4. A Resolution from the UN

The UN has passed a resolution that gives the people of Kashmir the right to take part in a referendum that will decide whether Kashmiris want to be with Pakistan or India. But Indian governments have not carried out the referendum, and they don’t accept the decision of the UN. The killings, political instability, and damage to women and children keep worsening with time in this part of the world.

Kashmir Day Poetry, Quotes, Speech, Posters, History and Songs

Kashmir day is also known as “Kashmir Solidarity Day” in Pakistan. In 1990, the Chief Minister of Punjab Nawaz Sharif called the political and religious parties to celebrate 5th February as Solidarity Day with the Kashmiris.

So, for the first time, the Kashmir day was celebrated on 5th Feb in 1990. He appealed the people to protest against India that has occupied a big part of Kashmir and does not let the Kashmiris live in the peaceful state.

So, the appeal was followed by the Pakistanis, and there were rallies, protest processions, speeches and prayers for the Kashmiri freedom movement across the land. The ruling party declared the day as a “Public Holiday” at that time.

The day is recognized on the international level. Now, every year on 5th Feb, Pakistanis celebrates Kashmir Day to support their Kashmiri Brethren in their struggle against the atrocities of Indian.

The people living in occupied Kashmir have been making efforts to breathe in the free air for the last seven decades. The Indian armed forces interrupt their freedom and have occupied their lands forcefully. They are struggling to set their country free and to live with freedom from India. Pakistanis support their aim, and they stand united with the Kashmiri people against India.

It is equally important for political parties and religious parties in Pakistan and Azad Jammu Kashmir. The political and religious parties in both the lands organize rallies, processions, conferences, and seminars to show their devotion towards their Kashmiri Brethren.

Kashmir Day Poetry

The leaders and spokespersons of the parties make speeches to show their unity and devotion towards Kashmir and Kashmiri people. The people of Pakistan make the freedom movement of Kashmiris strengthened against Indian occupation. Kashmiris hate Indian occupation on their lands, and they are making struggle and sacrificing their lives to set their country free out of the foreign occupation. The Kashmiris want to live a free life and India wants to keep Kashmir as an Indian territory forcibly. However, Pakistan supports Kashmiri people and their freedom to live as an independent state.

Initially, the Kashmir Solidarity day was observed in Pakistan. Now it has been observed on international levels. Pakistanis wherever they are, celebrate this day to show solidarity and devotion towards Kashmiris. For this purpose, the poets from various parts of the world write heart touching poems. The poems also show how much passionate love they are bearing in their hearts for Kashmir. Here, I am going to give a few examples of the poetry on Kashmir day. people of Kashmir are peace less, restless,

Kashmiri’s are forced to keep roaring,

when will this blood shedding come to an end, o! world?

when will we live fearless, and bold?

Koi awaz ab uthaye ki kashmir jal raha hai

Har fard hai pareshan, bechain o dil shikasta

Zalim hai sena tane, mazloom hai besahara

No one knows her here by her name,

the one who is sitting mum

The night they fled,

leaving behind their village, home, hearth

and half-cooked bread on the stove,

who had come to see them

a night before that night?

And why didn’t they open their windows

and door, for anyone after that?

Even before they could tell us,

why they had not been able to look

into the eyes of their daughters

ever since then…

making a creaking sound,

they could never tell us all,

what they really wanted to…!

Poem: Kashmir

They have in their memories

their home, and the only flower

blooming in their backyard,

and a cot left outside,

soaking in the pouring rain,

the night they fled.

They have in their memories,

their dialogues, laughter,

and sweet sun,

and everything else,

they could not bring along,

with themselves,

and their little ones,

who did not return home,

after they went to play,

soon after the day,

when snow in the valley

had melted away!

Poem: Kashmiri Hates India

They set off explosives in their roots,

and separated them from their lands,

I wonder, what did they whisper in their ears,

and separated them from their lands?

The snow storms hit the valley, striking Chinars,

where would the fallen Chinars go now?

They will dry up, and set ablaze,

we all know that,

we all know, that their ashes

would still like to return

but to their valleys only.

Kashmir Day Quotes

Kashmir Day is not a day when people get a public holiday in Pakistan. It has become a very important day for Pakistanis. On this day, they stand united to show their devotions for Kashmir and Kashmiri people. They send different SMS and quotes to their friends and relatives to show solidarity with Kashmiri brethren.

They are fighting a continuous war to get freedom from the Indian occupation. Indian armed forces are trying to press their voices for freedom by slaughtering the Kashmiris. But they cannot make their voices silent as Pakistanis are standing with them united. The 5th Feb is a symbol of Kashmiris’ voice on the international forum so that they could get their rights and live a free life.

Pakistan is always with them in every difficult time so that they could not be suppressed by the Indian forces. They make a big nation, and they need to decide their fate by a freedom referendum. Pakistan supports their rights as they are also human beings beyond their religion. Indian does not want to let the occupied land go. That’s why it is violating human rights and wants then Kashmiris to be Indian slaves forever. However, Pakistan supports the Kashmir resolution and their freedom movement wholeheartedly. On the issue of Kashmir, all ruling and opposition parties, religious parties and even the people from every walk of life are united.

On 5th Feb, there are different seminars and rallies in all over Pakistan to pay tribute to Kashmiris for sacrificing their lives for the freedom movement. In Pakistan, 5th Feb is observed as a public holiday that was first observed in 1990 in Pakistan.

It was not only in 1990, but in 1975, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the then president of Pakistan announced a nationwide strike on 5th February. It was announced to support Kashmiris in their freedom movement and to ensure Pakistani support for them in every crucial moment.

Kashmiris are sacrificing their lives for the security of their lands, and till now, Indian armed forces are helpless before Kashmiri people. The Kashmiri people hate India and Indian forces. They do not want them to interrupt their freedom. They want to get their country back from foreign occupation and want to live a free life.

Pakistan supports the rights of Kashmiri people and wants India to set the land free and let the Kashmiri people live a peaceful life. But India has occupied Kashmir due to its geographical importance. Kashmiris are entirely resolute to make their land free of foreign occupation.

They want to aware the rest of the world about the atrocities of the Indian armed forces on Kashmiris. So, in the entire world, 5th Feb is observed as a day when Kashmiri people and even Pakistan can represent the rights of Kashmiris. It is on 5th Feb that different parties, religious leaders and organizations hold seminars to let the world know what is going on in Kashmir. They make the people aware of the cruelties of India over the Kashmiris.

Now, some straightforward people in Indian media also support fairly to Kashmiri people’s rights. They also want the Kashmiris to decide their own fate. So, due to the media, there is great awareness to the people of the world regarding what is going on in Kashmir and what should be the solution.

In various parts of the country, the people make a human-made chain of hands to show the unity with the Kashmiris in their difficult times.

Kashmir Day History

Kashmir Solidarity Day is observed officially in Pakistan on 5th Feb every year. The first time, it was observed in 1975 when the President of Pakistan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto declared that there would be a nationwide strike on 5th Feb to show devotion for Kashmir resolution. Later, In 1990, Qazi Hussain Ahmad suggested the ruling party of Pakistan to announce 5th Feb as a Solidarity Day to Kashmiri people. The then Chief Minister of Punjab, Nawaz Sharif declared 5th Feb as a public holiday to show the solidarity towards Kashmiri people. The question arises that what happened at that time that the CM Punjab announced this day as a solidarity day? Let me explain. In 1990, the Indian Government appointed a new governor of Occupied Kashmir to Gug Mohan. Kashmiris protested against this decision, and they boycotted the new governor to show the world the true face of India. It was a historic protest when the Indian forces brutally martyred a large number of Kashmiri people. The aroma of their blood was prevailing in the entire Kashmir valley. They were tortured by the Indian forces brutally for protesting against the Indian government. However, no cruelty could make them retreated from their resolution. So, 5th Feb was declared a solidarity day in Pakistan by the then CM Punjab.

So, It has been a part of Pakistan public holidays since 1990. It is not observed as a public holiday, however. The people belonging to different walks of life organize various speech and post competitions to show the world how Kashmiris are struggling against the foreign occupation. The people in Pakistan show their support to Kashmiris in their struggle against Indian armed forces.

Kashmir Day is celebrated as a solidarity day in Pakistan. On this occasion, Pakistani people pay tribute to Kashmiris and stand united with them in their difficult times. Pakistani singers do not forget them and compose different songs to make the Kashmiris well aware of the support of Pakistani people with them. It is celebrated officially as a solidarity day for Kashmiri brethren. Even the official media channel of Pakistani armed forces releases the songs on this memorable day to commemorate the memories of martyred Kashmiris.

It was fixed before the Partition that, all the Muslim-majority areas will be given to Pakistan and similarly, the remaining Hindu-majority areas will be given to India. But India doesn’t want to give a beautiful area of Kashmir to Pakistan. So, they sent their forces to Kashmir and occupied this Muslim majority Area. The whole world was seeing what was going on here. But the whole world steals their eyes from this issue then and now they regret it. Urdu was introduced in the erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir as an official language in 1889 replacing many centuries of Persian in official patronage. The language grew steadily in use with the general populace of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. With distinct political regions in the state, where people speak different mother tongues, Urdu began to act as a cohesive and assimilating language that helped in merging the three regions of Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir together. Urdu was introduced in schools and colleges even before the regional languages of Kashmiri and Dogri. Early poets and literary figures of Kashmir enthusiastically took up Urdu to compete with their peers and icons outside Kashmir, but most of them could not register success in these efforts. Many poets had to resort to their mother tongues, like Kashmiri and Dogri, to be recognized and adored by masses. Prose writings continued in Urdu as it was recognized mostly in the literary and academic circles. In Kashmir, there is a growing crisis of identity in the masses to either identify with Kashmiri or with Urdu as their language of preference in their day to day activities. My contention in this paper is that those who took up education early in Kashmir, like in the city of Srinagar, find it very easy to accept Urdu as their chosen language of preference –both inside and outside the realm of their private spheres. Those from the rural areas unequivocally consider Kashmiri as their primary language. But there are many between the two exclusively urban and ruler groups in Kashmir who remain torn in their devotion to either their primarily local language or the official one that is Urdu. The government efforts to promote regional languages –especially Dogri and Kashmiri- in the last two decades has only deepened the sense of regionalism and identity crisis among the people, with Urdu facing backlash many a time in Jammu and Ladakh provinces.

Language plays significant role in shaping individual identities and in distinguishing how one group is different from another group. Although a group may distinguish itself by its racial features, the type of dress its members wear, the food they eat, the houses they build or the group's totem, insignia, tattoos and specific practices, it is the language that distinguishes groups of people most precisely. This paper examines role of language in constructing individual identities in Pakistani context with a focus on how people leave their indigenous languages and choose any other powerful language to construct their identity. Main areas of this study are how language and different factors (historical, social, global, political etc) are responsible for making individual identities. Uniqueness of this paper lies in its investigation in this field and overview of different literary concepts on the topic. Due to nature of the research in the field, data was collected through questionnaires and interviews from the people belonging to different parts of Sindh. The results found that the way people speak multi languages in different contexts reflect their individual identity. Thus, this research may provide foundation for understanding the roles of language in constructing identities.

Arabic a language of the Semitic family of languages, Persian a member of the Indo-Iranian group of languages; and Kashmiri and Urdu, members of the Indo-Aryan family of languages are the most significant contact languages in the linguistically heterogeneous setting of the Kashmiri speech community. Existing side-by-side, these languages serve different sociolinguistic purposes and are assigned different roles. The linguistic amalgamation of these languages has resulted in the development of a considerable amount of lexicon common to all of them in general, but Kashmiri and Urdu in particular. The present paper explores the range of the Kashmiri-Urdu common lexicon. It also examines the extent to which Arabic and Persian have contributed to this shared lexical treasure.Finally,an exhaustive list of Kashmiri-Urdu lexical items used in various social domains of Kashmiri speakers (religion, administration,medicine,education,language and literature, law, and every day conversation) is presented and analyzed.

I presented this paper in the "Pakistan Mother Languages Literature Festival' held on February 20-21, 2016 at Lok Virsa, Islamabad. Primarily I represented "Wakhi Language of Wakhan Corridor, also spoken in Upper Hunza (Gojal), Upper Ishkoman Valley; Burughil valley of district Chitral; (Pakistan); Toshqughan Tajik Autonomous Area and Tajik Milizeh of Zinjiang Province of China. This is one several endangered languages spoken in and around PAMIRs as a result of growing external communication networks, electronic media, ever increasing tourists and increasing number of youth from these areas to other parts of the globe.

—This paper is restricted to the investigation of linguistic variation among the Kashmiri speakers at the level of phonology and lexicon of their language in accordance with certain social variables, viz-a-viz. religion, education, region / socioeconomic status, age and occupation. In the present paper, an effort has been devoted to examine as to how the structure of the Kashmiri language varies at the level of phonology and lexicon, in accordance with above mentioned social variables. It also takes into account the possible reasons behind this variation. The present paper explores as to how the social heterogeneity of the Kashmiri speech community is reflected in the linguistic behavior of its speakers, and gives rise to variations in the use of their language at the level of phonology and lexicon. The paper begins with giving a brief introduction about language variation, social variables, and linguistic variables. It also discusses the historical perspective of language variation, and throws light on the related literature by discussing some important studies of variation carried out by different scholars of linguistics from time to time. In this study an attempt has been made to picturize the social structure of the Kashmiri speech community in terms of its social stratification/ and social heterogeneity. The paper also discusses the research methodology adopted in carrying out this study.

The rich and fascinating culture of Kashmir is famous throughout the globe. The people, arts, crafts, theatre, literature, dances, music and so much more greatly contribute to the height of the Kashmiri Culture. Furthermore, known for its diversity due to the blend of various cultures and religions there. Its rich history is the cherry on top that only adds to the aura of the place.

The inhabitants of Kashmir are commonly referred to as Kashmiris who are ethnically linguistic faction. The indigenous populace of Kashmir usually lives in crowds in the areas of Pakistan, Northern Punjab, and Potohar. The influences of the Sanskrit dialect can be noticed in their local speech as you travel to different parts of Kashmir. The culture also seems to be heavily impacted by Central Asian and Persian beliefs. The various aspects of the culture of Kashmir as discussed below form an important part of the Kashmiri ethos. Kashmiri culture is predominantly practiced by the populace who live in the Kashmir and Dodab valleys. Furthermore, the valley is renowned for its fine arts, consisting of customarily indigenous boats/houseboats, handicrafts, and literature.

A specialty of Kashmir has to be the vibrant costumes of the region. The women of Kashmir look gorgeous dressed in traditional clothing paired off with exquisite jewelry such as necklaces, armlets, earrings as well as nose rings. Furthermore, they also wear loose salwar kameez to escape the summer heat. On the other hand, men wear kurta pajamas, shalwars, and skullcaps. During the winter, the people look elegant in Pheran which is a long overcoat that is beautifully ornamented with patches and embroidery work. The fabric they wear largely depends on the weather and they ordinarily wear loose gowns. Additionally, men and women also wear skullcaps and headgear respectively. Women generally cover both their shoulders and head out of respect for elders. These traditional dresses of Kashmir truly represent the breathtaking culture of the region.

When talking about the dance and harmonies of Kashmir , the words that come to mind are elegant and magnificent. The joyous festivals there are marked by, of course, music and dance which even attracts the tourists to join in on the excitement. Throughout the region of Kashmir, a wide range of dance forms can be witnessed that are executed based upon the occasion that they mark, for instance, a prominent dance form here is the infamous Mask dance that is executed on the occasion of the Hemis Festival , a popular festival of Kashmir. Another allure of these dances is the bright and vibrant attire paired off with truly exquisite jewelry. Some other prominent dances of the place are Chakri, Rouf, Bhand Pather, Hafiza, Kud, and Bacha Nagma. The folk music of Kashmir will force anyone to start tapping their feet, especially to the lively Rabab Music. Apart from that, instrumental music is quite prevalent in Kashmir and therefore common melodies that can be heard are the Sitar, Dumru, and Nagara. Apart from that, the music that accompanies festive occasions such as celebrations, parties, and weddings is mainly Wanwun, Ghazals, Choral as well as Sufi.

Kashmir offers truly delicious cuisine that includes both vegetarian and non-vegetarian delicacies for this is a place that caters to all and these delicious dishes will leave you wanting more. Some infamous non-vegetarian dishes are the Kashmiri Kebab, Pasanda, Syun Alu, Yakhni, and Methi Keema and therefore it’s every meat-lover’s delight. But vegetarians need not worry because there are myriad dishes available for them, such as Rajmah, Shree Pulao, Ladyar Tsaman, and Nadir Yakhaen. These flavorful dishes are prepared by utilizing fresh vegetables and paneer, to make it all the more delicious. Kashmir is an amazing destination for anyone like me who loves desserts. You absolutely must try out delicacies such as sevaiyaan, phirni, barfi, Kashmiri Aloo Dum and many more that will truly make your day. Kashmiris are known for their hospitality and they greet their guests with some refreshing hot tea and Kahwa. Another dish that is a staple to the household of Kashmir is its very own pulao. Additionally, Hak or Karam is a dish that is a favorite in the region and is specially prepared during cold winter evenings to provide warmth.

The culturally rich Kashmir is a land of festivals where everyone comes together and celebrates with zeal and enthusiasm. It’s well-known that Jammu and Kashmir possess an exemplary heritage and culture which is beautifully brought out by the festivals of the region. Eid-ul-Fitr, Lohri, Tulip Festival, Holi, Shikara Festival, Hemis festival, Gurez Festival, and Sindu Darshan are few festivals here that are celebrated with the utmost fervor. These festivals customarily mark an auspicious occasion and have their origins in mythology. These festivals are a must to attend because of their joyous nature, everywhere around you, you can observe the native inhabitants dancing, singing, eating delicious cuisine with their family dressed in traditional clothing, and tourists shopping for handicrafts. Furthermore, Bahu Mela, Jhiri Mela, and Craft, and many more are great to encompass the beauty of the local culture.

Kashmir is a prominent center for mesmerizing arts and crafts with its handicrafts industry particularly blossoming. Kashmir is practically synonymous with pashmina shawls that are well-known for their texture and amazing quality. They are particularly renowned for their softness and the warmth they provide. These shawls are furthermore a symbol of royalty. Another prominent craft of Kashmir is the hand-knotted rugs as well as wool rugs that possess floral patterns. Additionally, some lovely handicrafts of Kashmir include paper mache, wicker, carved walnut furniture, and silverware. The government of Kashmir has also invested in the arts and crafts of the place for they serve as a major tourist attraction. If one ever visits Kashmir, one simply must buy the intricate handicrafts as a souvenir.

The Jhelum River was the only means of transport initially which resulted in the creation of ghats as a transport landing point and a range of residences with wooden balconies and complex gridwork evolved along the canals and riverfronts.

Because the economy of Kashmir is largely dependent on agriculture and the combined activities, the cities, especially Srinagar, never had the wealth to undertake a significant urban reconstruction. Therefore, the image of the towns of Kashmir remains the same as they were 300 years ago, and the wood constructions with roofing are reminiscent of the medieval European towns that live in culture and customs while maintaining the essence of ancient Kashmir for generations.

The traditional buildings are of two sorts, based on the plan- square plan and linear plan with windows on both sides, as the symmetry is the main principle for earthquake-resistance structures and the arrangement of the function within. Each residence has a Zoon Dub or a roof-top balcony to view the moon (zoon). The balconies and wing panels are designed like jhumkas and have magnificent Pinjera Kari works. The roofs of interiors have khatamband woodwork, faux ceilings with intertwined geometric shapes of Persian arts and consist of walnuts or deodars with apparent carpentry.

Traditional dwellings in Kashmir are separated into two categories: Taq building and Dhajji Dewari. Dhajji Dewari is made of wooden frames and trusses filled with flat stones and bricks and is carefully packed into gaps of mud or lime mortar with stone flowers in the remaining gaps. Taq is another method of building which in Srinagar is widespread. A Taq building can stand an earthquake and is high on numerous floors. The walls consist of a combination of scrap metal and brick or sun-dried bricks placed in thick mud mortars at regular intervals with load-bearing piers.

As technology has progressed, Kashmir’s lifestyle has also evolved, architecture has also changed. Their dwellings are currently created using advanced technology and cement substitutes for mud and iron for wood. The traditional construction skills are decreasing and non-indigenous cement constructions are being replaced. The traditional shrines, such as the Naqschband Saheb, Dastgir Sahib, etc., are unique examples of vernacular architecture in Kashmir. Most heritage buildings were turned into government offices and other structures were demolished totally, such as the 150 years old Maharaj Gunj dispensary which was classified as a heritage building by the Department of Archives, Archeology and Museum.

In Jammu and Kashmir, one can never run out of locations to explore. The region is full of scenic views, wonderful flora, magnificent architecture. There are picturesque homestays and eco-friendly resorts to select from. Those with a thrilling mind will find a multiplicity of activities that await them. Finally, the countless religious sanctuaries show tourists the road to calm and tranquillity, if they are spiritually inclined.

The Himalayas are famous for their natural beauty and their gentleness, with their Pir Panjal and Karakoram mountains. The most stunning mountain peaks, glaciers, wonderful monasteries, blue lakes, rivers, woods, green wilderness, and high pine trees are all around Jammu and Kashmir. Amarnath and Vaishno Devi draw a significant number of pilgrims each year since sports like skiing, golfing, trekking, river rafting, paragliding and camping are all about the journey to Jammu and Kashmir. Some of the state’s notable attractions are Dal Lake, Kashmir Valley, Khardung La Pass, Gulmarg, Shalimar Bagh. Kashmiri, Dogri, Hindi, English, and Urdu are the official languages of Jammu and Kashmir.

Kashmiri, with about 9 million speakers is the most widely spoken language in all of J&K. The Dardic language is also one of 22 scheduled languages according to the Indian Constitution and is the only Dardic language that has the status of an official language. In the valley of Chenab, it is the most common language. Kashmiri also has a major influence of Persian especially in vocabulary while being among the most conservative Indo-Aryan languages.

Gilgiti, Kohistani Shina, Guresi, Drassi and Broksat belong to the dialects of Shina. In much of Gilgit-Baltistan Khowar is spoken.

The most diverse groups of languages are the Pahari languages spoken throughout the entire J&K region. Pahari is a collective name given by outsiders because speakers of these languages are generally located in largely hilly parts of the country. These languages are locally known by a variety of dialects. Bhaderwahi, Padri, Ponchi, Mirpuri, Parmi or Pahari (Karnah) are several different Pahari languages.

Tibetan languages are languages that belong to the Sino-Tibetan family. J&K speaks many Tibetan languages and falls within the Balti-Ladakhi category or the ancient western Tibetan. Ladakhi or Bhoti or Bodhi, Balti, Purgi and Zangskari are among these.

Dogri has about three million speakers. It is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in the plains of Jammu or in Duggerdesh, in the J&K region. Jammu city has a Dogra majority, the second biggest city in the whole of J&K. Unfortunately, the language has declined considerably despite its official position.

Two languages of the Iranian language family, Pashto and Wakhi (Gilgit-Baltistan), are spoken in J&K.

In scattered areas, Gojri is spoken across J&K. It’s mainly spoken by Bakerwals and Gujjar. Many Gujjars, however, do not all speak Gojri as local languages but identify and embrace the Gojri culture.

The Kashmir valley and Pakistan governed Kashmir speak and understand Urdu. Urdu was acknowledged in 1889 as J&K’s state and official language. For around three centuries, before Urdu, Persian was Kashmir’s official language. The land, revenue, courts and even FIRs in Urdu are recorded on all official records in Kashmir.

Most of the Jammu and Kashmir people are mostly occupied by agriculture. Jammu and Kashmir also are the country’s largest fruit producers, because its soil is highly fertile and compatible with fruit growing, such as apples, apricots, cherries and nuts, almonds and walnuts. The Kashmir valley is the sole saffron-producing location in the country. Most farmers participate both in sericulture and in supplementary revenues. Many people participate in the tourism sector since there are a lot of stunning tourist locations.

In various sections of Jammu and Kashmir, three main faiths are visibly prevalent. Islam obviously dominates the Kashmir Valley in terms of the entire population and thus the valley is full of Muslim inhabitants. Besides that, Hinduism and Buddhism also form major parts of Kashmir’s religions. Buddhist adherents live in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh district.

Alarming surge in unwarranted claims by indian leaders over azad kashmir: fo.

The Foreign Office (FO) on Friday said that there had been an “alarming surge in provocative statements from Indian leaders asserting unwarranted claims over Azad Jammu and Kashmir”, adding that Pakistan rejected such claims.

The remarks by the FO spokesperson did not mention any specific statement by an Indian leader.

However, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that the “people of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir will demand to be with India” due to the development taking place in the neighbouring country, according to NDTV .

Earlier this month, India’s foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar stated that India “would never accept that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is not part of India”, The Economic Times reported.

The development also comes after Iran and Pakistan, in a joint statement, highlighted the need to resolve the long-standing issue through “dialogue and peaceful means based on the will of the people of that region and in accordance with international law”. In response, India said it had taken up the matter with Iranian authorities, according to The Print .

It should be mentioned that India is currently in the process of conducting a mammoth election , in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is widely expected to win a third term.

Addressing a weekly press briefing in Islamabad today, FO spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said, “We are witnessing an alarming surge in provocative statements from Indian leaders asserting unwarranted claims on AJK. Pakistan rejects these claims.

“Fuelled by hyper-nationalism, this inflammatory rhetoric poses a grave threat to regional peace and susceptibility,” she added, urging “Indian politicians to cease their reckless practice of dragging Pakistan into India’s populist public discourse for electoral motives”.

“Historical and legal facts as well as ground realities refute India’s baseless claims over AJK. Despite India’s rhetoric and assertions, Jammu and Kashmir remains an internationally recognised disputed territory,” the spokesperson asserted.

Zahra noted that the UN Security Council resolutions on the region “clearly outline that the final status of Jammu and Kashmir shall be determined by the will of the people through a free and impartial plebiscite under the UN auspices”.

“India would be wise to help implement these resolutions instead of harbouring delusions of grandeur,” the FO spokesperson stressed.

‘Engaged’ with US on energy requirements

The FO spokesperson also said that Pakistan was engaged with the United States regarding its energy requirements.

When asked about the Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline project and the US’ concerns about it.

Zahra said the project was discussed during Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s official visit to Pakistan, highlighting that the country had significant energy needs and was exploring options for its import.

The spokesperson added that Pakistan had noted the statements from US authorities about Pakistan-Iran trade and was engaged with the US and discussed all aspects of the country’s energy needs.

When asked about the FO’s response to US threats of imposing sanctions, Zahra said, “First of all, I should underline that Pakistan does not believe in zero-sum relationships. Expansion of our relations with one country should not be considered as coming at the expense of our relationship with another.

“Pakistan is confident that its relationship with its friends and partners, including the United States, are robust enough to move forward on their own merit, and notwithstanding any other relationships that Pakistan has with other countries in our national interest.”

The spokesperson highlighted that Pakistan and the US had a “robust dialogue and several channels of communication”.

Zahra said Pakistan would continue to “engage with them and explain the importance that Pakistan accords to its relations with its neighbours and the need for this cooperation to have the Pakistan-Iran border, as a border of peace, security and prosperity”.

Gaza mass graves ‘shock human conscience’

On the ongoing Israeli onslaught in Gaza, which has killed more than 34,300 Palestinians and brought them to the brink of famine , Zahra said Pakistan “vehemently condemns Israel’s barbarianism and its war crimes against the people of Gaza”.

The spokesperson said the discovery of mass graves at two major hospitals in Gaza has “shocked the human conscience”.

“Pakistan joins the call by the United Nations for a clear, transparent and credible investigation of mass graves and the massacre of men, women and children by the Israeli occupation forces,” she added.

The spokesperson stressed the “urgency of an unconditional ceasefire to protect civilians from further carnage” as well as an independent and impartial investigation to “ascertain the facts, fix responsibility and punish the perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza”.

“We urge the international community, especially the backers of Israel, to take urgent measures to bring an end to the war on the people of Gaza, to lift the siege, to protect civilians, facilitate humanitarian assistance and to hold to account the perpetrators of the Gaza genocide,” Zahra said.

PM, FM Dar to attend WEF

Separately, PM Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) Special Meeting on Global Collaboration, Growth and Energy in Riyadh from April 28-29, the FO spokesperson said.

Zahra said that the premier and the foreign minister had received invitations from Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman and WEF Founder and Chief Executive Professor Klaus Schwab.

“High-level participation in the forum will afford an important opportunity to present Pakistan’s priorities, specifically in global health architecture, inclusive growth, revitalising regional collaboration and the need for striking a balance between promoting growth and energy consumption,” she emphasised.

The spokesperson highlighted that PM Shehbaz and FM Dar would also hold bilateral meetings with world leaders, heads of international bodies and other leading personalities on the margins of the event.

Recalling Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s three-day official visit to Pakistan earlier this week, Zahra highlighted that it was the first visit by an Iranian leader in seven years.

Reiterating the steps for economic and regional cooperation agreed upon by Iran and Pakistan, she said that the leaders of the two countries “highlighted the need for dialogue and peaceful means to resolve the Kashmir dispute in accordance with international law and the will of the people”.

Further, the prime minister would also participate in the 15th Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit being held in Banjul, Gambia on May 4-5 May.

Zahra highlighted that the summit was being convened at a “critical time for the Muslim ummah as the war on the people of Gaza continues unabated”.

She added that the summit would be an important occasion for the OIC leaders to deliberate upon the “deteriorating situation in Gaza and project a strong, collective and unified stance on the Palestinian question”.

According to the spokesperson, at the summit, PM Shehbaz would speak about Pakistan’s “grave concern on the genocide in Gaza and the right to self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir” as well as rising Islamophobia and terrorism, among other global issues.

The prime minister would also hold bilateral meetings with leaders of the Islamic world on the sidelines of the OIC summit.

Meanwhile, FM Dar would attend the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) meeting on May 2-3 and meet his counterparts from other member countries on the CFM’s sidelines.

World News in Brief: Support for Haiti mission, challenge of ‘commodity dependence’, Iran's 'strict' hijab law

Following the installation of a transitional council in Haiti, seven countries officially notified the UN Secretary-General on Friday of their intention to contribute personnel to the Security Council-backed support mission for the crisis-wracked Caribbean nation. 

Kenya has offered to lead the multinational mission that aims to provide much needed back up to the national police in a bid to regain control of the streets from gang rule, which has plunged the country into chaos in recent months. 

Kenya was joined by the Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Benin, Chad and Jamaica in pledging support. The UN Spokesperson’s Office said “other countries have expressed interest, including publicly, but have not notified the Secretary-General yet.” 

Currently, $18 million has been deposited in the support mission’s Trust Fund, provided by Canada ($8.7 million), France ($3.2 million) and the United States ($6 million). 

Meanwhile, armed violence continues across the country, with Port-au-Prince and the Ouest department the worst hit. 

The situation also remains volatile at the national port, said UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric. 

“The Varreux fuel terminal is now closed after several attacks by gangs. However, on a more positive note, our humanitarian colleagues tell us that in the past three weeks, more than 100 humanitarian containers were retrieved at the Caribbean Port Service.” 

Meanwhile, the humanitarian response continues, and the World Food Programme ( WFP ) has provided daily food assistance to displaced people in Port-au-Prince, and in other departments.  

UN health agency WHO and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have set up mobile clinics at displacement sites to provide medical consultations. Migration agency IOM is also providing basic medical and psychosocial services to people displaced. 

General Assembly President raises alert over ‘commodity dependence’ 

The President of the General Assembly on Friday called for Member States and stakeholders to address commodity dependence in countries and its effect on the global economy during an informal dialogue on the issue. 

According to Dennis Francis, commodity dependence is “a scenario where 60 per cent or more of a country's export revenue depends on basic goods”, disproportionately affecting mainly developing countries. 

While commodity markets are important to the global economy, excessive commodity dependence leaves countries and their citizens vulnerable to economic instability, he said.  

Mr. Francis called for the issue to be addressed urgently amid ongoing global discussions over debt sustainability and reform of the international financial architecture. 

“I believe that breaking free from commodity dependence, while challenging, is achievable,” Mr. Francis said.  

Dependent nations 

Based on UN trade and development body UNCTAD ’s State of Commodity Dependence report, 85 per cent of the world’s least-developed countries are commodity dependent along with many landlocked developing nations and small island developing States, leaving their economies “ vulnerable and highly susceptible to external shocks ”. 

The Assembly President said the two-decade long increase in countries impacted should “ sound the alarm bell ” for Member States as addressing the issue is necessary for achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals .

Iran police enforces ‘strict’ hijab rules, OHCHR says

Police in Iran are enforcing a violent crackdown against women and girls under the country’s hijab laws, resulting in the arrest and harassment of girls between ages 15 and 17, said Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for the UN human rights office, OHCHR , on Friday. 

The Tehran head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on 21 April a new body that would allow them to enforce existing mandatory hijab laws; members of the IRGC are reportedly allowed to implement these laws “in a more serious manner” when in public.

OHCHR is concerned about the Supporting the Family by Promoting the Culture of Chastity and Hijab draft bill, which, in its earlier form, states that violators of the mandated dress code could face flogging, fines or up to 10 years in prison.

Mr. Laurence reiterated that corporal punishment is arbitrary under international law.

As the draft bill is nearing final approval by the Guardian Council, OHCHR is calling for its shelving.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, is calling on the Iranian government to remove “all forms of gender-based discrimination and violence, including through the revision and the repeal of harmful laws, policies and practices, in line with international human rights norms and standards”.
