Stories of human struggles always carry the profundity of truth as they mostly remain close to real incidents. Apart from uncovering realities, which depict people in their helpless state, they portray the invincible power that helps them break free from cultural, physical or emotional shackles binding them.

Jeevitham Aadujeevitham by Blessy and Praveendas

In 2008, writer Benyamin penned a novel based on the true story of a Malayali who flew to Saudi Arabia dreaming of making life better and was duped to toil in the desert. The book titled 'Aadujeevitham', turned out to be an instant bestseller and the incredible travails of Najeeb, the protagonist in the novel, deeply moved the Malayali psyche. Film director Blessy planned a movie, based on the same book, which took almost 16 years to hit the screen. The making of the movie was undoubtedly a painstaking exercise, as a major chunk of it was filmed in the desert. In the book Jeevitham Aadujeevitham authored by Blessy and Praveendas, the arduous journey of the film crew and the actors towards the finishing line has been explored as captivatingly as the movie itself.

Ram C/O Anandhi by Akhil P Dharmajan

Akhil P Dharmajan's book Ram C/O Anandhi was released in 2020. In the writer's own words, the book is supposed to be read with the feel of watching a movie. The vivid picturisation of characters and events gives the book its cinematic quality. The novel follows Ram, the central character in the book, and the people who get involved in his life. The story is set in Chennai and Akhil is said to have lived in the city for two years before writing the novel. The narrative progresses engagingly as the writer blends his own experiences with the fictional plot.

Ethiru by Kunjaman M

Ethiru, considered one of the most motivational books in Malayalam, deals with the complications the Dalits undergo while fighting their way to gain self-esteem and merge with mainstream society. In the preface to the book, social commentator and writer K Venu wrote that Dr Ambedkar had pointed out the slavish attitude of the Dalits for social and historical reasons. He said Ambedkar explained how the Dalits were not able to come out of that mindset fast. An individual who is not a Dalit won't be able to realise its complexities. The only way to understand it is to experience it, he said. The book throws light on the same intricacies of this conundrum.

ബഷീറിന്റെ ബാല്യകാലസഖിയെ കുറിച്ചോര്‍ക്കുമ്പോയൊക്കെ ആദ്യം മനസ്സിലേക്കോടിയെത്തുന്നത്‌ മജീദിന്റെയും സുഹറയുടെയും ബാല്യകാല സൗഹൃദത്തെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിക്കുന്ന മാഞ്ചുവടും, അവരുടെ പ്രണയത്തിന്റെ സ്‌മാരകമായ ചെമ്പരത്തി ചെടിയും, അവരുടെ വിരഹത്തിന്റെ മൂക സാക്ഷിയായ രാത്രികളുമാണ്‌. ഹോട്ടലിലെ പത്രം കഴുകല്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞു മജീദ്‌ സുഹറയെ ഓര്‍ത്തുകൊണ്ട്‌ കഴിഞ്ഞ രാത്രികള്‍.

നക്ഷത്രങ്ങള്‍ നിറഞ്ഞ നീലാകാശത്തിനു താഴെ ടെറസില്‍ ചിരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട്‌ ഉറങ്ങുന്ന സുഹൃത്തുക്കളുടെ നടുവില്‍ കയറു കട്ടിലില്‍ സുഹറയെ ഓര്‍ത്തുകൊണ്ട്‌ കിടക്കുന്ന മജീദ്‌. ഇങ്ങനെയൊരു ചിത്രം ബഷീര്‍ സങ്കല്‌പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടോ എന്നെനിക്കറിയില്ല. എന്നാല്‍ ബാല്യകലസഖിക്കൊപ്പം ഞാന്‍ ഓര്‍ക്കുന്ന ആദ്യ ചിത്രം ഈ രാത്രിയുടെതാണ്‌.

വളരെ ചെറുപ്പത്തില്‍ തന്നെ മജീദും സുഹറയും സുഹൃത്തുക്കളായിരുന്നു. എനാല്‍ അതിനു മുമ്പ്‌്‌ അവര്‍ ശത്രുക്കളും ആയിരുന്നു. അവരുടെ ബാല്യകാലത്തിന്‌ നഖക്ഷതങ്ങളുടെ എരിവും മാമ്പഴതിന്റെ മധുരവും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

കഥ തുടങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍ ഏതൊരു സാധാരണ ബാല്യം പോലെയും സുന്ദരവും കുസൃതി നിറഞ്ഞതുമായ ഒരു ബാല്യകാലമാണ്‌. എന്നാല്‍ ആ ബാല്യം വെറുതെയങ്ങു പറഞ്ഞു പോവുകയല്ല ബഷീര്‍ ചെയ്‌തിരിക്കുന്നത്‌. മറിച്ച്‌ ആ ബാല്യം നമ്മെ അനുഭവിപ്പിക്കുകയാണ്‌. അതുകൊണ്ട്‌ തന്നെ മജീദിന്റെയും സുഹറയുടെയും ബാല്യം നമ്മുടെ സ്വന്തം ബാല്യത്തെ പോലെ നമ്മുടെ ഹൃദയത്തോട്‌ ചേര്‍ന്ന്‌ നില്‍ക്കുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ ബാല്യത്തില്‍ തന്നെ മജീദും സുഹറയും നമ്മുടെ ഹൃദയം കീഴടക്കുന്നു. അവരുടെ ശത്രുതയും സൗഹൃദവും നമ്മളും അനുഭവിക്കുന്നു.

“ചെറുക്കാ, ആ മുയുത്തത്‌ രണ്ടും മുന്നം കണ്ടത്‌ ഞാനാ”, എന്ന്‌ പറയുന്ന സുഹറയെ നമുക്ക്‌ എങ്ങനെ സ്‌നേഹിക്കാതിരിക്കാനാവും! അതുപോലെ, “ഓ മിഷറ്‌്‌ കടിക്കുവല്ലോ!” എന്ന പരിഹാസത്തില്‍ ചവിട്ടി മാവില്‍ കയറുന്ന മജീദിനെയും.

ഒരു സ്വപ്‌ന ജീവിയായ മജീദ്‌ മരങ്ങളില്‍ കയറി ഉച്ചിയിലിരുന്നു വിശാലമായ ലോകത്തെ നോക്കി കാണാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മരത്തിന്റെ അടിയില്‍ നിന്നും “മക്കം കാണാമോ ചെറുക്കാ?” എന്നു ചോദിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ നമ്മളും മരത്തിന്റെ ചോട്ടിലിരുന്നു മുകളിലേക്ക്‌ നോക്കിപോകും.

സുഹറയും മജീദും വളരുന്നതിനനുസരിച്ച്‌ അവരുടെ മനസ്സും വളരുന്നത്‌ കാണാം . ഒട്ടും തന്നെ ഏച്ചുകെട്ടില്ലാത്ത ആ വളര്‍ച്ചയില്‍ ബാല്യകാല സുഹൃത്തുക്കള്‍ പ്രണയിനികളാകുമ്പോള്‍ നമ്മുടെ മനസ്സില്‍ തീരെ അസ്വാഭാവികത തോന്നിക്കാതെ എഴുത്തുകാരന്‍ വിജയിക്കുന്നു.

അയൽക്കാർ തമ്മിലുള്ള ബാല്യകാല പ്രണയം, കൗമാരപ്രായത്തിൽ വികാരാധീനമായ പ്രണയത്തിലേക്ക് വിരിഞ്ഞു. മജീദ്, സുഹറ ഇവരാണ് ഇതിന്റെ കേന്ദ്രകഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ. മജീദിന്റെ പിതാവ് സമ്പന്നനായിരുന്നു, അതിനാൽ പഠനത്തിൽ ഉത്സാഹമില്ലാതിരുന്നിട്ട് കൂടിയും, അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പഠിക്കുവാനായി വിദൂര പട്ടണത്തിലെ ഒരു സ്കൂളിലേക്ക് അയച്ചു. മറുവശത്ത് സുഹ്‌റയുടെ പിതാവിന് രണ്ട് അറ്റങ്ങളും കൂട്ടിമുട്ടിക്കാൻ തന്നെ പ്രായാസപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു സാധാരണ മനുഷ്യനായിരുന്നു. എന്നിട്ടും അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ മകളുടെ പഠനത്തിലുള്ള ഇഷ്ടം കണ്ടിട്ട്, മകളെ സ്കൂളിൽ അയയ്ക്കാൻ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ അവളുടെ പിതാവിന്റെ മരണം കൂടുതൽ പഠിക്കുവാനുള്ള അവളുടെ പ്രതീക്ഷകളെല്ലാം തകർത്തു. സുഹ്‌റയുടെ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം സ്പോൺസർ ചെയ്യാൻ മജീദ് പിതാവിനോട് അപേക്ഷിച്ചെങ്കിലും അദ്ദേഹം അത് നിരസിച്ചു.

അച്ഛനുമായുള്ള ഏറ്റുമുട്ടലിനെത്തുടർന്ന് മജീദ് വീട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് ഇറങ്ങുകയും നാട്ടിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് വളരെക്കാലം വിദൂര ദേശങ്ങളിൽ അലഞ്ഞുനടക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. മടങ്ങിയെത്തുമ്പോൾ, തന്റെ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ മുൻ സമ്പത്ത് എല്ലാം ഇല്ലാതായെന്നും തന്റെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട സുഹ്‌റ മറ്റൊരാളെ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചതായും അദ്ദേഹം കണ്ടെത്തുന്നു. സ്നേഹം നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതിൽ അദ്ദേഹം വളരെ ദുഖിതനായി. മുൻപ് വളരെ സുന്ദരിയും ഊർജ്ജസ്വലവുമായിരുന്ന സുഹ്‌റ ഇപ്പോൾ ജീവിതത്താൽ ക്ഷീണിതയായ ഒരു സ്ത്രീയായിരിക്കുന്നു .അങ്ങനെ സങ്കടത്തിലൂടെയാണ് നോവൽ അവസാനിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.

മനുഷ്യാന്തരത പലരൂപത്തിൽ ഉയർന്നുവരുന്ന കേരളീയ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിൽ മലയാളനോവൽ മറ്റൊരു വഴിത്തിരിവിലേക്കു നീങ്ങുന്നതായി കാണാം. ആധുനികതയുടെ  ഭാഗമായി ജനിച്ചുവീണ മലയാളനോവൽ ഓരോ കാലഘട്ടത്തിലെയും സാമൂഹ്യപരിണാമങ്ങളിലൂടെയാണ് അതിന്റെ ഓരോ കാലത്തെയും ഭാവുകത്വത്തെ രൂപപ്പെടുത്തിയത് രണ്ടായിരത്തിനു ശേഷമുള്ള കേരളീയ സാമൂഹ്യാന്തരീക്ഷത്തിലെ ഡിജിറ്റൽ പരിണാമങ്ങളാണ് പുതിയ നോവലിനെ നിർവചിക്കുന്നത്.  മലയാളനോവലിന്റെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽനിന്ന് നോക്കുമ്പോൾ രണ്ടുതരത്തിലുള്ള മാറ്റങ്ങളായിട്ടാണ് നമുക്കിത് കാണാൻ കഴിയുക.  ആധുനികത നിർവചിച്ച ജനപ്രിയം/ജനപ്രിയേതരം എന്ന നിർവചനത്തെ അപ്രസക്തമാക്കിക്കൊണ്ട് പുതിയ രൂപത്തിലുള്ള ജനുസുകളുടെ കൂടിക്കലരരായിട്ട് നോവൽ മാറുന്നു. അതിലൂടെ നോവൽ ഭാഷ, ഉള്ളടക്കം, പ്രത്യയശാസ്ത്രം എന്നിവയിലൊക്കെ പ്രകടമായിട്ടുള്ള അട്ടിമറിക്കലുകൾ സൃഷ്ടിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. മുഖ്യധാരാ നോവലുകൾ അവഗണിച്ചിരുന്ന, ജനപ്രിയം എന്നു വിളിച്ച് മാറ്റി നിർത്തിയിരുന്ന കുറ്റാന്വേഷണസാഹിത്യം നോവലിന്റെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ധാരയായി. ഭാഷാപരമായും ആശയപരമായും കുറ്റാന്വേഷണം എന്ന് പറയുന്ന പ്രക്രിയ ഗൗരവമായി ഉന്നയിക്കുന്ന സൃഷ്ടികൾ നവഭാവുകത്വമായി പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു. ഡിജിറ്റൽ സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന പുതിയ സാമൂഹികതയും  നവവൈജ്ഞാനികതയും പരമ്പരാഗത സാമൂഹികതയെ പൊളിച്ചെഴുന്നതാണ് ഇതിലൂടെ ദൃശ്യമാകുന്നത്. അങ്ങനെ സാഹിത്യപാരമ്പര്യം വലുതായൊന്നും അവകാശപ്പെടാനില്ലാത്ത പുതിയൊരു തലമുറ എഴുത്തുകാര്‍ക്ക് ദൃശ്യത ലഭിക്കുന്നു. അവരുടെ ആവിഷ്കാരങ്ങള്‍ കൂടുതൽ ശക്തമായി സ്ഥാനമുറപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ഈയൊരു ഭാവുകത്വത്തെ സവിശേഷ വിളംബരം ചെയ്യുന്നതാണ് കെ പി ജയകുമാറിന്റെ “ആ’’ എന്ന നോവൽ.  കുറ്റാന്വേഷണത്തിന്റെ സ്വഭാവത്തെ പ്രമേയത്തിന്റെ കാതലാക്കിക്കൊണ്ട് സാമൂഹികരംഗത്തെ ഹിംസകളെകുറിച്ചുള്ള അന്വേഷണത്തിലൂടെ പുതിയൊരു ജനുസ്സിന്റെ സാധ്യതകൂടി തുറന്നുവയ്ക്കുകയാണ് ഈ  നോവൽ.  “ആ” എന്ന പേര് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ മലയാള അക്ഷരത്തിന്റെ സാംസ്കാരിക പാഠങ്ങളാണ് ഈ നോവല്‍ മുന്നോട്ടുവയ്ക്കുന്ന സംവാദ പരിസരമെന്നു പറയാം. 

മലയാള അക്ഷരങ്ങളെ ആധുനികതയിൽ രൂപപ്പെടുത്തിയത് കോട്ടയം നഗരമാണ്. കോട്ടയത്തെത്തിയ സി എം എസ് മിഷനറി ബെഞ്ചമിൻ ബെയിലിയാണ് അച്ചടിയ്ക്കായി മലയാളം അക്ഷരങ്ങളെ വാർത്തതെന്നാണ് ചരിത്രം.  ഇതേ കോട്ടയം തന്നെയാണ്  അക്ഷരവും ജനങ്ങളും തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധത്തെ പുതിയ രൂപത്തിൽ നിർവഹിച്ച സാക്ഷരതയുടെ ചരിത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഒരേട് സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നത്. കേരളത്തിന്റെ ആധുനികതയുടെ സവിശേഷത വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിലൂടെയുള്ള സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ആധുനികവത്കരണമായിരുന്നു. നവോത്ഥാന പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ പുരോഗതിയായി മുന്നോട്ടുവച്ചത് കൊളോണിയൽ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിലൂടെയുള്ള വിഭവാർജനമാണ്. ആ ചരിത്രത്തെ മുന്നോട്ടുകൊണ്ടുപോകുന്ന പ്രകിയയിലാണ് കേരളത്തിന്റെ എഴുപതുകളിൽ ശക്തമായ സാക്ഷരതയുടെ ചരിത്രം പ്രധാനമാകുന്നത്. ഈ ബൃഹദ് ചരിത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഇടപെട്ടവരെ വെട്ടിമാറ്റുന്ന കഥകള്‍ ഉയരുന്നിടത്താണ് ചരിത്രം പ്രശ്നവല്കരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. മറവിയിലേക്കുപോയ ആഖ്യാനങ്ങളെ കണ്ടെടുക്കുന്നതിന്റെ രാഷ്ട്രീയം ഉന്നയിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത് ഇവിടെയാണ്. കേരളത്തിന്റെ ആധുനികതയിലെ ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ പാഠങ്ങളിലെ വിടവുകളിലേക്കു സൂക്ഷ്മനോട്ടം നടത്തുകയാണ് “ആ” ചെയ്യുന്നത്.

അക്ഷരവും ആധുനികതയും തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധത്തിൽ മറ്റൊരു വിടവുകൂടി കേരളത്തിൽ സംഭവിച്ചിരുന്നു. കൊളോണിയലിസത്തിലൂടെ ആധുനികമാക്കപ്പെട്ട മലയാളസാഹിത്യത്തിൽ 1950 കളോടെ മറ്റൊരു ധാര പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. ചില വാരികകളിലൂടെ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ട നോവലുകൾ സാധാരണ ജനങ്ങൾ വ്യാപകമായി ആസ്വദിച്ചതോടെ സാഹിത്യ ബുദ്ധിജീവികൾ അവയെ മോശപ്പെട്ട സൃഷ്ടികളായി വ്യാഖ്യാനിച്ചതാണ് സംഭവം. അങ്ങനെ ജനപ്രിയ/ ജനപ്രിയേതരം എന്ന വിടവ് സാഹിത്യ പൊതുമണ്ഡലത്തിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു. ജനപ്രിയ നോവലുകളെ പൈങ്കിളിസാഹിത്യമെന്നു മുദ്രയടിച്ചു. പൈങ്കിളി സാഹിത്യത്തിന്റെ കേന്ദ്രം കോട്ടയം നഗരമായിരുന്നു. അതിനാൽ പൈങ്കിളിസാഹിത്യം അച്ചടിക്കുന്ന വാരികകളെ കോട്ടയം വാരികകളെന്നും മകാരം വാരികകളെന്നും കളിയാക്കിപ്പോന്നു. കേരളത്തിന്റെ ആധുനിക പൊതുമണ്ഡലത്തെ സാധ്യമാക്കിയതിൽ കോട്ടയം നഗരത്തിന് സവിശേഷമായ സ്ഥാനമുണ്ടെന്നുാണ് ഇതെല്ലാം സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ പൊതുവിൽ മധ്യവ‍ര്‍ഗ ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികൾക്ക് ആധിപത്യമുള്ള നഗരമായി വ്യവഹരിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന കോട്ടയത്തിന് ഹൈന്ദവാശയങ്ങളാൽ നിയന്ത്രിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന മലയാളസാഹിത്യ പൊതുമണ്ഡലത്തിൽ കാര്യമായ സ്ഥാനമില്ലായിരുന്നു. പൈങ്കളിസാഹിത്യത്തിന്റെ വരവ് അതിന് ആക്കംകൂട്ടുകയും ചെയ്തു. മലയാളസാഹിത്യത്തിന്റെയും ഭാഷയുടെയും ആധുനികീകരണത്തിലെ ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ ഈ വിടവുകളിലാണ് “ആ” എന്ന നോവൽ ഇടപെടുന്നത്.

ഓ‍‍ര്‍മ്മകൾ നഷ്ടമാകുന്ന സദാനന്ദന്റെ ഡയറിക്കുറിപ്പുകൾ അയാളുടെ ഡോക്ട‍ര്‍ എഴുത്തുകാരന് നല്കുന്നു. ആ കുറിപ്പുകള്‍ കോട്ടയത്തെ സാക്ഷരതാപ്രശ്നത്തിലേക്ക് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ വഴുതിവീഴുന്നതിന് താകണമാകുന്നു. കോട്ടയം കളക്ട്രേറ്റിലെ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായിരുന്ന സദാനന്ദന്റെ ഓ‍ര്‍മ്മക്കുറിപ്പുകളിൽ നിന്നാണ് കോട്ടയം സാക്ഷരതാ പ്രവ‍ര്‍ത്തനത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രം വെളിപ്പെടുന്നത്. സാക്ഷരതാ മുന്നേറ്റത്തിന്റെ നേതൃത്വം കളക്ടര്‍ക്ക് ആയിരുന്നില്ലന്നും ഏതാനും അധ്യാപകരുടെയും അക്ഷരം പഠിക്കണം എന്നാഗ്രഹിച്ച രാജുവിനെപ്പോലുള്ള സാധാരണ മനുഷ്യരുടെയും ആഗ്രഹവും അധ്വാനവുമായിരുന്നു അതിനു പിന്നിലെന്നും തിരിച്ചറിയതിവിടെയാണ്. കളക്ട‍ര്‍ നായകനായ ഔദ്യോഗിക ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ഹിംസകളെക്കുറിച്ച് തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞതോടെ സാക്ഷരതയുടെ വെട്ടിമാറ്റപ്പെട്ട ചരിത്രത്തിലേക്ക് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ നീങ്ങുന്നു. അക്ഷരം പഠിക്കണം എന്നാഗ്രഹിച്ച രാജുവെന്ന കഞ്ചാവ് വില്പനക്കാരന്റെ ത്വര തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ ജോണ്‍ എന്ന അധ്യാപകനാണ് കോട്ടയത്തെ സമ്പൂ‍‍‍ര്‍ണ സാക്ഷരമാക്കുന്നതിന്റെ പ്രവ‍ര്ത്ത‍നങ്ങൾക്ക് തുടക്കം കുറിക്കുന്നത്. കോട്ടയം സമ്പൂ‍ര്‍ണ സാക്ഷരയിലേക്ക് വരുന്നതിന് വിലങ്ങുതടിയായി നിന്നുവെന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നത് കുട്ടപ്പന്‍ എന്ന തെങ്ങുകയറ്റ തൊഴിലാളിയാണ്. അങ്ങനെ രാജുവും കുട്ടപ്പനും ഈ അന്വേഷണത്തിലെ രണ്ട് ധാരകളായിത്തീരുന്നു. സദാനന്ദന്റെ ഓര്‍മ്മകൾ അത്ര നിഷ്കളങ്കമല്ലെന്നു മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നതോടെ എഴത്തുകാരനും സുഹൃത്ത് രണ്‍ജിത്തും രാജുവിനെയും കുട്ടപ്പനെയും തിരക്കി കുറ്റാന്വേഷകരെപ്പോലെ പുറപ്പെടുന്നു. പലരുടെയും ഓർമ്മകളിലൂടെയും എഴുത്തുകളിലൂടെയും കളക്ടറെന്ന അധികാരി കയ്യടക്കിയ ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ഹിംസകളെ കണ്ടെത്തുന്നു. 'ചോരപൊടിയുമ്പോൾ മാത്രമാണ് നാമതിനെ ഹിംസയെന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നത്. മനസ്സിനേല്ക്കുന്ന മുറിവുകൾക്ക് ചോരപ്പാടുണ്ടാവില്ല’- സാംസ്കാരിക രംഗത്തെ വെട്ടിമാറ്റലുകളുടെ ഹിംസയെ രണ്‍ജിത്ത് ഇങ്ങനെയാണ് വിവരിക്കുന്നത്. 

അക്ഷരം പഠിക്കണമെന്നാഗ്രഹിച്ച രാജുവിനെയും അക്ഷരം പഠിച്ചാലും ആദിവാസിയായ തനിക്ക് നിലവിലെ സാമൂഹിക വ്യവസ്ഥയില്‍ നിന്നും സർക്കാരിൽനിന്നും നീതികിട്ടുകയില്ലെന്നു ശഠിച്ച കുട്ടപ്പനെയും തിരക്കിയിറങ്ങുന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരൻ നഗരത്തിന്റെ അടിത്തട്ടിലൂടെയാണ് സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നത്. അടിത്തട്ടിന്റെ ചരിത്രത്തിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിക്കുമ്പോൾ എഴുത്തിൽ തെളിയുന്നത് പ്രബല ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ മറുപുറമാണ്. ആ ചരിത്രത്തിലാണ് രാജുവിന്റെ കൂട്ടുകാരിയായ ജസീ/ന്ത അന്വേഷണത്തിലേക്ക് കടന്നുവരുന്നത്. രാജുവിലേക്കുള്ള വഴി തന്റെ പിതാവിന്റെ പീഡനത്തെ എതിർത്ത് നാടുവിട്ട ജസീന്തയിലൂടെയാണെന്നു തിരിച്ചറിയുമ്പോൾ കോട്ടയം നഗരത്തിനു പുറത്തേക്ക് കഥയുടെ ഭൂപടം മാറുന്നു. ഹൈറേഞ്ചും തമിഴ്നാടും ആഖ്യാനത്തിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിക്കുന്നു. കോട്ടയം, മൂന്നാ‍ര്‍, തമിഴ്നാട് എന്ന ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രം ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചാൽ മലയാള സാഹിത്യത്തിന്റെ പൊതുബോധത്തിന് പുറത്തുനില്ക്കുന്ന ഒരുവലിയ ലോകമാണ് നോവലിന്റെ ഭൂപടമെന്നു കാണാം. ഇവിടെത്തളിയുന്ന അടിത്തട്ടിന്റെ ചരിത്രാത്മകതയാണ് ശ്രദ്ധിക്കേണ്ടത്. അതിരമ്പുഴയിലെ കീഴാള ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളുടെ പോരാട്ടം, മൂന്നാറിലെ കൊളോണിയൽ ഇടപെടലും വേട്ടയുടെ ചരിത്രവും, മൂന്നാര്‍ത തോട്ടങ്ങളിലെ തൊഴിലാളികളുടെ അതിജീവിനത്തിന്റെ പോരാട്ടങ്ങൾ എന്നിങ്ങനെ നോവൽ കേരളത്തിന്റെ സാമൂഹികതയിൽ സവർണരും മറ്റും നടത്തിയിട്ടുള്ള ഹിംസകളുടെ സാമൂഹിക ചരിത്രത്തിലേക്ക് സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നു.  മലയാളനോവലിന്റെ വഴിപിരിയലിന്റെ ഒരുധാരയാണിത്.  'മനുഷ്യജീവിതാഖ്യാനം' എന്നൊക്കെയുള്ള പൊതുബോധ സാഹിത്യനി‍ര്‍വചനങ്ങളെ തിരസ്കരിച്ച് ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ദമിതമായ വചനങ്ങളെ കണ്ടെടുക്കുന്ന സൂക്ഷ്മമായ പ്രക്രിയയാണിത്. പൊതുബോധം തമസ്കരിക്കുന്ന കാഴ്ചകളുടെ, ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ, അബോധത്തെ ഒരു വെളിപാടുപോലെ ഉണ‍ര്‍ത്തിയെടുക്കുന്ന ആഭിചാരമാണ് പുതുനോവലുകളുടെ ശരീരമെന്നു പറയാം. ആ ആഭിചാര ക്രിയ ശരീരത്തില്‍ വഹിക്കുന്ന നോവലാണ് “ആ”.

കഞ്ചാവുവില്പനക്കാരനായ രാജുവിന്റെ കാഴ്ചകളും പറച്ചിലുകളും ലഹരിയിലായിരിക്കുമ്പോഴുള്ള തോന്നലുകളാണെന്ന് നോവലിൽ ഒരിടത്ത് പറയുന്നത് ഇവിടെ പ്രധാനമാണ്. തന്റെ തോന്നലുകളിലൂടെയം വിഭ്രാന്തികളിലൂടെയും രാജു ആഖ്യാനങ്ങളുടെ ചിട്ടയെ തക‍ര്‍ക്കുകയും ആരും കാണാത്ത കാഴ്ചകളിലേക്ക് ഭാഷയെ തുറന്നിടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ലഹരി കിട്ടുമ്പോഴുള്ള തോന്നലുകളായി ചരിത്രം മാറുന്നതോടെ ബോധത്തിന്റെ ക്രമത്തെ ഇല്ലാതാക്കുന്ന അബോധത്തിന്റെ ഭാഷണമായി ചരിത്രം പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നു. രാജു ആണതിന്റെ കേന്ദ്രബിംബം. ഈ തോന്നലുകൾ മുദ്രപ്പെടുത്താനാണ് അയാൾ അക്ഷരംപഠിക്കണമെന്ന് ശാഠ്യംപിടിച്ചത്.

രാജുവിൽ മാത്രമല്ല നോവലിലുടന്നീളം കഞ്ചാവ് കടന്നുവരുന്നുണ്ട്. നോവലിന്റെ തുടക്കിത്തിൽ സുഹൃത്തായ ഡോക്ടറുടെ ഫ്ലാറ്റിൽവച്ച് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ കഞ്ചാവ് ലേഹ്യം കഴിച്ച്  രണ്ടുമുന്നുദിവസം ബോധമില്ലാതെ കിടന്നത് വിവരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പിന്നീട് പലയിടത്തും കഞ്ചാവ് കടന്നുവരുന്നു. നോവലവസാനിക്കുന്നത് രാജു എഴുതിയതായി കരുതുന്ന വേട്ടയുടെ കഥപറയുന്ന നോവലിനുള്ളിലെ നോവലോടെയാണ്. കഞ്ചാവ് കാടിനുള്ളിലെ രഹസ്യസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലാണ് വളരുന്നത്. പുറംലോകത്തിന്റെ കാഴ്ചയെത്താത്ത അതിന്റെ സ്ഥാനം പുറംലോകം അമർത്തിയ ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീകമാണ്. പുറംലോകത്തിന് അത്ര പരിചിതമല്ലാത്ത കാടും അതിലെ വേട്ടയുടെ ചരിത്രവും നിരന്തരം കടന്നുവരുന്ന ആഖ്യാനംതന്നെ രഹസ്യസ്ഥലത്ത് വളരുന്ന ഗൂഢമായി കൈമാറ്റംചെയ്യുന്ന കഞ്ചാവിനെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ആധുനികതയുടെ പോലീസും ഭരണകൂടവും ലഹരിയെ നിയന്ത്രിക്കുന്ന വെട്ടയാടുന്ന ശക്തികളാണ്. ആ ശക്തികളെ തിരസ്കരിക്കുകയാണ് നോവലെന്നു പറയാം. കോട്ടയത്തിന്റെ കളക്ടർ, സാക്ഷരതാ പദ്ധതി തുടങ്ങിയ ഭരണകൂടത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യക്ഷ രൂപത്തോടുള്ള കലഹമാണ് നോവലിന്റെ ആശയലോകമെന്നത് ഈ കഞ്ചാവ് ബിംബം വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു.

‘Lucky’ is a delightful trip through the 20th century’s greatest hits

Jane smiley’s new novel is a quirky fictional autobiography of a moderately successful folk-rock singer-songwriter.

Open Jane Smiley’s new novel, “ Lucky ,” and thank God for the internet, because if you’re like me (well, poor you), you will want to look up and listen to song after song. The quirky fictional autobiography of a moderately successful singer-songwriter in the folk-rock mode of what the narrator, Jodie, calls the “four J’s” — Janis, Joan, Judy and Joni — largely (and minutely) imagines life as itinerary and playlist, with the 20th-century American songbook soundtracking the character’s every painstakingly mapped move.

Jodie is an only child growing up in St. Louis, the product of an affair between her mother, a onetime aspiring musical performer, and a married man-about-town no longer in the picture. Jodie’s grandparents live in the neighborhood, as do an aunt, a cousin — the charming, guitar-playing Brucie — and her Uncle Drew, a financial wizard who places a bet for her at the horse races, netting her a roll of $2 bills that gives her story of luck its start. Again and again throughout the book Jodie will return to that roll of bills, which assumes a talismanic charm as she goes to college to study music, joins a band, writes songs and cuts a record successful enough (with the wise advice of Uncle Drew) to free her of financial concerns for the rest of her songwriting, affair-having, house-buying, traveling, occasionally performing life.

All along, Jodie details her movements so meticulously that you could probably find your way around many St. Louis neighborhoods (and a few in England) with the novel in hand. This level of detail can appear gratuitous, but it comes to seem critical to Jodie’s character, who is always observing, from a slight distance, even what she herself does. Much of what she sees becomes grist for a song, but eventually you understand, as she does, that she is trying to figure out how to be in the world.

In high school she sits “on the john in the girls’ bathroom and listen[s] to the others gossip,” figuring “out a way to stay out of their conversations.” In college, she eavesdrops on her two roommates from Philadelphia talking about sex. Later, she makes an effort: “I watched how people reacted to and greeted one another. I also paid attention to the people who were walking together — how they talked and what their body language was. Then I would walk past a store window and observe myself.” Indeed, in time, she has “learned to show an interest in people and to feel a connection.”

This is life as a lesson in how to live, for which you must write your own instructions as you go along. Sometimes an insight emerges, sometimes a song, sometimes an epiphany, and it’s hard to say why, as when Jodie tells us that observing the behavior of a bird “changed my life,” or that the way a friend “talked about … things made me believe that life goes on.” Luckily, this is Jane Smiley, so the details, the insights, the songs — those she writes, and the dizzying assortment she mentions — are entertaining enough to follow.

In the Last Hundred Years Trilogy , which ran from around 1920 to 2020, Smiley viewed the American century through the filter of one family, whose members managed to experience or witness virtually every major event or trend encompassed by those years. Similarly, “Lucky” distills nearly a century through one character’s life — a life that in its general shape and many particulars seems to track with Smiley’s own. Which makes the late appearance of an even more Smiley-like character — a gawky girl who went to high school with Jodie and ended up publishing a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about a farm and one set in Greenland in the Middle Ages — somewhat trippy, only to be out-tripped by one last narrative twist that it would be unfair to give away.

And after Jane and Jodie and any remaining J’s get to our own dark days, and to “Lucky’s” vision of an even darker future, a twist — please, a full-scale dislocation! — is precisely what we need.

It’s a fitting conclusion to a novel whose narrator tells us that “the great enigma … was the sense you have, that comes and goes, of who you are, what the self is.”

Fictional folk singers have generally been the butt of the joke, holy fools or total idiots: Think of “National Lampoon’s Animal House” when John Belushi’s Bluto brutally smashes the guitar of the young man whose only offense is singing “I gave my love a cherry…,” the sincere saps of “A Mighty Wind” or the Coen brothers’ prickly, unattractive Llewyn Davis. With the glorious late-career renaissance of Joni Mitchell and the eye-opening recent Joan Baez documentary “I Am a Noise,” however, perhaps the time is right for Jodie Rattler, the protagonist of Jane Smiley’s new novel, “Lucky.”

Born in 1949, Rattler grows up in St. Louis with her mother (“the problem was that my father was married to someone else”) and a large extended family where half-hour singalongs follow dinner. Her “luck” begins with a talismanic $86 roll of $2 bills she wins at age 6 at the racetrack with her Uncle Drew. Through a combination of talent and happenstance, she becomes a jobbing singer-songwriter while still at Penn State.

The lives of Jodie’s real-life influences — Joni, Joan, Judy, Janis and their contemporaries — were fraught with incident, from drug abuse and unwanted children to secret marriages and suicide. Rattler’s problem, beyond introversion, is of a different dimension: money (too much). Her debut Elektra single — and songwriters of the Spotify era may want to look away now — earns her three royalty checks totaling roughly $215,000, which, invested by her uncle, is worth a cool half million by 1974.

Jodie, who “didn’t need the success,” becomes her own directionless trust fund kid. There is a 1974 solo album, the admirably named “Fair Isle,” that doesn’t seem to sell, and by the age of 30, she wants “to use my performances to get to places I hadn’t been before, to explore.” Less of a vocation, then, and more an opportunity for sightseeing? The song titles and their accompanying lyrics are well observed (though it’s odd that none of them seem to have choruses) but as often happens in fiction, the band names — the Scats, the Ceiling Fan Fliers and the Garter Belts — aren’t.

Jodie finds and loses love, has, by her count, 23 compensatory affairs and returns home to look after her aging family, but doesn’t have enough drive to sustain a career. Her life in music is an impossible fantasia that requires no manager or agent, functions without interviews and radio appearances, and — least likely of all — features band rehearsals that start at 8 in the morning.

“Lucky” also presents surprising misinformation about, among other things, the British 20-pence piece (minted here a decade too early), toad-in-the-hole (which isn’t “neatly housed in a puffy pastry,” or any pastry) and the availability of birth control to unmarried women in the U.K. after the 1967 Family Planning Act; she only had to ask a doctor.

There is an undercurrent of anxiety in the book that I thought presaged a twist (the trauma that underpins Jodie’s lack of vim, for example) but this shoe hovers without dropping. Our narrator has proved herself a rather linear and fussy thinker — somewhat disappointingly, given her freewheeling spirit and laissez-faire attitude to her career — yet just when the reader is hoping for a satisfying fade, the epilogue takes a wild left swerve. It’s as if Smiley has awakened from a trance and sought to distance herself from everything that’s gone before with a little bad-faith bargain-basement postmodernism (though this does have the fringe benefit of providing some cover for the musical bum notes).

Earlier, Jodie admits that even audience applause is not much of a pleasure “because when you finish your set, you are thinking about the mistakes you made and what you might have done better,” adding, “Maybe this is true for all musicians.” I don’t think it is. But perhaps a novelist might think so.

Emily Henry does it again. Romantic 'Funny Story' satisfies without tripping over tropes

The weather is getting warmer, so obviously it's time for another banger read from Emily Henry.

For a subset of millennial women, the author has become a summer staple . Freewheeling romances that defy the stereotypes of "beach reads" (starting with her 2020 debut cheekily titled, "Beach Read"), Henry has become a reliable source of yearly can't-put-them-down stories about love, friendships and getting older.

Her latest, " Funny Story " (available now from Berkley Hardcover, pp. 410) takes the traditional "opposites attract" narrative and gives a realistic, if somewhat tragic twist. Children’s librarian Daphne Vincent (Henry’s characters always love to read) has moved to a idyllic Lake Michigan beach town with her fiancé Peter, slotting herself into his preferred life and the house he bought.

But when Peter leaves her for his childhood best friend just weeks before their wedding, Daphne doesn’t have a place to live. She winds up bunking with Miles, the ex-boyfriend of Peter’s new love. He's a punky, fun-loving charmer who everybody loves, and she's bookish and reserved. They don’t have anything in common except their shared heartbreak, but isn’t that just the perfect setting for new romance? 

It certainly checks a lot of rom-com set up boxes, but Henry wisely keeps Daphne’s journey far from perfect. There is real grief and trauma here, plus a loss of self and identity. Before Daphne can even think about falling in love with Miles, she has to start loving and knowing herself again. Maybe that’s not the stuff of traditional beach fluff, but for so many women who have been lost in romance in an unhealthy way, it’s deeply cathartic. And once the time for romance is right, Henry doesn't disappoint. It's sweet, passionate, and just hot enough to steam up the book, if not set it on fire.

Just like in her other novels, the author's characters are deep, realistic and relatable. Daphne is quiet and guarded, having grown up with an absentee father she has no faith in anyone to live up to her expectations. Gregarious Miles has more issues than meet the eye, and unfolding his inner life takes the reader on an unexpected journey as he and Daphne become friends, and something more.

Henry is so particularly talented at creating romance that eschews tropes and clichés but still satisfies our innate desire for predictability and happy endings in this genre. It's certainly not easy to balance the comfortingly formulaic with the tantalizingly unique. " Story " might hit the mark best of all of Henry's books so far.

It's a funny story, how she does it, actually. You should take a read.
