- is a unique identifier used for researchers on Publons , Web of Science , and InCites
Web of Science ResearcherID migrated to Publons in 2019. Unlike Scopus where the ID is automatically assigned, you need to register a Publons Profile and add publications on the profile yourself. See below more on Registering a Publons profile and integrating Publons with your ORCID.
REGISTER & MANAGE YOUR PUBLONS PROFILE
REGISTER YOUR PUBLONS PROFILE:
- Unlike Scopus where a researcher ID is automatically assigned, you need to register a Publons Profile and add publications on the profile yourself.
- Please check if you have an existing ResearcherID on Publons account before creating a new one. This can be done by conducting a search on Web of Science using the RESEARCHER search option.
- See below examples of author profiles on Web of Science WITH and WITHOUT a Web of Science ResearcherID:
Web of Science profile that DO NOT have a Web of Science ResearcherID assigned and needs to be claimed by the author:
Important : If you have a profile that does not have a Web of Science ResearcherID assigned (as above), you can select Claim my record (see below):
You will then be asked to Proceed to Claim this record
This will then take you to the page where you can register for a Publons acccount (see below). You will then be allowed to verify details on the account i.e. name, affiliation, publications etc.

What is Publons?
Publons is a profile tool from Clarivate Analytics, which also owns Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports (which publishes the Journal Impact Factor), that allows researchers to aggregate their research activity as authors, journal editors, and peer reviewers.
It is a unique tool for demonstrating impact of peer review (among other forms of research outputs), and the platform's verified reviews are tracked by Altmetric , a data provider that tracks online attention to research.

Web of Science Researcher Profile Overview
Web of Science Guide
History of Author Profiles in Web of Science
Many researchers are familiar with ResearcherID or Publons. In April of 2019, Clarivate integrated ResearcherID into Publons. All previously existing ResearcherIDs were merged with their Publons profiles, allowing users to keep all their publications and metrics together. New Publons users will be assigned a ResearcherID as a unique identifier. In August 2022, Publons was full merged into the Web of Science Platform and renamed the Web of Science Researcher Profile.
A full history of author profiles in Web of Science is available here .
Introducing Web of Science Researcher Profiles
- View/claim your author record in Web of Science . This record is algorithmically generated and can be incorrect. Claiming it will make it more accurate
- Link to your ORCiD account (if you have one)*
- Add your publications from Web of Science
- Add instances of being a peer-reviewer for journals
Tip: *Permitting your ORCiD account to automatically sync with your Web of Science Researcher Profile will help keep both profiles current.
- Links you to your publications, imported from Web of Science , ORCID, or your bibliographic reference manager (e.g. EndNote , Zotero or Mendeley)
- Provides citation metrics, automatically updated based on the Web of Science Core Collection (and ORCID, if linked)
- Records, verifies, and showcases peer review contributions, and allows you to indicate your interest in reviewing for a journal
Provides you with a downloadable academic record summarizing your scholarly impact metrics within Web of Science as an author, editor and peer reviewer
Limitations
- Not interoperable with other systems, aside from ORCID
- Citation metrics are tracked for publications indexed in Web of Science only
Additional Information
A Web of Science Researcher Profile is freely available to use, and does not require subscription access to Web of Science. We do have full subscription access to Web of Science at the UW-Madison.
You can find full help information from Web of Science here .

What is web of science researcher profile and what happened to publons print.
Modified on: Thu, 18 Aug, 2022 at 5:59 AM
What is Web of Science Researcher Profile and what happened to Publons?
Web of Science Researcher Profiles are the next stage in the evolution of Clarivate’s researcher profile offering after replacing Publons. Web of Science Researcher Profile is the only profile where researchers can track their publications , citation metrics , handling editor work , and peer reviews for journals, conferences, and funders in one place.
Why did this happen?
This migration of Publons profiles into the Web of Science occurred to combine Clarivate’s two researcher representations (profiles and Web of Science author records) into Clarivate’s pre-eminent researcher-facing platform and simplify the experience of those researchers and administrators tracking their research outputs.
The successful acquisition of Publons in 2017 strengthened Clarivate in the peer review space and as a leading global provider of research information to enable academia, corporations, publishers and governments to accelerate the pace of research. Publons products and services grew and strengthened under Clarivate to become the global peer review profile & service offering used by 2.5M researchers and almost 500 partners today.
To build on this success and consolidate Web of Science’s researcher-first approach Publons profiles and peer review services are moving under the internationally recognised, flagship Web of Science brand.
This will mean researchers get recognition for their publications, peer review, editorial work on a Web of Science branded profile, allowing them to build their record & reputation with the Web of Science brand.
In addition, the peer review service offerings used by almost 10,000 journals will now be provided by Web of Science, already a trusted data & analytics partner.
What services does Web of Science offer to Partners?
Web of Science offers partner services that help publishers and journals to acknowledge the efforts of their reviewers and find, screen, and connect with the subject matter experts needed to peer review manuscript submissions.
We have two paid-for products:
Reviewer Recognition Service : Web of Science integrates into the reviewer workflow so academics can track and verify every review and editorial contribution on-the-fly, and in full compliance with journal review policies. We integrate seamlessly with all submission systems to automate the process of recognizing your reviewers.
Web of Science Reviewer Locator a great new search tool to help you quickly find the best reviewers, combining the power of Web of Science researcher profile's exclusive peer review database with the unparalleled Web of Science author and citation index.

What is ResearcherID?
ResearcherID is a unique identifier for researchers on Publons, Web of Science, and InCites. It is used by researchers to track their publications and ensure their publications are correctly attributed to them across Web of Science collections. Publons allows researchers to easily add publications, track citations, and manage their Web of Science record.
- Create or manage your ResearcherID
Benefits of a ResearcherID
- Add publications, track citations, and ensure their publication records are correctly attributed across Web of Science (all for free and without requirement for institutional entitlements).
- Build a more complete profile of research impact by automatically tracking peer review and editorial history alongside publications.
- Publications can be imported from Web of Science or ORCID, or through searches or uploads.
- Metrics are available to monitor the scope and reach of publications (including h-index).
Web of Science's Process
- Each night, Publons assigns a Web of Science ResearcherID to any profiles with one or more Web of Science Core Collection-indexed publications that do not yet have a ResearcherID.
- Any publications you add to your Publons profile will then be linked to your Web of Science ResearcherID when anyone searches for you on Web of Science.
- Please allow up to two weeks for changes you make on Publons to be reflected on Web of Science.
