How to Craft an Effective Welder Cover Letter

Salesperson pops out of computer screen to depict outselling the competition with sales cover letter

While writing a welding cover letter, you’ll want to think of the job description as your blueprint to success. It’ll outline the primary job skills each company is looking for, such as metal fabrication or pipeline welding.

Then, it’s just a matter of assembling all the pieces in a way that shows your welding skills are the right fit for each company’s mission. For example, how you’ll use OSHA safety skills during gas welding to ensure safe fabrication processes.

Create a greeting and intro that stands out

The first step in assembling your welding cover letter will be locating a hiring manager’s name to use in the greeting and intro. Use the analytical skills you use when reviewing blueprints to review the job description and company website to try to find a contact person.

Once you get into the intro paragraph, it’s time to showcase a couple of key welding skills and how your abilities fit with the company’s mission. For instance, you could write about how your experience in mechanical engineering and arc welding will help you uphold a company’s quality control standards.

The following example is a good start but needs more specifics about the applicant’s connection to the company’s mission or welding skills that make them a good fit.

Try to get more specific than this!

Dear Mr. Sanchez,

I was excited to see your field welder job opening. I believe my skills and experiences will make me a great addition to your field service team.

The opener below is a better example of an applicant showcasing how their arc welding and AWS skills and experiences fit the company’s needs.

A stellar opener with specific welding skills!

Dear Ms. White:

In an industry where 22.8% of manufacturing companies in Indiana have difficulties procuring highly skilled welders, I’m eager to present myself as a potential solution to this gap at Allison Transmission. Bringing eight years of hands-on welding experience and in-depth knowledge of arc welding techniques, complemented by AWS certification, I’m convinced that I can be valuable to your production department.

Add the right details in the body of your welder cover letter

In the body of your welding cover letter, it’ll be important to showcase what you can achieve on the job.

To do so, include actionable examples of previous work achievements , emphasizing key metrics like production accuracy or assembly times.

If you don’t have much welding experience, you could also write about what you achieved while obtaining relevant education, like a welding technology degree. Or include transferable experiences, such as working on assembly at an auto repair shop.

An excellent body paragraph with essential welding skills!

During my tenure at Mid West Fabricating, I tapped into my familiarity with different welding equipment and used robust MIG and TIG welders to develop long-lasting joints. My proficiency with these tools brought about a significant 21.7% increase in welding process efficiency within the first nine months.

Add the right finishing touches in the closing of your welder cover letter

As you close out your welding cover letter, you’ll want to think about how you can reinforce the impact you’ll have on the job. Try to rephrase your connection to the company’s mission and a couple of skills that will be essential to success. For instance, you could explain how you’re eager to use your pipeline welding skills to ensure effective plumbing systems are created for every client.

It’s also best practice to say thank you and end with a call to action, such as “I’m excited to discuss further how my MIG and TIG welding skills will make me a great addition to your team.”

The example below could use some work since the applicant doesn’t list any specific welding skills or use a call to action.

A bit too vague!

I believe my welding skills will help me create an outstanding client experience as part of your team. Thank you for your consideration.

Beth Kendricks

The closer below is a better example of an applicant presenting specific skills in plasma cutters and TIG welders that will help Duke Energy achieve its mission of leading the energy sector to a sustainable future.

An impactful closer relating to the bank’s needs!

With my plethora of academic and real-world experiences in welding and a profound desire to bolster my skills while contributing to Duke Energy, I firmly believe I’m the ideal candidate for this role. I look forward to exploring how my hands-on skills in TIG welders and plasma cutters can bolster your company’s mission to lead the energy sector to a sustainable future.

Oliver Svensson

You should keep your welder cover letter to a single page. Hiring managers review applicants quickly, so keeping it brief will help your primary skills in OSHA safety and metal fabrication stand out.

You should write a custom cover letter for each job. It’ll help you stand out for different qualifications that companies are seeking, such as one company that performs MIG welding and another that uses gas welders.

Emphasizing three to five skills throughout your cover letter will work best for welding cover letters. Focus on ones that align with core company needs, such as MIG or flux-cored systems that are essential in arc welding.

Now, let’s learn exactly how to write a welder resume:

1. Choose the Best Format for Your Welder Resume

Whether you’re a freelance welder doing home repairs or an industrial welder at a busy factory, structure keeps things, well, structured .

Same here—

The right welding resume template makes it easy for hiring managers to read and keeps it all in a recognizable order.

Here’s how to format a welder resume :

  • Start with your contact info in the resume heading section .
  • Keep it legible by using resume sections with bold headings.
  • Choose the ideal resume format for your situation, usually the chronological format .
  • Use a good resume typeface , and use white space to your advantage.
  • Choose the PDF format to save your resume , unless the welding job description says otherwise.

Pro Tip : Before you start writing a first time resume for welding jobs, consider either a welding apprenticeship or a welding course at a technical college, first. As a specialized job, most welding employers want candidates with experience.

2. Write a Welding Resume Objective or Summary

A welder resume objective or summary statement is also known as a resume profile .

This intro statement is 3–4 lines long. It gives hiring managers a brief glimpse into your welding background, metalworking skills, industrial experience, and career goals.

Choose the resume summary if you have welding experience . This intro statement sums up your welding skills and experience, and it includes a key accomplishment to prove you’re the best welder for the job.

Choose the resume objective if you have little or no welder experience . This one states your career goals, and it still gives a numbered achievement to prove your welding competence.

Pro Tip : It’s difficult to “sum up” your welder resume template if it hasn’t been written yet, so write it last, even though it goes first.

3. Create the Perfect Welder Job Description for Resume

Whether working with architectural lighting or at a commercial garage as a welding mechanic, write a resume work history section as powerful as an arc welding gun.

Here’s how to create the perfect welding job description on a resume:

  • Follow your most recent job with the one before it, in reverse-chronological order.
  • Add your former job title , dates worked, company name, and a few key duties.
  • Use a  resume action word (e.g., welder , maintained , etc.) to start each entry.
  • Give welding achievements they can measure to prove your value to them.
  • Tailor the resume to one specific job , rather than sending a generic resume everywhere.

Pro Tip: First time as a welder? If you haven’t had welding experience before, use bullet point entries which document your knowledge of machinery, tools, working with blueprints, etc.

4. Make Your Welding Resume Education Section Shine

The education section on a welding resume—not so important, right?

Whether you’re writing an entry-level welding resume or head MIG welder resume, a poor education section will turn them off like a blowhole.

Here are some resume tips for the education area:

  • If you have plenty of experience in welding, add only your certificate, college name, and location.
  • Include extra details if you’re less experienced, such as relevant coursework or favorite fields of study.
  • Don’t include high school on your resume if you’ve completed technical school or college.
  • Add high school as a second entry if you haven’t finished (or started) technical college.

Welder job statistics

  • About 42,600 openings for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers are projected each year, on average, over the decade [1].
  • The number of jobs in the welding field is expected to increase by 22% [2].
  • 336,000 new welding professionals are needed by 2026. And roughly 84,000 welding jobs will be filled every year until 2025 [3].

5. Highlight Your Welder Skills on the Resume

When working with metal, show them you’ve got mettle .

Here’s how to list the best welder skills for a pipe welder, structural welder resume, or any other resume for welder jobs:

Sample Welder Resume Skills

  • MIG Welding / Gas Metal Arc Welding
  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding / TIG Welding
  • NDE / NDI / NDT
  • Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
  • Plasma Arc Cutting
  • Direct Current Electrode Negative (DCEN)
  • Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP)
  • Semiautomatic Welding
  • Spot Welding
  • Submerged Arc Welding
  • Constant Potential (CP) Welding Machines
  • Prototype Manufacturing
  • Constant-Speed Wire Feeder
  • Air Carbon Arc Cutting (CAC-A)
  • Effective Communication Skills
  • Decision-Making Skills
  • Time Management Skills
  • Project Management Skills
  • Teamwork Skills
  • Creative Thinking Skills

However—

These aren’t the exact skills your prospective employer is looking for.

Do this instead:

  • Jot down all the resume skills you’ve got related to welding, including soft and hard skills .
  • Find the welder job description and keep it open in front of you.
  • Underline skills they seek in the job ad—those are the best resume keywords to use .
  • If one of those skills matches one on your list, that’s a perfect addition to your welding resume!

Pro Tip: A welding resume should focus more heavily on the hard skills (welding tools, welding techniques) over soft skills (decision making skills, communication skills). The welding job interview is where they’ll get to understand that “softer” side of you.

When making a resume in our builder, drag & drop bullet points, skills, and auto-fill the boring stuff. Spell check? Check . Start building a  professional resume template here for free .

6. Add Other Sections to Your Welding Resume

You’ve got a great welder fabricator resume going on by now.

All the other prospective welders—your candidate competitors—have the same resume sections.

Caseharden your welding resume by adding extra sections.

Here are some great additions to a resume for welder jobs:

  • certifications on a resume
  • language skills
  • welding projects
  • awards for a resume
  • welding licenses
  • memberships
  • hobbies and interests
  • volunteering opportunities

7. Attach a Cover Letter to Your Welding Resume

Don't skip the cover letter for welding jobs.

A majority of employers aren’t happy with just a welding resume.

Whether you’re a jeweler or a machinist, give ‘em a welder cover letter as hot as the flame spraying process.

Here’s how to write a cover letter for welding jobs they’ll love:

  • Choose a great cover letter format before you begin.
  • Start your cover letter in a compelling manner.
  • Show off your welding experience and skills.
  • Add key welder achievements to prove your worth to them.
  • End the cover letter with a powerful closing statement.

We’ve got great cover letter tips to help you forge a strong one to attach to your resume. Check those out!

Pro Tip : Don’t forget to follow up on your job application . Shooting off a quick email or making a brief call might be the thing that gets you hired.

Plus, a great cover letter that matches your resume will give you an advantage over other candidates. You can write it in our cover letter builder here.  Here's what it may look like:

  • Highlighting Quantifiable Achievements: The cover letter includes specific figures to describe the candidate's past successes, such as the "30% surge in production efficiency" and "25% reduction in equipment downtime." This provides concrete evidence of the candidate's abilities to deliver results.
  • Alignment with Company Values: The candidate expresses a clear understanding and appreciation for the company's commitment to "maintaining high-quality standards," which helps to establish a cultural fit.
  • Emphasis on Relevant Experience: This cover letter details the candidate's direct experience with "orchestrating the installation of new fabrication equipment," showing hands-on expertise in the field relevant to the Equipment Repair Specialist role.
  • Soft Skills and Customer Service: While technical skills are crucial, the candidate makes a point to mention "customer service" capabilities, acknowledging the importance of client satisfaction in the equipment repair industry.

Standard formatting for your welder cover letter

Structure your welder cover letter, following industry-leading advice, to include:

  • Header - with your name, the role you're applying for, the date, and contact details;
  • Greeting - make sure it's personalized to the organization;
  • Introduction paragraph - no more than two sentences;
  • Body paragraph - answering why you're the best candidate for the role;
  • Closing paragraph - ending with a promise or a call to action;
  • Signature - now that's optional.

Set up your welder cover letter for success with our templates that are all single-spaced and have a one-inch margin all around.

Use the same font for your welder cover as the one in your resume (remember to select a modern, Applicant Tracker System or ATS favorites, like Raleway, Volkhov, or Chivo instead of the worn-out Times New Roman).

Speaking of the ATS, did you know that it doesn't scan or assess your cover letter? This document is solely for the recruiters.

Our builder allows you to export your welder cover letter in the best format out there: that is, PDF (this format keeps your information intact).

The top sections on a welder cover letter

  • Header: This should include the welder's full name, contact information, and the date, which is crucial for the recruiter to know who is applying and how to contact them.
  • Greeting: A professional greeting addressed to the specific hiring manager or company shows the welder’s attention to detail and personalizes the cover letter, indicating their genuine interest in the position.
  • Introduction: Here, the welder should briefly state their intention to apply for the welding position, including mentioning any specific job posting references, to immediately clarify the purpose of the cover letter.
  • Professional Experience and Skills: In this section, the welder should highlight their relevant welding experience and technical skills, such as proficiency in various welding techniques and certifications, which are key qualifications recruiters look for in a candidate.
  • Closing and Call to Action: The welder should end with a strong closing statement that expresses enthusiasm for the position, and a call to action that invites the recruiter to schedule an interview, showing eagerness and proactivity in pursuing the role.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

Certifications and technical skills : Recruiters look for certifications such as a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or Certified Welder (CW) credentials to ensure the candidate has been trained following industry standards.

Hands-on experience : Practical experience with various welding techniques, including MIG, TIG, Flux-Cored, and Stick welding, is highly valued as it demonstrates the welder's versatility and ability to handle different workpieces and environments.

Attention to detail : The ability to produce clean, precise welds and the skill to inspect one's own work for flaws are essential traits, as precision directly affects the structural integrity of the welded objects.

Physical fitness and stamina : Welding is physically demanding work that often involves heavy lifting, bending, and standing for long periods. Recruiters prioritize individuals who are physically capable of handling the job's rigors.

Safety consciousness : A strong emphasis on safety, knowledge of occupational hazards, and a history of adhering to safety protocols are critical, as welding can be dangerous without proper precautions.

Problem-solving skills : The capacity to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to welding equipment, materials, and techniques is important, as it can save time and resources and enhance the quality of the final product.

The welder cover letter salutation: how to address hiring managers

After covering the format of your welder cover letter, let's look at the salutation.

Back in the day, the cordial "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam", might have worked out fine.

But, nowadays, your cover letter should approach hiring managers on a more personal basis.

So, what to do about your cover letter salutation ?

If you've messaged the recruiters and are on a first name basis or a more formal one, use the hiring manager's name in the greeting (e.g. "Dear Sophie," "Dear Ms. Givens", or "Dear Mr. Everett,").

Always aim to make the effort to find out the name of the hiring manager, who'd be assessing your application. Search on LinkedIn, double-check the advert on the corporate website, or message the brand on social media to find out more about the role.

If you can't find the hiring manager's name (and still want to sound professional), use "Dear HR Team,", "Dear Hiring Manager,", or the likes.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Team,
  • Dear [Department Name] Hiring Committee,
  • Dear Mr./Ms. [Last Name],
  • Dear Dr. [Last Name],
  • Dear [Job Title or Department Head],

Your welder cover letter introduction and the value you bring

Moving on from the "Dear Recruiter" to your professional introduction .

Use those first two sentences of your welder cover letter to present the biggest asset you'd bring to the organization.

Don't go into too much detail about your achievement or the skill set, but instead - go straight for the win.

That is - what is your value as a professional?

Would you be able to build stronger, professional relationships in any type of communication? Or, potentially, integrate seamlessly into the team?

That one achievement in your welder cover letter body

The lengthiest part of your welder cover letter is the body.

Within the next three to six middle paragraphs, present yourself as the best candidate for the role .

How can you do that without retelling your whole professional resume?

Select one key achievement that covers job-crucial skills and technologies (and is memorable).

Within the body of your welder cover letter, aim to tell the story of how you achieved your success. Also, write about how this would help out your potential team.

Two ideas on how to end the final paragraph of your welder cover letter

Closing your welder cover letter , you want to leave a memorable impression on recruiters, that you're a responsible professional.

End your cover letter with how you envision your growth, as part of the company. Make realistic promises on what you plan to achieve, potentially, in the next six months to a year.

Before your signature, you could also signal hiring managers that you're available for the next steps. Or, a follow-up call, during which you could further clarify your experience or professional value.

No experience welder cover letter: making the most out of your profile

Candidates who happen to have no professional experience use their welder cover letter to stand out.

Instead of focusing on a professional achievement, aim to quantify all the relevant, transferrable skills from your life experience.

Once again, the best practice to do so would be to select an accomplishment - from your whole career history.

Another option would be to plan out your career goals and objectives: how do you see yourself growing, as a professional, in the next five years, thanks to this opportunity?

Be precise and concise about your dreams, and align them with the company vision.

Key takeaways

Within this Enhancv guide, we've provided you with plenty of advice and inspiration on writing your welder cover letter:

  • Always make sure your welder cover letter is tailored to the role you're applying for to make a good impression on recruiters;
  • In your welder cover letter include a header (with your name, the role you're applying for, date, and contact details) and an introduction of up to two sentences that highlight your key accomplishment or why you'd fit the role;
  • Focus your welder cover letter body on one sole achievement through your career and all the valuable lessons, skills, and know-how you've learned (that are relevant to the role);
  • Ensure your welder cover letter closing statement isn't generic and includes either a call to action or a promise;
  • If you lack professional experience, shift recruiters' focus to a relevant achievement (thanks to your academic or versatile experience) or toward your dreams and goals for professional growth.

Let’s see how to write a welder resume:

1. Start with the Right Welder Resume Format

As a welder, you know that structure is important. Without a clear blueprint, every project can fail.

A welder resume format is a blueprint for your hiring manager and for the ATS (Applicant Tracking System) that will scan your resume (for this reason choose  ATS resume ). Stick to it, and your chances of getting the job increase dramatically.

Welder Resume Format

  • Choose the reverse-chronological resume format . That way, your most recent employment will be easy to spot.
  • Use a readable font, for example, Arial or Georgia. Simple classics make for the best resume fonts .
  • Set your resume margins to 1 inch on all sides of your document.
  • Try to stick to a one-page resume .
  • Include the following resume sections : Header, Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Additional Information (like your certifications, foreign languages, or relevant interests).

Once you finish, save your resume as a PDF . A PDF file will preserve the resume layout so that it’s easy to read on every device. The only exception to this rule is if the job ad asks specifically for a Word document. If so, remember to use a Word resume template .

2. Write a Compelling Welder Resume Objective or Summary

Catch employers' attention right at the beginning of your resume.

Easier said than done?

Not necessarily. Take some time and write a resume profile . State the accomplishments you’re most proud of and put them on the top of your resume.

A job-winning resume summary statement looks like this:

  • Anadjective (hard-working, dependable, or efficient)
  • Job title (Welder)
  • Years of experience (3+, 4+)
  • How you’ll help (perform job safety analysis)
  • Best 1–2 achievements (Employee of the Month)

But what to do if you’re just starting in the industry and don’t have any achievements to put on your resume yet?

Opt for a resume objective statement , the profile of choice for entry-level and career-change resumes .

In the resume objective, focus on your experience from other jobs and from school, and mention any transferable skills.

Expert Hint: The purpose of a professional summary is to introduce yourself and list your proudest achievements. Write your summary or objective at the end. You will have an overview of your accomplishments and skills by then.

3. Add a Targeted Welder Job Description and Skills Sections

You’ve worked on oil rigs and bridge constructions. When it comes to welding, you’ve seen it all.

Now you have to demonstrate that to your next employer.

That’s what the resume work experience section is for.

This is important: you should target each job ad with a dedicated resume . On the surface, it might seem that every employer is simply looking for a welder.

But if you read the job ad carefully, you’ll see that they’re looking for people with different skills and experience.

Follow these guidelines to write a welder resume job description section:

  • Read the job posting carefully.
  • Take a closer look at skills and requirements. These will be your resume keywords .
  • Note down situations when you’ve applied those skills in your work.
  • Add numbers to show the effect of your work. Use action words .

Stand out from the crowd by emphasizing your professional achievements—rather than describing basic responsibilities, focus on how you succeeded in your roles.

Now, let’s talk about the skills to put on a resume . They can make or break your applications.

How to nail this section of your resume?

The good news is that you can apply the same techniques as with the job description part:

  • Tailor the skills section to the job ad.
  • Focus on skills mentioned in the job posting.

Remember, you have to fit all the critical information on one page, and 5–10 skills will be enough.

Welder Resume Skills

  • Gas Metal Arc Welding
  • Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
  • Semiautomatic Welding
  • Spot Welding
  • Stick Welding
  • Prototype Manufacturing
  • Air Carbon Arc Cutting (CAC-A)
  • Direct Current Electrode Negative (DCEN)
  • Direct Current Electron Positive (DCEP)
  • Submerged Arc Welding
  • Constant Potential (CP) Welding Machines
  • MIG Welding
  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding / TIG Welding
  • NDE / NDI / NDT
  • Attention to detail
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Interpersonal Skills
  • Leadership Skills
  • Communication Skills
  • Technical Skills
  • Time Management Skills

Expert Hint: Concentrate on your hard skills specific to welder jobs while writing your resume. You will be able to show your soft skills during the interview.

4. Make Your Welder Resume Education Shine

Although most welding jobs don’t require more than a high school diploma and relevant training, you should still list your education on your resume . It’ll provide a more complete picture of you as a professional—plus, if you skip it altogether, employers will wonder whether you finished high school at all.

Experienced applicants can simply state their school name, certification or degree, and graduation date. The highest level of education will be enough—so if you have a college degree, don’t list your high school.

Writing a resume with no experience requires more effort, but you can still highlight the necessary skills.

In bullet points, state any extracurricular activities, projects, volunteer work, or relevant coursework . All of these can work as proof of your abilities on an entry-level welding resume. For example, being captain of the football team shows your leadership and teamwork skills, alongside physical strength.

5. Include Extra Sections on Your Welder Resume

You’ve got the essential sections covered: job description, education, skills.

Now it’s the time to distinguish yourself from other candidates.

By adding extra sections to your welder resume!

Here are some great additions to your resume:

  • Additional Activities
  • Foreign Languages
  • Hobbies and Interests
  • Volunteering
  • Professional References

Is a one-page resume not enough to highlight all your achievements and skills? Don’t worry; you still have some space to convince a recruiter to hire you.

Write a cover letter that will make your experience shine! Don’t treat it as an optional addition, either: our HR statistics show that almost half of recruiters will dismiss job applications that don’t have a cover letter. 50/50, that’s not a chance worth taking!

Double your impact with a matching resume and cover letter combo. Use our cover letter generator and make your application documents pop out.

For a welder resume that flows:

  • Use the welder resume format. This format highlights your most valuable skills and experience.
  • Analyze resume keywords from the welder job description.
  • Add skills sections to show your hard and soft skills.
  • Write a welder cover letter to increase your chances of getting hired.

Tips for Writing Your Welder CV

Welder overview.

The main responsibility of a welder is to fuse and fabricate metal components to each other. Some of this is outlined in the welder CV example. Welders work with their hands and must have strong, precise hand and eye coordination to perform this exacting work. The tools that they use during their daily tasks can be hazardous without the proper personal protective equipment. Welders work with many different types of welding tools to cut and join pieces. They also spend time prepping their welding work by cleaning parts, ensuring proper alignment, checking over quality, finishing the edges of a piece and reading instructions for the design portion of the project.

Skills and Knowledge to Include in Your Welder CV

As you get ready to put together your CV, be sure to consult the welder CV example for sample details of skills and knowledge in this field. Employers may expect a welder to have a post-secondary certificate, and you can mention this in the education section of your CV. The employer may also require candidates to have completed an apprenticeship, which can also be part of your education section. Employers usually expect their welding workers to have an extensive amount of knowledge and experience with many different types of welding tools. Make sure you give examples of the types of tools you’ve used to demonstrate your proficiency with each one.
