Responsibilities of the graduate Research Assistants must involve active research of some form, regardless of whether the research is the assistant’s own. This can involve employment for regular fieldwork, lab work, library research, data analysis, writing, curating of exhibitions, or any other activity that can be counted as research. Research Assistants are not significantly involved with teaching or primarily devoted to administrative functions, such as working as filing or reception.

The duties of Research Assistants vary considerably, but may include:

  • Searching for and reviewing published literature on a research topic
  • Helping to develop a project methodology
  • Assisting with lab work
  • Taking notes
  • Attending team or project meetings
  • Assisting in developing resources for project management
  • Collecting data
  • Entering and analyzing data
  • Supervising undergraduate research assistants or other personnel on research-related tasks

  • Corresponding with funding agencies

In all cases, the exact responsibilities of the Research Assistant depend on the nature of the work and assignments made by the supervisor. Work assignments should not include personal assistance to the supervisor or others, such as running personal errands for the supervisor’s family. Become a member of our research team.

Thank you for your interest in available research assistantships in our lab. As a research assistant, you will learn about the nuts and bolts of doing psychological research in a warm and friendly work environment.

What Will I Do?

As a research assistant, you will be given the opportunity to work closely with other members of the laboratory (including undergraduate and graduate students, visiting scholars, and Professor Tsai) on one or more of our current research projects. Your responsibilities may include: collecting and managing data; transcribing and coding; doing library research; designing studies; maintaining lab equipment; running subjects; preparing stimuli and instruments for projects; screening potential study participants over the phone; and contacting recruitment sites. In addition to the work that research assistants do on specific research projects, they are also required to contribute to the maintenance of the lab (e.g., entry of information into FileMaker Pro, cleaning, copying articles, filing, answering phones, maintaining the web site) and to attend a weekly lab meeting. During these meetings, we: take care of administrative tasks; talk about conceptual and methodological issues related to cultural psychology and research on emotion; check-in about various projects; listen to and provide feedback on papers and presentations; and train research assistants on various research methods. Research assistants are expected to attend and stay for the entire meeting. Because of the extensive training involved in becoming a research assistant, we request a minimum of a six-hour commitment a week (not including the weekly lab meeting), for at least two quarters. We find that research assistants who are the most satisfied with their experience in our lab are the ones who have the most time to become involved in our projects.

What Qualifications Do I Need?

We are looking for research assistants with a range of experiences and qualifications. You do NOT need to be a Stanford student; however, you should have an interest in psychological science and an interest in pursuing graduate studies in psychology. You do NOT need to have previous research experience; however, research assistants will start with responsibilities and duties that match their previous experiences in research. You should be intellectually curious, diligent, and conscientious; be interested in culture and emotion; work well with others; and be able to make the requisite time commitment. Because we use multiple methods in our research, we are also looking for research assistants who have training in computer programming, who speak different languages, and who have backgrounds in anthropology, physiology, or biology.

Will I Be Paid or Receive Course Credit?

Currently, all of our research assistant positions for non-Stanford students are voluntary and, therefore, are not paid. Stanford undergraduate and graduate students may register for course credit (1 credit for 3 hours of work per week) or work for work-study (if eligible) at a rate of $12/hr.

Program Overview

The Work-Study Research Assistant Program (WSRAP) provides undergraduate students who have a federal work-study award with an opportunity to develop research skills and explore their academic interests by working as a research assistant under the supervision of a faculty mentor. These meaningful research assistant positions allow students to develop foundational research skills that they can build on as they progress through their academic career. Participation in undergraduate research is also a great way for students to explore their academic interests, learn about how research is conducted at the university, and develop transferable skills useful in a range of fields. Students who have been awarded and have accepted federal work-study as part of their financial aid package for the 2024-2025 academic year are eligible to apply for one or more of the WSRAP research job postings in the Student Employment/JobX platform. The listing of WSRAP research assistant opportunities is available on the Opportunities tab. Job opportunities for the 2024-2025 academic year will be posted beginning in June and will continue to be added through mid-August .

Dates & Deadlines

For the 2024-2025 academic year, WSRAP Research Assistant job opportunities will be posted to UConn's JobX platform from June through mid-August.

The listing is alphabetical by Faculty Department, but the list may be sorted by Faculty Name, Job Posting number, or Job Status. You may apply to more than one posting if it aligns with your goals and interests. Please follow the specifications of the posting and upload all requested information (e.g., resume, cover letter, availability, references).   Only applications from undergraduate students with work-study awards will be considered.

Student participants in the 2023-24 Work-Study Research Assistant Program are expected to complete the following program requirements:

  • Attend a Center for Career Development (CCD) in-person or virtual/online program/presentation;
  • Attend a colloquium, dissertation defense, or lecture relevant to your research area;
  • Other events/programs may count towards this requirement; check with OUR prior to attending to confirm the experience will count.
  • Complete one advising appointment with an OUR staff member each semester to discuss your research work, learning, goals, challenges/concerns, and next steps.
  • Prior to each advising appointment, you will complete a mid-semester reflection form on your WSRAP experience to date, which you'll discuss during your advising appointment. The Fall mid-semester reflection form will be available in mid-October. The Spring mid-semester reflection form will be available in late February.
  • Complete an end-of-year reflection by May 1, 2024 . Additional details on the year-end reflection will be posted later this fall. We encourage students to discuss this reflection with their mentors.

The time spent by students completing professional development activities, completing the mid-semester reflections, and completing the end-of-year reflection should be reported as work time. As students approach their maximum award amounts, we encourage students and faculty to plan ahead and reserve work hours for these tasks.

RESEARCH ASSISTANTS

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development. The Center is Africa-based and African-led, with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, and a West Africa Regional Office (WARO), in Dakar, Senegal. APHRC seeks to drive change by developing strong African research leadership and promoting evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) across sub-Saharan Africa.

The Individual Capacity Strengthening (ICS) unit in the Research Capacity Strengthening (RCS) Division seeks to engage twelve (12) Research Assistants (RAs) for the Partnership for Education of Health Professionals (PEP) project. The project aims to improve the management of cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) in Kenya through research evidence generation and capacity strengthening. Specific objectives of this project include:1)To conduct a baseline assessment that identifies individual and institutional capacity gaps regarding management of CMDs in Kenya and 2)To strengthen the capacity of medical training college (MTC) faculty and clinical mentors, for clinical medicine and nursing, through a short course training on management of CMDs. The RAs will support the project’s fieldwork activities.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Administer online survey using KoBo Collect or related program.
  • Conduct in-depth interviews and focus group interviews with select study participants.
  • Transcribe verbatim audio recordings from interviews.
  • Data entry, review and edit to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.
  • Collection and collation of research data from different sources like online surveys.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to the project.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Gender and Development Studies, Education, Population Studies/Demography, Statistics, Epidemiology, Economics, or related discipline (A Bachelor’s degree in these fields coupled with adequate experience is acceptable).
  • At least two years’ experience in research field work including data collection, managing data collection teams, and data analysis.
  • Proven quantitative data collection and analysis skills, with familiarity with related analysis packages STATA, SPSS, R.
  • Proven qualitative data collection and analysis skills, with familiarity with related analysis packages Nvivo or Atlas ti.
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities, multitask, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work in a culturally diverse team.
  • Must be able to communicate and write in English.

Desirable skills:

  • Experience conducting qualitative research interviews.
  • Experience in coding data using NVivo or any other software.
  • Experience in transcribing audio recordings for research.

Principal Duties

 We are recruiting for legislative assistants to work on a nonpartisan basis in the Fiscal and Policy Notes and Legislation functional areas.

  • A Legislative Assistant provides administrative support to the staff in their respective function.
  • Duties involve providing administrative and secretarial support to the Office of Policy Analysis.
  • Specific duties include tracking legislation, and editing, formatting, proofreading, and distributing correspondence, reports, and workgroup assignments.

Qualifications

  • Two years of general clerical or administrative support experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite.
  • Effective communication skills, including strong grammar and customer service skills.
  • Ability to set priorities, plan, and organize.
  • Ability to perform accurate work in a timely manner and coordinate multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently, in teams, and sometimes under extreme time pressures.
  • Availability for extended work hours, including late night and weekend work, during the 90-day legislative session (January-April). Standard office hours during the legislative interim (May- December).
  • Ability to lift things up to 50 pounds.

Employees of the Department of Legislative Services function on a nonpartisan basis and by law may not engage in partisan political activity at any time at the federal, state, or local level. The department offers a diverse and collegial environment for persons motivated to provide nonpartisan support to Maryland’s legislative and policymaking process. Research Finance Analyst II, Research Operations

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Research Finance Analyst II is the key sponsored program financial contact for department administrators, principal investigators and BMC central research administration related to monitoring, controlling, and reporting of grants and contracts.  The position performs, on a daily basis, analysis of accounts and communication with the BMC research community, sponsors and central BMC research administration personnel.  The Research Finance Analyst II is responsible for monitoring and communicating about the fiscal management of grants and contracts in accordance with government regulations, donor requirements, and Hospital policy. 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Research Finance Analyst II will be assigned a sponsored projects portfolio, for which he or she performs all grant related post-award functions according to the terms and conditions of the sponsor, including, award setup and update, budget and expense analysis, monthly invoicing, and financial reporting.
  • Responsible for communicating with investigators, department administrators regarding post-award financial management of sponsored funds, including spending versus budget, unbilled and billed amounts, aged receivables/collection items, un-reconciled accounts, and deficits.  Meets to review status of accounts.
  • Performs all financial closeout functions according to the terms and conditions of the sponsor and Hospital policy, including, reconciliation of the grant, preparation and submission of financial reports, final invoicing, purchase order liquidations, carryover of available funds, and AR follow-up. 
  • As necessary communicates with sponsors for problem resolution, outstanding receivables, budget adjustments and information gathering.
  • May be responsible for: shared inbox management, accounts receivable management, vendor invoices/uploads, processing journal entries, purchase order management, LOC draw prep, BU salary approvals and monthly invoice/upload, FFR and grant ending notifications, and subrecipient invoice review and payment.
  • Assists in supporting internal and external sponsor audits, pulling together supporting documentation and liaising with department staff to meet audit needs.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • BS/BA or equivalent work experience preferred, preferably in Accounting, Finance, or Business

EXPERIENCE:

  • Requires two to five years of relevant work experience, preferably in an Accounting or Financial role

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Requires strong computer skills, including a comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel  

  • Individual should have strong interpersonal skills with a high degree of analytical ability and capable of communicating effectively, both verbally and written
  • The ideal candidate will possess strong deductive reasoning skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are required
