best of your aesthetic talent as well as the spirit of camaraderie.

On this auspicious occasion, I would like to shower praise and congratulate the entire sports team of our school along with their trainers to have worked rigorously on the fields. The efforts of both our students and teachers are so evident and it has raised the overall standard of our performances and stamina of our students. I am sure we all will agree to the fact that sports make us healthy and strong and also teach us to embrace both victory as well as defeat gracefully. Such lessons, I sternly believe, should be continuously taught to our students as they at a later stage lead to the building blocks of achievement in life.

I, Dr. ………. – the principal, of this school welcome you all to the 16 th sports day meet in our school. It gives me immense pleasure to have seeing you all together and celebrating this yet another auspicious meet as well as the achievements of our students in various competitions.

There is a famous proverb, which says, “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.” This is indeed a very true saying as we all realize the importance of playful activities in our lives, right! Without any activity or sports, our body becomes lethargic and laid back. In fact, our body starts harboring various illnesses and start ageing fast. It therefore becomes very important to remain engaged in some sport or the other. Clearly, with the help of sports we gain both mental and physical strength. Also, our body remains healthy and fit.

This is the reason why I and my school administration lay special emphasis on sport activities and on organizing sports day every year. All our students and in fact our teaching staff look forward to such activities including hurdle race, flat race, long jump, high jump, etc. Through activities such as these we get to see the talent of our students and realize different strengths of our students as one students may be good at one particular sport, the other would be in something else, and a few would be the all-rounders.

We are proud that our school lays emphasis on the overall growth of the students – their physical as well as intellectual development. I hope we could lay a strong foundation of our students and seen them perform well in all the spheres of life. It is very important to identify the hidden talent of our students and help them in honing those skills that they naturally possess. Our school, in the past decade has achieved significantly in this regard, so much so that the name of school is widely known today and is counted amongst the best schools.

These brilliant students exhibit such qualities that will not only help them in achieving their goals, but also bring glory of success to our school academy. Today, we have gathered here not just to celebrate the achievements of our students, but also to give due regard to our values and morals which these awardees exemplify, like discipline, compassion and zeal for learning.

Awards are a way to encourage good behaviour and inculcate competitive spirit. This is the reason why our school organizes award ceremony every year to encourage its students. So we are here to give away the awards in mainly six categories, viz. academics, distinction in sports and arts, for participating in school exhibitions, debates and other social events. The awards to be distributed today are not just for recognizing those students who have performed exceptionally well in their academics, but also to honour those students who excelled in sports, performing arts and visual arts, including the ones who were proactive in various social events. The aim is to recognize that extra talent of our students other than academics and motivate them to shine in their respective fields.

Our institution has always provided its students with a healthy and fairly competitive environment to help them grow in every sphere of activity, be it academics, sports or any other extra-curricular role. The preceding year was indeed a very busy year for all of us as we had worked really hard to get through this competition. Our young athletes participated in all the four major games, namely table tennis, karate, cycling and indoor football and emerged with flying colours. You people have made us extremely proud.

Today, we are here to announce the lucky winners of the 12 main awards and also for applauding the victory of our commendable award recipients. A huge congratulations to all the finalists, you have definitely set a very admiring benchmark for other sports persons of this institution to imitate. We hope that you will continue to achieve brilliance in your respective sports career and in other spheres too.

You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club won’t be worth a dime.” Our football team has proved that a game can only be victorious when the players are well-coordinated and are imbued with a true team spirit. Due to such great efforts in league, the team has brought home second prize in the event organized in Pune at the national level and made our institution extremely proud.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of our esteemed board members, National Sports Association, city’s sports club and specially the National Olympic Council team members for making this day special for all those who have the nerve to achieve something in their lives.
