How to change your name and what government agencies to notify

You might change your name through marriage, divorce, or court. Update your new name with Social Security, the motor vehicle office, and other government agencies.

How to legally change your name

The process of changing your name through marriage, divorce, or a court order can vary between states.

Before you get married, you must apply for a marriage license. After you apply for the license and get married, your new name will be reflected on your marriage certificate. Contact the local government where you are getting married to learn about applying for a marriage license and how to change your name.

When you file for divorce, you can change your name back to the name you used before you got married. In most states, you may do so when you apply for your divorce decree. Contact your local government to learn more about changing your name when you file for divorce.

Court order

In most cases, you must file a petition with your local court to change your name. To do so, you may need to file paperwork and appear before a judge to complete the process. Find your local government website and contact your circuit court to get information about how you can legally change your name.

Government agencies to notify when you change your name

Use certified copies of marriage and divorce certificates or name change orders as proof to notify these federal and state agencies that you changed your name.

Notification of Name Change Letter

Rating: 4.9 - 116 votes

A Notification of Name Change Letter is a document used to inform both business and personal contacts of the sender's legal name change . People change their names for many reasons, including marriage, divorce, or gender transition. Once they change their name, they need to find a way to update all of their contacts on this development.

Many organizations, such as health insurance, banks, utilities, and other businesses require a written notice of name change before they will update their official records . This notification letter can be modified as many times as necessary to notify all persons or organizations needed. By using this letter, a person can update all of their contacts at once to make a seamless transition in areas such as work, banks, medical providers, and other areas of their life.

How to use this document

This letter collects all of the information necessary to create a notification of name change that can be sent out to both business and personal contacts. It includes the sender's former name and new name, as well as an opportunity to correct or update their mailing address if necessary. If the sender wishes to notify businesses where they have an account, there is the option to include their account number so the recipient can accurately locate their account in their files.

Once the sender has completed the letter, they should print it, sign it, and send it to any relevant parties who must be updated on their name change. Some of the organizations and companies who should be informed of a legal name change using this letter include employers, landlords, banks, credit rating bureaus, doctors and dentists, professional clubs or associations, credit card companies, and insurance companies, among others. When updating companies, in addition to the letter, the sender should also include some form of proof of the legal name change . Common forms of proof include court orders, marriage certificates, or updated identity documents.

Applicable law

There is no law specifically governing which parties should be updated about a legal name change. However, legal name changes themselves are governed by state law and the requirements to change ones name are very different from state to state . Some states require that notice of name change be published in a newspaper while other states do not have this requirement or offer a publication waiver under certain circumstances.

How to modify the template

You fill out a form. The document is created before your eyes as you respond to the questions.

At the end, you receive it in Word and PDF formats. You can modify it and reuse it.

How to Change Your Name After the Wedding: 2023 Guide

Navigate the name-changing process after marriage seamlessly. Our comprehensive guide offers step-by-step instructions for a smooth transition.

Changing your name after marriage? Use this name change checklist so you don’t miss a step, including the time required for each document.

There are more things to do after getting married than getting those thank you cards mailed on time. (Kudos if you’ve already checked that off!) Changing your name after marriage might be one of them. While this may feel like a daunting task, it’s much simpler than you’d expect once you get the ball rolling. That’s where our handy guide comes in, compiling all the necessary steps to change your name after marriage and even the time commitment for each.

First things first, you’ll need to have a certified copy of your marriage certificate on hand. Once you have that, you can work your way through the steps listed below to cover the most important bases.

Head straight to our printable name change checklist , or jump to a different section below:

  • Get a copy of your marriage certificate
  • Apply for a new Social Security card
  • Apply for a new driver’s license
  • Update your passport
  • Update your car title and registration
  • Notify your employer
  • Notify the United States Postal Service (USPS)
  • Update your voter registration information
  • Update your bank accounts and other financial accounts
  • Update other personal accounts

Now, let's get into it!

1. Get a Copy of Your Marriage Certificate

Time commitment: 20 minutes

Changing your name after marriage first requires a certified physical copy of your marriage certificate. Not to be confused with your marriage license , which is the legal document obtained prior to your ceremony, your marriage certificate is a different document that verifies when and where you were legally married.

You should’ve received your official certificate when your marriage license was issued. For name-changing purposes, however, you should use a certified copy so you can hold onto the original.

A certified copy has a raised seal and can’t be created yourself. Instead, simply call the clerk’s office where your license was filed to request a copy (or two for good measure). Once you pay a small fee ($5-$20), your certified copy will be processed and mailed to you in a few business days.

Team Z tip: While you can technically use your original marriage certificate for name-changing purposes, have a few copies made instead so you can have the original on file.

2. Apply for a New Social Security Card

Time commitment: 1 afternoon

how-to-apply-for-new-ss-card

Before you can change your name anywhere else, you’ll need to apply for a new Social Security card. Head to the Social Security Administration (SSA) website and fill out the application for a new Social Security card . Your Social Security number won’t change, but your legal name will.

Since you can’t submit your application online, you’ll need to mail your completed form to your local Social Security office or apply in person to receive your new card within 10 business days.

Here are the materials you’ll need to apply for a new Social Security card:

  • Valid photo ID (driver’s license, state ID card, military ID, etc.)
  • Proof of name change (certified copy of your marriage license)
  • Proof of citizenship/residence (valid passport or birth certificate)
  • Completed SS-5 form (your application)

For more information, view the SSA’s official instructions for how to apply for a new Social Security card.

Team Z tip: Your passport fulfills both the proof of identity and proof of citizenship requirements, so you might only need one document.

3. Apply for a New Driver’s License

how-to-update-drivers-license

Once you have your new Social Security card, head to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to apply for an updated driver’s license (or state-issued ID card). The documents you’ll need to apply vary by state, but plan to bring the following documents:

  • Your new Social Security card
  • Current driver’s license
  • Proof of name change (a certified copy of your marriage certificate)
  • Proof of address (bank statements or mortgage documents)

Be sure to follow the instructions on your local DMV website to clarify which documents are required in your state.

4. Update Your Passport

passport-update-checklist

If you’re planning to travel outside of the country ( destination honeymoon , anyone?) you’ll need to update your passport. If you’ve had your passport for less than a year, you can do this for free—otherwise, expect to pay a fee of $130.

Here are the materials you’ll need to update your passport:

Completed application form: You'll need one of these three, depending on when your passport was issued or expired

  • Completed DS-82 form (if your passport was issued more than a year ago)
  • Completed DS-5504 form (if your passport was issued less than a year ago)
  • Completed DS-11 form (if your passport has been expired for over five years, you’ll use this form to apply for a new passport)
  • Your current U.S. passport
  • Proof of name change (a certified copy of your marriage license)
  • Valid passport photo (2”x2” color photograph of yourself stapled to your application)
  • Applicable fee (make checks payable to “U.S. Department of State”)

Complete the application form and mail it along with the required documents. If you’re applying for a brand-new passport with the DS-11 form, keep in mind this must be submitted in person at your local office. Find more thorough instructions on the Travel.State.Gov website .

5. Update Your Car Title and Registration

In some states, you may be able to update your car title and registration at the time you update your driver’s license, but most states require you to visit separate departments. Head to your state’s DMV website for accurate instructions on how to update your car title and registration. Each application is unique to the state you’re in, but be prepared to provide information on your vehicle and a certified copy of your marriage certificate.

6. Notify Your Employer

Time commitment: 15 minutes

Don’t forget to let your employer know about your name change. Simply contact your company’s HR department to begin the process.

7. Notify the United States Postal Service (USPS)

While changing your name with the USPS isn’t required, you'll still want to update your new address if you’ve moved after marriage. You can do this easily online .

8. Update Your Voter Registration Information

Time commitment: 30 minutes

Updating your voter registration is easy. Simply fill out and mail the National Voter Registration Application and mail it to the address for your state listed in the State Instructions portion of the application.

Be aware of these exceptions in the following states:

  • New Hampshire doesn’t accept this application—you’ll need to visit your local election office in person.
  • Wyoming doesn’t allow you to apply by mail—you must apply in person at your local election office.
  • North Dakota doesn’t have voter registration, so no action is needed.

9. Update Your Bank Accounts and Other Financial Accounts

Time commitment: 1-2 hours

Most banks will require you to visit your local branch office in person to update your name on your bank accounts and credit cards. You’ll need to bring your updated driver’s license (or passport) and your marriage certificate. This appointment is also a good time to request new credit cards reflecting your name change, along with a new book of checks if needed.

In addition to checking and savings accounts, take care of any other financial accounts you may need to update, including:

  • Retirement accounts
  • Investment accounts
  • Credit cards (if separate from where your savings and checking accounts are)
  • Mortgage loans
  • School loans

If you plan on adding your spouse to your account or opening a joint bank account , you’ll both need to appear at the appointment.

Team Z tip: Once you’ve changed your name with your bank, don’t forget to update any online payment accounts like PayPal, too.

10. Update Other Personal Accounts

Time commitment: Ongoing

Once you’ve gotten the major name change updates out of the way, you can tend to any other updates you may want to make. Your name is listed in more places than you’d think, so it may take some time to remember what needs updating. That’s OK—just update as you go!

Here’s a quick look at other potential accounts to update:

  • Utilities accounts
  • Home mortgage information
  • Cell phone/TV/internet accounts
  • Personal email and social media accounts
  • Alumni associations, professional clubs, and other organizations
  • Legal documents if you’re a business owner
  • Health care providers
  • Will and testament

Can I use my married name when filing this USCIS form?

Home » Can I use my married name when filing this USCIS form?

After marriage, you can begin using your new name immediately. In an opposite-sex marriage, the woman may keep her maiden name, beginning using her husband’s family name, or hyphenate her name with her husband’s name. All of these options are available as long as the name change isn’t done criminally or fraudulently. The same rules apply to name changes in same-sex marriages.

When filing a USCIS application, such as a green card renewal or citizenship application, you will need evidence of the legal name change. Your evidence is a copy of your marriage certificate. Generally, USCIS requires a copy of the certificate if you use the name on the application.

RECOMMENDED: Green Card Name Change After Marriage or Divorce

Other Names

Most USCIS forms also ask if you have used other names. You will need to enter your maiden name and any other versions of your name that you’ve used in the past.

Other Identification

You may have other identification under your previous name. That’s okay. It doesn’t prevent you from using the new name going forward. The marriage certificate provides you the necessary evidence to begin using the new name on the USCIS application.

If you would like to change your name on the other IDs, contact the individual agencies or companies that are responsible for issuing new copies. Again, it’s likely they will need a copy of your marriage certificate as proof of the legal name change.

Mistakes on USCIS forms can cause costly delays or a denial.

Other legal name changes.

If you opt to change your name to something different than your spouse’s name, this requires different documentation. You will need to court to grant your legal name change and issue a document as evidence.

Generally, this is a simple matter. Each state’s requirements are different, but usually require you to fill out some forms. State or county government websites typically have forms online. Once granted, use the documentation provided by the court as evidence of your legal name change.

RECOMMENDED: First Name Unknown: FNU on Visas and Other Documents

The most common reason for changing a name in the register (sometimes known as ‘house deeds’) is after getting married or entering into a civil partnership. Here we’ll look at how to apply to update your name in the Land Register after you’ve tied the knot.

Check your name in the register

One of the biggest cause of delays when dealing with property is when a name is different from the name recorded in the register. HM Land Registry, banks and solicitors all carry out identity checks before a transaction takes place, particularly when re-financing.

It’s common for lenders to refuse to lend money unless your details exactly match the register. So, if you got married and remortgaged at the same time, the lender might insist you update your name with us before they’ll authorise a mortgage offer.

Use our Search for property information from HM Land Registry service to check your name is correct on the register. It costs £3 for a copy of a title register.

Name change by marriage or civil partnership

To make an application to change your name in the register following marriage or a civil partnership, download and fill in an AP1 form . Send the completed form by post, together with your evidence, to:

HM Land Registry Citizen Centre PO Box 74 Gloucester GL14 9BB

You do not have to pay anything to change your name.

How to fill in form AP1

To change your name, you need to fill in panels:

To change your name and address at the same time, you also need to fill in panel 9.

Additional guidance

You can find your local authority on your council tax bill.

The title number is at the top of your title register. Use our Search for land and property information service to download your title register.

Your application is likely to affect the whole of the property rather than just a part of it. Put an ‘X’ in the first box (‘the whole of the title(s)’).

State “Change of name” in the first column, under Applications in priority order. There’s no fee for this, so put 0 under Fees paid.

Enter the documents you’ve included with your AP1 form such as a marriage certificate.

Enter your name if you’re applying or the name of the person applying.

Enter your name, address and email address (if you have one).

If you are only changing your name in the register, you do not need to fill in panel 9. However, if you want to update your contact address at the same time as your name, complete panel 9 and provide evidence of identity with your application. For more information watch our video on how to update your contact address . If you want to update your contact address only, please download and complete  form COG1 .

Sign and date your AP1 form.

Panels you do not need to fill in

To change your name, you do not need to fill in panel:

  • 8 (third party notification)
  • 9 (only fill this in if you are updating your address as well as changing your name)
  • 10 (new charges)
  • 11 (disclosable overriding interests)
  • 12 (confirmation of identity)
  • 13 (for use by conveyancers)
  • 14 if you send us your marriage or civil partnership certificate as evidence

How to update your contact address

Include your evidence

You do not need to send us the original documents, but you must send us a certified copy of the document you used to change your name, such as your marriage or civil partnership certificate. You can certify a document yourself. On the face of the copied document write:

I certify this to be a true copy of the original dated……… signed……………..Name printed…………….date………….

Married abroad

If you were married outside the UK and your marriage or civil partnership certificate is not in English, you must send us a verified translation of the certificate. A verified translation is any document that has been translated, signed, stamped and dated by a professional and qualified linguist (or translation agency) to confirm that it is a true (accurate and complete) representation of the original text.

Notice period

In most cases, when we process a name change application, unless a solicitor has sent it to us, we’ll send a letter to the registered proprietor to tell them there’s been an application to change their name. This is to safeguard against fraud. We cannot complete the application until any notice period stated on the letter has passed or the notice is signed and returned to us, so it could take a few weeks to complete.

Protecting you against fraud

In all cases we need proof of any change of name to guard against fraud. If you simply decide to call yourself something else but have no documentation, we won’t be able to update the register.

For more information on changing your name on the register, see Registering land or property with HM Land Registry .
