Volleyball is one of the easiest sports around. Twenty-five points, three sets; simple. I have heard many compare it to “a more intense version of keep it up,” but of course, none of those people have ever played the sport competitively. None of these people have gone through 12 seasons total, having many coaches who take it much more seriously than just a sport. So, here are a few reasons why this sport is so “easy.” 1. No effort is required. Saying no effort is required in the sport is like saying no breath is required to live. Every single point, there is a need for much movement. In the front row, you have to constantly be ready to block if the ball is on the other side of the net. If the ball is on your side, you have to start on the net, and you have to transition back to pass. After that, you have to move outside of the court to be ready to make your approach and hit the ball. This is obviously a breeze. If you play in the back row, you must stay low and ready and always be moving; you must be prepared for a ball to be come over at any time. Three people have to cover ⅔ of the whole court, and that is clearing a piece of cake. 2. Learning forms and footworks are simple. There are many different forms and footworks to learn in the sport of volleyball. To hit, the approach must be very consistent. It has three steps, and they have different purposes. The first step is the slower and larger step. It is used to put you in the direction of the ball. The second two steps are the power steps, and they are taken almost simultaneously. At the end of your approach, you end with your feet shoulder width apart, arms behind you, and low, ready to spring up as high as you can. This clearing will always look the same, and coaches definitely don’t constantly try to perfect it. 3. There is really no need for knee pads. Diving is a huge part of the game , and for someone to say knee pads aren’t needed is crazy talk.The one way that this sport compares to keep it up is that you don’t want to let the ball hit the floor. Players are taught how to dive in order to save almost any ball. The hardest part about diving is letting yourself hit the floor. Many players fear hurting themselves, so this causes them to hesitate.

The receiving team must prevent the ball from falling on the ground and pass it onto the court of the opponent. Each team gets to touch the ball a maximum of 3 times amongst the team members before passing it to the other team. However, an individual player can only touch a ball once before passing.

The rally continues unless a team makes the ball fall on the ground of the opposition or one team commits a fault and loses. Some faults can include touching the net, more than the allowed number of touches by the team or a player of the team, stepping outside the court boundaries, and so on.

Each time a team wins the serve, they must rotate. The entire team is required to switch the sides moving in a clockwise manner with one player moving in a front line whereas another player moving to the backline.

Volleyball is a very popular sport and has its tournaments. The most famous of which is the FIVB Volleyball Grand Champions cup.  It is an international tournament where several countries are represented by their men's and women's teams. Eleven- and 12-year-old boys aren’t naturally gracious losers, so when the Cumberland Americans were eliminated from the 2014 Little League World Series by just one run, a national TV audience could have witnessed an all-time adolescent meltdown. Instead, coach Dave Belisle delivered an all-time “heads up high” speech that turned tears of sadness into tears of joy. It’s a masterclass in how to handle disappointment.

4. This Little Kid’s Speech After Learning to Ride a Bike

If your kid won’t take it from you, let ’em take it from one of their own. Hell, you take it from one of their own. With enough confidence in yourself, you’ll know how to deliver an inspirational speech to your child. If you don’t, you’ll get there with practice. Also, shout out to the dad who perfectly set up the kid to deliver the ultimate attaboy for every training wheel-hating kid.

And, well, that may be the case. Still, admit you’d love to see a gang of 6-year-olds scream, “I am champion!” before tripping over a soccer ball for 40 minutes.

7. Jim Valvano’s ESPY Speech

At their best, sports can teach life’s greatest lessons. In his acceptance speech for the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award at the first ESPY Awards in 1993, Jim Valvano, basketball player, coach, and broadcaster, delivered a masterclass in that premise. Ten years after leading North Carolina State to an NCAA championship in the greatest upset ever and then battling late-stage, terminal cancer, Jimmy V outlined his blueprint for a fulfilling life in three simple rules: Laugh, think, and cry. Every day. Do it, and you’ll indeed be fulfilled.

You should spend some time in thought. Number three is you should have your emotions moved to tears — could be happiness or joy. But think about it. 8. Tony Romo’s 2016 Press Conference About Dak Prescott

After a back injury and lots of missed time, Tony Romo lost his dream job — starting NFL quarterback. His backup, Dak Prescott, proved himself worthy of the starting job with his play. In a press conference, Romo addresses the situation with grace and eloquence. Instead of sulking or complaining, he speaks from the heart about the darkness of not being able to play, gives thanks for the people who helped him when he was younger, and promises to do the same for his protégé. In light of his present gig as an in-demand NFL commentator, it’s obvious his advice has paid off.

Choice Quote: “There are special moments that come from a shared commitment to play a role while doing it together that’s what you remember not your stats or your prestige but the relationships and the achievement that you created through a group.”

9. Coach Tony Arcuri’s 2007 Pregame Speech to the Indian Hill Braves High School Football Team.

This is an important lesson for your kid, who almost certainly will face an opponent (or teammate, for that matter) who is bigger, stronger, and/or faster than they are.

Choice Quote : “They’re bigger. They got athletes, they got guys going to Division 1 schools. All right? We can see that and so can everybody else. But nobody can see the intangible in us. Be the intangible tonight!”

10. Drew Brees’ Speech After Breaking Dan Marino’s Record

In 2011, Drew Brees set the record for most passing yards in a season and gave this motivational sports speech to his coaches and teammates after the game. Ever humble, Brees exhaustively lists every person who helped him along the way, from his teammates to the equipment managers. He also finds time to get in a ball joke. What a pro.

11. Herb Brooks’ Miracle Pregame Speech

Yes, this speech is from a movie, which violates this list’s only rule. Herb Brooks’ speech before the 1980 Men’s U.S. Olympic hockey team pulled off the “Miracle on Ice” happened behind closed doors. But none of that matters because Junior can’t lose — not this game, not tonight. Also, because the movie recreation, Miracle, led to this kid reciting Brooks’ speech .

For some, participating in sports is a desire to push themselves higher and harder each time, and to feel a sense of accomplishment when they complete another training session or game. The fact that motivation is the one factor in sports performance over which you have control is why it’s so crucial. All athletic efforts and achievements are built on a foundation of motivation. ‘Thank You:’ Showing appreciation to your athletes

Anson Dorrance, the legendary women’s soccer coach at the University of North Carolina, closes out each season with a senior letter. It’s a “thank you” to those who are playing their final season in a Tar Heel uniform, but on a much deeper level, it’s a heartfelt tribute expressing what each senior has meant not just to the program, but also to Dorrance.

It’s our job as coaches to make everyone realize that they are an important cog in our club…

But the senior letter isn’t just about seniors. Dorrance uses it as a motivational tactic to get more from the girls who aren’t seniors. Prior to playing in the title game, which Dorrance has done more than two dozen times, he’ll ask all of the seniors to leave the locker room before reading each senior letter to the underclassmen. By the time he’s finished, everyone in the room is chomping at the bit to play for the seniors and send them off as national champions.

The letter helps everyone on the team understand what those seniors mean to the program. In Dorrance’s mind, those letters were his final push to make sure greatness was achieved. And evidenced by his 22 national championships, it worked.

A simple ‘thank you’

What struck me most about the senior letter was the individualized nature of a gesture that includes everyone, regardless of their status on the team. In Dorrance’s mind, every player is important to the overall success of the program, and he wants everyone to know it, especially those who might not fill up the stat sheet.

If a player has a uniform on a team, that player serves some sort of critical role. And every role — no matter how big or small — bears some kind of impact. Many times, players are in roles they don’t necessarily like; only nine guys play on a baseball field at one time, and at the college and professional levels, there are always far more watching from the bench. The larger the roster, the greater likelihood that some players carry a feeling of insignificance to their team. It’s our job as coaches to make everyone realize that they are an important cog in our club, regardless of how many at-bats they get or innings they throw.

Making a difference

As for me, in 2017, our Greenville Drive facilitated the creation of “the championship thank you.”

The Drive, the minor league team I was privileged to manage for four years, won the first South Atlantic League title in the 12-year history of the franchise. It was an incredibly special season on so many fronts; one that I won’t soon forget. On my drive home from South Carolina to New Jersey, I had a chance to reflect on the five-plus months that made our year as rewarding as it was. It was during this drive, thinking about countless moments that made us who we are, I realized something pretty remarkable.

We had 49 players come through Greenville during the 2017 season. That’s the most I’ve ever had in my four years managing the team. Every one of those 49 guys did something that helped us along the way. From a guy who played in just a single game, to the 10 guys who were with us from start to finish, to everyone in between, I could see very clearly in my mind specific moments that each one of those individual players had over the course of the year that helped us on our road to a championship. Every single guy had their own championship moment.

The “championship thank you” began in the form of a letter, commending the collective group on accomplishing something it had never accomplished. In it, I also detailed a personal routine of my own where, before every game, I would print out four lineup cards. Three of those cards go to the umpires, and the extra card would go to a pile on my desk to later be used as note paper.

My message related to the resiliency of a player who gave up a game-tying home run in the eighth inning, but got back up to get outs and give us a chance to win in the ninth. It was showing how the hustle from one helped bring out the hustle in all. It was even commending a player who was ejected for defending our team, an example how we were one for all, and all for one. Each one of these 49 individual moments created some pretty unforgettable team moments when all was said and done.

Who knows how the “championship thank you” will resonate with our players. Some may have tossed it in the garbage without a second thought, while others might have framed it as the keepsake I intended it to be. By time they finish reading that handwritten note, I simply wish for each of the 49 players to understand the part that they played in helping us win the whole thing, and to know that I sincerely valued them in doing so. My hope is that at some point down the road, whether it be in baseball or not, that their personal “championship thank you” help them understand that they always matter.

OPINION: Homophobia is still prevalent online

On one fine day, while navigating the cesspool of Instagram Reels, I stumbled upon a reel of a rather cute guy. Naturally, I commented “cute” on that post expressing my opinion about the reel. The comment section is something that I often avoid when interacting with social media but whenever I do use it, I rarely face any ridicule. What followed my comment was something surprising in an age where we champion diversity and inclusivity in public spaces. I faced homophobic replies that were not only directed toward me but also toward the user of the Instagram account that posted the reel. It was a bit hurtful, but I thought of this instant as an object of inquiry.   

Multiple layers of interaction function in social media hate — right from a generalized hate word to a personal attack. In my specific example — anonymous users employed hate by labeling me “gay” as something that I should be ashamed of. The user read my initial comment and decided to give me a label that I do not completely conform to and use it against me as a weapon. Now, all of this was done under the garb of anonymity. I didn’t know the user who replied to my comment and neither did they know me.   

Social media platforms lead to impersonal interactions. These impersonal interactions are fundamentally dehumanizing. Dehumanization happens in the way that an individual is driven to spread hate against what a human represents through their comment and not the human themself.  

The very extrapolation of the comment to represent a human is central to spreading hate. Now the prejudices and discriminatory beliefs that one may have can be employed to fight against this entity that is a representative of something that one despises. This is a fallacy in judgment as a human being is a complex entity. A failure to recognize this complexity is a failure to recognize a human.   

One perceives a non-human on the other side of a social media interaction empowering them with the liberty to unleash hate. Hate on social media is a result of not acknowledging the human in an interaction which is embedded in the platform's nature. It is difficult to suggest that a similar hateful behavior will be displayed in a physical one-on-one conversation. Generally, the physical nature of this interaction would ensure the recognition of both entities’ humanity leading to a possible civil conversation.   

One way of humanizing our online interactions could be to simply stop and think about a human at the other end of the interaction chain. Before commenting on something with hate we must recognize that we do not know the person that we may end up hurting. We must understand that we have the power to stop a hateful dehumanizing cycle by not starting it in the first place. These are steps that we can take to build a safer social media environment at an individual level but hate speech remains an issue on the broader social level.   

Online platforms present a public space that tends to mimic characteristics of public spaces like that of mob behavior. Online m ob behavior is generally driven by intense emotion which can then be used to spread hate speech. People who engage in hate speech tend to have a history of radicalization which enables weaponization of existing prejudice against certain groups leading to their easy propagation. For instance, people who associate intense religious belief with the traditional family and see the LGBTQ+ community as a threat to that institution then may spread hate against the LGBTQ+ community.  

Hate speech has real-life consequences. Exposure to hate speech may lead to higher levels of stress impacting the subject’s psychology. Hateful speech has been historically correlated to a rise in violence specifically targeting marginalized communities, leading to gruesome consequences like large-scale violence. Even today, online hate speech is linked to a global rise in violence . This rise in violence can either be through direct mobilization against a certain group or general tension that leads to violence.  

Anti-LGBTQ+ crimes are on the rise . What I faced may not be an instance of hate crime or speech, but it was something intended to be hurtful. Hate speech starts with an intent to hurt. Radicalized groups make weaker sections of society their targets. We as people of these marginalized groups must demand better speech regulation from private social media platforms like Instagram to counter hate groups. Demanding better regulatory speech policies and recognizing the human in our online interactions can make social media a safer space — not just for us but for everyone.
