What is a YouTube banner?

A YouTube banner is the large image across the top of a channel page. It’s one of the first elements a viewer sees when they view a channel. On top of the image (that can include text in the design), YouTube banners also include website and social media links in the bottom right corner.

A YouTube banner serves a similar function as Facebook cover photos , and its main purpose is to visually introduce your channel—and brand.

But it can do more than just look cute. Some ways you can strategically use a YouTube banner include:

• Promoting new products or services in the image
• Adding text that describes what viewers can expect from your channel, how often you upload new videos, and why they should subscribe
• Making sure your YouTube banner is consistent with your brand across other social media platforms
• Including a call-to-action (CTA) in the design

YouTube banners can effectively and efficiently share your brand’s message with newcomers to your channel, with minimal effort on your end.

YouTube banner dimensions

Before you start creating a YouTube banner, you need to be aware of what size it should be. An incorrectly sized banner can lead to issues like unreadable text or an important part of your image getting cut off.

Keep in mind that people will see your YouTube channel art on desktop computers, mobile devices, and even smart TVs. Use the following YouTube banner dimensions to ensure your image shows up correctly on all devices:

• Minimum dimension for upload: 2,048 x 1152 px with an aspect ratio of 16:9
• Minimum safe area for text and logos: 1,235 x 338 px
• Maximum width: 2,560 x 423 px
• File size: 6MB or smaller

How to upload or change a youtube banner.

Once you’ve created your new YouTube banner, it’s time to upload it to your channel page. If you used Hootsuite’s YouTube banner templates, there won’t be any need to resize the banner to ensure it fits perfectly.

Here’s how to upload or change the banner on your YouTube channel page on desktop.

Step 1: Go to YouTube Studio and sign in to your account.

Step 2: Select Customization on the left menu. Then, choose Branding.

Step 3: Click Upload under Banner Image, and then select an image to upload as your YouTube banner.

Step 4: If necessary, select the preview mode and crop the image. Select Done.

Step 5: Choose Publish.

If you want to upload your YouTube banner with your mobile device, here’s what you need to do:

Step 1: Open the YouTube app or YouTube Studio app.

Step 2: Tap your profile picture in the top right corner.

Step 3: Select Edit channel. (If you are using the YouTube app, you’ll need to tap Your Channel first and then Edit channel or click on the pencil icon).

Step 4: Edit your banner image by clicking on the camera icon in the upper right corner of the banner.

Your YouTube banner should be designed with your overall YouTube marketing strategy in mind. Do you need to include a specific CTA to support your social media goals? Should you encourage viewers to subscribe to your channel? You may simply create a YouTube banner around your brand’s personality, and that’s a great option too.

You can also use your YouTube banner to promote products. @1bike1world uses its YouTube banner to share a children’s book about Nala the cat and her travel adventures.

A YouTube banner can also be used to encourage viewers to become subscribers by telling them what to expect. Chad and Claire’s channel banner clearly state what their YouTube videos will be about and how often to expect new videos.

Whatever you decide, make sure you create a YouTube banner that supports your goal.

2. Optimize for desktop and mobile (ad stay within the “safe area”)

22% of YouTube viewers are watching from a mobile device. That means that, although your YouTube banner is technically 2,560 x 1,440 px, most people will see an area much smaller than this.

Make sure to include the most important information in the “safe area” of your YouTube banner, i.e., within an area of 1,546 x 423 px. This ensures your text or important graphics are shown no matter what device is used to view your profile.

You’ll also want to double-check that your text is readable on smaller devices like a phone.

3. Consider adding your logo

First things first. Who are you? Make sure that’s clear right off the bat. New visitors to your page will want to know.

Place your logo in an obvious, visible spot against a color that makes it pop. Also, make sure it’s within the “safe area”.

Take the Elle YouTube channel , for example. Its logo is black and placed against a lighter-shaded background ensuring that it stands out. It also pulls double-duty by featuring Elle’s 2022 Women in Hollywood Honorees to promote new content from the magazine.

4. Choose consistent brand colors and fonts

This almost goes without saying, but make sure your YouTube banner is consistent with the way you present your brand across your online presence. Viewers can easily recognize your brand when you have a clear trend with your branding.

This rule stands even if your YouTube presence is more laid back or wackier than your other social channels. People who are looking to specifically follow your brand are more likely to click that follow button if they know they’ve got the “right” version of you on YouTube.

5. Have a clear focal point

Like any billboard ad, the simpler the message, the easier it will be received. Don’t try to do too much with your YouTube channel art.

Instead, use this small space wisely on what you want viewers to focus on about your brand. Make your message obvious. You can do this simply by sticking to one image and a logo against a simple background.

This is great! Because chances are if someone has taken the time to visit your YouTube page, they’re also interested in the rest of your online presence.

It’ll be important to design your YouTube channel art with nothing important in the bottom right corner—except for a background color that helps your icons stand out.

7. Pin an important video below your YouTube banner

Known as a channel trailer video, YouTubers can permanently exhibit a video at the top of their channel page right underneath the YouTube banner. This pinned video can highlight your best work, latest video, or most viewed video.

You can take this an extra mile by creating an actual trailer. Similar to movie trailers, you can create a trailer for your channel content and share what you cover in your videos and pique a viewer’s interest.

8. Add CTAs

The First Part of Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga Bodes Poorly for Parts 2, 3, and 4

Thirty-four years ago, Kevin Costner debuted his corny, stirring, culturally iffy Western drama Dances with Wolves . It would go on to win a heap of Oscars, including the director prize for Costner. That success seemed to augur the arrival of a new actor-turned-auteur, a whole two years before Clint Eastwood won his Oscar for Unforgiven . But Costner’s directorial follow-up, The Postman , rang not even once; it was an expensive debacle that kept Costner away from the director’s chair for nearly a decade. He then returned to form, on a smaller scale, for Open Range , before going dormant once more.

In recent years, though, Costner has had a revival as an actor on the smash-hit neo-Western series Yellowstone. This, in turn, has given him the cachet to once again revisit the open skies and blazing guns of his cherished genre. He quit the series (for various scheduling reasons, it has been reported ) and got to work on Horizon: An American Saga , a four-part epic that, one hoped, would be the kind of sweeping, old-fashioned movie event (of the non-superhero or sci-fi kind) that hardly exists anymore.

Chapter 1 of Horizon premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, which seemed like a good omen. Surely this swank, pomp-and-circumstance festival would only premiere a film of quality—it could be a little hokey, but there’s nothing wrong with that if done well. But unfortunately, Horizon is far from stately, or even coherent. A jumble of clichéd plots rendered in washed-out color (and washed-out performances), Horizon may rival Megalopolis as the biggest American boondoggle at this year’s Cannes. Sure, what appears disorderly may turn out to be genius by the time we’ve seen the end of the project—but ten hours is an awfully long time to wait to find out.

The strangest, most dismaying thing about the film is that it doesn’t feel like a film at all . Costner, who co-wrote the script with Jon Baird , introduces us to a television season’s worth of characters and plot threads. He jumps from one location to another, much as Game of Thrones did. Yet Costner never lets us feel the grand interconnectedness of these stories. They play as distractions from each other, intruding when something else was maybe, possibly about to find some traction. The film ends with a scenes-from-the-next-installment clip reel, as if to entice us with more to come. But despite the first chapter’s three-hour runtime, we haven’t been given space to get interested in what’s being teased. The writing and direction is so erratic and confused that it’s near impossible to figure out who several characters are, let alone what they are seeking to accomplish.

The three central narratives, as I see it, concern the ragged townspeople of a settlement in the San Pedro River valley (called Horizon) ; a gruff gunslinger making his way across the mountains further north with a woman and a child in tow; and a Santa Fe Trail wagon train snaking its way toward Horizon. (I think?) There is, halfheartedly, a fourth thread, about schisms within the Apache tribes who are native to the territory on which Horizon was hastily built. But the film only pays them lip service. Mostly they function as the brutal antagonizers of the Horizon townsfolk, who are nearly wiped out in a nighttime raid that is one of the film’s very few action sequences—the rest is the dullest and hoariest of talk.

Trying to suss out the film’s politics with regard to colonialism and indigenous people proves impossible when so much of the runtime must be spent simply trying to puzzle out what is happening. It often feels that Costner has cut out every other scene; crucial plot has developed off-screen and we are then thrown into the result. When exactly did Sienna Miller ’s grieving widow get sweet on Sam Worthington ’s blandly decent Army captain? How are Costner’s brooding lone gunman and Abbey Lee ’s hooker with a heart of gold finding themselves in any given location, and why? Is there some reason Luke Wilson ’s wagon train leader and the two bumbling British marrieds in his charge are only introduced two hours into the story?

These are vexing and tedious questions. Costner could at least ease the frustration of watching the movie with some lovely scenery and kinetic shootouts. But while the locations—autumnal and enormous—are no doubt stunning, Horizon captures them in flat TV tones. The motivation for any of the shootouts is murky; their editing even murkier.

The Western may be as hard to make great as any other genre, but it is perhaps easier to make good. Take one group of characters—a family, a posse, a town—and set them against the elements and their fellow man. It’s a trusty formula that many directors have successfully tweaked to both honor a tradition and do something new. But Horizon ’s unwieldy ambition demands ever more scope, tangling itself up in a hamfisted effort to document the whole of Western expansion during the Civil War era. Perhaps all will cogently, even movingly, converge in Chapter 2, but there’s little reason to have faith. This first foray sets a table that seems beyond saving by the end. At least Horizon accomplishes one staggering feat: it makes one wonder if we were maybe a little too hard on The Postman .

Movie Review: Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt deserve more than Netflix’s ‘Mother of the Bride’

Romantic comedies are in a destination wedding rut. Perhaps it’s a collective post-COVID wanderlust kicking in, or, more cynically, some combination of tax credits and a place producers want to spend time. But between “ Ticket to Paradise ,” “Anyone But You,” “ Shotgun Wedding ” and now Netflix’s “ Mother of the Bride ,” the conceit is starting to curdle.

The problem is bigger than the setting, of course. There’s only so much heavy lifting a picturesque location, photogenic bodies and enviable resort outfits can do to make up for a lame story. Also, the appeal of an out-of-reach travelogue is limited in this age of influencers living wildly extravagant lifestyles around the clock on Instagram and TikTok (not to mention the sharp ways “White Lotus” has skewered and luxuriated in those worlds).

“Mother of the Bride,” now streaming on Netflix, wonders what might happen if you find out a few days before the wedding that your kid (Miranda Cosgrove) is marrying the offspring of the guy who broke your heart. That’s what happens to Brooke Shields’ Lana. She arrives in Phuket, Thailand, for her daughter’s wedding, meets the groom (Sean Teale), turns around and sees that his father is her college ex, Will (Benjamin Bratt). Barely a minute passes before they both fall into a pond.

Later, she’ll walk in on him emerging from the shower, hit him in a sensitive spot playing pickleball and, after they’ve made some progress, overhear the wrong conversation at the wrong time. This is a movie that is adhering to some kind of romantic comedy checklist, but whose ingredients add up to very little in the end.

Our tolerance for a silly set-up in a romantic comedy is usually pretty generous if we’re given a clever, charming script and authentic emotions. Just think of how ridiculous so many of the greats sound on paper, from “Sabrina” to “Sleepless in Seattle”? Is it fair to compare “Mother of the Bride” to Nora Ephron and Billy Wilder? Maybe not, but it never hurts to be aware of a North Star, which veterans like screenwriter Robin Bernheim Burger and director Mark Waters no doubt are. Just look at the title. This movie even has a romantic foil in a younger doctor (Chad Michael Murray) who is smitten with Lana, which can’t help but remind of Keanu Reeves in Nancy Meyers’ “Something’s Gotta Give.”

But this is so wildly contrived from the start that you never get to that moment where you’re enjoying it enough to stop asking questions, like did Lana never google Will in the 20 years they’ve been apart and find out that he’s a wildly rich and successful businessman? Or why would a major corporation offer an intern who has a barely maintained lifestyle Instagram that she started freshman year of college “six figures” to help promote their luxury hotels? Why are we supposed to root for these young people with seemingly infinite resources (one of their wedding presents in a multimillion Tribeca loft) who agree to get married in a month because a brand asks them to? Maybe more fundamentally, did the kids and a wedding have to be involved in this story at all? Does it make the idea of Will and Lana getting back together too weird to be fun? Couldn’t they have simply run into one another at a resort?

I won’t go so far as to say that “Mother of the Bride” feels like an AI creation but it does feel at least a little stitched together from pieces of other romantic comedies of varying quality. Why cast a capable comedian like Rachel Harris as the best friend only to have her say lines like “Is he on the menu”? Or give Wilson Cruz so little to do as Will’s brother?

And it’s a shame, too, because Shields and Bratt came ready to play, to fall in the pond and be minimally clothed for comedy’s sake. There must be a new generation of romantic comedy writers and directors who grew up on Ephron and Meyers out there and are ready to give us something that’s commercial and glossy but also smart and fun to revisit (ahem, remember “Set It Up”?). Maybe they just need to be given a shot.

“Mother of the Bride,” a Netflix release streaming Thursday, is rated TV-PG. Running time: 90 minutes. One and a half stars out of four.

YouTube ‘s message to Madison Avenue: The video giant isn’t like traditional TV — it’s bigger, with literally billions of viewers, and better at targeting relevant audiences.

At its annual Brandcast event, held Wednesday during the TV biz’s upfronts week, YouTube drilled home massive scale. On average, viewers watch more than 1 billion hours of content on TV screens daily. According to Nielsen’s total TV and streaming report for the U.S., YouTube has had the No. 1 share in streaming watch-time every month on American TVs since February 2023.

“Our creators are the future of entertainment,” YouTube chief business officer Mary Ellen Coe told the crowd. “We’re adding more of our incredibly talented creators [to the YouTube Select Creator Takeovers program], including many you’ve seen here tonight, so you have even more choice when deciding which creators you want to work with.”

Mohan, in his introductory remarks, argued that YouTube creators should be eligible to win Emmy Awards. “Creators are drawing audiences on the big screen because they’re the new Hollywood,” he said. “They have business strategies, writers’ rooms and production teams… Creators are redefining what we think of as ‘TV.’ And they deserve the same acclaim as other creative professionals. I believe it’s time a creator won an Emmy.”

YouTube’s Brandcast 2024 took place at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall in New York City, which was filled to capacity. A large banner outside the venue declared, “With millions of creators, billions of fans and all the content we love most, there’s only one YouTube.”

It’s the third consecutive year YouTube has held the event during upfronts week. But YouTube is an outlier: Whereas other media companies unveil new TV shows coming to their networks and streaming services, YouTube uses the stage to boast about its massive reach and engagement relative to traditional TV.

As it as done before, YouTube handed the mic to an eclectic group of prominent YouTubers, as part of its pitch to marketers to spend their ad dollars on the platform’s most popular channels in different content categories. Those included Haley Kalil, Cleo Abram, Kinigra Deon, Ryan Trahan, Taty Cokley, Sydney Morgan, Zach King and top gaming streamer Valkyrae .

Also making an appearance was NFL commissioner Roger Goodell (as he did last year ), who was there to promote the league’s deal with YouTube for the NFL Sunday Ticket subscription package of games. Goodell, who came out on stage with former NFL player Shannon Sharpe (host of the weekly “Club Shay Shay” podcast), said YouTube’s distribution of Sunday Ticket in the 2023-24 season was “flawless”: “They really brought the game to our fans in a different way.”

The show was capped off with a relatively quiet performance by nine-time Grammy winner Billie Eilish featuring Finneas, including of her Oscar-winning “What Was I Made For?” from the “Barbie” movie. ( Eilish’s new album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” is out Friday .) Brandcast earlier had sets from Benson Boone and K-pop boy group Stray Kids.

During the event, YouTube announced a new Google AI-powered format optimized for connected TV, using non-skippable ad assets across in-stream inventory. YouTube also is launching branded QR codes for advertisers in interactive placements.

In addition, YouTube said Wednesday that Google and Scripps Sports reached an agreement for locally televised WNBA Friday night games on ION to be streamed on YouTube TV in home and away markets of the teams that are playing. YouTube TV will be the only pay-TV provider carrying both local and national WNBA games this season, starting May 31 and continuing through the regular season.
