  • The US and the UK continue to dominate the list of the world’s best medical schools.
  • The top five are Harvard, Oxford, Stanford, Cambridge and Johns Hopkins universities.
  • Meanwhile, the World Health Organization warns of a shortfall of 18 million healthcare workers by 2030 if action isn’t taken.

The latest rankings of the world’s top medical schools are again dominated by the United States and the UK, with Harvard listed number one for the sixth successive year.

Oxford, Stanford, Cambridge and Johns Hopkins universities complete the top five in the QS World University Rankings , followed by Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet, the University of California, Los Angeles, Yale, University College London and, at number 10, Imperial College London.

These are the world's top medical schools

Harvard owes its top spot to perfect academic and employer reputation scores, with an overall total of 98.9%.

The listings include 650 of the world’s top medical schools, with 50 institutions joining for the first time this year. The biggest single group are the 233 med schools to be found in Europe, including 44 from the UK, 32 from Germany, 29 from Italy, and 17 each from France and Spain.

The table also lists 121 US medical schools, 134 from Asia, 46 from Latin America, 27 from the Middle East and 23 from Africa. Australia contributes 26 to the list, New Zealand has three with Auckland University of Technology entering for the first time.

In Asia, Japan has 34 med schools in the rankings, China 28 and South Korea 23. Nine of India’s top medical schools are included this year and Malaysia contributes eight.

The QS rankings highlight the performance of Africa in training doctors. They show Egypt is now home to nine of the world’s best medical schools, including three new entries, and the University of Cape Town’s medical school is ranked 87th in the world.

Iran increased its presence in the table, adding two institutions – Mashhad University of Medical Science and Shahid Beheshti University Tehran – to the world rankings. Saudi Arabia’s King AbdulAziz University is ranked the best medical school in the Middle East (joint 142nd).

The QS World University Rankings are based on four criteria : academic reputation; the institution’s reputation with employers; research citations; and what is known as the H-index. Scores for the first category are derived from QS’s survey of over 100,000 academics worldwide.

More than 50,000 global employers were asked to list 10 domestic and 30 international institutions they consider an excellent source of graduates. By identifying which disciplines they recruit, it is possible to give a rating for each university department.

Research reputation is derived from the number of times an institution’s work is cited in academic papers. The H-index counts the number of peer-reviewed articles a university’s academics have produced and how they have been applied in their field of study.

More doctors please

Doctors have borne the brunt of COVID-19 and its effects on health spending. In India, over 80% of newly qualified doctors in Kerala quit last September in protest after their pay was reduced.

Countries like the UK, which have relied heavily on overseas-qualified doctors, have also been hit by staff shortages caused by COVID-19 travel restrictions . A report last year found that over a third of UK doctors (37%) had qualified in another country .

The World Health Organization (WHO) says there will be a shortfall of 18 million healthcare workers by 2030. WHO’s global medical workforce strategy for 2030 says the world will need almost 2.6 million more doctors and over nine million more qualified nurses and midwives .

WHO has designated 2021 the International Year of Health and Care Workers to highlight the issue and give public recognition to the role played by medical professionals in fighting the pandemic.

It says the impact of continuing shortages of healthcare workers will be greatest in middle- and low-income countries which are already the most affected by the migration of qualified medical professionals to richer nations.

The solution is not just to improve recruitment of training of medical staff but also to ensure they have decent pay and working conditions, WHO adds. Globally, between 20-40% of all health spending is wasted due to inefficiency and poor governance, according to WHO figures.

The World Economic Forum’s Platform for Shaping the Future of Health and Healthcare is supporting efforts to transform healthcare by moving away from the current capital intensive hospital-based system to improve disease prevention and deliver personalized care to patients.

One year on: we look back at how the Forum’s networks have navigated the global response to COVID-19.

Using a multistakeholder approach, the Forum and its partners through its COVID Action Platform have provided countless solutions to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, protecting lives and livelihoods.

Throughout 2020, along with launching its COVID Action Platform , the Forum and its Partners launched more than 40 initiatives in response to the pandemic.

The work continues. As one example, the COVID Response Alliance for Social Entrepreneurs is supporting 90,000 social entrepreneurs, with an impact on 1.4 billion people, working to serve the needs of excluded, marginalized and vulnerable groups in more than 190 countries.

Keck School climbs in U.S. News ranking of best medical schools for research

The Keck School of Medicine of USC rose in U.S. News and World Report’s 2022 edition of Best Medical Schools: Research, moving to 29 th  from 31 st  a year ago.

“I am very pleased that the Keck School of Medicine of USC has risen in the Best Medical Schools: Research ranking,” said Interim Dean Narsing A. Rao, MD. “This honor recognizes our strength in research, education and clinical care. My thanks to chairs, institute directors, faculty, staff and students at the Keck School who have worked hard over this past year to maintain our high standards and reputation for excellence.”

“These rankings for the Keck School of Medicine show that we’re gaining momentum as one of the top research medical schools,” said Peggy Farnham, PhD, Chair and Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Medicine, the W.M. Keck Chair in Biochemistry and the Vice Dean for Health and Biomedical Science Education at KSOM.

“Much of this momentum can be attributed to the efforts of our graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, who are dedicated, knowledgeable, and full of curiosity and great ideas,” Farnham added. “The U.S. News and World Report rankings are further evidence that The Keck School is a terrific training environment for our students and postdocs.”

The rankings, released Tuesday, continue a surge for the Keck School’s research operations: In February six KSOM departments ranked among the top 10 nationally in National Institutes of Health grant funding. Since federal fiscal year 2015, KSOM’s NIH funding has increased 80%.

“The continued excellence of our research programs has contributed in a major way to this improvement in our U.S. News and World Report ranking,” said Tom Buchanan, MD, professor of medicine, the Bernard J. Hanley Chair in Medicine and the school’s Vice Dean for Research.

Among the 191 schools surveyed in fall 2020 and early 2021, 129 responded for the rankings.

Numbers highlight US dominance in clinical research

As the leading country in health-sciences output in the Nature Index, the United States’ Share is almost 8,500, higher than the next 10 leading countries combined. As a result, US institutions feature prominently among the leading research organizations for the subject, with 30 of the top 50 being based there.

The country’s dominance means that it comes top for Share in all but seven of the journals tracked by the Nature Index in the subject. This includes large general journals such as Nature Communications and specialist medical publications such as The New England Journal of Medicine . PLOS Medicine and Gut are two examples where authors based elsewhere (the United Kingdom and China) made the largest contribution.

Proportion bar showing the leading five countries' Share and percentage of their contribution to health-sciences articles in 6 journals

Source: Nature Index. Data analysis by Aayush Kagathra. Infographic by Simon Baker, Bec Crew and Tanner Maxwell.

The United States is the clear frontrunner among the leading five countries for health-sciences research, with a Share almost four times higher than China, in second place. The United Kingdom is third, with a Share of almost 1,500, a higher placing than its fourth position overall in the Nature Index.

Bar graph showing the leading countries in health-sciences output by Share in 2022-23 in the Nature Index

Out of the top 25 countries for health-sciences articles in the Nature Index, five nations have a Share that makes up at least 29% of their overall footprint in the database across all subjects. Denmark, whose research is boosted by the success of companies such as Novo Nordisk, has the highest ratio in this regard at almost 40%.

Bar graph showing five of 25 countries with the highest proportion of health-sciences output in the Nature Index

As Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is the leading institution for high-quality health-sciences research, its involvement in the top institutional partnership in the field is no surprise. But its dominance does not extend to all the other leading collaborations, some of which involve institutions outside the United States.

Bar graph showing the leading global institutional collaborations in health sciences in the Nature Index for 2022-23

The difference in Nature Index health-sciences output between the leading academic institution, Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and other top institutions is a Share of more than 600. Compared with Harvard, most of the leading institutions also have a lower proportion of their overall Nature Index output in health sciences.

The University of Toronto in Canada and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, are the only other academic institutions with a health-sciences Share of over 200. They also have a relatively strong focus on health sciences, with over 35% of their overall Nature Index research output in the subject area.
