Bug Fixed

Presentation Board disappeared from Inventory

Dec, 12th 2019

This bug was fixed in  Patch 1.59.73 . There are still some reports of the board going missing. Please use the AHQ thread linked if you still have issues.

My Sim needs to do a term presentation for his class but the board has disappeared from the inventory/lot.

Things have a general tendency to disappear form the inventory, especially if you travel or move. This can also happen with the presentation board.

  • Place the board in your housing instead of keeping it in the inventory
  • Avoid moving during the term
  • Save your game before you travel
  • Save your game under a new name before you move.

Contrary to homework that you can just re-buy on the bookshelves, there’s no option to acquire a new presentation board. Because of this, there’s no solution to this issue and you need to do end the class without doing the presentation.

This mod still seems to do it’s job but since the resources it uses have been updated multiple times, you should not use it. You can try using it at your own risk to get a new board but after you did so, please remove the mod again

The following mod allows you to get a new board from your professor. Click on Computer > University > Email professors about progress  and choose the class with the missing board. You should then get a new board to your inventory.

The Sims 4 Discover University Give Presentation

How to Give a Presentation in The Sims 4 Discover University

Image of Madison Benson

In The Sims 4: Discover University, you’ll find various coursework types that propel your student sim to success in their classes. While some may ask you to prepare term papers, others will ask you to give presentations or take exams. This may sound simple at first, but there is some important information to note before moving further into the school year. If you’re interested in learning more, continue reading to discover how to give a presentation in The Sims 4: Discover University.

Before you can give a presentation, you’ll have to make one! To do this, head into your character’s inventory and look for the presentation board. When you’re ready to begin working on it, place it anywhere in the world and select the board to find “Capture Information”. Click on this to start creating your presentation.

Once you make the presentation and select the board again, you’ll immediately find multiple options:

  • Ask for Feedback
  • Refine and Organize
  • Practice Presenting
  • Give Final Presentation
  • Put in Inventory

Typically, your presentation will start at a low quality. While you can still present it, your grades will be as high if you refine and organize it. Make sure to do this before giving your presentation if you want to maximize your chances of getting an A grade.

When ready, click “ Give Final Presentation ” to head towards the appropriate university building. Your character will bring the presentation board with them and perform over the span of 1-2 hours. Make sure you do this between 8 am-4:30 pm on a weekday, or else you won’t be able to give the presentation.

Once you complete this task, you’ll finish the course’s primary objective. Just make sure to keep an eye on your homework and attend class to maintain high grades.

The Sims 4: How to Get an A in University

If you really want your sims to struggle, you should send them to University. This is one of the hardest expansion packs we’ve gotten thus far for The Sims 4, and it’s well needed.

Having your sim attend University is simple, just go and hope for the best, however, if you want to get an A in University, you’re going to need to put in some work.

While other students will be at keg parties and attending soccer games, you’re going to be at the library or the commons studying into all hours of the night.

If you want to graduate with honours and have your sim get the best possible grades, you should follow this guide to get the most out of going to school.

In this guide we are going to talk about the importance of choosing your course load, attending your classes, doing homework, and making sure to do your end of term work.

Watch The Video

Did you know we have a Youtube Channel ? We make videos to go along with these articles and how to videos, as well as some gameplay stuff. You should definitely subscribe to us on Youtube !

Choosing Where to Live

It may not seem like choosing where you’re going to live for University matters much, it’s just where you sleep. However, there are certain factors that make living off campus on your own a better option.

First, you’ll spend less time cleaning up after other sims when they are messy, which can waste precious studying time. You also won’t have the annoyance of people in your room, or on your computer, or walking in on you while you’re showing like what happens in a dorm room.

Second, living off campus will give you access to a full kitchen on your lot and you won’t have to travel to the University commons just to get every single meal which will save you tons of time.

Finally, living in your own home means that you can give it the Study Spot lot trait which will help your sims pursue their studies and do better in their classes.

If you want your sim to graduate with honours and get all A’s, you should probably live alone, but it is possible to do in a dorm or shared housing.

Choosing Your Course Load

An important factor to consider if you’re trying to do well in University is how many classes you’re planning on taking.

Your sim has the option to take 4 classes, this can be 4 core classes or 3 core classes and an elective. An elective is just a fun class where they can gain a skill that is unrelated to their major.

You can take an elective every semester if you want, as these courses still count toward your degree and they will just give you some new skills that your sim doesn’t yet have.

You don’t have any say over which core classes you’ll be taking for your major, but you can choose how many you want to take. You can even just take 1 class a semester, however, this means you’ll be in school for most of your sim’s life.

Now, if you want your sim to get an A in University, you need to really think about how much work you want to do. If you take a full course load you’re really going to struggle to get straight A’s and still have your sim’s needs be met.

What is a good number of classes? Well, I recommend taking two regular classes and then one elective for a total of three classes . This means that you’ll be in school for 4 terms, or 20 days. You may want to turn off aging because this will be the entirety of your sim’s young adulthood.

Taking 4 classes is a lot and essentially means your sim can’t join any after school activities, organizations or anything else.

Going to Class

A simple fact of life is that failing to go to your classes each day, is going to make you not do as well at school. You won’t fail just because you never attend class (although it is a huge factor), but you won’t get an A either.

You must attend every single class for your all of the classes you’re taking if you want to get straight A’s. Also, you need to be on time for every class, it’s rather simple for you to be late if you live on campus so make sure that your sim isn’t doing anything that could distract them from leaving on time.

Sometimes when you live on campus, your sim will attend class early which is a great option to make sure that you’re leaving on time. All the sims will wait outside the building with their little homework notebooks and it’s absolutely adorable.

You also want to make sure that your sim is in a decent mood before they go to class so they aren’t distracted or in a bad mood. You can even pack a snack or grab a to-go snack from the coffee cart for a quick pick me up in between classes.

Being Active in Class

Although classes in The Sims 4: Discover University are rabbit holes, you still have the option of changing how your sim is learning in that class.

You can click on the little briefcase on top of your sim while they are in class and you’ll be given the following options:

  • Attend Class Normally
  • Chat with Students
  • Actively Listen
  • Sleep in Class
  • Leave Early

Some of these interactions are going to hurt your sim’s grades including: sleep in class, leave early, and chat with students .

If you want your sim to do well, you should choose either actively listen or take notes as these can help. However, this will also decrease your sims fun need quicker than just attending normally.

Doing Homework

Once your sim is enrolled in school they are going to get a black and white homework notebook that you can find in their inventory. This notebook is essential for doing well in University.

You’re going to have homework for every single class that you’re taking that is due before the next time you attend class. This means you need to start your homework before the term actually starts!

Your sim may arrive at University on a Monday, but their term won’t start until the next day, but their homework needs to be done before class. So after your sim has settled, you need to start working on their next day’s homework.

Homework takes a few hours but if your sim has a higher level of the new research and debate skill they will finish their homework quicker which is extremely convenient.

Doing Coursework

Every class that you’re taking will have daily homework, but will also have one larger task that you need to do throughout the course of the term.

There are three different types of coursework your sim may have: presentations, term papers, and final exams.

Preparing Presentations

One of the tasks your sim may need to complete is a presentation . When your term starts you’ll get a presentation board in your sim’s inventory, it’s a giant green board that’s empty when you get it.

You’ll need to drag this item out of your sim’s inventory and place it somewhere on their lot so they can work on it. The first step is to compile all the information on the board, when this task is complete the project will look like a mess.

While you’re working on the project you can hover over it to see the quality, if you want an A we need an excellent or outstanding presentation! At this point, it will probably be poor.

The next step is to organize the board and refine your information until it’s a better qualtiy presentation. You can also ask other sim’s for feedback before you do this to get another perspective and make it even better quality.

Once the project is as good as it’s going to get your sim will get a notification that they are done editing the presentation and continuing to refine won’t do much other than give them more knowledge for the class.

You can still practice your presentation to improve your charisma skill , I suggest you do this at least once if you want to get an A in your class.

Once your sim has practiced their presentation and it is excellent or outstanding quality it’s time to present. You can only present from 8am – 4pm on weekdays, so you need to plan accordingly and it needs to be presented before the last day of classes.

To present, you click on the project and your sim will be sent away into a rabbit hole where they will be gone for around two hours doing their presentation.

Writing Term Papers

The next option your sim may get is to write a term paper, this works pretty similarly to the presentation where you need to complete the paper then edit it and submit it on the computer.

The nice thing about writing papers and doing presentations is that you can get it done right away and don’t need to worry about it every day until the term ends, you can write it in the first day of classes if you want!

A sim who has a really high research and debate skill will finish their term paper much, much quicker which is really helpful. It may even be useful to plan ahead for this and get your teen sims to work on this skill before they age up and attend school.

A term paper is written on the computer under the University > Coursework section. You will spend a few hours writing this paper and it can be done in more than one sitting. There’s also the option to submit a stolen paper, but this is not how you get an A!

Once you finish the first draft of your paper, chances are it’s going to be poor quality. You’ll need to edit the paper at least once, maybe twice until you get a notification letting you know that you aren’t going to be able to make it any better.

At this point, continuing to edit the paper will just give you more knowledge but is really a waste of time since there’s other classes to focus on. At this point you can submit your term paper.

To check the quality of your paper before submitting you can hover over the submit button and it will let you know what level it is so you don’t submit a poor quality paper.

Studying for Exams

When you see that your only coursework for the semester is to take final exam , you may feel excited since all you have to do is write the exam. Well, you’re wrong! You need to study all semester.

If you want your sim to just do okay, you can send them to the exam without any preparation. However, if you want them to get an A, you need to study.

There are a few different ways to study for exams. The first is to click on a computer and under the University section you’ll see university coursework , if you click on that you can see the option to study ! You can choose the class where you have a final exam and this will be helpful.

You can also study using the new research machines that are found in the commons or at the library. You’ll see a study for … option.

Finally, you can purchase a textbook for your courses at one of the kiosks located in the quad at the University. This is also where you can buy items to decorate a dorm room! You can also purchase these textbooks from any bookcase, they are going to cost you §700 though!

If you really want that A in a class with a final exam, you should study at least twice for it whenever you have a chance.

Getting Your Grades

Once you’ve attend your last day of classes and finally finished all of your coursework, your sim will be given their final grades after a few hours. Hopefully, these grades will be filled with A’s since you’ve now learned how to get an a in University!

Final Thoughts

I've been playing the Sims since the first game was released when I was only 5 years old. It's been a huge passion of mine for two decades and I've loved every single minute of it. I also love dogs. And grilled cheese sandwiches. And I think me and Bob Pancakes could be friends.

is there an ideal mood for taking a final exam? thanks

My sims always seem to do well when they are focused

Do you know if it matters at what point in the “term” you submit the paper or present the presentation? like do you get a better grade the quicker you do it or the closer you do it to the end of the class (like when you have the most knowledge from the class)?

I honestly have no idea, I just always make sure it’s excellent or outstanding quality before submitting but have never paid attention to the timing

I wondered about this too, but found out it doesn’t matter how early you submit it. Now I try and submit mine all before term starts!

My Sim maxed her Charisma and Logis skills while at High School and she just started her first term in uni and her research and debate skill is at 8. Will this affect her negatively in getting good grades? I ensured she worked hard at High School so that she could get into a distinguished program. But will her maxed out skill levels now be an issue.

No, it will not be an issue. It makes it easier to get excellent-quality papers if the skills you have maxed out are needed for the course.

University presentation: The 8 most common mistakes and how to avoid them!

It’s not unknown for the grade you get in a degree program to hinge on a single paper or presentation. This article aims to cover common mistakes (especially when you’re just starting out), and show you how to avoid them.

We want to reassure you that everyone can create a good university presentation, winning over both your fellow students and your professor!

From School to University

Many young people are inadequately prepared for creating and giving individual presentations during their school years. Presentations are generally given in groups, and students take turns presenting.

This means that students who’ve come from small-class environments are often hammered by stage fright when they suddenly have to give a university presentation alone and in front of a larger audience.

Add to this the fact that it’s rare to be taught how to use PowerPoint efficiently in school, and it’s obvious that many will have difficulty creating and giving an excellent university presentation. This leads to unnecessary stress. To avoid this, just read on!

Common Errors When Presenting

university presentation: Avoid these mistakes

It’s so important to realize that a presentation is more than just a set of slides . The way those slides are presented is also an essential part of creating a good university presentation .

Many students, particularly at the beginning of their studies, focus narrowly on the content of the slides, failing to understand that they’re just one aspect of a presentation.

One of the basics for giving a good presentation – one that both your professor and your fellow students can actually enjoy – is being able to speak fluently and confidently . This only comes naturally to a lucky few, though – the rest of us need to put in a lot of preparation, especially at the start of our studies. Don’t panic, though – we’ll show you just what to do, and what mistakes to avoid!

Mistake #1: Failure to practise

Presenting topics needs to be practised ! Most students spend hours perfecting the content of their university presentation, but give little or no thought to how they’re going to deliver it. If you rehearse properly, you can avoid unnecessary slip-ups and hangs while presenting, and learn how to get the timing right (not rushing, but not dragging). It’s no good going to all the trouble of creating a great presentation (or product!) if you can’t sell it as well!

Just reading your presentation out loud two or three times before you have to get up and speak in public will hugely reduce the chances of slipping up. (You also often notice more mistakes in the content when you speak than when you read, which you can then fix.) If you have a time limit to stick to, you’ll also be able to see if you need to shorten (or lengthen) your presentation.

If you have problems delivering your presentation smoothly, PowerPoint Presenter View can be really helpful. Find out how to use Speaker View to make your presentation easier here .

Do be aware, though, that depending on where you are presenting, you may not necessarily have a clear view of your laptop. Many college seminar rooms don’t have a lecture podium. Without your laptop directly in front of you, it’s difficult to use Speaker View.

Mistake #2: Making your slides the entire presentation

A really easy error to make is to put everything – all the relevant and interesting information you want to get across – on your slides. This means that your audience can quickly scan the info and then mentally switch off – you’re not adding any value.

To avoid this, while you’re preparing the presentation, think which parts you need to show on your slides, and which you can deliver while speaking , as part of the presentation. Core information and important figures should obviously be on the slides as well as in your talk, but otherwise your slides should underscore what you’re saying, rather than just repeating it.

Slides which include pictures or diagrams , without a lot of text, are particularly good for this. In general, it’s best to restrict what goes on your slides to core points and keywords , rather than writing in complete sentences.

Mistake #3: Not interacting with the audience

Many students focus so hard on the content of their university presentation that they forget the importance of actually interacting with the audience . This results in never-ending monologues and a bored audience!

Introducing interactive elements not only keeps your audience interested, but can get you kudos from your professor. Videos or interactive graphics, for example, help to lighten up the presentation, and questions encourage your fellow students to actively participate.

We’ve gone into how to do this well here and here .

Once you’ve finished speaking, a question-and-answer session is great for involving your audience. We would recommend, though, that you think this through properly and provide a structure for the discussion. Asking questions about personal experiences with the topic can help, for example – otherwise no one may speak up!

For more helpful tips on how to engage your audience and keep their attention, take a look here .

Mistake #4: Missing eye contact

Eye contact is a really important part of giving a good presentation. It signals that you’re actually interested in the audience and are addressing them directly.

However, it’s quite normal to get overtaken by nerves, especially as a freshman, meaning you stare fixedly at your slides or index cards, avoiding looking at your audience. Unfortunately, this can come across not only as being unsure of your subject, but as not actually caring what your audience thinks.

At the beginning of your university presentation, before starting to speak, pick someone in the audience who seems interested in the talk ( or just a friend!). Whenever you start to feel nervous, look at that person. Don’t just keep your focus there, though; let your gaze wander around the room.

Try dividing the audience mentally into four sections and letting your gaze rest on each section for about five seconds. This way, each section of the audience feels like they’re being directly addressed and paid attention to. For more tips and tricks on eye contact and body language, take a look at our blog here .

Mistake #5: Too much content and too long a presentation

University Presentation

Many students are afraid of missing out important content, so running the risk of crowding too much information into their presentation . Their presentations end up being overlong, often running over the time limit and boring the audience.

Less is more when it comes to presentations . Concentrate on the essentials and don’t get lost in the details. As we said above, a few test runs are absolutely necessary to find out how long your university presentation will actually take. You can then make any alterations needed, and feel confident about presenting it.

Mistake #6: Overloaded slides

Even though it’s a great idea to add some eye-catching effects, the same rule applies here: less is more . If your slides are too cluttered, your audience might get distracted, lose track, or switch off, rather than focus on your presentation.

The text on your slides should be limited to bullet points and keywords, as these are easier for your audience to digest. Choose a consistent color scheme and font and stick with it on all your slides. Too much color and changing fonts will distract your audience.

To learn how to get the most out of your PowerPoint presentation with fonts and colors, check out our blog here .

Using a master slide can be really helpful, too – it helps keep your layout neat and consistent. We go through how to create and properly use a master slide in this post.

Mistake #7: Getting caught out by the technical stuff

Technical problems have a nasty habit of cropping up just at the worst possible moment whatever you’re wanting to do, and giving a presentation is no exception! You can do your best to avoid them by doing a test run on site , if possible (or at least somewhere that’s not your own room, if not).

This means you can make sure you have everything you need sorted for your actual presentation, and know how the various pieces of equipment work.

It’s also a really good idea to have a plan B up your sleeve. Copy your presentation onto a spare USB stick, and you can use it on another laptop in case of emergency! Watch out for which version of PowerPoint is installed though, particularly with university laptops!

Different versions can cause headings or tables to shift and effects to disappear. You can get around this by saving your presentation as a PDF as well. This guarantees that your slides will look the same, but means any PowerPoint effects will be lost.

If you have time, do a test run on your alternative, so you can check if you need to make any adjustments.

Mistake #8: Poorly designed handouts

Extra tip: a handout can be the icing on the cake of a good presentation! To find out how to create a good handout and add that extra value, check out our blog here .

Also, check to see if your college provides students with design templates and style guides for presentations. This means you know that your slides will meet the requirements, and can save yourself some work!

To sum up: Practise makes perfect!

Practise good for your university presentation

Even if just the thought of giving your first university presentation is enough to send you into a flat spin, it doesn’t automatically mean that your presentation has to be a disaster! Armed with the above tips, you’ll be really well prepared to give an excellent university presentation, avoiding boring either fellow students or your professor! Good luck!

7.13 Missing an Assessed Group Presentation

If a student is absent for a reason not covered by the mitigation process, they are deemed to have failed the presentation component and a mark of zero should be returned for the assessment. Where it is possible to rearrange an assessment in an appropriate form (e.g. in the case of a performance), within two weeks, a capped mark (maximum 40%) will be given. If no alternative assessment is possible a mark of zero will be returned. Also note that an assessed presentation may count as a contact point for attendance monitoring and failure to attend will also be dealt with under the attendance monitoring procedures.

In cases where students are absent from assessed group presentations for reasons covered by the mitigation process (due to illness or other exceptional personal circumstances):

  • The member of staff concerned should ensure that the student submits mitigating evidence as per the standard procedures. Absence from an assessed group presentation is in effect absence from an exam.
  • Where possible, the member of staff should reschedule the presentation (this will not be feasible in many cases, but where it is, it is the best option).
  • Where (2) is not possible, the student should be asked to produce a script of what s/he would have said, including an explanation of how this fitted in with the rest of the group’s work, and fill in a coversheet. If feasible, the student should be asked to deliver an oral presentation of his/her contribution to the tutor. This presentation, together with supporting documentation, will be assessed by the tutor instead of a presentation to the class as a whole.

Where it seems that the remaining members of a group have been adversely affected in the presentation by the absence of a member of the group, staff must take this into account awarding a mark for the group as a whole.

Ole Miss investigates 'racist overtones' as Black student taunted at pro-Palestine protest

The student who was filmed making sounds and gestures that appeared to mimic a monkey toward a black student has also been removed from his fraternity..

missing a presentation at uni

Viral footage of a University of Mississippi student appearing to mimic a monkey toward a Black woman who was part of pro-Palestinian protests has resulted in the school launching a probe into his actions.

The university said in a letter than it has opened a student conduct investigation after the protesters were met last week by actions that appeared to convey “hostility and racist overtones." The student who was filmed making the sounds and gestures has also been removed from his fraternity, Phi Delta Theta General Headquarters said in a statement .

The viral moment, which stirred widespread outrage and condemnation, took place Thursday on the school’s campus amid a tense exchange between a group of pro-Palestinian protesters and a much larger group of counterprotesters.

Videos shared to social media show about 30 pro-Palestinian protesters were demonstrating in a barricaded zone when they were surrounded by an estimated 200 counterprotesters. Some of them held American flags or Donald Trump flags, while others can be seen dressed in red, white, and blue.

But one video in particular shows the moment when the counterprotester amid a group of mostly other young white men can be seen appearing to imitate a monkey as the Black woman records.

Videos showed student making monkey-like gestures at Black woman

The pro-Palestinian protesters had gathered Thursday at the university's quad, joining demonstrations that have been spreading to college campuses around the nation as the civilian death toll in Gaza continues to rise amid the Israeli-Hamas war that began Oct. 7 .

Several dozen students were peacefully evacuated from the University of Mississippi campus after more than 200 counter-protestors started to throw objects and shout at the protestors, the  Clarion Ledger , part of the USA TODAY Network, reported. About 50 to 60 protestors had gathered for a demonstration before the event escalated with counter-protestors outnumbering the pro-Palestinian protestors .

As videos proliferated online, one in particular showing a Black woman confronting a group of white male counterprotesters yelling at each other quickly went viral. In it, a man imitates the sounds and movements of a monkey toward the woman, while others in the crowd can be heard chanting, "Lock her up!"

Trump, other right-wing leaders praise counterprotesters

Many Republicans and conservatives took to social media to thank the crowd of counterprotesters for confronting the pro-Palestine protesters.

Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.)  shared video  of the confrontation last week on social media site X, saying it showed “Ole Miss taking care of business.”

Former President Donald Trump reposted a video of counter-protesters chanting on his official  Instagram  page along with the caption, “Thank you Ole Miss –– MAGA.”

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves initially came out with a  statement on X before the protests began stating that peaceful protests are a constitutional right "no matter how outrageous those protesters views may seem to some of us." He later shared a video on his account praising the counterprotesters, saying, "Warms my heart. I love Mississippi!”

University opens investigation amid outcry

In a letter to students and faculty the next day, university Chancellor Glenn F. Boyce said that the university has launched an investigation into one student after it became "aware that some statements made were offensive, hurtful, and unacceptable."

The university will determine whether more cases are warranted, Boyce added.

"Behaviors and comments that demean people because of their race or ethnicity marginalize them and undermine the values that are fundamental to a civil and safe society," he added in the letter, provided Monday to USA TODAY. "People who say horrible things to people because of who they are will not find shelter or comfort on this campus

"It is one reason why we do not take this lightly and cannot let the unacceptable behavior of a few speak for our institution or define us," Boyce concluded. "We are a community of scholars committed to creating an academic experience that respects the dignity of each individual."

Student in video removed from Phi Delta Theta frat

In a  statement on Saturday , the fraternity Phi Delta Theta said it removed a member from its Mississippi Alpha chapter at the school responsible for the "racist actions in the video," which it said are antithetical to its values.

Other student groups at the university also condemned the actions displayed in the viral video, along with the behavior of the counterprotesters as a whole.

“Yesterday, we observed a demonstration on our campus – a place for the expression of diverse viewpoints, protected by our constitutional First Amendment Rights,” the Ole Miss Associate Student Body said in a statement on Friday , which provided a list of resources available to students. “Yet, amidst this expression, unacceptable remarks were made that departed from our cherished values.”

The university's Black Student Union also released a statement expressing solidarity with the pro-Palestinian protesters, whom they described as "nonviolent demonstrators who were advocating for Palestine."

"The students were exercising their right under the First Amendment, while the counter-protesters were present with malicious intent as well as a prominent lack of knowledge on the situation at hand," the  statement shared on Instagram  said.

Because of her WNBA obligations, Caitlin Clark was unable to attend the University of Iowa graduation ceremony over the weekend. So, to make up for it, Clark's Indiana Fever teammates had a special surprise in store for the No. 1 overall pick.

The Fever presented Clark with a "Certificate of Graduation" prior to the start of practice. It was a pretty cool moment, and the Fever shared the special gesture in a video on X.

Clark is preparing to play in her first WNBA regular season game, which will be Tuesday night when the Fever travel to play the Connecticut Sun. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN 2.

Clark played in both preseason games for the Fever. She scored 21 points in her first outing, though the Fever dropped a 79-76 decision to the Dallas Wings. In the preseason finale, the former Hawkeye dropped 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists in an 83-80 victory over the Atlanta Dream.

Although she has a taste of what the WNBA will be like, Clark says her first regular season game in the league will be a little bit different .

"You know, preseason games you're trying to be as competitive as possible but you're still trying to figure it out, try different lineups,"  Clark said . "So, I feel now, getting out there for the first time will be really exciting and it will be super special."

It's been a wild two months for Clark, who was just competing in the national championship at Iowa in early April. Even though she didn't have the chance to go back to Iowa City to receive her degree, the Fever made sure they recognized her academic accomplishments.

For second straight night, Howard University parents left in tears over missing graduation

WASHINGTON (7News) — Howard University will reschedule the graduation ceremony for its nursing school after a chaotic scene erupted this Thursday.

A large crowd drew to watch the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences students graduate, however, the crowd grew upset and chanted “let us in” when they were denied entrance to the building.

Posts on social media show crying graduates and angry relatives and friends.

Inside the ceremony, the Dean of the Nursing School at one point said, “Because of the size of the room and because our relatives sometimes do not know how to act, the fire department is now here to shut us down.”

The ceremony was then canceled for the night.

However, a D.C. Fire & EMS spokesperson said on Friday that they did not shut the event down. They said they instead came to the scene because of a medical call. A witness told 7News someone had broken glass at Cramton Auditorium during the incident.

“At 6:42 p.m. we responded to the Cramton Auditorium for a medical call at the request of campus police. The patient was evaluated and refused transport and D.C. Fire and EMS departed,” wrote Noah Gray, the Chief Communications Officer for D.C. Fire and EMS.

The incident happened at the graduation ceremony for the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, which according to the Howard University website was supposed to go from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Cramton Auditorium on Thursday.

“Tickets will not be required, and seating will be allotted on a first-come, first-served basis,” the website for the Nursing graduation reads.

Howard University said the nursing graduation will be rescheduled for Saturday, which is also the day of Howard University’s main commencement ceremony for all graduates. The procession of the graduates is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Capital One Arena.

Howard University released the following statement Friday afternoon:

"Dear Howard University Community.

We are delighted to recognize the significant achievements of the Class of 2024-a historic moment in our University's history, celebrating over 2,800 graduates. This is a long-awaited moment for our students, many of whom missed their high school graduations, other celebrations, and began their academic journey in a virtual environment during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The outpouring of support from families and loved ones has been tremendous, resulting in capacity challenges at our campus venues. Along that vein, we apologize wholeheartedly for the challenges experienced during our College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (CNAHS) Honors and Awards Ceremony. The overcrowding at Cramton Auditorium significantly impacted the guest experience. To rectify this, we will formally recognize our College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences graduates at the Capital One Arena tomorrow, May 11, following our Commencement Convocation.

While we are unable to accommodate everyone who wishes to attend campus awards and recognition ceremonies in person, as every venue has a capacity limit, we invite guests to join the Commencement Ceremony via livestream on Howard University’s YouTube channel, on WHUR 96.3 FM or on HUT-TV, Howard University’s public broadcast channel. The ceremony will be rebroadcast at 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 12.

Looking forward, we are committed to implementing measures to better manage crowd capacity and enhance the graduation ceremony experience. Your understanding and patience during this time are greatly appreciated.

Despite the challenges, we must recognize the magnitude of this moment. Our higher retention rates have led to historic graduation rates and a phenomenal turnout. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our graduates on your remarkable achievements. Your hard work, dedication, and perseverance have culminated in this proud moment.

Congratulations to the Class of 2024! Your resilience and excellence are inspiring."

Although unlike Thursday evening the graduation was not canceled, on Friday evening several hundred people were left out in the rain after Cramton Auditorium reached capacity again. This time it was for graduates of the College of Engineering and Architecture, and again the ceremony was scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Employees shut the doors of the auditorium and left the crowd out in the cold with little communication until a man from the auditorium came out and said it had reached the capacity set by the fire marshal.

“We traveled so far to come here to stand in the rain, and can’t even get inside. Now you’re going to stand here and say ‘oh, it’s full to capacity.’ That’s not right,” said Shurland Layne, a father who was denied entrance.

“It’s very upsetting. I’m a single parent, I worked very hard to put her through this school just to not be able to see her walk,” said Chantell Fletcher, who said she had gotten up at 5:00 a.m. to drive from Long Island, New York, to see her daughter graduate.

Some parents questioned why the school didn’t issue tickets or use a larger venue such as Burr Gymnasium.

Howard University chief communications officer Lydia Sermons told 7 News running out of space for graduations of individual colleges had not been an issue in past years. She said this year’s graduating class is the largest in Howard University history, and that combined with many students not having a normal high school graduation in 2020 due to the pandemic has drawn huge crowds for graduations this year.

She pledged that the school would plan in the future to try to prevent a repeat of what has happened at some graduations this year.

iSchool researchers to present at ACM Web Conference

Members of Associate Professor Dong Wang's research group, the Social Sensing and Intelligence Lab, will present their research at the Web Conference 2024 , which will be held from May 13-17 in Singapore. The Web Conference is the premier venue to present and discuss progress in research, development, standards, and applications of topics related to the Web.

Teaching Assistant Professor Yang Zhang will present the paper, "SymLearn: A Symbiotic Crowd-AI Collective Learning Framework to Web-based Healthcare Policy Adherence Assessment." SymLearn is a novel framework that combines crowdsourcing and AI to assess public adherence to healthcare policies like mask-wearing during events like COVID-19. The key innovation is establishing a mutually beneficial relationship between crowd workers and AI models. While AI rapidly analyzes social media data, humans can fix AI errors, and AI can guide humans to subtle visual details. Insights from SymLearn highlight frontiers in human-AI collective intelligence systems.

PhD student Lanyu Shang will present the paper, "MMAdapt: A Knowledge-Guided Multi-Source Multi-Class Domain Adaptive Framework for Early Health Misinformation Detection." In this paper, Shang and her collaborators propose a novel AI framework called MMAdapt that can detect misinformation related to new and emerging health issues at an early stage. MMAdapt leverages resources from well-studied health domains like cancer and COVID-19 to identify misinformation in new emergent areas like the 2022 Mpox outbreak. It can discern not just false claims, but partially misleading content containing a mixture of accurate and inaccurate statements that can be even more convincing to the public. The researchers aim to enable timely interventions by platforms and agencies when new public health issues arise.

The primary research focus of the Social Sensing and Intelligence Lab lies in the emerging area of human-centered AI, AI for social good, and cyber-physical systems in social spaces. The lab develops interdisciplinary theories, techniques, and tools for fundamentally understanding, modeling, and evaluating human-centered computing and information (HCCI) systems, and for accurately reconstructing the correct "state of the world," both physical and social.

Campus Protests Actions of Police and Counterprotesters Under Scrutiny at U.C.L.A. and Ole Miss

  • Share full article

A crowd of protesters and a line of police officers stand facing each other near a building.

Here are the latest developments on the campus protests.

The actions of police officers and counterprotesters at campus demonstrations came under further scrutiny on Tuesday, with the University of California system saying it would investigate the law enforcement response to a violent attack on pro-Palestinian protesters at its Los Angeles campus, while the White House condemned the taunting of a Black student captured in a video at the University of Mississippi.

The developments came hours after police officers removed a pro-Palestinian encampment at the University of Chicago, an institution that has long been considered a model for free expression on campus . Demonstrators at U.S. campuses were galvanized Tuesday by an Israeli military incursion into Gaza’s southern end , thwarting administrators’ hopes of minimizing disruptions ahead of commencement events.

Videos taken last week captured a group of white male counterprotesters at the University of Mississippi taunting and jeering at a Black female student . One man appeared to hoot and make monkey gestures at her. “The behavior captured in that video is undignified, and it’s just racist, period,” said Karine Jean-Pierre, the first Black woman to serve as White House press secretary, during a press briefing on Tuesday.

Here’s what else to know:

Shortly before 5 a.m. local time, the University of Chicago’s police force arrived in riot helmets and began clearing tents . Protesters appeared to leave peacefully, but several dozen gathered on a nearby walkway and chanted in front of a line of officers who blocked the quad where the camp had been.

A police consulting firm will review a violent confrontation at U.C.L.A. a week ago, in which a group of counterprotesters attacked demonstrators at a pro-Palestinian encampment while security guards and police officers failed for several hours to intervene, said Michael V. Drake, president of the University of California system.

At the Rhode Island School of Design, activists staged a rally and occupied the school’s main administrative building on Monday evening, adding to the short list of schools where protesters have taken over buildings.

The authorities in Europe have also been confronting pro-Palestinian protests and encampments, including in Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Dublin and at several universities in England.

Arrests on Monday, including over 100 at universities in California, raised the total number of pro-Palestinian demonstrators detained on campuses to more than 2,500 at 50 schools since April 18, according to a New York Times tally .

Outside consultants will investigate the police response to an attack by counterprotesters at U.C.L.A.

A police consulting firm will review a violent confrontation at the University of California, Los Angeles a week ago, in which a group of counterprotesters attacked demonstrators at a pro-Palestinian encampment while security guards and police officers failed for several hours to intervene, and made no arrests.

Michael V. Drake, president of the University of California system, said a law enforcement consultant, 21st Century Policing Solutions, would investigate the incident in an effort to “resolve unanswered questions about U.C.L.A.’s planning and protocols,” as well as the response of other law enforcement agencies.

Several people were injured late on April 30, when a group of counterprotesters, many of whom wore pro-Israel slogans on their clothes and played Israeli music, descended on the pro-Palestinian encampment at U.C.L.A. They began pulling metal barriers away from the demonstrators, shot fireworks toward them and were captured on videos punching, kicking and attacking people, sometimes with objects including sticks, traffic cones and wooden boards.

The attacks continued for more than two hours before the Los Angeles Police Department responded to the scene with the California Highway Patrol. It was unclear why the campus police force had not stepped in before then, or why it took so long for officers from the larger local and state units to arrive on the scene.

Even then, the police did not get between the encampment and the counterprotesters until nearly 3 a.m., about four hours after the violence had begun.

Earlier this week, Gene D. Block, U.C.L.A.’s chancellor, created a new campus safety office that reports directly to him, and hired Rick Braziel, a former police chief in Sacramento, Calif., to lead it. Mr. Braziel will lead a separate investigation into the violence perpetrated by the counterprotesters, and the L.A.P.D. has assigned a detective to assist, Chancellor Block said.

The consulting firm’s review of the police response, meanwhile, will be led by a team including Charles Ramsey, who led police departments in Philadelphia and Washington before founding the consulting group. The firm has worked with several local governments, as well as universities including Harvard and the University of Oregon .

Mr. Drake said the university system’s 10 campuses “must be places where our community members can safely engage in the University of California’s mission of teaching, research and public service.” The independent review, he said, would “provide us with more information to shore up our ability to protect our community members and their rights while keeping them safe from harm.”

— Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs Reporting from Los Angeles

The White House condemns the taunting of a Black student at Ole Miss.

The White House on Tuesday condemned the actions of counterprotesters at the University of Mississippi, after videos captured last week showed a crowd of white male students taunting and jeering at a female Black student at a pro-Palestinian protest.

Video clips published by the Mississippi Free Press and The Daily Mississippian showed some of the men, who had gathered to counter a pro-Palestinian protest on the school’s campus in Oxford, Miss., directing derogatory, racist and profane remarks at the Black student. One man appeared to hoot and make monkey gestures at her.

“The behavior captured in that video is undignified, and it’s just racist, period,” said Karine Jean-Pierre, the first Black woman to serve as White House press secretary, during a press briefing on Tuesday.

“It is beneath anyone — anyone — to be sharing that kind of material,” she added. “The actions in the video are beneath any American, and so it is insulting to everyone who has to view it.”

At least one student now faces a conduct investigation at the university, Glenn F. Boyce, the school chancellor, said on Friday. He did not identify the student, citing privacy laws, and did not rule out the possibility of more investigations.

“Some statements made were offensive, hurtful and unacceptable, including actions that conveyed hostility and racist overtones,” he wrote in a letter to campus. He added, “People who say horrible things to people because of who they are will not find shelter or comfort on this campus.”

On Sunday, the headquarters of Phi Delta Theta fraternity said it had removed one person from its membership , adding that the “racist actions” shown in the video clip were “those of an individual and are antithetical to the values of Phi Delta Theta and the Mississippi Alpha chapter.” The fraternity also did not identify the student.

While other videos showing the counterprotesters loudly singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” were celebrated online, the videos of the taunts have been widely condemned.

Representative Mike Collins, Republican of Georgia, captioned a post with the video of the taunting as “Ole Miss taking care of business.” He later clarified in a statement that “if that person is found to have treated another human being improperly because of their race, they should be punished appropriately, and will hopefully seek forgiveness.

“Frankly, I did not believe that to be the focal point of the video shared at the time,” he said. “But I recognize that there certainly seems to be some potentially inappropriate behavior that none of us should seek to glorify.”

Speaker Mike Johnson says U.S. universities are ‘hostile’ to Jews.

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday compared the protests unfolding on American university campuses to what happened at institutions of higher learning in Germany before World War II.

It was the “same elite centers of learning” from which “Jewish faculty and students were suddenly expelled” in Germany, Mr. Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, said in pointed remarks at a Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony at the Capitol. Today, he said, American universities have become “hostile places for Jewish students and faculty.”

“The very campuses which were once the envy of the international academy have succumbed to an antisemitic virus,” he added. “Students who were known for producing academic papers are now known for stabbing their Jewish peers in the eyes with Palestinian flags.”

By the turn of the 20th century, Germany was a thriving democracy. They were on the cutting edge of technology. They had a strong economy. They were highly educated. But that did not stop evil and darkness from overtaking that country. German universities, like those at Strasbourg, were at the heart of renaissance and intellectual life. But it was at those same elite centers of learning where Jewish faculty and students were suddenly expelled, where anti-Jewish courses were introduced and where professors performed horrific pseudoscience experiments on Jewish people brought from nearby concentration camps. We remember what happened then. And now today, we are witnessing American universities quickly becoming hostile places for Jewish students and faculty. The very campuses which were once the envy of the international academy have succumbed to an antisemitic virus.

Video player loading

Mr. Johnson was speaking at the ceremony ahead of President Biden, who also condemned some of the hateful rhetoric and property damage that have occurred as pro-Palestinian protests have swept U.S. college campuses in recent weeks. “To the Jewish community, let me say, I see your hurt and your fear and your pain,” Mr. Biden said.

Mr. Johnson has made the pro-Palestinian protests a main focus since passing a bill to send $60 billion of aid to Ukraine, a move that enraged his right flank. The unrest at universities has offered him a new issue to spotlight, as he seeks a political edge on an issue that divides Democrats.

He visited Columbia University last month, where he called on Mr. Biden to take action to quell the protests , including potentially sending in the National Guard. He announced more congressional hearings with top university administrators. And he brought to the floor the Antisemitism Awareness Act, which would crackdown on antisemitism on campuses — a bill that ended up prompting bizarre backlash from some on the far right.

On Tuesday, Mr. Johnson described in graphic detail the horror of Oct. 7, when Hamas launched an attack against defenseless Israeli citizens, comparing them to lasting images from the Holocaust.

“We have to do all that we can to ensure that evil does not prevail,” he said. “This is a time for all to come together.”

— Annie Karni Reporting from Washington

The University of Chicago initially took a permissive stance, but removed the camp on Tuesday.

When pro-Palestinian protesters put up tents on a University of Chicago quad early last week, administrators initially took a permissive view.

But that changed on Friday when the university’s president, Paul Alivisatos, wrote a letter saying that demonstrators had violated policies and that the encampment “cannot continue.” Four days later, on Tuesday morning, the university police moved in before sunrise to forcibly disperse the camp.

“The university remains a place where dissenting voices have many avenues to express themselves, but we cannot enable an environment where the expression of some dominates and disrupts the healthy functioning of the community for the rest,” Dr. Alivisatos wrote on Tuesday.

The encampment at the University of Chicago, a highly selective private institution, was among dozens across the country that have tested campus leaders and posed thorny questions about the balance between free speech and safety. But the Chicago camp took on added significance because the university is the home of the Chicago statement, a set of free speech standards adopted in 2015 that has become a touchstone and guide for colleges across the country.

Protesters had been bracing for a police raid since Friday, and had increasingly fortified the area surrounding dozens of tents. But over the weekend and through Monday, the university had said little about what it would do next, and police officers had kept a distance from the tents.

That changed early on Tuesday. Jessica Darrow, a member of the social work faculty, said that several of her colleagues had been at the encampment until after 3 a.m. in anticipation that the police would try to clear it. But with no sign of police movement, she said, most of them went home and most students went to bed.

After 4 a.m., Dr. Darrow said, she saw two vehicles with bright headlights pull onto the quad. Soon, she said, more vehicles arrived and University of Chicago police officers in riot gear exited and started tearing down barricades.

“They started very, very quickly ripping and throwing the barricades that were protecting the camp,” Dr. Darrow said. “They started destroying the tents and throwing them. They were both yelling over bull horns and also just yelling very loudly that everyone needed to get out.”

Protesters were told to leave immediately, Dr. Darrow said, and they complied. She said she did not witness any physical contact between protesters and officers while the camp was being cleared. A student protester, Kelly Hui, said she was pushed by a police officer and witnessed contact between other officers and protesters. Demonstrators have been asking the university to disclose its investments in weapons manufacturers and divest from companies involved in Israel’s war effort.

Ms. Hui said the crowd in the camp had waned early Tuesday, and some protesters had gone home, when she heard screams shortly after settling into her tent.

“It really seems like the university was waiting for us to disperse when we were at our most vulnerable,” she said.

Dr. Alivisatos wrote that there had been no arrests.

“The overnight action, done when fewer protesters were in the encampment, was a collaborative effort carefully planned to minimize the need for arrests and reduce the impact on others in our campus and in nearby neighborhood,” Michele Rasmussen, the dean of students, and Eric M. Heath, the associate vice president for safety and security, wrote on Tuesday.

The Chicago Police Department did not participate in clearing the encampment, city and university officials said, though the university said it had sought assistance from the city’s force. Gerald McSwiggan, a University of Chicago spokesman, said in a statement that the university police “made the Chicago Police Department aware of our operation well in advance. We requested their support, however, they declined.”

A statement issued Tuesday morning by the office of Mayor Brandon Johnson said the mayor and senior staff “reached out to University of Chicago leadership to reiterate serious safety and operational concerns about this plan — a message conveyed to U.C.P.D. multiple times by the Chicago Police Department.” Mr. Johnson’s office did not specify what those concerns were.

Mr. Johnson, a Democrat who is a former union organizer, took office a year ago and has spoken about his own participation in past demonstrations. Last week, Mr. Johnson issued a statement saying he had been in touch with Dr. Alivisatos and had “made clear my commitment to free speech and safety on college campuses.”

The University of Chicago Police Department, which has about 100 sworn officers, led the removal of protesters. Members of the Cook County Sheriff’s Police assisted with traffic control nearby, but a spokeswoman for that agency said they had no role in clearing the camp.

Although the camp was cleared, protesters continued on Tuesday morning near an entrance to the quad. As a group of several dozen protesters chanted “free Palestine” on a sidewalk, workers were visible through a nearby walkway going through the encampment and placing signs and other items into the beds of white pickup trucks. Police officers with helmets stood beneath the walkway.

“It’s hard to see this happen to people who believe that they actually can make a change, and to see in their eyes how exhausted and sad and angry they are,” said Dr. Darrow.

The University of Chicago, which has about 18,000 students, including around 7,600 undergraduates, has been praised by conservatives and free speech advocates in recent years for its approach to expression on its campus. As part of its free speech philosophy, the university also put forward the principle of institutional neutrality.

In a 1967 declaration , the university called for schools to remain neutral on political and social matters, saying that a campus “is the home and sponsor of critics; it is not itself the critic.” But at other colleges over the years, students have frequently and successfully pressed their administrations to take positions on matters like police brutality and global warming.

In August 2016, the University of Chicago informed incoming first-year students : “We do not support so-called trigger warnings, we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual safe spaces where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own.”

Versions of the university’s declaration of free speech principles have been adopted by dozens of other colleges in recent years.

“In a word, the university’s fundamental commitment is to the principle that debate or deliberation may not be suppressed because the ideas put forth are thought by some or even by most members of the university community to be offensive, unwise, immoral or wrong-headed,” the 2015 declaration said.

But the statement also describes clear limits, including a right to prohibit illegal activities and speech “that constitutes a genuine threat or harassment.”

Eman Abdelhadi, a faculty member who helped protesters negotiate with administrators, said the university’s approach to the encampment showed that its free speech “principles are a sham.” Still, she predicted, campus activism would continue.

“Whether it’s in the next few weeks or in the fall, the movement is not going anywhere,” said Dr. Abdelhadi, a sociologist. “It’s just a matter of time before the next wave of major protests and action.”

Around 8 a.m. local time on Tuesday, more than three hours after police moved in, officials reopened the quad and protesters returned to where they had camped.

The tents and signs were gone, and imprints in the grass where tents had been staked were the only remnants. Many protesters chanted “from the river to the sea” and “intifada” when they returned to the quad. Police officers wearing helmets and holding shields stood nearby but did not intervene.

Police in Europe are arresting pro-Palestinian protesters and clearing encampments.

missing a presentation at uni

In countries across Europe, students have staged their own pro-Palestinian sit-ins and protests on the lawns of their universities. And in several instances, the authorities are taking a similar approach to their U.S. counterparts: shutting them down.

At the University of Amsterdam on Tuesday, the police arrested about 125 students who had fortified their protest camp with wooden barricades . And in Berlin, the German police cleared a similar encampment at the city’s Free University, which included several hundred pro-Palestinian protesters . Both demonstrations had begun on Monday, days after mass arrests swept through protests at U.S. campuses.

In Amsterdam, university officials said the demonstration had begun peacefully, but devolved into “an unsafe and grim situation” overnight, when fireworks were launched, physical attacks took place and an Israeli flag was burned. The city’s public prosecutor and mayor made the decision to deploy the police, university executives said in a statement . “We deeply regret that it had to turn out this way,” they said.

Many demands coming out of European universities reflect common cause with protesting students in the United States. Among them: for universities to disclose their investment streams and divest from those that support Israel in its war against Hamas in Gaza.

Tent cities, similar to those in America, have appeared in Britain at Oxford and Cambridge Universities , where protesters have declared “liberated zones” on campus; demonstrations have also been held in Bristol, Leeds and Manchester. At France’s Sciences Po, one of the country’s most elite universities, students occupied a campus building last week and refused to leave . Dozens of them were removed by the police on Friday.

In Ireland, at Trinity College, Dublin , a student encampment prompted the university to close its popular exhibition on the Book of Kells, the medieval illuminated gospel manuscript that is one of the most famous works of its kind, on the eve of a busy tourist season. After talks with student protesters this week, Trinity officials said they would begin the process of divesting from certain companies that operate in the “Occupied Palestinian Territory.”

U.C. Santa Cruz protesters want the school to cut ties with Hillel.

As Pro-Palestinian protesters continue to issue long lists of demands to university administrators, one stipulation at the University of California, Santa Cruz, has drawn notice.

Students for Justice in Palestine UCSC demanded last week that university leaders cut ties with Hillel International and three other Jewish organizations as part of a call to “cut ties with all zionist institutions.”

Hillel operates chapters at 850 colleges and universities in the United States and abroad, and bills itself as “the world’s largest and most inclusive Jewish campus organization.”

It serves as a meeting place for Jewish students and a place to celebrate Jewish holidays and learn about the culture, and offers resources for reporting antisemitism and accessing mental health support.

Hillel International “is steadfastly committed to the support of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state with secure and recognized borders as a member of the family of nations,” according to its website . However, the group has encouraged local chapters to create their own guidelines that “reflect the local environment.”

Becka Ross, executive director of Santa Cruz Hillel, said the organization was “the proud home away from home for hundreds of Jewish students at U.C. Santa Cruz.” Nearly 6 percent of students there are Jewish, according to Hillel International.

“It is deeply antisemitic to call for the university to cut ties with our organization, along with other Jewish communal organizations that students depend on,” she said in an email.

Students for Justice in Palestine UCSC did not return a request for comment.

The school’s chancellor, Cynthia Larive, issued a statement on Sunday reaffirming the university’s commitment to Hillel.

“Hillel has long been an important part of our campus’s interfaith council and we value and intend to continue this relationship,” Chancellor Larive said.

Protesters occupy part of a building at Rhode Island School of Design.

Pro-Palestinian protesters barricaded themselves inside the main administrative building at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, R.I., on Monday night, protest organizers said. The school said its president and provost were meeting with the demonstrators.

Twenty-four protesters, including students at the private art and design school, began a sit-in inside the building on Monday morning, according to a statement from the organizers, RISD Students for Justice in Palestine. Just before 7 p.m., they occupied the second floor of the building and set up barricades, the statement said.

A livestream by the organizers showed protesters gathered in a corridor on the second floor of the building, chanting “Free, free Palestine,” as security guards inside a room appeared to prevent them from entering it. Videos showed other protesters gathered outside the building.

The developments escalated a protest that has been held outside the building, 20 Washington Place, since last Wednesday, and added to the short list of school buildings that have been occupied by activists protesting Israel’s war in Gaza. Last week, police officers ended occupations of buildings at Columbia University and Cal Poly Humboldt, clearing the buildings and arresting dozens of people.

The building at 20 Washington Place contains the offices of the Rhode Island school’s top officials and its administrative and financial services.

The school’s president, Crystal Williams, and its provost, Touba Ghadessi, were at the building meeting with students involved in the protest, Jaime Marland, R.I.S.D.’s senior director of public relations, said in an email at about 10 p.m. “We have and continue to affirm our students’ right to freedom of expression, freedom of speech, and peaceful assembly,” she added.

The protesters’ demands included that the school divest from investments that benefit Israel and that the school’s president “publicly condemns the Israeli occupation of Gaza as a genocide,” the organizers’ statement said.

The protesters declared that they had renamed the building Fathi Ghaben Place, after a Palestinian artist who died in Gaza in February. Palestinian officials have said that Mr. Ghaben was not allowed to leave Gaza to seek medical care.

A Providence Police Department spokesman said that the school had not requested police assistance, although the police were “aware of the protest.”

Lucky man plans to buy golf clubs with lottery scratch-off win

CALABASH, N.C. ( WECT /Gray News) – A man in North Carolina scored an early birthday present after scratching off a winning lottery ticket.

Jack Romans Jr. bought a lucky $2,000,000 Diamond Deluxe ticket from an RM Mart in Sunset Beach.

As he scratched the ticket, he learned he had won $100,000.

“I guess I was just in the right place at the right time,” Romans said. “It’s my birthday in a week. This is a nice early birthday present.”

After the required federal and state tax withholdings, Romans took home a total of $71,506.

“I’m going to get a new set of irons,” he said, adding he also plans to use some of the winnings to pay off some bills.

Dozens of Duke students walk out ahead of Jerry Seinfeld's commencement speech

WTVD logo

DURHAM, N.C. -- Sunday was a big day for students like Victor.

"It's something that like it's been like a dream for me come true," he said.

Uwe is from Nigeria and is now graduating with his master's degree at Duke University with his son watching him walk.

"You know, when he sees his dad coming to Duke University, graduating from Duke University, he's going to feel empowered... He's going to feel energetic, you know, to do the same," he said.

Romina Sequeira said she also felt the weight of the moment walking as a first-generation college student.

"It's an accomplishment for my whole family and also for this class because everyone works really hard. So congratulations to Duke students," she said.

The commencement speaker, Jerry Seinfeld, brought mixed reactions as he took the podium. A few dozen students walked out of the ceremony, some carrying Palestinian flags while chanting "Free Palestine" that were later replaced with "Jerry, Jerry" chants from the crowd. Seinfeld has been vocal about his support for Israel.

As you might expect from the famed comedian, his speech was filled with jokes.

"You went to Duke, that is an unbelievable privilege. I now have an honorary doctorate, a humane letters degree from Duke University, and if I can figure out a way to use that, I will," Seinfeld said adding a piece of advice to graduates.

"Find something where you love the good parts and don't mind the bad parts too much. The torture you're comfortable with, this is the golden path to victory in life."

Ultimately, Seinfeld told students to work hard and keep their humor as they enter the next chapter of their lives.
