• Applications are now open for the Library’s Creative in Residence 2024

The Library’s Special Collections is home to our region’s cultural heritage. Our collections are vast and diverse and represent a wide range of topics that build the narrative of our region, with both triumphs and tribulations recorded.

The residency offers the opportunity for one creative to be immersed in the Library’s Special Collections and to use their research to create an original work that responds to the collections. Possible platforms or formats include, but are not limited to, immersive experiences, digital, audiovisual, sculpture, artworks, performance, and writing.

The Creative in Residence programme provides a $10,000 stipend for a 6 month residency. An additional budget of up to $5,000 will be provided for materials.

Studying Creative Writing

English literature with creative writing.

Discover the literature that has shaped our society and tap into your creative skills on our English Literature with Creative Writing degree.

Through the Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts , we provide a portfolio of short courses open to our students and the public.

Collaborations and events

Our teaching and research is closely linked to the Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts (NCLA) programme. This gives our students the opportunity to meet internationally known writers, and to dialogue with them. We increase your awareness of creative, social, and cultural issues that both influence contemporary writers and are in turn shaped by them.

Students are also invited to attend seminars and workshops with visiting writers from our events programme. In the past these have included:

We have frequent public readings by staff, visiting artists, and postgraduates. We jointly sponsor, with Bloodaxe Books , the Newcastle/Bloodaxe Poetry Lectures.

We have excellent resources on our creative writing course. These include the Bloodaxe Poetry Archives and the collection of multi-award-winning poet Barry MacSweeney . We also retain poetry and audio files from many of our events.

What skills and experience we're looking for.

Candidates should have the drive to become outstanding classroom practitioners who can make a significant contribution to the school's ongoing success by bringing new ideas, initiative and a commitment to raising standards. You will be energetic, creative and passionate about teaching; willing to engage with the most up to date evidence around effective teaching and how pupils best learn; and willing to share expertise while continuing to develop your pedagogy.

What the school offers its staff

• We are proud to have staff on local delivery teams for the National Professional Qualification (NPQ) in Leading Teaching; the NPQ in Leading Teacher Development; and the NPQ in Behaviour and Culture. Additionally, members of the Throckley team support the delivery of the ECF programme by facilitating training for both Early Careers Teachers, and mentors, supporting the work of an approved local ECF delivery partner.
• We are actively involved in Initial Teacher Training and continuing professional development. This thriving team has a wealth of experience and expertise which both newly qualified and more experienced practitioners will undoubtedly both benefit from and contribute to.
• We pride ourselves in being an evidence-informed school; staff development is central to our practice. A number of staff are currently studying towards National Professional Qualifications, all of which have an impact on wider staff development and, in turn, pupil outcomes.
• We are a Behaviour Hub lead school and this programme gives us an excellent opportunity to share our exemplary behaviour culture and practices with other schools regionally and nationally.
• We are proud to be an accredited Pupil Book Study training school. Pupil Book study provides a systematic, evidence-informed toolkit which supports schools in evaluating the quality and impact of curriculum, through studying teaching and learning.
• We are a PFI school. The building was initially planned as a middle school but was specially converted to meet the requirements of younger children. The learning environment and facilities that we offer are exceptional.

About Throckley Primary School

Throckley Primary is a larger than average primary school based in the Outer West of Newcastle. The school was graded outstanding in all areas in our November 2013 Ofsted report and is currently one of the highest performing schools in the country. We are ranked in the top 100 of primary schools in the country (out of over 16,000) in the 2023 DfE Primary School Performance Tables.
