Liberation Practices

Herbert Giron

Maria Castro Romero

We have known each other personally for over a decade and although we were developing our praxis in similar directions, we connected professionally at the Eighth European Congress of Community Psychology. Maria was leading a roundtable discussion with Mark Burton, Raquel Guzzo, Steve Melluish and clinical psychology trainees, on what European community psychology can learn from Latin America, where Taiwo was participating. This was the starting point of conversations and Maria inviting Taiwo to teach liberation psychology together. This chapter is based on our experience of joint teaching on a London-based Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology course since 2011 (brief excerpts from the tapes of our teaching session in October 2013 appear in quotation marks and italics), and recorded dialogues between us taking place over meetings between November 2013 and February 2014. This chapter has offered us the opportunity to reflect and build on this shared teaching journey and to sh...

A broad survey of the sociopolitical trends during that time helps locate Liberation Psychology alongside a variety of critical responses in Psychology and other academic disciplines.

UALIMR

Dr. Mark Barton is Professor of Geology and Geochemistry at the University of Arizona and Co-Director of the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources.  Mark earned BS and MS degrees from Virginia Tech (1977, 1978) and a PhD from the University of Chicago (1981). Following a post-doctoral fellowship at the Geophysical Laboratory (Carnegie Institution of Washington), he taught at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) before joining the faculty at the University of Arizona. His research interests and span many aspects of energy and mass transfer in the Earth's lithosphere and their applications to mineral deposits. Mark has published over 90 papers and advised over 70 MS, PSM, and PhD students. His research is on wide-ranging topics from mineralogy to physical modeling has emphasized ore deposit studies with a focus on porphyry, IOCG, sediment-hosted Cu, and various precious metal systems, and their broader geologic and environmental context. Ongoing collaborative studies involve many mining companies and the USGS and were supported by these groups, the US National Science Foundation, Keck Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and Science Foundation Arizona.

Mark is a fellow of and has been active in several professional societies including SGA, the Society of Economic Geologists, the Geological Society of America, and the Mineralogical Society of America; he has received awards from several of these including the Lindgren (SEG) and MSA (MSA). He has served in various capacities including on editorial boards, on U.S. National Research Council Committees, and in other roles for professional societies and government panels. Since joining the UA faculty he has worked actively at the local and national levels to help secure the long term vitality of minerals-related research and education in the United States. After 15 years directing the geology-focused, research-oriented "Center for Mineral Resources," he co-founded the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources which is a state-, industry-, and privately-funded interdisciplinary organization that catalyzes and facilitates research and education related to mineral resources spanning science and engineering to public health and policy. In the early 2000s, he collaborated with his former PhD students David Johnson and Eric Jensen in developing Bronco Creek Exploration, a successful minerals exploration company which is now part of EMX Royalty.

Dr Burton completed an Undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Southampton, followed by an MSc in Molecular Neurosciences at the University of Bristol. He returned to Southampton to study for his PhD investigating the effect of folic acid intake on the regulation of genes that modulate breast cancer development and how epigenetic regulation plays a role. This established an interest in the epigenetics of disease and how intervention at different periods of the life-course can modulate disease trajectories. Dr Burton has worked on a number of research projects within the EpiGen Research Group including investigating the links between methylation adiposity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in adolescence, in collaboration with the University of Western Australia. He has also participated in a number of large cohort studies investigating the cellular and molecular regulation of sarcopenia, testing novel pharmacological compounds in collaboration with a UK-based artificial intelligence industry partner (BenevolentAI). Furthermore, he has worked on three pioneering projects investigating the regulation of non-coding RNA’s in serum from the Hertfordshire sarcopenia cohort, and in sperm from the PREPARE cohort, characterising for the first time the small ncRNA populations. He recently ran a project investigating the single cell transcriptomes of nuclei from cultured primary myoblasts from older people with sarcopenia. Dr Burton hopes to continue with research which will enable the discovery of biomarkers that are predictive of disease risk, to enable molecular targeting through nutritional or pharmacological intervention in order to improve health trajectories.

  • Comment & Response Apixaban to Prevent Recurrence After Cryptogenic Stroke—Reply Hooman Kamel, MD; David L. Tirschwell, MD; Mitchell S. V. Elkind, MD; ARCADIA Investigators JAMA

To the Editor The recent Atrial Cardiopathy and Antithrombotic Drugs in Prevention After Cryptogenic Stroke (ARCADIA) trial 1 did not demonstrate superiority of apixaban over aspirin for secondary prevention in patients with cryptogenic stroke and atrial cardiopathy. In this study, atrial cardiopathy was defined by meeting any of the following criteria: serum N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels greater than 250 pg/mL, P-wave terminal force in electrocardiography lead V 1 greater than 5000 μV × ms, or left atrial diameter index of 3 cm/m 2 or greater. Notably, approximately 46% of participants were enrolled based on the serum NT-proBNP criterion alone. While serum NT-proBNP levels are positively correlated with left atrial remodeling and dysfunction, they are not robust predictors of atrial fibrillation and are influenced by various noncardiac factors such as age, obesity, and kidney function. 2 Thus, use of this criterion alone may not have accurately represented atrial cardiopathy and may have affected the precision of effect estimates of desired interventions. We speculate that the negative results in ARCADIA may be partially attributed to within-study variance because participants could be enrolled solely based on the NT-proBNP criterion. It would be helpful if the authors could provide more information about participants recruited based on electrocardiographic and echocardiographic criteria, which more accurately reflect atrial pathology.
