Research Nurse II, Equitable Breakthroughs in Medicine Development (EQBMED) Clinical Research

  • Applies knowledge in contributing to Good Clinical Practice ( GCP ) and/or other regulatory activities.
  • Under PI’s direction, supervises and assists with the preparation and submission of all IRB and Regulatory Documents to obtain final approval and may draft various communications with Sponsor.
  • Attends and participates in the Investigator meeting.
  • Reviews goals and requirements of any new protocols and coordinates study initiation.
  • Coordinates the process of clinical research.
  • Recruits, screens, enroll, and evaluate patients who participate in study.
  • Conducts studies according to protocol and completes case report forms.
  • Educates subjects on the details of the studies and ensures that clinical studies are conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the FDA and other regulating agencies.
  • Obtains vital signs and performs phlebotomy; monitors participants labs; maintains temperature and QC logs per protocol compliance.
  • Serve as liaison between patients, PI, sponsors, and other health professionals and communicates information concerning patient needs and/or changes.
  • Develops the clinical trial agreement.
  • Answers IRB stipulations to obtain final approval; documents IRB approval and contract approval.
  • Plans and designs of source documents for protocol; coordinates study initiation;
  • Organizes, facilitates, and obtains Informed Consent from study participant and documents appropriately.

  • Performs competent physical, pathophysiological, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, learning needs, and/or age-appropriate nursing assessment of participants.
  • Serves as a resource to staff Provides performance management for staff.
  • Precepts new clinical research staff and educates research staff.
  • Identifies areas of health promotion and patient and family educational needs regarding treatment and follow-up on specific clinical research.
  • Completes accurate and concise documentation on all participant records in addition to other source documentation and forms per protocol including maintaining drug documentation.
  • Identifies relevant data from internal and external sources and develops and maintains productive working relationship with study monitor.
  • Ensures return of test article / clinical supplies; reconciles study drug accountability; assists in processing and shipping lab specimens efficiently and cost effectively; maintains supply inventory and equipment.
  • Adheres to internal controls established for the department.
  • Elicits relevant data from sources outside of the hospital.
  • Assists PI in budget development; may monitor ledgers.
  • Performs administrative/clinical functions under direction of PI and other related duties as required.
  • Demonstrated skills in computer software applications (e.g., Microsoft outlook, Teams, office 365).
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Detail oriented, Problem-solving, decision-making, multitasking and time management.
  • Excellent communication, both verbal and written, with strong public speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in effective conflict management and resolution.

  • Able to work in a team and produce quality output under tight deadlines.
  • Minimum two years of professional nursing experience in direct patient care or research in approved specialty area.
  • Bilingual e.g.: Spanish, Asian dialects, etc. preferred.
  • Routine office environment, Sitting or standing in one location much of the time.

Duke Health's Inpatient Research Center seeks to hire a  Clinical Nurse PRN  who will embrace our mission of  Advancing Health Together!

Clinic 3N oversees the management of participants who have agreed to be a part of a research protocol.  The protocols vary and include pediatric to adult participants and visits range from same day appointments to multiple overnight stays.  While designated a clinic, there is a requirement for occasional night and weekend shifts to cover the needs of these protocols.

  • Plan, provide and document professional nursing care in clinic, utilizing the nursing process, in accordance with physician orders, research protocols and established policies and procedures, under the supervision of the nurse manager, charge nurse or practice manager.
  • Collect participant data in accordance with research protocols, evaluate nursing care provided, document and communicate appropriately nursing actions taken and participant responses.
  • Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
  • Assist other nursing personnel in the delivery of participant care and serves as team leader.
  • Monitor and initiate corrective action to maintain the environment of care, including equipment and material resources.
  • Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings.
  • Support the development of other staff and formal learners.
  • Participate in the identification of clinical, operational and safety related performance improvement opportunities.
  • Ability to complete research protocol specific training in a timely manner
  • Participate in clinic or entity level performance improvement activities.
  • Perform other related duties in practical nurse and all unlicensed assistive personnel
  • Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process
  • Knowledge of professional theory, practice and procedures
  • Ability to teach research participants and families in accordance with the research protocols
  • Ability to record activities, document assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation and re-evaluation of patient status
  • Ability to navigate the entity to provide protocol driven care to research participants and to support clinical care should it be needed

Schedule:  Flexible - Day/ Night Rotation with weekend schedules as needed.

Shift Options - 8-12 hours OR 20+ Hours/Week

Minimum Requirements

  • Must have an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma. (All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date.)
  • Must have current or compact RN license in the State of North Carolina
  • 1+ years of previous clinical nurse experience is preferred
  • BCLS certification is required.
  • Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing Required

Duke Health's Inpatient Research Center seeks to hire a  Clinical Nurse PRN  who will embrace our mission of  Advancing Health Together!

Clinic 3N oversees the management of participants who have agreed to be a part of a research protocol.  The protocols vary and include pediatric to adult participants and visits range from same day appointments to multiple overnight stays.  While designated a clinic, there is a requirement for occasional night and weekend shifts to cover the needs of these protocols.

  • Plan, provide and document professional nursing care in clinic, utilizing the nursing process, in accordance with physician orders, research protocols and established policies and procedures, under the supervision of the nurse manager, charge nurse or practice manager.
  • Collect participant data in accordance with research protocols, evaluate nursing care provided, document and communicate appropriately nursing actions taken and participant responses.
  • Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
  • Assist other nursing personnel in the delivery of participant care and serves as team leader.
  • Monitor and initiate corrective action to maintain the environment of care, including equipment and material resources.
  • Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings.
  • Support the development of other staff and formal learners.
  • Participate in the identification of clinical, operational and safety related performance improvement opportunities.
  • Ability to complete research protocol specific training in a timely manner
  • Participate in clinic or entity level performance improvement activities.
  • Perform other related duties in practical nurse and all unlicensed assistive personnel
  • Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process
  • Knowledge of professional theory, practice and procedures
  • Ability to teach research participants and families in accordance with the research protocols
  • Ability to record activities, document assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation and re-evaluation of patient status
  • Ability to navigate the entity to provide protocol driven care to research participants and to support clinical care should it be needed

Schedule:  Flexible - Day/ Night Rotation with weekend schedules as needed.

Shift Options - 8-12 hours OR 20+ Hours/Week

Minimum Requirements

  • Must have an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma. (All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date.)
  • Must have current or compact RN license in the State of North Carolina
  • 1+ years of previous clinical nurse experience is preferred
  • BCLS certification is required.
  • Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing Required

This position is a limited position with the possibility of extension/career conversion.

This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite on Campus and remote.

DESCRIPTION

The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the School of Medicine with approximately 250 Faculty, 127 postdoctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) along with over 320 support staff (not including hospital staff). In addition, the Department has 68 clinical residents distributed across the Divisions. The missions of research, education and patient care are intertwined, and are integral to the goals of the department.

The Department manages a university-affiliated children's health system with the physicians and leadership of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Rady Children's Hospital, and Rady Children's Specialists of San Diego, a Medical Practice Foundation, unifying pediatric patient care, research, education and community service programs.

The Pediatric Immunization Advancement Laboratory focuses on maternal and infant vaccinations, optimizing vaccination strategies in the community setting, and improving vaccine immunity. Our global research evaluates infant immune development, responses to mucosal vaccination, and the influence of breast milk and gut microbes on immune responses. Research starts at the bed side, is taken to the bench, and then back to bed side and community. Our goal is to find strategies to improve vaccine effectiveness and protect vulnerable infants and children from infectious diseases worldwide.

Under general supervision, Research Nurse will be responsible for running COVID-19, Influenza, RSV and other vaccine research protocols. Responsibilities vary by study and may include screening potential study participants, providing informed consent, administering vaccine, following subjects in longitudinal study protocols for routine and illness visits, medical record review, having telephone contact with participants, blood draws, nasal or nasopharyngeal swabs, other specimen collection, physical exam, completing case report forms; research scheduling; interact with research team, the UCSD Human Subjects Protection Program, and study sponsors, and other research related entities as needed.

While not required, a cover letter is highly recommended when applying to this position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing and six months of clinical experience.

BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within 6 months of hire date.

A minimum of two (2) years experience in pediatrics, preferably in emergency room, inpatient, NICU, or ICU setting.

Must have excellent phlebotomy, IV insertion skills with experience in pediatrics.

Experience and ability to accurately collect, record, transcribe, and synthesize clinical data.

Demonstrated experience providing a wide variety of patient care activities including patient assessment, triage, obtaining a detailed medical history and vital signs, explaining medical conditions and procedures, reviewing medications and providing health education to clients, and coordinating care with clinical medical staff.

Knowledge regarding the standard pre-test or pre-procedure instructions that patients should receive.

Knowledge of the name, abbreviation, and purpose of various diagnostic tests/procedures, including proper scheduling and completion of necessary requisitions and consents.

Demonstrated experience interacting positively, constructively, and effectively with staff, physicians, patients, and the general public.

Excellent organizational skills with the ability to effectively and efficiently coordinate clinical and data activities for the enrollment and retention of patients on clinical trials.

Experience maintaining patient confidentiality and communicating (verbally and written) with patients, staff, and physicians with professionalism, sensitivity, and discretion.

Proficient at word processing, spreadsheet, and E-mail with experience producing reports, profiles, correspondence, graphs, and spreadsheets to generate and track required data.

Experience working independently and prioritizing tasks to meet strict guidelines and deadlines.

Experience performing effectively under conditions of high workload and frequent interruptions.

Ability to draw blood, start IV lines, and administer vaccines via all routes.

Must have reliable transportation and willing to perform home visits.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated experience with clinical research activities and guidelines related to consent, ethical conduct and protection of human subjects.

Demonstrated experience in operation and coordination of clinical trials or studies.

Experience reading and interpreting clinical research protocols and research policies and procedures.

Experience in providing care to a broad range patients.

Knowledge of and ability to communicate and ensure compliance of current UCSD Medical Center and Research policies and procedures. Knowledge of UCSD Medical Center, JCAHO, and Title XXII hospital licensing regulations.

Intermediate skills in using quality assessment and quality improvement methods.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

Current State of California Registered Nurse (RN) license.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $123,902 - $173,659 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $59.34 - $83.17

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).

This 16-month program allows students to work alongside professionals during clinical experiences in both classroom settings and within prestigious healthcare centers. The intensive curriculum covers nursing theory, clinical skills, pharmacology, and other essential nursing knowledge areas. Upon completion of this program, learners are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). 

Family Nurse Practitioner Bridge Program - (RN to MSN)

Through the Family Nurse Practitioner Bridge Program - (RN to MSN) , students can build on their associate’s degree without needing a bachelor’s degree in nursing. This allows a smooth transition from undergraduate to graduate-level coursework. The three-year, part-time program offers clinical experience as students expand their collegiate nursing education. They widen their understanding of the professional nursing industry and move from the bridge program into the MSN-FNP portion of their study, ultimately allowing them to sit for the Family Nurse Practitioner Board Certification Exam upon completion. 

Master and Doctoral Nursing School Programs

Master of science in nursing - family nurse practitioner.

A Master of Science in Nursing - Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program is a 24-month, part-time course of study that provides students the flexibility to work while earning a nursing diploma. Like the Bachelor of Science in Nursing - Postbaccalaureate program, the Master of Science in Nursing - FNP path offers students the opportunity to advance their bachelor’s degree with a specialty in family nursing. Students become advanced practice registered nurses who are trained to provide comprehensive healthcare services to individuals and families across a range of ages. From delivering primary patient care services to diagnosing and treating a variety of health care concerns, nursing students learn more about what it takes to become an FNP. 

Master of Science in Nursing - Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

A Master of Science in Nursing - Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) program allows learners to achieve a specialty in psychiatric mental health in just 24 months. This part-time, online program helps nursing students build a firm, foundational knowledge of dementia, depression, anxiety, and other psychiatric conditions. Students also dive into the doctor-patient relationship and learn about counseling best practices. After two years, learners are eligible to sit for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification. 

Doctor of Nursing Practice

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is a program that helps students earn an advanced degree in the hopes of achieving the highest level in the nursing profession. This 24-month, online doctoral program focuses on organization and systems leadership. Those who wish to enter this program must hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree, which will give them the foundational knowledge necessary to excel in this course of study.
